00:00Has Brexit been a success?
00:03Some of it has been a success, but a lot of it has not,
00:07because we are still too scared to take advantage of the opportunities.
00:12There is no point leaving the European Union
00:15if we just continue doing what the EU is doing.
00:18That is what I fought for when I was business and trade secretary.
00:21Signing trade deals, yes, cooperating with countries across the world, yes,
00:25but also looking at how we could have smarter regulation,
00:28looking at how we could compete better than our nearest neighbours.
00:32Being a competitive economy is one of the things that will help us grow.
00:36One of the reasons why Brexit has not been as much of a success as it should be
00:40is because we did not start with a plan, as I said.
00:43But the other reason that people think that it has created problems
00:46is because everything now is blamed on Brexit.
00:49When I travelled all around the world, I saw the same issues that we have here everywhere.
00:53In Australia, in Japan, in the US, in Canada, in Mexico,
00:57they all had issues with inflation.
01:00They all had issues with energy.
01:02They all had issues with mass migration.
01:04Italy, the island of Lampedusa, had more people on it arriving on small boats
01:09than residents living on that island.
01:11I was there two days after that happened.
01:13None of these problems are due to Brexit.
01:15We need to stop blaming Brexit for our problems.
01:17We need to stop blaming the EU or international agreements
01:20and start fixing problems here ourselves.
