00:00:00three pace laps before we get a green flag here at the Cleveland Grand Prix
00:00:04round eight of the PPG IndyCar World Series and once again you get a look at
00:00:09those flags in the background see how the wind is really affecting here the
00:00:13drivers have not been out in the wind it wasn't this blustery this morning so
00:00:18they haven't really found out how that's going to affect them as they go down the
00:00:21backstretch let's take a look at the lineup for round eight of the PPG IndyCar
00:00:26World Series with the full rundown of the grid for you and starting on the
00:00:30pole as we said Al Unser jr. with a new lap record here his third pole of the
00:00:36year alongside him last year's winner Paul Tracy and then starting in the
00:00:40second row Emerson Fittipaldi he had a great race here last year to finish
00:00:43second and alongside him Nigel Mantle they overtook each other seven times in
00:00:47two laps last year on the inside of row three Canadian Jacques Villeneuve his
00:00:51first time here at Cleveland fastest in the warm-up and Robbie Gordon alongside
00:00:56him like I say he should be good in the rain on the inside of row four Mauricio
00:01:01Guzman his first time here and alongside him Stefan Johansson with his best
00:01:05qualifying attempt this year on the inside of row five Arrin Videci Mario on
00:01:10his last year tour and alongside him the Honda power plant of Bobby Rahal on the
00:01:16inside of row six Jimmy Vassa out of Discovery Bay California and Mark Smith
00:01:20out of Oregon alongside him on the inside of row seven from Milan Italy
00:01:25Teo Fabi and from Mexico Adrian Fernandez on the inside of row eight
00:01:30Canadian Scott Goodyear and then the rookie Brian Hurter who had a crash
00:01:34yesterday on the inside of row nine Michael Andretti alongside him Dominic
00:01:38Dobson in the PacWest entry on the inside of row ten of Raul Bosel
00:01:42disappointing in qualifying for him alongside him rookie Scott Sharp on the
00:01:47inside of row 11 is Mike Roth and Dutchman Arie Luyendyk on the inside of
00:01:51row 12 Alessandro Zampedri had a great race in Portland last weekend and Andrea
00:01:55Montemini racing with an injured left foot on the inside of row 13 Hiro
00:02:00Matushida and Marco Greco carries out that row on 14 Willie T Ribbs on the
00:02:05inside Parker Johnston in his Honda entry on the outside on the inside of
00:02:10row 15 Giovanni Lavaghi a rookie and Ross Bentley out of Canada and finally
00:02:15it is Jeff Wood starting from the back on row 16 on his own 85 laps is 2.36
00:02:24miles around this track there are seven right handers and three left handers the
00:02:29crucial overtaking areas will be going into break into turn one under braking
00:02:34and if you remember last year we had a huge pilot there on the start and they
00:02:37had a good disciplinary meeting this morning reminding everybody you got to
00:02:41get through turn one to win this race that's where we'll see mostly overtaking
00:02:44also coming out of turn 8 under power as they shoot down towards the main
00:02:49start straightaway coming out of 8 is going to be a big area for overtaking
00:02:53but that's going to be a case of getting the power down which the Penske as we've
00:02:56seen are able to do that better than anybody else so far this year everybody
00:03:00else is trying to play catch-up as we have I believe one more lap under the
00:03:05yellow behind a pace car we'll go green flag racing two pit stops today for fuel
00:03:10and tires and of course if it rains we'll see them come in and change for
00:03:13the wet tires a lot of these teams do have wet tires along the pit wall at the
00:03:18back of the pits and ready for any rain action they should get
00:03:25now in an alignment position going through the last chicane just before
00:03:30they come to the start finish line we watch for the green green is out though
00:03:34seemed that Allenser jr. got a bit of a start now let's take a look at him
00:03:38spread out wide well maybe they learned a little bit of a lesson from last year
00:03:44now not everybody Michael in trouble Michael wasn't here last year so two
00:03:51cars together on the start Scott Goodyear is one of them Michael Andretti
00:03:55is the other so what I thought was going to happen into the first turn Scott
00:04:04Goodyear back under power as we go back to the race itself and Mansell has made
00:04:11his move and dropped into third place
00:04:17out in the east loop of this track now making the turn along the main grandstand
00:04:25ahead of them is a right then a quick left
00:04:30Allenser jr. Fittipaldi and Mansell and then Tracy
00:04:38only once as a leader of the first lap of this race going on to win it now
00:04:44here's the best place to pass you can see Mansell going right down in there he
00:04:48was feeling out just going to try it pretty soon watch it because it's the
00:04:53easiest place on the track to do the passage string out single file right now
00:04:58but still in hot pursuit is Nigel Mansell who also has much to prove today
00:05:04this time last year he already had a couple of wins under his belt he really
00:05:10wishes he were in that position now Mansell by his standards is having a
00:05:14terrible season winless as you said he had a foray into Formula One a couple
00:05:18weeks ago in the French Grand Prix he ran as high as third but broke down it's
00:05:22not the kind of season which Mansell who thrives on success and the adrenaline it
00:05:27brings is having and has created ongoing speculation about where Mansell will
00:05:32drive next year will it be in the Indy cars or will it be in Formula One the
00:05:36BBC is reporting today that Nigel Mansell will in fact be driving in
00:05:40Formula One next year well Paul I believe that and I believe that you're
00:05:43going to see Michael Andretti in his car next year but I think what you're seeing
00:05:48this year with the Lola cars versus the Penske's which right there the car on
00:05:51the right was Mansell the red and white cars of course of the Penske cars what
00:05:56you're seeing is the Penske cars are more flexible they are racing these
00:05:59cars exactly the same way they qualify them and Mansell for example the Lola
00:06:04cars they have a problem they get them tuned up really good but the cars are
00:06:08almost too finely tuned and they can get out of tune on the chassis just real
00:06:13easy. Scott Goodyear you saw got back underway and now Michael Andretti is
00:06:17underway as well though he continues with a struggling season since that
00:06:22victory at the first race of the season in Australia and for the second time in
00:06:26a row is the slowest of the Renard cars in qualifying here today and then his
00:06:31problem on the start itself one of the reasons that you want to qualify high up
00:06:36you don't want to get caught in a mid-pack incident nothing changes in the
00:06:39top four. You can watch also the vapor coming off the rear wings look at the
00:06:43wings right there the right and the left inside the wing at the vapor in the air
00:06:47it's kind of chilly today we've got a lot of moisture hits the wings and it
00:06:50shows you what the aerodynamics are doing with the cars. This of course is
00:06:55one of the wide runways that I spoke of but they go off this into a right
00:07:00left S bend and that's where it's extremely rough where the runway
00:07:04intersects the taxiway. Watching the rest of the field come through and centering
00:07:09up on Mauricio Guzulmane. You saw Robbie Gordon, Jack Villeneuve and here is
00:07:16Guzulmane who currently runs
00:07:19trying to catch up with a Renard of Villeneuve. Watch the cars bounce. You can
00:07:27also see in this shot how close to the ground they get. The cars actually tip
00:07:31and touch the ground as they go through these turns especially where it's really
00:07:34rough. Mario Andretti on his Arrivederci tour. I'll tell you what every city he
00:07:41goes to there's plenty of folks turning out. His car is just always surrounded.
00:07:45Johansson makes a move to the inside. Shows himself to Andretti. But that's not a
00:07:51corner to pass. The next one is. Johansson in the blue and orange car. Back at the
00:07:58front. Mansell very much on the move now. This is Mansell's strongest show of the year.
00:08:05He was strong here last year. Had a sensational battle with Emerson
00:08:09Fittipaldi. It shows that he obviously has a knack for this place. I think one
00:08:14of the reasons for that, Paul and Bobby, is that he is able to dump the car into
00:08:19the turn and accelerate so hard out of the turn. It's a characteristic of his
00:08:22style. It really suits the way you have to drive this track. Well you know, Sam
00:08:27and Paul, I don't know a driver in this race that doesn't really like the
00:08:31Cleveland track except for that spot right there just on camera. They can make
00:08:36mistakes all over the place and at least they normally don't have crashes from it.
00:08:40But you do get beaten up something bad. You walk up and down pit lane and you see
00:08:44guys wearing, you know, padding on their elbows and band-aids on their hands.
00:08:51Mansell closing on Paul Tracey. It is still Al Unser Jr., Paul Tracey, Nigel
00:08:56Mansell and then Emerson Fittipaldi. We may have suggested that Fittipaldi was
00:09:01in second place when in fact it is Paul Tracey. And Fittipaldi sits back and
00:09:06forth. And this is the battle on the track. These three cars right here.
00:09:12Fittipaldi, waiting station. If you can say that at the kind of speeds the Indy
00:09:18cars turn. Fittipaldi is the most successful of all the drivers
00:09:22historically at this track with his three wins, most laps led. So you know he
00:09:27goes into the race with an extremely confident attitude, if perhaps not quite
00:09:32the speed of Al Unser Jr. and Paul Tracey, his teammates. You know, if you
00:09:36watch the bumps that the cars go around the track here, realize that the driver's
00:09:40seat, their rear ends, are only like an inch and a half from the ground. So when
00:09:44the car touches the ground, which it does, it has skid pads on the front and the
00:09:48back. It really hits the spines. That little Al has been in and out of the
00:09:53doctors all weekend because he's got problems with his spine from all the
00:09:57bumps here. Well Scott Goodyear, as you know, had his problems on the start when
00:10:01in and out of the pits. Jack Arood, you have an update? Well Paul, they checked
00:10:04after he had the problem on the start. Scott Goodyear came in, but on the way
00:10:07out after the mandatory check on the condition of the car, they found nothing
00:10:11wrong, but Goodyear exceeded the 80 mile an hour speed limit. So once again he was
00:10:16brought into pit road that last lap, and he was given what's called a stop and
00:10:20wait penalty. A stop for five seconds, and then he was sent back on his way.
00:10:24Things are not going well for the Budweiser crew. Let's check in with Gary
00:10:27Gerald. Well, Jack, as far as Michael Andretti is concerned, who was involved
00:10:31in that incident on the green flag in turn number one, the crew expected once
00:10:35Michael got restarted that he would come in. They laid out fresh tires over the
00:10:38wall, but Michael stayed on course. So obviously the car has responded okay. He
00:10:44just lost a considerable amount of time. He stays out there now at the back of
00:10:47the pack. Of course, Scott Goodyear this weekend, oh, we see Jimmy Vassar walking
00:10:55back. Second race in a row, he is out very early. Too bad for Jimmy Vassar, the driver of the
00:11:02Conseco STP car. He's really an upcoming driver and really looks good this year at the
00:11:06champs. One thing we should perhaps say about that stop and wait penalty, if you
00:11:11have a stop and go here at Cleveland, you can actually get out on the course and
00:11:15gain position because of the nature of the layout of the pits. So when they
00:11:19bring him in for a stop and go, they'll also hold him some time to make the
00:11:23penalty a valid penalty. Al Unser, Jr., car 31, leads here, followed by his
00:11:29teammate, Paul Tracy, with Nigel Mansell doing everything he can to close in, and
00:11:33the leaders are already encountering the slower traffic. Back at the Grand Prix
00:11:42of Cleveland, presented by Goodyear, as we watch the leader, Al Unser, Jr., he is
00:11:47running a dominant race once again here. In second place is Paul Tracy. Nigel
00:11:52Mansell is third. Emerson Fittipaldi is fourth. Nothing has changed there. Jimmy
00:11:56Vassar is out of the race. Let's go to Gary Gerald.
00:11:59Well, a season that started with such great promise for Jimmy Vassar has taken a
00:12:02nosedive. What was the problem today, Jimmy?
00:12:05Well, just started the race. I don't know what happened. I was early in the race.
00:12:09The engine just cut out, and I looked down the dash, and it said fuel alarm. So
00:12:12something malfunctioned somewhere in the car that just lost power. We started out
00:12:17good this season, and we're hitting a little soft spot now, but it's definitely
00:12:21not a nosedive, Gary. Okay. Well, there's 7 pin points coming in.
00:12:24Disappointed. Next week in Toronto, better fortune.
00:12:26Yeah, we're going to come back. We got a great team here, and, you know, that's
00:12:30racing. So we'll get them next time. Thanks. Paul?
00:12:33I think the good report is there that there is no fire. Probably one of the
00:12:36observers saw some smoke from something that overheats as soon as the car comes
00:12:41to a rest, but at least they don't have a lot of damage to rebuild.
00:12:44Yeah, I just want to remind everybody to look at the bottom of the cars if you
00:12:48want to see what the suspensions go through on these race cars, how rough it
00:12:52is, how short of travel they have to have. Just watch the underneath of cars
00:12:55when you can see the daylight to the point where they look like they're
00:12:58touching. It's interesting to watch this. Also, as you're watching the cars
00:13:02closely, remember that the exciting thing about the season so far has been the
00:13:06superiority of the Penskes, and in particular, what has made the Penskes
00:13:11better? The talk is that it's their traction off the turns, that they get
00:13:15better acceleration off the turn. Watch for that here. Mansell's been unable to
00:13:19match it in qualifying and practice. Now he seems to have traction identical to
00:13:24there. And this track, Sam, seems to emphasize itself on shock absorbers more
00:13:29than any other track. Just watch the underneath of the cars again and imagine
00:13:33it's not so much the body moving as it is the tires. The shock absorbers
00:13:37really catch heck here. For example, numerous Reinhardt cars already this
00:13:42race have broken their shock absorbers. That's how rough this track is, and yet
00:13:46it looks like it's smooth enough for airplanes, which it is. Well, of course,
00:13:50the rival teams would like to think that the Penske cars are somehow cheating in
00:13:54some ways, that they have a traction control device which would be illegal,
00:13:58that would be effective. Chances are that is not true. It's probably a
00:14:02combination, as you mentioned, Bobby, the shocks, the differentials, some
00:14:05suspension, the way they use their tires. But it is tempting if you're a rival of
00:14:10the Penske's to think, boy, they must have some widget, and I wish I had that
00:14:13widget too. Well, they're not doing it, Sam. I was given the job by you and
00:14:17Paul this week to check that out, and I've come to the conclusion that the
00:14:20only way that you can do a traction control is to measure the front tire to
00:14:24the engine or the rear tire to the engine or to each other. These guys have
00:14:28nothing in the car to do that. So, in fact, I'm sure that they're not
00:14:31cheating. They just have good cars this year. You saw Allender Jr. as he had to
00:14:35work his way through traffic. Now the battle between Paul Tracy and Nigel
00:14:39Mansell is suffering the same fate, and traffic could very definitely be a
00:14:44factor, though most of those that they've encountered have been wise
00:14:47enough to look in their mirrors and get out of it right away. Every time
00:14:51they go into that turn one right there, that's where we're really looking for
00:14:54the passing to happen most of the time. But if you'll notice Tracy when he went
00:14:58in there, he's really looking at his right-hand mirror to see if Mansell's
00:15:01going to take a run at him right there. Allender is 4.9 seconds ahead of his
00:15:05teammate, Paul Tracy. You're on board Nigel Mansell now. And just remember,
00:15:10what you're seeing are the driving actions of a man who is the defending
00:15:14national IndyCar champion and the year before that, Formula 1 champion. This
00:15:18man may not be having a great season right this minute, but he's as good as
00:15:22they come, and he really has a wonderfully aggressive style.
00:15:28We'll just watch him right here for the moment as Mansell trying to catch
00:15:32Tracy. Down that long back straightaway. Second fastest place on the track. This
00:15:38is the fastest road course that they run on all year.
00:15:45Lavaget. Something's broken. Looks like a water pipe in the back. A lot of steam
00:15:50coming over the top of that car. That probably means an engine went, Paul, and
00:15:54it got into the water. That's really an expensive type of a break. Unplug your
00:15:58helmet. There you go. This is the car that Buddy Lazear usually drives. He's
00:16:02not missing much today.
00:16:08Back at the front, Al Unser Jr. Nearly five seconds ahead of his nearest rival.
00:16:15Exactly the same pattern that he established at Portland two weeks ago.
00:16:19There's the leader coming through over in the east end. Second place is Paul
00:16:22Tracy and Nigel Mansell right on top of him. You can notice that Nigel is running
00:16:27a little bit tighter line than Tracy is being a little bit conservative. Remember,
00:16:32they both realized very early in the race. Look at the look at all the vapor coming
00:16:37off their wings. They go fast down the straightaway. You see the bumpiness there
00:16:40as we ride with Nigel Mansell whenever they make the right left combinations and go from
00:16:46the runways to the taxiways. That's where the roughness exists out on the runways
00:16:50themselves. It's pretty smooth. You got a glimpse of the top six. Seventh is
00:16:55Mauricio Guzman. Eighth is Mario Andretti. Stefan Johansson is ninth. And Bobby Rahal.
00:17:01This is the first track Rahal ever won on. He currently runs in tenth.
00:17:04And, of course, when he was introduced to the crowd before the start,
00:17:08a terrific ovation. He comes from Ohio. He's really popular here.
00:17:12In fact, folks in the Buckeye State have more than one driver to cheer for here.
00:17:17Brian Hurta goes to Ohio State. In fact, just finished his junior year there.
00:17:22Wouldn't you like to be doing that? Wouldn't you like to have been driving an Indy car and going
00:17:25to college at the same time? What a life. Wouldn't that be a life? The cars, incidentally,
00:17:30also we might watch for during the races. This historically is a bad track for transmission.
00:17:35You can see with all the bumps. You can watch us. We were on board with Nigel Mansell a while ago.
00:17:40All the shifting that goes on. The bumps really affect the transmissions bad.
00:17:44Mario Andretti now challenging Mauricio Guzman. This is a fight for seventh place.
00:17:49Guzman, the 88 cars, they both duck inside. Slower traffic.
00:17:53And Guzman holds Mario Andretti off. Gary Gerald, you have an update on Hurta while we watch this
00:17:58battle? Well, no. Let's hold it just a second. Mario makes his move to the outside. Can he
00:18:03sweep in the corner across the front of Guzman? Remember, too, a battle between different chassis.
00:18:09Guzman now. Mario back on the inside. A beautifully executed pass by Mario.
00:18:14Mario in the Lola. Guzman in the Renard. A car all new for the season this year.
00:18:18And he's got the inside line. Nope. You should not eliminate the fact that
00:18:23Stephon Johansson is sitting just behind him as well. So that's a good tight battle.
00:18:28Gary Gerald, Brian Hurta has rolled to a stop on the front stretch. Can you update us now?
00:18:32Can't tell you what that problem is. It's just the culmination of a horrendous weekend. Contact
00:18:36with Lovaggio in yesterday's practice session. Had to go to the backup car to qualify. Then
00:18:41this morning, a motor problem. Had to change engines. They started the race with radio
00:18:46problems. Now here's a new complication. This has been a real tough couple of days
00:18:50for one of the local favorites. You saw in that fight, too, that Johansson also got his
00:18:56way around Guzman. So that puts Mario up a position into seventh and Johansson into eighth
00:19:03and Guzman drops back to ninth. And just behind him now is Bobby Ray Hall. As you can see,
00:19:08I'm trying to push Brian Hurta's car over to the edge of the course and get it out of harm's way.
00:19:14So at the top of the order with a five-second lead is Allenser Jr.
00:19:18His teammate Paul Tracy is in second place. In third is Nigel Mansell.
00:19:27And the battle with Mario Andretti and the rest has broken off for the moment.
00:19:39We're back at the Burke lake front airport. The grand prix of Cleveland presented by Goodyear
00:19:43and we have a change in position. Well, Allenser Jr. Is still a full five seconds
00:19:48out in front of second place. The new second place, as you see there, is Nigel Mansell.
00:19:54Paul Tracy has been pushed back to third. Mansell was able to get around using the traffic.
00:19:59And there is Dominic Dotson who spun in the first turn. So the yellow flags are out at the start
00:20:04finish line. Let's take a look at the pass again. Here's Nigel setting himself up on Tracy. Slower
00:20:09cars just ahead. Now, you can watch. Nigel captured him, pushed him over, used the traffic
00:20:17to hold Tracy in, got right by, as you can see there, the white number one. Nigel Mansell,
00:20:22hard way to pass, but he got it done. Nigel Mansell now sits in second place. And Tracy
00:20:28has the obligation to catch up. Fittipaldi continues to wait station in third. Robbie
00:20:32Gordon sits back. Fittipaldi is right station in fourth. And Robbie Gordon sits back in fifth.
00:20:38You notice Tracy has fallen back just a little bit, Paul. That's because the air, the track here
00:20:42is so fast that the aerodynamics mess up the wings behind in the guy behind. The problem Nigel's
00:20:48having before Tracy is having now. Almost like on an oval. And if you wonder why Penske is having
00:20:54such a great year, remember that his drivers from last year, Fittipaldi and Tracy, are currently
00:21:00running third and fourth. Nigel Mansell would be leading this race were not for Al Unser Jr.
00:21:05Penske's acquisition for this year. Al Unser, in my view, a man who combines the speed of Tracy
00:21:11and the experience of Fittipaldi. And you see him way out front defending the
00:21:15Penske honors right now. All right, let's go pit side.
00:21:20I was going to go down to Jack Arood for the moment, but we'll continue watching
00:21:25Nigel Mansell as he tries to close the gap, which has grown with Al Unser Jr. Now at seven and a
00:21:31half seconds. He carries the number one, the sign of the defending champion. But Bobby Unser,
00:21:38their teams, that even if they win the championship, won't put number one on the card,
00:21:42because some view it as very poor luck. You're one that could view it that way.
00:21:46Well, lots of times when guys have number one, they go right backwards the next year. There's
00:21:52little Al trying to get through the traffic. Boy, it's getting low. Now, that's what he's got to
00:21:56worry about an awful lot today, is the guys working each other really hard and him trying
00:22:01to laugh him at the same time. But back on that number one right there, you see Nigel Mansell.
00:22:06Last year, he won many races, had just a super year. This year, he has number one on the car.
00:22:11It seems like everything's gone wrong, and it's been that way for a lot of the drivers
00:22:15over history. All right, let's go to the pits now, and Jack.
00:22:19Robby Gordon, a tough break. Passing under a yellow condition in a corner has been issued
00:22:23a stop and wait penalty. Five seconds are up. Gordon is away, and he lights the tires up.
00:22:28He is not at all happy with the penalty. Robby Gordon suffers with that one. That'll
00:22:33take him down through the field. Nobody ever likes the penalties here at any rate.
00:22:38He just gathered that up. Gordon has had three spins during practice and qualifying. He almost
00:22:43added a fourth there. We've been riding on board with this man for two days, and it has been a
00:22:48heart-stopping, thrilling experience, as you just saw. Sam, if I had to analyze the whole weekend,
00:22:53we've watched him spinning out so many times. I think he's got a shock problem. The car seems to
00:22:58hold really well, and all of a sudden, he hits some sort of a bump. The rear wheels jump right
00:23:03out from under it, and he spins out. But this is a good racetrack because you don't normally
00:23:07hit anything when you spin out. The penalty cost him dearly. He fell down to 17th place
00:23:13just with that little five-second stop and wait penalty. Gordon is staying very close together.
00:23:19Gordon, after his bad start at Australia, finished 23rd down there. He's finished 7th, 3rd, 5th,
00:23:246th, 3rd, and 4th. Actually, he is having a terrific season, and he's one of the few people
00:23:29to pierce the Penske armor. He's been up there on the winner's podium in third place a couple
00:23:35of times. For example, on the shock absorbers, looking right there, Robby Gordon in the right
00:23:40hand, the Cummins car there. You know what would happen if your shock absorber is just a little bit
00:23:46too tight on the rebound? It'll literally jerk the rear tires right off the ground, or the front
00:23:51tire as far as that goes. But the rear tires are really the biggest problem. As far as cars spinning
00:23:56out, that's often the problem. Well, you know, Robby is an off-road specialist, where the shock
00:24:00absorber travel can be, what, 18 inches, 2 feet sometimes in those big pickups. So it's surprising
00:24:06that he's having trouble with that aspect of the car. He just about lost it again right there in
00:24:10that turn we just saw. The car took a big, rough, hard step. Here's the onboard electronics. That'll
00:24:16show you what he's doing. Now, Ford Electronics giving us the gear changes, not the braking,
00:24:20mile per hour and RPM. He's not turning it, Paul, as tight as we normally see them turn,
00:24:26especially the Ford Cosworth engine. They normally turn up around 13, 13.4. I don't know why they're
00:24:32doing that here, except that maybe their fuel mileage isn't quite as good as they want to be.
00:24:36This is a fast track. RPM is up a lot of the way around the track. We pass over the 25th lap
00:24:43of the 85-lap scheduled distance here, and already the pit stops have begun.
00:24:48None of the leaders yet. Mario Andretti was in and out of the pits, routine.
00:24:55And there's the leader, Al Unser Jr., again dealing with traffic,
00:24:59but still with almost a five-second lead, as here comes Nigel Mansell in, Jack.
00:25:03This is Mark. Nigel Mansell hits his marks. The jacks go up. A very methodical stop for
00:25:11Newman Haas Racing. Not wanting to make a mistake, they're going to change all four tires,
00:25:15as is the norm. They do check the radiators, but taking an inordinate amount of time getting the
00:25:20fuel in. 14.2 seconds, believe it or not, gentlemen, is a slow stop nowadays.
00:25:26Boy, did you like that burnout as it came out, though? During practice, there was this great
00:25:30battle between the Newman Haas team and the Penske team, both of them lighting the tires
00:25:36and just roaring out of the pits with smoke pouring off of the tires. A little bit of an
00:25:41argument to show whether or not they had traction control, because the presumption is, if they did,
00:25:46they wouldn't be able to do that, and both teams were doing it. That's a good way to look at it,
00:25:49Paul. In fact, that's the best analogy I've heard of it. It will not do that with traction control,
00:25:55and they have no switches in the cars to turn it on or turn it off. Let's say there are no
00:26:00switches that anybody can find. Let's take a look at it. He comes out of the pits here
00:26:04and lights them up. Another good way to get the rear is hot, also a good way to get the car
00:26:08sideways. Gee, you'd think we were at an NHRA. You know, ironically, it's easier on the drive
00:26:15train, the axles, the transmissions, if they bust them loose like that than back a few years when
00:26:20they tried to get out without busting loose, because when they slip that bad, there's nothing
00:26:24really binding that hard. Back to the pits, a report from Gary Gerald. On the pit wall, Bobby
00:26:31Rahal, was it a motor problem, Bobby? Yeah, just lost all its oil pressure and started to vibrate
00:26:37too bad. The car was handling beautifully, and we were just sort of able to hang on to the lead
00:26:42guys, but, you know, sometimes you'll get this. I understand there may be a new version available
00:26:48by Michigan. Well, we're even maybe hoping earlier than that. You know, my feeling is
00:26:54we've got to go for it, no matter what, and, you know, just disappointed today. Thanks, Bobby.
00:26:58We've got to go. Pit stops, Jackaroo. And Gary Aluncer, Jr. is the first of the team Penske
00:27:04cars to come in. His teammate, Paul Tracy, now will dart directly in front of him. Now, they're
00:27:09not going to make any changes on Al, Jr.'s car. Their work is almost completed. In the interim,
00:27:15as Aluncer, Jr. goes out, Paul Tracy will take a wing adjustment on the front wing.
00:27:21Watch for a twist, maybe a slight turn. There it is. They've completed their work.
00:27:26They'll go out of the way now. We also received word, Paul, that Mario Andretti is the next guy
00:27:31to get a speeding ticket on Pit Road. He's being called back in for exceeding the 80 mile an hour
00:27:36speed limit. Well, you know, one of the things that's happening on that, Paul, is Andretti,
00:27:40for example, is at the far end of the pit, and those guys think down there, and they have been
00:27:45during practice, immune from the radar detector that tells their speed. Oh, they think they're
00:27:50beyond it. Well, they think they're beyond it. That's what they've been doing, and they were
00:27:53getting by with it in practice, and I have a hunch that Cart was able to catch up and catch
00:27:58him doing this. So little Al in, Paul Tracy in, Nigel in, Emerson Fittipaldi picks up the lead
00:28:03of the race, but he comes in as well, and Gary Gerald waits for him. We watch over the wall. Now
00:28:10we see the nose of the car. He's coming in hot, Paul. Doesn't have to lock it up. He hits the
00:28:15spot, and that is so important because of the length of the fuel hose. Of course,
00:28:21watching and listening now with the crew. No changes as far as wing setups on the front of
00:28:27the car. The Penske machine is off in 15.2 seconds, and you talk about lighting the tires.
00:28:34It's going ammo again. The traction control question, at least there, has been answered.
00:28:39Yeah, that's for sure. And again, these cars here don't have complete lock. We're in. That's where
00:28:44the left rear tire in the right rear tire turned the same speed as they do on an oval here. They
00:28:49run limited slips in the rear end, so that's reading. You see the cars a little bit sneakier
00:28:54coming out of the fifth than you do on an oval track. You know, Bobby, one surprise that I had
00:28:58here this weekend is several people asked me about the power of the Mercedes engine in these cars.
00:29:04The word doesn't seem to have totally gotten out among all race fans that the Mercedes engine
00:29:09was good only at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and they are back to running the Elmore. Yes,
00:29:13they're absolutely running. What is determined is to be the stock Elmore. In other words,
00:29:17the standard engine that anybody can buy the Mercedes engine. Unfortunately, we'd all like
00:29:23to see the rest of the year, but it's out of the business, at least until Indianapolis next year.
00:29:28So for the leader, Alan's her junior who reassumes the lead. 30 laps are now complete.
00:29:33The first round of pit stops is also finished. 85 laps of scheduled distance here. 201.37 miles
00:29:40in the Budweiser Grand Prix of Cleveland presented by Goodyear. And Alan's her juniors
00:29:45showing his incredible power of both himself and this remarkable Nigel Bennett chassis.
00:29:52What a great design it's been. Keep in mind one thing. Little Al right there in the 31 car
00:29:57has back problems. His back is really hurting him. All of these bumps. Look what the car's
00:30:01going through there. It's really bothering his back a lot. And of course, from my standpoint,
00:30:07I hope it doesn't bother him during the race. Paul, you mentioned Nigel Bennett, the designer
00:30:11of the Penske cars, had a wonderful talk with him the other day. I congratulated him on the
00:30:14success of the season. He quickly said, Remember, the season's just half over. There's a lot left
00:30:19to go. And I said, Well, why are the cars so much better than they were last year? First of all,
00:30:23they're only a little bit better. But my design philosophy is each year to eliminate another
00:30:29mistake that I made the year before. Try to make fewer and fewer mistakes. And really, in a sense,
00:30:34with this year's car, it seems that he's made really almost no mistake. Although in his mind,
00:30:39I'm sure there's some shortcomings that he'll improve next year. How perfect and how methodical
00:30:43Al Anser Jr. An eight second lead over the second place Nigel Mansell, followed by Fittipaldi,
00:30:49Tracy and Alessandro Zampadri is moving up into the top of the order as well.
00:30:57Overhead, the Berkeley Front Airport floats one of America's most enduring corporate symbols,
00:31:01the Goodyear blimp here today to help us with coverage of the Cleveland Grand Prix presented
00:31:06by Goodyear. There she is in a gray sky and looking down on Mario Andretti, who took a
00:31:12sudden and quick spin actually over on the straightaway and then drove the car across
00:31:16the track and climbed out with damage to the left front. We'll have to find out
00:31:21what caused the spin. It seems like it was contact with something or somebody. Well,
00:31:26obviously, his left front bent really bad suspension is Paul, so he had to have contact
00:31:31with somebody. It would be my guess, especially the way fit Emerson Fittipaldi now closing on
00:31:37Nigel Mansell and has him in his sights. That's Mark Smith, who had a great qualification effort
00:31:41here today just between them. Fittipaldi looking for a position alongside Smith.
00:31:51He's got him, and now he is in contact with Nigel Mansell in the battle for second place.
00:31:56Remember both Nigel Mansell and Emerson Fittipaldi, former world champions, but belonging
00:32:08to a different era in Formula one more than 10 years apart, their championship now racing
00:32:14almost wheel to wheel here in Cleveland. The one thing that Nigel wants to do like right now,
00:32:19if Emil breathing down his back like that, he wants to have just enough gap for these guys in
00:32:25front of him. Don't interfere with getting caught. In other words, that's how he was able to pass a
00:32:31little while ago, and he doesn't want to get caught in that. Look at all this traffic coming
00:32:35up. This is where things really change. Almost pressing hard to try to catch Nigel in a bad
00:32:40position right now. It says something about Nigel's motivation. Bobby, don't you think that
00:32:46even his talk seeps out through the press that he probably won't be doing any car racing next year?
00:32:51He's still fully motivated to succeed wherever possible in the remaining races.
00:32:56There's no question about that. You know, and when you consider how good everyone says the
00:33:02Penske chassis is, look at the drive that Nigel's been involved in to keep the Lola configuration
00:33:10in a constant form of competition with the Penske. It's either he or Gordon that's always
00:33:14running at the front. Now he's got some serious concerns on slower traffic in front.
00:33:19I still think that the Lola chassis has to be too fine, too,
00:33:23in order to stay where it's running right now.
00:33:32We've got a battle going here. Nigel Mansell being charged. While we watch this, let's try
00:33:39and get an update on Mario Andretti's situation, Jack. Well, Paul, for the last time in his driving
00:33:44career, Mario Andretti has come out of the cockpit in Cleveland. What broke on the car, Mario?
00:33:50Nothing broke. Well, it broke after I got hit. Car number one just miscued there a little bit,
00:33:58and it hit me on the left front and it broke the wishbone.
00:34:04A tough break, but looking at the track conditions the way they are,
00:34:08what is your assessment of the change in the weather? How has it affected the cars?
00:34:13Oh, everything for the better. I think everybody's going quicker. The times that we're
00:34:17running out there are almost qualifying times, so the tires and everything are just taking a
00:34:23big breather today. A teammate of yours, Nigel Mansell, you say is the one that hit you.
00:34:28What do you say to him? I'm sure he didn't want to do it, but could have been more careful, too.
00:34:34Paul? I got shrunk by his own teammate, buddy. Well, I think it kind of shows you one thing,
00:34:40that teammates don't plan races out and teams don't tell who who's going to do what during the
00:34:45race. I think that's kind of the proof of the pudding right there. Nigel Mansell now becomes
00:34:51a question mark on the line, sitting currently scored in second place, but if that damage
00:34:56happened to Mario's car, what kind of damage might Nigel have? Well, not really probably going to
00:35:02have any damage because the rear is much stronger than the front. You can just see the mass in the
00:35:06rear compared to the front, and Mario said that Nigel hit his rear on Mario's front. Mario's the
00:35:12one that went away. Nigel's rear obviously is okay because he's still flying. All right, but let me
00:35:17ask you something else. This track is rough. You've already said that. Physically rough.
00:35:22There's a lot of travel in the suspension here. In the past, it has damaged half shafts
00:35:29and constant velocity joints in the rear suspension. Could this extra blow make a
00:35:33difference? Not really to that, Paul, because the bumps are going to get the transmission
00:35:38and the drive shafts, the CV joints, as you mentioned, but it's really not going to get
00:35:42the suspension as much as you might think. Boy, Nigel's really got his work cut out for him.
00:35:46That's Michael Andretti in the red car right ahead of him right now. Teo Fabi in the yellow car,
00:35:52one step up. He's got to get by both these men who are extremely aggressive and are having their own
00:35:57battle before he can be sure that he's safely in front of Emerson Fittipaldi. Of course, he's
00:36:02dogging it, and that's one thing they don't like to do. Those guys in the front that are having
00:36:07their own battle don't like to be bothered by somebody that's going faster than them.
00:36:12Yeah, exactly. A lot of pride at stake. All right, as we watch this battle,
00:36:19which is broken off for the moment, it gives us a chance to take a look at the confrontation
00:36:23between Mario and Nigel Mansell. And that's the bump right there. So Nigel's first reaction was
00:36:36anger. He thought Mario pulled in on him, which I don't think was the case. But you can see how
00:36:42totally unintentional it was. Yeah, that was that. Boy, there was a closure right there. Well,
00:36:48this is a decisive moment, because remember, you talked about Michael Andretti here in the red car
00:36:53on the right, taking over the seat next year on Newman Haas from Mansell. So there's a lot at stake
00:36:58right here. As Nigel moves under inside Michael. Boy, look at Michael. He's coming right back at
00:37:06him. This is the great racing for which Cleveland is famous. Remember the battle between Emerson
00:37:10Fittipaldi and Nigel last year? On board Michael. That's Nigel just ahead. Emerson's about eight
00:37:16inches behind. Michael's going to try to keep up with Nigel, but I promise you, he's not in the
00:37:22same class. That car has not been as fast as Nigel, although you could see the killer instincts
00:37:27in Michael. Soon as he got past, boy, he really started going for it. Well, Nigel, of course,
00:37:32is lapping Michael, so that's decisive as to the difference in speed of the cars. Notice the
00:37:39notice that roughness as they go through those S pens, though.
00:37:42Lap after lap after lap. If you're at the wheel, you're really taking a beating. You know, Sam,
00:37:46that could be very well. What's wrong with Michael? His speed has not been good for the
00:37:50whole weekend, and it just could be that he just can't seem to get that Renard chassis working
00:37:56through the bumps. If you can't work in the bumps here, you might as well just know you're
00:38:00gonna have problems all day. The Burke Lakefront Airport for all weekends in the year except this,
00:38:05it is that, the General Aviation Airport. But today, it's a race course for the Indy cars,
00:38:102.3 miles around 10 turns. 40 laps are now complete, and Allender Jr. Is 18 seconds out
00:38:17in front. We'll be back. We're past the halfway point now. 44 laps are complete,
00:38:36and we'll take a look at how he got here.
00:38:39This is Dominic Dominic Dobson, and that's the second time he's fun. But this is in a
00:38:44different place. This normally is a real bad place to spend normally to hit that wall out there and
00:38:50race cars get all broken up. He's funded awfully early, so he might have had a little help getting
00:38:55somebody pinching him down or something. Rare to see him. It's been that early in the turn.
00:39:00Tell you what I would prefer that I were not sitting there. If I were Dominic Dobson,
00:39:05I would prefer that I were not sitting there. If I were Dominic Dobson,
00:39:08let's go to the pits once again. And Gary Paul, we need to update the ongoing woes
00:39:12for Robbie Gordon. Remember, he started with such promise in the third row,
00:39:16had that stop and wait penalty. Then they came in with a punctured right rear and had
00:39:21problems with the axle that cost them an inordinate amount of time. Slipped to 25th
00:39:26in the lineup. Now back up to 21st. Been a tough afternoon for Derek Walker's team thus far.
00:39:31Let's go to Jack. Well, Paul, as we show you a shot, you can see the speed limit sign
00:39:36for Pit Road. You see the man in blue next to him? That is the man with the radar gun
00:39:42that determines whether you violate the speed limit or not. We're in Jacques Villeneuve's pit.
00:39:47We'll show you where the speed limit stops. At the end of his pit right here, there's an
00:39:53additional, oh, maybe almost a quarter of a mile of Pit Road where the drivers are allowed to
00:39:58accelerate as fast as they care to. But it's the man in blue that'll get you if you go over 85
00:40:05miles an hour on Pit Road. What happened to Mario Andretti and to Robbie Gordon? Yeah, but, Jack,
00:40:09hold on a second. How far down is Mario's pit? Mario's pit, believe it or not, is only two pits
00:40:15away from the man in blue. Ought to tell you something about the acceleration of these Indy
00:40:19cars. Exactly my point. Up to 80 miles an hour and what, about 45 feet? Well, they could have
00:40:24got him coming in, too, for both of you guys. Mario was obviously speeding, but it could have
00:40:29been coming in as well as going out. We see a battle here between Raul Bosel in the yellow car
00:40:35and Ari Leyendijk in the blue car there with the little red nose on it. Now, what's interesting
00:40:41about this, if you've been following the World Cup, Raul is a Brazilian. Ari, of course, is from
00:40:46the Netherlands, and Brazil beat the Netherlands yesterday in one of the exciting matches of the
00:40:51year. Three to two. It's kind of being rematched again here out on the racetrack. You don't think
00:40:58they're carrying that soccer right to Burke Lakefront, do you, Sam? Well, maybe thoughts of
00:41:02it. Anyway, they're both big fans. This is a battle for ninth. That's Willie T. Ribs and Ari
00:41:07Leyendijk is just moving around. Leyendijk's having a great day. He started 22nd, so he's
00:41:13chopped his way up through the field very efficiently. Well, you saw his car take a big
00:41:17wiggle, the blue and white car of Leyendijk. You have to watch him close, because in some of these
00:41:22turns, you watch a guy get really sideways and quiver right back straight, almost before you
00:41:27can see it if you're not looking close. Willie T. Ribs, while he is in the shot, is not in the fight.
00:41:31He runs 17th, a lap behind Leyendijk and Bosel. A lot of conversation here this week about Raul
00:41:38Bosel and what his future may be, Bobby. Were you in on any of that? No, I really wasn't, but he's
00:41:43one heck of a good driver, and he's with the Dick Simon team. That's really been a pretty good team,
00:41:48and they put a lot of their emphasis into that car, which is not a rental car. That's one of
00:41:52their race cars. Well, of course, the issue, Bobby, was whether he would be staying with the team.
00:41:56Apparently, in Brazil, newspapers reports had him fired from the team. I think the genesis of all
00:42:02that was back when Nigel Mansell was talking, flirting with Formula One, maybe going to leave
00:42:07the Newman Haas team. Haas thought he might need another driver for the second half of this season,
00:42:11and one of the people he approached was Bosel. Bosel said, yeah, I'd consider that if that ride
00:42:17was offered to me. Because of that, Dick Simon, his car owner, then sort of said, well, maybe,
00:42:23you know, I'm not going to have Raul Bosel for the rest of the year. Now, apparently,
00:42:27it's all been patched up. I mean, it was a wobbly moment for both Simon and Bosel,
00:42:32but they're back together again. Mo Nunn has been fired from the team, their engineer,
00:42:37but Simon and Bosel are still together. Well, Sam, I don't think that Bosel is going to be
00:42:42leaving that team would be my guess, and I think Carl Haas is looking at some other drivers. But
00:42:46if I was Bosel, I would definitely try to get it. Yep. Raul, who started 19th up in that fight with
00:42:52Lyondyke as we watched the 40 car of Scott Goodyear. Remember, he had his problems on the
00:42:57start of the race and now is trying to get back in the fight as well, but still well down in the
00:43:04running order. Here's a boy that hasn't really had an awful lot of luck this year. Things in
00:43:09that team are really not clicking. That's one of the here's the telemetry we had. Now, look at the
00:43:13R. P. M. On the middle deal there. He was on up to 12. A little bit better. 12,000 there to see
00:43:19if they have the same concept. There's about a 12 for about a 13,000 there. Yeah, he's pushing
00:43:25it pretty hard. Telco telemetry here gives us something a little different with the lateral
00:43:29G's. Now, remember, Scott Goodyear used to be a race driving instructor. In fact,
00:43:34one of the students was called Tracy, and he'd look at something like this lateral G's,
00:43:41which tells him how much energy he is really throwing left and right as he goes through these
00:43:45corners. And on the right hand side, you can see the throttle up to 100%. That means it's wide
00:43:50open. You can see Scott is not using as much trial as he'd like to be. This, of course,
00:43:56with that yellow is clear to the top on the right hand side. That's what makes the car go
00:43:59faster around. Well, Goodyear's sixth Cleveland start and best finish here has been 10th.
00:44:04Electronics are revolutionizing this sport, and as they take their form in telemetry,
00:44:09it means that every move the driver makes out on the course can be analyzed both by himself and by
00:44:15his engineers. It means you really have big brother looking over your shoulder. When you drive now,
00:44:21Hey, I'm going into that turn flat out, and they look at the like the telemetry afterwards and say,
00:44:26No, you're not. Well, you're not. You used to be able to fit in your days, didn't you? Yes,
00:44:32you could. Right now. Today they just look on the sheets. Hey, boy, this doesn't agree with you.
00:44:36Bobby, of course, never did. Al Unser Jr runs in the lead. Nigel Mansell still in second place
00:44:43as we continue to watch the fight here in Cleveland, Ohio. We'll be back after this message.
00:44:55Back at the Burke Lakefront Airport here in Cleveland as we watch Nigel Mansell continuing
00:45:00to try to catch the extremely elusive Al Unser Jr, who runs in the lead by 17 seconds,
00:45:07not even in view of Nigel. He knows he's out there, but he can't catch him. You know, Paul,
00:45:12one thing I've noticed about Nigel, we have an on-board camera watching from the other cameras.
00:45:16He's trying harder today than I've seen him try in a long time, and he's been taking a lot more
00:45:21chances, bumping people, really trying hard. So that tells you how much advantage the Penske car
00:45:27has a little Al. Well, of course, one of the things is with Emerson Fittipaldi right behind
00:45:31Nigel. He has plenty of inspiration for going hard and particularly for making difficult passes,
00:45:36and he's going to have to make two tough ones with Boesel and Guzman right ahead of him on
00:45:41the road right now. Now, neither one of those are going to give way because they're in a battle
00:45:45by themselves. And the other fear, of course, that Fittipaldi... He just wasted time there.
00:45:51Wasted a great deal. Fittipaldi's problem's going to be that if Nigel gets past one of them,
00:45:55they may see Nigel, but they may not see Fittipaldi, so he's going to have to tiptoe.
00:45:59It took Fittipaldi this whole time to reel Nigel in after Nigel made that good pass on Michael
00:46:04Andretti and another one on Tao Fabi. We saw that about 10 minutes ago, and it's taken that long
00:46:10for Emerson to reel him back in again. That's how important the passing is.
00:46:13And I know there's a lot of talk about Nigel leaving the IndyCars. I hope that doesn't come
00:46:17to pass. It has been a real joy watching him, watching him here today at this track a year
00:46:23ago when he and Fittipaldi went side by side, lap after lap, not giving any place on the course,
00:46:29literally side by side through every corner. And if you leave it up to Emo, it's going to
00:46:33happen again because Emo's really... Look at Emo, how hard he's working on him, using
00:46:37every bit of drafting he can do, using every bit of advantage, trying to capture
00:46:43Nigel with the traffic. I mean, Emo's working as hard as you've ever seen him work.
00:46:47Meantime, though, Aluncer Jr. is pulling away, and one of the discouraging things for
00:46:52the opposition of Aluncer Jr. is that he starts fast, and he actually gets faster relative to
00:47:00the opposition as his tanks lighten. He was 17 seconds ahead a few laps ago. He's now up to 20
00:47:06seconds ahead. And that is that fight for eighth and ninth. Guzman and Boycell sitting just in
00:47:11front of them. Pit stops are due within a couple of laps here, so the pressure will be on the crew
00:47:18of this man. Now, if you want to talk team racing, this is when you see it the most. There's nothing
00:47:24he can do while he sits in the pits, but what can happen is they can lose precious time and
00:47:30distance on the race course if they take too long with the pit stops. So the Penske team,
00:47:35one of the best in the business at it, anticipating the stop of Aluncer Jr. here within a lap or two.
00:47:40Well, you know, you speak of the quality pit work of the Penske team, and, you know, we've been
00:47:44talking about this almost as long as modern motor racing has existed. The Penske pit stop, it's
00:47:49alliterative, and you think, my gosh, they are the best. One of the reasons for that, I think,
00:47:53is the continuity in that team. Their mechanics stay with them year after year after year.
00:47:59A tradition is built up, and it's maintained. As I watch little Al going around the corners,
00:48:03I see his tires literally coming off of the ground. On board with Nigel, but he may have
00:48:09more problems than we think. He brushed the wall earlier. This is a lap earlier. Keep an eye on
00:48:16number one there. Oh, look at that. That's why rear tire only. That was fire was a magnesium.
00:48:23The wheels made out of magnesium. And the leader, Aluncer Jr. is in the pits. Let's go to Jack.
00:48:30Well, Paul, direct your attention to the front of the car, the wing area. The word we've received
00:48:36is that Aluncer Jr. Has requested a wing adjustment. After they complete their work,
00:48:41we'll look to see if they give him it. Looks as if they won't. They may have thought better of it.
00:48:47Stay with what you've got. In 13.7 seconds, a nominal normal pit stop for team Penske once
00:48:53again. I'm not so sure I'd want to change something working that good. Nigel, of course,
00:48:58has now had contact with Mario with his right rear wheel and with a wall with his left rear
00:49:05wheel. That's both variants. You want to be driving that car? Maybe it's back in line now.
00:49:13So Aluncer Jr., the leader, makes his second stop that gives the lead over to Nigel Mansell.
00:49:18But, of course, he is due in very shortly, as is Emerson Fittipaldi,
00:49:23Paul Tracy and the rest of the front of the order. Now, the one you saw with Nigel
00:49:26going out and hitting the wall with his left rear, I promise you, that could hurt something
00:49:31a little bit. When you saw all that magnesium flare up, it takes some pressure to do that.
00:49:36But if it's only in the wheel, then this pit stop should cure the problem, right?
00:49:40Yes, and they'll change that for sure, Paul, and it definitely hurts the wheel for sure.
00:49:44Well, you're just in front of that wheel that is the question mark. Gary Gerald is
00:49:47waiting while the Newman Haas team is ready to do some repairs. Maybe they can
00:49:52button the camera down a little bit, too. They warned him of speed as he came down pit road.
00:49:58No problems. We can see where the left rear brushed the wall. Actually, they call it white
00:50:03walling the tire. Mansell, who ran in Formula 1 in France last week, said it was smooth as a
00:50:07billiard table. He said when he came to Cleveland, it was a real shock to the system. But in 14
00:50:12seconds, he's back out and no apparent damage to any of the suspension. And I hope careful about
00:50:18the speed limit. His teammates suffered from that earlier, Jack. Well, Paul Tracy gets out
00:50:23and away as well. They made a wing adjustment on his car. He does not exceed the speed limit,
00:50:28at least according to the one that was posted. The only member of Team Penske left the pit.
00:50:32Michael Andretti down inside of Paul Tracy, Jack. One of the things, Sam, that happens,
00:50:38you know, there is a right-hand turn as you exit pit road. You are literally high up on the throttle
00:50:44and you find yourself weaving right into turn number two. So it gets a little dicey coming out
00:50:49of the pits. Well, exactly, Jack. We just saw some of the better racing of the day right there at
00:50:53that turn you described. Emerson Fittipaldi in now, Jack Arood. And Emerson Fittipaldi looking
00:50:58to make up time. The crew goes to work. We'll see if they make any adjustments on the machine or not.
00:51:05It looks as if it's going to be only tires required in the team. They check the radiators
00:51:09for debris, taking on a full load of fuel. They drop the jacks, and Emerson is away in 14.7
00:51:16seconds. And he almost has a problem going out of pit road as he found traffic overcoming him
00:51:21on driver's right. That was Guzman who came out along with Fittipaldi. And, of course,
00:51:26Al Unser Jr. Will move back into the lead of the race. And Nigel Mansell and Fittipaldi will come
00:51:31out side by side in a battle for position. There's Emerson right in front of Nigel now.
00:51:37And maybe this is Nigel's best moment to get by him right there under braking. Now, they didn't
00:51:42see that coming. Nigel was not expecting that. That was a total surprise to him. But, boy,
00:51:47did he react at the next turn. Isn't it amazing, given the number of variables in a pit stop,
00:51:51pulling in, getting the car stopped, having it all happen to your car, and then getting back out,
00:51:56that they resume exactly the way they left off. Look as they come out now. Of course, Nigel is on
00:52:02a little warmer tire, so it's sticking a little bit better. First he gets past, and then he comes
00:52:08right back and takes over the position. And you notice how quickly Emo moved over into an
00:52:13aggressive position where Nigel had to go around him. Emo did a good job there. They both did.
00:52:18So, Nigel Mansell, in a battle with Fittipaldi, is back into second place.
00:52:22The leader is Al Unser Jr., and we are having a great time in Cleveland.
00:52:2762 laps of 85 complete. Al Unser Jr. Is still the leader as we look at beautiful downtown
00:52:36Cleveland. Boy, I'll tell you what, we've had a great time in this city, and all that smoke
00:52:40belongs to R.E. Lyondyke, who rolled to a stop with what looks to be a turbocharger fire. No
00:52:46danger to the driver here on the front stretch. I'll tell you what, there is no such thing as a
00:52:51bad seat in the house here. Everybody gets to see everything. Yeah, the whole racetrack is like that.
00:52:55R.E.'s fire, incidentally, is a turbocharger, like you said, Paul. It is from an engine
00:53:00blowing, obviously. The oil gets in the turbocharger. There's really no fire left,
00:53:05but you can see it coming out of the pipe of the turbocharger, not really hurting anything
00:53:09right there. It's just the oil from the engine that got up in there. Too bad. R.E. and his group,
00:53:14Regency Racing, were having a fairly good day moving into the top ten and very definitely in
00:53:19the fight. I think it would have been a lot safer, of course, for the truck out there to
00:53:23pull that car off into the grass right there. That's a place where the cars come out of the
00:53:28turns, get really wide, go right in the group where he is. R.E., of course, wants to run across
00:53:33the straightaway because it's the shortest distance to the pits. And the IndyCar safety
00:53:37people said, No, I don't think so. Fifth place car. He's really, really one aggressive driver.
00:53:46The guy in the blue and white car, the player's car there. He's the most aggressive young man I
00:53:51have seen in years. And easily, wouldn't you say, Bobby, the discovery of the season? I think he's
00:53:58the discovery of many seasons that we've had. He's really, really good. He's leading in the
00:54:04Rookie of the Year points, leading Scott Sharp, who's also having a good season. But nothing as
00:54:10spectacular as this young man in the field right now, looking very solid. Just ahead of him is
00:54:17Willie T. Ribbs, a service merchandise car. Willie is always good for a quote, and I asked
00:54:23him yesterday what it was like to drive around this track. He said it's as bad as a rough night
00:54:27in Harlem. Well, there's a good race driver in the Trans Am. Boy, Willie T. was untouchable for a
00:54:34long time. Not done quite as well with the IndyCar. He's had a lot of different rides.
00:54:38There you see Villanova trying to get by Willie T. But he's going to catch on one of these days.
00:54:44And what he does, he's going to be as tough here as he has been the Trans Am cars. Do you think,
00:54:48and in the case of Willie T., that as his teammate Robbie Gordon comes past, trying to get his way
00:54:54back up through the field again, that all of that time in Trans Am cars may have hindered him,
00:54:59may have taught him techniques and styles that he's having trouble shaking now that don't apply
00:55:04to the IndyCars? I totally agree with you, Paul. One hundred percent. I think it's created bad
00:55:08habits for him, and I think he just stayed there a little bit too long. But I also know this.
00:55:13People, human beings, are capable of changing. One of these days, he's going to catch on. He's
00:55:17going to get the right signal. He's going to take off because he is. Whoa! Emerson locked him up
00:55:24totally as Fittipaldi misjudged the braking area in turn one and now has fallen backwards as he's
00:55:32got to get it back up to speed. That was costly. There's also a continuing display of smoke at the
00:55:37back of the car. Yes, and that wasn't dust for a while. It was too much smoke. And there is Paul
00:55:42Tracy behind him now. Remember, Tracy was running fourth behind Fittipaldi, and you see he's right
00:55:47on top of him now. There goes. And Fittipaldi's got more than a brake problem. He's got an engine
00:55:51problem. I wonder if he wasn't sliding in his own oil. He probably really was because he's
00:55:56definitely got smoke coming out. Let's look at it again here, Bobby. Here comes Emo into the
00:56:00braking zone. Yeah, here he is. He's awfully late. He's too late on the brake and no smoke right now,
00:56:06though. Now we've got a lot of smoke, a lot of smoke coming down. Front tires locking up and
00:56:10there's smoke in the rear. You can see smoke now, but he's not to the turn yet. So obviously
00:56:15he's broken something. Could be the rear end. There's more than one problem there, Jackaroo.
00:56:19Well, Paul, believe it or not, Paul Tracy, his teammate radioed into the crew to let them know
00:56:24that the rear end of the car was literally on fire. So they're calling Emerson Fittipaldi in
00:56:29right now. Oh, no, he's not coming in. He stopped on the edge of the course. Black smoke poured out
00:56:34of the exhaust here. Fittipaldi's out of the car as they put the fire out. He was in no danger with
00:56:40it. You could see that dark gray smoke coming out of it. That's material burning like carbon fiber
00:56:46oil combination, but not steam from the engine. All right, let me ask you the question. Then,
00:56:51Bobby, we're talking circuit roughness. Is that something to do with the rear suspension of the
00:56:55car? Well, I don't really think so. He could have had a transmission problem going. Most
00:57:00likely had brakes overheating. This track is really hard on brakes. So Emerson Fittipaldi
00:57:06is out of the fight as teammate Allenser Jr. Continues to lead,
00:57:10and Paul Tracy now moves up to third place with the retirement of Fittipaldi.
00:57:18Back in the Buckeye states, the Grand Prix of Cleveland presented by Goodyear. There's
00:57:22Adrian Fernandez currently running in eighth place as we watch Raul Boissel who sits ahead
00:57:29of a battle, sixth, seventh and eighth, which is Boissel, Guzulmin and Fernandez.
00:57:36This is Raul's eighth race here in the Cleveland-Burke Lakefront Airport,
00:57:40and there they are. The Hollywood car belongs to Mauricio Guzulmin. That's Fernandez just behind
00:57:45him. They've been having one heck of a hard race. Fernandez in the back in the last of that little
00:57:52pack right there in the green and the red car. Mexican driver from Mexico, and he's really
00:57:56catching on this year, driving for Rick Dallas. Little Al's seat that he left last year at the
00:58:03end of last year for Minsky's right this year. The bud car of Scott Goodyear is not in the fight.
00:58:07He actually is 21st, but he can provide camera coverage for us as we look ahead to the 88 car
00:58:13of Guzulmin. Guzulmin is a driver that's really looked good all year. Ironically, he's a teammate
00:58:20to Michael Andretti, a team that really doesn't associate with each other very much. He is,
00:58:24but he isn't. But ironically, Paul, he's been the fastest of the two all year so far. Not a
00:58:30whole lot of information being shared between those teams then. Gary Gerald. Well, for Mauricio
00:58:35Guzulmin, some encouraging news in the last couple of weeks. They have found extra money now,
00:58:39a revenue that they can get into a test schedule. He was able to test just one day thus far this
00:58:44season. Now they've scheduled four more test days, two for oval track, two for road course.
00:58:49They think that's going to help them immensely as they try to become more competitive in this
00:58:52series. I can't help but help. I know that. And in my opinion, that boy needs a lot of help. He's
00:58:58one of the brightest ones we've seen all year. You linked him with Robbie Gordon and a few of
00:59:03those guys like that. You're looking at some really good drivers coming along. Guzulmin,
00:59:06of course, with a long background in Formula one, one of those men who's found his way now
00:59:11in the IndyCar racing at the top. Seventy one laps now complete. Eighty five laps of
00:59:18scheduled distance here. Two hundred and one miles. Bike broken off for the moment.
00:59:26There comes Fernandez, the lone driver for the Gallus team, which in the past has been a
00:59:33multi-car team with such greats as Danny Sullivan and Allenser Jr. Danny Sullivan,
00:59:38by the way, is on the grounds here thinking about next year. One of the other drivers
00:59:42that constantly gets named for places like Newman Haas Racing. What do you think of that, Bobby?
00:59:46Well, I really personally don't think Danny is going to be back. I think in his mind,
00:59:51he's kind of retired. But you and I have a little bet on it. So we'll see how that comes out next
00:59:55year. I think he'd like to be with Newman Haas. Don't you? Well, that might that might motivate
01:00:01a guy a little bit. Newman Haas is a pretty good team. I was going to say, who wouldn't?
01:00:20Looking back for Stephon Johansson. That, of course, is not him. Stephon just behind
01:00:24the 19 MyJack car. The red and the blue car, Stephon Johansson. One heck of a good driver.
01:00:30Really been grinding hard today. And another promising driver, Alessandro Zampedri, who's
01:00:35being just lined up now by Stephon Johansson. Zampedri on the right. Bright young talent,
01:00:42I think, from Brescia, Italy, where the Mille Miglia used to start from. Zampedri, who I talked
01:00:47to, Gary and I both did at some length the other day, talked about his background in Formula 3000
01:00:55in Europe and how he's making the adjustment to the Indy cars. You see he's having a beautiful
01:01:00run against Johansson. Johansson, of course, driving for Tony Bentonhausen, based out of
01:01:05Indianapolis, Indiana. Alumax, a sponsor on the car just behind them. You get a glimpse from time
01:01:11to time as Nigel Mansell closes in. Johansson runs in fifth place. He's having a marvelous day.
01:01:18You see Nigel right up in the corner of the screen there as we look down from the Goodyear
01:01:21Blimp. Johansson driving for car owner driver Tony Bentonhausen. Well, this gives you an idea.
01:01:28It is truly an airport. There's runway 24 right. They come off onto the taxiways.
01:01:35But, you know, I got to say again about Zampedri. Here's a car, and then Johansson's making a bid.
01:01:40We'll see if this is a clean shot. Yep. He lets him go by. That's a nice, clean thing,
01:01:45not for position. Zampedri's running tenth, and it's not often that you see Dale Coyne's
01:01:50equipment running that far up front. Robby Buell was their driver the early part of the season.
01:01:55He was usually mired down around 18th or 20th, so this is a real good day for Dale Coyne. Well,
01:02:00Dale Coyne, who used to be a driver, Sam, I think he kind of relates to the drivers pretty well.
01:02:06You know, one of the interesting things about the Burke Lakefront Airport is it being a FAA
01:02:12runway airport facility. Naturally, there are a lot of planes landing here, so there's a buildup
01:02:17of rubber on what is already a fairly abrasive concrete straightaway for the IndyCars. And the
01:02:22guys the first couple of years were so surprised where they'd come sliding out, and they'd hit
01:02:26that area where all the rubber had been laid down by the aircraft, and the car would just suddenly
01:02:31stick real good and launch ahead. So now they've made it part of the whole way that they race
01:02:36here at the Burke Lakefront Airport. So Al Unser Jr. is out in front now with 75 laps complete.
01:02:42He is dominating this race here. The waterfront in Cleveland, Ohio, the view is down from the
01:02:55Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company blimp. They've dispatched the blimp spirit from nearby Akron,
01:03:00Ohio, to provide aerial views of the 1994 Cleveland Grand Prix. There she is, floating overhead,
01:03:06giving us some great coverage shots as well today. Yeah, you know, they didn't have to come very far
01:03:10to get to this race. Those guys really like that. You got our boat parked down there in the rain.
01:03:15Boy, look at this. There's some spectators on the side. Hi, Ari. Hi, Emerson. Emerson doesn't even
01:03:20know we're here. Well, there's two drivers that are sorry they're out of the race. Look at him.
01:03:23Well, you can just see him out there just grinding his teeth, saying, Wow, I wish I was still in
01:03:27there. I'm not even going to ask why they were out there, though. In front of the toilet, Jack.
01:03:32Well, a problem on my crop. He's come to rest in what we call the back 40 of the mains of the
01:03:38racetrack. He's not going to be able to make it back in without a toe. The reason
01:03:42the fuel pump let go on the race car. So it's an early exit for my crop. That's too bad. More
01:03:48Honda problems. Isn't that a shame? Have a boy when they get it going. Get out of their way.
01:03:52There are three Honda engines that started the race. Now just one in the car. Parker Johnstone
01:03:58is still running that one, not in contention. And most of these Honda engines, incidentally,
01:04:02under different configurations. Mauricio Guzman now in a fight with Fernandez battle for seven.
01:04:11I started to say the Honda engines are different configurations. They have
01:04:14some of the engines like in Ray Hall. They fire two pistons at once, like they do the
01:04:19Ford and the Gilmore engines, and the others are like normal passenger car engines. There's
01:04:24different configurations from Honda so they can try to do their development at a faster pace.
01:04:29Bobby, it's interesting. The one that's still running is the older configuration Honda engine.
01:04:33The two newer ones had trouble. They've tried all sorts of stuff in the last couple of weeks.
01:04:37They've had four test days. They tried a new plenum. It didn't work out, but they are.
01:04:42They've got a fire lit underneath them over at Honda, and they're trying to be competitive. Now
01:04:47watching goes remaining Fernandez. Fernandez sweeps to the inside,
01:04:51and he's got him. Favorite place to pass right going into turn one.
01:04:56Fernandez grabs seven. Often the guys pass like that, and you would see the other guy come back
01:05:01again, somewhat like Emil did when he came out of the pits. These are two Raynard cars. Raynard,
01:05:06of course, being the new chassis manufacturer new to the series this year, and started off winning,
01:05:12of course, in Australia. So we thought maybe they were going to dominate all year, but
01:05:16they seemed to. There's Michael stopping for some reason. Another Raynard. Another
01:05:21stop at the edge of the course in the car safety team right there to get him clear of traffic.
01:05:25Look at the nose of the car. Yes, he's definitely got the right front. Looks like it's bent to the
01:05:29nose. Got bumped in the right front bed, so he probably ran into somebody else. The nose actually
01:05:35was damaged earlier, so there's been yet another incident. Here's tail Bobby. Now look at this
01:05:40combination. Bobby, of course, had a brilliant start in IndyCar racing back in 1983 when he had
01:05:45the pole for so many races. One several races. Now the word is this might be his last year in
01:05:53IndyCar racing. Apparently, Jim Ball has tested a driver in secret, a young driver whose name has
01:06:00not been released yet, at Rattlesnake Raceway, Ball's private test track down in Texas. The idea
01:06:06is that Bobby may be on his way out. Now, Bobby had a brilliant fourth place at Detroit a few
01:06:11weeks ago. You see Al Unser, Jr. coming by him with great ease there. I don't think there's any
01:06:15question. I don't think anyone even within the team questions Bobby's ability. It's the idea
01:06:19of getting some new blood and reconstituting the team. Dale Bobby runs in ninth place. In
01:06:24tenth place is Alessandro Zampagri. And Robby Gordon, owing partially to driving and partially
01:06:30to attrition, is moving up. And Gordon now runs in 11th place. Michael Andretti, of course,
01:06:37retired. If you look at the running order four laps ago, five laps ago now, 81 laps now complete.
01:06:42We're in the closing stages of this race. Is this man going to do it again? Boy, it sure looks that
01:06:47way. But one can't forget when you have an onset like Fittipaldi had that took him out of the race.
01:06:54If I'm in one of those other cars, Bobby, I got to be thinking, have I got the same engineering
01:06:58problem? Well, they're evaluating that. I promise you that's an advantage to having one, two or
01:07:02three cars. There's a lot of disadvantages, of course, but that's one of the advantages.
01:07:07You have problems with one. You look at the other one. Little Al came in her pit stop.
01:07:11They're obviously looking really close at the car so they can tell whether slow down,
01:07:14keep his pace or speed up. Well, Penske domination has been the story of the season this year so far.
01:07:20But except for Alonzo Junior's performance today, the Penske team has not been dominant. Mansell
01:07:26has been very fast. Emerson Fittipaldi has had trouble. And unusually enough, Paul Tracy has
01:07:32not shown exceptional speed. He's third now. He's never been up front in this race. And it's only
01:07:38Alonzo Junior that's really held the pace for Penske. Normally, you'd say this is Tracy's track.
01:07:44One of the other things about running on an airport circuit, they will not let the IndyCar
01:07:49officials install the specialized computer antenna lines that sense the car's passage
01:07:55over the track. And so we don't have our usual EDS scoring here back to the old manual scoring
01:08:01system. And so we're not able to bring it quite as many representations of the field as we would
01:08:07like to. But we are getting some great help from Russ Thompson and Fran Leonard, who have been
01:08:11keeping track of everything here in the booth for us and doing a superlative job in doing that.
01:08:16Money comes right here, guys. No problem at all. Alonzo Junior out in front. Nigel Mansell runs
01:08:21in second place. But it's a long way to go to get up to the front. But you can see from the
01:08:30beating that the drivers take here that at any moment something can go wrong. A suspension part
01:08:37just watch Nigel's head right there. He's really getting a lot of beat.
01:08:42Looks like he's getting beat up pretty bad. Airplanes, of course, have a lot more suspension
01:08:47travel and IndyCar about five feet compared to five inches. Just like a little Al's head
01:08:52go up and down those last bumps that he went to really a rough course. He'll be sore tonight.
01:08:58And you're saying little Al is actually suffering from some back problems. But
01:09:03do any of you notice that when you're in the car? Absolutely. He is so sore getting into it.
01:09:08They've already had to change his seat. He was doing that yesterday. I was down this morning,
01:09:13popping his back. He's been down with doctors while they've been working on it.
01:09:17Jim Swintell with the white flag. One more lap to go for Al Unser, Jr. And he's up right behind
01:09:22Bellinum, who is almost to get a laugh. But, of course, it won't make any difference this point
01:09:27in the race. Al Unser, Jr. From the pole to a win here. They can only complete this lap,
01:09:35and that seems so very certain at this point in a marvelous season for little Al. Remember,
01:09:40this will make five out of six times that Al Unser, Jr. Has started from the pole and going
01:09:46on to win the race. You know, he's going to do it. He's going to do his father's record here.
01:09:51That big Al's record before too long, because he's winning an awful lot of races this year.
01:09:56He's already getting up with A.J. Floyd and my brother Al. Now, your brother's one thing. He
01:10:01goes after your record. That's real trouble, right? Terrible. So, Al Unser, Jr., down the
01:10:06final long straightaway, looking at career win number 24 and the fifth of the year. A right
01:10:12and then a left and then a checkered flag lies in wait on the runways of the Burke Lakefront
01:10:17Airport. And Al Unser, Jr. Has taken his fifth win of the year and stretches his points lead
01:10:24in the IndyCar battle for the championship. Raul Boisel, Adrian Fernandez just behind him.
01:10:32A battle for sixth place. Can Fernandez get him before the line? The only battle left on the
01:10:38track as it turns for home. It's going to be hard, but he's going to try. Fernandez trying to catch
01:10:45up. Just a few hundred feet to go. He might be able to get it done. Don't think he's going to do
01:10:53it, Bob. Comes off the corner with a valiant effort and really swings out to try and get all
01:10:59the momentum he can, but he can't catch Raul Boisel. So, they finish Unser, Jr., Mansell,
01:11:05Paul Tracy in third, Jacques Villeneuve, Stephan Johansson, Raul Boisel, Adrian Fernandez,
01:11:12Mauricio Guzman, and Tao Bobby. You know, I think the biggest thing that's going to help
01:11:16little Al so far this season is this race because this is the race where he won and
01:11:21Emil fell out. That's where he really makes a gain on the points. All right, take a look at this.
01:11:28One-to-one. What a play on words. Starting on the pole, finishing first. Fifth time in his career.
01:11:35And only once did he not accomplish that feat, and that was at Australia several years ago when
01:11:42he started first and finished fourth. It's interesting, all four winners from the pole
01:11:48at Cleveland have been driving for Roger Penske. Sullivan, Fittipaldi,
01:11:52Tracy, and Al Unser, Jr., now. Al Unser, Jr., when he is hot, he is sizzling.
01:11:59And here at the Burke Lakefront Airport, he has taken the win. We'll be back.
01:12:05Unofficial for the moment in the Grand Prix of Cleveland presented by Goodyear,
01:12:09but it seems certainly official that Al Unser, Jr. has taken the win, Jackaroo.
01:12:13And, Paul, he did it with a record speed of 138.3 miles per hour. Congratulations, man.
01:12:20Number five for the season. Yeah, I tell you. I just got to thank the whole Marlboro team,
01:12:26Penske. This car is such a beautiful race car, and I think it's going to be a great
01:12:33race car. And, you know, more engines, they've done their homework. You know,
01:12:37we're running right with the Cosworths, and so, you know, what can I say? It was a good day for
01:12:42the team. What does a solid race car do for the mindset for a driver?
01:12:48Well, it just, you know, it shows on the first lap. You know, the first couple laps,
01:12:53you know, we kind of just pulled away from him, and makes it start, you start concentrating on
01:12:58your line instead of the guy behind you, and you can really start making everything happen for you,
01:13:03and the car just responds really well, and so it's great. You know, it was one thing winning
01:13:09the Indianapolis 500. People said, well, he had the Mercedes engine, but now with the domination
01:13:14that you and the entire team is having, if you were on the other side of the coin like you were
01:13:19in other years, what would you be telling your crews right now about Team Penske? Well, I'd tell
01:13:25you, I've been in that spot before, you know, and I've told them, gosh, they're just unbeatable, but
01:13:32this team is really a great team, and the car is a great car, and, you know, Richard Buck and the
01:13:38guys are just doing a great job preparing it, and so it's going to the end, and that's what we need.
01:13:44With Roger Penske at the head of things, you've had a lot of great car owners, you've had a lot of
01:13:49great relationships with car owners, but what's the relationship between you and Roger Penske,
01:13:54and how is it developing and maturing as the season progresses? Well, it's maturing really
01:13:59well, you know, we're getting to know each other more and more, and, you know, me and Terry Satchel,
01:14:04my engineer, starting to get to know each other more and more, and it's just great, you know, I'm
01:14:09starting to tell in Roger's tone about what's going on, and so it's wonderful.
01:14:16You know, before the start of the race, on camera, we talked about the fact that you knocked your
01:14:20teammate, Paul Tracy, out of the hunt for the million dollar bonus, but people forget that
01:14:24Team Penske has not been in the national championship limelight for, what, maybe seven years now, and
01:14:31that's really what your concentration is about. That's right, you know, Roger, last time he won
01:14:36this championship was 1988, and I run second that year, and so the main thing about,
01:14:43you know, when we were talking about him hiring me and all that, he said, all I wanted is the
01:14:48number one on the car, and so that's all we're trying to give him. Well, he's looking for that
01:14:53number one, and Gary Gerald, it doesn't ever get to be old hat in victory lane for Team Penske.
01:14:58It certainly doesn't. Nigel Mansell talking now with Peter Gibbons, his chief engineer on the
01:15:02Newman Haas team. His children and his wife had just arrived a moment ago. Nigel, let's get a
01:15:07word about your reaction to this event, and I know that there's a feeling I could sense as soon as
01:15:11you got out of the car. You gave it everything you could today, but this Penske team is just
01:15:15proving to be so very, very tough. I thought I won, didn't I win? It felt like I won. I waved
01:15:22the white flag and I threw it at him, but I even missed throwing it at him. Now, you had a couple
01:15:26of adventures. Let's start first when you slapped the wall down here in Turn 8 with the left rear.
01:15:31Yeah, I mean, I got in a real big power slide, and I just didn't want to get out of it because
01:15:36I was sort of holding on to, I think it was Paul at the time, and I hit the wall real hard, but
01:15:41fortunately it was square, and then we had another incident coming out of the chicane where my
01:15:45teammates side-swiped me a little bit. Yeah, now I wanted to talk about that. What was the
01:15:49scenario from your seat? He just came straight across. You talk about this with him? No, it's
01:15:56just one of those racing things. I just hope it wasn't on purpose. It shouldn't be, but
01:16:01you know, I think he's got to watch where he's going a bit more. Now, on the positive side of
01:16:05this day, you gain two positions in the point standings. You go now from fifth to third. I
01:16:09would think that would be encouraging. Yeah, you know, I mean, the Newman House team just did a
01:16:13fantastic job today. There's no question that the Penske is the team to beat this year. I mean,
01:16:18they've got three fantastic drivers. Anyone can win at any race, and I mean, as I said, I only
01:16:23came second today, but I feel as though the Newman House team won. So we close out today for you.
01:16:29Cleveland at the Burke Lakefront Airport, and they have signed up again for next year.
01:16:33Look at the final results from round eight of the PPG IndyCar World Series. Al Unser Jr. with
01:16:38a victory. Nigel Mansell, second. Paul Tracy, third. Pretty much was there all day. Jacques Villeneuve,
01:16:44the fastest and quickest of the Raynards, in fourth. Stephanie Johansson, in a 93. Penske,
01:16:49in fifth. Raul Boasal, in sixth, in his Lola Ford. Adrian Fernandez, the Mexican, in seventh. The
01:16:54Brazilian, Guzman, eighth. Italian, Teofabe Knight. Italian, Alessandro Zampedri, in tenth.
01:17:00Robbie Gordon worked his way back up to eleventh after running 24th at one point, and will get two
01:17:05points. And Willie T. Ridd scores his first points of the season with a 12th place finish.
01:17:10Brian Hurter, a long weekend for him, 14th. Scott Goodyear, the Canadian, 14th. 15th, Hiro Matsushita.
01:17:1616th, Andrea Montemini. 17th, Parker Johnston, in the only Honda car engine to finish. And 18th,
01:17:22Michael Andretti, after a first lap incident. 19th, Mike Groff, not running at the end. Emerson
01:17:28Fittipaldi, Lyon Dyke-Smith, Jeff Wood, Scott Sharp, all having their trouble as the day went on,
01:17:33as did teammate Dominic Dobson. Brazilian, Marco Greco. Mario Andretti, taken out by his teammate,
01:17:39as he says. Bobby Rahal is in 28th position. Ross Bentley, 29th. Giovanni Lavaggi is listed as
01:17:4730th. So that will wrap it up for the Cleveland Grand Prix.
01:17:51Classic SportsCenter Top 10s, brought to you by Molson Canadian.
01:18:04Dark, obviously very wet. Condition's bad. Oh, Michael runs into the back of David.
01:18:11Looks like it's kind of hard to see, but Michael's close. Not looking too happy.
01:18:18He's got about 50 people in between him and David. Looks like he's not going to get close.
01:18:26This was a good one from last year. Harvick, he's got a really hot temper. Seems to always be
01:18:32getting in some kind of trouble. Drive into the side of the car, can't go anywhere. Jump out,
01:18:39get on top of the car. There goes the hands device. I don't think Ricky Redd,
01:18:46the guy, would want to mess around with it. Oh, this is me. Ran out of fuel about 200 yards from
01:18:53the finish line at Montreal. We were running in fourth and ran out of fuel and lost three
01:18:59positions. So I was kind of upset. That's a $25,000 steering wheel that got broken.
01:19:07A little bump and run. It's like you can play the same highlight over and over again.
01:19:13There goes a boot protector. Ward Burton. Doesn't look very happy.
01:19:22Car going around. Elliot Sadler. Break your hand on the ambulance.
01:19:29Good thing he didn't break his hand.
01:19:33Jimmy Johnson gives a salute.
01:19:35This is Ward Burton again. He doesn't look happy again.
01:19:45I like this one. This is Robby Gordon. Tony Stewart's always the guy that plays the
01:19:50intimidator. He gives Robby Gordon a shove and then watch Robby Gordon grab him back. You notice
01:19:56Tony Stewart's eyes get real big, like what do I do now? Uh-oh. He looks a little scared right here.
01:20:02Dominating weekend. Hole both days. And a win. The old SARS mask. All in good fun. All in good fun.
01:20:13Pagliani. It's metrosexual. Beard and mustache. Looks great.
01:20:23Oh, this was a good one. Ari Leindyke and AJ Poit. Ari Leindyke and AJ Poit.
01:20:32He should have won the race. It turned out he did win the race. He turns around,
01:20:36AJ gives him a cheap shot on the back of the neck and pushes him over when his backs turn.
01:20:43That's a sneaky Texan.
01:20:48Nice right cross.
01:20:52Good follow through. Good extension. Might have a second career as a boxer.
01:20:58This is the classic of all time. TK leading the race, lapping a greasy old salad bar at the end of the race.
01:21:10And then, whammo, out of the race. That was pretty unfair, really. TK's mad.
01:21:18A couple of punches and his best imitation of a David Beckham.
