00:04:19Evening coach. Can you hear me? Okay. Good evening X. I can hear my head. Go ahead and get started with questions
00:04:26Pat Freeman will have our first question
00:04:30That's right
00:04:34Trying to get our tv straight over here
00:04:37Coach, how you doing this today afternoon? Congratulations after a great win last night. Thank you very much for doing well
00:04:43I hope you are also
00:04:45Yes, sir. I want to follow up from my question last night. I felt tyler bass was kicking the ball. Well
00:04:52Uh, what are some of the things you worked on with him?
00:04:56uh with the special teams coach and
00:04:58And uh after watching the film
00:05:01What exactly went wrong on the block? Was that just a uh, competitive play by the other side?
00:05:09Um, you know, that was something that uh, you know was
00:05:13A little bit of a technique issue on our part. Uh, so it is something that we need to address moving forward
00:05:19uh, we'll work on that, um as far as t bass, you know, he's
00:05:23he's a uh guy that works hard at his craft and
00:05:27Um, I think he had a good week of practice and
00:05:31It showed up in the game
00:05:34And uh, just uh my last question to you health wise. How did you come out?
00:05:39Right. So, uh, we lost uh, tylen grable, uh to a groin
00:05:45muscle injury, uh core muscle injury yesterday, so
00:05:49um
00:05:50He will not practice and more than likely be out for for some time
00:05:54All right, thank you coach sure thing
00:06:01Hey sean, uh, john warrell, uh
00:06:04Hope you had a good uh evening or got some rest. Um
00:06:09Question about uh about injuries and whether we can expect anything from taryn johnson or terrell bernard this week
00:06:17Both are improving john and and uh, they'll do a little bit more this week, but they will not make it back
00:06:23this game
00:06:26And secondly the whole everybody eats mantra on offense, um, how significant was that when
00:06:34Um when it was introduced this offseason and and we heard it from joe brady back in may
00:06:39and how big has it been to see how it's
00:06:43Developed and translated onto the field
00:06:47Yeah, I mean the the unselfishness, uh of that
00:06:51Mantra if you will is is huge, right? Um, I think that's a key aspect of really good teams
00:06:58Across all sports that unselfish nature and I think that's what you're seeing
00:07:02on full display
00:07:04um, and what you saw last night 10, I think 10 guys caught caught balls the the you know, james and
00:07:12And ray and ty all shared some carries and had their share of success on the ground as well. So, um
00:07:19You know just a good healthy dose of of uh, unselfishness, thanks sean sure
00:07:31Hey sean, um, hope you're doing well, I just wanted to follow up a bit on um, taryn and terrell
00:07:37Are you able to fully roll out ir for either of them at this point?
00:07:41I would hope so. I think they're trending in the right direction
00:07:44Catherine it's um, and listen if I hope we don't have to do that
00:07:48If so, we've wasted a couple weeks here or so, but I think I think we're rather confident about um
00:07:55their timeline
00:07:56and it's going to probably bump up into that, you know, two and a half to four week area, but
00:08:02uh, I just feel like um, you know where we're at with it is is we're moving forward in a good way
00:08:09And uh, we are looking forward to getting those guys back, but they're not going to be back
00:08:13They will not return this week
00:08:15Gotcha. Thanks for the clarity on that
00:08:18Um, I was wondering when you watched back the game last night. What did you see from christian benford?
00:08:23Yeah, good solid technique good solid focus
00:08:26Uh controlling the things that he can control play well on the run and the pass game
00:08:31I thought he had a real solid game
00:08:34Thanks, sure
00:08:36You
00:08:42That's it right we're good
00:08:45Hey sean, how are you? Um
00:08:47You know, it's it's funny. I was thinking about spencer brown signing that extension a couple weeks ago
00:08:53And it feels very eerily similar to ed last year signing his extension and then kind of proving it almost immediately
00:09:00He's been uh among the best offensive lineman in the league through three weeks
00:09:04And I know you don't like to get too far or give too much praise too early. Um
00:09:10But how good has he been and how important has that been to the success of your offense?
00:09:16No, yeah, spence is a big part of our offense. I mean last night. I thought our offensive line did a great job
00:09:22uh winning the line of scrimmage against a
00:09:25A good unit their defensive line that that has had some success
00:09:28uh defending the runs
00:09:31affecting the quarterback
00:09:33And uh, I thought our offensive line really played well, um, which is good to see and and something we're going to need every week
00:09:39I mean, um
00:09:41Because the challenge is going to be
00:09:43Just as big this week against the ravens. So, uh, very pleased with what I saw last night
00:09:49And then you know for joe obviously with the way that the offense has been scoring points a lot of praise rightfully
00:09:56so
00:09:57but inside the building when you look at the
00:10:00Evolution and development of your offensive coaching staff
00:10:04How much can you pinpoint like, you know the experience of guys like rob boris and aaron cromer?
00:10:09And and how much they've helped joe as he's kind of taking the reins here and just the the cohesiveness on that staff
00:10:16Yeah, that's big. Um, you know, I think I mentioned it last night one of joe's greatest qualities
00:10:21He's got many but one of them is that he's a good listener and when you have veteran
00:10:26uh
00:10:28You know teammates, uh coaches on your staff to to to have those conversations with
00:10:34That have seen a lot of football been around a lot a lot of football
00:10:38Um that goes a long way right that there's mutual respect both ways and and a good amount of collaboration
00:10:44as you said and communication and and trust ultimately and and so that's been
00:10:50That's been a real good thing. And then we've got uh, you know a good blend of some younger coaches as well that are
00:10:56uh able to learn and benefit from
00:10:58from the wisdom that that chrome and and rob have and
00:11:03and so and rc's been around a lot of ball as well both as a coach and a player now, so
00:11:07uh
00:11:08player and a coach now, so
00:11:10Um, it's it's a good group. Um, and I couldn't be more pleased with how they're how they're working well together during the week
00:11:18And one more quick one. Um, you know with taryn, uh going to be out again this week
00:11:23What have you seen from cam lewis and you know, especially looking ahead to baltimore specifically
00:11:29And the necessity for physicality and tackling sure tackling against that front
00:11:36What has he done that kind of has elicited confidence amongst the group and amongst the coaches?
00:11:42Well cam, you know, he's been here. Um
00:11:45A few years now and and he's worn different hats
00:11:49so any hat that he's
00:11:52Uh been asked to wear
00:11:54He's he's uh, he's handled it extremely well. I mean he's poised. He's mature
00:11:59He's a good football player. Um, so
00:12:03You know very confident his ability, uh to go out there and execute for us
00:12:08Thanks, sean
00:12:14Hey sean, thanks for taking a couple minutes here for us, uh today, um
00:12:19it
00:12:20after week one bobby babbage talked about how
00:12:23After the first half he kind of needed to decompress a little bit
00:12:27We've seen the defense look much different after that first half against arizona
00:12:31We hear players a lot of times talk about the game slowing down for them
00:12:36Have you seen that a little bit with bobby as he's gotten more and more reps and as you all like to say time on task
00:12:44Yes, uh josh. No, you're
00:12:47You're right it's it's uh, the game moves fast when you're new to it or in a new seat and
00:12:54It happened to me
00:12:55it certainly happens to a lot of us and
00:12:58When you're wired though in such a way like bobby is with that growth mindset to learn from every experience
00:13:03And then to put in a lot of time the next week
00:13:06Applying those lessons that that you learn from the week before
00:13:09It only helps and it helps like you said to slow the game down. So
00:13:14Whether you're a player or a coach in this in this case that you know, bobby continues to grow and learn and
00:13:19um, and and so does the entire defensive staff, I know the offensive staff was mentioned as well and
00:13:26feel really good about the defensive staff as well and their ability to work together and solve problems because
00:13:32Problems come up even even when you are three, you know and things we have to do to improve whether it's you know
00:13:38monday through saturday or
00:13:39come sunday in the game, so
00:13:42That's that's an important trait of a good staff. It's all I got time for sean because perino took so long appreciate the time
00:13:50I'll let you guys work that out
00:13:55Hey coach, how do you begin to prepare for stopping a running back like derrick henry who went off last week against the cowboys?
00:14:03affordable price
00:14:05See how much you could save with a free estimate today your successful future begins at hilbert college
00:14:11We'll match you with a major that best fits your interests
00:14:15Come visit us at open house on october 12th and november 9th. I think someone needs to hit mute on their
00:14:21open house someone listening to
00:14:24Thank you. Yeah, there we go. Sorry maddie. Um, yeah, um
00:14:31I can't remember what you're asked as I was thinking about hilbert college
00:14:38Rarely
00:14:41It was okay
00:14:42I think the coast is clear. Yeah, go ahead. Sorry
00:14:46How do you begin to prepare for stopping slowing a running back like derrick henry? Yeah, I that one's
00:14:53that one's uh
00:14:55An easy one not to answer but to address it. It's I don't know that anybody's ever stopped them. I mean it it's
00:15:02it's an all-day affair when you when you have the weapons that they have on offense and
00:15:07Um, I mean was watching the game on tv the other day, um
00:15:11as we were preparing for meetings that night, you know prior to our game and
00:15:15I mean it was just talk about controlling the line of scrimmage and physicality and I know coach harbaugh he
00:15:21i'm sure he's preaching that because I know just being around him what he believes in at least to a certain extent and
00:15:27really really well coached team and and um, you know, they were
00:15:32They were in full effect against dallas and that's a good team dallas's so
00:15:38Um, you know, we're gonna have our work cut out for us. That's for sure
00:15:42Thanks, sure
00:15:47Well good afternoon coach george radney challenger community news, how you doing good george, how are you today doing?
00:15:52All right on a rainy monday or rainy tuesday as it seems here. It's not rain george. It's not raining here
00:15:58Oh, that's why he's smiling. That's why it's such a get the good luck on your side is going so far three
00:16:03You know and everything
00:16:05uh
00:16:06But my first question is what is it with the ravens?
00:16:10You seem to have really come up with really well thought out game plans
00:16:14Against them, uh, every time the bills have played the ravens so far under your leadership is you seem to be able to control?
00:16:21uh, lamar jackson enough that he doesn't just
00:16:24You know just doesn't come up have the big plays they don't have the big explosive plays
00:16:29Against it against you so far
00:16:32I don't know. I mean, I I think um, you know, our players just really do a good job executing
00:16:37Uh the staff, you know over the years has has done a good job
00:16:41Putting their heads together collectively and coming up with a good plan
00:16:44Um, but the execution more than anything
00:16:47Is is where it is where it ends, right? So
00:16:50um, it's it's a tough challenge, uh to go against lamar, he's the reigning mvp and
00:16:58for for a good reason right so
00:17:00um, you know, it'll be a tough challenge for us on sunday night and
00:17:04Going down there at their place. Um, so
00:17:09You know, it'll you gotta have a good week of practice and and put a good plan together like you said
00:17:14Is that gap integrity very important so that you don't overrun the play?
00:17:19Uh critical against a quarterback like jackson, it's probably part of it but at the end of the day
00:17:24I'm, not sure gap integrity always matters when you're talking about lamar with the ball in his hands, you know, so
00:17:30What an athlete what a quarterback what a player right and that's why he is who he is, uh around the league
00:17:36And lastly this uh, everybody eats team
00:17:39I remember at saint john fisher every player from rookie to veteran when I interviewed them
00:17:43They would mention that theme everybody eats during their conversation. How did that get started? Who started that thing?
00:17:49Who came up with the theme for this year? Yeah, that's a good question
00:17:52I I gotta give credit to joe, but i'm not sure if it was joe, but to me it originated with joe. Um,
00:17:59You know, I don't know. Yeah, that's a better question for joe. Probably I just go with it. Hey, they it's it's become
00:18:05Uh theirs and so I just go with the flow with it. So
00:18:08Well, definitely everybody's bought into it. So definitely good luck this coming, uh sunday night
00:18:13Thank you george. Appreciate it
00:18:18Hey sean, um, I was wondering a bit about al holcomb
00:18:21You've obviously worked with him in different capacities for a while now, but just what have you seen out of him this year?
00:18:27Um, you know, there's been some obvious challenges with the group, but how have you seen him kind of help the room?
00:18:33Uh navigate all those obstacles
00:18:35Yeah, right. So al and I go back, uh to our time in carolina together and
00:18:40Uh fortunate to be able to get al up here
00:18:42uh
00:18:43the start of last season and
00:18:45Uh, he was in albeit a different role then but um, just you know, al's got a great track record of developing
00:18:51uh players, you know, not only you know, really good players like
00:18:55all pro players like luke teakley and thomas davis, but
00:18:59then other players that have
00:19:01Gone on to do great things as well. I mean look look at what he's done this year
00:19:05Look what he did in carolina when we didn't have say luke for a certain period of time and how he developed a.j
00:19:10Klein or when we didn't have thomas for a certain amount of games as well. So and now with what he's doing with
00:19:18uh with the injuries we have at the linebacker position, so
00:19:22you know a lot of respect for al he's a valuable part of our staff and
00:19:26Uh and a good teammate as well
00:19:28What is it about his coaching style that helps him develop players so much?
00:19:33Well, he has an understanding I think of of the game and offensive football and and also a deep understanding
00:19:40Of what we're trying to get done defensively and how the linebackers fit into the overall
00:19:46equation, so I think that and that he's he's come up
00:19:50um around some really good coaches tom kaufman being one of them and
00:19:55um, you know, he's won a super bowl with with the giants years ago and
00:19:59And so you learn a lot like when you're around a good good coach a veteran coach like coach kaufman
00:20:05Um
00:20:06and uh, and he's used that to
00:20:09to i'm sure
00:20:10help him in his career and i'm sure he uses a lot of what he learned being around coach kaufman and
00:20:15Um, you know and with al he's always evolving and he's always I know really interested in how the game's evolving
00:20:21so that again that growth mindset not to wear that out, but
00:20:24I think it is important because if you stay curious
00:20:28About things. Um, I think you're you tend to grow
00:20:32Thank you. Sure
00:20:36You
00:20:40Coach mookie harkins wealth was worse than 80 great win yesterday
00:20:44Thanks, mookie. Appreciate it. How's your team doing, buddy? Um
00:20:49Yeah, I think we was kind of similar in points over the weekend. I just left uh, crispy cream no glaze out there
00:20:55But they're kind of similar i'm hearing about this great eighth grader out there at orchard park was tearing up the modified division out there
00:21:02So keeping my ear to the ground
00:21:05Appreciate that man. Appreciate it
00:21:07coach man, just care to talk about
00:21:10Deion darkens his approach going into this season, uh with his leadership and also the trenches man
00:21:17How how impressed are you about the way your teams are playing in the trenches so far?
00:21:21Yeah, that's that's a must man. We got to play well every week. Um, it's got to be physical and the guys understand that
00:21:29I mean, you're usually only as good as your front on both sides of the ball
00:21:33And uh, we don't experience what we experienced last night without without those guys so, uh, we value those guys
00:21:41Uh love what they do. Um, they don't get a lot of credit
00:21:45um, some of them probably like that right so just kind of stay in the bullpen and do what they do and
00:21:51but it is important what they do so
00:21:54Um, very proud of those guys to this point
00:21:57Uh in the season, um, and we've got to continue to grow
00:22:01And absolutely got a lot of those dirty workers, right?
00:22:03um
00:22:04You talked about it just a minute ago as far as that growth mindset and how things are always evolving and maturing, right?
00:22:11Josh allen, you know how poised how he's just all of a sudden just letting the game come to him
00:22:16You know what? It seems like in these past three games just scared to talk about the next phase of josh's maturation that you see
00:22:23Yeah, he's been very consistent
00:22:25Consistent in his performance on the field consistent in his approach consistent in his
00:22:31um
00:22:33Just willingness to take what the defense is giving him and I think that's
00:22:37um
00:22:38Probably the the biggest thing i've witnessed over the course of the first three games of this season. Um
00:22:46season's young and um, so i'm looking forward to
00:22:49Um how he's going to continue to do that. Um, you know, he'll be defended a little bit different
00:22:55week to week, but
00:22:57You know, he's just his maturation as you said his development has been fun to watch
00:23:01Absolutely coach fantastic job. Have a great week of practice. All right. Thanks for you, too
00:23:10That's all we have for you today coach, all right, thank you guys have a good week
00:23:25You
00:23:55You
00:24:25You
00:24:55You
00:25:25You
00:25:55You
00:26:25You
00:26:55You
00:27:25You
00:27:55You
00:28:25You
00:28:55You
00:29:07Hey joe, can you hear me? Okay. Yep
00:29:09Awesome. I'm gonna go ahead and get started with questions. Uh, pat freeman. We'll have our first question
00:29:15Uh, hey joe pat freeman from the buffalo criterion newspaper. Congratulations on a great win last night
00:29:21Appreciate it
00:29:23Tell me, uh, what is uh your philosophy and spreading the ball around because does that make it?
00:29:30Uh more difficult for defensive coordinators. Uh, they can't pin down any one player
00:29:36And how has this uh been received by the players on the team?
00:29:41Um, yeah, I think um
00:29:44You know, you hope you hope it makes a little tougher
00:29:47Right where you know and in any given play anybody could get the ball
00:29:51Um, I wish it was that easy but um, you know
00:29:54You hope when you go into it that maybe some tendencies here and there don't necessarily show up as much
00:29:59Um if the ball is being targeted and kind of thrown around
00:30:03um, I think the uh, the character i've i've been talking about the character the men in the room on this offense since
00:30:09Um, you know since basically since i've taken the job here. Um
00:30:13Which uh, you know that selflessness mindset of hey, man
00:30:17I might not get the target right now
00:30:19but if as long as I do my job, you know, my time will come and uh,
00:30:22I think the guys have done a great job at that so far, but obviously a lot of season to go. So
00:30:27Um, you know, it's uh, just the game-to-game thing, but I've been i've been pleased with how they've been performing
00:30:32Were you pleased? Uh, uh after watching the film where did what were some of the aspects?
00:30:39Uh that you were not pleased with it seems that your offensive line has really been dominant, uh, the first three weeks
00:30:46Yeah, I think without going into specifics, obviously we have to continue to find ways to get better. Um, you know, there's
00:30:52um, I don't think you can always just uh, see the result and just think that everything's okay, right and
00:30:57um, there's a lot of things that we're going to be able to
00:31:00it's always easier to critique and to be able to go through things after your wins don't get along with that, but
00:31:06um, there's a lot of things out there that you know, we're going to have to improve on to be able to
00:31:10You know win this week and as the season goes and I think our guys have the right mindset and the approach
00:31:14and understand that you know
00:31:16Uh, it's week three of the season. We got a lot of football left to play and there's a lot a lot for us to improve
00:31:21on
00:31:22All right. Thanks a lot coach. I appreciate it
00:31:29Hi joe john warrell the ap how you doing john
00:31:32um, yeah, uh going back to the everybody eats thing. Did did you
00:31:37Is there a surprise or maybe?
00:31:39A validation in in knowing that that mantra of everybody eats has been such a big buy-in for for these guys
00:31:48No, I you know, um
00:31:51I think it's just it's just the guys that we have and when josh when you got josh on that quarterback
00:31:56it makes life a lot easier, right and
00:31:58um, you know and uh
00:32:00um
00:32:01We found different ways to win football games so far and that's what i've been pleased out and it makes life a lot easier
00:32:05with that
00:32:07You know with that mindset of hey if if we have to go into a game and run the football to win
00:32:11Um, we've shown the ability to do that and if we have to come out, you know, you know throwing
00:32:16Throwing we've shown the ability that we can do that
00:32:18And so I think that that helps you that mindset that does the guys know?
00:32:22Hey on any given game or or drive or kind of play is my opportunity can come and um, you know
00:32:28I hope that they can you know feed off of each other's energy with that
00:32:31And just lastly how important was it?
00:32:34How did you see keon respond to to being sidelined for the first half our first quarter i'm sorry and then
00:32:41To have him score a touchdown
00:32:44um with that catch
00:32:46And to know that josh I think probably was was was was trying to feed feed him after after what happened
00:32:52Yes, you know, uh after what happened in the first quarter
00:32:55Yeah, no, I thought he he handled everything the right way like like it's never tough not playing right?
00:33:01But you know, how are you especially as a young guy, you know
00:33:04uh when a quarter goes through am I able to look at the pictures and understand so that how the how the game's being
00:33:09played how the dbs are playing you and
00:33:11So when my opportunity comes in, you know, and you know, I told him before the game I said look
00:33:15There's gonna be opportunities, right? Um, you know, no one just plays a game
00:33:19You're gonna get more than that quarter might not matter
00:33:21you'll have three other quarters to be able to go play football and
00:33:24um, he had the right mindset the right approach, you know with everything and
00:33:27You know, I was happy that he was able to you know, cash in on the touchdown
00:33:30you know had a great opportunity man coverage and you know, josh made him pay for it and
00:33:34kia made the play and
00:33:36um, you know, it's uh
00:33:38it kind of shows to you know, just his mindset and not allowing that to kind of impact them and frustrate them and
00:33:44Um, you know, I was pleased with how he responded
00:33:48Thank you
00:33:53Coach brady mookie arkans well for sports in 80 could win yesterday. Thank you
00:33:58Hey, man, I mean
00:34:00I don't know. I'm not quite sure everybody told you this by now, right the the brady bunch on how you are able to use
00:34:06So many players all at one time and you're you know with your creativity and your play design
00:34:12Just care to talk about you know, how was that helping josh slow the game down?
00:34:16He helps he helps all of he helps the play calls
00:34:20Um, like it's it's definitely not the other way around. I'll tell you that
00:34:25Um, no, but he's in such he's in such um
00:34:28you know the game like he's another year playing football and the game slowing down for him and just seeing it and
00:34:34um, you know the chemistry that he has with the guys the communication since you know otas and
00:34:39Just being on the same page and just his leadership
00:34:41It kind of you know a game like last night like those don't happen often
00:34:45but a game like last night shows
00:34:47all the work that he kind of put in with it and the guys put in together with it and so
00:34:51um, you know, it's it's definitely always about the players and
00:34:54And them kind of going out there and bringing it bringing it to life and um, it's fun to watch last night
00:35:00absolutely, is this like another evolution you saw of him transforming more of a
00:35:05Of a shooting guy than to a point guy if you will right just by letting the game comes to him
00:35:10So of course just care to talk about um, you know that next phase maturation you see in josh
00:35:16yeah, like I think I think um, you know, just continuing to
00:35:21Um, you know just game to game just continue to understand that hey nothing that nothing that he hasn't already shown
00:35:27I mean look josh has shown everything in this league that you know, and you know, which are getting every week, right?
00:35:31but um, you know, that's it's it's the nfl or you can have a good weekend
00:35:36um, you got a full week where you know, i'm sure i'm sure he's gonna you know
00:35:40we'll probably get praised for how we played last night and
00:35:42Saying people are gonna can't wait for him to have a down game, right?
00:35:45and so
00:35:46We're just going to continue to try to play to our standard and try to focus on what we can control and
00:35:50the men in the locker room and our our quality of play
00:35:53and um, you know, I think that that's his mindset and whatnot, but
00:35:56um, you know, uh, i'm pleased with where josh is right now
00:36:00What do you got to say about a a solid matchup to sunday night versus this branch more ravens defense? Yeah, it's I mean
00:36:08It's a uh, it's you know going on the road is never easy, especially in this environment
00:36:12Um, you know, it's going to be a great it's going to be a great atmosphere
00:36:15you know an elite defense, um, you know, it's gonna be a
00:36:19It's it's uh, you know for for a football fan
00:36:22It's it's it's the games that you look forward to and i'm i'm fortunate to be able to coach them and so
00:36:27Um, we'll be uh, we're excited for it
00:36:30Okay, we can practice coach. Thank you
00:36:39Hey joe, um
00:36:40Curtis samuel through three three games. Um, I think it's uh, 17 12 and 17 snaps
00:36:47What's gone into you know?
00:36:48Sean talked about this a little last week about like it's game to game you kind of go with the flow of the game
00:36:52But from your perspective
00:36:54What's gone into the the usage and maybe a little bit lighter usage than maybe expected going into the era for curtis
00:37:01yeah, I think you know, honestly play counts haven't really
00:37:05um again, we've been extremely fortunate and I know it's not like that in the nfl but
00:37:09The reality of it is the last two games, you know, the second half hasn't you know
00:37:15you know, we have we've been fortunate to not have to run many plays and or do many things and so
00:37:20um, you're able to just kind of just you know, do the basic stuff out there and
00:37:24Um, you know, I understand the reality. It was through a normal game. It's not going to play out that way. So
00:37:30um, you know having really like looked in the play counts necessarily for really anybody some people might be high because of the plays that
00:37:36Were kind of running, you know in those situations
00:37:38Um, you know, so nothing to really kind of look into or at least from my perspective
00:37:44Curtis is that
00:37:46Okay
00:37:47And then with josh, how much has the hand injury?
00:37:50limited or change
00:37:52What you know you're asking him to do especially like when he gets out and runs
00:37:57um
00:37:58You know you see the when he's handing off on a couple of those plays and he kind of backhands it with his
00:38:02With his right hand how much does that kind of change things, you know game plan wise?
00:38:07It hasn't changed anything, you know, but it whether you know, josh figures it out, you know, no matter
00:38:13You know if he can hand off that way if you hand off that way, but literally having called a play differently mindset differently game planning
00:38:20Um, he's good to go
00:38:23Cool, and then last one for me
00:38:25Um, you know, sometimes when we come to the facility, you know, we kind of see you guys walking around, you know
00:38:29The coaching staff you and chromer i'm always taken back by aaron in general
00:38:33Like he always seems like that, you know cool lay back kind of
00:38:37Uncle or something at a family party
00:38:40and then you see him out on the practice field and you see some of the coaches really grinding like
00:38:43All people say he's got to just chill him back there watching everybody coaching people
00:38:48What's your what's your?
00:38:50Experience with him and what's your been your take on?
00:38:53What he brings to that coaching room?
00:38:56everything
00:38:57Um, you know aaron chromer, I believe is the best in the business
00:39:00Um, you know i'm so fortunate to have him
00:39:03Um as our offensive line coach, but a guy that I can rely on
00:39:06Um, you know, he's he's he's seen it all he's been through, you know, he's been in new orleans
00:39:11He's been in with the rams. He's been with a lot of great coaches on great offenses
00:39:15um, and uh
00:39:18He's he's extremely bright and does a great job coming up with you know plays that fit who his his players are
00:39:24um does a great job, you know relating to the players and not coaching just a set way and understanding that um,
00:39:31you know, uh how uh
00:39:33Cybo my block is going to be different than david edwards and that's okay
00:39:36But this is how we have to get it done. Um, I think the players love him and I think you you see that on
00:39:41you know on mondays, but on sundays and uh, i'm so fortunate to have him my whole staff but um,
00:39:47You know you asked about him
00:39:49He helps me kind of be who I am
00:39:51Thanks y'all. Appreciate it
00:39:58Hi joe congratulations on last night's win, um
00:40:03Just uh the the jumbo package with with alec. Obviously you guys did a lot last year with david
00:40:08Um, but going into last night, you only thrown it out of it once I think you called maybe five of them
00:40:13I think josh scrambled on one so four
00:40:15um
00:40:16How important is it for that to be successful long term to mix in throws here and there?
00:40:22Yeah, I think um, you know, we we don't go into the game saying we have to do this because that's what our tendency is
00:40:28like
00:40:29um, you know, but I think as much as you can stay balanced with anything, you know, um,
00:40:34you know, we're not just going to do something just uh, just because if it doesn't give us a
00:40:38um, you know an opportunity to put our players in position to have success, um, we were fortunate last night with some of the
00:40:43some of the looks and some of the um
00:40:46you know the uh,
00:40:47you know with the play calls that it gave us the opportunities to be able to get to some of those passes and
00:40:51um, you know, we have confidence in alec and you know
00:40:53Both the run game in the past game and protection
00:40:55So it makes my life a lot easier and it also takes out on some of those it takes a blow off
00:40:59You know dawson and dalton from having to do some of the uh,
00:41:02Some of that that dirty work that they do throughout the game. It just takes a couple blows off them. So
00:41:07um
00:41:08We're fortunate to be able to have that those groupings and you know, alec be able to get the job done
00:41:14When you have tight ends like uh, dawson and dalton and you take them off the field for at least one of them off the field
00:41:20And that scenario
00:41:22Is that one of those things where you kind of really have to see?
00:41:26Some results to justify it
00:41:28Yeah, I mean define what results are right? It's um, you know, I I just because sometimes uh, uh,
00:41:35sometimes it's like hey, we need to see how they're being how they're playing, you know, when we go out in jumbo and
00:41:40You know, we might see a certain look that we're not getting necessarily if we're in 12 personnel or we might get
00:41:45You know, we're in a big people and 11 personnels can be different than if it was just 11
00:41:49And so sometimes it's not necessarily on like hey, let me see what that one result is of that play
00:41:54But hey, what are the looks and what are the advantages that we can get moving forward with that?
00:41:57Um, you know, it's not up every week, but the defense is you have to prepare for it every week, right?
00:42:02um
00:42:03And so sometimes that that's you know
00:42:04Our advantage by at least being able to showcase and then having to having a game plan for it. Um,
00:42:10But uh, yeah, so it's always up and it's always up. It's always talked about and communicated
00:42:14It's just a matter of do we do it or do we not?
00:42:17Now you guys didn't throw it to david at all last year in that package and you obviously haven't to alec yet
00:42:22But he told me last night that that he's ready. Um,
00:42:26Alec did to tell you that he's ready for a for a pass at some time
00:42:29I'll just i'm gonna dial all of them up this week
00:42:32We'll probably try to try to get him up there on the same level as you know
00:42:35Uh, I don't know whoever our leading receiver was last night. We'll try to give them as many targets. I'm sure that'll go well
00:42:40All right. Thank you. Appreciate it
00:42:44Hey joe through three games this offense is looking very disciplined. How is that possible with so many new faces?
00:42:52Um, I i'm incredible coaching staff and the character of the man. Um, you know, it's important to them
00:42:58they understand how detailed and the accountability everything and you know that week one week one, there's too many penalties and
00:43:05um, you know, uh without even having to practice and um,
00:43:08You know those guys did a good job of handling it
00:43:11You know down in miami and then having this long break, you know between them guys came to work and understand how important
00:43:16the practice was
00:43:17Um for monday and so it just kind of speaks to who they are and the coach is doing a great job
00:43:21Preparing and getting them ready and understanding what's important and um, we've been fortunate with you know, how they performed out there
00:43:27Thanks
00:43:31All right, thank you for your time coach, that's all I got for you today, thank you
00:43:51You
00:44:21You
00:44:51You
00:45:21You
00:45:51You
00:46:21You
00:46:51You
00:47:21You
00:47:51You
00:48:21You
00:48:51You
00:49:18All right
00:49:22Hey, bobby, can you hear me? Okay. Gotcha. Awesome. I'm gonna go ahead get started with questions pat freeman. We'll have our first question
00:49:29Hey, uh coach pat freeman from the buffalo criterion newspaper. Congratulations
00:49:33Again on a great, uh performance last night. Thanks pat. Appreciate you man
00:49:38I want to ask you the first few games your in-game adjustments have been on point what's been working
00:49:45uh a little bit for the offense you've always
00:49:48Uh seem to have an answer how important has the play
00:49:52Of daquan jones and ed oliver and those guys up front been for you
00:49:56everything always starts up front with us and um
00:49:59It always will and we're going to go as our defensive line goes and our defensive front goes and it's not just those guys
00:50:06It's you know, everybody that can potentially, you know go in the game as everybody knows we rotate
00:50:11We want to try to keep guys as fresh as possible
00:50:14um
00:50:15But absolutely critical to what we're trying to accomplish
00:50:18You've got a big challenge, uh next week against the reigning mvp
00:50:23Uh, what are your thoughts on that challenge of lamar jackson and the offense and uh, derrick henry
00:50:29um
00:50:30Obviously a really really really good offense. Um
00:50:35You know, i've got a lot of respect for lamar jackson I do I have for a long time
00:50:39Um, I think he plays the game the right way
00:50:42Um, one thing that I always look at with players is it seemed it seems to me that his teammates
00:50:50really have the utmost respect for him as the leader of the football team and and um
00:50:56That goes a long way and you know, it's the same you guys have been around here
00:50:59you've seen it with josh and
00:51:01You just get that vibe
00:51:02When you're there with lamar and he seems like he plays the game the right way when you watch him on tape
00:51:07He plays the game the right way and he seems like he's willing to do whatever it takes for his team to win
00:51:11so got a lot of respect for him, obviously, uh
00:51:14Extremely talented can do a lot with his legs and his arm. Um, it's going to be a long week for us
00:51:20um
00:51:22But then you talk about derrick henry. I mean what what's it's derrick henry, you know, he's he's been
00:51:29One of the faces of offensive nfl football for a long time and got the utmost respect for him
00:51:35And really their whole team they do things the right way as an organization
00:51:39All right. Thanks coach. Good luck to you on sunday. You got it
00:51:46Hey bobby josh reed here, thanks for taking a few minutes for us. Um
00:51:51after week one, uh, we had a chance to talk to you and you said that
00:51:56You needed that half time to kind of take a deep breath and it seems like since then
00:52:01You know, you got the defense ruling now. Um, we hear players a lot of times talk about
00:52:06The game slowing down a little bit time on task type of stuff
00:52:10Have you felt like it's kind of slowed down for you a little bit?
00:52:14yeah, you know the first thing i'd say is like
00:52:17Every week is independent of each other, you know, nothing
00:52:21Yeah, of course with anything the repetition of anything you do is going to help you
00:52:26But every game plan kind of has its own identity in its own
00:52:30You know way you want to approach it. Um, you know, the thing about defense is we're reactive
00:52:35We react to what the offense is doing
00:52:37um
00:52:39So every week's independent you got to approach every week differently
00:52:43um, and certainly this week we do too, so
00:52:46um
00:52:47uh, but i'll say yeah, I mean
00:52:49Yeah, absolutely the the more
00:52:52You know the more you put yourself through simulations the more you you know
00:52:57Try to watch as much tape as you possibly can without
00:53:00You know completely bombarding your mind where you you've watched so much that you're like, I don't even know what i'm watching anymore
00:53:06You know what? I mean? So, um, yeah, I mean the more you do it, you know, hopefully the better you get at
00:53:13Thanks, bob. Appreciate you got it
00:53:15You got it
00:53:21Hey bobby, um, obviously you have lamar jackson and derrick henry coming up here
00:53:27Um, you know in in tennessee henry into alabama henry liked to kind of get
00:53:33behind the quarterback whether it was with a fullback or not and kind of get going downhill a little bit or
00:53:38um on stretch plays but
00:53:40Baltimore uses the gun a lot. How does that impact things?
00:53:44You know
00:53:46you know based on what you want to do whether if you want to get heavy to stop henry that's tough because you have
00:53:51Lamar jackson in there and he's still a threat to run or throw or
00:53:55You know if you're light then you have, you know a big back like derrick henry
00:53:59Yeah, I mean you got to account for a lot of things you got to count for a lot of things with these guys
00:54:03um
00:54:04You know, obviously they really did a great job establishing the run this past weekend
00:54:09um
00:54:10but uh
00:54:11There's a lot you got to deal with so you just got to come up with the best plan
00:54:15That you think can stop what they or can at least limit what they do best
00:54:20And that's what we're trying to get to
00:54:23um
00:54:25With with von last night. I think his sack. He it looked like he turned the back the clock a little bit there
00:54:30um with his get off
00:54:33How has he been able to kind of?
00:54:35Manage himself playing, you know
00:54:3725 30 snaps a game. I mean, it's probably tough for a guy who's played, you know
00:54:4350 60 70 over the course of his career. Yeah, I think I think you know
00:54:47I
00:54:49Think von approaches it the right way. He's a pro
00:54:52he makes sure he knows what it takes to make sure he's ready to go on sundays and
00:54:56you know, I'd say that
00:54:58um
00:55:02Von's in complete alignment with
00:55:05Our plan and what we want out of him and what we need out of him as a team
00:55:11and
00:55:12You know, he's embraced that that's that's a true team player and von's been nothing but
00:55:17You know has done nothing but embraced
00:55:20You know his role and he knows, you know his age and all those things and he's not a spring chicken
00:55:27you know, i'll give him a plug for his chicken farm, but uh, um, he uh
00:55:34You know, he's completely embraced his role he's done a great job with it he's prepared himself for that role and
00:55:40hopefully we can
00:55:42Can continue to see the results that he's had
00:55:45Um, and then obviously you've been around sean a long time going back to
00:55:52when you first started working with him in carolina, how has
00:55:56the secondary play kind of involved in his scheme from from that point to
00:56:01to what you guys are doing right now because
00:56:04You guys are consistently among the league leaders and fewest touchdown passes allowed and most interceptions
00:56:10Yeah, it's just you know, you I think you use the word evolve it's just constant evolution of how you play the game
00:56:16you know and constant evolution of how the game is actually being played offensively and how you counteract that so
00:56:23I've said it before. I think that's one of the things sean
00:56:26is really
00:56:27Embraces is is us evolving and he's constantly making sure, you know
00:56:32We're on track with what's evolving in this league and and what really?
00:56:37You know helps you win, you know, and you just said it not giving up big plays and taking the ball away is
00:56:43Always going to help you win games. That's never going to change, you know, so
00:56:46um
00:56:48you know credit to him and and
00:56:50his embrace
00:56:51his embracing of
00:56:53the evolution of the game of football
00:56:56The the fact that you guys have are head and shoulders above everybody else in a lot of those categories big play categories
00:57:03is that
00:57:04scheme is that
00:57:06The right players in the right system or is it players? I think I think it's a mix of everything
00:57:12I think it's a mix of everything and
00:57:14making sure that guys know what the strengths and weaknesses of every defense is and and
00:57:20If they are gonna, you know, potentially complete a ball where we'd want that ball completed and you know
00:57:25Those type of things we you know
00:57:28There's no defense that's going to stop everything
00:57:31if there was one
00:57:34I don't think coaches would exist because the players could just call that defense every time and maybe football wouldn't exist. But
00:57:39um, you know, we just understand the strength and weaknesses like I said before and and uh, you know, we embrace that we try to adjust
00:57:47um
00:57:48to kind of
00:57:49Combat any weaknesses that one call might have versus another
00:57:53Thanks. Got it
00:57:56You
00:58:00Hey bobby, um, I was just wondering for the linebacker room for you for al for any of the coaches on staff
00:58:06Just what is key to developing that group of players?
00:58:10Great question
00:58:12um
00:58:15I think it starts first with you identify the type of player, you know that you're looking for
00:58:19I think that's really important. Like what do we want out of this position and sure is everybody gonna fit in that?
00:58:25You know
00:58:27Fit in that box exactly. No, but you try to identify a couple things that you want then you try to build on that
00:58:33um
00:58:34The thing I think that goes understated is the football intelligence
00:58:41piece of that
00:58:42um, we want smart players, you know, um
00:58:46the
00:58:47the idea that a guy can just go out and play football because he's good at
00:58:52There's certain things that you have to
00:58:55Understand within each scheme and you also got to understand how in these schemes you're you could potentially get attacked
00:59:02You know and that takes a lot of football intelligence and you got to be quick with it, you know, so
00:59:07um
00:59:08You know it goes there and then obviously
00:59:10And and we've talked about it over the last couple weeks of there's a standard
00:59:14It doesn't matter where you're at on the debtor. You go in the game for the buffalo bills
00:59:18The standard does not change. It's not like oh, okay, you know, you're back
00:59:22No, that ain't that ain't the way it works here and the guys embrace that that's huge the guys embrace that and they support each
00:59:28other and and uh, you know, I think they each
00:59:31Give each other a lot of confidence in their ability to play
00:59:35And then as you guys have shifted roles around the defense, you know now that you're in this role
00:59:39What's it like working with al maybe a bit more with linebackers?
00:59:42I don't know if it's more than last season or kind of how his role played out last year
00:59:45But just what's it like working with him? Well, I tell the linebackers all the time that finally they got a real linebacker coach
00:59:51And then um, you know, it's been incredible al's been great as have all the other coaches, you know, um
00:59:59But you know, here's a guy who's coordinated in this league. He's like, he's really smart
01:00:04He's got a lot of great ideas the linebackers love it
01:00:07Like he's been a true blessing for me to have him here on staff and I really appreciate him
01:00:12He's he's really not only an incredible coach, but an incredible person
01:00:17Thanks. Bobby. You got it
01:00:21Hey bobby, um if I could I don't know if i'm i'm maybe somebody said it already what does sfp stand for on a hat?
01:00:29It's just a hat
01:00:32It's uh, it's one of our deals on our philosophy, um
01:00:38smart fast physical
01:00:40You know, you've heard us talk about it before so we had these made for the guys
01:00:44Said if you believe in it wear it if you don't give it back
01:00:48Cool. Um
01:00:50One guy that kind of embodies that or seems to uh, i'd like your impression on it. Jamarcus segue great
01:00:58Uh, jamarcus
01:01:00How much in that dime role and his like willingness to play in the box, especially considering the next opponent
01:01:07How much do you guys lean on that?
01:01:10In that role and how much did that kind of contribute to your trust in him in that role?
01:01:17Yeah, I mean
01:01:20There's a certain way we're going to do things here
01:01:22and if
01:01:24if
01:01:25You're not of the right makeup
01:01:28and you're not willing to do the things that
01:01:30We need to be successful as an organization
01:01:34You know
01:01:36The truth is you're probably not going to be here. Jamarcus is one who's exemplified
01:01:40the idea of
01:01:42This is how
01:01:43We play here. This is what I need to do to make sure I can carve out a role or a niche for myself
01:01:50Um, and he's done a tremendous job of doing that, you know, a big thing for us is trust
01:01:55And he's a guy we can trust
01:01:58um
01:01:59He's a guy that we know
01:02:01What his intentions are every play?
01:02:04um
01:02:05and really when you can roll a guy out of the field and
01:02:10You know say hey, I trust this dude, you know, you can lay your head down at night no matter what the outcome is
01:02:15you know, so
01:02:16um
01:02:18He's done some good things. Um, he's got to continue to work continue to grow and and really excited about
01:02:24You know his continued growth
01:02:27Thanks, bob. You got
01:02:32Hey bobby, it's jay with the buffalo news
01:02:34Yeah, you you kind of touched on it earlier when you talked about the standard but you know
01:02:39You go back to the preseason and you lose. Milano. You lose. Taryn week one. You lose terrell week two. I mean those three are
01:02:46Arguably your most impactful defensive players. They're certainly on the list if if not one two and three, you know
01:02:52How in your mind has this group?
01:02:54withstood those losses
01:02:58You just I think I said it before we just don't flinch like
01:03:03You know
01:03:04And I don't know what it's like everywhere else. I have no idea
01:03:08but
01:03:09you know if if
01:03:11if there's ever a sense of
01:03:15Panic or
01:03:18Frustration with injury
01:03:21the guys see that you know what I mean and and
01:03:25The nfl is always going to go on like they're not
01:03:29Oh, hold on. We'll suspend three or games for another three weeks
01:03:33That's not happening. Like we just got to hit the ground running. We got to go
01:03:37and we
01:03:39Just think in life. We don't
01:03:45That's what our assistants do a great job of is having those guys ready to play
01:03:51And I think I talked about it last week like we spend a lot of time pouring into our backups
01:03:56we spend a lot of time pouring into our backups not only in practice and
01:04:00also in meetings and you know with extra little things here and there but um
01:04:05you know
01:04:07I think the way you react to any situation
01:04:12Could be a little bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, you know what I mean?
01:04:16so
01:04:17We just move on next man up
01:04:20Hey, when's this guy going to be back potentially and hey, okay
01:04:24You got to roll. That's it. That's it. There's nothing and they know what the deal is
01:04:29They don't want to let their teammates down. So they're going to go in and give their best effort
01:04:33With with cam dorian balen. These are all guys that have been around. Um, does that
01:04:40Familiarity help in this in this way as well. Yeah
01:04:44Yeah, I think that for sure does I think that for sure does I mean seeing the same faces every day
01:04:49being around the guys in the locker room not just in the meeting room, but in the locker room really get to know guys and
01:04:54You get to know what they're about and what kind of makes them tick and those type of things
01:04:58So, you know when you talk about a brotherhood, that's really what it comes down to right spending
01:05:03Your your siblings your family you spend a lot of time with well, that's truly what these guys are to each other
01:05:09They're family and they don't want to let each other down
01:05:11Well, thanks. Bobby. You got it
01:05:18Hey bobby, um going off jay's questions, I was curious you mentioned watching film and all that kind of thing
01:05:23But what do you tell guys who are backups and like trying to stay ready? They don't get that practice time
01:05:28But like what do you tell them to do? Like what are you having them do behind the scenes to stay ready?
01:05:34Are you saying what do we physically do or like what am I actually speaking to them?
01:05:39Both would be great
01:05:41I don't say much to them. I'll say hey you got this
01:05:45Let's go, you know and and you're ready, you know
01:05:49um
01:05:50I mean, I think just naturally
01:05:53There's some things within our schedule that change
01:05:57um, there's some little unique offshoots of things maybe when a guy's not on special teams that they do that
01:06:04You know when you guys are at practice you see while we're special teams that starters go do the jugs
01:06:09well, we just fill right in behind and
01:06:12You know, it's it's they kind of know what the process is here. That's been the same
01:06:17for
01:06:19eight eight years
01:06:20so there's no real they just know that you just kind of shift around to to what you're doing and
01:06:27And uh, you know, maybe you watch a little bit more, you know
01:06:31Defensive tape just a little bit more because you know, maybe you get pulled off a special team, whatever that is, you know
01:06:36So what they do on their own, you know, that's they have their own routines
01:06:40But here we just kind of have a system that's just plug and play
01:06:43It you know as far as schedule structure practice structure and all those type of things and they kind of just know what the deal is
01:06:50For sure, and then on a completely different note damar getting his first interception last night
01:06:55I was curious from your perspective what that was like watching that happen and just kind of that that moment from your angle
01:07:02you know
01:07:03Ignorantly, I did not know
01:07:07That it was his first interception and I coached him for a number of years
01:07:11um
01:07:12You know, but what a cool deal man, you know, and I don't you know for me
01:07:17like yes, I know what happened to damar, but I
01:07:20sometimes I forget because we're you know, we're removed from it and
01:07:24You know, and then you kind of hear it's his first
01:07:27Interception after um what he went through and all that then you really just sit down and think about it. What a cool moment and
01:07:34you know, but
01:07:35You know damar's put himself in position to do those type of things
01:07:39And you know anything that's happened in the past to him has no bearing really on him moving forward in the future
01:07:46You know if you believe in you know, just controlling what you can control
01:07:50And uh, really a cool moment
01:07:52Um couldn't be happier for him and
01:07:55And I know he was elated
01:07:57You know, how would you read how he ran it back? What did you have any notes for that terrible?
01:08:03It was terrible
01:08:05Yes
01:08:05Yes, he should we had a wall set up and all of a sudden he starts cutting across the field
01:08:09We tell him we cut across the field. You're on your own
01:08:12you know, so um
01:08:14But hey, it was his first one. Hopefully there's many more to come and he'll learn his lesson there
01:08:19Awesome. Thanks. Bobby. You got it
01:08:22Thank you
01:08:24That's all we got for you today bobby, thank you for your time. All right. Thank you guys
