00:00That was him, the logo.
00:0325 years old, as a sign that Suhakam is now 25 years old.
00:09Thank you very much.
00:10There are a few unresolved problems.
00:12One of them is the issue of police brutality.
00:18The head of the police in the country is present.
00:20And the head of the police in the country, among those who have reached out to me,
00:24to conduct an investigation,
00:27a study,
00:28to avoid some of it is true,
00:32some of it is just a perception.
00:34But to correct the situation,
00:37by making sure that the rules are more transparent,
00:40to avoid abuse of power.
00:43The one who investigates is the police.
00:48The one who brings down the law is the judge.
00:51So, before he brings down the law,
00:54they shouldn't be punished first.
00:57I'm saying this from my experience.
01:00But Dato' Isyamuddin is one of those who defended
01:03when he was beaten up.
01:05So, it means he hasn't been punished.
01:07At that time, he wasn't even declared.
01:09He was beaten up, half dead.
01:11So, when people talk about
01:13there is a concern about
01:16death and lock-up,
01:19you don't need to convince me.
01:21Because I know what we feel.
01:24And what we feel is
01:26we just seem helpless
01:28when you're assaulted to near death in the lock-up
01:31or some leading to their demise.
01:37So, precisely again for this reason,
01:40we need to support all efforts necessary
01:44to protect the suspect, convicts, whatever,
01:48in the lock-up.
01:49And I'm pleased to say that
01:51both Minister of Home Affairs
01:53and the Inspector General Police
01:55support the idea.
01:57Although their concern is also my concern.
02:00It's the perception.
02:02Not everyone coming with some cuts
02:05or injuries
02:07or even death in the lock-up
02:09unnecessarily due to police abuse.
02:11That is why we need proper procedures
02:15and protection.
02:18And this requires, of course,
02:21the full study and endorsement of Suhakam
02:26to take it up again.
02:28I suppose the best thing is to discuss with the police,
02:33which we partly have been done,
02:36and visit the lock-ups.
02:39I can join you
02:40because I'm quite familiar with some of these areas.
02:43So, I believe this is one thing
02:46that my friends have told me
02:50about the need to take action.
