00:31Mr. Uppity was one of the rudest people in the world,
00:34if not the rudest.
00:36He was rude to anybody and everybody.
00:39So, of course, in Big Town, which is where he lived,
00:42he had no friends at all.
00:44Not one.
00:45Measurable old Uppity, they used to call him.
00:48And he certainly looked it.
00:49Now, as well as being rude,
00:51Mr. Uppity was also rich.
00:53Very rich.
00:54One of the richest people in the world,
00:57if not the richest.
00:59He had the largest, longest limousine in Big Town.
01:03He had the largest, longest garden in Big Town.
01:08He had, on the top of a hill in the middle of Big Town,
01:11the most enormous house.
01:13The biggest house in Big Town.
01:16And there he lived, all alone.
01:19Miserable old Uppity.
01:22One day, Mr. Uppity was walking in the gardens of his enormous house
01:26when suddenly he heard a voice.
01:28Hello, said the voice.
01:30Mr. Uppity looked,
01:32and there, in one of his hundreds of flowerbeds,
01:35was a goblin.
01:36Are you not going to say hello to me, said the goblin.
01:39Go away, said Mr. Uppity rudely.
01:42Oh, I know who you must be, said the goblin.
01:46You must be Mr. Uppity, who's rude to everybody.
01:49Hmm, sniffed Mr. Uppity rudely.
01:52Well, I know somebody who wants to meet you, said the goblin.
01:55And he skipped off, the way goblins do.
01:57Mr. Uppity's curiosity got the better of him.
02:00He followed.
02:02In there, said the goblin,
02:04pointing at a small hole in a tree.
02:06Don't be silly, snorted Mr. Uppity.
02:09Oh, I'm not being silly, said the goblin.
02:12Yes, you are, snapped Mr. Uppity.
02:14I can't possibly get in there.
02:16Ah ha, hee hee hee, smiled the goblin.
02:19And then he said a magic word,
02:21known only to goblins,
02:23which sounded like...
02:25Something like that.
02:27Suddenly, Mr. Uppity started shrinking.
02:29He shrank and he shrank,
02:31until he was exactly the same size as the goblin.
02:34Show me back to my proper size at once,
02:37spluttered Mr. Uppity in a rage.
02:39I shan't, groaned the goblin.
02:41And so saying, the goblin climbed through the hole into the tree.
02:45Poor Mr. Uppity didn't know what to do,
02:47so he followed him.
02:50Inside the tree, there was a staircase going down and down.
02:54It led directly to the kingdom of the goblins.
02:58I demand to be taken immediately to whoever is in charge,
03:02said Mr. Uppity angrily.
03:04So you shall, so you shall, groaned the goblin.
03:08And he led Mr. Uppity through the streets of the kingdom of the goblins,
03:11until they came to a palace.
03:13The goblin and Mr. Uppity passed through the gates,
03:15and into a courtyard, and through some more gates,
03:18and along a long corridor, and through some large gold doors,
03:21and into a huge room.
03:24And there, sitting on a gold throne,
03:28was the king of the goblins.
03:31Your Majesty, announced the goblin, bowing low.
03:34May I present Mr. Uppity.
03:37Ah, said the king.
03:39So you're the fellow who goes about being rude to everybody,
03:43doesn't have any friends.
03:45Rubbish, said Mr. Uppity rudely.
03:48I can see that what I've heard is true, said the king,
03:52looking at the indignant Mr. Uppity.
03:55You're much too puffed up with your own importance.
03:59Therefore, he continued,
04:02I'm going to allow you to be turned back to your proper size.
04:07When you get back to big town,
04:10if you're rude to anybody, anybody at all,
04:14you will immediately shrink to the size you are now.
04:18Do you understand?
04:20The goblin then took Mr. Uppity back through the kingdom of the goblins,
04:24up the staircase, and out of the tree at the bottom of Mr. Uppity's garden.
04:28The goblin looked at Mr. Uppity and said something which sounded like,
04:32Mr. Uppity grew and grew, back to his original size.
04:38Now, you remember what the king said, warned the goblin.
04:42Don't you be so uppity in future.
04:45Mr. Uppity marched off furiously, up to his enormous house.
04:49The following day, Mr. Uppity was out walking through the streets of big town.
04:54Suddenly, he came across a little boy playing with a ball.
04:57Get out of my way, snapped Mr. Uppity rudely.
05:00But, as soon as he'd said it, you know what happened, don't you?
05:05Yes, Mr. Uppity shrank and shrank,
05:08until he was no bigger than the ball the boy was playing with.
05:11Oh dear, he gasped, and then he thought.
05:14I'm sorry, he said to the boy.
05:16What I meant to say was, please got to get fast.
05:19Immediately, Mr. Uppity grew to his original size,
05:22and the boy moved and Mr. Uppity went on his way.
05:24Then he met an old lady carrying a large shopping basket.
05:28Excuse me, she said to Mr. Uppity.
05:30Could you tell me the time, please?
05:32No, said Mr. Uppity rudely.
05:34But, as soon as he'd said it, you know what happened, don't you?
05:41Oh dear, he gasped, and then he thought.
05:44I'm sorry, he said to the old lady.
05:47What I meant to say was, it's twenty-five past eleven.
05:50Immediately, Mr. Uppity grew to his original size,
05:52and the old lady thanked him, and Mr. Uppity went on his way.
05:56Then he went and bought a newspaper from a man
05:58standing on the corner of the main street in Big Town.
06:01He was just about to walk away when suddenly he stopped and thought,
06:04turned back to the man and said, thank you.
06:06Thank you was a word Mr. Uppity had never used before.
06:10The man smiled.
06:11A smile was something Mr. Uppity wasn't used to getting.
06:15Thank you was a word Mr. Uppity not only had never used before,
06:19but it was a word he'd never had said to him before.
06:22Mr. Uppity smiled.
06:24He felt happy.
06:25Happy was a feeling Mr. Uppity wasn't used to feeling.
06:29He liked it.
06:30And do you know, from that day forward to this day backward,
06:33Mr. Uppity is a changed person.
06:36He's still the richest person in Big Town,
06:38perhaps the richest person in the world.
06:40But now he has lots of friends and he smiles a lot
06:44and he never gets that shrinking feeling.
06:46And do you know which two words Mr. Uppity uses most of all these days?
06:52Please and thank you.
