00:00Two Filipino athletes are now competing in the sports of golf, Bianca Pagdanganan and Dottie Ardinas.
00:08They are also the representatives of the Philippines in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
00:12Aside from them, the Philippines team recently competed in the Singapore Junior Masters 2024.
00:19That's right, John Ody.
00:20And now, we are with the youth who won a medal in the Singapore Junior Masters 2024 for the Philippines.
00:29Welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:31We are here with Joff Tan, Brima Pasait and Nicole Gan.
00:35Congratulations to you.
00:37Congratulations.
00:38Okay, all of you are podium finishers, right?
00:42Congratulations.
00:43So, what is your experience here?
00:46Can you tell us, Joff?
00:48So, to be honest, before the tournament, to be honest, I wasn't really expecting to...
00:55I mean, it was going to be hard to win any prizes because in my division, it will be the under 16.
01:04And I'm going to be one of the youngest because I am 14 years old.
01:0914 years old.
01:10So, at the start of the tournament, I was pretty steady.
01:13I finished top 5 on the first day.
01:16Then, on the second day, I played, to be honest, really well.
01:20I was 2 under and then that catapulted me to be the leader after the second day.
01:26So, then the third day...
01:28So, I was leading after the second day, right?
01:30So, third day, to be honest, I didn't really play well.
01:34In the first 9, I was okay, but the second-placer, he actually caught up to me because he was playing really, really well.
01:42Then, to be honest, I broke in the latter half of my game.
01:46And I went down to fifth place.
01:48But, to be honest, I'm still really proud of my achievement because I was still able to get top 5
01:54and also get the first runner-up in the team division.
01:58Wow, congratulations to that.
01:59Because he's 14 years old, but his opponents are 16 years old, right?
02:03Well, I'm just curious, how many years did you start playing golf?
02:06How many years have you been playing?
02:08I started when I was 7 years old.
02:10Okay.
02:11So, roughly around 7 years.
02:147 years.
02:157 years playing golf already.
02:16Alright, let's go to Bree.
02:18Bree, how was your experience in the competition?
02:21It was good.
02:22In the tournament, I had so much fun.
02:24I met so many friends.
02:27At the first day, I thought I would score high.
02:32I'm not really good.
02:34But, I finished late.
02:38I couldn't really see the ball or anything.
02:44At the second day, it was already bright.
02:49So, we played.
02:50We continued.
02:51But, I got a bad score at that hole.
02:54So, I got even par.
02:56But, it's okay.
02:57At least, I still got under.
02:59My goal was to get under in the three days.
03:05At the second day, I scored 7 under.
03:09Because, I got an eagle and a lot of birdies.
03:15I was expecting to get a podium finish.
03:21My parents said, it's okay.
03:23Just do your best.
03:25Have confidence.
03:26Just pray to God.
03:28At the first place, she scored 21 under.
03:34It's so good.
03:36I was like, I wish I could be like her.
03:40I'm just going to practice more.
03:42I'm going to try to get my putts in and pitch close.
03:49I'm going to try to focus and go back to basics.
03:58How old are you?
04:00I'm 9 years old.
04:02When did you start playing golf?
04:04I started playing golf when I was 4 years old.
04:07She started playing golf when she was 4 years old.
04:09She has a lot of potential.
04:11Let's go to Nicole.
04:13Nicole, how was the experience of the competition?
04:15Tell us more.
04:16My experience from this competition was really fun.
04:18I got to meet a lot of great friends.
04:22It was also nerve-wracking at the same time.
04:28On the first day, my front nine was good.
04:33But on the back nine, it wasn't really that well.
04:38It got really dark at night.
04:41We were still forced to play at nighttime.
04:45I wasn't able to see the ball or where to aim it.
04:52Overall, I really enjoyed this trip and the tournament.
04:57Were you nervous or did you just enjoy it?
05:04It's honestly a mix of both.
05:07I enjoyed it and it was also really nerve-wracking.
05:11How old are you?
05:13I'm 13.
05:14You started playing when you were 13?
05:16I started playing when I was 7 years old.
05:19I remember that we were invited to play golf.
05:22It's not an easy game.
05:24It's hard to focus.
05:26It's easy to focus on playing golf.
05:29But it's really hard.
05:31Joff mentioned earlier that there are times when you don't play well.
05:36What do you do to fix that?
05:42What's your strategy?
05:44To be honest, I also struggle with my mental game on the course.
05:48For example, when you throw a ball in one hole,
05:52it's going to be really hard for you to bounce back.
05:55But what I think is just to never give up.
05:58Because when you throw a ball,
06:01I sometimes give up.
06:04And that causes me to...
06:06It goes on and on.
06:08I throw another ball in another hole.
06:11What I always try to do is to never give up.
06:15What I also tell myself is
06:18when you're at the bottom, the only way to go is up.
06:23Just to never give up.
06:24At the end, if I never give up,
06:27I might just realize that it wasn't really a bad score.
06:34Just to never give up.
06:35That's what I always tell myself.
06:38I wonder who influenced you to try playing golf?
06:44And now you're competing.
06:47The person who influenced me to play golf is my grandpa.
06:51Your?
06:52My grandpa.
06:54Because before in his time,
06:57he played golf and he was good at the tournaments and stuff like that.
07:02He was an amateur.
07:06I was actually in gymnastics at first.
07:09But I didn't like it.
07:11The golf course is like 5 minutes away from my house.
07:15So my dad, he let me try to play golf in the driving range.
07:20And I actually liked it.
07:22It was amazing.
07:23How about you, Nicole?
07:26The person who influenced me into this sport is my dad, Oliver Gan.
07:30Because he's a really good golfer.
07:33And I was very sporty.
07:36I love sports.
07:37So he introduced me to the game of golf.
07:39And he let me hit a few balls at first when I was young.
07:43And I really enjoyed golf.
07:46And he always played with me and he taught me the basics of golf.
07:51And now I'm here because of him.
07:55Actually, when it comes to big tournaments,
07:59how do you prepare?
08:01Of course, you're still studying.
08:03How do you set aside time for preparation or practice?
08:07To be honest, I just practice.
08:10I mean, the same for all tournaments.
08:12It's a good thing that my school usually ends at 2.40.
08:16So it's also a good thing.
08:18I'm very lucky to have a membership in a golf course that is very near my school.
08:22So every day, usually every day after school,
08:25I always go to the golf course, hit a few balls,
08:29play nine holes.
08:30And there, I can always see what I have to improve.
08:33And I also practice my short game and putting.
08:36And it's a good thing that my school also supports its athletes
08:41because they also give us a chance to catch up.
08:44Whenever we go abroad to play in the tournaments,
08:48we always have makeup classes to catch up on our studies.
08:51So yeah, they're very supportive.
08:53Do you have a lot of golfers in your family?
08:56Oh yeah, same story as them.
08:58I'm the fourth-generation golfer.
09:01My great-grandfather, my grandfather, and my dad are golfers.
09:05So they are also the ones who introduced me to golf.
09:09And I really liked it.
09:10Interesting.
09:11I hope that someday, they will be the ones to rank in the PGA.
09:15The Philippine national team.
09:17What are your goals?
09:19What are your future plans?
09:22My future plan is to stay in a good score and to stay healthy.
09:28So whenever there's a tournament, I am ready and I can do my best.
09:33And I will remember the things that I practiced.
09:36And I will never give up.
09:40And whenever I get a bad score, I will just recover in my next game.
09:46You know what's funny?
09:47I feel like X number of years from now,
09:49you will be competing in the Olympics.
09:51The three of you, why not?
09:53It's too early to start.
09:55Okay, Nicole.
09:57What are the future competitions that you plan to attend?
10:01Future competitions is the Thai Junior World,
10:05and JGFP Interschool,
10:08and also the Malaysian Tournament for Juniors.
10:14Okay, how about you, Zoc?
10:16Same story as Nicole.
10:17I will also compete in Thailand for the Thai Junior Worlds.
10:22There will also be, I think, a tournament in Malaysia.
10:26And then after that, there's going to be national finals of...
10:32There's a local tour here.
10:33It's called JGFP.
10:35It features around the schools in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
10:40And they battle each other.
10:42So in the national finals, there will be, I think, the top five schools
10:46who will go against each other.
10:47So I am really looking forward to that.
10:49And after that, it will be the Taiwan Junior Open.
10:53Okay, Joffrey.
10:54To the young people who are interested in golfing,
10:58what is your message to them?
11:03If you really want to improve,
11:06you should always show your work, put your effort in.
11:11Also, one important thing that you should really need is
11:15to really love the sport.
11:17I see some players that are forced to play golf.
11:24Yeah, sure, they are good.
11:27They win some tournaments.
11:28But sometimes, they don't really practice that much.
11:32And so, they drift away from the sport.
11:36So if you really want to be better in the sport or really improve on it,
11:42you really have to like it so that you can practice every day
11:47and become a better golfer.
11:49Okay, how about Bree?
11:50What is your advice to aspiring young athletes out there?
11:54My advice to the athletes is to never give up and to always stay strong
12:01and to always practice every day.
12:04Try to practice every day and always give your 100%.
12:19Always show people that you really like the sport
12:24because your parents are also working hard for you.
12:28Okay, that's very sweet.
12:30How about you, Nicole?
12:31My message to young athletes out there is to definitely love the sport
12:37and not just be forced to do it because there's a big difference
12:41between loving it and just being forced to it.
12:45Also, for young golfers out there, definitely enjoy every swing.
12:52It's important to enjoy because if you don't enjoy it,
12:55then what's the point in playing it?
12:58So, it's very important to love and enjoy the sport.
13:02Well said.
13:03This is KRS-P, look at them.
13:05They might be the future of the Philippine Golf.
13:10Good luck in the upcoming competitions.
13:13Thank you so much for joining us this morning.
13:15I'm sure a lot of young people were inspired by you
13:18and I hope a lot of young people will listen to you play golf.
13:21Again, thank you so much.
13:23Congratulations to all of you for receiving these awards.
13:27Good luck on your future competitions.
13:29And continue to make us proud, your fellow Filipinos.
13:32Thank you so much.
