00:00I think the challenge for me was that, you know, looking at it
00:04from the point of view that the writers, Justin and Rachel
00:08and the team, Callen, everyone at the writing team,
00:10what they were looking for was to tell the sort
00:14of more historical context and look at it
00:17from a different point of view.
00:19So I really didn't use the original miniseries
00:22as a reference, although I revere it and I love it.
00:25As a matter of fact, I remember seeing it when I was a kid.
00:28My grandmother was obsessed with it
00:30and all she would do was talk about it.
00:32And then I finally read the book and the book is incredible.
00:36And it really can be looked at from different points of view.
00:38And I felt as though this particular point
00:41of view was fascinating to me.
00:42And so the challenge was to really learn the history,
00:44to really understand what was going on at that time.
00:48And also I love getting asked the question
00:50of what I would recommend to people.
00:52First of all, I don't feel any farther down the road really
00:56in my own head than I did when I started.
00:58And so I can speak as though it was today.
01:01And that is to have passion and to believe in your passion
01:06and to have a unique voice and as either an actor or a director
01:14or a writer to discover your inner voice and what that is,
01:17what you have to say specifically as an artist
01:21and nurture that thing.
01:22And then just go out and do it.
01:24If you want to be a director, take your iPhone,
01:26go make a film.
01:27Borrow somebody's camera, go make another film.
01:30I just would recommend you just do it.
01:32And the more you do it, the better you get at it.
01:35I would say the most important thing that I wanted
01:38to capture was what I appreciate in storytelling
01:41and that is the internal life of characters.
01:45And so my discovery through reading the scripts and working
01:49with the writers and working with the talent was
01:53to find the inner soul of the story,
01:55to find the inner depth of the story and bring
01:57that out into a visual medium.
01:59So that was my primary goal.
02:02And I was hoping that through the various tumultuous things
02:07that happened to the characters in Shogun
02:10and the historical context that they're in, that the one thing
02:12that you would connect with is the internal dialogue
02:17of the characters of Blackthorn, of Mariko,
02:22of Torunaga, of Yabushige.
02:25Their internal voice
02:26and their internal landscape was the main thing
02:28that I was looking to bring out.
02:54And I'm very happy that I was able to receive this trophy
03:02as a result of what I've done so far.
03:10Above all, I wanted to give back to the people
03:14who helped me.
03:18And I hope that the next generation of actors
03:22and producers will be able to make a difference in the world.
03:27I hope that the next generation of actors and producers will be able
03:32to make a difference in the world.
03:41Let's hold on the questions until we get the stage set.
03:44Thank you so much.
03:46I'll cue you, okay?
03:47Don't worry.
03:52Everybody in?
03:53Okay.
