00:00U.S. and China's diplomats, military officials face off, even as DFA officials engage their
00:05counterparts in Beijing on the growing discord and impasse in the South China Sea.
00:10VOA's Elizabeth Chernaff narrates this report gathered by State Department Bureau Chief
00:14Nike Cheng on shaken relations growing between Washington, D.C. and Beijing over Chinese
00:19misconduct in the Indo-Chinese region.
00:25In Taiwan, live-fire missile drills like this one are one way the island counters Chinese
00:31forces' frequent incursions into its airspace and waters.
00:36And to keep tensions in check, be they between Beijing and Taiwan or Beijing and Manila in
00:41the South China Sea, the U.S. and China are talking more.
00:45Both hot spots are clearly a concern, something U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken underscored
00:52this week during the U.S.-U.K. Strategic Dialogues.
00:56We also discussed joint efforts to ensure peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait
01:01and freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea.
01:06For both of us, maintaining peace and stability, preserving the status quo is essential, and
01:11it's essential not just to us, it's again essential to countries all around the world.
01:16In Washington, Congress is considering more than two dozen bills targeting China ahead
01:22of the U.S. presidential election in November.
01:25One recently passed by the House seeks to deter a potential Chinese invasion or blockade
01:30of Taiwan by imposing economic consequences on China's top leadership.
01:36Our problem lies with the Chinese government, not the people of China.
01:41The Taiwan Conflict Deterrence Act recognizes this.
01:45By promoting to publish the corrupt assets of PRC's top leadership, the bill would force
01:52CCP officials to face the isle of their own people.
01:56In Beijing, Chinese officials have slammed the U.S. House of Representatives for pushing
02:02hawkish China-related bills this week, pledging to respond with strong countermeasures if
02:07they are passed into law.
02:09Despite these tensions, both nations are working to stabilize the situation.
02:14Analysts say maintaining open channels of military communication is crucial to avoid
02:20misjudgments.
02:21To have these conversations takes the guesswork out of analysis of why the Chinese are doing
02:27what they're doing and what we can expect or anticipate in terms of future behavior.
02:32And that shrinks space for miscalculation or misunderstanding about the intentions of
02:36each side's actions.
02:37In his visit to China late last month, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan
02:43confirmed that U.S. President Joe Biden will speak with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in the
02:48coming weeks.
02:50For Nike Qing in Washington, Elizabeth Cherneff, VOA News.
