00:00In the midst of the continuous expansion of social media, fake news spread like trolls and some of them talked about GMA Integrated News and commented on how they worked as a spreader of pecking information.
00:23Witness, Marie Zumali.
00:30Do you know which is the truth and which is fake news?
00:39Fake news is made up of information that looks like the truth, but is far from the truth and is manipulated by the public.
00:47In a study by Dr. Jonathan Ong and Dr. Jason Cabañas, this started to become a hot topic in the Philippines during the 2016 election.
00:56What we found was that it's more normalized for politicians to be doing digital operations.
01:04For some people, yes, it is explicitly political. They want to elect into office. And one of the most lucrative and most available jobs is digital operations.
01:15One of the fools was the former graduate, Chris. His name is not his real name.
01:22Because he was looking for a job in 2015, he jumped to the bright side.
01:29At first, he was just a moderator of the Facebook page that will be used in the election. Until...
01:35At first, he was told to monitor the comments, to block those who said it's not good.
01:44But in the meantime, we need to make content or posts that will destroy the opponent of our candidate.
01:52Chris didn't know that he was doing a troll. He didn't know the word troll in 2015.
02:01It's very simple. The caption is ready, the pictures are ready, where you will post it, what time you will share it.
02:10How much salary did you get?
02:12I started with P17,000. We were paid in cash.
02:18What was the most severe thing you wrote?
02:20We accused a candidate of being a troll.
02:23Because the opponent of our client is not proven to be a troll.
02:31This is where Chris gradually felt that there was something wrong.
02:35Every day, our boss pressures us to think that this can be thrown at the opponent.
02:43Even if it's not true, even if it's exaggerated.
02:47But you still won.
02:48Uhm, yes. I earn money, so why would I stop?
02:55Even if it's not true.
02:57The hierarchy or structure of a troll farm is simple.
03:02The client or the one who benefits from disinformation is the boss.
03:07Next is the troll operator or consultant who is in charge of the whole operation.
03:12And they are the troll workers who spread misinformation using stolen identities
03:19that they usually get from other countries, particularly in Southeast Asia.
03:24There are bosses and they won't ever call themselves a troll, but they are actually the real masterminds of the operations.
03:34They will dictate the talk points and the main kinds of stories.
03:37For a job like this, Val is not a real name.
03:42He was hired to be a digital operator, a national treasure for troll workers.
03:48But he did not enroll as a candidate, but as a businessman.
03:52He has the competence of the company that hired him.
03:55We are trolls, ma'am.
03:57We steal from everyone.
03:59We use all the accounts.
04:00We steal from everyone.
04:02We use all the accounts.
04:04Oh, yes.
04:06Their service is really bad.
04:08The system is corrupt.
04:10According to Chris and Val, it's easy to trust people.
04:14Topics that instill fear, anxiety, or resentment.
04:19These are the topics that are really attacked by trolls.
04:24And these are what they use to use as digital weapons, really.
04:28To steer the conversation.
04:30To draw people's attention.
04:33What's sad is that even politicians who are angry at fake news are forced to use trolls.
04:41It's becoming more normalized.
04:43It's becoming more professionalized.
04:45It's more expected now that we need to fight too.
04:49We need to be meme wars too.
04:52But in the midst of spreading misinformation, we can still do something to fight fake news.
04:59We need to empower workers, empower our students to have better vocabulary of ethics.
05:06Better vocabulary of good and bad practice.
05:09It's like we're overlooking the questions of ethics.
05:13Val and Chris admitted that their illegal job is to live every day in fear.
05:23In the end, they were the ones who decided against it.
05:28It's like guilt, ma'am.
05:31Because you were deceived by people, ma'am.
05:34And now you're deceiving yourself.
05:37I don't want to be hypocritical.
05:39A lot of money will be lost.
05:40But I can't ignore my conscience.
05:43What they're doing is wrong.
05:45It's really wrong.
05:47I blame them.
05:49We have the power to fight fake news.
05:52Let's start by being watched by other parties.
05:56Because our freedom to live in the truth is great.
