00:00Deep in the Brazilian Bahia state, the colonial town of Lençóis.
00:21What animals do you think are in these trees?
00:29Monkeys.
00:30It's got to be a monkey.
00:31I want to see a sloth.
00:32The gateway to the Chapada Diamantina National Park.
00:36A rugged plateau, bounded by tabletop mountains, canyons and caves, sprawling across an area
00:43larger than Wales, home to the highly intelligent Atlantic marmoset.
00:48That doodly little monkey call noise.
00:53And the second checkpoint of the race.
00:57Wow, how beautiful is this?
01:05Having travelled over 1,500 kilometres.
01:08I feel like I'm walking on the moon.
01:10For two teams a chance to recharge.
01:12Oh, that's flat.
01:14Oh, it's deep here though, are you ready?
01:18Sculpted from ancient sandstone by millions of years of erosion, this area dates back
01:24to the time when South America and Africa were joined.
01:28Cold, man.
01:30Sorry, but isn't it absolutely crazy that the bottom two are now the top two?
01:36We've almost played the reverse card in just the first ten seconds.
01:40I can't believe it's swung around like this.
01:44With Scott and Sam not yet at the checkpoint, Geoff and Freddie are now leading, over 15
01:50hours ahead of their closest rivals, Kola and Mary Ellen.
01:55Considering where we both started the leg, it makes you realise actually that anything
01:59is possible.
02:00I wanted to open up that book and not be dead last, leaving a day after everyone else.
02:06It gave me nightmares, you know, coming last.
02:09We're right back in it and I'm over the moon, I'm chuffed.
02:12Didn't realise how hard it was though.
02:13Yeah.
02:14As hard as it is going to be, the fact that I'm going to be on the road stressing about
02:17bus times, I feel like tomorrow we could do something for Mother's Day.
02:22When we set off, both of us need to consider exactly how Fred's going to do something fitting
02:26for his mum, so that you feel like you've marked the occasion.
02:31My mum, she passed when I was 15.
02:36Usually by tomorrow, like on Mother's Day, all of my brothers and sisters, they celebrate
02:40and reminisce.
02:41Her mum's been like a mum to me, so our trees is my favourite one.
02:45Mums are part of the race.
02:46Do it for the mums tomorrow, shall we?
02:47Do it for the mums.
02:48Mumsy.
02:49For the mums.
03:00Everyone's having a party.
03:02Following their adventure along the Atlantic coast...
03:05Scott, there.
03:06Made it.
03:07Oh, wow.
03:08Scott and Sam are the last team to reach Lensoyce.
03:11We're a bit hot.
03:14There we go.
03:15As expected.
03:16Wow.
03:17Geoff and Freddie a day ago.
03:19Wow.
03:21Over 27 hours behind the race leaders.
03:25It's all well and good going.
03:27It doesn't matter.
03:28When you see it in the book, it matters a bit.
03:32OK.
03:33Potter and Mary Ellen got a real shift on, didn't they?
03:37Bonjita.
03:39Frontrunners Geoff and Freddie...
03:41Obrigado.
03:42..are first to find out where they're heading next.
03:44Go on, Fred.
03:45Your third checkpoint is Sao Paulo.
03:48I think that's a big city, Fred.
03:50A journey of 2,400km to Brazil's beating heart,
03:55the buzzing metropolis of Rio de Janeiro.
03:59It's a long journey.
04:00It's a long journey.
04:01It's a long journey.
04:02It's a long journey.
04:03It's a long journey.
04:04It's a long journey.
04:06The buzzing metropolis of Sao Paulo.
04:10Located in the south-east region,
04:12home to almost 12 million people,
04:14this is the largest megacity in the southern hemisphere.
04:19Teams must negotiate the country's biggest
04:21and wealthiest urban areas.
04:24A leg that could have sizeable impacts
04:26on their diminishing budgets.
04:32Freddie, get the map out.
04:34Oh, that's a long way.
04:35South-west of Rio de Janeiro.
04:37That's a long way south.
04:38That is probably from England to Greece.
04:43To reach the checkpoint,
04:44teams could head west via the modern capital, Brasilia,
04:48offering lucrative job opportunities
04:50and a reliable transport network.
04:53South, via Belo Horizonte,
04:55following the most direct route,
04:57but with fewer travel options,
04:59it could be a risk.
05:02Or travel east,
05:03tempted by popular carnival destinations
05:06such as Salvador and Rio de Janeiro.
05:09It's the longest but most well-connected tourist path.
05:14I just don't know.
05:16But I want to make sure that before the end of the day
05:19we get to do something for your mum.
05:22Salvador, Fred, is known for its sunsets
05:25and I think we'd possibly get there today.
05:30Oh, that's a beautiful bird.
05:32Um, you with me?
05:33Yeah.
05:35You don't want to talk about this, do you?
05:37I wouldn't mind walking through their towns
05:39and the cobbled streets and that.
05:44My mum was Jade Goody.
05:47I guess some people know her as the Big Brother star.
05:53I lost my mum when I was four due to cervical cancer.
05:58And that was on Mother's Day,
06:00which is really hard.
06:06If you could go anywhere
06:07to feel like you've took some time out for mum,
06:09where would it be?
06:10It's the sunset.
06:11I think all that sounds really nice.
06:13That will make you feel like
06:14you've done something really special for her.
06:16Let's do it.
06:18I don't really like showing my emotions.
06:20I don't even really speak to my dad much about my mum either.
06:23I just avoid it.
06:25I prefer to bottle it up.
06:27Shall we get the 9 o'clock arriving at 4.30 to Salvador?
06:32I don't want to feel like I'm a burden to them.
06:35Obrigado.
06:36Fred.
06:37Geoff and Freddie hope to make the most of their day,
06:40planning a short 400km hop to the coastal city of Salvador.
06:45Looking forward to that sunset now.
06:47Yeah, it's going to be lovely.
06:49It's going to be real beautiful stuff.
06:51It's so hard, isn't it?
06:53It's harder than I thought.
06:54We both went the same kind of road, so we feel you.
06:57Still at the checkpoint, previous race leaders Kelly and Jeremy...
07:01Coming third, it was a bit of a blow.
07:03We were hoping second.
07:04We were hoping second.
07:05He's still reading the map and the route we've just done
07:08to see where he went wrong.
07:09..followed by fiancés Scott and Sam.
07:12It's a hard day.
07:13It's a hard day.
07:14It's a hard day.
07:15It's a hard day.
07:16It's a hard day.
07:17It's a hard day.
07:18It's a hard day.
07:19It's a hard day.
07:21A whole day behind.
07:23We're at the bottom of the pack.
07:25It's annoyed me more than I thought it would, being last.
07:28Embarrassing.
07:29We need to get a move on next time.
07:32With all their rivals still in Lensoy's,
07:35Geoff and Freddie are fast approaching the city of Salvador.
07:41Maybe mum's putting things in place
07:43and pushing us in the direction of where we need to go.
07:46It's a lovely idea.
07:47Guarding over the entrance to the iconic Bay of All Saints,
07:51the Farol de Barra Lighthouse has stood tall since the late 1600s.
07:56An unwavering beacon of hope,
07:58it has guided countless vessels to safe harbour for over 300 years.
08:05We made it.
08:07Every night as the sun dips low,
08:09crowds flock to the base of the lighthouse
08:11for a spectacular sunset ritual,
08:13making it one of Salvador's most popular activities.
08:17And one of Salvador's most beloved traditions.
08:20This place is mad.
08:21It's like every day there's a different view.
08:23I just want to get in the water.
08:25Like one year in Brighton on Mother's Day,
08:27I think it was, we just jumped straight in.
08:32I want to go over there.
08:34It's lively over there.
08:35That's part of the experience as well.
08:37OK, come on then.
08:38Come on, go where you want, darling,
08:40and let's get there quick.
08:42Ready?
08:53Thank you, Mother Nature.
09:03A lot of my memories that I have of my mum
09:06have come from, like, watching a documentary.
09:09YouTube clips, newspapers.
09:13They're not my memories.
09:18Oh, man.
09:19You need to get in the sea.
09:22I don't really remember...
09:26..being held.
09:27Yeah, I don't really remember being held by my mum.
09:34If I had more memories of her,
09:37it would have made it a whole lot harder for me.
09:44But I think I would have rathered that
09:47than not really remember the things
09:50that I had done with my mum.
09:56It's just life, really,
09:59and I've kind of accepted that.
10:02Are you nervous?
10:04Do I have a nervous disposition?
10:06Yeah, the sweat on your forehead, love.
10:08Cola and Mary-Ellen's checkpoint stay is over.
10:12And they're 15 hours behind Geoff and Freddy.
10:17It's a little bit of a roller coaster,
10:19but it's just a little bit of a roller coaster.
10:21And I think it's just a little bit of a rollercoaster.
10:24I think it's a little bit of a rollercoaster.
10:26It's just a little bit of a rollercoaster.
10:28It's just a little bit of a rollercoaster.
10:30Sao Paolo?
10:32Well, Sao Paolo's off the rails.
10:34Is this all Brazil?
10:36This place is bomb, man.
10:38With no time to spare,
10:39the cousins need to find onward connections out this evening.
10:43Do you know of big stations between Bahia and Sao Paolo?
10:48Yeah, Salvador. OK.
10:50If there's a cab.
10:51Quanto gusto?
10:521,600.
10:541,600.
10:56We're not paying that money.
10:59Ciao, ciao. Thank you for everything.
11:01Oh, my God, the pressure's on.
11:03They rule out paying over £200 for a taxi to Salvador.
11:07If we can get a bus tonight, that would be ideal.
11:10Chancing their luck, they bump into some fellow travellers.
11:14Right, lads.
11:16Can you help us get to Salvador?
11:18I mean, you've just missed the bus.
11:20Just missed it. Oh, is it?
11:22And when is the earliest bus tomorrow?
11:24The bus at 9am tomorrow.
11:26OK. See you later, lads, yeah?
11:28Cool. Thank you.
11:30Right, we need to make peace that we might be staying in Ensoita tonight.
11:34And then get the bus in the morning? Yeah.
11:36So we have a look in that hostel.
11:38To be honest, I don't get anything.
11:40Maybe the church will take us in.
11:42Hola. Do you have two beds?
11:44Aye, aye, aye, man.
11:46Nicola is a bit annoyed that we've spent money on accommodation.
11:50I'll take the single this time.
11:52We thought it was best to wait it out and take the bus tomorrow
11:55and alleviate all stress of paying extortionate prices and taxes.
12:03We've just got to be careful with our money now.
12:16Right, Sao Paulo is here.
12:18OK, we're quite far away.
12:20So I think we go from Brasilia.
12:22Do you want to go to Rio? That doesn't make sense.
12:24Kelly and husband Jeremy are next to leave.
12:27Almost a whole day behind the race leaders.
12:30I can't believe we've done all of Brasil and now we're down to Rio.
12:33We're not going to do it.
12:35But we're doing a race. I'm not doing the coast again.
12:38That was a nightmare. I really want to go very fast.
12:40I mean, let's be honest, Jeremy,
12:42the only thing you want to see in Brasil is an empty guest book.
12:45Wow! Very clean, all clean.
12:47You know what that feeling is.
12:49Yeah, I know it, but I know what is to be lost to and I don't like it.
12:54I do miss the competition in my life.
12:56I've been competing in judo for more than 20 years.
12:59I'm black belt.
13:01My dream was to do the Olympic Games
13:03and I gave up judo around eight years ago,
13:06around the time I met Kelly.
13:08So now it's not really a part of my life anymore.
13:10I chose the last leg.
13:12It didn't work out really, did it?
13:14So I'm going to take your lead on this.
13:17So now, because I'm not doing any tournament anymore,
13:20so I need a challenge.
13:22I will do everything I can to win
13:24and it's really important for me to see how I will do this race.
13:27So if we do Brasilia, one...
13:30This one.
13:32..or Uberlandia with connection to Sao Paulo.
13:34Straight to Sao Paulo. It's the most direct route.
13:36What do you think? If it makes you happy, let's do it.
13:38I will be depressed if I go back, if I see the coast again.
13:41I know, I know. Too much.
13:43Jeremy plans a 1,000km journey to Brasilia,
13:47utilising the fast road to the well-connected capital.
13:50I've been sacked from being the navigator.
13:52So we're going to head to Brasilia because it is the capital city.
13:55We need to make up some time.
13:57I've got to sometimes let him take the lead.
13:59So, yeah, this is Jeremy's leg,
14:02so we'll do what Jeremy wants to do.
14:04Can't let Geoff and Freddie have a 20-hour lead on us.
14:0722.
14:09Do you want to get some breakfast?
14:12I think we've made the worst choice.
14:14When do we ever know if we've made the right choice?
14:16Despite leaving the night before Kelly and Jeremy,
14:19Kola and Mary-Ellen are a mere 400m from the last checkpoint
14:24and yet to settle on a route.
14:26Hello. Do you know how to get to Sao Paulo?
14:30With the lowest remaining funds,
14:32the cousins opted for budget-friendly accommodation
14:35over a pricey taxi out of Lençois.
14:38You're going to Sao Paulo? Yes.
14:40You can go through the interstates. Yeah, yeah.
14:43I want to go to Rio. There's Copacabana beach.
14:47Yes, Rio is really nice.
14:49It's very impressive. Yeah.
14:52Yes. I'm sold.
14:55Rio, obviously, will be more like us doing things that we actually love.
15:00Me and Kola, growing up, it was, like, one big family.
15:04Like, we were merged, essentially.
15:06Like, my mum would ring Aunty Gina going,
15:08Mary's at yours for the week.
15:10Kola would stay at my house months.
15:12We were just, like, one big blended family, to be honest.
15:15Irish mum, Nigerian dad.
15:17It was so much fun. Food, music, stories, dance.
15:22I'd love to see Rio, but are we going to Rio?
15:25Because it's, like, it's trendy to go Rio.
15:28Do you know what I mean?
15:30Kola gets carried away, likes to party, and so do I.
15:34But I'm going to have to rein us in.
15:36It is a race, and we've got to keep on going.
15:39Shall we rule out Rio?
15:41Also, there's a job in Porto Seguro.
15:44Staff needed in Bath.
15:46And good connections to Belo Horizonte.
15:48That would be a faster route. Yeah.
15:50So you want to go to Porto Seguro,
15:52and then go to Belo Horizonte, on to Sao Paulo?
15:56I want to win, not just for me, but for Kola.
15:59I will be bad cop, but I don't want to let him down,
16:02and I don't want to disappoint myself.
16:05So there will be quite a bit of pressure.
16:09OK, are you happy? Yeah.
16:12Let's get tickets.
16:14Mary Ellen has her sights set.
16:17Head south-east to work in the coastal town of Porto Seguro,
16:21then risking cutting inland via Belo Horizonte.
16:25249. For both.
16:28Cash?
16:31God, I don't know if we've made the right choice.
16:37Off we go again.
16:39Scott and Sam are the final team to leave the checkpoint.
16:42I just don't want to be last.
16:44Trailing 27 hours behind.
16:48I've got a sore plan. OK.
16:51We went inland, then we're travelling big distances,
16:54and hopefully it allows us to just speed, speed, speed.
16:57I think it's knocked to my confidence now, being last.
17:00I'm too scared to say a plan,
17:02because I don't want it to be the wrong plan.
17:05I'll take this leg, then. All right.
17:07So I think one of the advantages of us leaving this time of day
17:11is that maybe we can work, get some cash,
17:14get an overnight travel to Guayanua,
17:17work, travel overnight, race to the checkpoint.
17:20Just playing devil's advocate here,
17:22I don't think that's as near as we think.
17:25Sam calls me worst-case scenario,
17:28because I'll always look on the darker side, not the lighter side.
17:33I'm a natural-born warrior.
17:36A bit anxious. The glass is always half empty.
17:40I've got this. Trust me.
17:42Over to you.
17:44I'm just going to take Sam's lead on this.
17:46He seems to be pretty clear about what we should do.
17:49To haul them back into the race,
17:51Sam plans a 1,300-kilometre overnight leap to the city of Guayana.
17:57There's a job, so if we can rush out of here,
18:00earn some money, travel overnight to Guayana,
18:03I think the race is properly on.
18:05Hola. Taxi?
18:07Can we go now? Of course.
18:09We need to be there by one.
18:111pm. 1pm.
18:13We need to get a shift on.
18:15Vamos. Vamos.
18:17Love a man that can drive.
18:19Let's just hope that luck's on our side
18:22and I flippin' hope there's a bus overnight tonight.
18:34We'll go wherever you want, Fred.
18:36Do you choose?
18:37See how much tickets to Rio de Janeiro are.
18:40Geoff and Freddie are leaving Salvador,
18:42taking advantage of the well-connected coastal route.
18:45It's not every day you get to go to Rio.
18:47It is a bucket, this place.
18:49To Victoria, 1,074.
18:52Oh!
18:53We can then go to Rio.
18:55They are following a path avoided by all their rivals,
18:58a colossal journey of over 2,150km,
19:02on the longest road to the checkpoint via Rio de Janeiro.
19:06Let's move the market way.
19:09Oh, Dad, these are the ones I would like. Look.
19:14You're such a wally.
19:15I like the little shell necklaces.
19:18I'm not great with money, you know this.
19:21So I will need a bit of advice.
19:24No-one's ever great with money when they're your age.
19:28Don't forget to match your knitted vest.
19:30Yeah, they're lovely.
19:32I buy stupid things.
19:33Like that time I bought a white coat.
19:36Why am I wearing...
19:37One, white is not my colour. I spill everything.
19:42And I bought a white coat and marked it.
19:44On the train, two days later.
19:47Little watch.
19:48Come on, man.
19:50It would be really easy for me to take charge of the map, the money.
19:53But that's what we've been doing for the last however many years,
19:56is let me take the responsibility, son,
19:58just so we're assured that everything's going to be as it should be.
20:03Did you get a kettle?
20:04A kettle?
20:08Dad's raring to go.
20:10Yeah, spend a bit of our budget with our ASEAN.
20:13I got a key ring for my nana.
20:16And someone else a present.
20:18And that's only, like, what, ten quid?
20:21No, probably.
20:26Fred, how do you think we're doing on the budget?
20:28We had three, two, six, eight.
20:30Oh, that's not a lot of high-highs left, is it?
20:33I bought this at the bus stop, so that's also...
20:37We haven't been writing down our spendings,
20:39That's because you're taking things out of budget
20:41and not actually even telling me.
20:44What did you spend on the presents and your necklace?
20:48Key ring, six Reyes, 12 Reyes.
20:54So that's another 18.
20:57105.
20:58105.
20:59That is, like, quite a lot.
21:01Do you not think, because it's our budget,
21:03that I deserve to be, you know,
21:06It's our budget that I deserve to be asked?
21:10Yeah, of course.
21:12Why didn't you?
21:14Because exactly that I thought was our budget.
21:19It creates trust issues, doesn't it?
21:22Apparently.
21:24It doesn't lend itself to, like, creating good, sort of, teamwork?
21:30Yeah.
21:32As I chipped into the budget,
21:35I'm going to do some work while you relax in Rio.
21:39Watch me.
21:40I appreciate that.
21:45Can you call Obrigada?
21:48Scott and Sam are running late.
21:50Having underestimated the distance to the job,
21:53their employment is now in peril.
21:56Hello.
22:02It's OK?
22:03Yeah.
22:04No.
22:05No, it's not OK?
22:06No, OK.
22:07So, that's not worked out.
22:11The couple arrive at the town of Itabaraba.
22:14Six hours into their leg,
22:16they're still only 140km from where they set off.
22:20Hello.
22:22Hello.
22:23Everything's closed.
22:25The bus driver's there.
22:26Now, I don't want to interrupt him having food.
22:28That's OK. We're in a race.
22:30Sorry to disturb you.
22:32We need to go to Goenia.
22:35No.
22:36No.
22:37Not today?
22:38No.
22:40Oh, this has messed up our plans.
22:42Let's try and ask more people.
22:45Hello.
22:47Any today?
22:49Erm...
22:54Let's just try and find the first bus out of here tomorrow
22:57and then we go on.
23:00Tomorrow?
23:01Nine o'clock.
23:02It's a 25-hour bus.
23:03Wow.
23:04Let's just do it.
23:05Yeah?
23:06Yeah.
23:07See?
23:08Dos.
23:091,260.
23:11It's the most expensive bus that we've had.
23:15We're two hours from where we started
23:18and we're not leaving until nine o'clock tomorrow morning.
23:21We are staying in the same place for 24 hours, essentially,
23:24from where we've left the checkpoint.
23:26Seems a waste of time.
23:28After committing to their biggest spend of the race so far...
23:31Hola.
23:32Hola.
23:33Room for two.
23:34190 reais.
23:37Thank you. Obrigada.
23:39..another hit to their finances.
23:42I thought today was going to be really easy.
23:44I feel almost back to square one.
23:48Let's go out, maybe get some work.
23:51I don't know anything about this area or where we are.
23:53We're just near the station where we've been for ages.
23:55Well, don't ask, don't get.
23:57Because we do need to pick up some Brazilian money
23:59because that was a big blow to the budget.
24:02One more day like this will break us.
24:04Yes.
24:05And I also feel that we can't win now.
24:14I think we can do this in four days.
24:16Kelly and Jeremy have reached the transport hub of Ceabra.
24:19Hola. Brasilia?
24:24Ah, 3.40 in the morning.
24:26..forking out on their most expensive bus of the race so far.
24:30Obrigado.
24:31We are spending a lot, babe.
24:32I don't think we've got a lot of options.
24:34So, if we're getting it at three,
24:36we're going to want to have a shower
24:38and you don't really want to check into a hotel, do you?
24:41This is really, really, really expensive.
24:43We'll destroy the budget in two days.
24:46I've always been on a budget,
24:48but when I met Kelly, all of this had changed.
24:51It was more luxury and it was quite amazing.
24:54I don't forget where I come from.
24:57And I think it would be more easy for me to do this adventure than Kelly.
25:03The pad and pen is out. This is not good.
25:08He's not happy, but we've got to get a taxi every now and again.
25:11We have to get on a bus and travel
25:13and we have to have somewhere to stay and we have to eat and drink.
25:16So, sometimes I just think it's like we can't not do those things.
25:20The prices are getting higher and higher.
25:23Our budget for the day is £40 and today I already spent £120.
25:27If we work in Brasilia, maybe we'll make some money back.
25:30We're going to the capital. Lots of job opportunities.
25:34I think my plan is still good
25:36and hopefully with a job tomorrow we can make some money.
25:40We've literally got a little pack of biscuits,
25:43a bottle of water, 17 hours on this bus.
25:47It's insane.
25:49I'm going to be out there.
25:51Jeremy's route better pay off.
26:02Did you bring your CV? No, I've never had a CV.
26:05After the big city bus fares ate a hole in the budget,
26:08Scott and Sam are hoping to replenish their funds.
26:11If we can get a little bit of money and recoup some of it,
26:15then we'll be happy.
26:17Although I feel the options are slightly limited.
26:20Scott's a bit of a pessimist.
26:22Our outlook in life are slightly different.
26:25I'm always optimistic.
26:27I'm always looking for the best case
26:29and always what you can get out of a situation.
26:32Am I asking? Yeah, you're asking.
26:34Bom dia. Hello.
26:37Can we sweep the floors for you for 40 reais?
26:40No. No.
26:42Negativity will stick in Scott's mind
26:45and for me it's having to turn that around, picking back up.
26:49We're looking for some work to get money.
26:55In there?
26:57Yeah.
26:59How much?
27:02Si.
27:04I'll take anything right now.
27:07Hola. Hola.
27:09Oh, it's hot.
27:11Si?
27:15I'm off to clean the toilet, I think.
27:17Good luck.
27:19Ah, OK.
27:21Andrea. Andrea.
27:23Nice to meet you.
27:25No. No?
27:31Sam is like his mum.
27:33He bloomin' loves a clean, so this is probably him in his element.
27:37Sometimes his mum will come round from Wales just to clean our house
27:41and then he'll do it again.
27:45Let's empty the dirty tissues.
27:48The kitchen is very hot.
27:50Scott's going to struggle with that because he's a sweater.
27:55Out of all the new things I thought we might try in Brazil,
27:58this wasn't it.
28:01Hey, Andrea.
28:03Thank you so much. Thank you.
28:05We've got 50 each.
28:07I think they could tell we were sad and took pity on us.
28:11I feel I let Scott down today because I said,
28:13trust me, and within the first hour,
28:16the wheels come off and it all comes crashing down.
28:20But I feel as if we'll wake up positive.
28:23We've got a plan tomorrow. We're getting out of here.
28:27Oh, thank you so much.
28:30Oh, wow!
28:32And I'm hoping that the rest of the route will be positive.
28:38I'm glad we've got a hotel room tonight,
28:40that we can get a decent night's sleep,
28:42cos we have got a 24-hour bus ahead of us.
28:44Yeah, no stopping.
28:46It's the longest we've ever done.
28:57This feels so different to anywhere we've been so far, doesn't it?
29:02Now 1,000km closer to the checkpoint,
29:05Kelly and Jeremy have travelled through the night
29:08to reach Brazil's capital.
29:10Wow, I've never seen a cathedral that looks like that.
29:16A unique experiment in urban planning,
29:18this futuristic city boasts large plazas,
29:22stretching between bold geometric buildings
29:25designed by modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer.
29:28Jeremy's gone, he's in.
29:30He's already praying to get to checkpoint on time.
29:42As the most religiously diverse nation on the continent,
29:45Brazil claims to have the world's largest Catholic population,
29:49with over 120 million followers.
29:52My first job was working in a cake shop
29:55next to Rochester Cathedral,
29:57and there was this big advert on how to become a nun,
30:00and I thought, God, what a lovely life.
30:02I could just wear a habit, make cheese, crochet all day,
30:07no stress, it was definitely an option.
30:11Then I became a page three girl and it all went downhill.
30:17You will burn in hell.
30:19Come on, let's go back to the race.
30:21Let's go.
30:24At the moment, money is our religion.
30:29This is busy, isn't it?
30:31We spent a lot yesterday. The bus was so expensive.
30:34Yeah, we will have some money back today.
30:36Hi, are you Roberto?
30:39To make the most out of their time at Brasilia Intercity Bus Terminal,
30:43Kelly and Jeremy have found a quick shoe-shining shift.
30:47Look how shiny his shoes are! Wow!
30:49Yes!
30:53Local entrepreneur Roberto has been shining shoes
30:56since he was 14 years old,
30:58charging up to R$25, the equivalent of £3.50 per customer.
31:02Look at that technique.
31:04It's all in the wrist, Jeremy.
31:06I can't see anyone with shoes on.
31:08Everyone's got flip-flops.
31:10I need to buy my lunch and I just see people with flip-flops.
31:14How does he make a living doing this?
31:17I'm in Brazil since two weeks now
31:19and I know with R$25 you can eat for the day.
31:21So I'm asking somebody to give me one day of his money.
31:25Shoe-shining. I'll do your shoes.
31:27You've got to get the bus.
31:29It's a big fat no for most people, so...
31:32This is a disaster.
31:38The Portuguese first set foot on Brazilian soil in 1500
31:43at the coastal town of Porto Seguro.
31:46Look at that. Every single Brazilian can twerk.
31:49Now known as a party capital, its beaches are lined with bars
31:53where north-east Brazil's Axé music,
31:56a fusion of Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian rhythm, never stops.
32:00It's a great vibe, like, it's really super energetic.
32:03Cola and Mary Ellen are working with show host Baninha Baía
32:07and dancer Fernanda Silva at the famous Toa Toa beach bar.
32:13Three times a year, at the start of the tourist seasons,
32:17they welcome new recruits.
32:19Hello. Hello.
32:29OK.
32:34OK. Yes.
32:38All right.
32:43OK.
33:01The professionals are chiselled AF.
33:04I don't remember the last time I actually wore a bikini
33:08or being confident in my body to actually show this much skin.
33:12So today's actually really big for me.
33:15Mary Ellen grew up in my household, and that was a household,
33:19if you wasn't shouting, you might be forgotten.
33:22So she is confident, but, you know, with everyone,
33:27everyone has their own insecurities.
33:29On the race, what I would want Mary Ellen to forget
33:32about what other people think,
33:34be in the moment and lose herself a little bit.
33:37I'm incredibly nervous.
33:39Oh, I'm just going to harness
33:41all the beautiful Brazilian energy around me.
33:44Hopefully they won't boo me off the stage.
33:48Baía! Oh, my God, hola!
33:51So good! So good!
33:53So good!
34:17Go, Mary!
34:23Go!
34:32I'm really proud of Mary.
34:34It takes a lot of courage, being confident enough
34:37to get on that stage and dance and strut her stuff.
34:40It's really wonderful to see.
34:42Being colour is so much love in our relationship.
34:45Colour!
34:47He's one of my biggest supporters,
34:49and he will always push me to be the best version of myself.
34:56Do you know what?
34:58Absolutely buzzing.
35:00I was like, OK, we've got this.
35:04I looked at every single one of those women,
35:07I saw every shape and size,
35:10and the confidence that just radiated was insane.
35:14And I was like, do you know what? I need more of that.
35:17I don't think I've ever felt that free being so vulnerable.
35:21That was very magical, and it was just what I needed, to be honest.
35:40140.
35:42Oh, in the bank.
35:44140 for checking the booty.
35:47I was so proud seeing you up there, Mary.
35:49Thank you. You were amazing.
35:51I was mental. So proud.
35:53And I feel that today you've learnt something about yourself.
35:56Massively. I hope you run with it.
36:01If you need more days like this,
36:03you can use this experience as, like, a propeller
36:06to start living in the moment.
36:08Cos I feel like we've needed this big time. Yeah.
36:12I might not come back to the UK.
36:14Catch me in Brazil shaking my booty.
36:27I've never been on, like, a 19th-century tram.
36:31Yeah, it's cool. Get thrown around a little bit.
36:34Not the back massage I wanted, but I'm getting one.
36:38Rio de Janeiro.
36:40Portuguese for January River.
36:43Named by explorers in 1502
36:46when they mistook the bay for the mouth of a large river.
36:51I can't believe the whole city is just built into the mountainside.
36:55It makes London seem quite boring and flat, doesn't it?
37:00The city is surrounded by the Tijuca National Park,
37:04one of the world's largest urban forests.
37:07Attracting over five million tourists a year,
37:10this hotspot is one of the most expensive holiday destinations in Brazil.
37:17Come to Rio!
37:20This could quite possibly be the worst hotel we've ever stayed in.
37:24This is mental. What?
37:28I'm thinking, wow.
37:31There's probably better entries into cells.
37:34This isn't the luxury that images of the Copacabana conjures up,
37:38but it's perfect for what Freddie and I need right now.
37:43One room?
37:45It's 25 quid or something.
37:47There'll be a reason it costs 25 quid, but that's OK.
37:50It makes so much strategic sense,
37:53literally 100 metres away from the bus garage.
37:57I'm all about the sacrifice.
37:59All right, this is lovely.
38:02Very beautiful. The TV is probably two times older than me.
38:05It smells of 1970.
38:09It's like a staleness.
38:15It's exciting, Fred.
38:17The world's most famous beach, Copacabana.
38:22A bit cloudy.
38:24This looks like the man.
38:26Hello. Nice to meet you.
38:29Hello. Nice to meet you.
38:32To recoup his souvenir splurge,
38:35Freddie's planned to work for beach seller Tubarão,
38:38Portuguese for shark.
38:40I'm going to tell him my name's Frog.
38:44We have to walk around with one of them on our back skis.
38:47Oh, wow.
38:48He has been selling Brazilian iced tea, called mate,
38:51on Copacabana Beach since he was a teenager.
38:55So mix, 50-50.
38:57Yeah, that's really nice.
38:59That's really nice.
39:01It's like Coke mixed with orange juice.
39:03Charging the equivalent of £1.40 per cup...
39:06Oh, wow, OK.
39:07..he sells over 100 per day.
39:09All right, then.
39:11OK.
39:12My dad don't have to carry any?
39:14I thought you was doing this on your own, actually.
39:17Mate, lemonade. Mate, lemonade.
39:19Mate, lemonade.
39:21Maracuja.
39:22How do you say it?
39:23Maracuja.
39:24Maracuja.
39:25Mate, lemonade. Maracuja.
39:27Mate, lemonade.
39:30Mate, lemonade. Maracuja.
39:32We all had to start.
39:33My first job was on a beach, running up and down
39:36and bouncing on a trampette and sticking to a Velcro wall,
39:39wearing, like, a Velcro suit.
39:41My shoulders are tearing.
39:43Mate, lemonade.
39:45Why did I sign up for this?
39:47He'll get a lot of confidence as well when he sells one or two.
39:52Mate, lemonade.
39:54Si?
39:55Lovely.
39:58Obrigado.
39:59Obrigado.
40:00Obrigado.
40:01Well done.
40:02Mate, lemonade.
40:04Help me get rid of this drink cos my shoulders are in bits!
40:08Si?
40:09OK.
40:10Obrigado.
40:13Your turn now.
40:15I've pulled my neck, my shoulders and my back.
40:18You should be doing it now.
40:20Why am I replacing what you spent?
40:28My experiences in childhood have probably really lent into
40:33how I've parented Bobby and Freddie.
40:35It's your mess, you've got to clear this one up.
40:38My mum, probably against everyone's opinions,
40:42decided to have me even though she was only 15 years old,
40:45so I'm forever grateful for that.
40:47Mate, lemonade.
40:50I didn't ever have the company of my biological dad.
40:54He died when I was nine.
40:56I always obviously regretted never meeting him.
40:59So when it came to me being a dad,
41:01I was always going to make sure that they had the experience of me
41:04that I would have liked to have had from him.
41:07Obrigado.
41:08When I struggle with Freddie not taking responsibility sometimes,
41:12I struggle with that because I had no choice at a very young age.
41:16But that's not his fault.
41:18That's not his fault.
41:42Well done, Freddie. Well done.
41:45It's hard, isn't it, sales? Yeah.
41:47I could have made so much more,
41:49but there were so many fit girls in groups and I just bottled it.
41:53Don't think it's about the money, actually, Fred.
41:55I think it's just about the fact that you went out and did it.
41:59Well done. Proud of you.
42:02Ah!
42:16We really have spent a whole day on a bus.
42:19I quite like it. You're not spending any money.
42:23As part of Sam's plan to make up lost time,
42:26they're on a mammoth 24-hour bus journey to Goiânia,
42:30where they hope to take another overnight bus
42:32900km to the checkpoint in São Paulo.
42:39We've got a lot of ground to pick up on this leg.
42:41We deserve a good day. We do.
42:43And I'm hoping that we'll manage to get some work,
42:46to boost our budget,
42:48but always in my mind I'm thinking,
42:50have I chosen the right route?
42:52Have I chosen the right bus?
42:56Have I chosen anything right?
43:01Belo Horizonte, por favor.
43:041,550km east...
43:07Can you scratch my back, just there?
43:10Oh, to the right.
43:11...Cola and Mary-Ellen are the last team to leave the state of Bahia.
43:16It's 18 hours.
43:18This country's big, man.
43:19Mary-Ellen's plan?
43:21Head inland via Belo Horizonte
43:24to propel them 930km closer to São Paulo.
43:30It's quicker than going to Rio.
43:32We're closer to the checkpoint.
43:34For one time, she has a chance to go real.
43:391,300km west, in Uberlandia.
43:45Whoa, that's crazy rain.
43:48Sticking to Jeremy's direct route.
43:51Holy moly.
43:53Go in that restaurant, babe. Let's splash out.
43:56The couple enjoy a rare treat.
44:01I mean, I have no idea about the budget
44:03because you've managed the whole thing.
44:05Are you being too strict?
44:06No.
44:07You should not be skipping meals.
44:09I don't agree with that.
44:10I think that's a judo thing.
44:12I don't want to be there the last three days without money.
44:14No, I know.
44:15It's discipline, so I can be boring,
44:17but I just, as far as I do this.
44:19You really want us to finish this, don't you?
44:21Yeah, I would feel so humiliated if I can't.
44:24What I'm struggling with is not having a regular shower,
44:27not cleaning my teeth enough.
44:30Can you do the rest?
44:31You need to try at least the best.
44:33No, I know.
44:34I literally could cry.
44:35I'll just do the mask, babe.
44:37No, I know.
44:38I'll do it because I know you want to save the money,
44:40but I'm like, oh, my God, I've got another day without having a wash.
44:44Like, it's a horrible feeling.
44:46This is really not romantic.
44:48Are you getting drenched?
44:49We went from having a romantic dinner
44:51to now being in an absolute thunderstorm.
44:53Oh, my God.
44:56Oh, Jeremy.
45:00It's been a really long day.
45:01We've got to find a hotel and time's getting on now.
45:03I think we'll just worry about the bus tickets tomorrow.
45:06Approach tomorrow with a clearer head.
45:08Plan's done.
45:13Hola.
45:14Check in.
45:16Jeremy.
45:17Ah!
45:18OK, perfect, thank you.
45:211.79 until 10am.
45:23This is definitely by the hour, isn't it?
45:26We're going for an all-nighter.
45:28You drive in, you park your car,
45:30you go in, no-one sees you.
45:36Oh!
45:38Oh.
45:42Is it to the music?
45:46I don't know how to turn this off.
45:47Oh, we might be listening to this all night.
45:50OK. OK.
45:52Oh, that was all getting a bit too sexy for me.
45:55Babe, look at the jacuzzi.
45:57Oh, no.
45:58Oh, look!
45:59Babe, there's a mirror, like, literally right opposite the...
46:07Jezza?
46:08Yeah?
46:09I don't think this is on our budget.
46:11What, baby?
46:12Five!
46:13Oh, it's too much.
46:15We won't be doing any of that.
46:17Can't afford it.
46:21Does this put you in the mood, though?
46:23Go to sleep.
46:26340km north...
46:31Uh, Caprini?
46:33Enjoy.
46:35Thank you very much. Thank you.
46:37In Goiânia, Scott and Sam are working for the second time this week.
46:43An evening job at a Wild West-inspired bar
46:46before their final journey to São Paulo.
46:50Avogadro.
46:52I'm new.
46:55We've not been able to book our transport out here tonight.
46:58Avogadro.
46:59And I really don't want to spend the night here.
47:01I think that will cost us greatly in the race.
47:04Hola.
47:05I'm hoping that we can meet some people that can help us.
47:13We are in a race to get to São Paulo,
47:17so we need to get a bus.
47:20Is there one tonight?
47:22Yeah.
47:24Last bus, 10 o'clock.
47:26Doesn't look like we're going there tonight.
47:30There is no bus that we can get tonight to São Paulo.
47:34You just want things to work out,
47:37and it's a shame when they don't,
47:39and it can make you feel a little defeated.
47:42Maybe we're just really bad at it.
47:44I don't know.
47:54This leg.
47:55You know, I said, leave this down to me.
47:58Mm-hm, he did say that.
48:00Have I let you down?
48:02What do you mean, have you let me down?
48:04Well, I said, trust me on this, and here we are in a hotel room,
48:07and nothing's gone right.
48:08Of course you haven't.
48:09But this leg has been the worst leg.
48:12If we're fourth by any more than an hour...
48:17What?
48:18..then I feel like I've left you down.
48:20You never let me down.
48:22You're silly.
48:24You're the best.
48:28Sam hates seeing me upset or down.
48:32Sometimes things don't work out.
48:34We're in this together.
48:36It's an experience of a lifetime,
48:39and nothing can change that.
48:43I wasn't expecting it to be like this.
48:46I wasn't expecting it to be this hard.
48:48How is it hard to get around the world?
48:51It is.
49:00585km north-east of the checkpoint...
49:06Um, no.
49:08No, it's not there. No, it's over here.
49:10Of course it is.
49:11..with their bus booked to Sao Paulo,
49:14Get money, get money.
49:16You should have been a dishwasher.
49:18You're so good at it, like, honestly.
49:20And it beats Coco Cabana Beach, right?
49:23Um...
49:25I think we've done really well to scrape back time
49:29that we lost in Lençois.
49:31We need to get a move on to Sao Paulo.
49:33Shall we? Let's go. Let's go.
49:35You did well.
49:36You did well.
49:37You did well.
49:38You did well.
49:39You did well.
49:40You did well.
49:41Let's go. Let's go.
49:42You did well.
49:43Maybe this was the more logical route,
49:46cos we're always quite far in.
49:48Sorry.
49:49There it is. There it is.
49:51I think we made the right decision.
49:53We're not far away from the checkpoint now.
49:55Hola.
49:57Bon dia.
49:58Fun station?
50:00I don't have a clue where we're going to come in that book.
50:03I don't think we're going to come last.
50:12Checkpoint ready. Ready to catch a bus.
50:15I don't want to be waiting even an hour.
50:18In Rio de Janeiro, 430km east of the checkpoint...
50:23Race mode.
50:24Right, race mode. Go for it.
50:26Quanto costa Sao Paulo?
50:28Go on then.
50:29OK. Dois.
50:30Ready.
50:31Well done.
50:32There it is.
50:35Approaching from the north-west, 588km away...
50:40I want to run fast tonight.
50:42This is a kind of sign to Jeremy I don't really know, to be honest.
50:46Oh, dear.
50:48So far on this leg, I think he's done an incredible job.
50:51I wouldn't say we've had, like, the most fun.
50:53If we close the gap, I will be happy, very happy.
50:57In Goiânia, 900km north of the checkpoint...
51:01Sao Paulo.
51:02I just want to do my bit and have some responsibility myself
51:05rather than Sam thinking, oh, God, it's all on me.
51:084, 5, 7 each.
51:10The quickest one gets us in...
51:12A few hours ago.
51:13..four and a half hours earlier.
51:15There's 100 Reais more.
51:17Could make the difference between fourth and third.
51:19Let's do that.
51:20Starting to smell a bit.
51:22That's a new low.
51:2472 hours of protection.
51:26It's different rules here.
51:28Have a smell.
51:30Smells like fresh linen.
51:32Absolute madness.
51:34We are on our way to checkpoint three.
51:37Here we go.
51:39I've got the checkpoint feeling of dread.
51:41The same feeling I used to get when I was a kid,
51:43when I was a kid, when I was a kid,
51:45when I was a kid, when I was a kid.
51:47Checkpoint feeling of dread.
51:49The same feeling I used to get when it was school sports day.
51:52But I can't get my mum to do a note this time.
51:56I remember thinking the quickest route for this leg
51:58would have been Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Sao Paulo.
52:02I wouldn't be surprised if the other teams
52:05are running to the checkpoint at the same time as us,
52:08if not in before us.
52:18SIREN BLARES
52:23Nine, ten lanes of traffic.
52:25This is another level.
52:27South America's most populous city, Sao Paulo.
52:32A skyline pierced with high-rises,
52:35it's one of the most congested metropolises in the world.
52:40And I know you want to get there quick.
52:42We've just got to claw back some time, I think.
52:44Home to Brazil's largest metro system,
52:47at over 74km long,
52:49it transports over three million passengers a day.
52:52Race HQ.
52:54Travel by metro to find...
52:56Mask.
52:57Mask.
52:58What's mask?
53:01Suspended over a freestanding space,
53:04Sao Paulo's museum of art.
53:07Platform five.
53:08Five.
53:11Five.
53:12But that's not any of those.
53:18Have we finally made it?
53:20Yeah.
53:22M-A-S-P. Mask.
53:24It's been to mask. It's going that way.
53:26Ah!
53:29Ah! Ah!
53:30We just missed one.
53:32Excuse me.
53:34Sorry.
53:35Oh, my God.
53:38I'm actually paranoid that someone is following me.
53:41Someone is following me.
53:48Right, there it is. Mask, look, mask.
53:51Mask?
53:52Mask, right here.
53:53This?
53:54Let's see.
53:56Stop.
53:59Walk toward the Brazilian flag
54:01and take a left down Avenue Brigadeiro
54:04to find the checkpoint Hotel Unique.
54:07We've got to somehow cross this massive road.
54:10I think it's here, right there.
54:11It's here.
54:12Go.
54:13Brazilian flag.
54:14Up, up.
54:15Can you see it?
54:16Yeah.
54:17Brigadeiro, that way.
54:18Straight up.
54:19Come on.
54:20It's got to be here somewhere.
54:21Do you see it?
54:22No.
54:23Cross, cross, cross, cross, cross.
54:24Just keep an eye on both sides.
54:25We went the right way on the road, yeah?
54:27Look for a big building.
54:28Do you reckon it's that building there?
54:30That looks like a hotel.
54:31Quick, while it's red.
54:33Whoa.
54:34Terry?
54:35I'm coming.
54:40Welcome to Hotel Unique.
54:41Please sign in.
54:42My God, my heart.
54:45Fourth.
54:48That's not bad.
54:49It's not like we're 12 hours or 24 hours behind.
54:52We're two hours behind third.
54:55Third.
54:56Yes.
54:57Yes.
54:58We clawed some time back.
54:59I'm on.
55:00Amazing.
55:01We clawed back 13 hours.
55:03And we're not in last.
55:05No, that is really good.
55:06That's really, really good.
55:08I am ecstatically happy.
55:11I've been bronzed before, but it's never felt this good.
55:16I'm so proud of us.
55:17You also need to stop saying, oh, you know, I've let you down.
55:20Because you haven't.
55:22No, I haven't, because I've clawed back 13 hours.
55:24I'm just saying you haven't.
55:25You didn't anyway, before you knew you were third.
55:31Yes.
55:32This has got to be it.
55:33This has got to be it.
55:38I'm so nervous about this.
55:42Yes.
55:43OK, not bad.
55:44Yes.
55:45Not bad at all.
55:46Geoff and Freddie, we're coming for you.
55:49Because last week, it was 22 hours difference.
55:51Yeah.
55:52Now it's nine.
55:5313 hours.
55:54In one week, we did 13 hours.
55:55Yeah.
55:56Well done.
55:58Oh, stop it.
56:00Top floor of the hotel.
56:01What a view.
56:03Feeling good.
56:04It's another victory.
56:05And honestly, a massive relief after a very long week
56:08on the road.
56:09They don't matter who put in the most effort.
56:12But we got it together.
56:15We're quite happy with the time we've made up.
56:17Yeah.
56:18We'll catch them up for sure.
56:19I will try my best.
56:21You actually clenched your fist then.
56:23I just want to see if they can keep going.
56:25OK, let's go.
56:26Smell that lovely, nice hotel smell.
56:30After the longest leg so far,
56:32just over 16 hours separates the teams
56:35at the halfway point in the race to Frutija.
56:39How do you feel being first place?
56:40Proud of us.
56:41I think we've still got a little bit more in our locker as well.
56:44100%.
56:45We're just getting going.
56:56Ready to step foot into another country?
56:59Austria, Uruguay.
57:01Take me to Paraguay.
57:02We're definitely in Argentina.
57:04Tango, tango, tango.
57:07This is chaos.
57:09We're in the world!
57:11The most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
57:13Oh, wow.
57:14This has been the reconnection that we needed.
57:16You're right.
57:17Where's my passport and the bus?
57:18Is it the fact that he's a celebrity
57:20and he has people holding on to these things for him?
57:22This leg taught us a lesson and gave us a slap around the face.
57:25Let's just sit and smile and act like this isn't shit.
57:52Tango, tango, tango.
