00:00Hi, I'm Dr. Andrew Lawson. I'm an online GCSE Enabled Tutor. Here's my 5 tips for anyone thinking of homeschooling.
00:07First, create a dedicated learning space. You don't need anything fancy, but a specific area for school work will quickly get you both in the right mindset.
00:16Keep it organised and stocked with all the supplies you need.
00:20Secondly, establish a routine. Set regular start, finish and break times so they know what to expect and you get a break as teaching can be tiring.
00:30Having a routine is just going to make learning smoother.
00:33Third, choose your curriculum. So download the specification for your exam board so you can see what you have to cover.
00:40Then you can find methods that fit both your child's learning style and your teaching style and don't be afraid to experiment.
00:47Fourth, connect with other homeschooling families through online groups, local co-ops, support networks.
00:54You'll be able to share advice and resources and also arrange social activities for your kids.
01:00Please don't neglect the social development of your child. You don't have to and you probably shouldn't do this alone.
01:06Feel free to contact me for free advice if you want.
01:09Fifth, be patient and flexible. Every child learns at their own pace and some days are going to feel harder than others.
01:17If either of you need time off, illness for example, a big plus for homeschooling is you can work a missed week or two in the holidays to catch up.
01:25I would do this over Easter, summer and Christmas over half terms because you need regular four-week breaks.
01:32Finally, please give yourself credit from day one. What you're doing is amazing.
01:38If things are hard at first, keep going. It will get easier. I still remember my first lesson and I was really scared.
01:46Homeschooling can be an amazing journey for everyone. With some preparation and patience and determination,
01:52you can create an amazing learning experience right from your home.
01:55Thanks for watching and good luck!
