00:00Hurricane Milton may be weakening after leaving a wake of destruction after it made landfall,
00:08but hurricane season isn't over yet.
00:11At the start of the season, NOAA said they expected some 13 hurricanes before it was
00:15over.
00:16So far, we've only had 9.
00:17That's due largely in part to such a quiet August, with no named storms between August
00:2113th and September 3rd.
00:23However, that might be the very reason why this hurricane season may continue.
00:28Experts say that the periodic cooling of ocean temperatures in the southern Pacific
00:31regions, also known as La Niña, has started late this year.
00:35La Niña is known for reducing vertical wind shear, one of the primary natural forces that
00:39can slow down a hurricane's cyclonic winds.
00:42That coupled with African monsoons which feed moisture into the Atlantic returning to their
00:45regular positions on the continent means there are now ideal conditions for more hurricanes.
00:50Right now, conditions in the Gulf of Mexico are perfect for them, as Helene and Milton
00:54have demonstrated over the last two weeks.
00:57Those conditions could shift south into the Caribbean soon.
01:00However, extremely high temperatures all over the Gulf of Mexico, with most areas clocking
01:04in averages over 80 degrees Fahrenheit, means the Gulf is still an ideal place for hurricane
01:09formation.
