00:00:00It is a beautiful crystal clear day in Phoenix, Arizona.
00:00:23We're at Phoenix International Raceway ready for the Auto Works 200, the opening IndyCar
00:00:28race of the 1990s.
00:00:31Beautiful blue skies overhead, 79 degrees, it's expected to go into the 80s.
00:00:35Humidity is nice and low and the winds are very gentle, 7 miles an hour.
00:00:41The crowds have been pouring in here, as have the racing teams, and we're ready to start
00:00:47a new decade.
00:00:48It's been a winter of dreaming and designing for the designers of these IndyCars.
00:00:52Hello, I'm Paul Page, and this race here at Phoenix is very, very important, not just
00:00:57because it's the race of the season, but because what happens here at Phoenix directly
00:01:02translates to what the cars need to race in the Indianapolis 500.
00:01:06Of course, after today, two weeks from now, we'll bring you the Long Beach race, and then,
00:01:10of course, the granddaddy of them all, the Indy 500 late in May.
00:01:14Now, if you consider the record, then maybe this race has even more significance.
00:01:19Consider back to the beginning of the 70s, 1970, Al Unzer won the first race of the season,
00:01:24and then went on and won the Indianapolis 500 in that year and the championship.
00:01:28Then at the start of the 80s, the same thing happened.
00:01:31Johnny Rutherford won the first race, then he won the Indy 500, and then he won the championship.
00:01:36Well, is that what's going to happen this year at the start of the 90s?
00:01:39Well, if that's so, then the man perhaps with the best shot is Rick Mears.
00:01:43He shattered the track record and sits on the pole.
00:01:46Let's go down there now.
00:01:47Jack, over to you.
00:01:48And Paul, add to that numerology the fact that Rick Mears, for three consecutive years,
00:01:52has sat on the pole here at Phoenix International Raceway, and indeed, he's the defending champion
00:01:56of the event.
00:01:57Late yesterday, in fact, in the final practice session, he had an engine go awry the second
00:02:01of the weekend, and it was a signal, because you got up at 4.30 this morning to test the
00:02:05new engine in the car, leaving nothing to chance, but what was the signal in the car,
00:02:08Rick, that the engine was going away yesterday?
00:02:10Well, there really wasn't any real strong signal, and the engine very well could be
00:02:14okay, but we didn't want to take a chance on it.
00:02:17Something told me at the end of the session, I didn't hear it at the beginning, but at
00:02:20the end, like, it changed note, the exhaust note or something, and something was just
00:02:24telling me that it didn't quite feel right, so when that came about, we just said we weren't
00:02:28going to take a chance on it, so we pulled it out and stuck another one in.
00:02:30And after they stuck it in, you went over to the airport in Goodyear, Arizona, and you
00:02:33tested on the runways this morning.
00:02:35Yeah, we did a few quick laps up and down.
00:02:37Everything felt fine.
00:02:38The guys did a tremendous job putting it together, so we're ready to go, Hope.
00:02:41Well, he's got a brand new car.
00:02:42You know, in the past, Roger Penske's cars were named PCs, all the way to PC19s of last
00:02:47year, but this year, they're called Penske Chevrolet 90s, and this is the Chevy 90 with
00:02:53Chevrolet Power.
00:02:54Now, for more information on the front row, welcome to our ABC telecast team for motorsports,
00:02:59Mr. Gary Gerald.

00:03:01Jack, thank you so much.
00:03:02Let me tell you, the guy alongside got to sleep in.
00:03:04He wasn't up at 4 o'clock this morning.
00:03:06It's the first time for Al Anser, Jr. to be in the front row at a Noble, and I know you're
00:03:10delighted in that fact, but the record-setting Mirrors is a half-second faster.
00:03:14Have you and your team got enough muscle to keep him from running away with this race?
00:03:18Well, I sure hope so.
00:03:19You know, it's going to be a long race, and a half-second in a 200-mile event really doesn't
00:03:24mean much, so hopefully, our pit stops are going to be real good, and we can... our better
00:03:30average is going to win the race.
00:03:32Well, the Anser name has had great success at this racetrack.
00:03:35His dad has won here six times.
00:03:36His Uncle Bobby, that we're going to be hearing from in a matter of moments, has won here
00:03:40four times, and this is the machine.
00:03:42It's a Lola chassis.
00:03:43It's a brand new one.
00:03:44It's a tight, snug fit, and Al Anser, Jr. is about to slide into it right now to get
00:03:48ready to go racing.
00:03:49Let's check back now further in the grid, again with Jack.
00:03:51Gary, on the inside of row number two, another Penske Chevrolet.
00:03:55This one for the defending PPG IndyCar World Series champion, Emerson Fittipaldi.
00:03:59Fittipaldi has moved over to make it a potent three-car team.
00:04:02He's brought the famous number one to the inside of the second row.
00:04:06He'll start in that third position.
00:04:08The color scheme's the same, but on the outside is Bobby Rahal.
00:04:11First race for Bobby Rahal was Chevrolet Power.
00:04:14First race with a merged team, now driving as a teammate to Al Anser, Jr.
00:04:18One win last year.
00:04:19He has one win at Phoenix, that a 150-miler, all the way back in 1984.
00:04:25Let's go to Gary Gerald.
00:04:26Gary?
00:04:27Jack, we go to the third row, and inside, here's the remaining member of the Penske
00:04:29powerhouse team.
00:04:30It's Danny Sullivan.
00:04:31He's never won here at this racetrack.
00:04:33His best Phoenix finish was a second in 86.
00:04:36Last year, he was third.
00:04:37It's another of the Penske 90 Chevrolets, alongside Mario Andretti.
00:04:42Mario has been racing here at Phoenix since the mid-1960s.
00:04:45This is his 39th time to run this one-mile oval.
00:04:49He's won here three times in the past.
00:04:51He again drives for the Newman-Haas Kmart Avalon team.
00:04:54It's a Lola chassis.
00:04:55We drive back now to the next row.
00:04:57Inside, Dominic Dobson.
00:04:58The car number is 86.
00:05:00It's the Texaco Avalon Star.
00:05:02It's another Lola chassis.
00:05:03This is Cosworth Power.
00:05:04It's the highest-qualifying non-Chevrolet engine, and it starts inside in row number
00:05:09four, alongside Michael Andretti.
00:05:12Michael had some tough luck in his Kmart Avalon Lola.
00:05:15He got into the wall in an incident early yesterday.
00:05:17Had to go to the backup car, but they think that everything is okay.
00:05:20They did get some laps in it.
00:05:22He's confident.
00:05:23He's ready for 200 miles.
00:05:24Let's go upstairs to Paul Page.
00:05:26Well, helping us with the coverage again this season, Bobby Unser, three-time winner of
00:05:30the Indianapolis 500, four-time winner here, Bobby.
00:05:33The designers worked, well, a little over a year to get these cars ready, and they've
00:05:36come up with some great creations.
00:05:38They certainly have, Paul.
00:05:39The cars are different this year.
00:05:42Number one, the Rulesmakers cart.
00:05:44They've tried to slow the cars down a little bit from last year.
00:05:46Thought they were going a little bit too fast, and the way they've done it mainly is by cutting
00:05:49down the tunnels or the ground effects in the car, so theoretically, they don't go around
00:05:53the turns quite as fast.
00:05:54Now, the Rulesmakers have to counteract this, or excuse me, the designers, so what they've
00:06:00done is they've made the cars really skinny so they could go down the straightaways faster,
00:06:04get through the air a little cleaner.
00:06:06Now, what's really happened is all this seems to work, but the drivers can hardly get into
00:06:10the cars.
00:06:11The Lowlands, for example, are extra skinny.
00:06:14They get in, and they have no way to hardly move their arms.
00:06:16Their shoulders just lock in, but all of this seems to work.
00:06:20The cars seem to have slowed down just a little bit, all except for Rick Mears and the Penske
00:06:24Chevrolet.
00:06:25He is awesome fast, and if I have to make a guess today, it has to be Rick Mears against
00:06:30the field, so we'll see.
00:06:32All right, so Bobby Unser is on the record.
00:06:34Let's continue taking a close look at this field now and go to the fifth row in Jack
00:06:38A'Ruth.
00:06:39Well, on that fifth row, a brand new ride for a brand new resident of the state of Arizona,
00:06:43Ari Leyendyk, moving over the winter, over to Team Shearson as well as down to the sun
00:06:47country here.
00:06:48He is a driver that is winless on the PPG Indy World Series, but his best finish was
00:06:52in second.
00:06:53He is driving with Team Shearson.
00:06:55On the outside, Scott Brayton, 81 career starts, his best finish, a fifth.
00:06:59He is driving a Cosworth-powered development car for Dick Simon Racing.
00:07:04Then the man that is going to relieve an injured Scott Pruitt.
00:07:09Starting the True Sports ride just several days ago, coming out here to Phoenix, Arizona,
00:07:13Raul Boisel.
00:07:14Boisel, driving for True Sports, he is a car that will be using Judd Power Plants, and
00:07:19on the outside, the legend himself.
00:07:21In car number 14, Chevrolet power for the first time for the man that has more wins
00:07:26than anybody else in IndyCar competition, his 346th career start for AJ Boyd from Houston,
00:07:32Texas.
00:07:33Gary?
00:07:34We're at row seven now.
00:07:35In car number four, Teo Fabi, the little Italian who last year made such a great ride
00:07:40in mid-Ohio to get Quaker State Porsche's first win.
00:07:43They'd hoped to have a 1990 chassis available, but they ran into some difficulties, had to
00:07:47rebuild the car.
00:07:49So they go to the 89 March chassis.
00:07:52They're a little disappointed in that respect.
00:07:53They haven't had the test time that they'd hoped to have.
00:07:56They're starting further back in the grid than they had hoped.
00:07:58They go inside in row number seven, alongside Roberto Guerrero.
00:08:02New colors for Roberto this year, again in the Alfa Romeo.
00:08:05This is a March 1990 chassis.
00:08:07He's now a member of Pat Patrick's racing team, and Roberto won here three years ago
00:08:11in 1987.
00:08:13Brushed the wall in practice on Friday.
00:08:15Everything's okay.
00:08:16He's ready to go from the 14th starting position.
00:08:19In the eighth row inside, Poncho Carter.
00:08:22Poncho's been coming to Phoenix for a lot of years.
00:08:23He's run 18 events at this racetrack.
00:08:26He has finished in the top five on three occasions the last three years.
00:08:30He has been a seventh place finisher.
00:08:32He drives for the leader car team.

00:08:37Alongside in the eighth row is John Andretti.
00:08:39John a new teammate for Tao Fabi and the Porsche Quaker State team.

00:08:46John Andretti is driving here for the first time today.

00:08:49Taking a look at the rest of this 24 car starting field, Eddie Cheever will start on his first
00:08:55oval in the ninth row.
00:08:57Jim Crawford back to racing the Indy cars there in the tenth row.
00:09:00There are 13 brand new cars in this field.
00:09:02Seven are 89s, four are 1988 models.
00:09:06We're ready to go.

00:10:31Of course, they're looking to win this race.
00:10:34There's a $700,000 purse on the line today.
00:10:37The race record set by Roberto Guerrero at 138.020 miles an hour.
00:10:42Rick Mears on the pole is the defending champion.
00:10:45That's him running just that.
00:10:46The chassis, more Lola's in this field than anything else, more Chevrolet engines, ten
00:10:50of them.
00:10:51That's believed to be the power that you must beat in the IndyCars here in the 90s.
00:10:56The Auto Works 200, the valving car of Allenser Jr.

00:11:07This is Michael Andretti's car.
00:11:09This camera looks forward as he gives the crowd a wave on the traditional lap to salute
00:11:14the fans here in the stands, and on board here with Bobby Rayholm, the number 18, Franco

00:11:25We are now on the pace lap.
00:11:27The PPG parade cars have pulled off.
00:11:30A lone pace car sits in front of this front row.
00:11:34That yellow car, of course, number two is Rick Mears, the master of the old.
00:11:39On the outside, the blue and white car is Allenser Jr., the valving machine.
00:11:44The field now begins to form up as they approach the third and fourth turn, lined up nice and
00:11:51neat.
00:11:52What a pretty day, and a very pretty field.
00:11:53It's always nice at the start of the season, brand new paint jobs, pretty cars, and everybody
00:11:58set to go.
00:11:59The pace car begins to accelerate now, is off the track already.
00:12:03Rick Mears has control of the field as he brings the field down off of the fourth turn.
00:12:07Green flag is ready in the hands of the starter, and we're racing for the 1990s as Rick Mears
00:12:12and Little Al go into the first turn.
00:12:14Little Al comes around the outside, picks up the lead in turn one.
00:12:17Bobby Unser makes a move to the outside.
00:12:19He certainly does, Paul.
00:12:20That shows that Little Al is really, really going to charge today, because he knows that
00:12:24Rick Mears has been faster by about a half a second a lap, so he's on.
00:12:28The Andretti family lined up just behind Bobby Rahal.
00:12:31Rick Mears dropping back just a bit now.
00:12:33There you see the battle for third place.
00:12:36That's Bobby Rahal and the two Andretti Lolas, the Newman Haas team.
00:12:43Mainly now, everybody's going to be feeling each other out to see if they have any weaknesses
00:12:47or teeth.
00:12:48Looks like their competitor's not handling just right.
00:12:50Maybe a guy's pushing the front end or something like that, Paul.
00:12:53One of the things that the Lola teams, especially the Andrettis, have been concerned with was
00:12:58during practice, they noticed some turbulence as you ride with Al Unser Jr. out in front
00:13:02of the field.
00:13:03Nice, clear course ahead.
00:13:04They were concerned about some turbulence that they felt.
00:13:07Look how close he comes to that wall.
00:13:09And so they made some aerodynamic changes over the night to hopefully try to keep the
00:13:14car from wandering around and having a light feeling that they were sensing.
00:13:17I just hailed Bobby's in the pits.
00:13:20He came in right on the green flag.
00:13:22Now remember, this is an effort that they've really been struggling with here at Phoenix.
00:13:27Now that's the new Porsche, Paul.
00:13:30That thing has a turbocharger in front of the engine instead of where we've been seeing
00:13:34them in the back in all the other cars.
00:13:37Totally brand new concept, new design.
00:13:39Never been done before in automobile racing that I know of.
00:13:42It's a brand new car.
00:13:43In fact, so new that they've had very little practice time on it, and they're feeling that
00:13:47now as it's into the pits.
00:13:48Derek Walker, the team manager down there, it's his birthday.
00:13:52That's not a way to celebrate your birthday, the Pennzoil car.
00:13:54Rick Mears runs in second place and tries to close on little Al.
00:13:58Now, I talked to little Al this morning, Paul, and one of the things that came up that we
00:14:02talked about is he was worried about the sun coming up today.
00:14:05So he put more down force in the car.
00:14:07In other words, more rear wing, more front wing.
00:14:10Gambling on the track might get snippery.
00:14:12The fifth place car, Michael Andretti, you're on board as he battles with his father two
00:14:16very closely painted cars, though there are some distinctions.
00:14:20We'll try to point them out to you.
00:14:21In fact, it's a very special design, and they've worked very hard with these cars over the
00:14:27winter, and they've really narrowed them down.
00:14:29As Bobby suggested, they're physically a lot smaller.
00:14:32We saw one of these cars set alongside one of last year's cars.
00:14:35We'll have that opportunity during this run.
00:14:37You'll see how much more narrow the cars are.
00:14:41The Andretti cars work their way around.
00:14:43It's a battle for fourth place.
00:14:45Mario is in fourth right now, his son, Michael Stacey.
00:14:48A lot of people might think that the Andrettis are kind of playing in this, but they're not.
00:14:52Michael would just as soon beat his father as anybody else, and of course, his father
00:14:56would just as soon outrun his son.
00:14:58Bobby Rahal now has to work his way up through traffic.
00:15:03As he threads his way through, that's how quick the laps turn out here.
00:15:07They're running in traffic already.
00:15:09Rahal in third position behind Rick Mears and the leader, Al Unser, Jr.
00:15:13Look at him work his way through here.
00:15:15Wow.
00:15:16The Andrettis try to come through this area.
00:15:19That's Didier Thies that they worked around there, and there is Fittipaldi in the number
00:15:23one car as he moves in and now begins a challenge, trying to duck to the inside.
00:15:29The traffic is bad already.
00:15:30It's awfully early to be passing all that traffic, and of course, it really makes it
00:15:34fast for the fast cars because they have to really plan their deals.
00:15:37But a guy that gets caught in a little bit of traffic, hey, it's going to be bad if he's
00:15:40got a faster behind him, Paul.
00:15:42Fittipaldi closing on Michael Andretti.
00:15:44Fittipaldi runs in sixth place right now, so we're looking back to sixth place in the field.
00:15:48As now he closes in just a bit behind Mario now and tries to catch him.
00:15:57Now, that Fittipaldi's car, just so the people know, is identical to Rick Mears.
00:16:01The only thing is different.
00:16:02That's a Marlboro car.
00:16:04Scott Brayton in the Amway car.
00:16:06They black flagged him, brought him in for a stop and go.
00:16:09No indication as to the reason for that penalty, but Scott Brayton already back into the action.
00:16:14Scott Brayton's been pretty fast here.
00:16:16That's the new Cosworth engine in Scott Brayton's car.
00:16:19It's really a shame he had to get a black flag for whatever reason, but that is Cosworth's
00:16:24supposed answer to the Chevrolet.
00:16:26Back on board with the leader of the race, Al Unger Jr., who's turning a nice, even pace
00:16:31just above 151 miles an hour, averaged thus far.
00:16:36His quickest lap has been at 156, so they're down off their qualifying.
00:16:40On the left of your screen, the blue and white car is the Valvoline machine of little Al.
00:16:43The Pennzoil car, Rick Mears, is that bright yellow car running in second.
00:16:47With two big, major oil companies, this is what really makes racing so good.
00:16:51Valvoline against Pennzoil, or Pennzoil against Valvoline.
00:16:54Number five, Al Unger Jr.
00:16:56Looks for a win on an oval.
00:16:58Bobby, does that bother him that he's not been able to score on ovals?
00:17:01Yes, it certainly does.
00:17:03Paul has always had, but as we know, at 9,000 miles an hour,
00:17:07he's been just awesomely fast on ovals,
00:17:09but it just seems like all of his good luck has come on road circuits and not the ovals,
00:17:13so he's really trying to prove a point today.
00:17:15So Rick Mears in pursuit.
00:17:17A lot of people expect Rick to jump out on the start of the race
00:17:21as the leaders now begin to come into traffic,
00:17:24but Rick tends to let the start pace itself whatever way it is.
00:17:27He says it's important for him to be in front at the end of the race,
00:17:30not at the end of the first lap.
00:17:32He's definitely the fox.
00:17:34He's really the smartest, best oval track racer we've got running here right now,
00:17:38and for Rick to be in second right now, that's not going to bother him at all.
00:17:42He's looking at the win, not an issue like early in the race.
00:17:45They work their way past Didier Thaes and Dean Hall
00:17:48as the leaders now beginning to stretch the distance
00:17:51between their position and third place,
00:17:54with Al Unger Jr. out in front
00:17:56and trying to get away as fast as he can from Rick Mears.

00:18:04Right after this, 14 miles are complete.
00:18:09On board Michael Andretti's Kmart car as he comes to the straightaway.
00:18:13He's fighting with Bobby Rahal, who is just down to the inside.
00:18:17Michael was just able to move around another car
00:18:20and use that traffic position to put him in a place
00:18:23to pick up third as he fights with Rahal.
00:18:25It's an ongoing battle. There's Rahal's car.
00:18:28Two identical cars, both Lola Chevrolet.
00:18:31They're really having a battle.
00:18:33It's a question about which one of the teams
00:18:35gets these cars the best to suit the drivers.
00:18:37Rahal got caught up behind another car,
00:18:40so he's dropped back a little bit for Michael.
00:18:43As we take a look at the front of the field,
00:18:46there's the blue and white car.
00:18:48That is little Al, Al Unger Jr.,
00:18:50coming into traffic now
00:18:52as he comes alongside Dominic Dobson in the Texaco machine.
00:18:56It is giving Rick Mears an opportunity to close in.
00:18:59Look at him as he comes down on the inside
00:19:01and threads his way through.
00:19:03Went right by Jeff Woods.
00:19:05He was kind of holding things up there for a little while.
00:19:08Traffic, it's been a major factor
00:19:10early in the race, Paul, more than usual.
00:19:12Rick Mears cleared the traffic quickly
00:19:14and stays in contact with Al Unger Jr.
00:19:1622 miles are complete.
00:19:18Keep in mind, as little Al goes through
00:19:20and kind of moves the traffic over,
00:19:22it really makes it easier for Rick Mears
00:19:24because the guys have already moved over a little bit.
00:19:27You're on board with the leader, Al Unger Jr.
00:19:30And look at them work traffic.
00:19:32Again, they come by pace.
00:19:34Dominic Dobson to the high side.
00:19:36He moves up, lets little Al come through,
00:19:38and look at his head move back and forth.
00:19:40That gives you an idea how rough it is here.
00:19:42Yes, it really is.
00:19:43A lot of that, Paul, is air.
00:19:45It's the aerodynamics coming up around the windshield on the car.
00:19:48For some reason or another, you can watch his head moving there.
00:19:51And that's the air doing that, not so much the racetrack.
00:19:54You can see the body sitting nice and still.
00:19:56Little Al has more of a problem
00:19:58probably caused by the way he likes his windshield set in the car.
00:20:01Rick Mears now has one car separating him
00:20:04from his battle with Al Unger Jr. for the lead
00:20:06at blue and white number 5 out in front.
00:20:09Last time Al led the opening lap
00:20:11was last year at Long Beach, and he won that race.
00:20:14There's the result of the tennis from Hilton Head.
00:20:17Now final.
00:20:21And Dominic Dobson catches the wall.
00:20:24A yellow flag comes out.
00:20:27Brief flash of fire as the turbocharger shuts down.
00:20:30No danger there.
00:20:32Dobson about in the cockpit, so he appears to be
00:20:35at least conscious and is aware of his condition.
00:20:38The rescue truck's already rolling.
00:20:40Didn't look like it's all that bad, and he's coming out of the car.
00:20:43I don't think he hit much on the front end, mainly the rear, Paul.
00:20:46The thing about Dominic Dobson is he's really been fast all week.
00:20:49Last year and again this year, he's really surprised everybody.
00:20:53He's got basically what we call a stock Cosworth engine,
00:20:57and he's been way faster than some of the fast cars most of the time.
00:21:00This happened coming through the first turn.
00:21:03Now there's Dobson third in the line.
00:21:06And he just plain hit the rear end first,
00:21:09and what he did is the rear end is loose on the car.
00:21:12It just plain got out from under him, and he spun all his own making.
00:21:15Maybe caused a little bit by the turbulence from the car in front of him,
00:21:18but generally speaking, he just has his car set wrong, Paul.
00:21:22And you saw Rick Mears right behind him.
00:21:25We noted a couple of laps earlier that Rick Mears was set up separated,
00:21:28as we take a look one more time.
00:21:30That's the leader on the far left, and then Dominic Dobson,
00:21:33and Rick Mears holds his breath and ducks under
00:21:36as Dominic Dobson ends his day by catching the wall.
00:21:39He climbed out of the car under his own power, though.
00:21:41Appears to be all right.
00:21:43Here's one more angle of the same situation.
00:21:46As you see, the back end of the car just came unstuck,

00:22:11We're back in the desert in Phoenix, Arizona.
00:22:13Six guns and horses, but today we're looking at Horsepower,
00:22:17the Indy cars of cart in the Auto Works 200.
00:22:20Under yellow now with 30 miles complete,
00:22:23and the A.J. Voight car came down into the pits.
00:22:28Under the yellow flag.
00:22:30Now, we thought this might be a routine stop,
00:22:32but you can see that smoke at the top of the car,
00:22:35and they've decided as a result of this that the day is over for A.J.
00:22:38Looks like water, Paul.
00:22:40A couple of possibilities.
00:22:42He's got a leaking lot of water, and that's steam coming from it.
00:22:45That's really not a fire or anything like that,
00:22:47but obviously it's not done the engine any good.
00:22:49Obviously out of the race, too.
00:22:51Gary Gerald is down with A.J. Voight now.
00:22:54Well, Paul, we'll find out from the man who's had such great success
00:22:57over the years at this racetrack what the problem was today.
00:23:00It looked like a new style oil cooler,
00:23:02and it looked like it split and broke open and dumped oil.
00:23:05At the pit stop, we didn't know it,
00:23:07and the car was just phenomenal.
00:23:09The motor performed beautiful, and I was moving up easy,
00:23:11and we're back, I can say that.
00:23:13The fluid that we see here, is this oil or is this all water?
00:23:16Somebody thought for a moment there may have been a fire.
00:23:18Well, there was. There was a fire inside the car,
00:23:20and the oil was running on top of the back of me.
00:23:22You all right?
00:23:24Yeah, not too bad, but all I can say, fans, we're back.
00:23:27Indianapolis is not too far,
00:23:29and I know that's what that gleam in your eye is about.
00:23:31We're back.
00:23:33All right, A.J., you heard it from the man.
00:23:35He's looking for another one next month at Indianapolis.
00:23:37Yeah, and you can almost hear the cheer go up around the country
00:23:40as A.J. Voight said, we're back.
00:23:42Well, we certainly hope that's true.
00:23:44A.J. Voight looking for a fifth, unprecedented fifth,
00:23:47Indianapolis 500 win.
00:23:49So A.J. Voight out.
00:23:51Under the yellow, the leaders,
00:23:53Allenser Jr. and Rick Mears, both stopped,
00:23:55routine stop for fuel,
00:23:57and now Bobby Rahal has the lead of the race.
00:23:59Here's Jack Arute.
00:24:01Paul, let's update you on the black flag situation.
00:24:03You were trying to determine just why Scott Brayton was brought in.
00:24:06Well, you see there was some fluid leaking down
00:24:08onto one of the lower A-frames of the car,
00:24:10in the rear of the car.
00:24:12Well, what Dick Simon had done, they brought him in to check
00:24:14because they thought it was smoking so badly.
00:24:16He had put some asbestos down there
00:24:18because on the new 90 cars, they tend to heat.
00:24:20The exhaust headers go right towards that area and heat it up.
00:24:22Well, he put asbestos down there.
00:24:24A little bit of oil got in the asbestos,
00:24:26and in its heat-solving produce,
00:24:28it tended to smoke that oil and made it look far worse
00:24:30than it actually was, but for precaution's sake,
00:24:32he came on to pit road.
00:24:34All right, so that's the report on Scott Brayton.
00:24:36At the same time, Jim Crawford,
00:24:39starting the 51 Glidden Paint car,
00:24:41came into the pits, and they have decided
00:24:43that that Buick-powered machine is done for the day
00:24:46as they push it out of the way.
00:24:48So Jim Crawford with, well,
00:24:50now they're beginning to act as if they may want to
00:24:53put the car back into competition.
00:24:55There's Scotty Brayton, the 22 Amway car,
00:24:57as he's back into the competition.
00:24:59That's Poncho Carter, the machinist car,
00:25:01pulls up behind. The green flag.
00:25:03Now ready to go again, and here we are,
00:25:05on board with the leader of the race,
00:25:07Bobby Rahal, Arie Luyendyk is in second place,
00:25:09then Al Unser, then Rick Mears.
00:25:11Now remember, Mears and Unser did make stops.
00:25:13Emerson Fittipaldi moves up there.
00:25:15Fittipaldi, and Sullivan comes up into view.
00:25:18Look at Sullivan. Boy, oh boy.
00:25:21Now remember, some of these cars did not fall,
00:25:24but some of them were down on laps,
00:25:26and with the faster cars,
00:25:28he had to put them way back in the lineup.
00:25:30But Danny Sullivan has really come to life now.
00:25:33He's ready to go again.
00:25:35He's ready to come to life now.
00:25:37He's ready to go for it,
00:25:39because he needs that clean air to run in.
00:25:41Right now, he hasn't.
00:25:43Boy, Sullivan just out of nowhere
00:25:45to take that position.
00:25:47Rahal led back to the green,
00:25:49and then a very, very quick move there.
00:25:51The auto works 200.
00:25:53We have 35 miles complete.
00:25:55Rick Mears works his way through traffic now.
00:26:00Traffic is kind of bad.
00:26:02After we had a yellow this early in the race,
00:26:04we were all together tight.
00:26:06There's Rick moving around Jeff Wood.
00:26:08That's Michael Andretti pursuing Rick Mears.
00:26:11This is a chase for fourth place.
00:26:13Currently, Rick has it.
00:26:15You can see from Michael's onboard camera
00:26:17that's Rick running just ahead,
00:26:19and Michael seems to be closing.
00:26:21The number two Pennzoil car running alone.
00:26:23Now, let's keep in mind, too,
00:26:25that this is the standby car,
00:26:27the spare car that Michael is running.
00:26:29He wrecked his regular car in the latter part of practice,
00:26:31so he took over the spare car,
00:26:33ran just a little bit of practice in the car,
00:26:35qualified it, so he may not be quite as fast
00:26:38as it looked like it was going to be
00:26:40in his regular car today.
00:26:42Back on board, the leader of the race,
00:26:44Bobby Rahal, now thoroughly happy
00:26:46that he has Chevrolet power in that machine.
00:26:48And it seems to be proving itself for him today.
00:26:50You know, a lot of drivers
00:26:52have had problems with this course.
00:26:54Rahal is one of those.
00:26:56Remember, last year, he tangled with Bernard Jourdain.
00:26:59Many of the drivers think this can be
00:27:01a very scary racetrack.
00:27:03We had the opportunity before the race
00:27:05to ask Bobby Rahal,
00:27:07what corner is particularly bad?
00:27:09All of them.
00:27:11At the speeds we're going here,
00:27:13I think you definitely feel like
00:27:15you're going faster here at 170
00:27:17than you are at 220 at Indianapolis.
00:27:19So it might only be a mile,
00:27:21and it might only be a 175-mile-an-hour
00:27:23average speed or whatever,
00:27:25but it feels like a millionth of an hour.
00:27:27You know, and as you watch on board
00:27:29you'll see that most of the time
00:27:31he is turning. He's coming onto the main stretch now.
00:27:33Here's the main stretch going away,
00:27:35and that's all the rest that he gets.
00:27:37As here is Rick Mears
00:27:39coming up to challenge Little Al.
00:27:41This is a fight for third place.
00:27:43Ari Leyendijk remains in second
00:27:45as Mears slows down
00:27:47right behind Little Al.
00:27:49You know, at speeds of 180-miles-an-hour,
00:27:51these straightaways go by in just a short, quick time,
00:27:53so as far as the drivers are concerned,
00:27:55they're in the turns a lot more than they're in the straightaways.
00:27:57Well, that's why the chassis setup is so important.
00:27:59Oh, it really is. It's just
00:28:01awesomely important. Rick's trying to get Little Al
00:28:03captured up in the traffic right now because
00:28:05he's obviously working on a pass.
00:28:07Rick Mears is able
00:28:09to drive a little higher line
00:28:11through one and two, now comes down
00:28:13to the inside as they approach three and four.
00:28:15They have a little bit slower
00:28:17time as they come through here
00:28:19as they begin to account for traffic, but then
00:28:21they're out, they move around Dean Hall,
00:28:23and they stay in contact. That's what's
00:28:25very important. You don't want to lose track of that guy in front of you.
00:28:27No, absolutely not, and when Rick is real
00:28:29close to Little Al, he's kind of going to drive him.
00:28:31Little Al will have to drive defensively, just like
00:28:33right now. He doesn't know whether to go
00:28:35below or right above.
00:28:37And in the pits right now is the number three
00:28:39car. That is Michael Andretti.
00:28:41And this is more than routine
00:28:43because they are going to the
00:28:45calling on the back of the engine.
00:28:47While out on the track, the fight continues
00:28:49between Little Al and Rick Mears
00:28:51for third. This is a good time
00:28:53for each driver to see what the other one can do
00:28:55at this point in the race. Now, you can see Roger
00:28:57talking to Rick, giving him reports.
00:28:59Not instructions, but reports on what's going
00:29:01on. But Little Al and Rick,
00:29:03as I started to say, are feeding each other out.
00:29:05They'll probably never have a better chance than that
00:29:07right now. It may have surprised most
00:29:09people to realize that the
00:29:11two-way communications now with these
00:29:13cars, especially between Rick and
00:29:15Roger, is almost constant.
00:29:17Roger will talk to him, and
00:29:19Rick, I've listened in on that transmission
00:29:21from time to time. Rick will fall away into a corner.
00:29:23Well, he's on the prowl right now.
00:29:25It's hard for a driver to listen or
00:29:27talk in the corners, but nonetheless,
00:29:29sometimes it's necessary to do.
00:29:31Alright, let's get an update on the Porsche
00:29:33situation. Here's Gary Gervais.
00:29:35Well, seven years ago, as a rookie, Tao Fabi
00:29:37won here at Phoenix. No such luck
00:29:39today. Tao, what was the problem that put you out
00:29:41right at the green flag?
00:29:43Well, we had problems through the
00:29:45whole weekend, and something
00:29:47on the transmission broke before the green
00:29:49flag, so you couldn't even come down
00:29:51at speed to take the green flag.
00:29:53No, I was just accelerating for the
00:29:55start, and something broke, so I came in
00:29:57and was done for the day. It's been a very,
00:29:59very tough week for Tao Fabi and all
00:30:01of his hard-working crew. They'll regroup. They'll try
00:30:03to be ready for Long Beach in a couple of weeks, Paul.
00:30:05Alright, the fight continues
00:30:07between Little Al and
00:30:09Rick Mears. As they
00:30:11continue to work their way around this track,
00:30:13the fight is for third place here,
00:30:15and Rick has closed in just
00:30:17a few more inches. Of course, that's what
00:30:19the battle in racing is. Inches, played at
00:30:21hundreds of miles an hour. And at this speed,
00:30:23Paul, there is a little bit of drafting. In other
00:30:25words, Rick's getting a toe off of Little Al.
00:30:27There's no question about it. Doesn't help
00:30:29in the corners, but that little bit down the
00:30:31straightaway helps. And another thing, they want to
00:30:33save the fuel. They don't want to use any more fuel
00:30:35than they have to, so any kind of toe that Rick
00:30:37can get will help a bit. Back with the leader,
00:30:39Bobby Rahal, as just in front of him
00:30:41is the other Porsche,
00:30:43John Andretti's Porsche, the number 41
00:30:45car, and that is last
00:30:47year's model Porsche. He comes off the
00:30:49corner a little bit lower, giving Rahal
00:30:51an opportunity to duck to the inside.
00:30:53The fight continues for third place. That's Eddie
00:30:55Cheever that you got a glimpse of just a moment
00:30:57there, running in front of these cars.
00:30:59And there is the number 12 AMP car.
00:31:01That's Randy Lewis out of the RC Aero
00:31:03stable as he rolls into the pits.
00:31:05Obviously, there's some sort
00:31:07of problem. That's not a scheduled pit stop.
00:31:09You can tell the guys are working too slow.
00:31:11Now, they took it nice and easy
00:31:13as he came in.
00:31:15The fight continues for third
00:31:17place.
00:31:19Little Al continues to hold off
00:31:21Rick Mears. Now, you can
00:31:23see Rick working the high side, Little Al
00:31:25the low side. What happens, this part
00:31:27of the race is usually when the guys leak a little
00:31:29bit of fuel, a little bit of water. If the leak
00:31:31is going to happen, that's the most common time.
00:31:33Little Al has chosen the groove
00:31:35to be a little bit low when it's slippery,
00:31:37whereas Rick can jump out a little bit higher.
00:31:39That's all how the cars are set, Paul.
00:31:41Am I right in thinking that it seems
00:31:43Rick can drive about anywhere he wants? Look at this
00:31:45as he comes down the inside. He splits
00:31:47him. Wow! Yes, but Little Al
00:31:49has the groove going in, but
00:31:51you know, that's hard on the guy they're passing.
00:31:53You know, when he has two fast
00:31:55cars go by both sides at once,
00:31:57he really has to be a few ahead not to
00:31:59make a mistake at that point. They have Eddie
00:32:01Cheever lined up just in front of them
00:32:03starting on his first oval as Rick Mears
00:32:05just powers underneath Little Al.
00:32:07Can he hold the position, though?
00:32:09On the straightaway, Rick noses in
00:32:11front, picks up third. Now what
00:32:13happened there is Rick has been watching
00:32:15Little Al. Watches down there and he's got
00:32:17a little bit of dry race to run on.
00:32:19Little Al got up just a little bit
00:32:21high. Rick just grabbed that dry race
00:32:23track, went right on by it. Shows a little
00:32:25bit of planning really works there. Now you're
00:32:27on board with Little Al riding
00:32:29in fourth place. Let's get an update on the
00:32:31Michael Andretti situation. Here's Jack Arouf.
00:32:33Well, Michael Andretti was running in third
00:32:35position when he dropped out of the race. Watch out,
00:32:37Michael. The engine broke.
00:32:39A lot of disappointment here, though, this
00:32:41afternoon because you really felt you may have had the field
00:32:43handled. I really think we did. The car
00:32:45was just on rails.
00:32:47Especially in traffic. I could run
00:32:49anywhere I wanted to.
00:32:51It's just only a matter of time. I think I would have come up
00:32:53on Rick and Al Jr. I think we could
00:32:55have had them, no problem. Well, he's out
00:32:57of the race this afternoon, Paul Page, but there's a
00:32:59torrid battle back on the racetrack.
00:33:01On the track, it's still Bobby
00:33:03Rahal out in front. It's a very disappointed
00:33:05Michael walks away, and here is Ari
00:33:07Lyondyke driving for his new owner,
00:33:09Doug Shearson, in the Domino's car.
00:33:11He runs in second place right now.
00:33:13The leader of the race? Of course, it's
00:33:15Bobby Rahal. Rick Mears is third.
00:33:17Allenger Jr. is in fourth.
00:33:19Bobby Rahal has mailed the finish
00:33:21in three of the last five races here,
00:33:23but boy, he's looking better today. We'll be back.
00:33:29Back at Phoenix, Bobby Rahal leads
00:33:31with about a four-second advantage over this
00:33:33fight for second place. The red, white,
00:33:35and blue number 30, the Domino's car,
00:33:37is Ari Lyondyke, running in second.
00:33:39That's Rick Mears in the bright yellow number two,
00:33:41lined up just behind him, and looking
00:33:43for a pass. As they come
00:33:45to the backstretch, Mears moves past
00:33:47Lyondyke, and Mears picks up second
00:33:49place. Now, Mears is not really
00:33:51pushing that hard right now, but he's going
00:33:53very fast, but remember,
00:33:55Bobby Rahal's the guy's out in front.
00:33:57Here's Doug Shearson. He's really worried
00:33:59because his car isn't running in second
00:34:01place. Just got passed by Rick Mears.
00:34:03I don't know if I'd be too worried about that.
00:34:05I think it might be an honor to get dusted off
00:34:07by Mears every now and then. He has a hot
00:34:09day. Lyondyke is going good.
00:34:11He's got the new Chevrolet Power
00:34:13Paw. He's really on the move.
00:34:15He wants a good race, and if you remember,
00:34:17we've often seen him very fast here at Phoenix.
00:34:19But you have to remember, in the scheme
00:34:21of things, that Bobby Rahal, the leader
00:34:23of the race, and Ari Lyondyke, as he comes
00:34:25up alongside the Quaker State Porsche of
00:34:27John Andretti, that
00:34:29Bobby Rahal and Lyondyke have
00:34:31not yet made stops for fuel. We're
00:34:3362 miles into the race. They're probably
00:34:35within 10, 12 miles of an
00:34:37absolute mandatory stop. On the other hand,
00:34:39Rick Mears and Al Unser, Jr.,
00:34:41running in second and fourth place,
00:34:43have already made their first stop.
00:34:45So now the sequence has changed a bit.
00:34:47Of course, the idea being is, like with Rick Mears
00:34:49and Little Al, they wanted a pit
00:34:51every time they can under the yellow.
00:34:53That means that they can run longer
00:34:55for a yellow. For example,
00:34:57if a yellow catches a guy out,
00:34:59or it catches out and has to pit in the green,
00:35:01remember, they're going to lose one or more laps.
00:35:03Alright, let's get this update from Jack O'Rourke.
00:35:05Well, Paul, as you were trying to determine
00:35:07whether Ari Lyondyke would have to pit or not,
00:35:09they are setting up on pit road as
00:35:11we speak, because they felt they could only go
00:35:13about four or five laps before they have to
00:35:15bring him in on the car. Now, one of the things that
00:35:17happened to Doug Shearson and his team this weekend
00:35:19is they had a mysterious understeer problem.
00:35:21All through practice, all through qualifying,
00:35:23they only discovered a remedy to it
00:35:25in the late stages of the last practice yesterday.
00:35:27That seemed to have done the trick, and they
00:35:29are geared to go very, very well this afternoon.
00:35:31And Lyondyke slowing down just a bit
00:35:33as a whole string of cars comes past him.
00:35:35Now, remember, what's going to happen to Lyondyke,
00:35:37he's going to have to pit pretty quick.
00:35:39That's going to put him down one or two more laps.
00:35:41Now, here he comes in the pit, right now.
00:35:43That's the problem for him,
00:35:45hitting into the green when the rest of the guys get into the yellow.
00:35:47Alright, Jack O'Rourke is there and waiting
00:35:49for Ari Lyondyke. The team is
00:35:51signaling Ari Lyondyke to Scottsdale,
00:35:53Scottsdale, Arizona.
00:35:55He comes into his pit, pulls in front of his teammate.
00:35:57He comes to a stop.
00:35:59They are going to change four tires
00:36:01all the way around. Lyondyke
00:36:03is sitting in the car. Now he is taking
00:36:05on some fuel as well
00:36:07and also some liquid
00:36:09refreshment through the helmet.
00:36:11He throws it away. They're having a little bit of a problem getting
00:36:13left tire on. They have completed
00:36:15the work. They're still having a problem
00:36:17in the back of the car. They have filled. It's a long
00:36:19stop for Ari Lyondyke. He puts it back
00:36:21and he is off and away. Long indeed.

00:36:27of Jack O'Rourke's own private camera. He has a
00:36:29camera mounted on the side of his headphones
00:36:31so he can really get in close to those
00:36:33shots. Now we're back on board

00:36:43Remember, they need
00:36:45or are going to want a yellow flag
00:36:47because they need that for this shot.
00:36:49The Rahal boy, look at him
00:36:51fly well out in front. Now don't

00:37:01by Al Unser Jr. and of course he is
00:37:03definitely in the fight in this race

00:37:13And Bobby Rahal comes
00:37:15into the pit, the leader for a stop.
00:37:17Paul, an anxious
00:37:19moment. Rahal hits the mark perfectly
00:37:21but Eddie Cheever came in just seconds ahead
00:37:23and Cheever almost ducked into the wrong
00:37:25pit. They motioned him by, he
00:37:27got by cleanly, it was not a problem for
00:37:29Rahal as they change the rubber,
00:37:31they fill it up with fuel, everything appears
00:37:33to be routine. Barry Greene
00:37:35well schooled, he's in action,
00:37:37he's away, and on our clock another
00:37:3916 seconds. Pretty solid stop
00:37:41for Rahal. A great little stop,
00:37:43especially when you consider it's the first one of the
00:37:45season for the team. They're always a little
00:37:47bit more nervous on the first stop.
00:37:49They did a nice job. That's the Crick O'Gallis
00:37:51team. But Rick Mears now
00:37:53picks up the lead. Al Unser Jr. with that
00:37:55stop slides into second place and
00:37:57you can't blame Eddie Cheever too much.
00:37:59He's not accustomed to an oval, he's not
00:38:01accustomed to this kind of competition. No and
00:38:03Paul, I'll tell you, he's done a good job here.
00:38:05He's won all the practice and qualifying
00:38:07now he's had a little bit of problems but not
00:38:09considering that he came strictly towards it.
00:38:11Of course Eddie Cheever was born here
00:38:13and in fact they have declared this
00:38:15to be Eddie Cheever day as he makes his
00:38:17debut on the ovals of the Indy
00:38:19cars. Rick Mears, the Pennzoil
00:38:21number two, that bright yellow car.
00:38:23That's the leader of the race. He started
00:38:25on the pole then gave away the lead to
00:38:27Al Unser Jr. and then Bobby
00:38:29Rahal took the lead while Mears
00:38:31and little Al stopped. But Rick
00:38:33is back in front once again.
00:38:3770 miles are complete.
00:38:39200 miles the scheduled distance.

00:38:46We're back at Phoenix with a
00:38:48tremendous battle for second place.
00:38:50Al Unser Jr. has it right now but
00:38:52just behind him is Mario Andretti
00:38:54who just came around the defending
00:38:56Indy car champion. That's Emerson
00:38:58Fittipaldi. They were all lined up battling
00:39:00and Mario in that light blue and
00:39:02white car was able to move around
00:39:04Fittipaldi when I think Fittipaldi thought
00:39:06that he had little Al lined up in his sights.
00:39:08There's Teresa Fittipaldi happy with her husband's
00:39:10progress. Maybe she isn't aware that he got pushed
00:39:12back a position on the backside.
00:39:14It's hard to see from down in the pits but
00:39:16she's just praying he's going to do good.
00:39:18Of course her prayers have been answered
00:39:20before with a championship last
00:39:22season and a million dollar Indy win.
00:39:24They continue to circle this track.
00:39:26The fight is for second place. Little Al
00:39:28then Mario Andretti in the Kmart
00:39:30Haviland car and then the defending
00:39:32Indy car world champion Emerson Fittipaldi
00:39:34comes in just behind. Yes, that second,
00:39:36third and fourth places have been a
00:39:38heck of a battle there and you can bet that
00:39:40little Al knows that Mario Andretti
00:39:42has a lot of over track experience so
00:39:44he knows he's there. I'll tell you what, I think
00:39:46Mario is looking particularly good here today.
00:39:48If they were concerned about any
00:39:50turbulence on the car, it doesn't
00:39:52seem to be showing up but that's what they indicated
00:39:54before the start. You should also
00:39:56remember that he is now the only one carrying
00:39:58the colors for the Neumann-Haas team
00:40:00because Michael Andretti has fallen out
00:40:02with a broken engine. Well, that means that
00:40:04Mario is just going to work a little bit harder. It means
00:40:06that the entire team is going to be
00:40:08helping him out now. Even though they can't jump
00:40:10over the wall and do it, the support is
00:40:12going to be there for Carl Haas. The fight continues
00:40:14for second place. Mario moves
00:40:16in, continues to track little Al.
00:40:18Al takes the high line.
00:40:20Now little Al is going to watch that. When he sees
00:40:22Mario chomping away at the inside of him,
00:40:24you watch him just move down there a little bit.
00:40:31Fights for second.
00:40:33Fittipaldi comes in just a little bit
00:40:35lower on the last corner.
00:40:43Comes to one and two. The position
00:40:45remains about the same.
00:40:47But it's a three-car battle for
00:40:49second place.
00:40:53They're just settling back a little bit
00:40:55at the moment, Paul, meaning that the air,
00:40:57the disturbed air, the rough air
00:40:59hurts the cars a little bit,
00:41:01wears the tires out. So they back off,
00:41:03let their tires cool, and then they'll

00:41:23260 degrees, they're finished, and they'll
00:41:25start blistering. They're pretty close to the
00:41:27edge when they run on a hot day like this,
00:41:29on a hot track, a very tight track.

00:44:03who came in for a stop. Here's Danny's

00:44:07And Emerson Fittipaldi has been the first of the
00:44:09Penske teammates on Pit Run. Let me tell you what happened,
00:44:11Paul. He radioed in about 20 laps ago
00:44:13he'd like to go back to his qualifying tire.
00:44:15That's exactly what they put on the
00:44:17car in this setup. And he is off and away
00:44:19burning rubber.
00:44:21A 15.7 second
00:44:23stop for the defending IndyCar world champion
00:44:25Emerson Fittipaldi. One of the things I noticed
00:44:27during practice, Paul, is that
00:44:29the Penske cars, all three of them, have a
00:44:31lot less wing that they're using here.
00:44:33That may be bothering them more right now because
00:44:35the sun is beating on the track. Always makes
00:44:37it a little bit more slippery. Mario Andretti,
00:44:39car number six, the Kmart Haviland
00:44:41car, makes a routine stop
00:44:43with just one mile short
00:44:45of the halfway distance in the record book.
00:44:47And Mario Andretti with
00:44:4916 second stop rolls
00:44:51out.
00:44:53Here comes Sullivan and Mears in. The Penske
00:44:55team comes in together. Here's Jack Arood.
00:44:57Well, Rick Mears has come to a stop. They're going
00:44:59to work on him as well. Further up Pit Road,
00:45:01Dan Oliven and his team has gone to work.
00:45:03Chuck Sprague calling the shots for Danny Sullivan.
00:45:05Richard Buck calling the shots
00:45:07for Rick Mears. Mears having an incredible run
00:45:09thus far. Now they've dropped the jack on
00:45:11Mears and he is the first one off and away.
00:45:13Waiting for the completion of the work on
00:45:15Danny Sullivan's car. He, too, is away.
00:45:17Very quick teamwork on Team Penske's part.
00:45:19Well, that shows you all the
00:45:21teams operate really close. The
00:45:23cars both, I mean, Sullivan's a
00:45:25little bit quicker in, a little bit quicker out,
00:45:27but the time in the fifth about the same.
00:45:29You know, Penske, too, with this year having
00:45:31three cars on the team rather than
00:45:33the usual two, as we reach the
00:45:35halfway point, 100 miles of this
00:45:37200-mile race. They have
00:45:39a number of new people on the team
00:45:41for them to be pressured
00:45:43by a coordinated stop like that
00:45:45and respond so well shows how well they train
00:45:47those guys. Absolutely, Paul. In fact, I
00:45:49can just tell you, sometimes they practice
00:45:51every single day in the pit stop.
00:45:53Rick Gallus does the same thing
00:45:55every day in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
00:45:57Pit stop practice.
00:45:59It's fun to watch the teams as we
00:46:01get through here on ABC Sports
00:46:03because all of those guys pump
00:46:05themselves up to that stop, and they launch
00:46:07over the wall when the car comes to a
00:46:09stop. Rick Mears, now battling with
00:46:11his teammate, drops to the inside
00:46:13and tries to pass
00:46:15Danny Sullivan in that number seven machine.
00:46:17Well, you call that about a half a pass.
00:46:19Now, we just have to mention how important pit stops
00:46:21are. You figure if you could gain one
00:46:23or two seconds. There's Rick going by
00:46:25almost halfway. Another half
00:46:27pass. Yeah, another half pass.
00:46:29And if they just realize it on the green
00:46:31flag, how important it is to gain like one
00:46:33or two seconds in the pit, and how
00:46:35hard it is to gain that on the racetrack.
00:46:37Let's watch Rick Mears as he pokes
00:46:39his nose down underneath Danny Sullivan.
00:46:41But Rick doesn't see any
00:46:43necessity to really push that pass.
00:46:45No, he really doesn't. It's
00:46:47only halfway through the race right now.
00:46:49Danny is obviously really trying hard
00:46:51to keep him from passing. Alright, let's watch
00:46:53Sullivan and Mears race.
00:47:01Mears is in the leader.
00:47:03Sullivan is in seventh place.
00:47:07He's trying to stay on the leader lap.

00:47:37Paul, he has to be very careful

00:47:41to him, Sullivan was not a factor
00:47:43like him. Being careful really was a factor.

00:47:51Bobby Rahal is in second
00:47:53place. Allen Jr. runs in third.
00:47:55Emerson Fittipaldi is fourth.

00:47:59As the yellow flag comes out
00:48:01and the Horton Safety Vehicles roll
00:48:03but no indication, no obvious indication
00:48:05as to why they've gone
00:48:07yellow and sent out the safety trucks.
00:48:09But this will be an ideal opportunity
00:48:11for a number of cars.
00:48:13Yeah, there's your reason right there.
00:48:15That's Raul Boissel replacing
00:48:17Scotty Pruitt. He developed
00:48:19a problem on the course and they thought it was safer
00:48:21to go yellow. So, with 106
00:48:23miles now complete,
00:48:25Raul Rick Mears out in front of the
00:48:27AutoWorks 200.
00:48:31Back at the Phoenix 200
00:48:33under the second yellow of the day
00:48:35caused when Raul Boissel scattered
00:48:37an engine going through the fourth turn.
00:48:39He is replacing Scott Pruitt
00:48:41who was scheduled to drive
00:48:43the number 8 Budweiser TrueSports car
00:48:45but this was a couple of weeks
00:48:47ago at West Palm Beach
00:48:49when Pruitt was testing and got
00:48:51the car head on into the wall
00:48:53with a two and a half extrication.
00:48:55Pruitt was alive but shed
00:48:57his legs and feet.
00:48:59Now he is in therapy in Indianapolis, Indiana.
00:49:01He was treated by Dr. Terry Trammell
00:49:03at Methodist Hospital of Indianapolis
00:49:05and now is undergoing extensive
00:49:07therapy and hopes to be back
00:49:09racing by the beginning of next
00:49:11season. A tough piece of
00:49:13luck for Scott Pruitt. In fact,
00:49:15the entire team lined up
00:49:17and had a photograph made here today
00:49:19saying, get well soon Scotty
00:49:21and on the back of their pit stand they have a sign
00:49:23that says, get well quick scooter.
00:49:25So, we're hoping
00:49:27the best for Scotty too. And Scott, I know you're out
00:49:29there viewing and we all want you back soon.
00:49:31Here is his replacement, Raul Boissel
00:49:33and he's with Jackaroo. Well Raul,
00:49:35you had a suspension failure on the right rear
00:49:37part of the car and the engine was humming quite
00:49:39well and you were excited. You were saying you were
00:49:41closing on Rick Mears before you were put out.
00:49:43Well, I had a problem with the first set
00:49:45of tires. The one we qualified already had a problem
00:49:47yesterday but the second set was a dream.
00:49:49The car was really good. I even
00:49:51catch up Rick Mears and ready to
00:49:53overtake him when he comes to the pit.
00:49:55My car was really good balance.
00:49:57The engine is a lot better
00:49:59than last year and very good.
00:50:01You're going to hear a lot from this fellow because although
00:50:03he's replacing Scott Pruitt, he's got a lot of IndyCar
00:50:05experience, Paul.
00:50:07Raul Boissel, there is Debbie Rahal,
00:50:09Bobby's wife. Bobby currently
00:50:11runs in second place.
00:50:13She keeps track of the progress of the
00:50:15race from the scoring stand and there is her
00:50:17husband as he works his way around.
00:50:19Remember, we're under reduced speed.
00:50:21The caution flag is out but Rahal
00:50:23is in second place chasing
00:50:25the leader Rick Mears and hoping to get
00:50:27in contact with him just as soon
00:50:29as the green flag comes out.
00:50:31This yellow has given Bobby an opportunity
00:50:33to close up and at least to a point
00:50:35where he can see Rick Mears sitting
00:50:37several cars up ahead. In fact, three cars
00:50:39ahead. We're ready for the green
00:50:41flag to fly again. The PPG pace car
00:50:43comes down off the track. Bobby
00:50:45Rahal has already come up to speed
00:50:47as has Rick Mears. The green waves
00:50:49and we are racing. That is Sullivan
00:50:51just behind Rick
00:50:53Mears but remember he's off the pace
00:50:55running down one lap
00:50:57to Rick Mears. You saw Rick pass him
00:50:59just a few laps ago to put him a lap down.
00:51:01Sullivan runs in sixth right now.
00:51:03So Rick Mears is out in front
00:51:05and begins to pull away again.
00:51:07Let's take a look at the standings
00:51:09as of 100 laps.
00:51:11We're at the 112th mile right now.
00:51:13We'll look down through the entire field
00:51:15and as we do that, Bobby Unser,
00:51:17what a great day Rick is having. The defending
00:51:19champion shatters his own track record.
00:51:21It's four miles an hour faster
00:51:23than the next fastest qualifier, Al Unser
00:51:25and is back totally controlling
00:51:27this race. Oh, he does, Paul. Right after
00:51:29this yellow that happened, he's in the
00:51:31lead. He's got clean air. No
00:51:33traffic to run in whereas
00:51:35the second and third car,
00:51:37Rahal and Al Unser
00:51:39Jr. are back and they have nothing
00:51:41but traffic to run through. So Rick's really
00:51:43got a strong advantage at the moment.
00:51:45We continue to run down through the field. Of course
00:51:47these names you will now recognize as we have
00:51:49reported them out of the race.
00:51:51So the field
00:51:53away just a bit. There is the 15 car.
00:51:55That is the target machine
00:51:57of Canassie Racing and that is
00:51:59Eddie Cheever, born here in Phoenix. In fact
00:52:01he spent some time earlier in the week
00:52:03at the local hospital that he was born at.
00:52:05Spent some time with some of the children there
00:52:07and the mayor is so happy to have
00:52:09him back they've declared it Eddie Cheever
00:52:11Day today here in Phoenix.
00:52:13Of course he toiled for a decade
00:52:15in the Formula 1 cars
00:52:17and just behind him is a former
00:52:19Formula 1 champion,
00:52:21Mario Andretti as he closes up.
00:52:23Now it is not a battle for position
00:52:25because Cheever runs a lap behind Mario
00:52:27in 8th place, but Mario right now
00:52:29is in 4th. Cheever's the guy
00:52:31that I think has the best chance that we've
00:52:33looked at here in Indianapolis this year.
00:52:35That's a big deal and I'm sure
00:52:37that's what he's looking for.
00:52:39He's got some nice
00:52:41equipment because they bought
00:52:43last year's Fittipaldi
00:52:45cars from Pat Patrick. Right now
00:52:47Gary Gerald is with his owner Chip Canassie.
00:52:49Chip Canassie made the purchase
00:52:51of that Patrick's equipment and Eddie Cheever
00:52:53getting quite an education. Chip, how is
00:52:55the day going from your standpoint? A rookie
00:52:57on an oval, first time in the IndyCars
00:52:59here. He's doing a heck of a job Gary.
00:53:01Yesterday we had a little hiccup in qualifying.
00:53:03Our plan was to get him in the top 10
00:53:05maybe possibly top 5 and right now
00:53:07we're right on target. Now, he had an
00:53:09adventure on that first pit stop. He almost
00:53:11ducked into the wrong pit. Did that put your heart in your throat?
00:53:13This is his first race in America
00:53:15in a while, you know. He was mixed up on the pit
00:53:17but thank God it was okay. He did
00:53:19a good job. He recovered fast.
00:53:21What a place to learn IndyCar racing.
00:53:23Eddie Cheever is still hammering away at it here for Chip Canassie,
00:53:25Paul. Some great drivers
00:53:27have made their first run here. We certainly hope
00:53:29the best for Eddie Cheever. He is one
00:53:31of the more colorful drivers to talk to.
00:53:33He's got some great answers. We asked him once
00:53:35if he was arrogant and he said, I think we all
00:53:37are. I don't think there's any question about that.
00:53:39There has to be to be able to win. Here is another guy
00:53:41with a great ride. Poncho
00:53:43Carter in the machinist car. Now
00:53:45Poncho, in
00:53:471977, was
00:53:49testing here. During that
00:53:51test, he slammed into the
00:53:53guardrail and as a
00:53:55result of that, and look at where
00:53:57he's involved in a nice little fight as he goes around
00:53:59Scott Goodyear in the McKenzie
00:54:01number 11 car and they've got a good
00:54:03little fight going, but when he
00:54:05hit that guardrail, it actually cut
00:54:07through the race car. Poncho was terribly
00:54:09injured, involved in therapy for a very
00:54:11long time, but came back,
00:54:13scored a win at the very first Michigan
00:54:15500, and as a result of that accident,
00:54:17they took a very hard look at
00:54:19some of the safety features here and the
00:54:21pit wall now they call the Poncho wall. As a result
00:54:23of that, they replaced the guardrail with concrete.
00:54:25But look at this, as they rim
00:54:27the track, both Goodyear and Carter,
00:54:29as they run around side-by-side,
00:54:31lost. You have to say an awful lot
00:54:33about Scott Goodyear right there because Poncho
00:54:35has miles and miles
00:54:37and thousands of miles of oval track
00:54:39experience. Scott Goodyear, on the other hand,
00:54:41not so much. I think
00:54:43Scott Goodyear has to be the guy we're saying
00:54:45did a good job right there. Very
00:54:47little experience at all. A whole bunch of young
00:54:49kids. Going on against a real oval
00:54:51veteran. Poncho Carter started
00:54:5315th, now 11th
00:54:55place. Goodyear started
00:54:57in 12th and remains at the same
00:54:59position he started, but he continues
00:55:01to try to circle this track. If nothing else,
00:55:03he's going to pick up a whale of a driving lesson
00:55:05from Poncho. And remember, Poncho's one
00:55:07of the last that came up through Sprint Cars.
00:55:09Many times a Sprint Car champion.
00:55:11Won many, many, many Sprint
00:55:13Car races all over the United States.
00:55:15So he's one of the last of the old breed.
00:55:17Poncho Carter, by the way, the engines
00:55:19on this car come from
00:55:21the Machinist Union operation
00:55:23from last year where they had a more extensive
00:55:25operation. They handed him all the engines
00:55:27and said, go racing with him, have a good time.
00:55:29Poncho Carter, the number 29 car
00:55:31that's right behind him. With Scott
00:55:33Goodyear right behind him, you've got a brief glimpse
00:55:35of the leader of the race, Rick Mears,
00:55:37who's in there as well.
00:55:39There's Rick right behind,
00:55:41coming up to put another lap on those guys.
00:55:43Rick, again, has been able to pick
00:55:45and choose when he passes. Not much traffic,
00:55:47lot of clean air to run in.
00:55:49This is Rick's style. He runs
00:55:51seven seconds in front of the second
00:55:53place car, Bobby Rahal.
00:55:55Al Unser Jr. and Rahal
00:55:57have both also led this race.
00:55:59Little Al is down in third now. Mario Andretti
00:56:01sits in fourth place. And Emerson
00:56:03Fittipaldi, the defending IndyCar world
00:56:05champion, is now running in
00:56:07fifth place. Just watch Rick
00:56:09move up there, Paul. He's not making an issue out
00:56:11of anything. Roger Pinsky's
00:56:13keeping him totally abreast of what the other guys
00:56:15are doing behind him. And he's just
00:56:17picking and choosing, trying to be careful
00:56:19to make his passes really clean.
00:56:21Watch how fast, but yet how careful Rick Mears is.
00:56:23Poncho sees him and gets over out
00:56:25of the way.
00:56:33Boy, he is so smooth.
00:56:35At the same time, the fight continues
00:56:37between Goodyear and Poncho
00:56:39Carter.
00:56:41That's a pretty good pace,
00:56:43151 miles an hour for Rick.
00:56:45It's not near his qualifying speed, but you're running in
00:56:47a very hot sun, and he's running in a
00:56:49cold race setup. Well, Paul, he could
00:56:51press it harder if he had to. That's
00:56:53what the other guys better worry about a little bit,
00:56:55is Rick is kind of running this race
00:56:57on his terms. He's got a little
00:56:59bit of extra speed if he has to. I promise
00:57:01you right now, he's trying to stay
00:57:03fueled. He's just trying to keep things lined up
00:57:05to where he can win this race. Rick looks
00:57:07a lot further ahead than most of the drivers.
00:57:09Number two Pennzoil car, Rick
00:57:11Mears, out in front. He has
00:57:13a very substantial
00:57:15lead. He loves driving ovals.
00:57:17He especially likes driving here
00:57:19at Phoenix. Well, I think
00:57:21the key is being able to work
00:57:23traffic, because you're in traffic
00:57:25all day here. This particular track
00:57:27is a one-mile track, and it's faster than running.
00:57:29So being able to get the car to work
00:57:31in a wide pattern,
00:57:33to be able to run inside, outside,
00:57:35instead of having a very narrow band. You can make the car
00:57:37fast on a narrow band, but
00:57:39you're maybe better off to give up a little bit of the
00:57:41speed to get a broader band to work with.
00:57:43That's the key.
00:57:45Mears continues his lead in his
00:57:47brand new Penske car. The man
00:57:49who started on the pole, Rick
00:57:51Mears, has gone on to win 13
00:57:53times, starting from the pole.
00:57:55Can Rick Mears do it again today?
00:57:57We're about to see. We'll be back.
00:58:03We're back at the Auto Works 200 from
00:58:05Phoenix, Arizona. There are the results
00:58:07from Bristol, Tennessee, as we mentioned a few
00:58:09moments ago. Davey Allison,
00:58:11Mark Martin, Ricky Rudd, first, second, and
00:58:13third. Rick Mears is still
00:58:15well out in front. Bobby Rahal runs in
00:58:17second place, but Rahal did not
00:58:19make a stop when
00:58:21the yellow came out for Raul Boisel.
00:58:23And as a result,
00:58:25it appears that the Gallus-Preco
00:58:27team will be forced into making a
00:58:29stop under the green here very shortly.
00:58:31The crew is certainly poised
00:58:33and ready to go for that particular
00:58:35first. Should it come? Look at Rick!
00:58:37Oh! He threads himself on the main
00:58:39straightaway. Rick Mears.
00:58:41That was Dean Hall in the blue number 19
00:58:43car, and he closes now
00:58:45on the 20 car of Roberto
00:58:47Guerrero. That is the Alfa
00:58:49Romeo. Roberto sees Rick
00:58:51there and holds to the high side.
00:58:53Boy, will you ever forget the run
00:58:55Roberto Guerrero's first
00:58:57and only IndyCar win when he started
00:58:59in last place in Vince Granatelli's
00:59:01car a couple years back.
00:59:03That is still the race
00:59:05record. He charged from last place
00:59:07all the way through the field
00:59:09and finished the race in first place
00:59:11in a record time, and that record still stands
00:59:13today. And right now, the Alfa
00:59:15is new, the chassis is new,
00:59:17they haven't had much testing with it, so
00:59:19they're not having as good a day as they should.
00:59:21There's Roberto Guerrero just ahead of Bobby
00:59:23Rahal, pulls away because Rahal
00:59:25is coming down into the
00:59:27pits for his stop. Now,
00:59:29Bobby Rahal, as one of the top
00:59:31ten qualifiers for today's Phoenix 200,
00:59:33is also eligible to compete
00:59:35in a new idea this year. It's a
00:59:37pit crew competition sponsored by
00:59:39Texaco Haviland. The top ten qualifiers
00:59:41in pit stops time
00:59:43from pit entrance to pit
00:59:45exit. At the end of the race,
00:59:47the team who has accumulated the least amount of time
00:59:49on pit road will be awarded a win.
00:59:51And here comes by
00:59:53Bobby Rahal as
00:59:55Rahal rolls out of the pits
00:59:57and puts Rahal a lap down.
00:59:59Now, first place points at the end of the race,
01:00:01$5,000.
01:00:03There's a nice incentive for the crews,
01:00:05Bobby. It certainly is, especially
01:00:07when it's something that they do naturally, fast
01:00:09pit stops. All right, now,
01:00:11Bobby Rahal is out of sync. He has
01:00:13been on his pit stops because
01:00:15he ran long and kept the
01:00:17lead for quite some time and did not stop
01:00:19when Rahal Boysell came in.
01:00:21So as a result of that, he's forced
01:00:23to stop under the green, and Rick
01:00:25Mears is able to get past and put him a lap down.
01:00:27You saw
01:00:29Roger Pinsky talking to Rick there.
01:00:31He's telling him, obviously, that he should
01:00:33put a lap on Rahal. Now,
01:00:35Pinsky needs a yellow flag.
01:00:37That would almost, without mechanical
01:00:39problems, guarantee his win here today.
01:00:41At that stop, Bobby Rahal drops down
01:00:43to fifth place and a lap behind the leader.
01:00:45Top of the order is now Rick Mears,
01:00:47Allenser Jr., Mario Adretti,
01:00:49and Emerson Fittipaldi. There is
01:00:51little Al,
01:00:53Mario, and Fittipaldi.
01:00:55Second, third, fourth, lined up right together.
01:00:59This is a fight for second place.
01:01:01Second, third, fourth, running together
01:01:03on the racetrack. It's been a good race
01:01:05all day for second place and on the back.
01:01:07Second, third, and fourth has been hard all day.
01:01:09And when you talk about the tactics
01:01:11as we watch this battle for a second,
01:01:13Rahal stopped
01:01:15on the 141st lap. That
01:01:17should mean, Bobby, that he will not have to
01:01:19stop again. The others at the
01:01:21front of the order will. Yes, they will,
01:01:23but remember, they're gambling that
01:01:25there could be a yellow right now. If somebody
01:01:27were to have a wreck or somebody dropped something
01:01:29oil or whatever on the track,
01:01:31hey, it would really put little Al
01:01:33up with Rick Mears. Good.
01:01:35It would put Rahal down a lap, so you have
01:01:37to watch this race really close
01:01:39to the yellow flag. It really makes a difference.
01:01:41...through traffic alongside Didier

01:02:09last year's model Porsche. Right. That's what
01:02:11I started to say, Paul. This is the one that Tao drove
01:02:13last year, and at the end of the year
01:02:15the car was getting quite fast.
01:02:17In fact, at times we thought maybe
01:02:19it was the fastest car in the whole field.
01:02:21Back at the front of the field, this
01:02:23is the fight for second place as Mario Andretti
01:02:25continues to chase Little Al.
01:02:27Well, he is chasing him.
01:02:29He's been chasing all day. Mario's been very fast.
01:02:31Little Al's been fast.
01:02:33None of the crowd's going to have any complaints all day
01:02:35about second place on the back.

01:02:55see how close Little Al, look at how
01:02:57close he gets to the walls there. Look right
01:02:59down to the white line. Watch this.
01:03:01If he touches it again, watch him come out.

01:03:05Looks like he's going to hit the wall.
01:03:07He knows where the car's going to go. Would you keep
01:03:09your eyes open there?
01:03:24And he will turn one.
01:03:37Riggers is still the leader of the race.
01:03:39Let's get an update on him here.
01:03:41Paul, we've got a yellow just as we were going to talk to
01:03:43Richard Buck, and that is a break
01:03:45for Team Penske. Now, what they were
01:03:47going to try and do is run the string
01:03:49as long as they could to put as many
01:03:51people as they could. There's the reason for the yellow.
01:03:53That's Guerrero as he got up
01:03:55against the wall coming off of one.
01:03:57Now,
01:03:59they brought the yellow out,
01:04:01and the yellow was for debris. No indication
01:04:03as to where they were calling the yellow
01:04:05for debris, and then Guerrero
01:04:07spun in the Miller Genuine Draft Car
01:04:09and put it up against the wall
01:04:11just off of turn one. Now, remember, Paul,
01:04:13what we talked about the game plan.
01:04:15This is going to totally change the race.
01:04:17The whole concept of the race now is changing.
01:04:19Rick Mears is coming in right now for his
01:04:21last pit stop. Vittipaldi is already
01:04:23in. Mario Andretti is in.
01:04:25He's going to put Rahal down a lap. That's going to be
01:04:27a very important thing. It's going to change the whole
01:04:29thing now. This is what all of the leaders
01:04:31it was suggested were waiting for.
01:04:33They hoped for a yellow that would put
01:04:35them within running distance.
01:04:37With now just 50 miles to go,
01:04:39that's exactly what's happened.
01:04:41And Rick Mears, see those white things? Those are the
01:04:43labels. He's going out on tires
01:04:45that are brand new. And he's going to
01:04:47have laps under the yellow. With the accident
01:04:49of Roberto down the turn, Rick
01:04:51is going to strut these tires.
01:04:53And he's going to go for brand new
01:04:55ones because, number one, he's got a heck
01:04:57of an advantage. He'll start in clean air,
01:04:59no traffic. So he'll be all right, Paul.
01:05:01So the brakes come for the
01:05:03Penske team as Rick Mears
01:05:05rolls back onto the course into the yellow.

01:09:24went on to win the Indianapolis

01:09:32Right now, Rick is controlling this race
01:09:34completely. He really has
01:09:36all day. He's been the
01:09:38dominant force as we've watched.
01:09:40He's been a good speaking race driver.
01:09:42He's definitely been fast. Little Al
01:09:44seems to be pretty fast early on with him
01:09:46but virtually he's been untouchable.
01:09:48There he comes up behind Eddie
01:09:50Cheever. Again, I think he's done a
01:09:52remarkable job today. Rick Mears
01:09:54comes up behind the former Formula 1
01:09:56driver, Eddie Cheever, now making his fortunes
01:09:58in the Indy cars. And when
01:10:00Rick goes around Eddie, as
01:10:02we expect him to do quite cleanly,

01:10:08education. He won't be able to stay

01:13:02up behind Bobby Rahal and Alexander Jr. He's overhauling the field again.
01:13:10He should be able to get by pretty easy, but remember, that's going to change the way they
01:13:15do their racing for the rest of the race. We still have about 30 laps left to go, Paul.
01:13:20In this style, Rick Mears may be changing the way they do the rest of the year.

01:13:36Back to the fight for second as Rick Mears lined up just behind him.
01:13:42Rick Mears has dominated this race on board with the third-place car, Bobby Rahal.
01:13:47That's Alexander Jr. just ahead, but they're doing everything they can to hold off Rick Mears
01:13:51coming up through the back. 170 miles complete.
01:13:55Back at the Auto Works 200 in Phoenix, Rick Mears in the Pennzoil car is the dominating
01:14:20factor, well out in front, and trying to pass and put the place car of Bobby Rahal
01:14:25a lap down. Jack Arood has this report.
01:14:27Paul, race traffic can play such a critical role here. Despite the fact that Rick Mears
01:14:31has such a commanding lead in this race, they've radioed in and told him from the pits to go
01:14:35nice and slow. Watch the race traffic. They are very concerned about that.
01:14:39Meanwhile, a little further up in Team Penske, Emerson Fittipaldi has been without benefit
01:14:43of radios for the last 25 laps, so he's flying blind out there.
01:14:48Fittipaldi runs in fifth place, one lap behind the leader, Roger Penske, who stays in contact
01:14:53with Rick Mears. The number 50 car, that's the Euro Motorsports car, Guido Dacco, in
01:14:58his second start here. Best finish, as you see, was 24th at Phoenix last year, and he
01:15:03is now running in 11th place. If he can move up a position, he will equal his best finish
01:15:09ever. Guido Dacco scored a tenth as his best finish, so let's see how Guido's doing.
01:15:17This is Dale Coyne's car. Dale was an IndyCar racer for a time, and then went over to ownership
01:15:23positions. One of the guys that brought stock blocks in, and has tried very hard to make
01:15:28it with a normally aspirated stock block, but not much luck with it, Moe. I'm sorry,
01:15:32I said Coyne. This is Antonio Ferrari's car. It is Dean Hall that's in the Coyne machine.
01:15:38Driver turned owner, as did Chip Ganassi. New ride with Lil' Al Allen for Junior, second
01:15:45place. Bobby Rayhall just behind him. Rick Mears, the dominant factor here at Phoenix.
01:15:53There comes, the yellow flag comes out. Report is, debris on the track once again. Down in
01:16:01turn one, they say there's a large bolt that has dropped off of one of the machines, so
01:16:06they have to put out the yellow. That'll slow the race at the 182nd mile. Rick Mears will
01:16:11stay the leader. Roger Penske looks on. We'll be back.
01:16:21We're back live at Phoenix International Raceway, the AutoWorks 200, as we look down from the
01:16:25hills that overlook this scenic little historic track of the IndyCars. I'm Paul Page with
01:16:30Bobby Unser, Jack Arute, and Gary Gerald. Rick Mears is dominating this race, but under
01:16:35this yellow for debris, Al Unser Jr. has moved up along with Bobby Rayhall to join Rick on
01:16:40the same lap. Mario Andretti runs in fourth place. He is a lap down, followed by Fittipaldi,
01:16:46Danny Sullivan, and then Eddie Cheever. Let's go down to the Rick Gallus pits. Here's Gary
01:16:50Gerald. Rick Gallus is calling the shots. You're about out of time, but this yellow
01:16:54gets you back. You were on the same lap. Can you make up the difference? Mears is awful
01:16:58fast, Gary, so we're going to try. That's what we're here for. Al's driving a good,
01:17:04strong race. I think Mears just got a handle on us today. You got out of sequence in the
01:17:09two teams taking stops at different times to get us all worked out seemingly perfectly.
01:17:13Yeah, you know, Barry and I agreed before we started that he'd do his thing and I'd
01:17:16do mine, and so, you know, we went the little bit conservative way. The way it works, that
01:17:21didn't matter. Well, the chemistry for a new team seems to be working well, Paul, second
01:17:25and third at the moment. Well, when they come back with the green, they'll have 13 miles
01:17:30to go, kind of like running the A main here, a little sprint to the finish. We go all this
01:17:34distance, then it's going to line up into a sprint. Now, as a result of the way they've
01:17:38lined up behind the pace car, Rick Mears is directly behind the pace car. And then
01:17:44there's a whole string of cars. Of 12 cars separate Rick Mears. You can see him there.
01:17:54He's that bright yellow Pennzoil machine. And then well back is Al Unser Jr. Remember,
01:18:01when the pace car picked Rick Mears up, while all the other cars kind of got like a free
01:18:06lap, they were able to go all the way back around. So that's the reason they're bunched
01:18:09up right now behind Rick. Let's go to the pits. Here's Jack. Well, Richard Buck, you've
01:18:14been on the radio through this caution advising Rick Mears to be very cautious on this car.
01:18:18Yeah, correct. We've got a clean track ahead of us, and the rest of the runners, Al Unser
01:18:23Jr. And Ray Hall are going to have to come up through the field. They'll probably be
01:18:26risking it quite a bit. So with a clean air, too, our car's running real good. I think
01:18:31we should cross our fingers at this point. Paul? All right. You heard the call that the
01:18:37green will come out. As the pace car has already begun to accelerate, Rick picks up the speed
01:18:43in the fourth turn. Chris Mears on the radio listening to the team, listening to Rick.
01:18:50As the green flag flies with 13 miles to go to the finish of the Autowork 200. Now 12
01:18:56as he flashes across the line. Keep in mind, the race is really going to be for second
01:19:01and third. Rick is way out of the lead as we can see. No traffic, good clean air, but
01:19:06Bobby Ray Hall and little Al. Looking way back through to pick up little Al and Bobby
01:19:13Ray Hall as they try to stretch their way through and deal with traffic in front of
01:19:18them. Remember, they had to have all this traffic because everybody went around getting
01:19:22almost a lap because of the yellow flag. Rick got the pace car. Now they're really
01:19:27going to have the traffic around, too. It's going to make it a super race. 15 car, the
01:19:31Cheever car is just ahead as Ray Hall works his way around. And little Al comes in there
01:19:37as the two of them continue to fight. Advantage went to Ray Hall there for the moment. Yes,
01:19:41Ray Hall passing. That's what the traffic does. That's what we're talking about. When
01:19:45you get behind all that traffic, the guy in the front is at a little bit of a disadvantage.
01:19:49The guy behind can do a little bit of planning. That's what Ray Hall just did. The other thing
01:19:54that you have to assure yourself of when you're coming up with just ten laps to go is that
01:19:59if one of the guys is passing to one side, if we're the other fellow about to make a
01:20:03pass, Bobby, you've got to make sure that the guy saw both of you. That's so true, Paul.
01:20:07And remember, the dirty air versus the clean air. If little Al could catch Ray Hall's traffic
01:20:12right now, he'd really be happy, but I don't think it's going to be there. One car just
01:20:16ahead. The battle is for second place between Al Unser Jr. And Bobby Ray Hall. Rick Mears
01:20:23has just dominated this race. Rick is going for career win number 27. If, in fact, he
01:20:30scores it, that will tie him with Johnny Rutherford for fifth place on the all-time win list.
01:20:36Ray Hall in second place. Debbie Ray Hall watches from their pit-scoring position. Everything
01:20:42came down to Bobby Ray Hall and little Al. One chance that Ray Hall had. He had to catch
01:20:47little Al in that traffic. He did. He really took advantage of it. Little Al's saying right
01:20:52now, boy, I wish I'd get him in the same situation. Seven miles to go to the end of the race.
01:20:57Rick Mears still in front. Still a fight for second place as Al Unser Jr. tries to catch
01:21:03Bobby Ray Hall and closes the distance up just a bit. I know, but, Paul, there's not
01:21:07many laps. Seven laps coming up on six to go. There's Rick Mears. Clean, no traffic,
01:21:12nothing. Without any problems, he should be good. Rick Mears is about ten seconds out
01:21:17in front of second place Bobby Ray Hall. It looks like a long way, but it's only two seconds
01:21:22back from Ray Hall to Al Unser Jr. It's a long way, but you can see they're running.
01:21:33Well, look how smooth. Mears can place that car just anywhere he wants. He comes into
01:21:37traffic. Scotty Brayton, the Amway car just ahead. Here's where he has to be careful.
01:21:42Anytime he encounters other cars. That's right. It may not be something Rick does wrong. It
01:21:46may be something, maybe a mechanical failure from one of the other cars. He has to worry
01:21:50about all of that because he is so close to winning this race. He really has more worries
01:21:55than anybody else in the race at the moment because of that. They look at the computer
01:22:03on the scoring stand. Bobby Ray Hall works his way around trying to hold off Al Unser
01:22:12Jr. Rick Mears, the winningest driver of the 80s, is going to start the decade of the 90s.
01:22:21Yet another oval win. Very soon, he will be approaching the record of A.J. Foyt. He still
01:22:29has to handle up the all-time record of Mario Andretti first, and Mario and Foyt are both
01:22:35still very active. We heard A.J. Foyt earlier in this race say, I'm still here. I'm back
01:22:41and look out. He is very much. He's been very fast all day. Mario's a long ways from getting
01:22:47wiped out. Very good race car. Michael, if anything, he's a little bit better. You know,
01:22:53it seems that for ten years we've been asking A.J. when he's going to slow down, and he's
01:22:57not showing any sign of it at all. Rick Mears, the Penske creation, a PC90, new designation
01:23:03for the Penske car. Rick Mears looking for career win number 27. He won the last race
01:23:09of last year on the road course at Laguna Seca. And a flag flies a mere mile to go for
01:23:15Rick Mears now. Will he score another win? He won here in 1982 and last year on the back
01:23:22stretch. Unchallenged. Very little lies between Mears and the checkered flag now. The Penns
01:23:32oil car works its way off of the fourth turn. Nick Penorio, the starter, has twin checkered
01:23:37flags, and Rick Mears has scored the first win of the 90s. Now the fight for second place
01:23:42as it comes to the line, and Bobby Rayhall holds off the charge of Allender Jr. So Rayhall
01:23:48finishes in second, Allender Jr. About three seconds back in third place. There's little
01:23:53Al. You're on board as he slows down at the conclusion of the race. Margin of victory
01:23:58for Rick Mears, 7.26 seconds. An incredible run for Rick, but at 126 miles an hour, he
01:24:07does not approach Roberto Guerrero's track record. We'll be back to talk with the winner
01:24:12of the Auto Works 200, Rick Mears, right after this.
01:24:26Well, Rick Mears is the victor here. Bobby Rayhall finishes second. Allender Jr., Mario
01:24:31Andretti, and Emerson Fittipaldi. And Rick Mears, congratulations.
01:24:34Thank you very much. I tell you, these guys did a tremendous job with that motor change
01:24:38last night, buttoned everything right back up, and the car ran great all day long. I
01:24:41never missed a beat.
01:24:42Tell you what, these 4 a.m. wake-up calls, that might be what you need to do at Indianapolis
01:24:45this year.
01:24:46I think it gets the blood pumping a little bit or something early and getting going,
01:24:49but I tell you, the Chevrolet just ran great all day long, just ran strong.
01:24:52Now, Bobby Unser and Paul Page said at the outset of this telecast that you can learn
01:24:56a lot about Indianapolis and the 500 here running at Phoenix. Did you learn anything
01:25:00today that you can take to the brickyard?
01:25:02Well, I think, you know, really the key and the thing you're really looking for in the
01:25:05first race is reliability, and that showed today. I mean, the car just never missed a
01:25:09beat, and we had a pretty good balance. It stayed fairly consistent, didn't change much
01:25:12throughout the day. We could play with it a little, so hopefully it'll repeat in that
01:25:16respect.
01:25:17Another driver that's extremely happy with his finishing position today is with our Gary
01:25:20Gerald. Gary?
01:25:24The opportunity to have drivers as elated to be second and third, but the new teammates,
01:25:28Ray Hall and Unser, terrific drive. Bobby, let's start with you. Chevrolet power, number
01:25:33two, so close to coming to victory lane.
01:25:35That's nice. We got a little bit out of sequence. I stayed out, and, you know, I caught up to
01:25:39Rick, but then I had to stop for fuel, and, you know, he was hooked up, and, you know,
01:25:43we got a, you know, on a restart like that with so many cars, it's a crap shoot, and
01:25:48unfortunately for Al, he just picked the wrong lane, but we both ran hard. It was a good
01:25:53race for us.
01:25:54Teammate got by you right at the end. Was that a major disappointment for you and your
01:25:57squad?
01:25:58No way. I think, you know, for Dallas-Greco team, I think it's great. You know, if you
01:26:04took the team points, we'd be leading it right now, so it's good. It's, you know, I want
01:26:09to thank Valvoline and Ray Kim and STP and everybody. They did their, all their support
01:26:14really helped us, and I want to thank my team because they did a super job.
