00:00Experts in Wastewater Management are now working on a technology
00:05where even water spills can be used for energy, fertilizer, and more.
00:11Rod Daguzad has the details.
00:17Before the water we use for our daily use reaches our gripo,
00:22it goes through various processes to ensure that it is clean.
00:26After this, the wastewater or water used,
00:30such as the bathing or washing of the plate that goes straight to the sewage,
00:35will also go through a treatment or process before returning to the water.
00:39In this process, a sludge or biosolids emerges,
00:43a kind of waste that is brought to the landfill,
00:46but it can still be used for energy.
00:49And following support from an expert under the Balik Scientist Program
00:53of the Department of Science and Technology,
00:55it is now possible here in Manila
00:58through the use of anaerobic digestion technology.
01:01We can do this in a way to make it more dry
01:06and then convert this waste into energy.
01:11Not only energy like biogas that can produce heat and electricity,
01:17but also we can use its by-product to become fertilizer.
01:22Through this, there is no more waste that needs to be thrown away
01:26before it can help the environment.
01:29With the help of Dr. Mario Rebusura Jr. of the Balik Scientist Program,
01:33he brought his experience in water utilities in Australia,
01:36it is now possible.
01:37The so-called technology has not changed,
01:39but it is a chance for the Philippines to join other countries.
01:43According to Rebusura, this is also a big thing when it comes to human health.
01:48We can't just let it be in our facilities.
01:54We need to do something about it.
01:55We need to reduce the volume of the sludge that is produced in our facilities
02:02and treat it.
02:04My role here is to speed up their understanding
02:09on how to operate these anaerobic digestion facilities
02:12and how to better manage their biosolids
02:15that they produce in their treatment plants.
02:18In addition, the technology can be adjusted
02:21so that smaller water utilities can be used here.
02:25In Manila, it is estimated that in 3 to 5 years,
02:29four of its plants will have this capacity,
02:33including their Paranaque Wastewater Reclamation Facility.
02:37Also included in the plan of Manila is to have the capacity
02:40to measure the concentration of biogas coming from the sludge.
02:44For now, it is still being sent to other countries for inspection.
02:47It will help to convert it into renewable energy.
02:52It is also expected that more sludge will be collected
02:55in the treatment of wastewater.
02:56It is expected that it will help the company and the public.
03:00As we lower our costs, it is also beneficial.
03:04It is not just for our customers,
03:06it is also for our environment
03:08because if we just return it to an untreated environment
03:13it will be harmful to our environment.
03:17It is a big thing to have sustainability
03:20to balance our needs that are not affected by the environment.
