Louis Hayes was clocked driving at 140MPH on the A1(M) by a speed camera van in January.

When arrested for dangerous driving, he not only claimed that he thought he had been doing “80 or 90”, but also that driving at twice the motorway speed limit was “careless, but not dangerous”.

30-year-old Hayes has since appeared in court where he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was disqualified from driving for 12 months, and must pass an extended driving test before he can get his license back.

00:00Did you see the speed time advantage you passed him at?
00:02No.
00:04If you did, would you have slowed down?
00:08Potentially, yeah. I didn't even know how fast I was going.
00:11Honestly to God, I did not know I was going that fast.
00:15I don't know if my colleagues explained, but we've had information to say that this vehicle
00:21has been driving at 140mph on the A1 at some point in the day.
00:30Have you been driving this vehicle on the A1 today?
00:33Erm, I don't know. I haven't had any calls from it, no.
00:38I've probably already asked you this the other day, but nobody else has had access to this vehicle
00:42this afternoon.
00:49Because I'll be honest with you, it's been clocked at 140mph on the A1
00:56by a speed cam van.
00:59Have you been driving on the A1?
01:01Not from what I recall, mate, no.
01:03Not from what you recall?
01:04Right, so let's just go with now and then, mate.
01:06I'm under arrest, aren't I?
01:084051. You're under arrest, alright, on suspicion of dangerous driving, OK?
01:13So you do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you do not mention one question
01:17or something which relates to that in court. Anything you do say, it may have given an evidence.
01:21Alright?
01:22You've got it out of your pocket, Lewis.
01:24I cannot catch a break.
01:27Do you know the speed limit of a motorway for a car?
01:30Yeah.
01:31What is that?
01:3270mph.
01:33OK. How busy were the roads?
01:35It wasn't busy at all, really.
01:37OK.
01:38There was no cars there, no cars at all in front of me, as far as I could see.
01:42How would you describe your driving, driving at 140mph?
01:47Yeah, surprising. I didn't think I was going that fast.
01:52I wasn't being careless because I was paying attention, but when you say I was going that fast,
01:58I'm more scared of how fast I was. I didn't realise I was going that fast.
02:01OK.
02:02When you're in a car that fast and you put your foot down and you're there within seconds,
02:07I wouldn't really say it's dangerous, I'd say it's more careless of someone's putting that position in the car,
02:12it's like so fast.
02:13It felt like I was going maybe 80, 90 a swing.
02:16Which, to be fair, you still put it in the speed limit.
02:18Yeah, but it didn't feel like I was...
02:20So Lewis, similar to things, you say you're driving careless but not dangerous in your opinion, just to clarify.
02:26Yes.
02:27Careless, not dangerous, OK.
02:29What would make that dangerous?
02:31Is it out of intention, he's paying?
02:34So we're still going with careless, not dangerous in your opinion?
02:37Yeah.
02:38OK. So, we've got no further questions for you, Lewis.
