00:10The Sith Lord of the Acolyte decimated the Jedi and he used a devastating new type of

00:14lightsaber to do it.

00:16The Acolyte Episode 5 finally revealed the long-awaited identity of the show's Sith Lord

00:21and it was none other than Kimmel, Mace's trusty helper.

00:25It wasn't the only surprise the episode had in store, though, as Kimmel also had a very

00:30unusual and surprising lightsaber at his disposal.

00:33He used it to rip through a big chunk of the Acolyte's cast of characters, which gave his

00:38lightsaber a devastating first appearance.

00:41There are several types of lightsabers in Star Wars canon, from the standard single

00:45blade used by most Jedi and Sith to more unique types like double-bladed and the lightspear.

00:51Some types of lightsabers are significantly more common than others and the Sith Lord

00:55of the Acolyte has a particularly unique one.

00:58This type of lightsaber has never been seen in any Star Wars movie or show and its first

01:03live-action appearance caught all the Jedi by surprise.

01:07Though Kimmel's blade was surprisingly game-changing and rule-breaking, there is a bit of information

01:12about it that can be passed from the Acolyte.

01:14In a particularly high-adrenaline moment, Kimmel separated his lightsaber at the hilt

01:19and turned it into two smaller blades.

01:21In the heat of battle, this helped him surprise Jackie Lone and kill her before she could

01:26react to the new configuration.

01:28This type of dual-wield lightsaber has been used in Star Wars canon before by Karl Kestis

01:34in the Star Wars JD games.

01:36There are a few key differences between Karl's and Kimmel's lightsabers, though, and it seems

01:40Kimmel's was specifically designed to deceive his opponents, among other things.

01:45A very important part of Kimmel's lightsaber is the fact that he needed to twist the second

01:50blade off the handle of his main weapon to separate them.

01:53This seems like a small feature meant to keep the lightsabers together, but it also connects

01:57Kimmel to a different character from the Acolyte, Vanessa Roach.

02:01Vanessa famously wielded the Light Whip, a type of lightsaber that could lose its rigid

02:06blade-like shape and act more like a rope or whip.

02:09She could cycle between both forms, and the way she did so was by twisting part of the

02:14handle.

02:15The Acolyte will almost certainly bring another new lightsaber into live-action with the Light

02:19Whip, but its connection to Kimmel's dual-wield blades could run even deeper.

02:23A major goal of the Acolyte has been to examine and critique the JD, especially as they relate

02:29to the Sith.

02:30The fact that Kimmel uses a trick lightsaber seems like a dirty way to fight, but Vanestra's

02:35lightsaber may be similarly deceptive.

02:37It seems the Acolyte could be setting itself up to assert that the JD aren't as different

02:42from the Sith as they seem.
