00:00Welcome Back Everyone.
00:07It is Amelia.
00:08I hope you are fine.
00:09The Battle of the Burning Mill occurs off-screen in House of the Dragons Season 2, Episode
00:143, leaving its contents and real background a mystery in the HBO adaptation.
00:19Regarded as the first real battle in the Dance of the Dragons, the Battle of the Burning
00:24Mill is a bloody fight in the Riverlands that culminates in heavy losses for supporters
00:28of both Rhaenyra and Aegon.
00:30Given how highly anticipated the dancers' battles are in House of the Dragon after the
00:35incredible action shown in Game of Thrones, it's surprising that the show skipped over
00:40the combat.
00:41After showing young soldiers from Houses Bracken and Blackwood arguing over their support of
00:46either Aegon or Rhaenyra, House of the Dragons Season 2, Episode 3 simply cuts to the aftermath
00:52of a devastating battle.
00:54The camera pans over hundreds of dead bodies as the Burning Mill lies quite bloody and
00:59smoking from the Rhaenys' combat.
01:01When word reaches teams Green and Black, Aegon's council argues over whether it counts as a
01:06victory or can even be considered separate from the two Houses' centuries-long feud.
01:11However, missing context from the Fire and Blood book helps clear up the cause, winner,
01:16and impact of the Battle of the Burning Mill.
01:19House of the Dragons Season 2, Episode 3 implies that the Battle of the Burning Mill began
01:23shortly after young members of the Brackens and Blackwoods began fighting about Rhaenyra
01:28and Aegon, escalating into a full-scale battle.
01:31The real cause of the battle is a bit different in George R. R. Martin's Fire and Blood book,
01:36clarifying that the sword fight between the young soldiers is more of a prelude to the
01:41full-scale combat than the incident that actually begins the battle.
01:45The real battle is commanded by Ser Amos Bracken and Lord Samuel Blackwood on their respective
01:50sides when loyalties to each side were being decided after House of the Dragons Season
01:551's ending.
01:56House Blackwood declared for Queen Rhaenyra while House Bracken allied with King Aegon
02:01too.
02:02As hinted at in the show, the Brackens and Blackwoods have feuded for over 10,000 years
02:06with the real reason for their opposition having been lost to time despite their animosity
02:11being increasingly strengthened.
02:13Their long-standing feud was previously hinted at in House of the Dragons Season 1, Episode
02:184, when young Willem Blackwood killed Gerald Bracken while both were vying for young Rhaenyra
02:23Targaryen's hand in marriage.
