00:00NorthWest Richlist, developers selected for WithinShore scheme, fishing nets, PPE and
00:05adventure travel, all coming up in today's Daily Business Briefing.
00:14I'm Mary Thomas.
00:15And I'm Robin Hewson.
00:16And in this morning's news, Robin, I saw a few stories from my old patch in the South
00:21West.
00:22So, Cornwall, a company there that makes 3D printed filaments from end-of-life fishing
00:27nets.
00:28That surpassed its Crowdcube target.
00:29Originally, they were going for 150,000 pounds, but they revised that down to 100,000 pounds
00:35after the commercial success of one of their pilots.
00:38So those funds are going to be used to market fishy filaments range of virtually carbon-free
00:44marine nylon for use in advanced engineering and manufacturing.
00:48That's going to enable them to fast-track all their R&D, as well as meet their environmental
00:52and social targets.
00:55Also from Cornwall is a business called Revolution Zero.
00:58Now, that makes reusable medical textiles.
01:02So they received 250,000 pounds from asset finance provider Ignition, and that's going
01:09to help that business realize its ambition to make sustainable, reusable PPE.
01:14So they're going to try and make it lower cost, as well as more environmentally friendly.
01:19Oh, sounds great.
01:20What did you see this morning?
01:21Well, news in the property world in the Northwest today was about Muse being named as the delivery
01:26partner for Withenshaw.
01:27So Muse are all about long-term regeneration, and this is a scheme that's going to go on
01:31for the next 10 years.
01:33So there's quite a few exciting things being delivered from a new public square to 1,750
01:39new homes and community assets, things like that.
01:42So lots of good stuff there.
01:43And they're calling it a positive energy district.
01:46Yeah.
01:47So they want to be the UK's first positive energy district, which is all about connecting
01:51up the buildings and creating a whole area that's net zero, and it also improves the
01:55local biodiversity as well.
01:58Speaking of biodiversity, but on a bigger scale, so think Habitat.
02:01A company called Abercrombie & Kent, they're a travel company with its UK headquarters
02:07in Cheltenham.
02:08They've just secured a 500 million pound investment to support their expansion.
02:14So their products include expedition cruises, which they say take place across all seven
02:19continents, and they're launching two new cruises this year.
02:23They're also going to launch a new river boat in Peru later in the year as well, which joins
02:29their fleet of river boats in Egypt.
02:32And they've got three expedition yachts in the Galapagos Islands.
02:36Oh, wow.
02:37How do you fancy that one?
02:38Yeah, absolutely.
02:39Sign me up.
02:40I think we'd probably need deeper pockets to afford a nice yacht in the Galapagos.
02:43Yeah, absolutely.
02:44And speaking of people with deep pockets, we've just released the tech portion of our
02:49rich list this morning.
02:50So the rich list is sort of only about business people.
02:54It's not just kind of the richest celebrities in the region, but people who are wealthy
02:57from their businesses.
02:59And this year, we thought we'd do a bit of a deep dive into some of the trends that have
03:02come out of it.
03:03So one area in particular is about tech entrepreneurs, and we've revealed the top 10 in the Northwest
03:08today.
03:09So who would be your guests for the top one in the Northwest?
03:12Well, based on this year and the merger between or the acquisition of WaveNet by Daisy, I
03:17was thinking maybe Matthew Riley, because he now oversees a much bigger business.
03:21It's a good guess.
03:22He's coming at number two.
03:24So he is just pips the post by Simon Nixon of Money Supermarket, who's got 1.88 billion
03:32to his name.
03:33And Matthew Riley of Daisy has 825 million.
03:38So Simon Nixon, as well as being known for Money Supermarket, is also supporting the
03:42next generation of entrepreneurs and funding the next generation of tech through Seek Ventures.
03:47And as you mentioned, the acquisition sort of boosted Daisy.
03:51And then coming in at number three is Matt and Jodie Moulding from The Hook Group.
03:55So they're obviously well known for selling beauty and lifestyle projects.
03:59But something else that's really boosted their profits is the e-commerce platform, Ingenuity.
04:05So they've sold that to other brands like L'Oreal and Pepsi, and that's really boosted
04:09them as well.
04:10All right.
04:11So you can read the top 10 tech today.
04:14But for the full list of the 50 richest people in the Northwest, you need to sign up for
04:20our September edition of Northwest Business Insider, and that'll be on desks before the
04:25bank holiday.
04:26We'll be back tomorrow with your next daily business briefing.
