00:00What is I'm sorry, but this doesn't make sense at all sir according to my research
00:06This is the situation
00:08What is the Chinese Navy has?
00:11one ex-soviet carrier a
00:14copy of an ex-soviet carrier
00:16they are building a
00:20Indigenous medium carrier and
00:23That's basically it they also put on hold the building of the fourth carrier
00:28This is at best an incomplete view sir. What is this is the Chinese Navy? It's not the US Navy
00:35They don't have the same power
00:38Projection requirements. In fact, they don't their purpose is different
00:43Okay, so what's the purpose for you? Let me explain
00:47Sir
00:53Hey, we have already covered the recent history of the efforts of the Chinese Navy to acquire aircraft carrier
01:01capabilities in the context of the
01:04Description of the long shadow that has been cast by the Soviet naval aviation on made in modern navies
01:10The video covers a lot of details and if you're interested you can find it here for our purpose today is enough to recall
01:17That China operates two aircraft carriers
01:20The first is actually the ex-soviet ship Varyag purchased in shady
01:26circumstances in
01:281998 there was an adventurous towing to China a long refit and finally in
01:352016 the ship has been declared
01:38operational under the name of
01:40Liaoning, but that wasn't to remain an isolated case in
01:442007 China purchased from Russia four sets of aircraft carrier landing arrest
01:51Equipment, so this was a clear indication that something else was going to happen
01:56And in fact in 2013 the building of an entirely domestic carrier was started
02:02The ship was actually a bigger and slightly more capable copy of the Liaoning with a displacement of about
02:1070,000 tons. The lessons learned with the Liaoning had been put in practice with the Shandong
02:15This is the name of the second carrier
02:17increasing the room available for the aircraft and also improving the deck operations. At the end of
02:242019 the carrier was declared combat ready and after the Shandong
02:30Nobody expected the Chinese to stop there and in fact the type 003 came along
02:40In
02:422016 and 2017
02:44Reports about this new aircraft carrier started to appear in the specialized press. Soon
02:50It was clear that in Shanghai something big was being built by the Jiangnam
02:56Shipyard group. In mind, this is not the same Dalian shipyard that built the previous two
03:01So the Chinese have two shipyards with the capability of building aircraft carriers
03:07We don't know much about the ship
03:08But all the information that we have which comes from the fragments of information that are actually published on the Chinese internet
03:16Rather than from the satellite pictures that we have of the construction have been really dissected by the analysts
03:24So we can have some rough estimates about the ship. The most recent estimates
03:29placed the type 003 at
03:32318 meters length with the beam of
03:3678 meters on the flight deck. The displacement has been estimated to be a little shy of
03:43100,000 tons. Larger than the initial estimates. Overall, this means that the carrier is probably just
03:50slightly smaller than the Gerald Ford class. Some analysts actually believed that the ship was going to be some sort of an
03:58Intermediate model akin to what the Kitiok had been
04:02Many years ago in the United States fleet, but it doesn't seem to be the case
04:06So the Chinese apparently skip a generation and the fact that there is a large basing being built in the south
04:12That is pretty much just big enough to host
04:17Type 003 is probably telling us that this is going to be a sort of a standard measure for Chinese aircraft
04:24For the years to come. The type 003 is still being built
04:27But we can identify some differences with the Ford class. For example, the type 003 doesn't feature a
04:34nuclear propulsion
04:36But its propulsion system is not entirely conventional either. In fact
04:41It seems that the ship is going to have an integrated electric propulsion. This means that turbines, boilers or any other power
04:49Generating element on board of the ship is not connected directly with the propellers
04:55But is only used to produce
04:58Electrical power which is transferred to electrical engines driving the propellers
05:03This type of propulsion is becoming increasingly popular because it has several advantages in terms of design
05:10But also efficiency compared with older configurations
05:14But this choice also makes sense because the type 003 will be equipped with three
05:20Electromagnetic catapults each one of those 105 meters long. On a carrier flight deck
05:27Basically, we just see a rail with a shuttle moving on it
05:32But actually a catapult is a relatively large system that may influence the whole ship design
05:39For example, steam catapults require the boiler to generate the steams and all the piping required to bring the steam from the boiler
05:48To the catapult that has a complex mechanical system that pushes the aircraft when is needed. On the contrary
05:55Electromagnetic catapults require a large amount of electric power being delivered
06:01Very quickly to accelerate the aircraft and this requires to bring the electrical power to accumulation devices
06:08And all the cabling that is actually required, all the control systems. In the United States the development of the emails has been long and bumpy
06:16But the advantages of the solution compared with the steam catapults is quite clear
06:23The Chinese don't have any direct experience
06:25But even in this case they have decided to skip a generation and point directly to the most modern
06:32Solution. Another element that heavily influences the design of the ship is the hangar
06:37It seems that the hangar of the type 003 is going to be slightly smaller than the Ford class hangar
06:44And it will have only two large
06:47Aircraft elevators rather than the three that are present on the Ford class
06:53The ship is expected to be launched in 2022 to be delivered in 2024 and to reach the initial operational
07:00capability in
07:022025 or 2026
07:04However, the Chinese don't have any experience in running a cut-to-bar carrier
07:08So delays are definitely possible and this consideration rather than budgetary
07:14Concerns is probably the reason why the Chinese have decided to pull the project of the type
07:21004 a nuclear aircraft carrier on hold for the moment
07:26In fact, if we have to listen to official plan
07:30Statements the service is actually still
07:33Evaluating aircraft carriers to see if they are useful or not
07:37so in theory current carriers including 003 are all
07:44experimental carriers useful to train people establish a
07:48Doctrine and establish a naval tradition about aircraft carriers
07:53So while it's obviously true that the Chinese Navy has to go through a learning curve
07:57This entire approach doesn't seem to be realistic and this is what Otis was saying at the beginning and actually he has an idea
08:11Carriers allow sea control over critical trade roads and they project air power over
08:17coastal areas up to adapt into the continental mass that
08:22Includes the bulk of the population
08:25They can deny the use of the sea to an opponent and they can protect
08:30Friendly or neutral sea traffic that is essential for the survival
08:35And in fact, the United States uses the carriers to project power globally
08:40This is basically what a maritime empire does and United States are a maritime empire
08:47Even though I'm well aware that this way of putting things is definitely not politically correct
08:54But what is the imperial drive for China?
08:57Well for China is the necessity of having access to energy and food
09:03The most important maritime routes for China are those that lead to the Middle East for oil
09:18So from the point of view of China, it may seem reasonable to have a force of aircraft carrier
09:25capable of protecting those trade routes from the only opponent that in theory has the
09:32Possibility and the capability to shut them off the United States. However, look at the map. Well
09:40It looks like China has a problem right here the Malacca Strait. It is a choke point
09:47Surrounded by countries whose allegiance may not necessarily be to the Chinese
09:53those countries may host American or Western coalition forces that build a
09:59barrier that make the Middle East and Africa completely
10:03inaccessible even without aircraft carriers
10:06if the United States could assure the loyalty of countries like Singapore, but also Malaysia or
10:13Indonesia
10:14Thailand, Vietnam
10:15There is no way that the Chinese could open up that route. In that case
10:21the only possibility for the Chinese would be a physical invasion of those land areas or a
10:28Neutralization of all the infrastructures that would be used by a Western coalition in those areas
10:34And now what would you need to do such an operation? Well, obviously an invasion force and amphibious force
10:45But
10:51Mostly you need their superiority and the only way to bring aircraft from China in the area against and hostile opposition
10:59Yeah, it's a force of aircraft carriers. Okay, but now don't forget
11:05That the American carriers will still be there and with the carrier still available
11:10What should you do before acquiring the control of the Straits?
11:20In the West for a long time has been sort of assumed that the
11:24long-term plan of the Chinese was to deploy
11:27six aircraft carrier two in the north two in the south and two in the east facing
11:33Taiwan where the carrier were going to become the centerpiece of a
11:39Defensive system that goes beyond the first island chain
11:43However, some analysts have found all the Chinese
11:47Publications that actually hint to something different in some Chinese publication
11:51It is stated that they are well aware that no real confrontation with United States may happen
11:58till the Chinese Navy is actually capable of
12:02Fighting and winning against the US Navy in blue waters and to do so
12:08They assess that at least a force of 10 aircraft carriers was needed and mind the Chinese always make
12:15long-term plans
12:17So what if any this is a what if this is a speculation? What if the type 004?
12:24carriers and eventually the future 005 are
12:29Going to be designed to attack and defeat the US Navy in blue water
12:35What if they are not going to be defensive tools, but they're going to be offensive weapons
12:41What kind of ship do you need and in particular what kind of carrier group and what kind of carrier wing?
12:49Do you need to execute this mission? Well, this will be the subject of the next video
12:55So if you like this video there are several other videos on the channel about China the Chinese Armed Forces and
13:02The Chinese Navy too. They are going to appear beside me a big
13:06thank you to all those who support the channel on Patreon or by being a member and
13:11Patreons and members will have access to the documentation that I actually used to prepare this video
