After weeks of trading insults on the campaign trail, the rivals remained cordial as they put forth their differing views on abortion rights, the economy, immigration, threats to democracy and the prospect of war with Iran.

A flashpoint came when Margaret Brennan, the CBS News moderator, tried to fact-check JD Vance over the number of illegal immigrants in the US. The candidates’ microphones were muted as the hosts tried to regain control.

00:00And that's why Donald Trump and I are committed to pursuing pro-family policies, making childcare
00:05more accessible.
00:06Donald Trump had four years, he had four years to do this.
00:09And he promised you, America, how easy it would be.
00:12I'll build you a big, beautiful wall and Mexico will pay for it.
00:16You've got schools that are overwhelmed.
00:18You've got hospitals that are overwhelmed.
00:20You have got housing that is totally unaffordable.
00:22We have so much to get to, Senator.
00:25Those laws have been on the books since 1990.
00:27Thank you, gentlemen.
00:28The CBD one app has not been on the books since 1990.
00:31It's something that Donald Harris created, Margaret.
00:34Gentlemen, the audience can't hear you because your mics are cut.
00:38The idea that we can magically wave a wand and take guns out of the hands of bad guys,
00:43it just doesn't fit with recent experience.
00:45Well, I think all the parents watching tonight, this is your biggest nightmare.
00:49Look, I got a 17-year-old and he witnessed a shooting at a community center playing volleyball.
00:55Those things don't leave you.
00:57First of all, I didn't know that your 17-year-old witnessed a shooting.
00:59I'm sorry about that.
01:00I appreciate you saying so.
01:01And I hope you're doing okay.
01:02Christ have mercy.
01:03This was a threat to our democracy in a way that we had not seen.
01:06And it manifested itself because of Donald Trump's inability to say.
01:09He is still saying he didn't lose the election.
01:12I would just add to that.
01:13Did he lose the 2020 election?
01:15Tim, I'm focused on the future.
01:17Did Kamala Harris censor Americans from speaking their mind in the wake of the 2020 COVID situation?
01:24That is a damning non-answer.
01:26You said you were in Hong Kong during the deadly Tiananmen Square protests in the spring
01:30of 1989.
01:31But Minnesota public radio and other media outlets are reporting that you actually didn't
01:37travel to Asia until August of that year.
01:40Look, I will be the first to tell you, I have poured my heart into my community.
01:44I've tried to do the best I can, but I've not been perfect.
01:47And I'm a knucklehead at times.
01:49Question was, can you explain the discrepancy?
01:52All I said on this was, is I got there that summer and misspoke on this.
01:55So I will just, that's what I've said.
02:00So I was in Hong Kong and China during the democracy protests went in.
02:05And from that, I learned a lot of what needed to be in governance.
02:10This issue is what's on everyone's mind.
02:13Donald Trump put this all into motion.
02:16He brags about how great it was that he put the judges in and overturned Roe versus Wade,
02:2152 years of personal autonomy.
02:23The statute that you signed into law, it says that a doctor who presides over an abortion
02:28where the baby survives, the doctor is under no obligation to provide life-saving care
02:32to a baby who survives a botched late term abortion.
02:36That is, I think, whether you're trying to distort the way a law is written to try and
02:40make a point.
02:41That's not it at all.
02:42What was I wrong about, Governor?
02:43Please tell me.
02:44What was I wrong about?
02:45That is not the way the law is written.
