The research from Holiday Extras found that the majority of tourists want to leave a positive impression on the places and communities they visit. 1 in 4 holiday makers have indicated culture is important when going on a trip and a quarter have suggested a strong desire to support smaller businesses when travelling.

00:00So we've been working with our partners at Holiday Extras who conduct an annual survey of
00:06travellers, UK holidaymakers, looking at things like what factors play into their decisions on
00:15when to book and where to book their holidays. And this year amongst the highest concerns
00:23when picking a destination was the issue of over-tourism. We've obviously seen and heard a lot
00:29about that over the summer. We've seen protests in many parts of the world about tourism,
00:34maybe tourism's a little bit out of balance in some places. And this is something which is
00:40obviously now translating into people's booking habits. What we also saw was things like climate
00:45change concerns as well, obviously, you know, different weather patterns, places being maybe
00:50hotter than they ordinarily are, places being on fire in some extreme cases. So we're definitely
00:57seeing that these concerns are starting to play into people's considerations, maybe even more so
01:03than things like the cost of living crisis. And what are the kind of impacts of tourism then
01:08broadly? Well tourism has very many different types of impacts, both positive and negative,
01:14just like anything. I mean on the positive side obviously it brings a lot of money into
01:20economies, it creates a lot of jobs and so forth. But also it can have
01:26unintended consequences, particularly when places become maybe too popular. This kind of word
01:31around over-tourism has sprung up in the last couple of years. So if tourism is maybe affecting
01:37the price of housing and access to local housing for local people, you know, that can be a
01:43problem if people aren't able to access amenities, if resources are being used so that they're not
01:50then available for local people. If waste is being created from tourism, these are some of the
01:55maybe the more problematic areas of the industry.
