00:00:00Can you say hard hats, folks?
00:00:07Hard hats, munch pails, steel tool, boots.
00:00:09Anything short of a championship this year is a failure.
00:00:11Look at this boomer right here.
00:00:13You've just got so much talent here.
00:00:16Somebody said we need to apologize for Jalen.
00:00:18Can I close it, John?
00:00:19What are we apologizing for?
00:00:20What did we say?
00:00:21What did we do?
00:00:31Hey, Bobby Manning here.
00:00:34Welcome to the Garden Report, game number three of the season
00:00:38in the books, as well as this mini road trip to start the
00:00:41year. For the Celtics who remain undefeated here against the
00:00:45Pistons, 124-118, not without a scare, not without a needed
00:00:49comeback late down six after the Celtics squandered a 23-point
00:00:55lead in this game. Per usual, Sherrod, your Pistons, given the
00:00:59Celtics a tough run here.
00:01:00Scrappy.
00:01:01Yeah, JB Bickerstaff's squad scrapping away and staying in this
00:01:06game the whole way. Tough second half offensive performance
00:01:10for the Celtics here.
00:01:11I knew, Sherrod, that they were going to come down to earth
00:01:13a little bit.
00:01:13That's usually what happens when you shoot out of this world
00:01:16in a first half and build a massive lead early.
00:01:19It's tough to maintain in today's NBA, and I actually thought
00:01:22the Pistons did a pretty good job, you know, keeping up with
00:01:24the threes, working the offensive glass, doing all those little
00:01:28things to stay in this game, but some great sets late by
00:01:31Boston. Got a couple of Drew Holliday threes after he started
00:01:35this game pretty quiet.
00:01:36He had like two shots about 20 minutes into his night, and
00:01:40he ends up playing that whole finishing stretch and tying
00:01:43the game before Jason Tatum poured in a tough mid-range shot
00:01:48to give the Celtics a lead there before they played the foul
00:01:50game, and Jalen gave them some big wins at the line there.
00:01:54So a test that you wanted to see.
00:01:56We were waiting to see when the Celtics would finally play
00:01:59in a crunch time or at least close game.
00:02:02They got that tonight, and despite some nitpicking that we'll
00:02:07do here, I do like how they reacted to not playing their best
00:02:10in the third quarter, being downhauser, which I thought hurt
00:02:14them more here tonight, and then getting into a close game
00:02:17where they had to execute late.
00:02:18But what was your biggest takeaway from this one?
00:02:20Well, to me, the biggest takeaway is their ability to take
00:02:24a punch to the face, fall down, and get back up.
00:02:27You know, they've been frontrunners the first couple of games
00:02:29and from the standpoint of they built this big lead, they
00:02:32maintained the big lead, and they won big.
00:02:34And so what could they do when that lead disappears and
00:02:37they get into a dogfight?
00:02:39What are they going to be able to finish?
00:02:42And they were able to do that, and they got a lot of big
00:02:45contributions.
00:02:46You know, Drew Holiday had not made a shot all game long,
00:02:49and the next thing you know, back-to-back threes to tie
00:02:51the game up.
00:02:52You look at Drew Holiday's, you know, profile, and that's
00:02:56kind of consistent with what he did in the playoffs last
00:02:58year. Didn't have the biggest numbers, but the shots that
00:03:00he made were big.
00:03:02Jalen Brown, again, you know, the way he finished the game,
00:03:06scoring the ball was great.
00:03:07But look at what he did defensively in the round of three,
00:03:10four, five-minute mark.
00:03:11They had that sequence of four consecutive really strong
00:03:16plays defensively, and he was involved in all of them,
00:03:18whether it was a steal, deflection, forcing a Detroit
00:03:22shooter to lose the ball and take a hurried, you know,
00:03:2430-footer as the shot clock was running down.
00:03:27He did a lot of really good things, I thought, at the defensive
00:03:29end of the floor when the game mattered most.
00:03:32And you know, you certainly, you'd be remiss if you didn't
00:03:34talk about Tatum and what he was able to do. Again, knocking
00:03:38down big shots, making big plays.
00:03:41You know, certainly it's ridiculously early to start talking
00:03:45about league MVP, but you can't have that conversation
00:03:48this early and not have Jason Tatum in your top two or three.
00:03:51I'd say him and Anthony Davis right now are probably playing
00:03:53the best basketball of any two players in the league right
00:03:56now. So a good win for the Celtics from the standpoint
00:04:00of it gave them the kind of test that they needed early
00:04:03in the season. Not great in terms of just their overall
00:04:07play, but in an 82-game season, Bobby, we've seen enough
00:04:11of this to know that you're not going to play great every
00:04:13night, but can you win on those nights when you're not
00:04:16maybe at the top of your game? And the Celtics certainly
00:04:18proved that against a scrappy Detroit Pistons game.
00:04:23Want to get some sponsors in here before we dive deeper
00:04:26into the game. Sherrod, we're getting a little popping

00:05:50coming up Celtics Bucks on Monday big game at the
00:05:54garden probably a little easier. It's going to be a
00:05:56tough ticket all year but a little easier than opening

00:06:01game against Milwaukee next up for Boston. So go
00:06:04over there check out all the seats all the deals
00:06:07sometimes the best deal is right up until and a

00:06:34what you're going to pay right away over on the game
00:06:37time app. So check it out. It's a great experience
00:06:40and again use the code CLNS for $20 off your first
00:06:43purchase terms apply. So let's get back into the
00:06:46game charade if we're going to nitpick some
00:06:50performances here. I do think Jalen fell into a bit
00:06:53of an ISO game in the second half ball didn't keep
00:06:56moving out of his hands at a super high rate credit
00:06:59to him for working himself out of it. The offensive
00:07:02glass he gets three offensive rebounds in this one
00:07:04and still ends up scoring 24 points. Thanks to the
00:07:0810 free throw attempts he generated in this game
00:07:11shot decently from three as well. So he works his
00:07:13way out of game our tough third quarter. I would
00:07:17say I almost had that offensive foul or costly
00:07:20offensive foul in the fourth quarter there. So
00:07:23you know Brian can fall into that a little bit
00:07:25sometimes we saw it from him early last year before
00:07:28I feel like he really found his role in this offense,
00:07:32but this was a tough one for him here tonight
00:07:33shooting was on a line in this one like six for
00:07:3824. Yeah.
00:07:43Yeah, not great. Definitely not the Jalen Brown
00:07:47kind of game that he certainly is looking for in
00:07:49the Celtics need from him, but give him credit
00:07:52though when it came time to make the big plays to
00:07:55find a way to put this team over the hump and
00:07:58get the victory Jalen came up big and that's what
00:08:01the really good players do. You know, they may
00:08:03not play great basketball for 48 minutes, but
00:08:06when it when his crunch time they make the plays
00:08:08that have to be made and I thought he did a good
00:08:10job with that. But again, you're right Bobby it
00:08:13felt as though he went back into the Jalen the
00:08:16pre all NBA pre all-star Jalen where it's just
00:08:20dribble dribble dribble. I so dribble dribble
00:08:22dribble. I so dribble attack and that's not
00:08:25really what his game is at right now in order to
00:08:28be effective. He needs to be a bit more of a ball
00:08:31mover and recognize opportunities when he should
00:08:34attack and I just didn't think he had a good game
00:08:36in that regard, but I thought defensively, like
00:08:38I said, he made the plays down a stretch and made
00:08:40the free throws. He needed to make did a lot of
00:08:42the things in crunch time that they absolutely
00:08:44needed to get this win. And so again, there's
00:08:48definitely the cool thing for Joe Missoula is
00:08:50these are the kind of games that it serves every
00:08:53purpose you want you want to win obviously, but
00:08:56you want to leave room for growth and be able to
00:08:59have some teachable moments going forward and
00:09:01certainly there's a lot of food on the bone for
00:09:03Joe to talk about, you know between now and that
00:09:05Bucks game. Yeah, and I'm interested to see what
00:09:08Joe said after this one. I know he had some
00:09:11comments on the shot selection out of the Wizards
00:09:13game, especially early on. We ended up falling
00:09:16up behind by eight in that game before working
00:09:18their way back into some of their flow offensively.
00:09:21I'll give them credit. You give Jalen credit for
00:09:23working out of it, but the team as a whole they
00:09:25had a shot deficit for a lot of this one Pistons
00:09:28tough on the offensive glass. I knew Jalen Dern
00:09:31was going to give them some trouble in this one.
00:09:32He ends up shooting seven for seven with 15 points
00:09:35nine rebounds and just a force on the offensive
00:09:38glass there. Jade and Ivy's able to get his own
00:09:40shot off Kate Cunningham. Same thing. He ends up
00:09:43with 21 and 10 in this one. So it's a better
00:09:45Detroit team. They didn't shoot amazing in this
00:09:48game, but better than they've been capable of
00:09:51in past seasons. You got Tim Hardaway now who
00:09:53hit a three in this one. You got Malik Beasley
00:09:56who went five for eight. He was a pretty good
00:09:57pickup and Fontechio almost stole the game from
00:10:00them late with a couple of threes there. So the
00:10:02Pistons kept up with the three-point shooting.
00:10:05They got to the free throw line 22 times. So they
00:10:07kept that margin close, but the Celtics just kept
00:10:10working back from these droughts from their, you
00:10:14know, tougher stretches in the second half and
00:10:16they ended up winning the shot totals in this game
00:10:18which Joe always talks about. They ended up getting
00:10:20up 48 threes. So that gives them a 22-14 edge
00:10:24there and you know, the shooting just continues
00:10:26for Tatum, Brown solid night, Drew hit his two
00:10:30and Pritchard out of this world in the first half.
00:10:33He almost made good on Jalen's promise, Sherrod.
00:10:36I know, I know and I tell you what, I mean,
00:10:39they're going to need that particularly as you
00:10:41pointed out earlier with no Sam Hauser. They're
00:10:43going to need someone to generate some some
00:10:45points off that bench and Peyton was that guy,
00:10:48you know, look, he was five for eight. The rest
00:10:50of the bench. I think was like what one for three
00:10:53or one for four something like that. Not a lot
00:10:55of a lot of bench production tonight and other
00:10:57than Peyton Pritchard and these are the kind of
00:11:00games where you need guys like Peyton Pritchard
00:11:02to really play well because with Jalen not being
00:11:05himself with Tatum was just on a ridiculously
00:11:08hot streak. But you know, remember Tatum had
00:11:10some foul issues there early on and so they
00:11:14needed someone to give them something that's
00:11:16not from among their starting five and at some
00:11:20point we'll absolutely get to Al because this
00:11:23was like vintage throwback Al in terms of
00:11:26shot making but on nights like this where you're
00:11:29you know, one of your core guys just doesn't
00:11:30have that same type of pop that same punch.
00:11:33They're used to you need some guys are going
00:11:35to steady the ship and knock down some shots on
00:11:37the interim bases and I thought they got that
00:11:39from Peyton Pritchard and certainly Al Horford
00:11:41as well. Yeah, almost forgot about Al's
00:11:44performance. Another guy who stacked him a lot
00:11:47of his points in the first half there and it
00:11:49looked like this was going to be another runaway
00:11:50charade when they were hitting all those shots.
00:11:53They got to a point where I think through their
00:11:54first a hundred twenty two shot threes this
00:11:57season shooting forty five percent. So it's just
00:12:00been ridiculous three points here and they end
00:12:01this game forty five percent to even as they
00:12:04cool down in the second half there. So for Tatum
00:12:07in particular and we can hit on him since you
00:12:10know, I think it's pretty obvious that he's
00:12:11squarely in that MVP race here. We talked about
00:12:14it the other night charade when you weren't here
00:12:15but in Washington someone asked him about it
00:12:19and I feel like the last I don't know four or
00:12:21five times he's gotten this question going back
00:12:23to last year. He's gone. Oh, I'm just trying to
00:12:27win and I'm not worried about MVP if that comes
00:12:30out of our winning great, but it's not something
00:12:32I'm thinking about and in just a slight shift,
00:12:36you know toward embracing the race a little bit
00:12:39again. He said it's always been on my list. I've
00:12:44accomplished a lot of the things that I want to
00:12:46accomplish in my career, you know, all my idols
00:12:48won these different awards that I've been pursuing
00:12:50here and you know, when he looks back at the
00:12:52MVPs, he said all of them have been on championship
00:12:55contenders. So he doesn't feel like you're
00:12:57sacrificing winning to go after MVP and without
00:13:02just fully embracing the race and saying I'm all
00:13:06in on chasing MVP here. He said that you can win
00:13:10and go after MVP and I want to see him do that.
00:13:13I think we've been looking for him to be in that
00:13:15as you call it charade top five Tatum mode for
00:13:18a longer stretch to start a season the last two
00:13:20years. He was the leader in this race this time
00:13:22a year and then some shooting inconsistency sets
00:13:25in or some of the competitors shoot ahead of him
00:13:27in stats or something just happens to back and
00:13:30knock Tatum further back in the race this this
00:13:34time around. It's not like he's in the clear lead,
00:13:37you know, Davis is off to a great start as you
00:13:39mentioned some other guys are starting to put up
00:13:42monster numbers to begin this. I feel like there's
00:13:44like five or six guys averaging 30 to begin this
00:13:46year. But if this was a three-game season, I like
00:13:51Tatum's chances with the stats and the production
00:13:53he's put up. Well, you've got the stats the
00:13:55production and then you've got the supporting
00:13:58cast that he has. I mean, I think sometimes we
00:14:00lose sight of the fact that Jason Tatum plays
00:14:03with some really good players and sometimes that
00:14:06is seen as a negative when you're talking about
00:14:08MVP chase. But when you look at the numbers that
00:14:10Tatum is posting you look at the talent that's
00:14:13around him is it's impressive. It's even more
00:14:16impressive that he's playing as well as he has
00:14:19and putting up the numbers when you look at the
00:14:21type of players that he has around him. I mean,
00:14:23Derrick White is a guy that you know, you look
00:14:25at what Derrick has done this year. Derrick has
00:14:27basically become a damn near 20 point per game
00:14:29score. Jalen Brown, another 20 point per game
00:14:31score. You look at the impact your holiday makes,
00:14:33you look at Al Horford, you start looking at
00:14:35Pritchard off the bench and next thing you know,
00:14:38it's pretty surprising that you can have a guy
00:14:40getting you between 25 and 30 points and winning
00:14:43and doing it without it being a disruption
00:14:46of the offensive flow. Will that hurt him this
00:14:48year again? Because I feel like that hurt him
00:14:50last year how good his team is and the fact that
00:14:52he has Brown next to him. I don't think it's
00:14:53going to hurt him this year because he's already
00:14:56won a championship and he's put up big numbers.
00:14:58I think there's a time when players like Tatum
00:15:02are actually rewarded for being a team
00:15:06guy who wins at a high level and it's not going
00:15:09to happen every year. It's certainly not because
00:15:11the Celtics, the way they're built, they're going
00:15:13to be a title contender for the next two, three,
00:15:14four years unless they start making some massive
00:15:17radical roster changes and Tatum is going to be
00:15:19the head of that snake every year. So I think
00:15:22there will come a point where Tatum will be
00:15:24rewarded for being the best player on the best
00:15:28team with the best stats. And I think that year
00:15:30is now because as they pursue this second, you
00:15:33know, straight championship, you start looking
00:15:35around at the other rosters in the NBA and the
00:15:37Celtics. It's not, you know, it's not homerism
00:15:40to say that they've got the best team in the
00:15:42NBA. They won a championship. They brought
00:15:44everyone back from that team and through the
00:15:46first three games, they're undefeated and the
00:15:49one game that they were on the road where they
00:15:51were kind of on the ropes a little bit, they made
00:15:53all the big plays when it mattered most down
00:15:55the stretch to get the road win. So Tatum has
00:15:57positioned himself to be in that conversation
00:16:00certainly after week one and I think we're going
00:16:02to be having this conversation throughout the
00:16:04season. I think Tatum is going to be a relatively
00:16:07top five MVP candidate all year long and I do
00:16:10if the Celtics continue to win at the level that
00:16:13I think they're capable of. I think it's going
00:16:15to be hard to look past Tatum as this year's
00:16:19league MVP. Yeah, and I had a couple of notes
00:16:22jotted down on this because there's obviously
00:16:24a ton of criteria here that he's going to have
00:16:26to meet and it's the stats which he has the
00:16:29shooting consistency, which he's regained to
00:16:31start this year and then you get into some of
00:16:34the separators because it'll be a tight class.
00:16:37You're going to have your Lucas and all the rest
00:16:38up there. He finally has the narrative. I thought
00:16:41John made a good point with this the other night
00:16:44coming off the Olympics coming off a summer of
00:16:47snubs the, you know, no finals MVP all that stuff
00:16:51you look back and what's everybody saying in the
00:16:53media charade. He's motivated. There's going to
00:16:55be some extra going into this year and that's
00:16:58had people talking about Tatum going into this
00:17:00year and then he follows it up with this production
00:17:02and so everybody's going to be saying, oh, you
00:17:04know, he came out firing after the Olympic snub
00:17:07made these improvements and just, you know, tore
00:17:09the league apart this year and then I think that
00:17:12lead say what you just mentioned there him getting
00:17:14credit for their winning, you know, they're going
00:17:16to be if they're playing like this and pulling out
00:17:19games like this where even when they play poorly,
00:17:22they're going to have that massive lead in the
00:17:23East again. They're going to potentially be the
00:17:26best team in the league again. So that thing last
00:17:29year where he might have gotten knocked because
00:17:31he's on the best team. There's a ton of guys around
00:17:34him. He's not the MVP in that case. I think that
00:17:36flips to he's the reason or one of the major reasons
00:17:41that they're the best team in the league and he
00:17:42ends up getting credit for that this time around
00:17:44this stuff usually happens a year late, right?
00:17:46Shroud where it does you look at last year and
00:17:49say, ooh, like we probably should have given him
00:17:51more credit for how good the Celtics were. They
00:17:54won the championship and now you give them credit
00:17:56a year later for repeating that. Yeah, and let's
00:17:59be clear just because you know, guys are clearly
00:18:02snubbed or have a reason to feel they were snubbed
00:18:04doesn't mean they're going to come back, you know,
00:18:06guns ablaze in the following season and put up
00:18:08big numbers. I mean, look at Therese Halliburton
00:18:10in Indiana. I mean, he had a game the other night
00:18:12and yet a goose egg where he didn't score a single
00:18:14damn point. I can't and not even trying to clown
00:18:18him, but I can't recall the last time an all-star
00:18:21player without being hurt. Actually was held
00:18:25scoreless make now guys have gone games without
00:18:27making field goals, but they usually find a way
00:18:29to get to the free throw line at the free throw.
00:18:31Yeah and score in some capacity, but literally a
00:18:33big fat goose egg and to me, it's an example
00:18:36what happens when you use events of the past to
00:18:39lock in your focus for the future and when you
00:18:42use events of the past to just talk about events
00:18:44of the past. I mean, it's it's in shocking that
00:18:48guy that supposedly that good is held to a zero
00:18:53and the Knicks are a good team defense. We know
00:18:55that but they're not that damn good. I mean,
00:18:57there's there's some you have to inflict some
00:18:59stuff. There has to be have to be some self-inflicted
00:19:02wounds in order to put up a goose egg. I mean
00:19:05think about Jason Tatum. Can you imagine a scenario
00:19:07where Jason Tatum plays a full game does not get
00:19:09hurt and doesn't score a single point. Hell no.
00:19:13No, I can't. I can't think of another player, you
00:19:16know, that has been an also the last couple of
00:19:18years who would be held to something like that.
00:19:22I mean he was usually and I give Jason Tatum a
00:19:25lot of credit because he could have easily come
00:19:27back this year and been the same player. He was
00:19:29last year and put up decent numbers, but he
00:19:33locked in on things. He had to get better at and
00:19:36the you know, the Olympics, you know, they are
00:19:37what they were. He's a better. He's focused his
00:19:41mechanics and to be a better shooter is defense.
00:19:45I think it's better. I mean one of the lost
00:19:47components of this game that they just beat
00:19:48Detroit was, you know, he comes in there. The game
00:19:52is tight and one of the first big plays he makes
00:19:54was he has a bait a block shot along the baseline
00:19:58that was one of the keys to, you know, that stretch
00:20:00where the Celtics were able to get back in the
00:20:03game after they fell down by six. So he's becoming
00:20:06a much more high-impact all-around player. You
00:20:10look at a guy like Luka, for example, who you
00:20:12mentioned earlier. Luka is a great score. You take
00:20:14away that he's not really giving you a whole lot
00:20:17good playmaker does a good job of getting, you
00:20:19know, just seeing the floor and all that but he's
00:20:22not giving you much of anything defensive. We
00:20:24had one good game against I thought the Celtics
00:20:28in the playoffs and that was pretty much it but
00:20:30that came after several months and years of being
00:20:34called out for being a bad defender. So Tatum, I
00:20:38think is doing all those things to become someone
00:20:41who when you talk about League MVP, it's not just
00:20:45kind of this passing comment. It's it becomes
00:20:47almost like a muscle memory thing where he's so
00:20:49good all around that him in that conversation. It
00:20:53just feels natural. It feels like well, yeah, he's
00:20:56best player in the best team putting up the best
00:20:57numbers. Why would you not be a top three top four
00:21:00League MVP candidate? Yeah, and it feels like he's
00:21:04going to be in that mix this year tough to tell
00:21:06if he'll win it some say he's going to have to
00:21:08catch some breaks, but he already is with Embiid
00:21:10being out of the mix to start this year the Bucks.
00:21:14I'm interested to see how that how that works.
00:21:16Yeah against them and you know, Giannis is always
00:21:19going to be in that conversation. But for Jokic
00:21:21another guy who's always in this conversation
00:21:24another tough loss today and you know, I started
00:21:27hitting the panic button on them a little bit
00:21:28in the preseason and there's some real concerns
00:21:32there. I think I'm interested to see how that
00:21:33continues and that would obviously be if they
00:21:35fade from the race a major break for Tatum in
00:21:38this race because that's probably the toughest
00:21:40guy to beat out of all the competitors here is
00:21:42Jokic and he still might be able to do what he
00:21:44does. But when you're the six seed seven seed,
00:21:48even if it's not your fault, it's going to be
00:21:50tougher to garner those votes at the end of the
00:21:52year. So well that Bobby in the fact that he's
00:21:54won the award multiple times. I think that's
00:21:56going to work against him voters have a tendency
00:21:59to unless you are putting up unprecedented
00:22:02numbers or your team is having an unprecedented
00:22:04season in terms of wins and losses that at some
00:22:07point there is a pushback on giving you or that
00:22:12type of honor if you want it multiple times and
00:22:17so I with Jokic. I just don't think he's going
00:22:20to be in the top three this year. I think this
00:22:21will be the year where he may be in the top five,
00:22:23but he will not be a top three finalist for
00:22:25League MVP. The team. I don't think is good
00:22:27enough. And I do think that there is going to
00:22:29be a bit of a voter pushback on him in primarily
00:22:34because he's already won it multiple times and
00:22:36his numbers aren't going to be I think off the
00:22:38charts enough to where you can justify easily
00:22:41him being there. So and Anthony did like I said,
00:22:44Anthony Davis Tatum Luca, you know, Giannis is
00:22:48always going to be somewhere in the mix shade
00:22:51Gilders. Alexander is going to be, you know,
00:22:53someone to absolutely keep an eye on. He's a big
00:22:56threat. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I mean there's you
00:22:58as you point out there's like four or five guys
00:23:00that you can legitimately see being in that top
00:23:03six top seven top eight conversation all season
00:23:06long, even when they have a bad stretch. They're
00:23:07still going to be probably in that top seven top
00:23:09and eight top eight conversation. Could Lomelo
00:23:13ball get in there the way he said statistically
00:23:17he, you know, you can make a case for that, but
00:23:19that team sucks. And they lost a tough one to
00:23:23Atlanta that showed you like their problems.
00:23:26Yeah, they did. I thought I was, you know, watch
00:23:29a little bit of that game and I thought this was
00:23:30one of those like Watershed Crossroads type games
00:23:34that if they have the kind of season that they
00:23:36are hoping to have they'll look back. They would
00:23:38have looked back at that Atlanta game. It's kind
00:23:39of being almost like the catalyst of that the
00:23:41starting point and for them to not pull that
00:23:44thing out is disappointing, but they're they're
00:23:46going to be a scrappy team. They're going to be
00:23:48kind of like Detroit as far as you know, they're
00:23:49not going to be a pushover, but because of their
00:23:52youth immaturity and their best player who was
00:23:55very talented. He doesn't have that all around. I
00:23:59can carry the team to the playoffs type of game.
00:24:02And so they're going to need some other guys to
00:24:03step up because Lomelo right now all-star absolutely
00:24:07no question about that beyond that. I just don't
00:24:10see Charlotte, you know, them being able to do
00:24:12the kind of things that you would hope if you're
00:24:16if you're a Hornets fan, you'd hope this that
00:24:17they could do at this point. I was I wasn't serious
00:24:20about the Lomelo thing. I just hope you can put I
00:24:24could just hope he can put a full season together
00:24:26and I am high on the Hornets this year. I hope
00:24:28they they can figure it out and Charles Lee's
00:24:32going to have to coach his ass off to him for
00:24:34that. He is you watch that team and you're like
00:24:38he has his hands full and especially when you
00:24:40start seeing Grant pull up the replay sign and
00:24:43start yelling at the ref and Trey man's out there
00:24:46shooting every shot. It's like but they're so
00:24:49talented. They're such a fun team to watch. I'm
00:24:52going to be watching them a lot this year. By
00:24:54the way, Celtics play them twice next week.
00:24:57Are one of those games on a Tuesday? Friday and
00:24:59Saturday. Oh damn time. This is a different different
00:25:03Hornets team. Yeah, I was going to say man because
00:25:05they got a schedule that they have to have a
00:25:09Hornets game in Charlotte on a Tuesday. They got
00:25:11to make that happen. Don't worry everybody. We're
00:25:14going to get into the bench. Everybody's talking
00:25:16about Luke. Of course Luke has his first bad game
00:25:19of the year. You know what Bobby? I wasn't going
00:25:21to go there. I wasn't going to go there because
00:25:23I will say but we can get you can jump into it
00:25:26now. I don't know if it was a situation as much
00:25:30as Luke had a really crappy game as it was X had
00:25:33a great game. I thought I thought I thought
00:25:35exterminator was huge for them in this game and
00:25:39it's not that shocking when you consider that he
00:25:41was in very familiar grounds. I mean, he played
00:25:43at Michigan State had a lot. I mean, it was basically
00:25:46a road. It was a home game on the road for him. A
00:25:49lot of support is the same thing with Al Horford
00:25:51people forget that Al Horford played 90 minutes
00:25:53away from Detroit in Grand Ledge, Michigan. That's
00:25:57what we did his high school ball. It's it's 90
00:25:59miles by the hour and a half drive Northwest of
00:26:03Detroit. And so it's not shocking that I had a
00:26:05good game because a lot of folks there were there
00:26:07specifically to see out but back to Luke. We're
00:26:12three games to the season. He didn't have a great
00:26:14game Luke to me if you're using Luke as like the
00:26:19litmus test of whether you're going to win. You're
00:26:22in trouble. I to me anything that Luke gives you
00:26:24is just icing on the cake. I'm not banking on him
00:26:28to be a significant factor or contributed to
00:26:30winning and losing. He simply has to make sure
00:26:33the ship doesn't sink. He was he did not play
00:26:36well this game. There's no doubt about that, but
00:26:38I don't believe Luke was the reason why Detroit
00:26:41was able to get back in the game. I thought there
00:26:43were some defensive breakdowns and I thought,
00:26:45you know, you got to give Detroit credit. I mean
00:26:47their guys make plays. I mean during as you
00:26:50mentioned earlier is going to be a good player,
00:26:52you know, Kate cutting and we know is a good
00:26:54player him and Ivy. I think are, you know, they're
00:26:56not there yet, but they look like a very talented
00:27:00promising backcourt of the future in the NBA. I
00:27:03think they're three or four years away from being
00:27:05really, really good in this League. They're not
00:27:07there yet. They're good players, but I think for
00:27:10them to be really on that short list of great
00:27:13backcourts. They're still three or four years away
00:27:15from that. Yeah, and then, you know, not to go
00:27:19too far down that road, but Kate's still turning
00:27:22the ball. I'm about as big of a fan of his is you
00:27:25can you can find but I think they said he had
00:27:29like 15 turnovers over the last two games. They
00:27:32had a basketball right into this one. So seven
00:27:34tonight that killed them shooting still not quite
00:27:36where you want it. He came into this 133 from
00:27:38three then goes to for eight. So still looking
00:27:43for the consistency is their leader and tone
00:27:47setter offensively that you're looking for now
00:27:49and he is, you know, he's young but he's getting
00:27:51into his career a little bit here. They haven't
00:27:53helped him with the personnel by any means last
00:27:56year coaching disaster. So you give him some
00:27:58leeway here, but you do want to start to see at
00:28:01this point of his career a little bit more
00:28:02consistency and seven turnovers in a game like
00:28:05this is tough Ivy on the other hand like to see
00:28:08the shot coming around like to see the aggressiveness.
00:28:11I thought he was a big reason they got back into
00:28:13the was he was the Boston had problems with him.
00:28:18They really had problems keeping him from getting
00:28:21to where he wanted to get to and I don't know
00:28:23whether it was one of those things where you
00:28:25know, they're willing to give him certain
00:28:27opportunities so that Kate wouldn't or other
00:28:29guys wouldn't I don't know what the strategy
00:28:31was specifically to deal with him, but he's a
00:28:33problem very quick show the ability to score on
00:28:37a couple different levels that knocked down a
00:28:38couple threes, which I've I've not been impressed
00:28:42with him as far as his perimeter shooting is
00:28:44concerned and he chipped in, you know, with five
00:28:47boards and six assists and maybe to me the most
00:28:50impressive stat that he had was just one turnover
00:28:53and for a guy that's looking to attack and
00:28:55score to only turn the ball over one time against
00:28:58the team that has as many good defenders on the
00:29:00wing and perimeter is Boston. This was a good
00:29:03game for Jaden. So the key for Detroit, obviously
00:29:08the key is trying to build off of this for Boston.
00:29:10What do you learn from this? What are what are
00:29:13your takeaways from this that can help you as
00:29:15you prepare for the Bucks right around the corner?
00:29:18It's the rotation question. Where are you going
00:29:21to go for the extra minutes? I think because
00:29:23for all the Luke hate here and I get it coming
00:29:27out of this one. The bigger problem is that you
00:29:30didn't get quality bench minutes as a whole in
00:29:32the second half and I thought you mentioned Tatum
00:29:34foul trouble that definitely threw off the rotation
00:29:37a little bit because there were some weird subs
00:29:39in the second half weird combinations. You're
00:29:41still trying to double big to get by and Tillman
00:29:44Cornet. I have to look back and see if that
00:29:46actually went out there in the second half, but
00:29:48that's something you're playing a lot in this
00:29:50one and I don't know if there's enough spacing
00:29:52with that combination. I know Tillman's hitting
00:29:54threes right now, but you know, is he drawing
00:29:56defenders out quite yet? Probably not and then
00:30:00I this just hit me. It didn't hit me while I was
00:30:03watching the game because the rotation said and
00:30:05I I just figured it was what it was. I thought
00:30:08for sure. We're going to see more Kata in this
00:30:10one. That's what Bobby I was that's exactly the
00:30:12point. I was I was waiting to bring up. How do
00:30:15you go from 12 and 7 and a big role in Washington
00:30:18to zero tonight? I don't get that particularly
00:30:21against a team whose bigs seem to match up. Yeah,
00:30:25match up well with him because Detroit has young
00:30:28athletic springy bigs who are active on a glass.
00:30:32The only thing I can think of Bobby is that
00:30:34because of the way Al was shooting the ball in
00:30:36the first half. They didn't want to disrupt that
00:30:39rhythm that he was in. That's the only thing
00:30:42that would make any kind of sense why we saw
00:30:44no Kata because again, when you look at just the
00:30:47way that you know, Luke wasn't great and you look
00:30:49at some of the things that Detroit was having
00:30:51success on specifically offensive rebounds and
00:30:53things of that nature and the way that they're
00:30:56bigs didn't get a lot of touches. But when they
00:31:00did they were impactful. I mean as you pointed
00:31:02out, you know, during what didn't miss a shot
00:31:05had, you know, a really really good game. So
00:31:07you didn't miss one either, right? And so
00:31:11Kata the one thing that you can always count
00:31:14on with Kata is he is going to be a disruptor
00:31:17around the rim. He may not block shots. He but
00:31:20he's going to alter them and if he doesn't alter
00:31:22or block is going to foul folks. So he's going
00:31:25to make things a little bit uncomfortable around
00:31:27the rim and I thought they could have used, you
00:31:29know, a two three five minute burst like that
00:31:33from someone. So I that was a little surprising.
00:31:36Yeah, I would I would agree with you in that.
00:31:39Yeah, and I guess the only other thing I would
00:31:41think about is he had some defensive struggles
00:31:43or positioning problems against Washington and
00:31:46it's just sort of part of the game now for him.
00:31:49I feel like he's going in the right direction on
00:31:51that and I feel like you're seeing them put him
00:31:53in positions to succeed more often. Like I there
00:31:56was a great play late in that Washington game
00:31:58where he's roaming and he just kind of flashed
00:32:00against. I think it was Kula Bali on the baseline
00:32:04and Kula Bali just sees him and throws it away
00:32:07and Jalen caught it and ran the other way. So
00:32:10you got to let him play through some stuff to
00:32:13grow and again, I'm not there. I don't see a ton
00:32:16of updates coming out of there, but that one's
00:32:19confusing to me. I'm sure Joe would have said
00:32:21matchup. So there's just some sort of thing, you
00:32:23know, maybe it was rotations like you said the
00:32:25way Horford was playing, but I thought you'd see
00:32:28at least a little bit with Hauser still down
00:32:31because what's happening if you don't play Kata,
00:32:34you're not playing any of those backup wings. You
00:32:36run the starters a little longer the bench
00:32:38rotations a little tighter and you know on a
00:32:42road trip here early in the year with guys
00:32:44playing some solid minutes. I'm sure you did
00:32:46run into a little bit of maybe fatigue or just
00:32:49you know lapses there that you know three minutes
00:32:52without scoring or whatever. It might have been
00:32:54I just feel like playing deeper into your rotation
00:32:57is a good idea during the regular season,
00:32:58especially when you're looking for someone who
00:33:00you can start to rely on a little bit right now
00:33:03and you know, Kata might not do everything
00:33:06perfectly but for a guy like that who you're
00:33:08trying to develop and trust you got to let him
00:33:11make some mistakes. You got to let him play
00:33:13through some stuff. So that one to me, I'm
00:33:16really puzzled about especially with Hauser out
00:33:18and you know, obviously tough to see Hauser not
00:33:20out there again for the second straight game.
00:33:22And you know, it's something like he said the
00:33:24other night Sherrod. He felt in the summer dealt
00:33:27with it a little bit in the summer. Just kind
00:33:29of woke up didn't feel it on opening night woke
00:33:31up in Washington for that game and they knew
00:33:35pretty early he couldn't go and they ruled him
00:33:37out pretty early today. So this one could linger
00:33:40a little bit as we know back back pain can be
00:33:42a little troublesome. Yeah. Yeah and but and to
00:33:45me, you know, this is why you develop your
00:33:50players when you don't necessarily have minutes
00:33:54for them to play for these opportunities like
00:33:56this would have been it would have really been
00:33:59a shocker Peterson was out there, but you know,
00:34:03the one thing that we saw in the preseason was
00:34:07the Celtics utilize those end of the bench guys
00:34:09and they show that they could play Pritchett
00:34:12showed he could play Peterson show that he
00:34:13could play, you know, Jordan Walsh, you know,
00:34:16we haven't talked about him. He is shown that
00:34:18he can play at this level and those guys are
00:34:20only going to get better if they get out there
00:34:22with opportunities to play and I thought this
00:34:24was one of those games where when you have Tatum
00:34:27in early foul trouble, you don't have, you know,
00:34:30you know, Sam Hauser, you know, Luke is not
00:34:32playing, you know, his best game. Why not expand
00:34:35the rotation by one guy whether it's Kato,
00:34:38whether it's Pearson, whether it's Walsh, but do
00:34:41something to find that balance between finding
00:34:45guys who can that you can develop in real game
00:34:49situations and hopefully find a way to win. And
00:34:53I just thought again, Joe's he's showing himself
00:34:56to be a very very good coach. One of the best
00:34:58in the game, even if none of the GM's NBA think
00:35:00so, but I thought this was an opportunity for
00:35:03him to just really tweak that rotation a little
00:35:06bit and be justified in doing so against a team
00:35:10that you should be able to beat without necessarily
00:35:12having to do that. But if you got a chance to
00:35:13develop your guys and put them in real game
00:35:16situations and real pressure type moments, why
00:35:20wouldn't you do that? Particularly early in the
00:35:22season Bobby where you know, if you stumble in
00:35:24those moments, you still got another 78 games,
00:35:2779 games to get this thing, right? So yeah, and
00:35:33they found ways to play all four of those guys
00:35:36in Washington side. That's normally what I would
00:35:38say is this three guys in front of him and those
00:35:40guys ate all the minutes and this one, I guess
00:35:43maybe you played smaller it for longer stretches
00:35:45and that cut out the fourth big man. So I'd like
00:35:49to see him. I'd like to see him especially now
00:35:50where Porzingis is out because once Porzingis
00:35:52comes back and is integrating and that's when
00:35:54you know, you're not going to see any of them.
00:35:56So just a small surprise from this one. I do
00:35:59want to shout out our contest which is still
00:36:02rolling. You guys have plenty of opportunities

00:40:59All right, Sherrod. What else you got on this
00:41:01game? Oh goodness. Well, let's let's get into Al
00:41:06we haven't really talked much about Al on the
00:41:09show so far and I he was huge in the first half
00:41:12obviously it was good. It's good to see with the
00:41:18struggles. He went through early in that preseason
00:41:22game. The only preseason game we saw him a slow
00:41:24ramp up. You're wondering what's going on here.
00:41:27And now as you said earlier, you get a vintage
00:41:29Al game early and you know that this is still in
00:41:32him for the rest of the year. Yeah, and you need
00:41:34to see that from time to time because I think
00:41:37Al, you know, he's at that point where you know,
00:41:39it's you know, it's not no shade at Al but he's
00:41:42not the guy that's going to go out there and get
00:41:44you 20.78 rebounds a block or two and four assists
00:41:48a game. That guy is not coming back, but we still
00:41:52know that guy is there from every now and then
00:41:54he can, you know, conjure up that guy and bring
00:41:56that guy front and center to help the Celtics be
00:41:59successful. And so it was good to see that early
00:42:02on in the season because we didn't see much about
00:42:06before the season started and it raised a lot of
00:42:09questions and concerns about how much did Al in
00:42:11fact having a tank? Were they, you know, keeping
00:42:14him on the sideline to just because he just wasn't
00:42:17right physically or were they just being overly
00:42:19cautious? And you know, so far, it looks as though
00:42:23they, this falls into the overly cautious category
00:42:26because Al, when he has played, has looked pretty
00:42:28good. But I thought as this game wore on, father
00:42:33time was definitely, I thought, playing a factor.
00:42:36Al wasn't nearly as impactful in the second half
00:42:38as the first and it wasn't just a shot making. It
00:42:41was little things like moving the ball, putting
00:42:44the ball on the floor and getting to spots and
00:42:46forcing the defense to adjust to either what he's
00:42:48doing or position themselves where he had a good
00:42:52look at the basket. That stuff didn't really
00:42:54happen in the second half as much as we saw in the
00:42:57first. And so, and that part of that is again, I
00:43:00think just Al's just an older player, but I give
00:43:04him a lot of credit for really stepping up, doing
00:43:07a lot of the things that he is capable of doing
00:43:10and making Detroit pay. I don't think there's any
00:43:12question that part of Detroit's game plan going
00:43:15was to focus more on Tatum and Brown and just live
00:43:19with whatever Al Horford gives them. You always
00:43:21know that's the case when he gets all those shots
00:43:23and he had a game in Washington just a game ago
00:43:28where I think he only took two shots and scored
00:43:32zero points in that game. And that's when you know
00:43:34an opponent's playing you more straight up when
00:43:36Brown and Tatum have those big nights and Al
00:43:38Horford's not shooting as much in this game. I
00:43:40think they started zone. So, you know, you're
00:43:43getting shots for other guys against that zone.
00:43:45Guys are getting on the offensive glass. Holiday
00:43:47had a nice one early. So, it's all about how the
00:43:49defense is guarding you. And I thought the Pistons
00:43:52did, of course, with JB Bickerstaff there, went
00:43:54to some different looks that required a little
00:43:56more passing. And credit to the Celtics who keep
00:43:59that ball moving early in this season. It feels
00:44:02like ball movement and getting off the ball quickly
00:44:05and getting into the half court and, you know,
00:44:07doing those multiple pass sequences, including
00:44:09the ones that got Holiday, those big ones late,
00:44:11are bigger emphasis this time around. It's
00:44:13definitely more pace and pop to this offense,
00:44:15which in the third quarter, you saw it go the
00:44:17other way. And that's why they let that lead
00:44:19side and got a little more stagnant in the second
00:44:22half. Yeah, and that that pace and pop you're
00:44:24talking about, it leads to the promise that this
00:44:26team has of being incredibly great night in
00:44:30and night out. Even when they're not playing
00:44:31their best basketball, they can still beat you
00:44:33badly. You know, Al Horford, you know, he's
00:44:37part of that whack-a-mole offense that the Celtics
00:44:40have, where the minute you think you've like
00:44:42limited Tatum and you lit it limited Brown, you
00:44:45give an Al Horford wide open shots and he's
00:44:46knocking those down. And if you find a way to
00:44:48play them straight up, you get games like you
00:44:50had in Washington, where Tatum and Brown go off
00:44:52and then you've got the wild card night in night
00:44:54out, Derrick White, who's playing some of his
00:44:56best basketball that isn't getting any kind of
00:44:59real attention. I mean, this is this is a guy
00:45:01that's getting you basically 20 points a game
00:45:03and he's basically your four for fifth option
00:45:06and he's doing it in a very quiet, silent
00:45:10assassin-like way and and still making big
00:45:12plays defensively. He had that blocked shot in
00:45:15the second half, you know, I think was on a
00:45:16Jayden Ivey drive. That was just just the timing
00:45:20of it was flawless, you know, and those are
00:45:23the but that's what you expect from the best
00:45:24shot blocking guard in the NBA. So you start
00:45:27going down this, you start going down the roster
00:45:30and the guys were playing in their top seven,
00:45:32top eight and they're really, it's really hard
00:45:34to say if I limit this guy, then we can win or
00:45:38if I limit these two guys, we can win. They
00:45:41make it very difficult for teams to find success
00:45:43against them. Very difficult. I'm glad you
00:45:46brought up the white block big moment in this
00:45:49game and he had three of them. So he's doing
00:45:52it again in terms of being a threat around the
00:45:54rim. I think he blocked multiple shots in this
00:45:56game around the rim, but none bigger in a tie
00:46:01game after missing a second chance three off
00:46:03the side of the backboard. He comes through
00:46:05in blocks. I think it was Harris inside and
00:46:08then Tatum ends up getting followed and in a
00:46:10couple of free throws to go back up by two there
00:46:13late. So what can you say bad shooting night
00:46:18for white didn't get any threes to go. But in
00:46:21the end, he makes a defensive play and probably
00:46:24the definitive play in this game in a tie game.
00:46:26Yeah. Yeah. And that's what you that's what
00:46:28you come to expect from Derek white, you know,
00:46:30just very unassuming but impactful for the Celtics
00:46:33and again, it you don't want to sound as though
00:46:38they've got this Larry O'Brien trophy in a bag,
00:46:40but it's hard not to feel as though this team
00:46:43is a overwhelming favorite when you look at the
00:46:46things that they do night in night out and even
00:46:49on nights where they don't have their a game,
00:46:51which tonight was one of those nights. You start
00:46:54going through the positives and there's a
00:46:56consistently outweigh the negatives. I mean,
00:46:59Jalen Brown had that stretch where he wasn't,
00:47:01you know, he was just basically playing isoball
00:47:04Luke Hornet did not have a good game. You don't
00:47:06have Sam Hauser. Obviously, you're you know,
00:47:10you know what life is with like without
00:47:12presenting it. So you're used to that. But then
00:47:14you start looking at well, how do they get this
00:47:16win? And then you look at little things like
00:47:18Derek White's block Tatum with a block and some
00:47:20big free throws Jalen Brown settling down with
00:47:23and you know, they had a he had a sequence where
00:47:25he made for had like four defensive possessions
00:47:28that were really good. And then you got Al
00:47:30Horford knocking out shots and then all of a
00:47:32sudden you realize that yeah, this wasn't a
00:47:33flawless game. This wasn't a perfect game and
00:47:35you might even call it a good game and yet they
00:47:38still managed to get the victory and that is
00:47:40what great teams do. They win often in spite of
00:47:45them not being good. They still find a way to beat
00:47:48you.
00:47:50Yeah, definitely and it was a full team effort
00:47:52to get there tonight. Drew White Horford all
00:47:55timely moment. Shout out to purchase someone
00:47:57saying we didn't give Pritchard any love. I
00:47:58don't think anyone out any other show has had
00:48:01multiple hosts saying that Pritchard could win
00:48:04six man of the year that I that's what you know
00:48:07what Bobby I've tried to like kind of keep my
00:48:12Peyton Pritchard enthusiasm in check because it
00:48:15makes people weird around us as if we're you
00:48:18know, as if Peyton Pritchard is not a good
00:48:20player. Listen, he's going to play minutes. I
00:48:23think this this was a this game is an example
00:48:25of what Peyton Pritchard means to this team. I
00:48:27mean hit 19 points in 19 minutes. I mean, that's
00:48:31not normal most and when you and again, I come
00:48:35back to the fact that this Celtics team is so
00:48:38insanely stacked and yet Peyton Pritchard is
00:48:41still going to be in that 2025 minute range and
00:48:45if they have the kind of season, I think they
00:48:46have because I think they're going to have
00:48:48they're going to win more games this year than
00:48:50any Celtics team ever. I think this is going to
00:48:52be they're going to be that good and when you
00:48:54have an unprecedented season in terms of wins
00:48:56and losses, everyone gets way more credit and
00:48:59praise than they probably deserve. Peyton is
00:49:01going to be in that group because Peyton, his
00:49:03numbers aren't necessarily going to be what you
00:49:05expect from a six-man-of-the-year candidate.
00:49:07But when you look at his impact, you look at
00:49:09what this team will do. I think as a group all
00:49:11season, it's hard to ignore that the guy coming
00:49:14off the bench on this incredibly stacked team
00:49:18is putting up really good numbers relative to
00:49:20the opportunities getting to play and he's
00:49:23impacting winning. So I'm still, you know, Peyton,
00:49:26he had a rough opening game, but really I expect
00:49:30Peyton to be one of the top, if not the best
00:49:34reserve in the NBA this year because of what I
00:49:37think he'll do impact-wise more so than the numbers.
00:49:40I wonder if that line has moved at all in the
00:49:43six-man odds because he was starting to creep
00:49:45in there a little bit. You started to see him
00:49:47make some noise there going into the season.
00:49:50Wow. Not much movement there. Malik Monk, Miles
00:49:55McBride, early favorites in that award alongside
00:49:58Ben McMatheran, who I think starting for India,
00:50:00I want to say. Yeah. Right now, Naj Reed still
00:50:03coming off the bench from Minnesota. He's going
00:50:04to be tough to beat there. But after that, like
00:50:08Buddy Heal, Karis Levert, it's a talented group
00:50:11of guys, Steven Chenzo maybe, but I think Pritchard's
00:50:15closer than people think. If he can maintain
00:50:17this consistency, and the tough thing for him
00:50:19here, second half, one shot attempt, nine minutes,
00:50:23minus nine for that bench. So they were a little
00:50:25tighter with the bench group in the second half
00:50:28and played the starters a lot more. So that
00:50:30limited his opportunities out there. 20 minutes
00:50:32for Holiday in the second half, 20 for Tatum, and
00:50:35then 19 each for White and Brown. Horford, the
00:50:38only guy that got a little relief there with Al.
00:50:40So a hot start for Pritchard, but they played
00:50:44a tighter rotation in the second half. So he
00:50:46didn't get the boom from him in the second half,
00:50:48only 19 minutes for Pritchard in this one. I want
00:50:50to circle back to our giveaway because we have

00:51:21tickets and show the people what they're going
00:51:23to win, Jackson. A Tatum autograph ball, 2K, along
00:51:29with a PS5. So you're going to be able to play
00:51:342K25 with Tatum on the cover on your new PS5 and
00:51:41hang up the Jason Tatum autograph ball in your
00:51:43room. And the way it's looking for Jason Tatum
00:51:45this year, Sharon, all of this could become a
00:51:47little more valuable, especially the signature
00:51:49ball. I mean, the assault that he has put on teams
00:51:54has been impressive. And the thing that I like
00:51:57really about the way Tatum is playing is that
00:52:00there's a heightened level of composure in how
00:52:03he's going about his business. Like he's scoring
00:52:06at a really good clip, and there seems to be, you
00:52:09know, he doesn't seem too high or too low or too
00:52:11emotionally engaged, good or bad, with his play.
00:52:14He doesn't, he's just playing the game. He's
00:52:16just doing what he's supposed to do. And, you
00:52:19know, again, I touched on this earlier. I love
00:52:21the fact that Tatum is playing both ends of the
00:52:23floor. I think his defense has been and continues
00:52:26to be one of the most underrated aspects of his
00:52:29game. Tatum is a better defender than he gets
00:52:31credit for. It's just that he's such a phenomenal
00:52:34score that we often forget that, you know, he's
00:52:36he's out there doing some good things at the
00:52:38defensive end of the floor, too. And so his
00:52:40ability to continue to evolve as an all-around
00:52:43elite talent at both ends of the floor is going
00:52:46to be part of the narrative for him to have a
00:52:48legitimate shot at this League MVP award.
00:52:53Yep, and for the contest, again, hard hat gets

00:53:20than that. 10,000 entries and you can get 5,000

00:53:42of entries right now over there at clnsmedia.com

00:53:51to clnsmedia.com slash ticket. So a ton of ways
00:53:54to get involved in this contest right now and
00:53:56really exciting prizes for that and Celtics win
00:54:01124-118 tonight. I think we've said all we need
00:54:04to about this one. A good way to pull a win out
00:54:06of what almost ended up being a bad game, 1-9
00:54:09second half for Brown, bogged down offense in
00:54:12the third quarter. I think the third quarter
00:54:14final score ended up being 31-21. Detroit,
00:54:19which I'd have to imagine is the fewest points
00:54:22by the Celtics in a quarter this year, but
00:54:24turnaround with a 30-25 fourth quarter. We
00:54:26mentioned White's block, Tatum with a couple
00:54:29free throws, turnaround jumper that put the
00:54:31game out of reach as well as Jalen Brown at
00:54:34the free throw line when they went and played
00:54:36the free throw game late, coming through with
00:54:37a couple makes at the line there. So Celtics
00:54:40start 3-0. They're up next against the Bucks
00:54:42at home for a brief stop at TD Garden before
00:54:46going on the road again to Indiana and Charlotte
00:54:48next week. I want to talk about a small news
00:54:52item today though, but one I think the people
00:54:54care about here, Sherrod. So the G League held
00:54:57their draft today, rosters got finalized, training
00:55:01camp is going to start next week for the G
00:55:02League. So we're going to see a lot of these
00:55:04Celtics guys head up to Maine, especially the
00:55:06two-way guys I'd imagine, Davidson, Peterson,
00:55:09Watson. We reported it, we put it out
00:55:14there that it was likely Lonnie Walker was
00:55:16going to join Maine's roster this year and I
00:55:19guess the possibility is still there, but after
00:55:22the G League draft today, Boston, or Maine
00:55:25rather, put out their training camp lineup or
00:55:27roster and Walker not on the list, did not sign
00:55:34with Maine here to begin their season and some
00:55:38rumblings or were some rumblings a week ago
00:55:40from some of the European reporters out there
00:55:43that Real Madrid has some interest in him.
00:55:46Maybe he's just looking around and waiting for
00:55:48an opportunity to come up. I know the Knicks
00:55:49have some open roster spots that they have to
00:55:51fill by I think the end of the week or so here.
00:55:55So no Walker on Maine's roster along with some
00:56:01things probably breaking different ways across
00:56:03the league and maybe even overseas at this
00:56:05point has to make you think that at this point
00:56:09at least for now, you're not going to see Lonnie
00:56:12Walker on Maine's roster to start this year
00:56:14after the Celtics cut him last week.
00:56:16Yeah, I'm just still to some extent just surprised
00:56:20that Lonnie Walker has been as engaged with the
00:56:23Celtics as he has been to be honest when you
00:56:25look at the talent you look at the the need for
00:56:29a guy like Lonnie Walker throughout the league
00:56:30for him to even be contemplating possibly being
00:56:33part of the Celtics family is just it's a surprise
00:56:37it really is so I it's not a surprise that want
00:56:40Lonnie is not on that roster because Lonnie is
00:56:43a guy that when you look what he has done and
00:56:45what he has the potential to do.
00:56:47He should be on an NBA roster.
00:56:49He should be playing overseas.
00:56:51He should be in a situation where he's going
00:56:53to be on the floor, you know more than just spot
00:56:57duty, which is what he would be doing in Boston.
00:56:59So it's not a surprise.
00:57:00I think that to me the only thing that is surprising
00:57:02and all this is that Lonnie is still available
00:57:05that to me is the biggest surprise if he winds
00:57:08up on that main roster that to me would be the
00:57:12surprise because it would feel like this is a guy
00:57:15that should have more options to exercise and
00:57:18pursue in what we've seen.
00:57:20So, you know, if he winds up in Maine, that's
00:57:23great great for the Celtics, but I don't think
00:57:26anyone should hold their breath on that happening
00:57:28because Lonnie's to in the limited time that
00:57:30we've seen him in Boston.
00:57:32And for those of us who watched him when he was
00:57:34in Brooklyn and the San Antonio, we know that
00:57:36this guy's an NBA player.
00:57:38He's an NBA rotational player and that's not
00:57:41going to happen in Boston.
00:57:44No, and I guess that shouldn't come as a huge
00:57:46surprise.
00:57:47I'm slightly surprised that he's not going to
00:57:49wait it out there because I don't think staying
00:57:52home is a great idea if that's the way he's
00:57:55going to go and we are getting so little mic
00:57:58pop in there charade, but I think he's got to
00:58:03sign either a deal with a NBA team in the near
00:58:07future here or go overseas and go that road and
00:58:11I know some teams overseas have their seasons
00:58:13end early you get freed up to go back to the
00:58:16NBA if there's some 10-day opportunities or
00:58:18something like that.
00:58:19I just think you have to keep playing and I know
00:58:21there's a notion that all right, what's he going
00:58:22to prove in the G League and I get that but I
00:58:26don't think sitting homes ever a good idea and
00:58:28I know he's not as old or his injury prone.
00:58:30Well, he's had his deal of injuries too.
00:58:32But what Ben Simmons did not the same situation
00:58:35but just going home and sitting down in
00:58:37Philadelphia that year Jay Crowder that year in
00:58:40Phoenix sitting out half of that year.
00:58:42I feel like sitting on the sideline is almost
00:58:44the beginning of the end and I know you can
00:58:46still get your work in and do your routine and
00:58:48all that but you got to play especially if you
00:58:50want to be ready for when that opportunity
00:58:52comes if you want to prove yourself if you want
00:58:54to show yourself you got to be on a team playing
00:58:56somewhere.
00:58:57It doesn't have to be Maine.
00:58:58It doesn't even have to be here in the States,
00:59:01but I think he just needs to stay on the court
00:59:03if he wants to get an opportunity and be ready
00:59:06for an opportunity especially because you can
00:59:08get a small opportunity especially if it's later
00:59:10in the year and not have a ton of minutes not
00:59:13have a ton of shots and have to show yourself
00:59:15capable and again, he did a pretty good job of
00:59:17it here in Boston.
00:59:18It just came down to money.
00:59:20It just came down to the roster space and minutes
00:59:22like he you see all these guys on the bottom
00:59:24end of the roster Shroud as we talked about here
00:59:25tonight.
00:59:26He wouldn't have been playing right now and that's
00:59:28the toughest thing when you're talking about
00:59:31paying a guy 11 million dollars.
00:59:33Do you need him?
00:59:34Do you have minutes for him?
00:59:35Things could change here, but he's not the only
00:59:37one O'Shea Brissett still unsigned to begin this
00:59:39year.
00:59:40Markel Fultz still unsigned as well as Crowder
00:59:42who we just mentioned among others.
00:59:45So teams don't need these guys right now.
00:59:48They don't want to pay these guys right now for
00:59:50one reason or another and I think it's best to
00:59:54be playing somewhere and I know Maine's not the
00:59:57most alluring situation and you're not going to
00:59:59get a ton of money out of it, but at least you're
01:00:03on people's mind.
01:00:05Scouts are looking at you, you know, you're one
01:00:07of the guys who are just doing something when
01:00:10opportunity arises around the league when they
01:00:12need someone.
01:00:12So I don't know where the story is going.
01:00:15I hope he's able to stay here in the NBA because
01:00:17it's really become a captivating story.
01:00:19I know the fans are super excited about him and
01:00:22you know, if he goes somewhere else and punches
01:00:24his ticket to a rotation spot or has a great
01:00:27redemption story.
01:00:28I know that's going to have a lot of Celtics fans
01:00:30talking about.
01:00:30All right, should you have kept them, you know,
01:00:33you know, should he have made this team and Jake
01:00:35Fisher did have a report today.
01:00:38I think he's mentioned before that the Celtics
01:00:40were looking into trying to move off a contract
01:00:43like Jaden Springer's to try to keep Walker
01:00:46involved here and that could still be a possibility
01:00:48in February if the Celtics do end up making that
01:00:51decision here.
01:00:52But again, it's October 26, Sherrod.
01:00:57I don't think you can just sit on the sideline
01:00:59from October to February waiting for the Celtics
01:01:02to figure out what they're going to do here.
01:01:04No, you don't do that.
01:01:05But I don't think you need to necessarily be
01:01:07there day one of Maine's training camp.
01:01:10Yeah, I think if you are Lonnie, you are going
01:01:13to play this the way I think it's the smart game
01:01:16is to wait for a little bit.
01:01:18See what opportunities present themselves.
01:01:20Keep yourself in shape and plan to, you know,
01:01:23re-engage yourself in terms of on-court activity
01:01:25at some point, you know, before Christmas just
01:01:29to get the car just to show that you're still
01:01:31alive. You're still healthy because the one
01:01:32thing Bobby that you also have to take into
01:01:34account is that you want to make sure not only
01:01:37that you get back and show what you can do,
01:01:39but you want to make sure that you do that
01:01:40and not run the risk of re-aggravating an injury
01:01:44or getting hurt because then all of a sudden
01:01:47you're really, really screwed if you're Lonnie
01:01:50Walker. So I understand why you he will not be
01:01:54there for day one of Maine's training camp
01:01:56or any teams, you know, you know roster unless
01:01:59it's an NBA roster with a guaranteed spot, but
01:02:02I think I do Bobby think at some point in the
01:02:05next month or two, he will be back to in some
01:02:09on some team somewhere whether it's Maine,
01:02:12whether it's another NBA team, whether it's
01:02:14overseas team because I think he understands
01:02:16that I do at some point sooner rather than
01:02:19later need to remind people that I can play
01:02:21what I don't have to do the full gauntlet from
01:02:24like now until whenever that day is I think
01:02:28he I think the smart thing for them him to do
01:02:30is to lay low for a little bit see what teams
01:02:35are looking to do because he because for all
01:02:37we know Bobby there may be teams that have
01:02:39reached out to him and said look we don't
01:02:40have a spot now, but we're working on a couple
01:02:42of things to try to free something up. So just
01:02:45sit tight for a little bit and we'll see what
01:02:47we can do and that will make a lot of sense
01:02:49that would be a logical reason to not be joining
01:02:52Maine or anything like that. My gut tells me
01:02:56that that's that's some of what why he's not
01:02:59actively on a roster now that there are teams
01:03:02that are I've reached out to his camp to just
01:03:04say that we're looking to do some things to
01:03:06just sit tight for a little bit and if you're
01:03:07Lonnie Walker, that's not a hard request to
01:03:10turn down. It's an easy request to turn down
01:03:12because it's not like you've got this place
01:03:15and space that you can go to that's going to
01:03:18satisfy what you're looking for. So for him,
01:03:21you know, he wants he wants to be wanted. He
01:03:23wants to be somewhere that's going to give him
01:03:25an opportunity to play and if that means, you
01:03:27know, sitting at home working out and an empty
01:03:29gym for like another month or two, then you do
01:03:32that because that's not a big sacrifice to make
01:03:34if your dream is to get back into the NBA and
01:03:37playing on a roster, which town wise he should
01:03:40be able to do. Yeah, that's a good point. Maybe
01:03:44there's a situation right now. That's saying
01:03:46something might break here in the near future.
01:03:48So just be patient and wait it out because in
01:03:51my mind, the expectation was that he was going
01:03:53to go to Maine and join that team to start their
01:03:56year next week and he's not on the roster, which
01:03:58could be telling of something here. So maybe
01:04:01something changed. Maybe this is an opportunity
01:04:03coming up over the next week or so here for
01:04:05Walker will keep you updated. If news does break
01:04:08on that front. I know again. I'm looking at the
01:04:10Knicks. He was in Brooklyn last year. They have
01:04:12a couple of roster spots to fill here and they
01:04:14just lost Landry Shamit who's going to be out
01:04:16here for a little while with a shoulder injury.
01:04:18So comparable player comparable skill set that
01:04:22maybe they'll look at to try to fill one of those
01:04:24slots once they are forced to I think you can
01:04:28roll with 12 for like a week or so or something
01:04:30like that. So I'm going to keep an eye on New
01:04:32York on that front. If there's an NBA opportunity
01:04:35for him or maybe it is overseas, but Lonnie Walker
01:04:38not joining Maine's training camp roster the
01:04:42news today in Celtics land next up for the Celtics
01:04:46after the three and I'll start here is going to
01:04:47be back in Boston. So we'll have coverage on
01:04:51site at TD Garden against the box, which is a
01:04:56marquee matchup in the East here charade a little
01:04:58bit of a new look Bucks team though one that's
01:05:00still dealing with a major Chris Middleton injury.
01:05:04I don't think he's ready to go for Monday and
01:05:06it's a back-to-back for the Bucks to they're going
01:05:08to play in Brooklyn. I believe tomorrow. So a
01:05:11chance for you to watch the Bucks ahead of Monday's
01:05:14game in Boston as they go against the Brooklyn
01:05:16team has been pretty hapless to start this year,
01:05:19but without Middleton you're talking about Lillard
01:05:23Giannis them trying to figure out their chemistry
01:05:26this year and start playing off each other a
01:05:28little bit more into year two together a couple
01:05:30of new additions from the summer underrated ones
01:05:32and Torian Prince who's a pretty good wing
01:05:34defender slash shooter Gary Trent who brings
01:05:37some shooting to that lineup and Brooke Lopez
01:05:39who you know, if you've been watching the NBA
01:05:41for even a couple years at this point, you know
01:05:43what he's bringing to the table. So that's going
01:05:46to be a challenge. I'm interested to see how this
01:05:47front court that did struggle a little bit tonight
01:05:50against physicality size athleticism in Detroit
01:05:54does dealing with Giannis Brooke the front court
01:05:57that you have there in Milwaukee. I think this
01:05:59could be the Celtics toughest game or toughest
01:06:02start to finish game. We've seen yet. Yeah. Yeah,
01:06:05they match up, you know, Milwaukee matches up
01:06:07in a way with Boston that it it forces Boston
01:06:13to really strengthen areas that they're not great
01:06:16at and as you mentioned the physicality that's
01:06:19that's something that you know, I think on a you
01:06:21know, Boston perimeter wise I think are okay in
01:06:23that regard but front court wise you have to look
01:06:26at Milwaukee and just say that they're they're
01:06:28much more physical team, you know, and we haven't
01:06:30even mentioned a guy like Bobby Portis who I think
01:06:32is a major problem. That's the one guy outside
01:06:35of Giannis Satithicumpo that if I'm the Celtics,
01:06:38I'm most concerned about because he's a guy that
01:06:40can you know, he can stretch the floor. He can
01:06:42bang. He can finish around a rim. He's a decent
01:06:45defender. So the he poses a lot of potential
01:06:48problems for you. But again, this is another one
01:06:51of those games where the Celtics simply have to
01:06:56figure out which areas of the floor of the game
01:06:59they can exploit make the most of those and just
01:07:02find a way to win. I think for Jason Tatum, this
01:07:05is I'm really looking forward to seeing how he
01:07:08deals with Giannis and he's not going to be
01:07:10guarding him all game, but he will be masterful
01:07:12from at times and vice versa. And if Tatum is
01:07:16going to have a really really strong MVP as
01:07:20candidacy. These are the kind of games that are
01:07:23going to jumpstart that these are the kind of
01:07:25games that will absolutely add more fuel to that
01:07:27fire. If you're able to outshine a guy that won
01:07:31this award previously, so I'm looking forward to
01:07:35the game. I'm looking forward to that particular
01:07:37matchup. I just love watching Giannis, especially
01:07:40when he goes at it with this team. It's always
01:07:43great and the games in Boston were weird last year.
01:07:46The Celtics rolled early almost like tonight and
01:07:49then in the second half the Bucks stormed back
01:07:51Lillard got going and shots started falling from
01:07:54Milwaukee and they made it close late in each of
01:07:56those games, but too little too late in both of
01:08:00them and they actually destroyed the Celtics weird
01:08:03schedule times and some stuff like that. I think
01:08:05guys weren't available for the second game, but
01:08:08they did score two blowout wins over the Celtics
01:08:10last year and it was obviously a transition season
01:08:12changing coaches bunch of stuff going on there
01:08:15and they don't have Middleton right now, which
01:08:17is a tough guy to be without in rotation. But if
01:08:19you look at some of the stats for the Bucks through
01:08:21two games Giannis putting up 31 a game Lillard
01:08:2429 shooting 38 on 12 threes a game. So you're
01:08:28going to be able to get threes up there with
01:08:30Boston and Prince is hitting 83% to start Porter
01:08:34shooting 50% from three on you know, just a couple
01:08:37of attempts, but some hot starts for them and
01:08:39Gary Trent 40% as well. So this is definitely if
01:08:43anything the first team that can actually shoot
01:08:46with the Celtics a little bit more importantly
01:08:48get up threes at the same rate or similar rate
01:08:51that Boston does. Yeah, it would not shock me if
01:08:55you know that that NBA record of threes made by
01:08:59a team is shattered in this game. I thought they
01:09:01were going. I thought they were going for it
01:09:03tonight when they had 16 early. Yeah, I could
01:09:06easily see one of these two teams making 30 or
01:09:09more threes easily because again, it's part of
01:09:13who they are. It's the way they play. So it'll
01:09:17be interesting to see see how the Celtics fair
01:09:19against the team as you pointed out has similar
01:09:21approach to getting points that the Celtics do.
01:09:25Yeah, and I'm looking forward to this week. It
01:09:27could be a bunch of close games a lot of interesting
01:09:29styles coming up physicality in the Bucks case
01:09:31and a couple stars on the other side. The Pacers
01:09:34obviously gave the Celtics a run in that East
01:09:37Finals and they're going to get them on Wednesday
01:09:39before they head to a high flying fast young
01:09:41Charlotte team on Friday and Saturday next week.
01:09:44So a lot of good games coming up after a couple
01:09:46lackluster opponents this week in Washington
01:09:48Detroit, but the Pistons did put up a fight
01:09:51despite that Owen three record. They push the
01:09:53Celtics down six late in this game and Celtics
01:09:56ended up pulling it out again. If you're here
