00:00Let's talk about the proper care for our colon to avoid diseases such as cancer.
00:07We will interview the Philippine and American Board Certified Gastroenterologist.
00:14What is colon cancer? Let's find out this morning. Good morning.
00:21Good morning. I am Dr. Jun Ruiz.
00:25I would like to thank you for inviting me to Rise and Shine Philippines to discuss colon cancer.
00:33Thank you very much.
00:34Good morning.
00:35Jun, we would like to know, because we understand there is what we call colon cancer.
00:40What is it and how does it differ from what we call colorectal cancer?
00:45Because they are quite similar.
00:48For our viewers to understand, the colon is what we call large intestine or big intestine.
01:00The rectum is the last portion of our digestive tract, the system for digestion.
01:10So when we say colorectal, it means the colon, the big intestine, and the last part of our digestive tract, the rectum,
01:23before it goes down to the pit of the intestine, which is the anus.
01:27When we say colon, it is just the colon, but for discussion purposes,
01:33when we say colorectal and colon, it is interchangeable for the patients so that it is easier to understand.
01:43Dr. Jun, what are the common causes of colon cancer? Is it related to our lifestyle?
01:53That is true.
01:55Colon cancer is a combination of its causes from genetics,
02:02which we inherited from our parents, and at the same time from our lifestyle, environmental.
02:08So it is not just genetics, it is not just environmental,
02:12but it is a combination that determines if a person will have colon cancer.
02:19Colon cancer starts with the so-called polyps.
02:25Okay. Well, in all aspects, when it comes to our appearance,
02:31we can see some symptoms. What should we monitor?
02:35How can we know if we need to have a check-up?
02:41Okay. When it comes to colon cancer, if the colon cancer is still early,
02:47there may be no symptoms.
02:49So a patient may feel okay, but the colon cancer is already starting.
02:56When there are symptoms, what we monitor first is rectal bleeding.
03:03When you vomit, you see blood. That is one symptom of colorectal cancer.
03:09Number two, the style of our vomiting changes.
03:14We call that a change in bowel habits.
03:17Let's say we go to the bathroom every day to vomit.
03:21Then suddenly, just once a week.
03:25We call that a change in bowel movements.
03:29Other symptoms, like a pain in the stomach, can be symptoms of colon cancer.
03:36Then we lose weight, but we don't lose weight.
03:42We call that unintentional weight loss.
03:46If we go for a blood test, we become anemic.
03:50It's not just that we don't feel well,
03:53it can also be that you have a blockage in your intestine.
04:01That can be colon cancer.
04:03There are many symptoms, but the important thing is,
04:06if there are no symptoms, colon cancer can still be early.
04:10Doc, I want to know,
04:12because colon cleansing is also popular in wellness centers.
04:18I've heard a lot about it.
04:21What can you tell us about how effective it is to prevent colon cancer?
04:27That's a good question.
04:29Actually, we don't recommend colon cleansing.
04:33In a way, when we do colon cleansing,
04:36we want to get rid of the dirt.
04:39Supposedly, the toxins will come out.
04:42But we can do it in a healthy lifestyle,
04:47where we don't have to spend money.
04:49At the same time, colon cleansing can cause complications.
05:02The intestine can be pierced.
05:04So we don't recommend colon cleansing.
05:10There is a better and more natural way to clean your colon.
05:16That's a good insight.
05:18Doc, additional to this,
05:21how can we prevent colon cancer in a natural way?
05:28Are there simple steps?
05:30What should we do?
05:33The best thing to talk about is,
05:36who has colon cancer?
05:39What are the risk factors for colon cancer?
05:42We divide it based on non-modifiable risk factors and modifiable risk factors.
05:50If we say non-modifiable,
05:52you won't be able to change that factor.
05:54Here are some examples.
05:56Number one, age.
05:57When you reach 50 years old,
06:00when you're a golden boy or a golden girl,
06:02the risk for colon cancer increases.
06:04Especially now,
06:07colon cancer occurs before 50 years old.
06:11But 90% of patients with colon cancer are 50 years old and above.
06:16Number two, family history of colon cancer.
06:20If your mother, father, or sibling has colon cancer,
06:28you are double the risk to have colon cancer.
06:33Number three, if you have colon cancer or polyps,
06:37you are high risk to have colon cancer in the future.
06:41These are the non-modifiable risk factors.
06:44Let's go to the modifiable risk factors.
06:46These are lifestyle-related.
06:48Number one, what are the risk factors?
06:51First, smoking can increase your risk for colon cancer.
06:56Number two, alcohol abuse could also increase your risk for colon cancer.
07:02Number three, not enough food.
07:08We are fond of processed foods, fatty foods,
07:12and foods that don't have much fiber.
07:16That could also increase your risk for colon cancer.
07:20Those who don't exercise.
07:22If we're obese,
07:27and we don't exercise with a sedentary lifestyle,
07:32these are all risk factors for colon cancer.
07:35Based on our discussion,
07:37we can reduce the risk of colon cancer for ourselves
07:42if we have a healthy lifestyle.
07:45Lastly, what is the importance of regular screening?
07:50When should we start getting it checked?
07:54Thank you very much for that question.
07:56The guidelines here in the Philippines
08:00require screening at the age of 50 years old.
08:04Whether you have symptoms or not.
08:06Remember, we said that if you have early colon cancer,
08:09you may not have symptoms.
08:11At the age of 50, we will start screening.
08:15There are two methods for screening.
08:20The simplest test is a stool test.
08:23We call it FIT,
08:26which stands for Fecal Immunochemical Test.
08:29We are looking for blood,
08:32which is microscopic,
08:34not visible to the eye,
08:36in our stool.
08:38Colon cancer can bleed,
08:40which we cannot see.
08:42That's the first test.
08:44The second test is a colonoscopy,
08:46which is a test where we use an instrument,
08:50a flexible tube,
08:52to examine the entire colon,
08:56but the patient is sleeping.
08:58That's why it's comfortable for a colonoscopy.
09:01These are the two methods to screen our patients
09:06starting at the age of 50.
09:08Thank you very much, Dr. Jun,
09:10for the tips and information you shared with us.
09:13It's important to know about colon cancer,
09:16how to avoid it,
09:18and of course, we should have a healthy lifestyle.
09:21Yes.
