04:13This is a big loss for us.
04:15How's that?
04:17Claire was...
04:18Just a great guy, that's all.
04:20He had a big heart.
04:22He'd give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.
04:25Plus he threw the best parties.
04:27So he, uh...
04:29Had a busy personal life?
04:31The ladies, you mean.
04:33Oh, that houseboat of his
04:35was rocking morning, noon, and night.
04:38So, you discovered the bodies.
04:40Then what did you do?
04:41I called it in what was the purpose of your visit this morning well it was a
04:46beautiful day I just dropped by to say hello hmm you and mr. Finnegan were
04:49neighbors were your friends as well we are friendly we're either mr. Finnegan
04:56or mrs. Ochoa clients of yours now you see that that's privileged so you're
05:00saying they were clients of yours no I didn't say anything was mr. Finnegan in
05:03your employ like I said two people were murdered here last night is there any
05:07particular reason you're not prepared to cooperate with the police that wouldn't
05:10just be because you hate cops now would it now whatever give you that I do you
05:16know for your information I act for cops I defend them you may want to file that
05:21away not too often you don't know it's true you know I I spend most of my time
05:27defending people from cops oops there I go again where were we don't leave town
05:34mr. Granada wouldn't dream of it how long did you and Claire work together
05:40mr. spouse we started this agency seven years ago looks like you've done fairly
05:46well for yourself very well Claire always said if you knew it was going to
05:49be like this he would have left the force sooner to be honest with you I
05:53never thought there was that much money in the private eye game for most people
05:56there isn't Claire had a gift kind of gift when it came to comforting women
06:02who were distraught cheated on soon to be single he was the best in town so
06:06it'd be safe to say that there's a bunch of cash-strapped ex-husbands out there
06:09who wanted a piece of him I'm afraid so well we're gonna need a list
06:20and I'll bet you Lucy Ochoa's husband's at the top of that list
06:25we want to thank you for coming in mr. Cho you know how hard a time this is my
06:40wife was a beautiful person it's like a light went out I hate to have to ask you
06:49mr. Cho but Mario please was there trouble in your marriage what have you
06:58ever heard of a man named Claire Finnegan sir did your wife ever mention
07:01his name what's this about I have reason to believe that your wife and mr.
07:07Finnegan were involved with one another involved I know they were found together
07:13but it looks to us as though they were having an affair I don't believe it
07:23sometimes people know things they don't want to know sometimes they if my wife
07:28was unhappy in our marriage it's news to me
07:33Jesus no wonder Finnegan's were such a big buck there must be 500 names on this
07:38list we're gonna need homicides help just to eliminate them
07:43hey you listening okay I want to go down to the coroner's office someone got to
07:47check out
07:53mind my asking what we're looking for I'm a professional maybe I can help I
07:57know her you do mm-hmm just can't place her it's
08:01driving me nuts yeah well that I can't help you look is that the sudden death
08:04report yeah well can I see it please
08:14we should get going
08:18there it is see that end up right up so next to Ken Jeffrey Nash yeah there it
08:26is all right see when I knew her her maiden name was Nash she's Jeffrey Nash's
08:31sister so who's Jeffrey Nash he's the guy who was doing life for Julie
08:35Maverdy's murder oh that Jeffrey Nash okay you sure it's
08:40the same one I'm the guy who arrested him
08:46Lucy Nash was in court every day during the Maverdy trial do you know about that
08:51no I was in three hills Julie Maverdy was a university student real pretty
08:57real bright she was found stomped to death in a UFT parking lot her beating
09:01was horrendous yeah close casket town went berserk the
09:05force was out for blood the police caught up with two suspects early on in
09:09the investigation Donnie Bevin and Warren Klosky street
09:12hustlers yeah more like degenerates anyway there's a third suspect right now
09:18I'm in uniform down at 64 division at this time get this call one night this
09:22anonymous tip that this guy's riding around without shitload of hash in his
09:26trunk so you catch up with him and I have a look-see there's a shitload of
09:31hash all right but there's also this lead pipe covering blood the lab matches
09:36that blood to Julie Maverdy's blood and the guy driving the car is Jeffrey Nash
09:41exactly it's my first big call that's what got me in the homicide
09:47anyway I'm thinking that this houseboat shooting there's more to it than just
09:51being a domestic Ed you know you're gonna have to talk to
09:55there about this why we're just getting started here let's go in
10:05okay
10:09he knows the regulations right oh yeah but you know when you know something you
10:14don't want to know it so Ed tell me about Jeffrey Nash you know he's just
10:20another closet case University professor he hooks up with these two low-lifes
10:24they got in this drug and alcohol binge that lasted weeks he became the perfect
10:28suspect but his sister didn't think so no no Lucy always maintained that he was
10:34innocent you know to her he was ran Marshall and
10:38Milgaard all rolled into one so after you arrested him you testified at his
10:42trial mm-hmm yeah I did okay effective immediately you are off the case and
10:48poked you why I think the inspector can fill you in
10:57hey wait a minute I'm the one who's got it
11:09what is this a witch hunt and you cannot investigate yourself it cannot be done
11:14but I'm not investigating myself am I am investigating the murder of Jeffrey
11:17Nash's sister in an ex-cop let me put this another way you cannot investigate
11:20a case that you've been part of okay what if there's nothing to investigate
11:24you know what if you didn't do anything wrong then you have nothing to worry
11:26about do you
11:35he was a bit different from the chief's desk don't you find not so far stick
11:43around you'll see anything I can do for you this morning Dave as a matter of
11:49fact there is okay someone told me that your first official act as interim chief
11:54was to go all out on this double murder yes I would have consulted you but you
12:01weren't around I wish I had been look I can understand you wanting to show the
12:08rank-and-file that you care but surely there are better ways and how's that
12:14Finnegan wasn't a serving officer for one thing well he used to be he left the
12:19force with 12 years on I also have trouble with the kind of officer
12:23Finnegan was and in what kind is that a womanizer one who achieved little in his
12:29time with this force went on to profit from other men's weaknesses and wound up
12:33dying with another man's wife not bucking for Pope here are you Dave he's
12:37not exactly a wall of honor candidate that we're talking about here okay okay
12:42so you didn't like the guy is that it pretty much it's funny well he makes me
12:50want to solve his murder more mr. Speltz we think that your partner's murder and
12:59that of mrs. Ochoa may have had something to do with his last case what
13:04can you tell us about it I'd rather not oh I think you'll have to like I say
13:08unless of course you want to find out how difficult it can be to get a PI's
13:11license renewed you'd be amazed okay Lucy wanted to appeal her brother's
13:21conviction and Claire was looking into it at Tommy Granada's request I wouldn't
13:25know about that I do know it was against my advice
13:28why were you against it I guess you remember the Maverdy case different than
13:31I do how's that pretty girl beaten beyond recognition the whole town beside
13:36itself the force up on its white charger when they finally caught Nash in those
13:41two scumbags they had to put him in protective custody for fear of what the
13:44other prisoners would do to them it was a real hornet's nest all right couldn't
13:48see why Claire wanted to stir it up so why did he Lucy Ochoa initially maybe
13:55but as time went on he got more excited about the case he believed there'd been
13:59a genuine miscarriage of justice how so he didn't say did he receive any threats
14:05did he feel like he was in physical danger funny why funny I guess you'd
14:13have to know Claire well seeing as how he didn't when it came to the rough
14:17stuff Claire had balls as big as bookends his
14:21attitude was bring it on these five shell casings we found at the crime
14:27scene they came from James Bond's weapon of choice it's an exotic little weapon
14:34women like it I like it
14:39what's up detective off the case why something I was vaguely involved in a
14:52few years ago oh you know what burns me though well I'm on it long enough to
14:58serve up the first real piece of evidence and then they yank me off it
15:01maybe it's for the best are you talking about well these regulations are set up
15:08to help protect officers caught in situations me caught let me rephrase
15:12that I didn't mean you necessarily how's it going
15:18well you know yeah I think I do call just came in we gotta go what's it about
15:25it's an assault an assault since when do you and I handle assaults since the
15:30deputies bucking for the chief's job apparently there's a judge involved so
15:33what's next parking tickets moving violations I know let's get all the
15:37jaywalkers while we're at it look I hate to have to break it to you but we
15:40don't get to choose our cases not in this life no hey give me the address
15:47Ed Jack I'll meet you there all right half an hour tops
15:55see ya
16:00thank you for agreeing to see us today mr. Nash happy to we're sorry for your
16:04loss we're investigating the murders of your sister and Claire Finnegan so they
16:10tell me what do you think happened could working on your appeal have led to their
16:15deaths my lawyers advised me not to talk to the police your lawyer that wouldn't
16:24be Tommy Granato by any chance now would it
16:28don't you think you have some kind of responsibility here responsibility yes
16:36responsibility two people die quite possibly trying to help set you free and
16:41you do nothing for them you just clam up it's none of your business but I'm
16:45grieving for my sister in my own way if you had any knowledge of my case you
16:50would know I don't need any lessons and responsibility from the police
16:55mr. Nash is there nothing you can tell us nothing you can say without
17:04jeopardizing your prospects
17:10before he was murdered Claire Finnegan told me that he thought my chances of an
17:15appeal were pretty good he gave me the impression he'd come into some evidence
17:21what kind of evidence he didn't say
17:26so is Nash telling the truth why lie to mess us up to pass the time I mean his
17:33appeal just flew out the window he's here for the rest of his life what's he
17:36got to lose I don't see it I say we track down the two guys who were
17:40convicted with him Evan Klosky yeah see what they have to say fine but first I
17:44want to work with data which ones he believe me if you come up to the ranks
17:49here you'd know he was the lead investigator in the Maverick case it's
17:52kind of a legend was he oh yeah everyone had a lot of time for Jimmy D
18:06black right Jimmy you remembered I'm impressed come on in
18:14did you hear about Lucy Nash in that PI I got lots of time to read the papers
18:19I'm retired now and it's sad brother was never my cup of tea but Lucy was a real
18:29sweetheart she deserved better than this she did she did you know that she and
18:36Finnegan were looking to appeal Nash's conviction she's his sister right I mean
18:41he's always gonna be innocent in her eyes no there's a theory floating around
18:45that Nash was telling the truth after all about what those two lowlifes
18:49framing him just like he said framed him how planted the weapon I see if that's
18:56the truth Jimmy then I helped him do it and my whole career is based on a bad
19:00arrest whoa if anybody's at fault here you're looking at him why you I'm the
19:08one that broke her the deal I'm the one that set up the plea bargain I got
19:12those two doorknobs to roll but without that deal we never would have gotten
19:17ash and Bevan a Klosky they never would have said anything about anybody your
19:22problem is the plea bargain got the manslaughter to the math those two guys
19:29are out now I can't believe this you hit me if I didn't know any better I'd
19:40swear I was judge Jaspers noise abatement family's young neighbor
19:53didn't want to turn down a stereo
20:10okay all right we're taking this downtown you must be joking there's my
20:18way or the hard way your honor personally I don't care which so you're
20:27saying that Bevan or Klosky are good for this or both of them that they did Lucy
20:31and the PI I don't know maybe what's the motive though I mean they already did
20:40their time not all of it so if this PI digs up something that proves that they
20:47did the box those two guys get hauled off parole sent back inside to spend the
20:52rest of their time plus I give an additional time for perjury right my
20:59only problem is how'd they know that Nash was looking to appeal well that's
21:05easy Finnegan goes to see him starts asking questions one of them puts two
21:10and two together just like we're doing now before you know it Lucy Nash and
21:16Claire Finnegan end up dead I don't know it's possible I guess hey well you know
21:26I never figured out what that Nash was about but those other two they were bad
21:29guys well I guess you and I better keep our eyes open huh why you think they're
21:38crazy enough to come after us
21:41anything's possible right
21:51detective inspector maybe you'd like to make the introductions well this is
21:58inspector Castillo Corporal Sweet Jimmy Dator come on in
22:05thanks on Jimmy
22:08you and I are gonna have to have a talk
22:23tell me something Ed what part of you're off the case is it that you don't
22:27understand I went to see a buddy of mine Ed I'm not gonna paper you up this
22:32time but if you do this again you'll leave me no other choice is that clear
22:37crystal good
22:42so yeah just got off the phone with Donny Bevan's parole officer she sounded
22:48concerned why is that she hasn't seen or heard from him in several days do we
22:52have a current address fine I'll be out in a minute
22:57and I know this is hard for you but you just have to sit tight and let things
23:01play themselves out don't make this worse than it already is all right
23:11so huh well the next thing I know this cop shows up he lays hands on me he's
23:18I send you an Osterhaus out where is it by the way I park in the car I send you
23:32two out to diffuse the situation and what do you do you turn around and you
23:35arrest a county court judge what the hell were you thinking Jack you know if
23:40this crazy old bastard wants to take a swing at his neighbor fine I'll go talk
23:44to him he takes a swing at me he's coming downtown he's getting booked
23:57okay I need you to make this go away
24:02can I ask why I just need you to make it go away
24:08Oh
24:13and put some ice on that yeah
24:19so I dropped him
24:23that's the last time anyone saw this guy do we know apparently Bevans been sick
24:27a lot
24:29Oh
24:37Oh God
24:42this individual Donald Bevan has been dead for four days would you view this
24:47as a suspicious death yes yes I would why is that well there are compression
24:52marks on his cheeks his face is completely white looks to me has always
24:55been suffocated what else he also shows signs of having had an advanced case of
25:01AIDS so it could have been a mercy killing well he would have been in a lot
25:07of pain assuming he had a willing caregiver absolutely then again it could
25:12be just plain old murder yep Finnegan and Ochoa were working on an
25:17appeal that was bound to upset a lot of people but what the hell did Donnie
25:19Bevan do to make himself worth killing it served his time he looks to have been
25:24living quietly exactly why kill a guy who's only got a couple of months to
25:28live anyway shut him up to prevent him from telling Claire Finnegan what really
25:32happened in the Maverdy case so you're buying daters theory Klosky kills three
25:37guys to prevent them from testifying at the appeal everything indicates Bevan
25:40was killed by someone he knew there was no forced entry no sign of a struggle
25:44Warren Klosky's prints are in the room I say we track him down and hear a story
25:49fine I just need to hear a dater story again
25:56mom I should have been there it doesn't matter he just had taken a shot at you
26:03too even so well if you want to help me tell me what I'm supposed to do with
26:10this bonehead judge look the deputy wants to make sure he gets off on all
26:15criminal charges since when does barrel pull a stunt like that since you decided
26:20to take a run at the top job you know so some bozo from the services board called
26:26her up or somebody from the solicitor general's office did and so what I said
26:30you know the bench can't handle this kind of heat make it all disappear yeah
26:35get used to it so we pick a new chief everything around
26:39political thanks for coming down Jimmy no problem I'm partial to pretty cops
26:47besides they gave me a visitor's badge and everything so what do you think of
26:53your murder theory now what do you mean after Bevan's death oh well it's one
26:57thing to want to stay out of prison it's another to commit three murders to do it
27:00hmm I could be way off frankly I doubt it I just need to know what you're
27:06basing this on mostly the kind of guys that Bevan and Klosky were street
27:11hustlers right male prostitutes and they were heavily into drug use the guys
27:16never worked a day in their lives plus they were violent what's a guy like
27:21Jeffrey Nash doing with these guys Nash maintained he brought them into his
27:26house as a charity cases wanted to turn the lives around so it wasn't really the
27:33rough sex it was some kind of a what social welfare project that's what he
27:39said but you didn't believe him no but what I wanted to say was that Bevan and
27:44Klosky were also terrified of what a prison they figured they'd get skinned
27:50alive that's why they rolled on Nash and those guys would have rolled on their
27:54own mothers to avoid jail time so do we know what happened once they got there
27:59I heard it got rough she got me to thinking that maybe Bevan took a chance
28:05and told that PI his side of the story I mean he didn't have much time left on a
28:09clock anyway right right but no way Klosky would have so if you had to kill
28:15a few people to stay out of prison so be it
28:20you rounded up Klosky yet no no he's missing too any ideas I might have a
28:29list of his old haunts around somewhere but I don't think that would do you any
28:33good well he might go back there it's not like he's been anywhere new but jail
28:37right if I dig something up I'll call you
28:42I'd like to have a word with you what about but the harsh realities of our
28:50criminal justice system uh-huh yeah contrary to what you might believe it's
28:55not a level playing field out there it's not when you're dealing with a judge
28:58yeah I can afford a lawyer yeah and he can afford a better one and between the
29:03two of them they will make the legal proceedings go on forever it'll be very
29:06expensive and very punishing on you punishing how I don't know your
29:11property taxes paid up have you done any renovations without a permit you pay
29:16your parking tickets does your dog have a tag oh come on look I'm willing to
29:23turn a blind eye to your disturbing the peace me disturbing the peace should you
29:29decide to press charges I'm telling you right now that would be unwise so I'm
29:33supposed to cut a deal with the guy who popped both of us in the head is that
29:36what you're saying sometimes it's better to turn the other cheek nice job
29:43you got
30:06gonna help you I'm practicing practicing what sitting tight letting this play
30:21itself out not making things any worse than they already are so how's it going
30:29you know I may have put an innocent man behind bars my career is going down the
30:35toilet nobody in the building will look me in the eye and I can't do a goddamn
30:39thing about it but other than that you know that's rough no question what about
30:46you how's things coming I can't tell you was that you can or you won't for what
30:53it's worth I think we're close
30:57I'm gonna rest there's a certain individual out there who fits the
31:03profile if we can locate him bring him in shake him down I think things should
31:09go back to normal good gentlemen Tarver just called me okay he might have
31:21something for us
31:28you
31:33hey Tarver hey you guys still looking for this Klosky guy right yeah garbage
31:38man happened take a look inside this thing earlier it'll be like what he saw
31:41I don't this is your guy but he matches the description
31:48tell me something why do all those suspects keep turning up dead yeah I'm
31:54beginning to get a pretty good idea
32:04do you know Jimmy Dator of course he was the lead investigator in the Maverdy
32:09case he's been very helpful to us on this one that's good to hear he led us
32:14to believe that Warren Klosky and Donnie Bevan were scared obviously with good
32:18reason he also told us that those two rolled on Jeffrey Nash and that Nash may
32:23have gotten framed for murder and that Finnegan probably found out about it
32:26but there was something that Dator left out what's that Klosky and Bevan didn't
32:33frame Jeffrey Nash they also didn't kill Finnegan and Ochoa Jimmy Dator did and
32:38then he killed Klosky and Bevan because they knew about the frame that's a bit
32:45of a leap isn't it Vic pathology reports confirmed that all four killings took
32:50place on the same night ballistics confirmed that Finnegan Ochoa and
32:54Klosky were all shot with the same gun there were over 30 investigators on that
33:00case why Dator he was the lead he's the only one that could have done it
33:05everything points to him okay fine you bring me proof and we'll proceed
33:14I'll be a minute
33:23will you proceed excuse me will you proceed when have you ever known me to
33:30go back on my word yeah but now you're running for chief K the hell is that
33:34supposed to mean that means that if Jimmy Dator is dirty for this detective
33:39command is gonna have to reopen every single criminal investigation he ever
33:42worked on the caseload could number in the hundreds do you think that you are
33:45telling me something that I don't know should we or should we not proceed with
33:49this you do your job Vic and I'll do mine
33:59there is no way Jimmy planted that pipe
34:05well that's the word it's no way and we're definitely not having this
34:09conversation right now right of course we're not having this conversation right
34:13now Jack but it's crazy why would Jimmy do something like that homicide
34:17detective looking to play God that's never happened before he's already got
34:20two guys why is he gonna risk making it three maybe didn't have Nash cold maybe
34:28he just figured he was good for it I don't know I'm just guessing but
34:34could Nash have rubbed him the wrong way is that possible
34:42maybe
34:45so maybe Dator's looking at Nash and maybe Dator's looking at the clock and
34:52maybe Dator wants to go out on a high note cities in an uproar and they buy it
34:56and for six years he gets away with it until this guy couldn't Jack shows up
35:02with some bad news and backs Dator into a corner what's he do because he can't
35:07go to jail so he takes all those years of investigating homicides and he puts
35:16it to good use he starts committing some of his own
35:24don't buy it
35:27and I guess we really didn't have this conversation
35:43watch your ass buddy
35:48speaking of proof mm-hmm Finnegan must have had something solid but what was it
35:58you know I keep going back to that video camera of his what if there were a tape
36:03in it what if there was evidence in that tape then Dator's home free so I keep on
36:09killing that what if he doesn't have the tape what if he doesn't even know it
36:17existed I mean it was dark in there right if there's a tape and Dator didn't
36:22take it there's only one other person who could have okay so what we're going
36:31for here today is called a mediated resolution what that's where both sides
36:39get to air their grievances and from that airing we try to construct a
36:44reasonable solution great
36:54all right so who'd like to go first
36:59all right you don't return our phone calls Tommy how are we supposed to talk
37:13to you well I guess you aren't we think you're sitting on some evidence what you
37:16think is your business a videotape went missing from the crime scene that
37:19morning we believe you have it like I said look I know you hate cops on
37:25principle but do you seriously think you're acting in your clients best
37:28interest here well I have many clients inspector you know who I'm talking no I
37:32don't have a clue Jeffrey Nash you believe Jeffrey Nash was framed by a
37:35dirty cop the man who framed him is still out there mr. Granada hmm and he
37:39may see you as a loose end do you understand what we're telling you if
37:44you're waiting for the right time to disclose whatever evidence you're
37:46sitting on this might be a Tommy
37:51hmm would you state your full name please Donald James Bevan and do you
37:59swear that the testimony you're about to give is the truth yep so what would you
38:04like to tell us today Donnie I want to take back what I said in court what did
38:10you say in your testimony I said that Jeffrey Nash helped Warren and I kill
38:17that girl Warren Klosky Warren Klosky and that was a lie
38:24yeah what really happened one I did it on our own
38:35and then I told the cop that we stashed the pipe in a alley on the campus and
38:44and who did you tell that to detective sergeant Gator and what did detective
38:50sergeant Gator say he said that he would take care of it and that Warren I just
38:58had to keep our story straight in court
39:02you okay Ed yeah I'm fine so this is what got Lucy and
39:14Finnegan killed we think so Finnegan couldn't resist taking it to
39:18data telling data he was gonna go down and Finnegan called Granada told him
39:23about the tape Finnegan thought they had more than enough and what did Granada
39:29think Oh Granada saw was a convicted jailbird on his deathbed having a
39:33change of heart Granada thought they needed more but
39:38sweeten I disagree we think this could do it
39:47well what can I say don't bother you've said more than enough
39:53oh
39:59this bloody door just slipped oh that looks like it hurts you should get some
40:04ice on that there's washing down the hall sorry about that judge I'll get
40:10maintenance on that door careful
40:23I must be out of practice yeah that must be it anyway thanks for having me
40:39down it's fun you forget I'm gonna be honest with you Jimmy I had an agenda I
40:46won't leave your heads up oh yeah well mash has this lawyer guy named Tommy
40:53Granada you know he's got this tape and he's gonna hang us all out to dry
40:58everybody associated with the Maverick case come on hey what could possibly be
41:05on a tape enough to get a meeting with internal and then apparently this
41:09Granada who's gonna go to the press we'll have to wait and see right I
41:15just thought you'd like to know yeah be prepared and all that I appreciate it
41:23it suit looks good on you
