00:00:00Celtics is brought to you by ice pits and the game time at
00:00:06Hey everybody, welcome to a new edition of Celtics beat. We appreciate you hanging out here with us
00:00:11I always say it at the end by then you've probably tuned out
00:00:13So why not put it at the beginning rate review most importantly subscribe to the show wherever you get your podcast
00:00:18We greatly appreciate it. Another person who has a podcast is kind enough to join us
00:00:24Of course Brian Barrett every once in a while
00:00:26We go on the off the pike podcast over there with him on the ringer. He comes on with us
00:00:32There's no relationship partnership agreement there behind the scenes
00:00:35He's just cordial and nice and inviting and we are the same and we love having you here Barrett. How are you, bud?
00:00:42I'm doing well, man. I'm doing well
00:00:43I'm a little more tired than Jason Tatum today because I got a run on the treadmill
00:00:47So I'm a little bit more fatigued than Tatum. I didn't think that we would have a situation
00:00:51Where both Jacoby Brissett and Drake May who only played one series in the Patriots preseason game would play more than Jason Tatum
00:00:59But here we are
00:01:00Don't get me started on that freaking Patriots game and the utter complete waste of time of watching
00:01:06Whatever it was an hour and a half of Bailey's happy who shouldn't even be on this roster
00:01:11At least they haven't and sorry if anyone's late to the party on this at least they finally rectified the Juju Smith Schuster
00:01:18Situation and released him earlier today
00:01:19I don't even know how he broke minicamp with this team, but whatever. This is not Patriots beat
00:01:24This is Celtics beat and as of right now, I guess this is kind of USA beat
00:01:28This is the team that is center stage for everybody gold medal game barely barely
00:01:34It was almost the bronze medal game gold medal game
00:01:38after edging coming back
00:01:40Defeating Nicola Jokic and the Serbia squad to set up a date with Victor Wembenyama the future of the NBA in many ways the present
00:01:47As well in France on the other side and you bring up the Jason Tatum thing
00:01:51I'll be it in jest one thing that is it does not seem to be in jest from a lot of people that I
00:01:57Wouldn't really say Barrett and Evan the you know people I've talked to necessarily but definitely people that I've seen on social media
00:02:03Actively rooting on the French in the gold medal game out of pure
00:02:08Allegiance maybe to Jason Tatum or just being pissed off with Team USA and Steve Kerr or whatever it is
00:02:14Maybe they just want to see something different
00:02:16I can't really imagine actively rooting against your country, but that is what people are doing some people and I personally
00:02:23Just don't I I can't be I can't care. I I just I really don't care
00:02:28I realize that sounds very un-american. I don't mean the Tatum thing. I mean if the US wins great
00:02:33I mean that all they're doing at that point in time is
00:02:36Kind of like the Celtics last year right doing their job doing what they were supposed to do
00:02:41That's what Team USA is supposed to do
00:02:43They are supposed to win the gold
00:02:45Shouldn't have even been close against Serbia should have been another blowout on the way to 5-0 and now France
00:02:51You know, it's a whole lot
00:02:53We pick Wemby and company to cover the spread and yada yada yada, but as far as Tatum goes
00:02:59Man, I mean, this is a weird situation five games two DNP CDs did not play coaches decision
00:03:07Limited minutes and some others he did start at one point in time
00:03:12We see this game against Serbia when Team USA is down by 17 points
00:03:17You absolutely could have made a viable case for one of the top players in the world
00:03:21And I realize that's true of all of these guys
00:03:23But I mean a top five player in the world coming off a championship and a brand new 300 plus million dollar
00:03:30Contract to have maybe given you a little bit of a boost a little bit of a lift off the bench
00:03:34Maybe he could have changed things up at Steve Kerr and we'll give you the quotes in a bit has come out and said
00:03:39It's a math problem. It's nothing against Tatum personally some people
00:03:43You know conspiracy theorists like to disagree, but it's nothing about Tatum personally
00:03:47It's a math problem with Kevin Durant being Kevin Durant. There's just no room for Jason Tatum
00:03:54What do you make of this whole thing? Because I think this is an embarrassment in terms of coaching on the part of Kerr
00:04:01Yeah, it's an interesting situation
00:04:03So I'm trying to figure out the reason that Kerr isn't playing him
00:04:08The first thing that I've seen thrown out there. The theory is like, oh Tatum likes to hold on to the ball
00:04:14I don't think that's the case because they're playing Anthony Edwards, right? Anthony Edwards is a ball-dominant guy too. So I don't think that's it
00:04:20I think it's that Tatum has struggled to sort of find a shot right going back to the playoffs and I do think it's interesting
00:04:26My boss Bill Simmons had the theory that he's not like jumping forward on his jump shot
00:04:31And I I'm thinking about it
00:04:33I'm like, well, what about when he turned his ankle against Spam in the playoffs, right?
00:04:37And he shot the three poorly in the playoffs
00:04:39That's four games into the postseason because if you look at the last 48 regular season games
00:04:44Tatum hit the 14th most threes in the NBA and he shot 39.4%
00:04:48So he was actually shooting at a high level for the majority of last season
00:04:52He had the poor start to the season shooting the three and then he got on fire
00:04:55I think it's more about shooting than anything else because we know how the Warriors dynasty was sort of created
00:05:01But the thing that I just can't get over here is I felt like the whole idea of having Team USA compared to these other teams is the depth of the team, right?
00:05:11So and I'm not defending Steve Kerr's decision here not to play Jason Tatum
00:05:15But for example, let's say in the game on what was it now Thursday?
00:05:22Anthony Edwards isn't playing well, Anthony Edwards is actually playing poorly
00:05:25He had one foul that was awful
00:05:27He had a really bad turnover in that game
00:05:29I believe he finished with what two points, two fouls and two turnovers
00:05:32Like he was legitimately bad in the game
00:05:34Well, then why in the second half can't you go to Jason Tatum, especially considering the fact that how was Serbia killing you?
00:05:42They were hitting a million threes, right?
00:05:44So what's the way to sort of take the three ball away?
00:05:47Oh, a switching defense, which the Celtics are one of the switchiest teams in the NBA
00:05:52Jason Tatum, him and Bam Adebayo are the most versatile defenders on the team
00:05:57I would put Tatum and Bam ahead of Anthony Davis when it comes to that perspective
00:06:01I think Bam can hold up a little better against guards
00:06:04So why wouldn't you turn to Tatum then?
00:06:06So that would be the first point is it just doesn't make sense like, oh, there's not room for Tatum
00:06:10He is arguably the most versatile player on the entire team
00:06:14And secondarily, and maybe this is going to sound a little homerish, but they came into the tournament
00:06:21Steve Kerr came into training camp, I should say
00:06:23And remember Tatum was late getting there because Tatum was, you know, celebrating his championship and signing, you know, the richest contract in the history of the NBA
00:06:31If you look at the stars of the team, right, LeBron, Curry and Durant
00:06:37And I would say they have, I know he beats out one game
00:06:40I know he beats out one game, but they plan to start and beat all the time because they recruited him, right?
00:06:45Like he, there was a possibility that he went to the French team
00:06:48Okay, so Steve Kerr's plan and they said it
00:06:52Grant Hill said, hey, if LeBron and Curry and Curry was awesome, obviously he saved them
00:06:57If those guys want to be on the team, they're on the team
00:06:59And he said Embiid, LeBron and Curry are starting every game
00:07:03Steve Kerr said that at the beginning of this whole thing
00:07:05Now one game he, of course, didn't play Embiid
00:07:08Okay, so if you look at that and we know Durant who broke the record, he's going to get his playing time
00:07:13So if that's the case, if those are going to be the featured players, because that had been determined by the head coach of the team
00:07:19He determined that before the tournament, before training camp started
00:07:22Jason Tatum is the next guy up in terms of his stature on the team
00:07:26He's the only guy on the team right now that has made three consecutive first team All-NBAs
00:07:30He's the only guy on the team that is coming off a championship
00:07:33He's the only guy on the team that just led the NBA Finals in points, rebounds and assists
00:07:38I think and maybe this conversation was had
00:07:41He should have been told, hey, these are going to be the featured players
00:07:46Because the reality is Tatum is an on the ball player
00:07:49And I'm not saying he can't play off the ball, he can
00:07:51But we just saw him play point guard throughout the NBA playoffs
00:07:55And in particular in the NBA Finals
00:07:58He was the point guard for the Celtics on offense
00:08:00And he was the center on defense
00:08:02All these other guys like Booker can find a role because he's a shooter, right?
00:08:05He's an outstanding shooter
00:08:06Drew and Derek White are basically playing the same roles they have
00:08:10Bam is not going to be a featured offensive player
00:08:12Anthony Davis is not going to be a featured offensive player
00:08:15I think there should have been a conversation with Jason Tatum
00:08:18Because if I was Tatum, I'd be thinking, wait, hold on
00:08:21I averaged the second most points on the team that just won the gold medal
00:08:24Not even four years ago, three years ago, because of COVID
00:08:27I had, what, 19 points coming off the bench in the gold medal game
00:08:31I scored the second most points
00:08:32I think there should have been more of a conversation with Tatum before he went there
00:08:35Because from a Celtics perspective, the guy just played 97 games
00:08:39It was pointless for him to go to this thing and for this to be the storyline
00:08:43Mm-hmm
00:08:44And before you go, I'll just give you the Steve Kerr quote
00:08:47And this is courtesy of Tim Reynolds
00:08:49Sorry for being so long there, but I had to get a lot off my chest
00:08:51All good information, all good, you know, thoughts, obviously
00:08:54Kerr said, it's not what I'm seeing from Jason
00:08:57It's what I'm seeing from the other guys
00:09:00Like I've said so many times during this tournament, the last six weeks
00:09:03It's just hard to play 11 people, even in an NBA game
00:09:07It's not about anything Jason is doing or not doing
00:09:10It's just about combinations and the way the group has played together
00:09:13The way Kevin has filled in since he came back from his injury
00:09:16It's just a math problem more than anything else, as I alluded to before, obviously
00:09:20So that is where it is
00:09:21Ev, I think we should go with this, really
00:09:24Because this is the biggest thing
00:09:25It's not the, you know, is Tatum butthurt about this
00:09:29And does he have a right to be, and he does, obviously
00:09:32You know, he should have some sort of role
00:09:34I mean, throw him out there for five, eight minutes, whatever
00:09:37Like within a 40-minute game and the 200 minutes or whatever it is
00:09:40You know, that you've got, whatever the math, I don't know
00:09:43You've got time to play Jason Tatum in each of these games
00:09:47All of these guys, this isn't about Tatum, Halliburton, Embiid
00:09:50Anyone else who's been a DNPCD
00:09:52You've got room for all of these guys, especially during these blowouts
00:09:56You want to tighten your rotation during a close game against Serbia, so be it
00:10:00But every other step along the way, you have had the room, obviously
00:10:04To make, you know, an opportunity for Tatum or whoever else
00:10:07But the last thing that Barrett said, Ev, is, I think, the biggest
00:10:11Which is the Celtics, everyone, White, Holiday
00:10:15Everyone on that roster already has a shortened offseason
00:10:19Because of playing upwards of 100 games and the run to the championship
00:10:23They start early because they go to Dubai for this game
00:10:27Or games, and then, you know, come back around, obviously
00:10:31And the lead-in to the regular season, then it all starts again
00:10:34You have a very abbreviated time to sort of sit back and catch your breath
00:10:39And if you are Holiday and you are White and you have a real opportunity there
00:10:43And you're playing considerable minutes, fine, you're not part of this conversation
00:10:47But if you're Tatum, really just kind of getting your work in during practices
00:10:51And, you know, hanging out with these guys and, yeah, it's an opportunity
00:10:55And I'm sure it's an unbelievable one and you got your family there and Deuce and everything
00:10:59But you think that a part of him, at least, wouldn't rather just be kicking it at home
00:11:03And taking a break after the grueling year that he had
00:11:06And what he still has in front of him versus this?
00:11:10Yeah, I think there's maybe some pressure of trying to be
00:11:14Because we're looking for the new face of the NBA
00:11:17And people are gravitating towards certain people
00:11:20Anthony Edwards is everybody's flavor of the week at this particular point
00:11:23But I think Tatum maybe carries that a little bit with him
00:11:26Like, hey, I have the signature shoe, I have the championship, I'm the cover of Sports Illustrated
00:11:31I need to do this to keep my stature as the next guy in this league
00:11:37And to be not played at all in two games is crazy
00:11:41And Barrett brought up, like, they were getting absolutely trounced in the first half
00:11:45At what point do you say, hey, we need to try something different here
00:11:48And maybe put some different people out there
00:11:50The thing that bothers me is, like, yes, the reason why Tatum isn't playing
00:11:54Is because he's not shooting the ball very well
00:11:56Well, it's really hard to shoot the ball very well when you have no rhythm at all
00:11:59You know what I mean? Like, he's not out there playing to get into rhythm
00:12:02I know the ball sometimes can be tough to get used to and depth perception and all that stuff
00:12:07But after a while, like, he's one of the best players in the league
00:12:10He's going to figure it out, and to not have the opportunity to, I think is frustrating
00:12:14And it's frustrating a lot of people
00:12:16Like, you know, you saw Tatum's mom going nuts, quote, you know, quote tweeting
00:12:20Dick Vitale trying to, like, figure this out, you know what I mean?
00:12:23She was quoting Greeny even
00:12:25It's frustrating because, you know, I think Brian's point of
00:12:30There should have been a discussion of, like, what everybody's role is
00:12:34And I feel like a lot of times there's no discussion at all
00:12:38About what everybody's supposed to be doing here
00:12:40I mean, there are definitely enough pieces on this team to make this work a little bit better
00:12:44I mean, I know you probably want the ball in Durant's hands
00:12:47But Durant's also, like, a pretty awesome just stand-alone shooter if you want to
00:12:50Derek White's an excellent shooter
00:12:52Halliburton, I know, is not a great defensive player, but he can shoot
00:12:55You know, Holliday, I mean, you can get on the line here, or you can go on and on
00:12:58What's really frustrating to me, and somebody pointed this out yesterday
00:13:02And I still can't quite wrap my head around this, boys
00:13:05Maybe either of you can help me
00:13:08And I haven't watched every game, so just flat out
00:13:10I have not watched every second of every game of the USA
00:13:12I apologize
00:13:15Have we seen, and this is, like, off of a
00:13:19What do all these teams have in common?
00:13:21They play a lot more together than Team USA does
00:13:24They have more time, et cetera, except they build chemistry
00:13:26That's why it seems to be easier for these guys
00:13:29If you're Steve Kerr, why wouldn't you play the three guys
00:13:32Derek White, Drew Holliday, and Jason Tame together
00:13:34They would have played more basketball together than any of these teams
00:13:37Like, any of these guys combined
00:13:39Like, they had just won the most games in the regular season together
00:13:43They won the NBA championship
00:13:45They've played over, as you said, Kaufman, over a hundred games together
00:13:49Right?
00:13:50And yet, these three guys haven't shared the court at the same time together
00:13:54In a single game?
00:13:56How is that a plan?
00:13:57Like, how does, and you guys watch
00:14:00Like, I was watching yesterday
00:14:01Drew Holliday did his thing where he leaves his assignment to go double someone
00:14:06I believe it was Jokic on the baseline on the left side
00:14:09He comes down, right, to double Jokic
00:14:11Jokic is crazy because he can steal everything
00:14:14And he just throws the ball to the top of the key where Drew's guy was
00:14:16But nobody went to go recover where Drew left a vacant spot
00:14:21And everybody's just standing around watching
00:14:22I think it was Bogdanovich hit another open three-point shot
00:14:25It was, like, one of these things where the chemistry sometimes would help
00:14:29And Steve Kerr has just thrown that out the window
00:14:32Like, we don't need chemistry
00:14:33They're so lucky
00:14:34Steve Kerr is lucky that Steph went off
00:14:37LeBron dialed it back to really carry the team on his back for a while
00:14:43And Embiid finally had a moment throughout this entire summer
00:14:47Finally had a second
00:14:48If those three things don't happen
00:14:50This is a ginormous collapse
00:14:53And Kerr has to eat a ton of crow, right?
00:14:55Instead, everything works out
00:14:57We're on to the French team and then the gold medal game
00:15:01I can't fathom for the life of me, boys
00:15:04How they haven't clicked to that at all whatsoever
00:15:07I'm sitting here looking at Steve Kerr saying
00:15:10Dude, the answer is sitting right in the face
00:15:13You can get all these guys' exposure if you want to
00:15:16But to not play Barrett
00:15:17To not play the three Celtics
00:15:19Who just won the NBA title
00:15:20Any minutes together, to me, is mind-blowing
00:15:25Yeah, and whenever Tatum's played with Derek White
00:15:27Those minutes have gone well
00:15:29Which shouldn't shock anybody
00:15:30Because they're always up in the top tier
00:15:32In terms of plus-minus, those two guys
00:15:35So it would have been interesting to play those guys
00:15:37But I really do think it's the shooting
00:15:40And maybe Kerr looks back at the playoff
00:15:42Sort of performance from Tatum
00:15:44Not shooting a three-well
00:15:45Even though the Celtics won a championship
00:15:46I think that really is the reason
00:15:48But the reason I just bring up the fact that
00:15:50If you look at Tatum's stature
00:15:53Compared to everybody else
00:15:54And what he did on the last Olympic team
00:15:56And also his standing in the NBA right now
00:15:59So if you're going into the 2024-2025 season
00:16:03Tatum is the best player on that team
00:16:06He's the best player on that team
00:16:07LeBron and Curry are older
00:16:09At this particular point in time
00:16:10We saw last year, Curry faded down
00:16:12The second half of the season
00:16:13The only possible...
00:16:14And Embiid, until we see him actually prove it
00:16:17In the postseason
00:16:18You're not taking Embiid over Jason Tatum
00:16:20Maybe you say, hey
00:16:21Embiid could be a better regular season player
00:16:23And win the MVP, fine
00:16:24But we've seen some of Embiid's issues
00:16:28When we get to the postseason
00:16:29Like, I don't know
00:16:30Game 7 against the Celtics
00:16:31When he gave up more points
00:16:33As the primary defender
00:16:34Than points he actually scored
00:16:35Because they just exposed him
00:16:37In terms of the drop coverage
00:16:38That wasn't it
00:16:39By the way, Embiid had his moment
00:16:40The seven straight points
00:16:41He was also part of the reason
00:16:43A big part of the reason they fell behind
00:16:45Because of the drop coverage
00:16:46That they were just hitting all those shots
00:16:48So the fact that they didn't use
00:16:50The 6'10", most versatile defender on the team
00:16:53That's irritating to me in that game
00:16:54Because Serbia scored 91
00:16:56Everyone points to the shooting
00:16:57They still scored 91 points
00:16:59And they were generating a lot of good shots
00:17:01And Tatum could have helped
00:17:02When it came to that
00:17:03I would imagine he'd be motivated
00:17:04Because he's had really
00:17:05Outside of the 10 and 10 performance
00:17:07He hasn't done much
00:17:08And the other thing that I would say
00:17:10As it pertains to Tatum
00:17:11Is, if he knew all this
00:17:13Maybe he says, hey
00:17:14I take this summer off
00:17:15I'll come back and be the face of the team in 2028
00:17:18Now I wonder
00:17:19Like, whoa
00:17:202028 rolls around
00:17:22Anthony Edwards is probably
00:17:24Going to be given the team
00:17:25He's going to be the face of the team
00:17:27But you start to think about it
00:17:29Team USA, they kind of
00:17:31We'll see some of these young guys coming up
00:17:33The Cooper flags of the world, etc.
00:17:35But Tatum sort of needs to be
00:17:37On that team for Team USA
00:17:39You look at Canada
00:17:40And I know Jamal Murray
00:17:41That's a whole different story
00:17:42How bad he was
00:17:43But Shea is going to be back
00:17:44And Shea just finished runner-up
00:17:46To the MVP
00:17:47Nembhardt was awesome
00:17:48Nembhardt was awesome for that team
00:17:49Outside of the elimination game
00:17:51Like, that's a team with a lot of talent
00:17:52They just have to find some big guys
00:17:54Now, Wemby at that point
00:17:55Is probably going to be
00:17:56The MVP of the NBA, you would think
00:17:58Even though he's not really scoring
00:17:59And they don't really have a ton of
00:18:00Or, although the dancing bear
00:18:02Has been going off of them
00:18:03They don't really have a lot of
00:18:04Depth on that team
00:18:05They don't really have a lot of guards
00:18:06And we'll see where Germany's at
00:18:07At that point in time
00:18:09But if I'm Jason Tatum
00:18:10If Kerr's the coach
00:18:11I'm fucking done
00:18:12Oh, I don't know
00:18:13Can you swear on this pod?
00:18:14Sorry, maybe you can
00:18:15You can when we're talking about this, Barrett
00:18:17Yeah, you're good
00:18:18All right, I didn't
00:18:19I forgot if we swore on this pod or not
00:18:21But if I'm Tatum, I wouldn't
00:18:22You swear on your pod?
00:18:23You should
00:18:24Yeah, I swear on my pod
00:18:25From time
00:18:26I tried at the beginning
00:18:27When I first did it
00:18:28My mom's like, you're swearing too much
00:18:29I'm like, all right
00:18:30I got to cut it back a little bit
00:18:31When it feels necessary
00:18:33And you know what?
00:18:34Right there, it did
00:18:35That just slipped
00:18:36But so my point being
00:18:37Like, if you guys were Tatum
00:18:38And Kerr's the coach in 2028
00:18:39Would you play for him?
00:18:40I certainly wouldn't
00:18:41If they give it a spolster
00:18:43Or Luke takes over
00:18:44Maybe I would
00:18:45Maybe it's not their decision
00:18:46But like, I would not be playing for Kerr
00:18:48Missoula takes over

00:20:51Let me tie these two things together
00:20:53Kind of what you're talking about
00:20:54With is Kerr going to be the coach
00:20:56And what you were talking about, Ev
00:20:57In terms of why aren't
00:20:59White Tatum, Holiday
00:21:00As a trio seeing the floor together
00:21:03So I don't know if you guys saw this
00:21:05We certainly haven't mentioned it
00:21:06Although Ev did bring up the
00:21:08Sports Illustrated issue
00:21:10And cover and all of that earlier
00:21:12There were two guys
00:21:13We know, we had Chris Mannix
00:21:14On with us recently
00:21:15There were two guys that were
00:21:16Featured in that article
00:21:17Tatum was one
00:21:18The other, Bob Cousy
00:21:20Well, Cousy has talked about this
00:21:21With Dan Shaughnessy
00:21:23In the Boston Globe
00:21:24And here's what Cous had to say
00:21:26Tatum's on the cover of
00:21:27Sports Illustrated this month
00:21:28Any experts that I have read lately
00:21:30Have chosen him in the top five
00:21:31Sometimes number one
00:21:32In the bleeping world
00:21:34Now Kerr is telling the world
00:21:35He doesn't agree
00:21:36In a 40 minute game
00:21:37If you can't find five minutes
00:21:39To play somebody on the team
00:21:40Without hurting yourself
00:21:41When Kerr did it last week
00:21:42He was in no danger of losing the game
00:21:44But in this case
00:21:45They got down by 17 points
00:21:47And he's got to worry about
00:21:48Losing the game
00:21:49And then to not let Tatum
00:21:50Get off the bench
00:21:51To me, there's got to be
00:21:52Some kind of bias he has got
00:21:54Against the Celtics
00:21:56Let me ask you guys this
00:21:58Is what we've seen so far
00:22:01And I personally would lean more
00:22:04In this direction than the other
00:22:06Is it more coaching malpractice
00:22:08On the part of Steve Kerr and company
00:22:10But he's the head coach
00:22:11He's the face of this thing
00:22:12He's got to own it
00:22:13Or is there bias against the Celtics?
00:22:15I mean, I hesitate to see that
00:22:18Given the run that we see
00:22:19From Holliday and White
00:22:20But you guys tell me
00:22:22Does he want his guys being
00:22:24You know, Curry, formerly Durant
00:22:26To be more at the center stage
00:22:28Of this thing?
00:22:32You know, you can make the argument
00:22:34That they're just trying to let
00:22:35Curry and LeBron and Durant
00:22:37Get one more
00:22:38And have them be a part of this thing
00:22:40Yeah, because they're going to
00:22:41Age out, obviously
00:22:42Because this is it
00:22:43I mean, this is Curry's only
00:22:44Olympic appearance
00:22:45LeBron, he's, you know, been
00:22:47The guy forever
00:22:48And Durant's the all-time leading scorer
00:22:50In Olympic basketball history
00:22:51For Team USA
00:22:52So, like, obviously you have
00:22:53Some legends on this team
00:22:54And clearly, they
00:22:56And I'm not trying to say
00:22:57Those guys shouldn't be playing
00:22:58Because they legitimately won the game
00:23:00For Team USA yesterday
00:23:02Or on Thursday
00:23:03So, like, that's
00:23:04You can't really argue with it
00:23:06But the reliance on those guys
00:23:09I think is an interesting question
00:23:11Like, why is Curry sticking
00:23:13And, like, the Embiid point
00:23:15Is a fantastic one
00:23:16Sticking with Embiid
00:23:17If that guy gets double teamed
00:23:18He has no clue what to do
00:23:20And it's, like, growing
00:23:22Increasingly frustrating
00:23:23I watched that game
00:23:24And I can't believe
00:23:25Anthony Davis doesn't play more
00:23:26Because whenever the ball goes up
00:23:28Embiid, if the ball's not coming
00:23:30To him off the rebound
00:23:31He doesn't move
00:23:32He has cement feet
00:23:33Meanwhile, at least Anthony Davis
00:23:35Is trying to get a rebound
00:23:36And tip it out to somewhere
00:23:38At least Bam Adebayo
00:23:39Is trying to tip it out
00:23:40To some other guy
00:23:41Embiid just stands there
00:23:43And it drives me crazy
00:23:44Look, I don't think
00:23:46It's a Celtics
00:23:47Like, an anti-Celtics thing
00:23:50I don't think it's that
00:23:52I will say this
00:23:53Thank you to Team USA
00:23:55For providing some motivation
00:23:57For Jaylen and Jason
00:23:58As they come back
00:23:59To try and defend a title here
00:24:01Like, you know, Jaylen
00:24:02Obviously has got some issues
00:24:04With Team USA
00:24:05And now Tatum does
00:24:06So thank you very much, guys
00:24:07But, like, I think
00:24:09It's more of a Kerr thing
00:24:11And I think what's interesting
00:24:12Is to read the Golden State fan
00:24:15Perspective of this whole thing
00:24:17Because they've been dealing
00:24:18With this for a long time
00:24:20I mean, I'm not
00:24:21In that universe
00:24:23I'm not reading the discourse
00:24:24Of after every single game
00:24:26That Golden State has
00:24:27But Kerr's rotations
00:24:29Apparently have been a problem
00:24:30For a long time in Golden State
00:24:33And this is just more
00:24:34Illuminating of the fact
00:24:35That his rotations
00:24:36Are a little off
00:24:37And, like I said
00:24:39I think Curry and LeBron
00:24:40Specifically really bailed
00:24:42Kerr out yesterday
00:24:43Because if it doesn't go well
00:24:44And they lose
00:24:45Kerr's got to answer
00:24:46Way more questions
00:24:47About what he does
00:24:49And doesn't do
00:24:50As the coach of this team
00:24:51Yeah, well, I think
00:24:52It's with Kerr
00:24:53I don't think it's a specific
00:24:54Bias against the Celtics
00:24:56But I do think there's
00:24:58Sort of some
00:24:59Whether it's, like,
00:25:00Unconscious or not
00:25:01It's, um
00:25:02It's like a previous belief
00:25:03He had
00:25:04About Tatum, right?
00:25:05So if you go back
00:25:06To the 2022 Finals
00:25:08They had both
00:25:09Jalen and Tatum's number
00:25:11Right, where
00:25:12With Jalen
00:25:13It was foursome to his left hand
00:25:14And it was Tatum
00:25:15After this amount of dribbles
00:25:17We want to force him
00:25:18Off the three-point line
00:25:19We don't want him
00:25:20To get to the basket
00:25:21So it's like
00:25:22He figured out a game plan
00:25:23How to stop Tatum
00:25:24Although that was two years ago
00:25:25He was a much better player
00:25:26And I think he sees Tatum
00:25:27Going back to this whole
00:25:28Ball stopper thing
00:25:29As, like, not his
00:25:30Typical type of player
00:25:31Like, if you look at
00:25:32Sort of, although he did
00:25:33Trade for Shaq
00:25:34But you look at the
00:25:35Steve Nash era
00:25:36Where the ball is fine around
00:25:37And if you look at
00:25:38Some of those, like
00:25:39Role players
00:25:40Because he's looking for Tatum
00:25:41To be a role player
00:25:42On this team
00:25:43If he is going to play, right?
00:25:44You think about
00:25:45The Andre Iguodalas
00:25:46The Sean Livingston
00:25:47Remember when he was there
00:25:48Like, those guys
00:25:49Are just, like, really
00:25:50Quick decision makers, right?
00:25:51So I think that's part of it
00:25:52With Curtis
00:25:53He just doesn't see Tatum
00:25:54Fitting into the way
00:25:55That he wants basketball
00:25:57To be played
00:25:58Even if it's wrong
00:25:59I think that's what it is
00:26:00I think it's a bias on
00:26:01Sort of, Tatum's game
00:26:03But the one thing
00:26:04I'll say about Kerr
00:26:05Is ever since that finals
00:26:07That he beat the Celtics in
00:26:09Let's acknowledge, like
00:26:10This dude has lost his fastball
00:26:12I mean, he had
00:26:13And I'm not blaming him
00:26:14For this happening
00:26:15But he lost his team
00:26:16Two years ago
00:26:17They, remember
00:26:18They couldn't win
00:26:19Like, on the road
00:26:20It was a complete debacle
00:26:21They had the Jordan Pool
00:26:22Draymond situation
00:26:23They couldn't win
00:26:24Any games on the road
00:26:25That team completely
00:26:26Fell apart
00:26:27And then you go to
00:26:28This past season
00:26:29To Valenti's point
00:26:30About his rotations
00:26:31He wouldn't play Kaminga
00:26:33Until Kaminga called out
00:26:34The coaching staff
00:26:35Kaminga turned out to be
00:26:36The second best player
00:26:37On the team
00:26:38And look, I'm not blaming him
00:26:39For the Draymond issues
00:26:40We know Draymond
00:26:41Missed a bunch of time
00:26:42As well
00:26:43But it also took him a while
00:26:44To get to trace
00:26:45Jackson Davis
00:26:46When anybody watching
00:26:47Kavon Looney this year
00:26:48Knew that Kavon Looney
00:26:50Like, couldn't move anymore
00:26:52Okay?
00:26:53And we know how important
00:26:54He was to the dynasty
00:26:55They built
00:26:56He was awesome in the series
00:26:57And the Celtics
00:26:58I still think the guy's
00:26:59Getting offensive rebounds
00:27:00Against the Celtics
00:27:01And the other thing
00:27:02That Kerr did
00:27:03Specifically this year
00:27:05And this kind of goes
00:27:06Full circle back
00:27:07To the whole Celtics point
00:27:09He actually thought
00:27:11Draymond Green's strategy
00:27:13Against the Celtics
00:27:15Was a good strategy
00:27:17To just leave
00:27:18Jalen Brown open
00:27:19Because of his
00:27:20Three point percentage
00:27:22Those weren't
00:27:23His three point percentage
00:27:24Isn't just on
00:27:25Wide open threes
00:27:26He's an NBA player
00:27:27If you leave him open
00:27:29He's going to hit
00:27:31Basically walk through
00:27:32Jump shots
00:27:33Or shoot around
00:27:34Jump shots
00:27:35Steve Kerr actually
00:27:36Went with that plan
00:27:37Like he was presented
00:27:38This plan
00:27:39Hey guys
00:27:40Let's just leave
00:27:41Jalen Brown open
00:27:42He thought it was
00:27:43A good idea
00:27:44Okay?
00:27:45So Steve Kerr
00:27:46From my perspective
00:27:47Has lost
00:27:48His fastball
00:27:49For the past two years
00:27:50Ever since they won
00:27:51That championship
00:27:52And remember
00:27:53I'm not saying
00:27:54He made the pick
00:27:55He made the pick
00:27:56For the past two years
00:27:57When they decided
00:27:58To draft James Wiseman
00:27:59I know it's weird
00:28:00In terms of
00:28:01The whole COVID situation
00:28:02But there's a million guys
00:28:03That went after him
00:28:04That could have
00:28:05Fit on that team
00:28:06That could have
00:28:07Helped that
00:28:08Propel that dynasty
00:28:09Going forward
00:28:10I know they got 22
00:28:11And they're always
00:28:12Going to have
00:28:1320-22
00:28:14And as I mentioned earlier
00:28:15He traded for Shaq
00:28:16On his team
00:28:17And made absolutely
00:28:18No sense to trade for Shaq
00:28:19Because it took away
00:28:20What they did well
00:28:21Which was
00:28:22Playing fast
00:28:23And getting shots up
00:28:25Because if they lose
00:28:26That game
00:28:27And Tatum doesn't play
00:28:28It's like
00:28:29Hold on
00:28:30Serbia just put up
00:28:3191 points on you
00:28:32And you have this guy
00:28:33That was just on
00:28:34The best defense
00:28:35In the playoffs
00:28:36And you didn't use him
00:28:37Like
00:28:38Didn't he cover centers
00:28:39In the playoffs?
00:28:40Like you didn't
00:28:41You didn't want to use him
00:28:42At all so
00:28:43I think Kerr's been
00:28:44Absolutely atrocious
00:28:45Throughout this run
00:28:46People are giving him
00:28:47Credit for his lineups
00:28:48I'm like
00:28:49Look at who's on the team
00:28:50Like how difficult
00:28:51This situation
00:28:52When did the lineups
00:28:53When you mentioned
00:28:54LeBron was awesome
00:28:55Curry was awesome
00:28:56In that game
00:28:57The starting lineup
00:28:58The reason they got
00:28:59Into that hole
00:29:00The starting lineup
00:29:01Amazingly
00:29:02With Drew Holiday
00:29:03Out there right
00:29:04The starting lineup
00:29:05Is not good on defense
00:29:06How many plus
00:29:07And look
00:29:08LeBron's tipped up
00:29:09His defense
00:29:10Part of the reason
00:29:11They won is because
00:29:12LeBron took on
00:29:13The Jokic matchup late
00:29:14So Embiid could
00:29:15Kind of like
00:29:16Zone up behind him
00:29:17And help out at the basket
00:29:18Who's a plus defender
00:29:19Right now in the
00:29:20Starting lineup?
00:29:21Drew Holiday
00:29:22That's it
00:29:23Booker's not a plus defender
00:29:24Curry is
00:29:25At this point
00:29:26In his career
00:29:27Well below average
00:29:28Remember Carlick Jones
00:29:29Earlier in the tournament
00:29:30Just absolutely
00:29:31Cooked the guy
00:29:32In pool play
00:29:33They don't have
00:29:34Embiid can be
00:29:35Sort of
00:29:36You can take advantage
00:29:37Of Embiid in this
00:29:38With the drop coverage
00:29:39With all the shooting
00:29:40From some of these
00:29:41Other teams
00:29:42So part of the reason
00:29:43They're in that hole
00:29:44Is because
00:29:45The combination
00:29:46Was not a good
00:29:47Combination defensively
00:29:48Even if
00:29:49That combination
00:29:50With Durant at the end
00:29:51Of the hole
00:29:52Is because the
00:29:53Defense is so bad
00:29:54Quick break from
00:29:55Today's show
00:29:56To tell you
00:29:57Today's show
00:29:58Is brought to you
00:29:59By game time
00:30:00I remember
00:30:01First time I went
00:30:02To a game
00:30:03A Sox game
00:30:04When I was a kid
00:30:05The Milwaukee Brewers
00:30:06Were in town
00:30:07And literally
00:30:08My only
00:30:09Memory of that
00:30:10Is Mo Vaughn
00:30:11My favorite player
00:30:12At the time
00:30:13Hit a home run
00:30:14It was with my
00:30:15Grandparents
00:30:16It was like the
00:30:17Only time he went
00:30:18To Fenway Park
00:30:19It was a really
00:30:20Great day
00:30:21With the help

00:31:56Let's go back to the motivation thing too
00:31:58That Ev had brought up before
00:32:00Because we talked about this
00:32:02A couple weeks back
00:32:03Whenever we had Adam Helmelsbach on
00:32:04Right before he left for Paris
00:32:06And we were talking about
00:32:07The Jalen situation
00:32:08And being pissed about
00:32:10Not making it
00:32:11Holding it against Nike
00:32:12And what's the relationship
00:32:14With Derek White gonna be
00:32:15All of these different things
00:32:16That have obviously been
00:32:17Talking points
00:32:18As it relates to the Celtics
00:32:19But Ev you mentioned before
00:32:20You know
00:32:21This is just another thing
00:32:22To fire up Tatum
00:32:23And you know
00:32:24Helmsbach
00:32:25I guess for both of these guys
00:32:27Right
00:32:28Like with Brown it's
00:32:29You know
00:32:30He wasn't all NBA
00:32:31He
00:32:32You know
00:32:33Wasn't named to
00:32:34Team USA
00:32:35And has had all of this
00:32:36Sort of drama
00:32:37And people questioning his
00:32:39What kind of guy he is
00:32:41All the Stephen A. Smith stuff
00:32:43And he's not marketable
00:32:44And guys don't necessarily
00:32:45Like him
00:32:46And on and on
00:32:47And with Tatum obviously
00:32:48He doesn't win MVP
00:32:49And I don't mean
00:32:50In the league
00:32:51I mean
00:32:52Conference finals
00:32:53Or NBA finals
00:32:54He is of course
00:32:55First team all NBA
00:32:56And he is on Team USA
00:32:57But now he's not playing
00:32:58All that much
00:32:59And he gets benched
00:33:00In two games
00:33:01In limited minutes elsewhere
00:33:02And who knows
00:33:03If he's gonna play
00:33:04Or however much
00:33:05In the gold medal game
00:33:06Against France
00:33:07And you know
00:33:08Basically does the concept
00:33:09Of extra motivation exist
00:33:10And Helmsbach is of the mind
00:33:11That no
00:33:12It doesn't
00:33:13You know
00:33:14If you're giving 100%
00:33:15You're giving 100%
00:33:16You can't go to 110
00:33:17Like it doesn't exist
00:33:18You know
00:33:19People like to say
00:33:20I'm giving 110%
00:33:21That's not a thing
00:33:22You're either giving 100%
00:33:23Or you're not
00:33:24But
00:33:25I don't know
00:33:26To me
00:33:27Ev, Barrett, whoever
00:33:28Like there's a
00:33:29There's a middle ground there
00:33:30That does exist
00:33:31To where
00:33:32You know
00:33:33You can certainly
00:33:34Brady
00:33:35Tom Brady
00:33:36Talked about it all the time
00:33:37Throughout his 20 plus years
00:33:38In the league
00:33:39Of their
00:33:40You know
00:33:41Always being motivated
00:33:42By being number 199
00:33:43Or something
00:33:44To get pissed about
00:33:45There was a chip on his shoulder
00:33:46For some reason
00:33:47I think that is very true
00:33:48Of a lot of professional athletes
00:33:49Not just the great ones
00:33:50But even
00:33:51You know
00:33:52Michael Jordan
00:33:53Would always see
00:33:54There was
00:33:55In the
00:33:56The last dance
00:33:57The bulls thing
00:33:58People talking about
00:33:59You know
00:34:00How
00:34:01How Jordan
00:34:02Even if there wasn't
00:34:03A critic
00:34:04There wasn't a naysayer
00:34:05He would make one up
00:34:06In his own mind
00:34:07Just to find that
00:34:08Extra gear
00:34:09I mean
00:34:10Is
00:34:11Celtics fans want to believe
00:34:12That they have a
00:34:13Warpath
00:34:14This coming season
00:34:15That all of this
00:34:16Crap
00:34:17Has only
00:34:18Further fueled
00:34:19Boston to banner 19
00:34:20Do you guys agree
00:34:21With that concept
00:34:22Or do you think
00:34:23That's just something
00:34:24That we say
00:34:25To make ourselves
00:34:26Feel good
00:34:27No I agree with this
00:34:28100%
00:34:29Again
00:34:30Watching Tom Brady
00:34:31Do it for 20 years
00:34:32You have a front row seat
00:34:33For it
00:34:34You know
00:34:35It's not easy
00:34:36To win championships
00:34:37In any league
00:34:38That you participate in
00:34:39And it's really hard
00:34:40To go back to back
00:34:41Sometimes
00:34:42You need a little
00:34:43Extra motivation
00:34:44A little extra push
00:34:45To
00:34:46Do something
00:34:47You normally
00:34:48Wouldn't do
00:34:49Something out of your
00:34:50Comfort zone
00:34:51You need someone
00:34:52Telling you that
00:34:53You can't do this again
00:34:54What's been the biggest
00:34:55Topic
00:34:56One of the biggest
00:34:57Topics is
00:34:58There hasn't been
00:34:59A repeat champion
00:35:00Since Golden State
00:35:01Nobody can really
00:35:02Do this anymore
00:35:03With the current
00:35:04NBA rules
00:35:05Etc
00:35:06All those things
00:35:07You can take
00:35:08And file away
00:35:09And be like
00:35:10I'll say
00:35:11With Tatum and Brown
00:35:12Like they haven't
00:35:13Needed
00:35:14Maybe that's
00:35:15The wrong way
00:35:16To put it
00:35:17Obviously
00:35:18A lot of things
00:35:19Came out after
00:35:20They lost to Golden State
00:35:21In the finals
00:35:22On their home floor
00:35:23And how much that
00:35:24Motivated them
00:35:25For the next season
00:35:26Right
00:35:27Cause they're like
00:35:28We hated hearing
00:35:29The Warriors
00:35:30Celebrate in our
00:35:31Locker rooms
00:35:32Like in Boston
00:35:33And drove us nuts
00:35:34And obviously
00:35:35They got to the
00:35:36Eastern Conference
00:35:37Finals
00:35:38And Tatum rolls his
00:35:39Ass off
00:35:40Tatum and Brown
00:35:41Have always
00:35:42Come back
00:35:43The next season
00:35:44Like a little bit
00:35:45Better or in certain
00:35:46Cases a lot better
00:35:47Than they were the
00:35:48Year prior
00:35:49So I don't know
00:35:50If they need
00:35:51The extra motivation
00:35:52To come back
00:35:53And be stronger
00:35:54But this certainly
00:35:55Doesn't like
00:35:56It's not a
00:35:57Hindrance
00:35:58To them
00:35:59Maybe
00:36:00Cause you know
00:36:01Jalen used to
00:36:02Put out videos
00:36:03Of him being in
00:36:04The lab
00:36:05Working on stuff
00:36:06Working with T-Mac
00:36:07You know
00:36:08He would always
00:36:09Post videos
00:36:10From that kind of
00:36:11Stuff
00:36:12With Tatum
00:36:13You always know
00:36:14He's working out
00:36:15With Hamlin
00:36:16Cause Hamlin's
00:36:17Always posting things
00:36:18Right
00:36:19So these guys
00:36:20Obviously put in the
00:36:21Work in the off season
00:36:22But you know
00:36:23If you need a little
00:36:24Extra motivation
00:36:25To carry you
00:36:26To that next level
00:36:27I mean Kobe
00:36:28He's celebrated
00:36:29As an absolute
00:36:30Maniac
00:36:31Cause he's always
00:36:32Looking for some
00:36:33Edge to become
00:36:34Better
00:36:35You know
00:36:36He's waking up
00:36:38The guys
00:36:39I think on the
00:36:40O-18
00:36:41Were coming back
00:36:42From the club
00:36:43At like
00:36:44Four o'clock
00:36:45In the morning
00:36:46Or whatever
00:36:47And Kobe was getting
00:36:48Up to go to the gym
00:36:49And it's like
00:36:50Oh that's the kind
00:36:51Of work ethic
00:36:52We need to
00:36:53Become that next
00:36:54Level guy
00:36:55It all comes in
00:36:56Different shapes
00:36:57And sizes
00:36:58And flavors
00:36:59But I certainly
00:37:00Don't think this is
00:37:01A hindrance
00:37:02To those two guys
00:37:03Specifically coming
00:37:04Back and saying
00:37:05Screw all this
00:37:06Nobody thinking that
00:37:07We're good enough
00:37:08For anything
00:37:09You know
00:37:10I don't think it's
00:37:11A bad thing
00:37:12Compared to you
00:37:13No I think if it's
00:37:14A good thing
00:37:15I thought the whole
00:37:16The Jalen situation
00:37:17I thought was a little
00:37:18Bit odd
00:37:19Just because
00:37:20We didn't hear
00:37:21Anything about this
00:37:22Like when the
00:37:23Original team
00:37:24Was sort of
00:37:25They chose the
00:37:26Original team
00:37:27He wasn't mad
00:37:28About not being
00:37:29On the team
00:37:30And then it wasn't
00:37:31Until Derek White
00:37:32Was the replacement
00:37:33And I know like
00:37:34Derek White and him
00:37:35Look man he just won
00:37:36The finals MVP
00:37:37In the Eastern Conference
00:37:38Finals MVP
00:37:39Maybe he's just
00:37:40He's feeling really good
00:37:41So he wanted to say
00:37:42That it did
00:37:43And based on the way
00:37:44That they've sort of
00:37:45Handled Tatum
00:37:46I don't know what
00:37:47Type of role Jalen
00:37:48Would have had on this team
00:37:49Right?
00:37:50Because he's a guy
00:37:51That had the ball
00:37:52In his hands a lot
00:37:53And he's really
00:37:54A guy that's accustomed
00:37:55To having the ball
00:37:56So I don't know
00:37:57What his role
00:37:58Would have been on the team
00:37:59But he obviously
00:38:00If he's going to use
00:38:01This as motivation
00:38:02I'm fine with it
00:38:03I think the bigger
00:38:04The focus
00:38:05I think he was already
00:38:06Mad about that
00:38:07And then this
00:38:08Team USA thing
00:38:09Remember he said
00:38:10I don't win anything
00:38:11Or I don't win shit
00:38:12Or whatever it was
00:38:13When he won
00:38:14Eastern Conference
00:38:15Finals MVP
00:38:16And I don't know
00:38:17If I mentioned this
00:38:18Here before
00:38:19But basically
00:38:20They're the only team
00:38:21In NBA history
00:38:22That has won
00:38:2364 games
00:38:24And didn't have
00:38:25Either two
00:38:26All NBA guys
00:38:27Or have the MVP
00:38:28So it was one
00:38:29Or the other
00:38:30It's like
00:38:31Dirk in 07
00:38:32Right?
00:38:33He wins 64 games
00:38:34And only have one
00:38:35All NBA game
00:38:36All NBA guy
00:38:37As it pertains
00:38:38To Tatum
00:38:39I worry a little
00:38:40I do worry about
00:38:41The shot
00:38:42Like with the whole
00:38:43Drew Hanlon thing
00:38:44Like I wonder if they
00:38:45Like mess around
00:38:46With that thing
00:38:47Too much
00:38:48It seems like
00:38:49It's in his head
00:38:50What's ever going on
00:38:51Because he's too good
00:38:52Of a shooter
00:38:53To be shooting this poorly
00:38:54In the postseason
00:38:55And obviously
00:38:56The one that he shot
00:38:57Off the backboard
00:38:58In this tournament
00:38:59Is where
00:39:00But I do think
00:39:01There will be
00:39:02So Tatum
00:39:03And Jalen
00:39:04Are going to be
00:39:05Back to taking
00:39:06Pretty close
00:39:07To the amount of shots
00:39:08They were taking
00:39:09Two years ago
00:39:10Where they sacrificed
00:39:11A couple of shots
00:39:12Per game
00:39:13So I think those guys
00:39:14Their numbers could actually
00:39:15Go up
00:39:16And of course
00:39:17I think Derek White's
00:39:18Numbers will go up
00:39:19I think Drew will have
00:39:20More of an offensive role
00:39:21During the regular season
00:39:22Although Drew's the one guy
00:39:23Where I'm like
00:39:24Let's be careful
00:39:25With the minutes here
00:39:26Let's be careful
00:39:27With the games
00:39:28Just because he's
00:39:29A guy
00:39:30Outside of out
00:39:31There's the
00:39:32Team USA stuff
00:39:33Kaufman
00:39:34That you point out
00:39:35With Jalen and Tatum
00:39:36There's the
00:39:37All NBA stuff
00:39:38With Jalen
00:39:39And then
00:39:40The last sort of
00:39:41Part of this is
00:39:42Let's not forget
00:39:43What everybody was saying
00:39:44Like during the playoffs
00:39:45Remember everybody's
00:39:46Picking Dallas
00:39:47More ESPN experts
00:39:48Pick Dallas than
00:39:49The Celtics
00:39:50And everybody's
00:39:51Sort of idea with this is
00:39:52Oh they didn't play anybody
00:39:53All these teams had injuries
00:39:54And everybody dismissed
00:39:55The fact that
00:39:56A guy that averaged
00:39:5720 points per game
00:39:58For the Celtics
00:39:59Wasn't playing at all
00:40:00It's Donovan Mitchell
00:40:01Going down for Cleveland
00:40:02Right or Jimmy Butler
00:40:03Although
00:40:04We're never going to
00:40:05Beat the Celtics
00:40:06The Mavericks were healthy
00:40:07They had their guys
00:40:08When they were in the
00:40:09NBA finals
00:40:10And they just beat
00:40:11Minnesota who beat
00:40:12The defending champs
00:40:13If you want to go
00:40:14Like down that whole road
00:40:15But the other thing is
00:40:16And I hate to bring up
00:40:17A Warriors comparison
00:40:18Because we just
00:40:19I was just bashing
00:40:20Steve Kerr
00:40:21Remember this same
00:40:22Conversation happened
00:40:23With the Warriors
00:40:24After they won
00:40:25It was hey
00:40:26Kyrie didn't play
00:40:27Remember Kyrie got hurt
00:40:28In game one
00:40:29The Cavs actually had a lead
00:40:30They were up 2-1
00:40:31In that series
00:40:32And then the next year
00:40:33Now ultimately
00:40:34The Warriors didn't win
00:40:35The NBA championship
00:40:36But they broke the record
00:40:37For the most wins
00:40:38In NBA history
00:40:39It was almost like
00:40:40Scorched earth
00:40:41I think that the Celtics
00:40:42Will come out
00:40:43Sort of in that fashion
00:40:44Now I hope they're careful
00:40:45And I think Missoula
00:40:46Is really good about
00:40:47The minutes stuff
00:40:48Outside of Tatum and Brown
00:40:49Like sometimes
00:40:50Why is Tatum in the game
00:40:51When they're up 20
00:40:52But he's really good with Al
00:40:53And that's the scary thing
00:40:54About Porzingis
00:40:55Because they were really
00:40:56Careful with Porzingis
00:40:57And he still ended up
00:40:58Winning the championship
00:40:59But my point with all this
00:41:00Is I think like
00:41:01For a team that
00:41:02Won a championship
00:41:03It's usually like
00:41:04This coronation right
00:41:05Like oh
00:41:06Giannis had the
00:41:0750 point game
00:41:08He finally won a championship
00:41:09Look what Kawhi did
00:41:10With the Raptors right
00:41:11LeBron
00:41:12Look at what he did
00:41:13In Cleveland
00:41:14Like beating that team
00:41:15Coming back from the
00:41:16Crate
00:41:17Even the Lakers
00:41:18Where they won
00:41:19The Peach Jam
00:41:20That AAU tournament
00:41:21They had in the
00:41:22In the Orlando bubble
00:41:23They won that
00:41:24Like he gets all this
00:41:25Credit and says
00:41:26It's the best championship
00:41:27They've ever won
00:41:28Even though nobody
00:41:29Had to travel
00:41:30But anyway
00:41:31My point with this is
00:41:32The Celtics
00:41:33It sort of felt like
00:41:34The opposite right
00:41:35Like they
00:41:36They haven't really
00:41:37Like I think the
00:41:38Players feel that way
00:41:39But there's almost been
00:41:40Like Tatum gets
00:41:41Criticism for not winning
00:41:42The NBA finals MVP
00:41:43It's kind of like
00:41:44Similar to what
00:41:45Happened with Curry
00:41:46Back at the beginning
00:41:47Of his career
00:41:48So I do think
00:41:49There's going to be
00:41:50Sort of like this
00:41:51FU attitude
00:41:52That this team has
00:41:53Yeah I want to hop
00:41:54On that for a second
00:41:55Because I was thinking
00:41:56Everything that has to
00:41:57Surround the Celtics
00:41:58This whole year
00:41:59Has just been an
00:42:00Absolute nightmare
00:42:01From like just a
00:42:02Discourse standpoint
00:42:03Like all season
00:42:04I mean you guys saw
00:42:05It was like
00:42:06Oh you know
00:42:07It won't mean anything
00:42:08Unless they win the finals
00:42:09Like nothing mattered
00:42:10Right and then they
00:42:11Go to the playoffs
00:42:12It's like oh
00:42:13Everybody's hurt
00:42:14This doesn't matter
00:42:15It just feels like
00:42:16There's like a toxic
00:42:17Discussion around this team
00:42:18And like even on
00:42:19Team USA right
00:42:20Like if Tatum
00:42:21Doesn't play
00:42:22And that's the
00:42:23Biggest storyline
00:42:24Dude
00:42:25And I know
00:42:26We're in the
00:42:27Dead time of content
00:42:28Right they got
00:42:29Footballs back
00:42:30So we don't have
00:42:31To deal with this
00:42:32All the time
00:42:33But that story
00:42:34Was like the
00:42:35A-block of like
00:42:36First things first
00:42:37And first take
00:42:38And like everybody
00:42:39Had a comment on it
00:42:40And like it just
00:42:41To me
00:42:42It just seems
00:42:43Like there's a lot
00:42:44Of negativity
00:42:45Surrounding this team
00:42:46Right no matter
00:42:47What it is
00:42:48Like it's not
00:42:49Like Jason's
00:42:50Like a hard guy
00:42:51To root for
00:42:52You know what I mean
00:42:53He's a great dad
00:42:54He's never like
00:42:55Involved in anything
00:42:56Off the court
00:42:57That has to do
00:42:58Like poorly
00:42:59He's not like he's
00:43:00John and I'm not
00:43:01Trying to kill
00:43:02John Moran here
00:43:03He's just made
00:43:04Bad decisions
00:43:05But like he's not
00:43:06Like John Moran
00:43:07Out there like
00:43:08Flashing guns
00:43:09At nightclubs
00:43:10And things
00:43:11He's like pretty
00:43:12Like laid back
00:43:13Just plays basketball
00:43:14And is a great dad
00:43:15Like I
00:43:16I compared him
00:43:17To Tim Duncan
00:43:18Years ago
00:43:19Because it just
00:43:20Seems like he's
00:43:21The easiest guy
00:43:22To root for
00:43:23And there's just
00:43:24Negativity
00:43:25That follows him
00:43:26Everywhere
00:43:27And it's driving me crazy
00:43:28And now
00:43:29Here we have this thing
00:43:30We've talked about it
00:43:31For an hour
00:43:32Basically right
00:43:33We haven't even
00:43:34Talked about anything else
00:43:35We haven't talked about
00:43:36Yabusele
00:43:37Like finding a role
00:43:38With Team France
00:43:39Like was Danny right
00:43:40About that the whole time
00:43:41We haven't talked about
00:43:42The possible FSG stuff
00:43:43We've talked about
00:43:44Only about Jason Tatum
00:43:45In this one game
00:43:46For an hour
00:43:47Why is it like this boys
00:43:48Like why is it
00:43:49Help me out
00:43:50We're
00:43:51We're
00:43:52We're

00:54:30Schroeder is like a totally different player in FIBA.
00:54:33The Wagner brothers are really good and Franz just,
00:54:36he wasn't good in the last game
00:54:38and he had been having an outstanding tournament,
00:54:40but those guys have a lot of athletic players,
00:54:42so I thought Germany would have had a chance.
00:54:43I just, I don't think they have enough offense
00:54:46to compete with the US
00:54:47and I actually think what they're gonna do defensively,
00:54:50and remember Embiid went, I think Embiid's,
00:54:53wasn't Embiid's 70-point game against Wembley?
00:54:56I believe it was, but I think what-
00:54:58Not against Gobert, because it was,
00:55:00well, no, no, you might be right, you're right.
00:55:03I think it was against Wembley,
00:55:04but I could be wrong on that,
00:55:05but I think that they're gonna put somebody else on Wembley.
00:55:10I don't think that it's gonna be Embiid.
00:55:13I think they may, we saw Lebron go at Jokic,
00:55:15I think they may try to get physical with Wembley
00:55:18and just have Embiid off the ball.
00:55:19I just, I don't think France has enough firepower
00:55:22to keep up with the US and quite frankly,
00:55:24I don't think they're gonna be able
00:55:25to stop the US offensively.
00:55:27Their tougher game was in the semifinals against Serbia,
00:55:31and I would say that's at least,
00:55:32it has to be in some capacity, a wake-up call for Team USA.
00:55:37I wish it was Germany to be, and look,
00:55:39the atmosphere is probably gonna be crazy, right,
00:55:41because they're playing at home.
00:55:43Obviously, the French crowd hates Embiid
00:55:45because Embiid was contemplating playing for them.
00:55:47So maybe the atmosphere helps France,
00:55:50like the home court advantage, but I just, I don't see.
00:55:53I wish it was Germany or Canada, quite frankly.
00:55:57Not excited, because France was so bad in pool play.
00:55:59The reason they're in this is because
00:56:01they got that stupid four-point play.
00:56:03Remember that?
00:56:04At the end of the Japan game, they got a stupid,
00:56:05and they kicked Rui Hachimura out of the game.
00:56:08Like, that's the reason they beat Japan.
00:56:09That's the only reason they're in this.
00:56:11Yeah, but it only takes, it's only one game,
00:56:13so I don't know that anything can happen.
00:56:15My point with Kauffman was, we were fishing around
00:56:18for something to talk about,
00:56:19because until Tatum got benched against Serbia,
00:56:23there was really just not a lot to talk about,
00:56:25and so I was like, you know, can we do a segment on,
00:56:29good thing they said they got their title now,
00:56:31because Wembley's coming, Wembley's here,
00:56:33he's gonna start to own this league,
00:56:34and it's gonna be way harder to win,
00:56:36because Wembley's nuts, and then, of course,
00:56:38the Serbia game's happened, so, you know,
00:56:40obviously, things are a little different.
00:56:43I'm not, after what I just saw against Serbia,
00:56:45again, I believe in the USA, I think they're gonna win,
00:56:48but, you know, Wembley can go off for a game,
00:56:50and the fact that he can dominate the game
00:56:53on both ends of the floor if he's shooting well,
00:56:55like, I know he hasn't shot well,
00:56:57but, again, like Curry yesterday, or Curry Thursday,
00:57:01you know, he finally has a really great game
00:57:04shooting the basketball, has 36 points in the game,
00:57:07first really good shooting game from the tournament,
00:57:09Wembley could have, because he's just got ridiculous range,
00:57:13and can dunk on anybody, he could easily have a big impact
00:57:17on the offensive end, in addition to all the stuff
00:57:20that he does defensively, where he just scares people
00:57:22from getting fast break layups, I mean,
00:57:23he's in everybody's head, you know, as a trail guy,
00:57:26whenever you're going down the floor,
00:57:28so, I do think, you know, the USA will win this game,
00:57:32but I'm not putting anything, it's only one game,
00:57:35it's only 40 minutes, not 48, like, it's,
00:57:38again, I don't know about you guys,
00:57:39but at a certain point, I'm like,
00:57:40does Team USA know this is only 40 minutes and not 48,
00:57:43there's not enough time to come back in this one,
00:57:45in the third quarter, fourth quarter,
00:57:47they're down double digits, I'm like,
00:57:48there's no way they're gonna do this,
00:57:50and then, you know, they magically,
00:57:52it was the Durant three, then the Booker three,
00:57:54consecutively, that really bailed them out,
00:57:57you know, whether that was a foul on Jokic or not,
00:57:59I thought it was, did Ant pull him down,
00:58:01I don't think so, or did Davis pull him down,
00:58:04I don't think so, I thought Jokic kind of ran him over,
00:58:07but that was the turning point of the game right there,
00:58:09you know, Durant hits that three,
00:58:10then Booker gets the three, six point swing,
00:58:13then, you know, then the rest is history.
00:58:15Yeah, the one thing that that French team has found
00:58:17is that guy, I can't tell if I'm pronouncing this correctly,
00:58:22but the Courtenay guy, who's like super fast,
00:58:25like he's been good for them recently,
00:58:26but even if you go back to their last game that they won,
00:58:29they only shot six of 27 from three,
00:58:32and look, their defense has been much better without,
00:58:34somehow without going with the defensive player of the year
00:58:37in the NBA, but we'll see, man, like it would be,
00:58:40and I think the one way that they can sort of stay,
00:58:43like I, and this is gonna sound cliche,
00:58:45but I think the start is so important for them,
00:58:48because the US is putting out a defensive unit
00:58:50that's not good, like it's not a good defensive group,
00:58:53they turned it on and they played better
00:58:55late against Serbia, but that's, I talked about it earlier,
00:58:58the defensive personnel is not great
00:59:00in their starting lineup,
00:59:01Serbia got out to the lead against that group,
00:59:03like Curry was the story of the first,
00:59:05like 14 of the first 15 points,
00:59:06but it's like, oh wait, they're down,
00:59:08because Serbia was generating all these good shots,
00:59:11so I think it's gonna come down to,
00:59:12hey, can France get up on that starting unit?
00:59:14Because if they can, I mean,
00:59:15then they're gonna have the crowd behind them.
00:59:18I kind of hope it works out that way,
00:59:19I mean, obviously I want the US to win,
00:59:21but I would like it to be like,
00:59:23that game, like just from a pure basketball perspective,
00:59:26that game was awesome,
00:59:27like the Serbia-US game was so much fun, I thought,
00:59:30I mean, Jokic was unreal
00:59:31with some of the passes he was making.
00:59:33Yeah, I'm with you, again,
00:59:35not to sound un-American or whatever,
00:59:38I want Team USA to win, but give us a game,
00:59:42give us something fun, it's a gold medal game,
00:59:44and I don't think any of the three of us,
00:59:46or probably most people listening are gonna lose any sleep
00:59:48if France does actually win this thing,
00:59:50not that I see it happening,
00:59:51but give us something competitive,
00:59:53I think that would be fun.
00:59:54But yeah, I do wonder, you know,
00:59:57if I'm betting the thing, because I probably am,
00:59:59I do wonder if what happened with Team USA against Serbia
01:00:05is a, not to be cliche, but a wake-up call
01:00:08to where US does come in and blow doors,
01:00:11or if that is an indication that this team
01:00:13is not exactly maybe what we thought it was
01:00:16earlier in the tournament,
01:00:17and France is gonna find a way to keep this thing close
01:00:19and make it competitive, you know,
01:00:21and therefore you bet the plus 16.
01:00:23I don't know, just something to think about, obviously,
01:00:25and to each their own,
01:00:26in terms of how you wanna handicap this thing.
01:00:28But Tatum, at least around here, is the biggest story,
01:00:32and Brown before that, and you know, what's still to come
01:00:35here as we sit in almost mid-August, which is kinda crazy,
01:00:39so September right around the corner,
01:00:42camp and preseason and regular season's
01:00:45all rapidly approaching.
01:00:47I mean, there is basketball on the way
01:00:49for the Boston Celtics, not just a, you know,
01:00:52trio of Boston Celtics that are busy there in France.
01:00:55But Barrett, thanks so much for hopping on, man.
01:00:58We appreciate it.
01:00:59Make sure, obviously, you check out
01:01:00the Off the Pike Ringer podcast that Barrett hosts.
01:01:04You can get Brian on Twitter, it's Brian Barrett.
01:01:06He just put out a show with Tom Caron of Nessun
01:01:08talking about the Red Sox, who are fun again,
01:01:12and we'll see what they can do against the Astros.
01:01:14Just, again, betting, bet the over.
01:01:17Expect runs in that one, and pretty much every game,
01:01:19because that has been the trend for these Sox
01:01:21throughout the year.
01:01:22They can hit, they can't pitch, and those things
01:01:24oftentimes go together and lead to a lot of scoring.
01:01:28But it's a wild card chase, a lot of fun,
01:01:29and maybe, just maybe, as we get closer and closer to that,
01:01:33we'll sprinkle in a thought of that as well.
01:01:34But it is primarily a basketball podcast,
01:01:38so we don't bother.
01:01:39But Barrett, like I said, thanks for hopping on.
01:01:41Nev, always a pleasure.
01:01:44Thanks for having me, fellas.
01:01:45It's Celtics Beat.
01:01:46We'll see you again next time.
