Patrick Mouratoglou believes that Andy Murray was the ultimate champion in terms of his mindset, with his resilience and determination to carry on his greatest traits.

Mouratoglou explains that, although the end of Murray’s career was ruined by injury, his resolve to come back and continue playing is as big an achievement in itself as the titles he won.

Despite playing in an unprecedented era of greatness, Murray was able to assert himself as one of the leading players of his generation. But, ultimately, Mouratoglou believes it is Murray’s resilience that he will be remembered for.

“If I have one word to describe him, it is resilience… It is what will stay when we talk about him, think about him,” Mouratoglou said.

“I don’t know if people understood or not that he wanted to be back at the top of Grand Slams.

“He really deeply believed, that is also one of his trademarks.”

00:00He was grinding, giving a hundred percent,
00:02fighting every single point of every single match.
00:04Nothing could stop him.
00:09I think what Andy Murray showed the most is mental qualities.
00:14And I would say values.
00:15He's one of the ultimate champions in terms of mindset.
00:18When he has become number one in the world,
00:20he fought so hard.
00:22He was playing every single week,
00:24having incredible matches.
00:26He was completely exhausted, but he was so resilient.
00:28He never gave up until he got what he wanted.
00:31That looked like crazy from outside.
00:32I mean, to my point of view, he was too much.
00:35I thought, wow, how is he going to recover from that?
00:37The injuries that, in a way, destroyed the end of his career
00:41and that he will carry forever
00:42because he had huge surgeries
00:44are the consequence of the fact
00:46that he really passed the limit of what a human can do,
00:50which is incredibly beautiful in terms of sports values.
00:53If I have one word to describe him,
00:55I would say resilience.
00:56In sports and in life, actually,
00:58this is one of the most important qualities.
01:00It is what will stay when we will talk about him,
01:03think about him, of course, his achievements,
01:05the three Grand Slams he won,
01:06the number one in the world ranking,
01:09the two Olympic gold medals on grass in Wimbledon.
01:11In a way, he achieved all his dreams,
01:14playing at the same time as the three giants,
01:17Novak, Rafa, Roger, which is something incredible
01:20because only two guys during that whole period
01:22were able to win three Grand Slams,
01:23him and Stan Wawrinka.
01:25Even towards the end,
01:26and that's probably the reason why he couldn't give up,
01:30even though clearly he was struggling
01:32and the chances to do well in a Grand Slam
01:34were decreasing year after year,
01:36but he just couldn't give up.
01:38I don't know if people understood or not
01:39that he wanted to be back at the top of the Grand Slams,
01:41but that's what he wanted.
01:42If he had thought my best would be a second
01:45or a third one in a Grand Slam,
01:46he wouldn't be interested,
01:47but he really deeply believed,
01:48and that's also one of his trademark,
01:50he believed in him deeply,
01:51he deeply believed he could make it
01:53and until he would reach it,
01:55he would not give up,
01:56he would give everything,
01:57whatever tough experience he would go through
02:01because he went through crazy pain,
02:02physical pain because of his surgeries,
02:04then multiple other physical problems,
02:07a lot of disappointments with early exits
02:10in many tournaments,
02:11matches he could have won,
02:12but nothing could stop him.
02:14He was constantly back on court every day,
02:17grinding, giving 100%,
02:19fighting every single point of every single match.
02:21Again, that's his trademark.
