02:18we try to say, look, if we get these three things done,

02:24And so I'm not saying to pump the brakes or, well,

02:30And until we continue to win and continue to go out there
02:33and play football the way that we know how to play football,

02:39I mean, you talked a lot in training camp
02:41about specifically being able to run the ball
02:44and control the line of scrimmage.

02:49And I tell the players, I don't care
02:53if you feel like I'm giving out game plan secrets or anything

03:05And I tell the players, too, if you want to go out there
03:07and talk noise and say how great you are, I'm good with that.
03:11But you better be ready to go out there and prove
03:13it each and every weekend.
03:14I think the guy's buying it.
03:16And we had Boomer Siason was just on with us.
03:19Love Boomer.
03:20And Boomer was talking about Ramondre Stevenson
03:24running the ball 25 times.
03:26Can he do that all season long if that's
03:29what this team is going to be?
03:31One thing I'll say about Ramondre,
03:32and I've told him this, so when you guys talk to him,
03:35you should ask him.
03:35But I think he's one of the best backs in the league.
03:38I just don't think he gets the appreciation.
03:41I don't think he gets the hype as some of these other backs.
03:43He's one of these guys that always
03:44falls forward for four or five yards.
03:47And at the end of the game there,
03:50he was a little bit tired.
03:51And he wanted to stay in the game.
03:53And I was just like, yo, this is the start of something
03:57special going forward.
03:59Even though you're in your own bubble though,
04:00there was a narrative about this team heading into the season,
04:03whether it was local media, national media, fans.
04:06So how do you make sure that your team doesn't
04:09read into that and get in over their head?
04:12Because I think that this was a statement win
04:14for a lot of the guys to kind of shut people up.
04:17And correct me if I'm wrong, but whether it
04:19was the offensive line, the offense,
04:21or what is the defense going to look like without Matt Jude on,
04:25it seemed like this was starting things off on the right foot
04:28to tell people to relax a bit.
04:31That's a great question.
04:32I would say they definitely hear everything that you guys say.
04:35And so as the head coach, I always
04:37try to tell them don't pay attention to it.
04:40But whether it's social media, or the radio, or newspaper,
04:45they definitely hear it.
04:48But we all have a chip on our shoulder.
04:49We all have it.
04:50I mean, you don't have to know what it is,
04:51but we all have a chip on our shoulder
04:53from whether it's childhood or adulthood.
04:56And those guys just went out and played hard.
04:59They went out.
05:00And so now the challenge or the opportunity for me
05:04is to instill a sense of urgency with these guys
05:08and if we got to learn how to win, we got to learn how to win.
05:14And we won one game.
05:15And that's what it is.
05:17It's one game.
05:19And I think that's a huge part of it.
05:20Gerard, you said at the beginning of this
05:22how proud you were, you were happy about the players.
05:25But it was totally apparent to everybody watching
05:29how happy they were for you.
05:32It's not every day you see a Gatorade bat.

05:35I was still a couple of minutes left.
05:39I had a lot of faith and reminder.
05:41Left me sticky.
05:43No, but I mean, that had to be satisfying
05:47and a real memorable moment for you as a head coach.

06:01It didn't hit me at the beginning of the game, middle.
06:03It didn't hit me five minutes in the fourth quarter.
06:07It hit me when those guys continued to run the ball
06:09and run out the clock.
06:10And that's when I was like, all right,
06:12we're going to build something.
06:13We've got to build off of this.
06:15Offensive line only allowed one sack.
06:18I've told you guys the entire time, and I've told the media,
06:21we've overblown the deficiencies that we
06:26have at offensive line.
06:27Every single preseason game, turn on the tape.
06:30This is what I always say, turn on the tape.
06:32Every single preseason game, I would
06:34say we dominated the line of scrimmage
06:35defensively and defensively.
06:37Now, there were some things.
06:38There was the one practice versus Philly,
06:40where everyone kind of blew that out of proportion.
06:42But I have nothing but total faith in Scott Peters, AVP,
06:45Kugler, Mike, all those guys to get those guys ready to go.

06:53Now, is there any chance with the offensive line playing
06:55as well as they played, that we'll
06:57start to see maybe some Drake May packages?

07:35not making mistakes.
07:36We won the turnover battle.
07:38We won the hit and yardage battle.
07:39And that's what I'm talking about.
07:42Jacoby was behind Romandre second when it comes to that.
07:46Does that worry you, that it's those two,
07:48that it's your quarterback and one guy that's
07:50getting all those yards for the team?
07:52Not at all.
07:53For me, Romandre is one of those guys
07:55that you can give him the ball 20, 25 times a game,
08:00and he'll get you four and a half, five yards of carry.
08:03And the guys behind him, Gibby and Haseke, those guys,
08:09they also have a skill set that's
08:11pretty good for our offense.
08:13What about the operations, Gerard?
08:14So even teams that are talented, that have coaches that
08:17have been there for a while, when they change both
08:19coordinators, it's a learning curve.
08:21Well, yesterday, your first game as a head coach
08:24in the regular season.
08:25Demarcus Covington's first game as a defensive coordinator.
08:28Alex Van Pelt, first time working with you guys
08:30as the offensive play caller.
08:31How'd you think the operation went?
08:32I thought it went well.
08:33And we ironed out all the problems during the preseason.
08:37After every single game, I would ask for feedback,
08:39like how can we do this better?
08:41Wiggy has some ideas.
08:43No, no, no, I'm sure.
08:44Look, like I said, it's one game.
08:47And I've always said that the team you see today
08:51won't be the team you see tomorrow.
08:52And so that's our mentality.
08:54And we have a North Star, we have a Red Star
08:57all over the building where that is winning.
09:00But at the same time, it's getting better
09:02each and every weekend.
09:03And that's what I expect from the guys.

09:46Well, here's where I'll say I thought you guys did a really
09:50good job defensively, especially that front.
09:53When you look at what Keon White was able to do,
09:55you always talk about anybody who's played the game
09:58knows the game starts in the trenches.
10:00When you look at what your defensive front was
10:02able to do pretty much all game long to Joe Burrow,
10:06an elite quarterback, and just making him feel and look
10:09uncomfortable back there, what was some of the stuff
10:12that you saw from your D-line?
10:13I saw those guys just hustling.
10:15And a lot of those sacks, once again,
10:18the pass rush has to marry up with the back end.
10:21And so I thought Keon had a great game.
10:24I thought, let's rewind and go to the run game.
10:28DG and Farms, all those guys did a great job in the run game
10:33to get them into passing situations.
10:35And I would say they went out there and played well.
10:37They hustled.
10:37And this is why I always preach, let's run to the ball.
10:41Because you know when you run to the ball, things happen.
10:44Things happen in this game.
10:45And I thought they did a good job.
10:48And we've had great defenses here in this organization
10:56where you haven't had that premier rusher.
11:00And we were able to still get pressure
11:02through stunts and different games that we run up front.
11:05And those guys did a good job yesterday.
11:08In saying that, when you watch the film,
11:10there's still so much room to improve.
11:13There's so much room to improve.
11:15And one thing I will say about the game,
11:17I was so proud of the guys.
11:19I always talk about pulling the nose up.
11:21And so when the plane's going down,
11:22be ready to pull the nose up.
11:24In the third quarter, it got a little shaky there.
11:26And I'm sure you guys, all you guys here sitting around me
11:28probably were like, oh, no, oh, no.
11:31But they were able to pull the nose up, and it was good.
11:34It was good for the team.
11:35Cardona getting that fumble.

11:38To have a vet like that on your team, though, I mean,
11:41how happy were you that he was able to?
11:42A vet military-wise or football-wise?
11:44Well, both.

11:49You know, look, Joe's a good athlete.
11:51He was voted a captain by his peers.
11:54And we told him, just go to the ball, go to the ball.
11:57And to cause a turnover like that, I was just pumped for him.
12:02Looking ahead, and this week, what
12:05are the things that you're going to go in and say
12:07we got to work on?
12:08First, I do think it's important that the guys know,
12:12when we hit our targets, we have a very good chance
12:15to win the game.
12:16And so before we change the page,
12:17that's what I want to talk about.
12:19And then after that, there were so many plays out there
12:23that we just kind of left out there.
12:26And I want to show them that.
12:28Even though we walk away with a win,
12:30there are so many opportunities for us
12:31to be a better football team.
12:33And that's my message to the team.
12:36We saw that Robert Kraft gave you the game ball after.
12:39Must have been a nice moment for you.
12:41Did you happen to hear from your predecessor?

12:46I'm not going to get into that.
12:47But what I will say is this.
12:49It was very special for me to get the game
12:53ball from Mr. Kraft.
12:55And I was so thankful just for the opportunity,
12:59not only for me, but also for Elliott.
13:01And so I actually gave a ball to Elliott
13:06because we work in tandem.
13:07But what I will say is, it was just such a special moment.
13:12It was 20 plus years that it's been a different coach
13:15in there.
13:16And it was good.
13:20So some of those targets.

13:23We know that guys can cry now.

13:28Some of those targets, would that
13:29be holding your opponent to 100 yards rushing,
13:32your third down, proficiency on defense,
13:36was you kept them on those 45%?
13:38We'll always have a good run defense.
13:44I truly believe that.
13:45And when I talk to you guys, I'm talking to the players.
13:48They listen to this stuff.
13:50Earlier, what I said was, Instagram, whatever it is,
13:54they listen to it.
13:55So here you go, guys.
13:56We'll always be a good run defense, no matter what.
13:59And our job defensively is to make the other team
14:04one dimensional.
14:05And that's what happened yesterday.

14:36I don't know if it's a buck 25 that you're
14:37going to do rushing the ball on offense.
14:39But I said, I said, I think it was Wednesday.
14:43I said, we're going to run the ball.
14:44It's not a secret.
14:45Once again, you know, I think sometimes it gets overblown.
14:49Oh, these, you know, they know the scheme.
14:51They know what you're trying.

15:17gets so tied up into the X's and O's.

15:26It's about playing with better fundamentals than that guy.
15:29It's about moving bodies, as you know, right?
15:32You move bodies back and forth.

15:55on that completely, but are there revisions?

16:04and week five that would change it?

16:45So you want to honor that?

16:58The guys are behind him.
16:59Like, we're moving forward, and we're getting ready for Seattle.

17:13and I also had a conversation with the team.

17:18I believe coaches should be transparent,
17:21because we've all had coaches that weren't.
17:23I believe that.
17:24And it kind of makes you upset.
17:26And so for me, I'm always going to be honest,
17:28and I tell the coaching staff, our job
17:30is to put a mirror in front of the guys
17:32and show them what it really is so they can become
17:35the player that they want to be.
17:37And you know your family, oh, you did a great job.
17:41Like, Mom, no, I didn't.
17:44Everyone around you is always going
17:45to talk about how good you did.
17:48And when you come in this building,
17:51we have to be very honest with each other,
17:52have honest conversations.
17:53Do you find that being the thing?
17:55Because that is the biggest thing for athletes,
17:57especially football players in the NFL,
18:00is a coach that can be 100% transparent and just say,
18:04hey, give it to me straight.
18:05I'm a man.
18:06I'll take it whatever way it is.
18:08Do you feel like that's part of, because we
18:10hear the players talk about the vibe is different.
18:12Do you feel like that's a big message for you
18:15is giving it to these guys, because you're
18:17a former player, the way, with no sugarcoating it,
18:21so they can feel like he's keeping it real?

18:23And this is a relationship business.
18:29And if I can't tell you the truth and what it really is,
18:32then we're going to have a problem.
18:33Like, we're always going to ask something.
