MPs vote in favour of winter fuel payment cut
Sir Keir Starmer has suffered the biggest revolt of his premiership after dozens of Labour MPs defied him over plans to cut winter fuel payments for pensioners.
More than 50 Labour MPs did not vote during a Conservative-led motion to reinstate the payments, despite Starmer ordering his MPs to oppose it.
However, Labour were successful in preventing their backbenchers from supporting the motion with only Jon Trickett, the MP for Hemsworth and a former shadow cabinet minister under Jeremy Corbyn, openly defying Starmer and voting with the opposition.
In total 53 Labour MPs refrained from voting on the measure. Although some, such as the Northern Ireland secretary Hilary Benn, would have been given permission to miss the vote for reasons such as official business elsewhere, many others abstained on principle.

00:00Within a matter of a few short weeks, what has happened?
00:04What happened to integrity?
00:06What happened to transparency?
00:07It went out of the window.
00:10Put simply, it is because we must fix the foundations of our economy
00:16as the first step to rebuilding Britain and making the changes
00:21our country desperately needs.
00:25And because when money is tight, our priority must be
00:29to target resources on those who need it most.
00:34But this cut is simply wrong.
00:36It is wrong to strip support from many of the poorest pensioners
00:39just as energy bills are set to rise again.
00:42It is wrong to force vulnerable elderly people to make that choice
00:45between heating and eating this winter.
00:47And it is the wrong answer to the challenges that we face.
00:51The party opposite scrapped it.
00:53So does she not agree with me that we shouldn't listen
00:58to the crocodile tears of the party opposite?
01:00We will not shy away from our responsibilities
01:04like members opposite did.
01:09The ayes to the right, 228.
01:13The noes to the left, 348.
01:20The ayes were 228.
01:22The noes were 348.
01:26So the noes have it, the noes have it.
