00:00And Aaron Rodgers, 95-17, breaking news.
00:04We got you.
00:05We have to pass this along, both with an apology based on what we were just told from Jake
00:11Hutchinson inside the building, but this is a shocking piece of breaking news.
00:15Christian McCaffrey is inactive tonight.
00:17Oh no.
00:18Christian McCaffrey is inactive for this football game based on the calf and Achilles injury,
00:25and he will not play.
00:26It is Jordan Mason's night.
00:28What's your reaction, guys?
00:29I mean, this is huge, because this is the best player on the team.
00:32You can talk about Trent Williams all you want, and I hear you.
00:34Trent was here before.
00:36CMC changed this organization.
00:38He's the cover of Madden, for crying out loud.
00:41This is the safety blanket for the run game, for Kyle Shanahan, for Brock Purdy, all the
00:46check downs.
00:47The synergy those two have on those option routes is unlike anything else I've seen in
00:51terms of he knows where he wants to go and how to exploit a defense.
00:55Jordan Mason now gets elevated to the top of the depth chart.
00:59He's not a great pass blocker.
01:00Does this mean more Kyle Juszczyk back there?
01:03Does this mean you've used Deebo in the way that you used him two or three years ago?
01:08It probably means more George Kittle staying in, too.
01:10Absolutely.
01:11Now that I'm thinking about it, it feels to me like-
01:13This is huge.
01:14We talked about it before.
01:15Maybe with Ayuk on a little bit of a pitch count, it felt like it was going to be more
01:19of a 22 personnel game anyway with two tight ends and two running backs.
01:24As a schemer of schemes, as a thrower of throwers.
01:26I love the scheme.
01:28I think more about it now, and it's going to have to be a much more conservative scheme
01:32without CMC.
01:33Look.
01:34And man, it turns out it was maybe more than the bug bite mark that you and I talked about
01:38at all camps.
01:39Mark thought that it was just like a bug bite or-
01:42When I saw calf ankle, I'm going to be real with you, PTSD for two guys.
01:47Greenlaw, we've been dealing with it all last year.
01:49And Kevin Durant.
01:50And KD.
01:51Yeah, no doubt.
01:52Absolutely.
01:53What I wonder, and maybe the story will come out, because you're right.
01:54I've been wrong if this is something that was serious all camp.
01:56Well, they've downplayed it.
01:58But I wonder if something also happened.
01:59I wonder if there was a re-aggravation sensation.
02:02That's a buck, yeah.
02:03But I was also curious immediately what this would do to the line.
02:06What did it do?
02:07Not as much as I would have thought.
02:09Well, quarterbacks are only a couple points on the line.
02:11It depends on which one.
02:12That's true.
02:13We had our guy on from Vegas a couple of weeks ago, and he said Mahomes can be as much as
02:16eight points.
02:17John Avello, yeah.
02:18He said Brock is about-
02:19The greatest player ever.
02:20Yeah.
02:21Brock is about three or four.
02:22Still a lot.
02:23Christian.
02:24Christian.
02:25The game was four and a half.
02:26It's now three and a half.
02:28That's the point.
02:29But that's-
02:30Oh my gosh.
02:31You guys have been fantasy?
02:32No.
02:33No.
02:34I got Jordan Mason.
02:35I was way ahead of the curve on that.
02:36But you're not playing him though.
02:37No.
02:38Yeah.
02:39But here's the thing.
02:40Here's the thing.
02:41Hell no.
02:42As a Niner fan, I mean, this is the Madden curse coming to life for us.
02:45Yeah.
02:46This sucks.
02:47This absolutely sucks.
02:48Well, it's only one week, so it's not a full-on Madden curse yet.
02:50Look, I've had-
02:51I'm not pretending to be a professional athlete.
02:53I had really bad plantar fasciitis, which bled into my Achilles.
02:57I mean, this is something you deal with for months, not weeks.
03:01Yeah.
03:02And it's just-
03:03Well, especially when you are an explosive change of direction athlete like he is.
03:07Everything in his game is predicated on jump cutting, slowing down, exploding, pushing
03:12onto that cut.
03:13Yeah.
03:14I mean, think about all those plays where they toss it to him.
03:16You got Banks and Trent leading the left way, and he goes, stop, cut, back through.
03:21And the burst and explosion, the way he gets narrow.
03:24Christian McCaffrey.
03:25Look, Roger Craig had a more comprehensive career.
03:28Frank had a more comprehensive Niner career.
03:30He's the best talent they've had at the position.
03:33With all respect to Joe the Jeff Perry and John Henry Johnson.
03:35Well, he's such a game changer because we watched the NFL over the weekend look like
03:39defenses were ahead of offenses in most cases.
03:42And now, obviously, this is a game where a lot of eyes, at minimum, were going to be
03:47on one quarterback because we haven't really seen Aaron play in two years.
03:51And now, in a way, this is what a lot of the negative voices about Brock Purdy have
03:58been waiting for.
03:59Let's see what the offense looks like without Christian McCaffrey.
04:02Whether he has one weapon, 50 weapons, people are always going to be waiting for this man's
04:07downfall.
04:08Honestly, Mark, I've come to the realization, whether you think he's good or not, the only
04:12way he can get everyone's approval on some of Brock Purdy, he has to be throwing to Mark,
04:17Dan, and Shaski every single drive all year with Matt DeHegan as his center and Lucas
04:23as his left tackle.
04:25No matter what he does, it will always come with the, yeah, but Shanahan, yeah, but Trent
04:29Williams.
04:30It's so unfair.
04:31It is so unfair.
04:32Name me a good quarterback that didn't have weapons.
04:34Name me a good, name me a Hall of Fame coach without a Hall of Fame quarterback.
04:38Well, name me a Hall of Fame quarterback without a good coach.
04:41There are few and far between.
04:43It's impossible.
04:44It really is.
04:45It's impossible to name a good quarterback without a good coach and without weapons.
04:47And so yeah, Brock Purdy's penalized for that until he makes 60 million.
04:51And then when he makes 60 million, whatever they have left, then maybe he'll be able to
04:55be judged fairly.
04:56I watched a lot of poor quarterback play yesterday, just a lot of poor quarterback play.
05:00And the thing that I think that, and I'm a guilty, I'll raise my hand, like throwing
05:04the ball and running it neck up.
05:07Are you intelligent?
05:08Pre and post snap.
05:09And I'm not talking about like book smarts.
05:10I'm talking football intelligence.
05:12Can you rhythmically throw guys open and read zone?
05:16First of all, that's absolutely true.
05:17But I think then you also have to have the body that keeps up with your brain.
05:22It's no different than what all of us experience in life when you're like, whoa, my brain still
05:27works at high school level when I'm on an outlet, but my body won't do it.
05:30That's what I'm watching for Aaron tonight, for instance, Kirk Cousins has got a great
05:34brain for the game.
05:35It looked yesterday like the body is not going to keep up with that brain.
05:39So if you're just joining us, the breaking news is Christian McCaffrey, a surprise inactive
05:45tonight for the 49ers.
05:47So that means Jordan Mason will handle the lion's share in the backfield.
05:51And obviously it is a complete game changer.
05:54As far as the offense is concerned, Joe Shasky from the morning roast is here as a fan stopped
05:59by and is hanging out a little bit as we break all this down.
06:02This one to me is super sexy for a variety of reasons.
06:05Aaron Rogers, top of the thing.
06:07I mean, he comes out with the flag last year in New York City and played three snaps, right?
06:11Yeah.
06:12The Jets thing is just amusing to watch from afar.
06:15It's got like a car crash kind of a thing, but I honestly have zero ill will toward like
06:19the New York Jets.
06:20Yeah.
06:21Green like the Cubs of the NFL kind of like, yeah, but even the Cubs had history with the
06:24Giants.
06:25So I didn't like the Cubs.
06:26Right.
06:27So, but I hear what you're going.
06:28Yeah.
06:29They're even more tortured because they're not even good enough to get to the playoffs.
06:30Exactly.
06:31And I look at what they've got going.
06:32Robert Sala is, he's playing for his career.
06:35Douglas is playing for his career.
06:37You normally don't get second swings when you whip this big.
06:40I look at the 49ers and the question's always like, Hey, can they keep it going?
06:44Can they keep it going?
06:45What does Brock look like without the all-stars?
06:47People are waiting for this man's demise.
06:49I've been circling this guy's name all year and I'm really interested to see, cause we're
06:53all quick to jump ahead.
06:54What's it, what's going to happen next year?
06:56Debo Samuel.
06:58This team needs a Debo Samuel tone setting moment early in the game.
07:04I would run that pop, jet sweep, whatever you call it, where it's him and sauce out
07:08on the end.
07:09I want to see Debo go right through sauce Gardner like he did Jalen Ramsey all those
07:13years against the Rams and set the tone physically because the interior of this defense is going
07:18to suffocate them without CMC.
07:20No doubt.
07:21They're going to stack the box.
07:22Well, especially you got a rookie guard and we all like Dominic Pooney, but we don't know
07:24how he's going to hold up in his first NFL start.
07:27And Trent Williams, I was telling Mark, you're going to see him suck and win tonight.
07:31If you get into a nine, 10, 11 play drive, the big fella in his 16th year is going to
07:36be getting fatigued at the end of the long drive.
07:38So without Christian McCaffrey now, I wonder if it doesn't change the game plan a little
07:43bit into more of a, of a run heavy approach, a full list of Niners inactives that has just
07:49been released.
07:50Christian McCaffrey, Josh Dobbs, who is the third quarterback designation.
07:54Gross Matos.
07:55We knew D winters.
07:57We knew that's a blow.
07:58Who Fungo we expected also center Ben Bartsch and Daryl Luter Jr.
08:03The cornerback.
08:04There is your list of inactives, but it is breathtaking that Christian McCaffrey is on
08:09that list.
08:10And this is an interesting matchup for our secondary.
08:13We've been touting them.
08:14Deomino Lenore, Travarious Ward, Travarious goes good against the bigger physical receivers.
08:19Mike Williams in him.
08:20I expect it be tangling Mike Williams.
08:22I think Mike Williams is a good player.
08:23He's always been hurt.
08:24And then you get Garrett Wilson, who's the slippery player.
08:27And you're going to have him go up against Deomino Lenore.
08:29I think this is a huge test for the secondary early on.
08:32And if there's a weakness in this defense, Rogers will exploit it.
08:36Rogers is the OC.
08:37It's not Nathaniel Hackett.
08:38He's not.
08:39But I wonder about Rogers and the rust.
08:41I mean, the last time he played was four snaps 364 days ago.
08:45And beyond that, he had a pretty downish year in Green Bay his last year.
08:49So I'm wondering about the rust of Aaron Rogers against a Niner defense.
08:53The week here, which you're correct, it was a week here for Aaron Rogers would have been
08:57far and away the greatest year any quarterback has ever had in New York Jets history.
09:02I was looking at the number like they've had one guy throw for over 25 touchdowns.
09:07One guy, one guy.
09:08Wow.
09:09I just I know that Niner fans always were just snake bit in the quarterback.
09:13My boy's wearing a freaking Mark Sanchez jersey.
09:15Yeah.
09:16Like he took them to the championship game twice.
09:18Well, that's the thing.
09:19I mean, this this franchise, at least in recent years, it feels almost Pittsburgh Steelers
09:24us recently where it's like their record ends up better than it should be based on the output
09:29they have.
09:30Remember, we looked at it last year.
09:33Absolute dreadful quarterback play found a way to be seven and ten and ten.
09:37They ended up like.
09:38And so I was Wilson, Zach Wilson, Wilson, who we all think stinks.
09:43And the same thing.
09:44Steelers yesterday.
09:45No offensive touchdowns.
09:46Want to know?
09:47Off we go.
09:48Are you going to play with them?
09:49Yeah.
09:50Well, I mean, he didn't.
09:51I mean, come on.
09:52He really did.
09:53In the end, he knew.
09:54Guys, I got to go.
09:55I got to go because I'm going to go.
09:56I got to take a tailgate and I got to go get my credential.
09:58Enjoy it.
09:59Go Niners.
10:00Let's overcome the CMC thing.
10:01Here we go.
10:02We'll see.
10:03Here we go.
10:04Joe Shasky.
10:05Joe Shasky.
10:06Morning Road stopping by.
10:07Joe Shasky.
10:08Shasky.
10:09Shasky.
10:10You're listening to 95.
10:11Seven.
10:12The game.
10:13KGMZ FM and HG1 San Francisco.
10:14An odyssey sports station.
10:15Always live on the free odyssey app.
10:16Twitch and YouTube.
10:17If you want to get your first NorCal credit union for a low rate auto loan, apply online
10:21or just ask for first NorCal financing at the dealer.
10:25We're going to stay with you here a little bit longer as we take this in and open it
10:30up to you.
10:31Eight at eight.
10:32Nine.
10:33Five.
10:34Seven.
10:35Nine.
10:36Five.
10:37Seventy.
10:38What does it mean now that Christian McCaffrey is missing this football game?
10:39And I would add if this is going to have a calf slash Achilles name to it and he is after
10:46missing all of camp, three to four weeks, still not ready to play tonight.
10:51Again, we don't know if there was a re-aggravation maybe, but either way, we've arrived at this
10:56point.
10:57How can we sit here and think that this is only about tonight?
11:00Like I think that's your first thought.
11:03Right.
11:04They got another game in six days.
11:05Six days.
11:06They got a game.
11:07And like, so is this now something where the 49ers might have to play a period of time
11:11without Christian?
11:12Number one.
11:13And number two, should they?
11:16Probably once we know a little bit more about the nature of the injury, should they consider
11:21letting Christian get a little bit more time on the shelf to make sure he is 100% right
11:27before he goes?
11:28Yeah.
11:29I would imagine that they're going to play him when he is 100% ready, which obviously
11:33isn't tonight.
11:34And so when he is ready, they're going to go ahead and play him.
11:37But knowing that it's a calf Achilles kind of an issue and the fact that he wasn't even
11:41able to give it a go tonight, that is troubling because as you mentioned throughout camp,
11:46it felt like they were just, you know, resting him on the shelf and it wasn't really a real
11:51thing.
11:52And, you know, you even mentioned that he was running around at practice and he was,
11:56you know, looking good.
11:57He's been running on the side for weeks.
11:59Yeah.
12:00On the side, running on the side.
12:01And then yet you get ready for an actual game and he can't go.
12:05So yeah, it's troubling.
12:06And you do have a game in six days from now.
12:08And so you start to think about this season already a little bit differently.
12:12Well, I tell you what, it never fails in the NFL.
12:17The whole world changes in an instant every single week.
12:21It never fails.
12:22You come out of this weekend of games and what do we have?
12:25We got a new story about Christian McCaffrey.
12:27We got Puka Nakua, no September, maybe more.
12:30You got Jordan Love, no September, maybe more.
12:34Everything in the NFC suddenly changes and beyond, you know, like here we are, the Bengals.
12:40Oh gosh, they're off to a terrible start again.
12:43So like everything changes on a dime and somehow some way, especially after all of the touches
12:51last year, you just had a feeling that Jordan Mason was going to have some sort of a more
12:58significant role this season.
13:00And in this particular case, it starts right away.
13:03He gets to start and it starts tonight.
13:05And that certainly is one thing that we talked about.
13:08And I was mentioning this before the Red and Gold Summit about the five things that you
13:12need to be a championship team.
13:14And one of them is health.
13:15And here we are where you're opening up the year and Trent Williams is going to play and
13:21Brandon Iyuk's going to play, but not a full game.
13:24And Christian McCaffrey is not going to play due to injury.
13:26And you don't have Drake Greenlaw and you don't have Talanoa Hufanga.
13:30So already your injury quest is starting out a little bit more difficult than it did
13:35last year.
13:36Spread dropping like a weight.
13:37I told you it went from four and a half to three and a half.
13:40Make it three.
13:41It is down to three.
13:42We'll see if the money that is no doubt flowing in actually pulls it down below a field goal.
13:48You're getting a feel of how important Christian McCaffrey is.
13:52It's a point and a half so far.
13:54888-957-9570 Willard and Dibbs live at the Hilton Santa Clara getting ready for the game
14:00which suddenly does have at least a bit of a cloud over it.
14:03Christian McCaffrey a surprise inactive for the game tonight.
14:08Let's go to Zach in Redwood City.
14:10Thank you for calling Willie and Dibby.
14:12What's up Zach?
14:13No, what's up guys?
14:15You guys broke the news to me.
14:17So rest in peace my fantasy football team because.
14:21I was on two and a half points with CMC left.
14:26Like what the hell, man?
14:27Yeah.
14:28This is a joke.
14:29Yeah, Zach.
14:30I mean, just I mean, we'll let you say some more for sure, but like there are fantasy
14:34hearts breaking all over the place tonight because of the nature of this.
14:39There's no one left to pick up the number one overall pick in most leagues and people
14:43were relying on him for a big game tonight and now they're going to get a big old goose.
14:47Yeah, it's incredible.
14:50Especially how how suppressed the Niners in the media made this feel to me as a Niners
14:56fan.
14:57Right.
14:58Like I thought it was no biggie, but now I'm a little concerned like most.
15:02I think that's what I was going to bring up.
15:06Yep.
15:07The point that I was going to bring up is so I have it on my tick tock reels, you know,
15:12Instagram reels.
15:13First of all, the holding calls in the championship, as well as us not knowing the overtime rules,
15:19which is something the media that is media brought up right after the game as to why
15:23we lost.
15:24And I think, you know, we still receive if we don't receive the ball and kick it.
15:30I think I think we win that game.
15:32So there's my point, guys.
15:33I hope all is well.
15:34Zach, thanks.
15:35I mean, first off, you know, I think for the most part, most of us have moved beyond the
15:39Super Bowl, at least to the excitement of tonight.
15:41And I'm one of the weirdos out there that still thinks even though it wasn't a good
15:46look, and even though I can fully understand the people who say with the overtime rules
15:51in the playoffs, you want the ball second, I can still wrap my head around a couple of
15:56things with regard to taking the ball first in overtime.
15:59A, your defense was totally gassed.
16:02There's something circumstantial there.
16:04And B, like to me, there's something interesting about going down there and putting a touchdown
16:09on the board, maybe even go for two and stick that to the other team and be like, that's
16:13it.
16:14You've got to go.
16:16You've got to do this thing.
16:17I get it if people think the opposite, for sure.
16:19But my, I don't know, my overwhelming thought on that is, come on, it's a new season.
16:24Yeah, it's a new season.
16:25And I'm not going to sit here at the Hilton with kick time here in about an hour and 10
16:29minutes and dwell about last year's Super Bowl failure or the Super Bowl failure that
16:35happened before it or the fact that, you know, they blew a 28 to 3 lead when he was the coordinator
16:40in Atlanta.
16:41That's not what the opener is about.
16:43It's opening night.
16:44And for me, it's more interesting, more compelling to talk about Christian McCaffrey, who has
16:49been ruled inactive for this game and how things are going to, you know, go from there.
16:54And I'm looking at our fantasy league and the owner of Christian McCaffrey is starting
16:59Isaac Garendo at running back.
17:01Yeah.
17:02I mean, that's what the who's team is.
17:05Patrick Mahomes.
17:06Who is that?
17:07Lucas?
17:08I don't know.
17:09Who is that?
17:10No, no, no joke.
17:11I'm getting texts from inside the building from my sons because Jude has Christian McCaffrey
17:16in the league and only needed 10 points.
17:19He's like, go pick up Kyle.
17:20You sick for him.
17:21You got to go get juice.
17:23It's his only option.
17:24Garendo.
17:25Yeah.
17:26I mean, I don't know.
17:27I, you know, is Garendo going to be the backup running back tonight?
17:30I mean, maybe.
17:31I guess he is.
17:32It's probably going to be a lot of Debo.
17:33I would imagine Debo is going to probably carry the ball a healthy amount.
17:36I mean, are you going to line him up as an actual halfback?
17:39Yeah.
17:40At times.
17:41You've done it before.
17:42You've done it before, but it's, you know, I would hope that you, you like the running
17:47backs.
17:48You have enough to do things a little bit of a different way.
17:50Jordan Mason can play football now.
17:51Yeah.
17:52I know he's not the past blocker that Christian is, but let's see this man.
17:56You're Kyle Shanahan.
17:57You, you know, you know how to call a football game when you've got this, that, or the other
18:01situationally.
18:03So if that means that George Kittle has got to be a little bit more of a blocker tonight
18:07at times, then that's what it means.
18:10But I also think that Jordan Mason is absolutely capable of going out there and giving you
18:1575 plus yards on the ground tonight.
18:17I really firmly believe that.
18:19Yeah.
18:20I don't know what the yardage is.
18:21I don't even think it matters what the yardage is, but you've got to have an ability to run
18:24the football.
18:25And we've talked about this a bunch with Kyle Shanahan and how he likes to do it 50, 50
18:30even split run to pass.
18:31Well, now you don't have your bell cow.
18:33So how are you going to be successful running the ball?
18:36It's going to have to be doing it in a different fashion.
18:39And if it means a little bit of Garendo, if it means Debo Samuel, certainly Jordan
18:43Mason's going to get a healthy dose of carries.
18:46And you've got to go out there and find a way to stay balanced because that's what you
18:51do as a 49er team.
18:52What a gut punch though.
18:53Yeah.
18:54There's no, there's no way around this.
18:56What a gut punch for the, for the 49ers and for the fan bases, you start this thing.
19:01But then again, it's kind of like you say, and NFL teams know this, players know this,
19:07they always cruise around with a next man up mentality because there's no other choice.
19:13That's the way this game is played.
19:14You know, you hate when it happens before the whole thing even starts, but that's the
19:19way they feel about it.
19:20And you know, the Niners remain the favorite in this football game and I still expect them
19:24to be able to go out there and move the football.
19:26Yeah.
19:27And the Jets are not going to go easy on the Niners because they don't have this professional
19:32football.
19:33Jeez.
19:34You know, man, you know, we're going to let Mason have a couple of carries cause we feel
19:37bad.
19:38Now this is the way it goes in the NFL and so you're Kyle Shanahan and everyone wants
19:42to laud him as this genius.
19:44Okay.
19:45Genius.
19:46Go out there and game plan around the fact that you don't have a guy who was top five
19:50in the MVP last year.
19:51Well, I mean, I don't know if that's fair.
19:53Like you know, again, nothing's fair or unfair.
19:55It's football.
19:56You have to go out there and win with who you have.
19:58Yes you do.
19:59But I'm not going to go suddenly now, Oh Kyle, you got to score 31 points or you're a dork.
20:03Like I mean, not just win the game.
20:05Yeah.
20:06It's the same, but I mean, listen, and for those frustrated with the idea that they kept
20:10this until the end, like that's what you got to do to Robert Sala.
20:15You don't want to tell Robert Sala.
20:17You don't even want to insinuate that there's a problem with Christian McCaffrey.
20:21You want that team game planning for Christian McCaffrey as long as possible.
