Part 2 of 6 of the 1985 thriller. Frances Carr and her daughter Clare are kidnapped by the IRA in a ambush that leaves the chauffeur dead. As her husband Geoffrey is left bewildered by what happens next as the authorities try and work out who has her and why, a clue may come from a young boy who witnessed the kidnapping. 01:00Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome aboard Aer Lingus flight EI153 to Dublin.
01:20Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts and observe the no smoking sign. Thank you.
01:50Please stand by, Lucy.
02:17Simon.
02:19Dear God, who's on his way home, anyone?
02:25Paul is on the extortion in Brazil and Peter and John are negotiating the kidnap ransoms in Italy.
02:32Peter will be back on Wednesday.
02:35Get Simon to meet me here as soon as possible.
02:39Aer Lingus announces the arrival of flight EI153 from London Heathrow.
03:08Mr. Carr, Mr. Carr.
03:26Any idea who did it, Mr. Carr?
03:40I'm sorry, I don't have anything to say at the moment, but there will be a statement, I promise you.
03:44Carr is insured.
03:59Took out a kidnap and ransom policy when he traveled in South America and half the world's business executives are in people's prisons.
04:06Boom period.
04:08Silly fellow didn't tell us that he'd moved to Ireland, acquired a family, small details like that.
04:13Does that affect the policy?
04:15Technically, but the underwriters will fork out.
04:21How are things on the home front?
04:25We've separated.
04:27I've moved out.
04:29Access?
04:30Weren't you afraid to see my son twice a week?
04:34Good.
04:38Italy wasn't about the home front.
04:42The hostage had a heart attack and died while the ransom was being paid.
04:46Well, it's a moot point.
04:47How long you've been dead, Simon.
04:49Underwriters do wince a little when a large sum of money is paid out for a corpse.
04:53I did a proof of life for...
04:54Water under the bridge, Simon.
04:57All I'm saying is that it would be a bit bloody silly if I were to send you over there to save someone's wife when all you could think about was saving your marriage.
05:04There's nothing left to save, sir.
05:09Good.
05:13Packed your toothbrush?
05:14Yes.
05:15He has all you need to know.
05:17Has Carbon contacted?
05:19He will be. He's en route.
05:22I'm the only man in my set whose marriage is still intact.
05:26No particular reason for it.
05:30Well, I'm sorry it's Ireland.
05:32Hope you have a good Mac.
05:34That's a lousy four car.
06:05Superphone?
06:07Ah!
06:09Inspector Carney.
06:10Oh, Harry.
06:11I was just asking.
06:12You've got straight from Dublin, miss.
06:15Anything new?
06:16Well, the astrologer says they're in Newark.
06:20No prince.
06:22Except for a family chauffeur.
06:25And a few more.
06:26And a few more.
06:27And a few more.
06:28And a few more.
06:29And a few more.
06:30And a few more.
06:31And a few more.
06:32And a few more.
06:33And a few more.
06:34A family chauffeur!
06:35One bullet was recovered!
06:38Mm-hm.
06:40About 9 million.
06:48Yes, we'll have to find the poor lady's quick.
06:51Otherwise my son will never forgive me.
06:55We were going on holiday this week.
06:58They know all that about these fellas, don't they?
07:14How much time did they have before the body was discovered?
07:17Two hours.
07:18Perhaps a little more.
07:19They just might have made the border before the alarm went out.
07:22Not at all.
07:23They wouldn't bank on that.
07:24I bet they're still in the south.
07:26Then two shots.
07:27And then there was another two shots.
07:29Four shots.
07:30Right.
07:31A white hostess.
07:32There was no shot.
07:33It was a snappier, whippier type of sound.
07:36Sergeant, take that man's statement.
07:38Right, sir.
07:39This way, please.
07:46Car.
07:47So we'll tell her to handle it.
07:55It is the IRA.
07:57Both the provost and the INLA have already denied involvement.
08:01Does that mean anything?
08:03Yes.
08:06Then it's a straightforward kidnap for money.
08:11Might be.
08:12Breakaway group.
08:13Cowboys.
08:14Criminals.
08:15Same difference.
08:16If anyone approaches you, you get in touch with us immediately.
08:22This is a direct line.
08:26They may threaten to harm your wife and daughter
08:28if you tell the police.
08:29By harm, you mean kill.
08:31They'll be bluffing, Mr. Carr.
08:33They're not going to kill someone who's worth money to them.
08:38I'll bear that in mind.
08:56I'm sorry, Mr. Carr,
08:58but I have to make you realise the kind of people you're dealing with.
09:02If you do pay a ransom,
09:04there's absolutely no guarantee they'll honour the deal.
09:09And if I don't pay?
09:10Negotiate.
09:11Talk money.
09:12But don't agree to do anything until you come back to us first.
09:15You must trust us, Mr. Carr.
09:17We'll do anything.
09:18We'll do anything.
09:19We'll do anything.
09:20We'll do anything.
09:21We'll do anything.
09:22We'll do anything.
09:23You must trust us, Mr. Carr.
09:25We're not going to go blundering away in there.
09:28We want to get your wife and child back safely to you.
09:33But we want to get them too.
09:53I don't know what you're talking about.
09:56I'm not talking about you.
09:58I'm not talking about you.
10:00I'm not talking about you.
10:02I'm not talking about you.
10:04I'm not talking about you.
10:06I'm not talking about you.
10:08I'm not talking about you.
10:10I'm not talking about you.
10:12I'm not talking about you.
10:14I'm not talking about you.
10:16I'm not talking about you.
10:18I'm not talking about you.
10:20Where's my daughter?
10:29Please, what have you done with her?
10:31She's 12.
10:3312.
10:35She will be terrified.
10:37Let me see her.
10:39You've got to let me see her.
10:41Why won't you answer me?
10:43Let me see her.
10:45Please.
10:47Let me see her!
10:49Please, let me see her!
11:06Do you like my holiday clothes?
11:08Don't miss Lockheed Forest Park. A must for nature trailers.
11:20You'll get used to it.
11:24What do you mean?
11:26Don't let her upset you.
11:28Bitch doesn't upset me! It was the boy!
11:32We were clear, it was perfect!
11:34You should have done something about the boy!
11:36I don't shoot children or civilians.
11:40What about her? The girl?
11:42They're different.
11:44How different?
11:46Of course they're different!
11:48They're responsible for the soldiers in the north and the shit state down here.
12:06The boy, what did he see?
12:14He caught a glimpse across a field.
12:18A glimpse?
12:26I am not known, but you are.
12:30We have got to do something about him, Frank.
12:36Come on, kids, move along.
13:02Kevin! Kevin!
13:04Kevin!
13:06Who did it, Kevin? Was it the Martians?
13:08Did you see them do it?
13:10Come on out, Kev.
13:12Kevin's in bed, and that's where you should be.
13:22He was a hero of Wicklow.
13:24C Company, 6th Battalion.
13:28He shot the Brits.
13:30He did.
13:32Indeed, he did.
13:34They all came to bury him.
13:36Tom Barry, Dan Breen, Ernie O'Malley.
13:40And it's still going on, you see.
13:44It'll go on, he used to say, till Ireland is all one, sea to sea.
13:58You saw nothing.
14:02Do you hear me?
14:04He knows everything.
14:08If you open your mouth, he'll tell me.
14:12You wouldn't want him coming up there at the grave to tell me now, would you?
14:20Mother, I've told the police we heard and saw nothing.
14:24Now will you leave the boy alone?
14:26He's had enough.
14:32How's the girl?
14:34Not too happy.
14:36She's coughing as if she's never going to stop.
14:38Maybe we should bring her here.
14:40No.
14:42Willie's with her.
14:44If the guards find one house, we still have the other hostages to bargain with.
14:46That makes sense.
14:48What about the boy?
14:50The guards will have him.
14:52That won't block him up, will it?
14:54Find out what's happening, Ronan.
14:56Put pressure on the family.
14:58If it looks bad, lift him.
15:00On my own?
15:02Take your driver, pal, in Dundalk.
15:04Martin, he won't pay him.
15:08Go now.
15:10Don't harm the boy.
15:12What about the guards?
15:14Take the arm and leg.
15:18We're sitting on two million.
15:20Quit here, Ronan.
15:30The press, master.
15:34However I put this, it's going to sound inappropriate.
15:38But these events are bound to have repercussions on the company.
15:44If you can issue a statement...
15:46I do not care nor wish to talk about the company.
15:48Frequently what I feel myself, but...
16:00They're on my land.
16:02I told them, master.
16:14Have you had any approaches from the kidnappers, Mr. Carr?
16:18Have the police any ideas?
16:20Are you politically involved at all, Mr. Carr?
16:22Have you got anything to say to the kidnappers, sir?
16:26Anything to say?
16:30Tell them, uh...
16:32Please not to harm my wife and daughter.
16:38Do you have any message for them, sir?
16:40In case your wife sees the paper.
16:42Just, I love you.
16:48What about your company, Mr. Carr?
16:50Will you be selling shirts?
16:52Can't you see what Mr. Carr is going through?
16:58Friends, press, lunatics.
17:06The whole matter is extremely delicate and I just suggest we all go home now.
17:10You had pictures of him arriving and that's quite enough, I would have thought.
17:14I've got more retreatment.
17:16She'll put anything important through to her study.
17:20Come on.
17:40Come on.
18:10Moira's filtering them.
18:12Have the vultures gone?
18:14Settle in the trees.
18:16Eat something, Geoffrey.
18:22I'm worried someone will speculate.
18:24How ridiculous.
18:26What?
18:30What?
18:32What's ridiculous?
18:34Oh, uh, what I said out there.
18:38I love you.
18:40I love you.
18:42I love you.
18:44I love you.
18:46I love you.
18:48I love you.
18:50I love you.
18:52I love you.
18:54I love you.
18:56I love you.
18:58So I've never said it to her.
19:00I've never said it to anyone before tonight.
19:04And then I didn't say it to anyone.
19:06Eat something, Geoffrey.
19:10Then drink something.
19:14I didn't really drink until I came to Ireland.
19:16Good place to learn.
19:18Yes.
19:24Isn't this Prost and Whiskey?
19:26It is. I have my confession tomorrow.
19:29PHONE RINGS
19:33Geoffrey Carr.
19:35It's Stephen Bennett, Mr Carr, 1T.
19:37We met while you were on a South American licensing trip.
19:40Security aspects?
19:42Oh, yes, yes.
19:44Do you remember the procedure?
19:46The pro... Um...
19:48Yes.
19:50Our man will be in La Paz tomorrow.
19:53La Paz?
19:55Very sound, reliable...
19:57Oh, good, good.
19:59I'm deeply sorry to hear of your present misfortune
20:01and hope our matter reaches a satisfactory conclusion.
20:05Goodbye.
20:10Bloody insurance man.
20:22MUSIC PLAYS ON RADIO
20:41How's the girl?
20:43Asleep.
20:45Give her some of these.
20:49Drink it.
20:53I said drink it, not lick it.
21:00Jesus Christ almighty, the woman's got the taste at last.
21:06It's going wrong.
21:08Will you stop saying that?
21:12You mean it's not going as you planned it?
21:16Nothing ever does.
21:19Kid.
21:21Draw the curtains.
21:27Jeffrey Carr appeals to the kidnappers.
21:29Radio 2 News with Brian Byrne.
21:36Jeffrey Carr, whose wife and child were abducted from a car
21:39after their chauffeur was shot near Octocloy, County Wicklow,
21:42today appealed to the kidnappers.
21:45Tell them, er, please not to harm my wife and daughter.
21:51Do you have any message for them, sir?
21:53In case your wife sees the paper.
21:55Just, I love you.
21:57In Cork, it was reported that the parking disk system tied up...
22:01We've done it.
22:03When you hear it on there, you know you've done it.
22:06Jesus, this'll make those bastards in Derry set up.
22:10We've got a wee job for you here, Frank.
22:12Just do what you're told, Frank.
22:15Here, you're slitting, Frank.
22:17Five years in the cash, Frank.
22:19Sure, everybody does it.
22:21It's a qualification.
22:23It's good for the soul, Frank.
22:26Get your picture in the Republican News.
22:29A wee something for the grandchildren, you know what I mean?
22:32Did you hear that?
22:34Easy, easy. Easy.
22:37Didn't I tell you?
22:39Well, didn't I tell you, eh?
22:41We'll have the money in a week.
22:45Go on. Admit I was right.
22:48Go on. Admit it.
22:50Don't be so bloody grudging.
22:52No, don't.
22:54No, you idiot.
22:56Stop.
22:58Stop!
23:10You think you're God's gift.
23:20Sorry, sir.
23:22With the phone going, those press people...
23:24Leave it.
23:26It won't take a minute. No, leave it.
23:30Look, I said leave it!
23:32Leave everything.
23:34I want this room left exactly as it is until Mrs Carr returns.
23:37Do you understand?
23:42I'm sorry.
23:49Where will you be sleeping? Here.
23:56Here.
24:21I don't know.
24:23What?
24:26Oh, well, it doesn't matter.
24:28Does it?
24:30Does it?
24:55Hello?
25:22Hello?
25:24Yes?
25:30How do I know you have them?
25:33I can't raise any money by...
25:41You must prove to me that you've got...
25:43In 40 seconds I'm putting this phone down, Mr Carr.
25:46Be in the phone box in Drumley Gee at 11 o'clock, alone.
25:52Drum...
25:54Drumley Gee, Kildare.
25:56The money must be in used fives and tens.
25:58One word to the police and they'll be shot.
26:01You get nothing.
26:03Unless you ask her a question.
26:06Ask her...
26:08What is her sister's name?
26:10Her married name.
26:12No, no, ask her...
26:14Hello?
26:16Hello?
26:18Hello, hello?
26:20Hello?
26:21Margaret Healy.
26:25Where did we spend our honeymoon, our first honeymoon?
26:27This isn't a bloody quiz show, Mr Carr.
26:43What time did the man tell him to be at Drumley Gee?
26:4511 o'clock.
26:50Phone the police.
26:52He doesn't want the police informed.
26:54They know. That's tap. The guard are very good at it.
26:56They'll follow him. There may be a shootout.
26:58Get me the number, please.
27:03Now, you tell them you want to cooperate.
27:05Ask them where Mr Carr is.
27:07What a stupid...
27:09Well, you tell them if you're the suspect.
27:11I'm only here to advise.
27:13Oh.
27:15Is that what you're doing?
27:17Yes.
27:41There he is!
27:47There he is!
28:17There he is!
28:47There he is!
29:03It is a grand day, sir.
29:05Yes.
29:07It will be wet later.
29:09Will it?
29:11Aye, sir.
29:17PHONE RINGS
29:47PHONE RINGS
30:07The insurance man cometh, master.
30:09Simon Mitchell, sir.
30:12Get out.
30:14You're risking my wife's life.
30:16It's a fake call, sir.
30:18How the hell do you know?
30:20Twenty thousand.
30:22They're professionals.
30:24They won't risk a drop for that.
30:37But they gave me proof.
30:41What proof?
30:43Well, I told him to...
30:45ask her a question.
30:47Her sister's name.
30:49That's scarcely an intimate secret between the two of you, master.
30:52Yes, I know. I know. It was ridiculous.
30:55But I couldn't think.
30:57By the time I thought up a better question, he'd put the phone down.
31:00So I didn't know what to do.
31:02I suppose I wanted to believe it, just to do something.
31:07Is that another phone box?
31:09Yes.
31:12Tell the police.
31:15Yes, sir.
31:22Dublin junkies.
31:25They insisted it was a joke.
31:28She has an obsession about your wife.
31:31A flat and rimless, stuffed with pictures and articles about her and killing the meat.
31:36Come in.
31:46So, are you getting anywhere?
31:48No.
31:50Oh, that's frank.
31:52At this stage, Mr Carroll, it's eliminate, eliminate.
31:55But how do you know what to believe?
31:57We seem to become the object of everybody's private lunacies.
32:00The press, junkies, astrologers.
32:04I mean, for example, I saw some children last night playing kidnap where it happened.
32:08And one of them even came to a scene and said he was shot at or his friend was.
32:12It was the first thing we did.
32:14Checked all the cottages in the area.
32:25Don't forget your change, Mr Carroll.
32:42Didn't somebody hear two sets of shots?
32:48This idiot says I'm worth six and a half million.
32:50Aren't you?
32:52Oh, I never have any idea how much I'm worth.
32:56That's not good.
32:59We want people to say you're worth as little as possible.
33:02Why haven't we heard? Is something wrong?
33:04They're softening you up.
33:06Are they? Are they?
33:09Well, they have a little.
33:11Black or white?
33:13White, please.
33:15I intend to pay. Let me make that quite clear.
33:17Aha.
33:19The police will try to stop me.
33:21Yes.
33:23And you can get the money through.
33:25I can advise you on that.
33:27You won't do it yourself?
33:29No, sir. May I?
33:31Please.
33:34You don't get the insurance money
33:36until you've paid the ransom in full.
33:38You're aware of that, sir.
33:40Yes.
33:42The kidnap and ransom policy must be kept secret.
33:45That means you cannot go to your bank
33:47and borrow money on the strength of it.
33:49I have to raise what I can myself.
33:51Exactly, sir.
33:55Now, one last point.
33:58My employers prefer the police to be unaware of my presence.
34:02You're in La Paz?
34:04In...
34:06La Paz.
34:08Yes, Mr Bennett was a member of MI5.
34:12Or was it MI6?
34:32Yes, sir.
35:02This isn't it.
35:04It's Kevin in.
35:06Oh, not that again.
35:08He's away with his aunt in Lismore.
35:10May we come in?
35:12Bring them in here.
35:14Eileen, you hear me?
35:16Bring them in here.
35:19Come in.
35:29Will you have some tea?
35:33We're out of tea.
35:35Then we won't bother.
36:01My husband.
36:03He was kicked from the ground you're walking on.
36:08You won't know who to be burying there.
36:10Rita?
36:12McSweeney, mayor of Cork, died in a British prison.
36:16Murdered.
36:18At least they taught you something at the school.
36:26There was a murder down the road.
36:31I think Kevin saw it.
36:35Didn't he, did?
36:39And he's seen the spacemen that took them all away.
36:43They had three legs
36:45and one eye in the middle.
36:49He was here with me in the kitchen when it happened.
36:53Baking scones.
36:55He loves baking.
36:58And making up stories.
37:02Oh, well.
37:04We'd still like to see him, Mrs. Sinnott.
37:07All right.
37:09All right, when he's back, I'll tell him.
37:24Take it easy, son. Take it easy.
37:27Take it easy.
37:30Take it easy, Kevin.
37:32We're not going to hurt you.
37:33I saw nothing!
37:35I saw nothing!
37:38In Milan,
37:40a man whose wife was kidnapped wasn't too keen on getting her back.
37:45She was returned unharmed.
37:47Oh, I see.
37:49I shouldn't love her or have too much money.
37:55I haven't been my usual
37:58business-like self, have I?
38:00You're too emotionally involved.
38:03Yes.
38:05Yes.
38:08I'd have been able to deal with a situation like this rather better
38:11if I hadn't met her.
38:15I find marriage late.
38:18And we'd just decided to have children of our own.
38:22And that's why I've been rather
38:25emotional.
38:28You married, Mr Mitchell?
38:31Yes.
38:32Children?
38:33A son.
38:36And you can imagine what it feels like.
38:39Stealing a car, the car, is a serious crime.
38:43I was only looking, sir.
38:47Would you like to go for a ride in it, Kevin?
38:54Whether two men, Kevin, or three.
39:02Four.
39:04And a woman.
39:08She shot at me.
39:11Bang!
39:15How would you write your job description, Mr Mitchell, in one sentence?
39:19The operative's function is to recover the hostages alive.
39:24For the least possible ransom.
39:26Are those two objectives in any particular order?
39:31Mr Carr, our concern is for your family.
39:35The underwriters have already written off the one million pounds.
39:38Oh, I'm glad to hear it.
39:39But presumably they'd rather I paid half a million than a million.
39:42Well, I've not had it.
39:43I've seen that in South America.
39:45I'm not putting my wife and daughters into that.
39:48I don't think you realise, Mr Carr...
39:49Oh, I realise, all right.
39:51When the demand comes, I pay.
39:55I want them back if it takes every penny I've got.
40:00Mrs Sinnott, a man has been killed.
40:03A woman and her daughter, who was a few years older than your son, have been abducted.
40:07They may be killed.
40:09Why should I care about her?
40:11She's rich.
40:12They'll get out of it.
40:13Of course they will.
40:15He'll pay.
40:16He'll not miss the money.
40:18Why should we be frightened to sleep at night?
40:21You've got nothing to worry about here, Mrs Sinnott.
40:24You'll protect us.
40:26Of course.
40:29If Kevin will tell us what he saw...
40:31Her husband was shot for informing.
40:33A grand man.
40:35Oh, he was a grand man, all right.
40:38He was buried by Tom Barry, all right.
40:41He was shot by the IRA.
40:44Or was it the IRB then? I don't remember.
40:51It doesn't matter.
41:00That was a very long time ago, Mrs Sinnott.
41:03Aye.
41:05Aye, it was.
41:07It was.
41:10And if things changed at all...
41:21I am Frances Carr.
41:28Frances Carr.
41:34I'm 34 years of age.
41:50Today is...
41:56Today is...
42:06Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
42:16Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
42:24Thursday.
42:31I had porridge, an egg, that stale bread.
42:40That was Wednesday.
42:46It's still Wednesday.
43:02If you've nothing to do, Frances, learn a poem by heart.
43:10Fancy me remembering Mummy saying that.
43:16A camel's hump is an ugly bump.
43:19Or was it lump?
43:22But she will see it as zoo.
43:25But even uglier is the bump.
43:28Or lump.
43:30You get from nothing.
43:36You get from having...
43:38You get from having nothing to do.
43:41The cure for this ill is not to sit still.
44:12How's my daughter?
44:14OK.
44:16Please let me see her.
44:19Please, I beg you to let me see her.
44:26Will you listen to what I'm saying?
44:33What are you going to do?
44:35Sit down.
44:37Sit down.
45:08Don't touch it.
45:16Tom Ring Diamond.
45:19Tom is the kidnapper's codename.
45:22You're Diamond.
45:24When you want him to contact you,
45:26you have to give him your phone number.
45:29You have to give him your phone number.
45:32You have to give him your phone number.
45:35When you want him to contact you,
45:37put that small ad in the Irish Times.
45:42Three million. I can't pay that.
45:45Or anywhere near it. It's absurd.
45:48I don't believe what you read in the papers.
45:53That's good public relations.
45:58Or bad, under these circumstances.
46:02I borrowed to...
46:05keep control of my company.
46:11I can...
46:13just about scrape up one million or three.
46:19Tom will take some convincing.
46:31Tom will take some convincing.
47:01Tom will take some convincing.
47:31Tom will take some convincing.
47:34Tom will take some convincing.
47:37Tom will take some convincing.
47:40Tom will take some convincing.
48:01Tom will take some convincing.
