00:00Bak Kut Teh flavoured ice cream? Yes, you heard that right.
00:08It is actually not bad.
00:20Welcome to Play Klang Cafe where the motto is simple.
00:24Now everyone can enjoy Bak Kut Teh.
00:27Don't be fooled, this isn't just a gimmick.
00:30This cafe has a much bigger mission.
00:33Set in a 100-year-old pre-war shop lot across from the Klang KTM station,
00:39Play Klang Cafe is all about celebrating the town's rich history and culture
00:44in the most delicious way possible.
00:48Founder Joe Mee Yao, an avid traveller, came to a realisation when he turned 30.
00:54It was time to showcase the beauty of Klang to the world.
00:59Originally a hostel for backpackers when it opened in 2018,
01:03it was transformed into an eatery after the pandemic.
01:07Every corner inside the cafe tells a story of Klang's vibrant past.
01:12You'll find art installations of iconic landmarks like the Kota Bridge
01:17or historical events like the Battle for Klang that occurred in the 1800s.
01:23Of course, the heart of Play Klang Cafe is its Bak Kut Teh,
01:27which is pork-free, by the way.
01:29Try the Bak Kut Teh Carbonara, complete with a poached egg and chunks of chicken,
01:34or the creamy and savoury Bak Kut Teh Risotto,
01:37which is so good you're guaranteed to clean your plate.
01:41The idea of the Bak Kut Teh Carbonara and bread and ice cream
01:44is because we found a lot of tourists from Muslim countries,
01:48like Turkey, like different countries, they cannot afford the Bak Kut Teh here.
01:53But the Bak Kut Teh is a very important culture in Klang,
01:56so we try to do it pork-free.
01:58Many of their fusion dishes are inspired by recipes shared by tourists from all over,
02:03such as the Bak Kut Teh Pogca, a soft and buttery Turkish bread.
02:09And let's not forget their boldest creation, Bak Kut Teh Ice Cream.
02:14Inspired by Japan's soy sauce ice cream,
02:17this creamy vanilla-based dessert has been causing quite a stir.
02:21It's not everyone can accept, but still a lot of people try to challenge it.
02:26And some people really like it and they will order more ice cream or they will order tamar soup.
02:32We say it's definitely worth a try.
02:35On the drinks menu, each cup is printed with sketches of Klang's historical landmarks
02:41and features QR codes that provide audio-visual guides in six languages.
02:46So while you sip, you can become an expert on the city's rich history.
02:52Try the Hello Yapi, a sparkling coffee infused with grapefruit for a refreshing zing,
02:57or the Crow Signature, a nod to Klang's crow population,
03:02featuring herbal tea ice cubes with honey and lemon.
03:05The cafe has also teamed up with local schools to preserve Klang's heritage
03:10through artwork created by children.
03:13And in the upstairs dining area, you'll get to witness a miniature version of Klang's future,
03:19featuring luxury stores and futuristic skyscrapers created by children using cardboard boxes.
03:27We are quite proud that we let more people to get to know more about Klang.
03:31And now, actually, it's more happening here because six years before, it was very quiet in this street.
03:37But after we developed a few years ago, after the pandemic especially,
03:41a lot of new shops are coming here.
03:43So it makes us feel very happy that Klang grew out and became a tourist place right now.
