00:00:00At halftime, Texas Stadium, it's the Dallas Cowboys, 23, and the Detroit Lions, nothing.
00:00:07Paul Horning, Tommy Hudspeth of the Detroit Lions, worked all week, of course, with new
00:00:10little wrinkles he hoped would compensate for the fact that the offensive line hasn't
00:00:14been that effective.
00:00:15But if you turn that ball over and don't get it all that much, it doesn't really matter
00:00:18that much.
00:00:19I'll tell you, they're really in a...
00:00:20They've got a terrible problem, no question about that, Lens.
00:00:23They've only got two first downs, 38 yards in total offense.
00:00:26Of course, Dallas is a lot better football team than Detroit, we can easily see this,
00:00:30but I can't understand, Lens, you know, we saw Detroit play earlier in the season, they
00:00:34were a much better football team, and they have just...
00:00:37It seems as if when they go on the road, they're in trouble.
00:00:40Well, that's true, because of their last 10 times on the road, they've run one only one
00:00:43ball game, they've lost six in a row on the road, and when you play the Dallas Cowboys,
00:00:48you might look worse than you are, though, because they do so many things so well.
00:00:51Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head.
00:00:52If you start turning the football over and making mistakes against this team, they'll
00:00:55stuff it right down your throat.
00:00:57They've got the killer instinct, and that is very unusual for a great football team,
00:01:01Lens.
00:01:02Usually, you'll see teams in the National Football League, when they get three touchdowns
00:01:04on top, they go into a shell and play very conservative.
00:01:08Not this football team, they'll come right back at you, try to put some more points on
00:01:10the board.
00:01:11Tony Dorsett, acquired, of course, out of the University of Pittsburgh by the Dallas
00:01:15Cowboys, has added really a new dimension to their attack.
00:01:17And I would call it excitement.
00:01:20He hasn't really rushed the football that effectively here in the first half.
00:01:23I think he's, well, let's see, only got three yards total and six or seven carries.
00:01:28But we saw at the end of the first half what he can do.
00:01:32He can catch a little swing pass, break, make the big play, got out of bounds very, I thought,
00:01:37did a good job getting out of bounds, stopping the clock, and he's going to make the big
00:01:40play for Dallas in the years to come.
00:01:42So the Dallas Cowboys are leading by a score of 23 to nothing at the end of the first half
00:01:46here at Texas Stadium.
00:01:51The NFL today on CBS will return after this word from your local station.
00:01:57Joyce risks her career by trying to keep Police Chief Fletcher from being eliminated from
00:02:01her TV series on The Betty White Show tomorrow on CBS.
00:02:22You're welcome.
00:02:24You're welcome to do this to us.
00:02:27We're not proud.
00:02:28Thank you.
00:02:29Uh, no, I'll get it.
00:02:31May I?
00:02:32Please.
00:02:33Da-da-da-da-da.
00:02:48What kind of car is that?
00:02:49What kind of car is that?
00:02:50Is that an old Buick down there, Lindsey?
00:02:52Is that a Buick or old Buick or, uh...
00:02:55Looks like it, doesn't it?
00:02:57Looks like an old Buick.
00:02:58Yeah, it does.
00:02:59It might be an old one, Bill.
00:03:00Looks like a Buick.
00:03:01It really does.
00:03:11All right, Irv, let's take a look at some highlights now and you get us started.
00:03:14Okay, I'll start it.
00:03:15It's been a defensive day around the National Football League and the Atlanta Falcons and
00:03:18Minnesota Vikings late in the fourth quarter in a head-to-head battle where the score is
00:03:2314-7, Minnesota.
00:03:24But this is early action in the first quarter and Fran Tarkin goes to the air and Ronan
00:03:28Lawrence picks the ball up.
00:03:30We all know, Brent, that defensive backs are the best athletes in the National Football
00:03:33League.
00:03:34He brings the ball back to the 49-yard line, setting up a scoring opportunity for Scott
00:03:37Hunter and his offensive teammates.
00:03:39And Greg McCreary, a backup tight end substituting for Jim Mitchell, takes the pass in.
00:03:45Atlanta led 7-0, but Fran Tarkin comes right back with the next offensive series by the
00:03:49Vikings.
00:03:50Hits Sammy White, 55-yard touchdown pass.
00:03:52It's all tied, 7-7.
00:03:54In the third quarter, the biggest play of the game.
00:03:56Chuck Foreman going 51 yards all the way down to the Atlanta one-yard line.
00:04:00But don't go away, folks.
00:04:02He takes the Vikings three plays before they can finally get it in.
00:04:04And from the six-yard line, third and goal, Fran Tarkin goes to Bob Tucker, who's recently
00:04:09acquired from the New York Giants.
00:04:12And he brings it in, and Minnesota takes a 14-7 lead, and it's late in the fourth quarter,
00:04:16and his score still holds at that point.
00:04:18And Irv Bartkowski now is in quarterback in the Atlanta Falcons in that game, trying to
00:04:22pull it out.
00:04:23Philadelphia and Washington.
00:04:24The story there, of course, is the fact that Joe Theismann started at quarterback.
00:04:28And early, the Eagles gave him an opportunity to show what he could do as Smith coughed
00:04:33it up on the end of the round at a Redskins jump on it.
00:04:36Watch now.
00:04:37Theismann wants his tight end, Gene Fugate.
00:04:39A combination that will burn the Eagles a couple of times.
00:04:42From the left side, he sends him.
00:04:45Simple post-pattern six points.
00:04:48A little bit later, Theismann back with his offense.
00:04:51This time, he'll go to an outside man, Danny Buggs.
00:04:56Down at the 15-yard line.
00:04:58And again, it will be Fugate.
00:04:59This time, from the right side, he runs.
00:05:02Same pattern, different side of the field.
00:05:04Eagles come back.
00:05:06Betterson runs it in for the touchdown.
00:05:11But the Redskins are still in command in that football game.
00:05:14The Eagles scored again late in that game.
00:05:16Britain, the score is 23-17.
00:05:18Harold Carmichael pulled in a Ron Jaworski touchdown pass.
00:05:20But with Green Bay and Chicago in the third quarter, Chicago has a 16-0 commanding lead.
00:05:25And Walter Payton is the story.
00:05:27When you have the best running back in football, what do you do?
00:05:29Give him the ball.
00:05:30Down to the 5-yard line.
00:05:31Setting up a touchdown run by Johnny Musso.
00:05:34And Chicago took a 6-0 lead.
00:05:36Missed the extra point.
00:05:37Walter Payton, number 34, goes in again.
00:05:39This time from the 6, 13-0.
00:05:41And Chicago right now has a 16-0 lead.
00:05:47All right, Irv.
00:05:48We've got the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions.
00:05:50The Cowboys, the only unbeaten team in the NFC.
00:05:53And unless Detroit can get its act together in the second half,
00:05:56they will stay that way halfway through the season.
00:05:59Pereira's field goal from the 45-yard line made it 6-0 in favor of the Cowboys.
00:06:04Young Mark Washington steps in to intercept this pass by Landry.
00:06:08And watch the return they get.
00:06:10They yell, fire on that defensive unit, Irv Cross.
00:06:12You defensive backs, you know how to do it.
00:06:14Now Billy Joe Dupree catches the 15-yard touchdown pass from Staubach.
00:06:19Gets into the end zone, and it became 13-0.
00:06:22Detroit made only two first downs in the first half.
00:06:26And I think that's more a tribute to that Cowboy defensive unit
00:06:29because Landry gets some first downs.
00:06:31There's Hagman with an interception.
00:06:33And from there was Scott Laidlaw as the Cowboys marched it in.
00:06:37And, of course, at the half, they lead 23-0 as they got down to kick still another field goal.
00:06:43Look at the blocking wall that forms there for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:06:46They know how to do it, and they've got great athletes in that franchise.
00:06:49Now the Los Angeles Rams and the New Orleans Saints,
00:06:52and it has been a wild, wild game down in the Superdome.
00:06:55Rams always have trouble down there.
00:06:57Hayden yanks back. He wants Harold Jackson.
00:07:00And watch him as he moves to the left, that agility.
00:07:03After the extra point, it was 7-0.
00:07:05Strachan has replaced Muncie, who is in Strachan's doghouse.
00:07:08And on a key fourth down, he got it down to the Ram three-yard line
00:07:11and gave up his jersey in the process.
00:07:13Galbraith took it from there, went for the touchdown,
00:07:16and New Orleans led it by 3-10-7.
00:07:18Now for the right side.
00:07:20Watch Chuck Criss come on the blitz.
00:07:22And that causes L.A. to kick a field goal.
00:07:24It tied it.
00:07:26Now the Saints, punting.
00:07:28And Waddy, who has got blazing speed,
00:07:31unfortunately is going to cough it up.
00:07:34I say unfortunately for the Rams and their fans.
00:07:37Surrounded, and the Saints have got a chance.
00:07:40They set up a field goal. The big play this year is the fake.
00:07:43Defensive end Grooms goes out.
00:07:45He's an eligible receiver. He lined up as a tight end.
00:07:4717-10. Rams come back.
00:07:49Was this a touchdown or wasn't it?
00:07:51Haven for the corner. Jackson tightrope walking.
00:07:53Both feet inbounds. Perfect call.
00:07:56Look at how he came right down for that touchdown.
00:07:58All right, now let's go back to Lindsey Nelson and Paul Horning.
00:08:01Lindsey?
00:08:04At halftime here at Texas Stadium, the Dallas Cowboys 23,
00:08:07the Detroit Lions nothing.
00:08:09And now we'll check scores of other games around the National Football League.
00:08:12It's Minnesota. Two touchdown passes.
00:08:14Fran Tarkin in over Atlanta, fourth quarter.
00:08:1814-7, Washington. Philadelphia's coming back.
00:08:21Jaworski, a touchdown pass.
00:08:23It's Washington 23, Philadelphia 17, fourth quarter.
00:08:27And we've got a defensive battle going on.
00:08:29Cincinnati 10, Houston 3.
00:08:33Oh, what a route. Cleveland, boy, I tell you.
00:08:36I guess Lindsey's probably the biggest surprise in the NFL.
00:08:39What a tough season they've had as far as opponents are concerned.
00:08:4330-0 on top of the Chiefs. Complete route.
00:08:46New England coming back.
00:08:48They trailed early in that ballgame, 24-13 over the New York Jets.
00:08:53And Miami in a tight struggle, fourth quarter, 13-7.
00:08:58I think they missed an extra point in there.
00:09:00And Chicago shutting out Green Bay, 16-0.
00:09:03Johnny Musil scored once. Walter Payton scored once.
00:09:06And they had a field goal from Bob Thomas.
00:09:09And Los Angeles at halftime has taken a three-point lead over New Orleans.
00:09:14Los Angeles was ahead in that ballgame all the way.
00:09:17The Rams now controlling the three-point lead.
00:09:20Those scores of other games around the National Football League.
00:09:24With the Cowboys leading the Lions 23-0 here at Texas Stadium.
00:09:28Cowboys, of course, the only undefeated team in the National Football Conference.
00:09:38And they are, of course, well on their way to the finest start they've ever had.
00:09:43It'll be the best start the Dallas Cowboys have ever had.
00:09:49Mr. Highboom.
00:09:50Huh?
00:09:51Mr. Highboom.
00:09:52Yes?
00:09:53We understand that you're taking a trip with us tomorrow.
00:09:55Trip?
00:09:56Yeah, well, we want you to know that Avis is working right now.
00:09:58Avis?
00:09:59Just vacuuming your car, checking the oil, brakes, even the air in the spare tire.
00:10:02Spare tire.
00:10:03One of the ways Avis tries harder is working at night, so you're ready in the morning.
00:10:06Harder?
00:10:07Oh, by the way, it's a Chrysler Cordova, and it's blue.
00:10:09See you in the morning.
00:10:10See you in the morning.
00:10:12We try harder, Avis.
00:10:14Avis, we don't go another way.
00:10:19America, you've been changing.
00:10:21Coming, going, changing, growing.
00:10:23The things that make up life.
00:10:25Why is BankAmericard becoming Visa?
00:10:27To keep up with you.
00:10:29You're traveling, you're moving, you're taking more from life.

00:10:45Visa, we're keeping up with you.
00:10:53Part of the new winning image for the Detroit Lions is our new stadium, the Silver Dome.
00:10:58Hello, I'm Greg Landry, and I'd like to show you where I live and work.
00:11:03Detroit is known as the Motor City,
00:11:05and of course, we're proud of the many automobiles we make here.
00:11:09But here are some other cars we're proud of.
00:11:11Old trolley cars that have been restored back to public service.
00:11:15They're a part of Detroit's rebuilding.
00:11:17We're also proud of Renaissance Center, which is almost a brand new city within a city.
00:11:22We've still got a lot of work to do, but these people will help.
00:11:26They're neighbors and fans who work for our united way.
00:11:30For family counseling and mental health services,
00:11:33for the medical center and many other agencies funded by United Way.
00:11:37They take pride in the Lions, our town, and our United Way.
00:11:42For all these volunteers, we'd like to say thanks to you.
00:11:46It works for all of us, the United Way.
00:11:51Bob Lilly is on the field now for the induction ceremony
00:11:54of former linebacker Chuck Colley into the Dallas Ring of Honor.
00:11:58Don Meredith, Bob Lilly, Don Perkins are the only other members.
00:12:01They are all here. Here's Lilly.
00:12:03He wasn't all pro for six years during his 13-year career.
00:12:10He was a pro bowler six years.
00:12:13He went to college in West Virginia.
00:12:17He was a five-sport letterman four years in a row.
00:12:22He was drafted by the Chicago Bears number one in 1958.
00:12:30He was my original teammate back in 1961.
00:12:36And as I said, he was here 13 years.
00:12:41He is a great friend of mine.
00:12:43He's a friend of the Cowboys.
00:12:46And I know he appreciates all the fans and all the people who chose him.
00:12:51Without further ado, Chuck Colley.
00:12:55Boy, let's see what a great linebacker he was.
00:12:58Quick, smart.
00:13:02The entire Cowboy team is gathered there in two lines at midfield
00:13:05to witness this induction ceremony of former linebacker Chuck Colley
00:13:10into the Ring of Honor.
00:13:13I'm glad to start the rain.
00:13:16I only know of one way to show my appreciation.
00:13:20It's rather simple.
00:13:22I thank the Cowboy organization for inducting me into the Ring of Honor.
00:13:28I thank very deeply the coaches who put up with me for 13 years
00:13:33and made me the professional that I was.
00:13:37I thank my fellow players who are sitting in the stands today
00:13:41and are still the ones who are still out here playing today.
00:13:45And the fans that gave me the encouragement and the urge
00:13:49to make the big plays, because I got this from you people, too.
00:13:54Lastly, I've got to show a great deal of admiration to my wife, Nancy,
00:14:01my son, Scott, and my daughter, Robin,
00:14:04because it's pretty tough to put up with a professional athlete
00:14:08for 13 years getting ready for each game.
00:14:11Thank you, one and all.
00:14:13Chuck Colley.
00:14:15Thank you, one and all.
00:14:17Chuck Colley.
00:14:19Tech Schramm moving up there to shake his hand.
00:14:22And you can see the name Chuck Colley on the blue ring,
00:14:25which separates the upper and lower levels on the press box side.
00:14:28And there is the blue jacket, Bob Lilly fitting it on him,
00:14:31and Tech Schramm there.
00:14:34Chuck, I want to present you with this specially designed replica
00:14:41of the Ring of Honor,
00:14:43which has now your name along with Bob's, Don's, Don's.
00:14:48Hope you keep it the rest of your life.
00:14:56Thank you very much, Tech.
00:14:58And again, my sincere appreciation to the fine organization,
00:15:02the Cowboys, who have brought forth since 1960.
00:15:09Frank Lieber is emceeing this ceremony.
00:15:13Next, the only head coach that Chuck Colley ever had
00:15:18from 1961 to 1973 with the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Landry.
00:15:31Standing ovation for Tom Landry.
00:15:38It's a real privilege for me to have the opportunity
00:15:40to speak for the coaches and the president team
00:15:42and also congratulating Chuck Colley for this honor.
00:15:46I don't know of anyone that's more deserving than Chuck Colley.
00:15:49Not only was he a great pro, he's a great team man,
00:15:52but more important than that, he was a great person.
00:15:55And he did probably as much as anybody
00:15:57in helping Dallas build a franchise.
00:15:59So my congratulations to Chuck and his family today.
00:16:02Thank you.
00:16:06Tom Landry, the head coach.
00:16:08Chuck Colley getting congratulations all around.
00:16:13As he becomes the fourth man to be inducted into the Ring of Honor.
00:16:16The others are right there.
00:16:17Don Meredith, Don Perkins, Bob Lilly, and Chuck Howley.
00:16:25Four pretty good athletes right there, I'll tell you.
00:16:28Chuck Alley, Linz, I think, was the only guy in the history
00:16:31of the Super Bowl to win the most valuable player
00:16:33in the losing cause.
00:16:35That was in Super Bowl V.
00:16:38So there are the Dallas Cowboy Immortals
00:16:41who have been inducted so far into the Ring of Honor.
00:16:44Here at Texas Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
00:16:48Dallas Cowboy Halftime Entertainment is produced and directed by...
00:16:52And now he will be taken around the track in the automobile
00:16:57so that the fans can be a little closer to their hero, Chuck Colley.
00:17:01This is a part of the induction ceremony.
00:17:04He played his college football at the University of West Virginia.
00:17:15Beautiful antique car.
00:17:17Looks like one of the several cars Paul Horning had at Notre Dame.
00:17:20Several.
00:17:24The only car I had with my thumb.
00:17:26Paul Horning's car.
00:17:28Several.
00:17:31The only car I had with my thumb.
00:17:35Oh, Chuck Alley.
00:17:37I had to block him a lot, Lindsey, and he was difficult.
00:17:44Thirteen years, sterling performance.
00:17:48Brought his happy day for him.
00:17:50It's a very nice gesture, the Detroit Lions shaking hands
00:17:53with him on the sidelines, too.
00:17:59West Virginia!
00:18:03All right.
00:18:05A contingent of the Detroit Lions has come back onto the field
00:18:08just in time to run into the middle of this ceremony.
00:18:10I don't think they planned it that way.
00:18:12I tell you, I think this is a great tradition
00:18:14that the Dallas Cowboy organization has started.
00:18:17As you can see, the fan interest and the reception
00:18:21has just been just great.
00:18:23It goes a long way in public relations.
00:18:26Just another example, Lindsey, I guess,
00:18:29of the great organization of the Cowboys.
00:18:31This tradition will go on for years and years.
00:18:34They're to be congratulated for it.
00:18:45Chuck Alley.
00:18:47Number 54.
00:18:49The number that Randy White wears just now.
00:18:56There was a newspaper cartoon in Dallas this morning
00:18:59showing Tom Landry being approached by a fellow
00:19:03who wanted to take the jersey of Chuck Alley.
00:19:07Landry said to him, you take it,
00:19:09indicating it's worn by Randy White,
00:19:12who is 6'4", 245 pounds,
00:19:14and thinking it wouldn't be all that easy.
00:19:17I tell you one thing,
00:19:19Randy White's doing the jersey justice, too.
00:19:23Chuck Alley now leaves the field from the tunnel,
00:19:28and these induction ceremonies have been completed.
00:19:32Two teams are coming back onto the field
00:19:34for the resumption of play here at Texas Stadium
00:19:37for the Dallas Cowboys leading the Detroit Lions
00:19:39by a score of 23 to nothing.
00:19:53Detroit Lions will kick off.
00:19:55Here's some stats, halftime stats.
00:19:57I think it tells the whole story.
00:19:59First down is Detroit 2, Dallas 11.
00:20:02Yards rushing.
00:20:04Detroit only 25 yards.
00:20:06Yards passing.
00:20:08Only 13 yards passing for Detroit.
00:20:14Dallas over 200 yards in offense.
00:20:18Dallas over 200 yards in offense.
00:20:23Steve McImyer will kick it off for the Detroit Lions.
00:20:26Butch Johnson has dropped back with Larry Brinson to receive it.
00:20:29Brinson at the bottom of your screen.
00:20:32Here comes McImyer.
00:20:35Brinson.
00:20:37Three yards deep in the end zone.
00:20:38Will not run it out.
00:20:39Touchback.
00:20:40First and 10 at the 20-yard line for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:20:44Well, Detroit's got to not only hope for a miracle,
00:20:47they've got to hope for some turnovers.
00:20:49They've got to recover maybe a fumble or two
00:20:52or hope for an interception
00:20:54to give this team a little bit of momentum
00:20:56and get some points on the board.
00:20:58This is not as bad a team,
00:21:01and I repeat that as they're playing today.
00:21:04Detroit's a much better football team,
00:21:06but they don't play like it on the road.
00:21:09Roger Staubach, the quarterback, brings him up.
00:21:11Tony Dorsett and Robert Newhouse are the setbacks,
00:21:13and that's Dorsett going into the tailback in the I formation.
00:21:19Newhouse, he is stood up by Herb Orvis.
00:21:25Look at Orvis.
00:21:27He's having a little fun.
00:21:28He pats him on the back.
00:21:30Newhouse blasts with him.
00:21:35I tell you one thing.
00:21:36You can't lose your sense of humor
00:21:37when something like this is going on.
00:21:40No gain on the play.
00:21:41Second and ten.
00:21:42The ball is spotted back up at the 20-yard line.
00:21:52John Staubach brings him up.
00:21:57Dorsett, the tailback.
00:22:00He has it.
00:22:02Picked up three to the 23.
00:22:03That'll make it third down and seven yards to go
00:22:05for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:22:07Doug English made the stop.
00:22:11Let's pick up some blocking.
00:22:16That's 78.
00:22:17Doug English at the center of John Fitzgerald,
00:22:20moving him over to the right side,
00:22:22although he did have responsibility on that side.
00:22:25English got back to trip him up.
00:22:28It's at the 23-yard line.
00:22:29Third down and seven to go.
00:22:31Preston Pearson.
00:22:34And they're at the running back now.
00:22:36Third shot.
00:22:37Third shot.
00:22:38They love to go to the backs on this little hook pattern.
00:22:41There it is.
00:22:42Preston Pearson, first and ten at the 34-yard line.
00:22:45I tell you, third and seven.
00:22:48Preston Pearson caught 21 passes coming into this.
00:22:52Now watch him.
00:22:53He's on the left side of your screen.
00:22:54He'll work on the linebacker and just hook up.
00:22:57Third and seven.
00:22:58And Pearson knows he's got the first down.
00:23:00He's about nine yards downfield.
00:23:03In between the linebackers, Ed O'Neill, Charlie Weaver.
00:23:07Joe Dupree, number 89, just sticking his head into the huddle.
00:23:14Dorsett's back in there with Newhouse.
00:23:17Dorsett to the 40-yard line.
00:23:21Picked up six on the play to make it second down
00:23:23and four yards to go.
00:23:24Charlie Weaver made the stop.
00:23:31Minnesota, seven-point win and a big win for the Vikings
00:23:33over the Atlanta Falcons, 14-7.
00:23:37Starting the day, Minnesota had a one-game lead
00:23:39over the Detroit Lions in the central division,
00:23:41so the Minnesotas have won their game.
00:23:43Second down, four yards to go for the Dallas Cowboys
00:23:46who lead here 23-0 in the third quarter.
00:23:54Quick pitch.
00:23:56Dorsett to the 42.
00:23:59Herb Orvis made the stop.
00:24:08Another final.
00:24:09New England held on to beat the New York Jets by 11, 24-13.
00:24:16That team is going to be in the playoff, Lindsay.
00:24:19Got a lot of fireworks in that ball club, Russ Francis, Steve Grogan.
00:24:24Good defense.
00:24:27Third down, two yards to go.
00:24:41Solid.
00:24:43He is out of bounds with the first down at the 47-yard line.
00:24:52Dorsett.
00:24:53Fumble.
00:24:56Just picked up out of bounds.
00:24:58Jim Cooper.
00:25:00Jim Cooper dribbled it.
00:25:02It's going to be brought back and spotted at the 47-yard line.
00:25:09Let me explain something here.
00:25:11Ten years ago, that would have been a fumble in the National Football League,
00:25:14but the way they decipher the rules now,
00:25:16as soon as you go down and you hit the turf, they blow the whistle.
00:25:20The play is dead.
00:25:22In other words, the turf or the grass or whatever they're playing on
00:25:26does not cause the fumble anymore.
00:25:28Years ago, if you hit the ground and you fumbled, it would have been a fumble.
00:25:31Today, it's dead.
00:25:33Second down, five yards to go at the 47.
00:25:40Newhouse cut off at the pass at the 49.
00:25:45Sanders is there.
00:25:52Sanders has eight sacks on the year.
00:25:54Of course, that indicates good defensive play.
00:26:00Another final.
00:26:02San Diego and a squeaker over the Dolphins, 14-13.
00:26:06It seems to me San Diego has a lot of squeakers.
00:26:08They win some and they lose some.
00:26:12Third down and nine yards to go.
00:26:14That improves San Diego's record of four and three.
00:26:17They've got to catch Denver and Oakland in that conference, though.
00:26:20Preston Pearson, the tailback.
00:26:24Roger Staubach, the shotgun.
00:26:29First to attempt the 38-yard line.
00:26:32Lamborne on the stop.
00:26:34That's Staubach all the time in the world.
00:26:36Oh, they protect for this guy.
00:26:38Don't they, Lance?
00:26:39Look at the four-man rush.
00:26:40No blitz, but he's got time.
00:26:4213 yards deep, steps up.
00:26:44Dupre's open over the middle.
00:26:45First down, Cowboys.
00:26:47That's exactly the way you draw it up on the board.
00:26:53Two, Pearson goes out to a wide left.
00:26:55Gould and Richards double on the same side.
00:26:59Newhouse and Dorsett are the tailbacks.
00:27:01Dorsett into the tailback.
00:27:04Dorsett.
00:27:05Dorsett.
00:27:06Dorsett.
00:27:08To the 20-yard line.
00:27:10Nice contact.
00:27:14That is why he's one of the highest-paid rookies in history.
00:27:1717 yards.
00:27:19Watch this.
00:27:21He shows you a little maneuverability this time, Lindsey.
00:27:23Right here, he ducks underneath the tackler.
00:27:25Then he finds his hole.
00:27:26He outruns Dick Juran right there.
00:27:29Cuts to the outside and almost broke it.
00:27:32Ed O'Neill on the stop.
00:27:34Found it on the 21-yard line.
00:27:41We're going to get him some yards here in the second half.
00:27:46Newhouse.
00:27:49Fouled up short of the 20.
00:27:56Third period score, Los Angeles and New Orleans.
00:27:59And New Orleans is, boy, that's a seesaw battle, Lindsey.
00:28:02The Saints fighting back at home, 24 to 20.
00:28:07And about a foot or two on it last play.
00:28:12Larry Hand.
00:28:14Ernie Price on the tackle.
00:28:21Newhouse and Dorsett.
00:28:24Golden-Richards in motion across.
00:28:27Now back to Dorsett.
00:28:32To the 18-yard line.
00:28:34Laslevic made the tackle.
00:28:37Good.
00:28:44Boy, they're methodical, aren't they, Lindsey?
00:28:46Just boom.
00:28:48Don't make too many mistakes.
00:28:50A precision football team, the Dallas Cowboys.
00:28:53They're down in seven yards to go.
00:28:54They have it at the 18-yard line of the Detroit Lions.
00:28:58Gray and Drew Pearson are out to the left side.
00:29:02Rich Johnson to the right side.
00:29:03Shotgun with Staubach deep.
00:29:06Staubach.
00:29:10Dorsett at the 10-yard line.
00:29:15He wants to take a long look at the first down yard.
00:29:17He may have made it by about six inches.
00:29:24Here he comes, Tony Dorsett.
00:29:26Good pass by Staubach.
00:29:27He's picking him apart.
00:29:2814 out of 23 now.
00:29:30Complete first down.
00:29:34That's Lamborne right there, number 20.
00:29:40Final, the Cincinnati Bengals win their third game of the year.
00:29:43Over the other, 13 to 10.
00:29:46Ball is spotted squarely on the 10,
00:29:48which makes it first down and goal to go at the 10-yard line.
00:29:5219, 10, 9, 10.
00:29:57Reverse, reverse.
00:29:59Dupree, tight end reverse.
00:30:05Paul Neumann was there, and he stopped outside the 10.
00:30:08Ed O'Neill had his big right paw out there.
00:30:10Almost was the face guarding penalty.
00:30:13Face mask.
00:30:16Dorsett at the 11, where it is second down and goal to go.
00:30:23That is, of course, Tom Landry on the phone.
00:30:26Jim Myers, the assistant head coach.
00:30:36Sally's in there as Dupree has come out.
00:30:43Dupree.
00:30:48Oh, a nine-yard blast right off the right side,
00:30:52and you can see the quickness.
00:30:53Here, explodes past the line of scrimmage.
00:30:57He got a pretty good block by Newhouse.
00:30:59He cut to the inside.
00:31:01Reggie Pickney on the stop.
00:31:04It'll be third down and goal to go just outside the one-yard line now.
00:31:07Dallas Cowboys are leading 23 to nothing.
00:31:09We have five minutes, 15 seconds left to play in the third quarter,
00:31:12and the Cowboys are driving.
00:31:17It's getting to be a habit today.
00:31:22Dorsett and Newhouse.
00:31:27Stavok rolls and puts it up.
00:31:29Salty has it for the touchdown.
00:31:31Jay Salty took it for the touchdown, and he strikes it.
00:31:35All right, his first touchdown.
00:31:38Jay Salty, wide open.
00:31:41Oh, and Stolbach, as I said, he'll pick you apart.
00:31:45Detroit was offsides on the play.
00:31:47It has, of course, been declined in the touchdown stats.
00:31:53Oh, offensively and defensively, no mistakes today.
00:31:57A little fake to Newhouse over the middle.
00:31:59Stolbach just lobbed a little basketball pass touchdown.
00:32:05First half coming now, and Charlie Waters is in the hole for a friend, Herrera.
00:32:12Waters puts it down.
00:32:14Herrera boots it up, and it's good.
00:32:17So, the Dallas Cowboys have taken a 30 to nothing lead over the Detroit Lions.
00:32:22Four minutes, 54 seconds.
00:32:24He made it to be played in the third quarter.
00:32:28Introducing the Ford in your future, the new Ford Fairmont Wagon,
00:32:33designed for today and the years ahead.
00:32:35The Fairmont Wagon has excellent mileage ratings, but while it is trim and lean outside,
00:32:40Fairmont has almost 90% of the passenger space of most large wagons,
00:32:44and with a seat down, can swallow up all this cargo.
00:32:47Yet, for all this, the new Fairmont Wagon, as shown, is actually sticker priced less than this little VW Rabbit.
00:32:53Test drive Fairmont, the newest, better idea from the Wagon Master.
00:33:00This fresh egg is going to help us sell this brand new FreeFlex shoe from Freeman.
00:33:05Watch.
00:33:16You can do it with any new Freeman FreeFlex.
00:33:19Let's use the same egg.
00:33:22Turn around and talk a little about defense.
00:33:27Efren Herrera will kick off now for the Detroit Lions.
00:33:31That drive was 80 yards and 16 plays, and they kept the ball 10 minutes, 6 seconds.
00:33:40Rick Kaye in his center deep to receive the kickoff.
00:33:45Kaye moves over.
00:33:47Kaye in at the 10-yard line. He's at the 15, at the 20.
00:33:49Kaye in at the 25, and he was upended.
00:33:55Jay Salty made the tackle.
00:34:03Jay Salty, he made the tackle.
00:34:09Jay Salty, he made the tackle.
00:34:14The guy sitting next to me is probably one of the greatest defensive tackles ever to play in the game.
00:34:18Honored here again this afternoon, Bob Lilly.
00:34:21Bob, looks as if the Dallas Cowboys are, well, the Dallas Cowboys.
00:34:25Well, they sure are. They're a year ahead of last year, of course, with their experience.
00:34:30And, of course, the talent, I think, is beginning to show itself.
00:34:33They're really probably, in my opinion, the class of the NFC.
00:34:37And, you know, I think they lack a little bit of adhesion, or cohesion, I should say.
00:34:42They're good individually, but not a real good team yet.
00:34:45But their talent is so thick, and they've got so much depth, that it's pretty hard to beat them.
00:34:50You're trying to tell me they're all right, they're going to make it, aren't you?
00:34:53I think they're going to make it all right.
00:34:54You look pretty good, it looks like.
00:34:55Do you ever have any twinges about being back down there?
00:34:58No, I was just glad I didn't have to hit the ground.
00:35:00Maybe you had a bracken deck, or you could go down there and play with the boys.
00:35:04Let's take a look here.
00:35:05We've got an injury on the field. Who is that, Lance?
00:35:07That's Jay Salty, who made the tackle on the last play.
00:35:09Just stunned a little. He's apparently all right.
00:35:11Jay Salty made the tackle.
00:35:14Brick Can, who stumbled up to the 29 yard line.
00:35:17So they'll start at first and 10 at the 29.
00:35:19You know, Bob, there's always a worry, and of course, when you win them all,
00:35:23there's no question about you playing great football.
00:35:25But a lot of people say maybe a team reaches its peak a little bit too early.
00:35:29Now, they've said that about Dallas.
00:35:31They won 9 out of their first 10 last year, and then were a little bit flat in the playoffs.
00:35:35Do you think this could happen here?
00:35:37Well, I don't think so, Paul, because they're so talented individually,
00:35:41and they're now moving the players into the positions that they didn't do last year,
00:35:45and I think that they're going to just become better this year.
00:35:48Greg Landry, the quarterback, they came out in an I formation.
00:35:51Dexter Bussey on the tailback moved it from one yard to the 30 yard line.
00:35:55First time they've used the I formation today.
00:35:57They started out with a single setback, opened up the game with a slot left and a wing back,
00:36:02and they've come out in an I formation here in the third quarter with Landry back at quarterback.
00:36:08He was relieved by Joe Reed in the first half.
00:36:10They're trying to get somebody to move this football team, Lindsay,
00:36:13and when you're going bad, you've got to shift it around,
00:36:17try to get somebody in there to give them a little spark.
00:36:19Of course, that Dallas defense has a little say about that.
00:36:22Bussey in king of the setbacks for Landry.
00:36:25Bussey.
00:36:29At the 35 yard line, it'll be third down and four.
00:36:31It was Randy Hughes up to make the stop.
00:36:35You know, Paul, there again, there's an example, I think, of the cowboy depth.
00:36:38Randy Hughes was playing behind Cliff Harris and Charlie Waters.
00:36:42I think, obviously, he could probably make any other National Football League
00:36:45or American Football League team, but just a super-
00:36:49You know, one of the coaches last year told me, I'm not going to mention his name,
00:36:52but they said Randy Hughes is probably the best athlete on this team.
00:36:55Well, I've heard that, but, I mean, they've got so many good ones,
00:36:58it'd be hard to say that.
00:37:04Greg Landry rolling.
00:37:08And it's incomplete.
00:37:10Thomas Henderson on the pressure from the offside just made Landry worry.
00:37:16Look, he pats him on the head.
00:37:18Nothing you can do about it, pal.
00:37:20I'll tell you this defense.
00:37:22You know, I had to play against this guy sitting next to me, and he was quick.
00:37:27And this Randy White plays a lot like you, Bob.
00:37:30He's so quick, and he gets penetration.
00:37:33Well, I think that's the key.
00:37:35Anytime a defensive lineman can tie up two people,
00:37:38and really they've got two of them, Harvey Martin and Randy White,
00:37:42both can tie up two people, and they do that continually.
00:37:45You're noticing that the quarterback's beginning to shift to his right,
00:37:47and I think Ed Jones will come into his own
00:37:49because this is forcing the quarterback over there.
00:37:51You don't have to have the big arc.
00:37:53Wilbur Summers punted the ball out of bounds at the 25,
00:37:56and so the Detroit Lions give up the football.
00:37:59Dallas will start 1st and 10 at their own 25 on a 40-yard punt.
00:38:06Penalty marker on the play.
00:38:08So a little official administration to be taken care of here.
00:38:14Dallas is being consulted, so they're going to bring it back.
00:38:22Report from the Cowboy locker room is that Herbert Scott has a bruised thigh
00:38:26and will not return this afternoon.
00:38:28The Cowboys are leading by a score of 30 to nothing.
00:38:30You'll probably see Lindsey Burton Lawless, a three-year veteran from Florida.
00:38:34He's the backup guard, and he'll move in.
00:38:37Ineligible receiver downfield, number 42 offense. Fourth down.
00:38:43It's a violation of the kick coverage rule.
00:38:46Reggie Pinckney was downfield.
00:38:48Only the two outside men can go before the ball is good,
00:38:51so they'll kick it all over again.
00:38:53Wilbur Summers is back.
00:38:54Butch Johnson is deep to field the punt for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:39:03Summers puts it up.
00:39:05Again, toward the sideline.
00:39:07Fair catch signal goes up, but there'll be no run back.
00:39:09It's out of bounds.
00:39:10It is being lined up at the 37-yard line.
00:39:14So the Dallas Cowboys will start not at their 25,
00:39:17where it was before, but at the 37, first and 10.
00:39:32Sir.
00:39:33It's about time you were here.
00:39:34Another late night, I presume?
00:39:36Well, let's get started.
00:39:38The first thing we have for your assignment is this microcassette tape recorder.
00:39:42Genius. Did you design this, sir?
00:39:44Well, no.
00:39:45Actually, it's a Sony.
00:39:47Next is this radio with 32 worldwide bands.
00:39:50Can tune in just about any place.
00:39:52Extraordinary.
00:39:53Who gets the credit for this one?
00:39:55This is a Sony, too.
00:39:57You'll also need this ultra-compact portable video camera.
00:40:00And we're going to mount this 5-inch color TV in your car,
00:40:02along with this Betamax deck for playback.
00:40:05Remarkable. Are they, uh...
00:40:06Yes.
00:40:07They're Sony also.
00:40:09Excuse me, sir, but did you just walk into a store and buy these?
00:40:12Well, uh...
00:40:13Yes.
00:40:14Well, keep up the good work, sir.
00:40:16If it's a little extraordinary, chances are it's a Sony.
00:40:24Monday, Logan, Jessica, and Rem are captured by a society with an amazing secret.
00:40:28Behold the terror the future holds.
00:40:30Logan's Rem, Monday at 8, 7 Central and Mountain.
00:40:35Dallas Cowboys have them all first and 10 at their own 37-yard line.
00:40:39Danny White is in there at quarterback now.
00:40:41Roger Staubach's being given a rest.
00:40:43And White is in at quarterback.
00:40:46White with a handoff to Laidlaw.
00:40:48It's got Laidlaw.
00:40:49Loses it to the 38-yard line.
00:40:52Well, Dallas going to some of their backup men now.
00:40:57Of course, 30 to nothing lead.
00:40:58We want to give everybody a little playing time.
00:41:00Doug Dennison also in there at one running back.
00:41:04Danny White, of course, played his college football at Arizona State.
00:41:07Here's the regular punter for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:41:09And the backup to Roger Staubach.
00:41:13Second down and 9 yards to go at the 38 for the Cowboys.
00:41:17Doug Dennison's in there with Scott Laidlaw at the running backs.
00:41:22This is Dennison carrying.
00:41:24He gets across to the 42.
00:41:25This is part of the depth that Bob Lilly was talking about.
00:41:29Dallas Cowboys have a wealth of fine performers.
00:41:32And they don't often get to Dennison, who is considered a fine running back.
00:41:38A final. The Redskins over the Eagles.
00:41:40And the Eagles seem to come up six points short every week.
00:41:4323 to 17.
00:41:46At about, sure, halfway through here, Bob,
00:41:49the Cowboys are going to clinch the division earlier than maybe anybody.
00:41:53Paul, that's not always good.
00:41:55As you well know, I think a lot of times,
00:41:57you know, the two years that we did go to the Super Bowl,
00:41:59when I was there, we had our backs to the wall by midseason.
00:42:02And, of course, I think that made us concentrate a lot more.
00:42:05Danny White dropping back on a third and four.
00:42:09Bill Pearson cannot hold on.
00:42:12And neither can Hunter.
00:42:14James Hunter, the cornerback, almost had the interception,
00:42:17so it's an incompletion.
00:42:19We're almost thinking six here.
00:42:21Here comes the Detroit Blitz.
00:42:23And look at Dallas pick it up.
00:42:25Wide over the middle.
00:42:26Right there, right through his hands.
00:42:28He should have had that one.
00:42:30And Hunter should have had it also.
00:42:33So nobody had it, and it's punt formation.
00:42:38Danny White's back to do the punting.
00:42:41Peyton has dropped back with Duran to field a punt for Detroit.
00:42:46Over to Duran's side of the field.
00:42:48Fair catch signal.
00:42:49He makes it at the 15.
00:42:50They'll start first and 10.
00:42:51The Lions will at their own 15-yard line on a 43-yard punt.
00:42:55We have one minute, 37 seconds.
00:42:57Let's play the third quarter.
00:42:58Cowboys are leading by a score of 30 to nothing.
00:43:03Want to cut your fuel bills?
00:43:07Whether your house is new or old,

00:43:10It can save you money.
00:43:11Your attic.
00:43:12You need a 6 to 12-inch blanket of pink Owens Corning fiberglass.
00:43:16Walls.
00:43:17Full insulation.
00:43:18Unheated crawl space.
00:43:20Insulate below the floor.
00:43:22Live where it's cold.
00:43:23Insulate basement walls.
00:43:25See your Owens Corning fiberglass supplier to learn all about insulation.
00:43:31Insulation is cheaper than oil.
00:43:36You've got a place to get to.
00:43:40Exxon knows along the way.
00:43:43It's nice to hear somebody say,
00:43:47Thanks for coming by today.
00:43:50Exxon wants you here tomorrow.
00:43:54It's always nice to say,
00:43:57Come on in. Hey, where you been?
00:44:01Thanks for coming by today.
00:44:03Thanks for coming by.
00:44:06We have a report now from the Dallas locker room
00:44:08that Roger Staubach has muscle spasms in his thigh
00:44:11and probably will not return.
00:44:13Detroit has the ball first at their own 15-yard line.
00:44:17And we've...
00:44:18And we've...
00:44:24Charlie Sanders
00:44:25kind of popped it up into the air and then got popped.
00:44:29Charlie Waters covering defensively.
00:44:32And he's...
00:44:34asking for a little call there.
00:44:35Actually, it was a good play by Waters.
00:44:37He just stripped him.
00:44:40To this point,
00:44:41Dallas has had the ball for 63 plays
00:44:43and Detroit for 29 plays.
00:44:46And pal, you can't win that way.
00:44:47Two first downs for Detroit all day long.
00:44:50They haven't had a first down here in the second half
00:44:53with a minute 31 to go.
00:44:54In the third.
00:44:56Second down, 10 yards to go.
00:45:02Greg Landry
00:45:03goes to screen, love.
00:45:07Passes it to the 16-yard line.
00:45:09Horace King picked up one yard on the screen.
00:45:11Bob, there's one of your old teammates,
00:45:13number 75, Jethro Pugh,
00:45:15who you played alongside for a lot of years,
00:45:18making good reaction on that play.
00:45:20Yeah, Jethro had a great play.
00:45:21And, of course, he has been a fantastic player
00:45:24all through the years.
00:45:25Of course, here he comes.
00:45:26We see him coming across screen.
00:45:28And see Landry rolling out to his left.
00:45:31Harvey puts the pressure on him, actually.
00:45:33And Jethro's coming across the line, pursuing.
00:45:35Jethro's always an excellent person at pursuing.
00:45:38You know, Paul, there's one interesting thing
00:45:40that we might go into after this next play
00:45:43about how the Cowboys rate opposing quarterbacks.
00:45:45All right.
00:45:4639, and Greg Landry is back.
00:45:48Takes a look.
00:45:49Goes long up the middle.
00:45:52J.D., he'll try to get to a detention, please.
00:45:55Bump back Cliff Harris right there on the coverage.
00:45:58How do they rate the quarterbacks?
00:45:59What are you talking about, Bob?
00:46:00Paul, I don't know exactly the rating system they use,
00:46:03but they do grade them from 100 down.
00:46:06They grade them on a yearly basis
00:46:08and an individual game basis.
00:46:09Roger right now is grading out around 92%.
00:46:12Greg Landry, believe it or not,
00:46:13coming into this game by the Cowboy system
00:46:15had graded up to about 91%.
00:46:17Right.
00:46:18And that's how they rank in the league also, 1 and 2.
00:46:20The last four games the Cowboys have played,
00:46:22not including this one,
00:46:23the opposing quarterback has come out of the game
00:46:26at under 25%.
00:46:28So that's how effective the Cowboy defense has been.
00:46:30It sure has.
00:46:31Wilbur Summers in defense formation.
00:46:33He rolls it back to him.
00:46:37And a fair catch signal went up
00:46:39so that it's off when the ball hit the ground.
00:46:41It's going to start 1st and 10 at the 49-yard line,
00:46:44the Cowboys.
00:46:45Well, Bob, we want to thank you very much
00:46:47for stopping by and good to see you.
00:46:49Paul, it's good to see you again.
00:46:50I know you're doing well
00:46:51making all that money in the bear business.
00:46:53It's much better to see you
00:46:54in your suit than in your uniform.
00:46:57Lindsey, I enjoyed it.
00:46:58Bye, Bob.
00:47:05Used to good friends.
00:47:07Tonight is kind of special.
00:47:08Well, tomorrow we go back to civilization.
00:47:10Let's have a last night in the wilderness party.
00:47:13I've got just what we need.
00:47:16Hey!
00:47:17You've been hiding that all week.
00:47:19I was waiting for the right moment.
00:47:21When you want the taste of a truly great beer,
00:47:24tonight, let it be Lohenbrau.
00:47:26Well, like the song says,
00:47:28used to good friends.
00:47:33With the price of most things going up,
00:47:35the sticker price of Pinto,
00:47:36the best-selling American small car,
00:47:38is coming down.
00:47:39As of October 3rd,
00:47:40new 78 model Pintos with more standard features
00:47:43will have a lower sticker price
00:47:44than last year's model comparably equipped.
00:47:46Important features are now standard,
00:47:48like AM radio,
00:47:49power front disc brakes,
00:47:51rear window defroster,
00:47:52tinted glass,
00:47:53and protective body side moldings.
00:47:55Ford Pinto,
00:47:56more car for the money than last year.
00:47:58When America needs a better idea,
00:48:00Ford puts it on wheels.
00:48:05We have 30 seconds remaining
00:48:06to be played in the third quarter.
00:48:08The Dallas Cowboys, 30.
00:48:09The Detroit Lions, nothing.
00:48:11The Cowboys held the ball at midfield.
00:48:13First and 10 at their own, 49.
00:48:16They've got Danny White in at quarterback.
00:48:18Doug Dennison and Scott Laidlaw
00:48:20are the running backs in there for the Cowboys.
00:48:27Laidlaw loosened up right.
00:48:32Dennison.
00:48:33Dennison.
00:48:37Cross to the 49 for two.
00:48:40John Woodcock made the tackle.
00:48:42Clock is running,
00:48:4320 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
00:48:45Billy Joe Dupree limping back now
00:48:47and heading for the sidelines.
00:48:49Well, I don't know if we're going to see
00:48:51Tony Dorsett anymore this afternoon,
00:48:53but he really picked up here in the second half.
00:48:55Totals, 13 rushes, 50 yards,
00:48:58and he's caught five passes for 48 yards.
00:49:01They won't get it off before the end of the quarter,
00:49:02because this is the end of the quarter.
00:49:10That's the end of the third quarter.
00:49:12With the score,
00:49:13Cowboys, 30, the Lions, nothing.
00:49:15We now pause for a word from your local station.
00:49:19A half-wild mountain child
00:49:21that's kept under lock and key
00:49:23brings rafferty onto the scene

00:50:28As we start the fourth quarter
00:50:30here at Texas Stadium. This is Lindsay Nelson with Paul Horning. Joe Reed got in for some
00:50:34quarterback action during the first half of the Detroit Lions. You're looking at a loser's bench
00:50:41right there. You can always tell it. Somber, quiet. Just got to forget about this one,
00:50:48Lindsay, and go on to the next one. Second out and eight yards to go for the Cowboys. They have
00:50:52them all at the Lions, 49-yard line. Drew Pearson far to the left side for quarterback Danny White.
00:51:00Quick pitch to Denison. Doug Denison. Well, he jukes a little and goes to the 40, 35,
00:51:06and a first and 10 at the 32-yard line. I tell you, that's just outstanding blocking
00:51:12around the left side. They've got Andy Frederick in there now, right tackle. Now watch this. Drew
00:51:17Pearson gets a standoff. That's Laidlaw out in front, and Denison cuts right there. Nobody's
00:51:22there. 17-yard pickup. Walt Williams on the bottom. So the Cowboys, leading 30 to nothing,
00:51:31are driving once again at the 32-yard line of the Detroit Lions. Denison the tailback.
00:51:45Denison inside the 25 to the 24-yard line.
00:51:53Swamp them. There it is again. Good blocking up front. Just straight ahead blocking. Good
00:51:58block by the fullback. Denison comes back to the inside.
00:52:04Second out and two yards to go. All at the 24-yard line.
00:52:10Look at this. 17 first downs for the Cowboys, Detroit 2. 121 yards rushing right now for the
00:52:16Cowboys, Detroit 30. 179 yards passing, Detroit 14. 44 total yards for Detroit.
00:52:23Scott Laidlaw looking for the first down.
00:52:32Oh, they got a seesaw battle with the Rams back out in front, fourth quarter.
00:52:36Still some time left by two. At least 6.24 in the fourth quarter.
00:52:42Got a measure for the possible first down. We've had a misting rain from time to time
00:52:47and you see the foul weather gear that was brought out.
00:52:53First and 10 for the Dallas Cowboys. Over 300 yards in offense today for the Cowboys.
00:53:04Cleveland swapping the Chiefs 44 to 7.
00:53:08Forrest Gregg, head coach of the Clevelands. Who's he? Played his college football in Dallas,
00:53:13SMU. And played with the Green Bay Packers? Yeah, I think he did. First and 10 at the 22.
00:53:21Doug Denison to the 19-yard line.
00:53:27John Woodcock made the stop. Gained a three-second and seven.
00:53:31Oh, Landry getting a look at everybody today.
00:53:40Here comes the play-in. It's Butch Johnson bringing the play-in for Danny White.
00:53:48We're in the fourth quarter with 12 minutes 40 seconds left to play in the game. Danny White
00:53:52quarterbacking.
00:54:02The Detroit Lion defense pulling down.
00:54:06Jim Mitchell on the stop. Recently reactivated.
00:54:16First period out on the coast. Seattle 7, Buffalo 3.
00:54:22Third down and 11 yards to go for the Cowboys.
00:54:31That's Lazlovic coming in at the linebacker.
00:54:35Bursette has come in for the Dallas Cowboys and Danny White wants a timeout.
00:54:42Quarterback Danny White calls a Dallas timeout and heads for the sideline for a conference
00:54:47with the board of strategy headed by coach Tom Landry.
00:54:52You know Drew Pearson was only caught one pass today good for 26 yards but
00:54:57he's dropped a couple and he had one of course they had a touchdown called back.
00:55:02Good catch in the end zone that was called back. There's Tom Landry talking to Danny White.
00:55:10Good hunter, good athlete. Coach Landry made a halftime appearance in connection with the
00:55:15ceremony inducting Chuck Howley into the Hall of Honor and for that he donned a jacket and
00:55:21the hat he's normally seen wearing but he's back to the fall weather gear along the sideline.
00:55:25There are many things along the sideline here in Dallas, Texas. Keep going.
00:55:35Except for the insurance and closing. Oh what insurance company? Ah they're all the same.
00:55:39All stays different. Different how? We give a 10% discount for newer homes. Oh? It's a 10%
00:55:45discount. About 10% off our rate. On basic homeowner's insurance for houses five years old
00:55:50or less. All states different all right. Good hand. Oh boy. When it takes being different to
00:55:56be better all state will do it. That's a promise from us. Good hands people.
00:56:05You know it looked like a light day with nothing to deliver but posters for the AC Spark Plug
00:56:10buy seven get one free sale. What could be easier right? Wrong. Do you know how many places
00:56:17sell AC Spark Plugs? And everyone with a poster like this is selling eight AC Spark Plugs for the
00:56:23price of seven as long as supplies last. Sure getting a free AC Spark Plug is a great idea
00:56:30but you gotta move fast. Next Saturday CBS Sports presents live coverage of the series
00:56:36championship of women's tennis with Chris Everett and Billie Jean King heading the field. That's
00:56:41next Saturday at 2 30. Cowboys third down 11 yards to go outside the 22 yard line of the Detroit
00:56:48Lions. 11 minutes 49 seconds left to play in the game. Danny White the quarterback.
00:56:53Laid low and Dorsett are the running backs. Dorsett in motion outside right. Danny White.
00:57:00Salty and it is intercepted and he ends up by Hunter and he's out to the five.
00:57:10Stopped out about the seven or eight. Could have kept it in there of course and had it brought out
00:57:15to the 20. James Hunter coming up with the second interception. Trying to hit the big tight end Jay
00:57:23Salty down the middle. He's tipped and a good interception by James Hunter. He tries to run it
00:57:31out. He gets it out to the seven yard line. So it'll be Lion football when we come back.

00:58:38On James Hunter's interception the Detroit Lions held the ball first in ten at their own seven yard line.
00:58:43King and Bussey are the setbacks for Greg Landry. Landry short drop.
00:58:51To Horace King coming out of the backfield and he got about two yards up to the nine.
00:58:57Henderson made the stop. Thomas Henderson right on the spot. Oh the big game. Oakland trying to
00:59:04avenge their only defeat. Undefeated Denver. A trail first quarter. Raiders 7, Denver nothing.
00:59:15Sluther Blue has come into the ballgame and Ray Jarvis has come out at a wide receiver for the Lions.
00:59:23Second down play.
00:59:33Landry again throws to Dexter Bussey this time.
00:59:37Oh he has popped at the five yard line for a loss of four on the completed pass.
00:59:43Larry Cole. Tom Henderson got there. Randy White. Bussey's hurt. Oh I'll tell you.
00:59:55Great reaction.
00:59:56The defense. Oh they can play so loose. Lindsay. He got a 30 to nothing. A big lead. They're just
01:00:01out there. Just having a good time now. Dexter Bussey. He's had ankle trouble. He's wearing high
01:00:09tops today trying to protect a little bit. Looked as if they were. They almost ripped it off there.
01:00:17Blazers only to be third down and 12 yards to go. Ball is spotted outside the five yard line.
01:00:34Next Saturday. Championship Saturday on CBS with the serious championship of women's tennis.
01:00:39And that'll be Chris Everett, Virginia Wade, Billie Jean King,
01:00:42playing for a lot a lot of cash. And a special CBS Sports Spectacular World Middleweight Boxing
01:00:48Championship. Of course that's the title. Carlos Monzon retired and his title's up for grabs.
01:00:54And in addition for the horse race fans, the Washington DC International. You're a horse
01:00:58race fan. I love it. Mile and a half on the grass. One of the great turf races in America.
01:01:03For the world's strongest men, this is the fifth event in the pentathlon.
01:01:07And this is where they throw an automobile tire like a discus. That'll be cute. I'd like to see that.
01:01:16Bussey is being carried up.
01:01:21Third down and 12 for the Lions at the six yard line.
01:01:27Landry. Bottom of the stack. Gregory right on top.
01:01:33Landry. Bottom of the stack. Gregory right on top. Oh wow. I tell you. Wilbur Summers is coming on.
01:01:42He may have been the busiest of the Lions here today. He is the putter. The hand is for the
01:01:49Cowboys defense. Magnificent today. In Dallas offense of course. Very inept.
01:01:56Butch Johnson is deep to receive the punt.
01:02:02They have to sprint to get to it and he does. At the 33, he's at the 25 and stopped at the 23 yard line.
01:02:09First and 10 at the 23 on a 28 yard punt by Wilbur Summers. He's had nine punts today.
01:02:15Introducing the Ford in your future. The new Ford Fairmont. A new car designed for today
01:02:26and the years ahead. At 33 miles per gallon highway, 23 city, Fairmont has the highest
01:02:32mileage ratings in its class. Yet it has 90 percent of the head, leg and shoulder room of
01:02:36most large cars. And base sticker prices for the Fairmont line start at just $35.89. Fairmont,
01:02:43roomy but with mileage like a small car and the lowest sticker price in its class. Test drive.
01:02:51Danny White to Larry Brinson. Brinson moves it across field. Stopped at the 20 yard line.
01:02:57Reggie Pinckney coming over on the tackle. Again a three yards on the play. Makes it second down
01:03:02and seven yards to go for the Cowboys at the Lions 20 yard line. Misting rain falling here
01:03:06at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas. With the Cowboys out front over the Lions by a score of 30 to nothing
01:03:12we have nine minutes 15 seconds left to play in this game. Tony Hill is in a wide receiver right.
01:03:19Brinson and Doug Dennison are the setbacks.
01:03:25That's Brinson. Brinson to the 15. Brinson to the 10 to the 5. And he is in there for a touchdown.
01:03:33Brinson in at the flag at 20 yard run for a touchdown. The rookie out of Florida, 6 foot 214
01:03:41pounds. And the depth. Watch the blocking on the left side. Tackle blocks down and a good block by
01:03:47the back. I think it was Doug Dennison and then Larry Brinson does the rest. He gets close to
01:03:52the end zone. He's straight arms. Dick Geron and he got inside for the score. Complete wipeout by
01:03:59the Cowboys today over the Lions. It's a happy young lady. One of the Cowboy cheerleaders.
01:04:06Charlie Waters is in the hole for a friend Herrera.
01:04:11Waters puts it down. Herrera boots it up and it's good. It is now the Dallas Cowboys 37,
01:04:17the Detroit Lions nothing. We have eight minutes 59 seconds left to play in this game before a
01:04:22sellout crowd at Texas Stadium.
01:04:28Introducing the Ford in your future. The new Ford Fairmont. A new car designed for today
01:04:34and the years ahead at 33 miles per gallon highway, 23 city. Fairmont has the highest mileage
01:04:40ratings in its class, yet it has 90% of the head, leg and shoulder room of most large cars.
01:04:45And base sticker prices for the Fairmont line start at just $35.89. Fairmont, roomy but with
01:04:51mileage like a small car and the lowest sticker price in its class. Test drive Fairmont, the
01:04:57newest better idea from Ford.
01:04:58Should have bought mobile one. Your oil, it saves you gas, you know.
01:05:05Should have bought mobile one. Helps you start at 35 below.
01:05:11Should have bought mobile one. Engine temperature hits 500. You're cool.
01:05:18Should have bought mobile one. You only change it every 15,000 miles.
01:05:21Mobile one, the oil that does it all. Take it from a gas station,
01:05:25mobile one, the oil that does it all. Take it from an expert.
01:05:31Efren Herrera will kick off from the 35-yard line
01:05:36with 8 minutes 59 seconds left to play. Rick Kane is deep to receive it
01:05:41for the Detroit Lions. I think he's getting tired running back kickoffs.
01:05:45Two guys been most active is Rick Kane returning kickoffs and Wilbur Summers on the punts.
01:05:50Dallas, of course, is leading by a score of 37 to nothing.
01:05:55Chuck Heverling, the referee, with a whistle that will start Herrera off.
01:06:03Rick Kane at the goal line. He's out to the 5 to the 10. Rick Kane to the 15 to the 20,
01:06:08to the 25, and he gets across to the 26-yard line.
01:06:13Next Sunday, the National Football League on CBS will see Dallas
01:06:18versus the New York Giants, New Orleans against Philadelphia, 49ers and Atlanta.
01:06:24In addition, Chicago against Houston, and Green Bay against Kansas City.
01:06:28And the doubleheader, St. Louis against Minnesota. That should be a great one.
01:06:33Tampa Bay goes up against the Powerful Rams. All next Sunday on CBS.
01:06:40Consult your local listing for the game to be seen in your area.
01:06:43Marv Hubbard and Rick Kane are the running backs,
01:06:47and Joe Reed is the quarterback, and they're now for the Detroit Lions. Joe Reed dropping back.
01:06:53Incomplete. Not to Marv Hubbard, over the head of Marv Hubbard, as a matter of fact.
01:06:57He fooled anybody. He had a screen on the whole cowboy defense was right there.
01:07:03Look at Harvey Martin. There's the tackle and the defensive end out there covering the screen.
01:07:07Baltimore over Pittsburgh. 10 to nothing, second quarter.
01:07:10Baltimore coming back after that defeat last week.
01:07:16Percentage of pass completions today for Greg Landry, 28.5, for Joe Reed, 16.6.
01:07:22It has not been a good day. Dallas is number one, say the Cowboy fans,
01:07:26and they are well on their way to being still the only undefeated team
01:07:30in the National Football League.
01:07:32And Stolbach, 16 for 25 today, 178 yards, three touchdowns. What a day.
01:07:40Whistle time to delay. Delay of game will cost them five.
01:07:46Maybe I could go down and interview the cheerleaders for Dallas the rest of this ballgame.
01:07:51You volunteer, do you? Huh? You volunteer, do you?
01:07:53No, producer don't say anything. I guess I'll stay right here with you, then.
01:07:57Back to the 21-yard line. Delay of the game. Offense. First down, second down.
01:08:03Second down at 15. Back at the 21.
01:08:08Last time Dallas had a shutout in the regular season was
01:08:11the 11th game of the 1974 season, when Dallas shut out Houston, 10 to nothing.
01:08:16They have a shutout going at 37-nothing.
01:08:18He's got a good shot. He's got a good shot.
01:08:20He's got a good shot. He's got a good shot.
01:08:23They have a shutout going at 37-nothing.
01:08:26Detroit, of course, hopeful of still getting something on the scoreboard.
01:08:32Green.
01:08:35Thompson. Incomplete.
01:08:38That was Vinnie Barnes back there covering 31.
01:08:43It'll be third and 15 at the 21.
01:08:45The last time that Detroit was shut out was on November 27, 1975.
01:08:50The Rams shut out the Lions 20 to nothing.
01:08:53Dallas did shut out Detroit once before. It was in the 1970 playoffs.
01:08:59It was played on the Cotton Bowl Stadium.
01:09:01The score was Dallas 5, Detroit nothing.
01:09:09And Seattle, 11-point lead, first quarter score.
01:09:13Seahawks 14, Buffalo 3.
01:09:16Third down and 15 yards to go.
01:09:18Hubbard and Kane are the setbacks.
01:09:20Mel Reed.
01:09:24Thompson and it is complete decay and Rick Kane up the sideline across the 40-yard line.
01:09:29And that is the first down.
01:09:32The second half with eight minutes and 30 seconds to go in the fourth quarter for Detroit.
01:09:38Had a little stun on.
01:09:39Detroit picks it up this time.
01:09:42Reed, Rick Kane on the square out right there.
01:09:44That's Mel Renfro.
01:09:47Diving and he gets knocked out of bounds.
01:09:48Harris knocks him out.
01:09:50First down Detroit.
01:09:52At the 41, they picked up 20 yards on the pass play.
01:09:55Still Kane and Hubbard.
01:09:57J.D. Hill on a wide set right.
01:10:06Reed.
01:10:10And it's Hill.
01:10:11J.D. Hill at the 48-yard line.
01:10:14And a seven will make it second down and three.
01:10:16It's what you call a popcorn game.
01:10:18You just sit back, you're a Cowboy fan, eat the popcorn, don't even worry.
01:10:24Oh, they came out.
01:10:26Opening kickoff.
01:10:27Drove right down, got a field goal.
01:10:31It was over right there.
01:10:35Detroit line, second down, three yards to go.
01:10:46Hut, hut.
01:10:48Reed on a draw play.
01:10:50Hubbard.
01:10:51Sprints up for the first and 10.
01:10:53As they get it over in Cowboy territory before Bill Gregory makes the stop.
01:10:58It's at the 47-yard line.
01:11:04Dallas Cowboys came in with a record of 6-0.
01:11:06It seems safe to assume they're going to leave the field 7-0.
01:11:10Now don't go out on a limb.
01:11:12And coming up the rest of the season,
01:11:14they'll be playing the New York Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Steelers,
01:11:17the Washington Redskins, the Philadelphia Eagles, the San Francisco 49ers,
01:11:21and finish with the Denver Broncos.
01:11:2414-0 maybe?
01:11:27Broncos don't think so.
01:11:33Luther Blue.
01:11:34Oh, Blue.
01:11:37Three straight pass completions now for Joe Reed.
01:11:40Luther Blue at the top of your screen.
01:11:42A little turnout pattern up there.
01:11:45Good timing on this.
01:11:49Number 41, Charlie Waters, comes over and pushes him out of bounds.
01:11:53Second down and a yard to go.
01:11:58Oh, the Packers got shut out themselves.
01:12:0126-0.
01:12:02Walter Payton, I bet, had a big day.
01:12:03I know he scored at least one in the first half.
01:12:05And a bad day for Bart Starr.
01:12:07And a bad day for Bart Starr.
01:12:10Second down and a yard to go.
01:12:12We'll see him next week in Kansas City.
01:12:15Reed now, looking for the first down.
01:12:18Wants to turn the corner, hits the deck when he got it.
01:12:21First and ten.
01:12:24Benny Barnes.
01:12:26Up to make the stop.
01:12:26It's at the 34-yard line.
01:12:28You know, the defense is playing.
01:12:30And their thought right now, Lens, even though it's,
01:12:32game's completely out of control, 37-0,
01:12:35that defense out there you're looking at is thinking shutout.
01:12:37They'd love to have a shutout.
01:12:42We have six and a half minutes left to play in the game.
01:12:46Cowboys, 37, and the Lions, nothing.
01:12:50First and ten Lions at the Cowboys, 34.
01:12:54Hubbard and Kane on the setbacks for Reed.
01:13:00Reed.
01:13:02White.
01:13:03It is Randy White.
01:13:08At the 36 for a loss of two second and 12.
01:13:13Can't like quickness of Randy White.
01:13:15There he is.
01:13:15He comes inside of the block.
01:13:17Knight goes down and watch him.
01:13:19Right back up on his feet.
01:13:21And Reed's in trouble.
01:13:23The Dallas defense.
01:13:23You saw Barnes walking right into the camera.
01:13:26Vinnie Barnes, six-year veteran from Stanford.
01:13:30Second down and 12 yards to go.
01:13:37Joe Reed.
01:13:38Blitz.
01:13:42Larry Cole, number 63, had him in his grasp.
01:13:45And Gregory was down.
01:13:46He's down.
01:13:46He's down.
01:13:47He's down.
01:13:47He's down.
01:13:48He's down.
01:13:48He's down.
01:13:49He's down.
01:13:49He's down.
01:13:50He's down.
01:13:50He's down.
01:13:51He's down.
01:13:51He's down.
01:13:52He was there in a hurry.
01:13:5377.
01:13:57Larry Cole now.
01:13:58Watch the blitz on the inside.
01:13:59There's your tackle.
01:14:00Going back.
01:14:01Trying to block on Larry Cole.
01:14:03He gets into the outside at Jarboe.
01:14:05But he stops.
01:14:06Comes back to the inside for the sack.
01:14:13Third down and 20 yards to go.
01:14:15The ball is moved back now.
01:14:17Just inside the 45.
01:14:23Kane and Hubbard are still the setbacks.
01:14:25For quarterback Joe Reed from Mississippi State.
01:14:28Walter Payton scored twice today in comparison.
01:14:32Over the middle.
01:14:33Kane has it.
01:14:33Rick Kane to the 35-yard line.
01:14:39It'll be about fourth and 10.
01:14:42Thomas Henderson made the stop.
01:14:44Little delay.
01:14:45Both backs split.
01:14:46See him delay.
01:14:46Then they go out of the backfield in a little shoot pattern.
01:14:50Complete over the middle.
01:14:51Rick Kane.
01:14:52He got the 11 yards back.
01:14:55Well when you're shut out with five minutes left to play in the game.
01:14:58And you have a fourth and 10 coming up.
01:15:00And you have the ball if the opponent's 35.
01:15:02You call a timeout.
01:15:03Yeah.
01:15:05Drop kick it.
01:15:09So Joe Reed's coming over.
01:15:15Forward with the Detroit Lion board strategy.
01:15:18Headed by head coach Tommy Hutchman.
01:15:20Can't tell him too much now can he Lance?
01:15:22Not much.
01:15:27I've heard quarterbacks say that.
01:15:30There were times in the career of Lombardi.
01:15:32When if you came over in a situation that was somewhat difficult.
01:15:36Which you had gotten into yourself.
01:15:38He might say to you.
01:15:39You got into it.
01:15:40You get out of it.
01:15:41You're on your own baby.
01:15:50Stuntman.
01:15:57You get the bruises instead of the glory.
01:15:59You hit the deck and bite the dust to your bones ache.
01:16:03Then you pick yourself up and do it again.
01:16:11Okay cut.
01:16:12That's a wrap everybody.
01:16:15Let's go buddy.
01:16:15Boy am I dry.
01:16:17But now comes Miller time.
01:16:19Time to wrap it up and reach for the best tasting beer you can find.
01:16:23Miller High Life.
01:16:24America's quality beer since 1855.
01:16:28If you've got the time.
01:16:30We've got the beer.
01:16:33Miller tastes too good to hurry through.
01:16:38When it's time to relax.
01:16:40We've got the beer.
01:16:43Miller beer.
01:16:46Detroit's going for it.
01:16:47Fourth and ten at the 35.
01:16:48We have five minutes left to play.
01:16:50Cowboys leading 37 to nothing.
01:16:53Kane and Hubbard the setbacks for Reed.
01:16:56Reed rolls and Martin's got it.
01:16:58Harvey Martin on the blind side.
01:17:01Harvey Martin.
01:17:03Here comes Harvey.
01:17:05I'll tell you.
01:17:08He's really got Martinized.
01:17:10Didn't he Lindsay?
01:17:11Got pressed right to the ground.
01:17:13Did all of that.
01:17:14The ball goes over on downs at the 42.
01:17:18Well.
01:17:19You try to run away from Harvey Martin.
01:17:21Look nobody's even touches him on the left side.
01:17:24And poor Reed.
01:17:24You don't even see.
01:17:29Harvey Martin.
01:17:30His 11th sack of the season.
01:17:34And.
01:17:37Cowboys have it.
01:17:38He's running out.
01:17:40First and ten at the 42 yard line.
01:17:43Wide pitching to Denison.
01:17:44And Denison.
01:17:45Breaks tackles up to midfield at the 50 yard line.
01:17:48He looks good.
01:17:49He's running hard.
01:17:51Think they meant to stop.
01:17:53Look at this.
01:17:53New Orleans gone ahead again.
01:17:5527 to 26.
01:17:57I think Atlanta is happy to see that right now.
01:17:59But hold on.
01:18:01You never know.
01:18:01Well let's see how much time.
01:18:02Three minutes and 43 seconds to go.
01:18:10Second down and two yards to go here for the Cowboys.
01:18:13As they have the ball at the 50.
01:18:15Hawkins has lost his voice over in New Orleans.
01:18:17I'll tell you that.
01:18:19Well he charged money last night.
01:18:20And he's voiced today.
01:18:27Danny White.
01:18:30Can't get away from Larry Hatch.
01:18:38It's going to be marked at the 39 yard line.
01:18:41For a loss of 11.
01:18:42Which will make it third and 13.
01:18:48Four minutes left to play in the game.
01:18:55Dorsett has come back in at a running back.
01:18:57Butch Johnson has come in at a wide receiver for the Cowboys.
01:19:01We're being quarterbacked by Danny White.
01:19:08Tony Hill's a wide receiver to the right side.
01:19:10Brinson and Dorsett are the running backs.
01:19:15Dorsett.
01:19:16Shotgun.
01:19:17He took the handoff from Danny White.
01:19:20Dropped to 37 for a loss of two.
01:19:22Making it fourth and 15.
01:19:24So the punting unit comes on now for the Dallas Cowboys.
01:19:35Danny White stays in to do the punting.
01:19:37Tony Dorsett throws 13 tasks for 50 yards today.
01:19:42Eddie Payton has dropped back to field the punt.
01:19:46Three minutes left to play in the game.
01:19:55Eddie Payton's waiting.
01:19:58That is 18.
01:19:59He's at the 20.
01:19:59He's at the 25.
01:20:02And they will start first and 10th the 26 yard on a 54 yard punt by Danny White.
01:20:10Next Saturday is championship Saturday on CBS.
01:20:13For the series championship of women's tennis.
01:20:16And that's Chris Evans.
01:20:17Virginia Wade.
01:20:18Billie Jean King.
01:20:19And of course a lot of money's at stake.
01:20:21World middleweight boxing championship.
01:20:23Valdez against Briscoe.
01:20:26And a special CBS Sports Spectacular horse race.
01:20:28Washington D.C. International.
01:20:30About a half on the turf for over 100,000.
01:20:32And the world's strongest men.
01:20:34The auto tire being thrown like a discus in the fifth event of the pentathlon.
01:20:38First and 10 at the 26 yard line.
01:20:42Read.
01:20:43Oh.
01:20:45Trying to get it to Ray Jarvis.
01:20:47But it's second and 10 at the 26 yard line.
01:20:52The incompletion stopped the clock.
01:20:542 46.
01:20:58Look at this one.
01:20:59Oakland.
01:21:00A field goal.
01:21:01They've got a 21 yard pass.
01:21:03Stabler to branch in there.
01:21:05And a field goal by our old man.
01:21:07Oakland 10 to nothing.
01:21:08Over Denver second grade.
01:21:10Landry.
01:21:11Today has not had one of his best days.
01:21:13There's Roger on the sidelines.
01:21:14He had muscle spasms in his leg.
01:21:16But he looks all right.
01:21:17He'll be ready next week.
01:21:18He looks happy.
01:21:20Landry four out of 13.
01:21:21Listen to this.
01:21:22Four out of 14 wins for three yards passing.
01:21:26Joe Reed.
01:21:29Incomplete.
01:21:30An incompletion.
01:21:31J.D. Hill had it on his fingertips.
01:21:33Covered by Washington.
01:21:34Mark Washington.
01:21:36Third and 10 at the 26.
01:21:38Reed is five out of 13 for 58.
01:21:43Tom Landry.
01:21:43The only head coach that these Dallas Cowboys have ever had.
01:21:47One of the legendary figures in the game of football.
01:21:52He's smiling.
01:21:54But put that one on a disc and save it.
01:21:56Tom Landry doesn't smile all that much along the sidelines.
01:21:59You get a lot to smile about with this young football team.
01:22:02They come at you on defense.
01:22:04And methodically will pick you apart on offense.
01:22:08Third down and 10 yards to go for the Detroit Lions.
01:22:13Kane is carrying.
01:22:14Rick Kane.
01:22:17He went out at the 35.
01:22:20Randy Hughes ran him out.
01:22:21It's going to be a yard short of a first down.
01:22:23Fourth and one.
01:22:26Two minutes, 35 seconds left to play in the game.
01:22:28The Cowboys are leading 37 to nothing.
01:22:34Counting down to that two minute.
01:22:35Two minute warning.
01:22:41Clock will start on the snap.
01:22:43Two 35 showing.
01:22:49On fourth down and a yard to go.
01:22:51Trailing by 37 points.
01:22:53They're going for it here in their own territory.
01:22:56Hubbard and Kane are the setbacks.
01:22:58Hubbard the lone setback there.
01:23:00Hubbard's got it.
01:23:01He's got the first down.
01:23:02And then some.
01:23:04And then some.
01:23:06Start goes out to the 49 yard line with Bob Bruning hanging on.
01:23:09Number 53.
01:23:13Off the left side, more of Hubbard.
01:23:17It's going to be a first down.
01:23:19He's short yardage.
01:23:20Hubbard just pulls his way.
01:23:21Bob Bruning finally lassoes him down.
01:23:24He's carried the ball a few times in his career on short yardage situations.
01:23:32First and 10.
01:23:33For the Detroit Lions.
01:23:36Two minutes.
01:23:36There's the warning.
01:23:39Two minutes left to play in this game.
01:23:41At Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas with the Dallas Cowboys.
01:23:44Leading the Detroit Lions by a score of 37 to nothing.
01:23:50Five!
01:23:50Five on the 50 yard line!
01:23:53Hey Charlie, it was cold last night.
01:23:54You put in a Preston and it freezed?
01:23:56Preston, Preston.
01:23:57Who needs Preston?
01:24:00Preston, Preston?
01:24:02You need Preston.
01:24:04If your antifreeze is worn out or you don't have enough, you could be in trouble.
01:24:08So put in a fresh fill of Preston, too, to prevent corrosion and freeze-ups.
01:24:11Preston, Preston.
01:24:13We need Preston.
01:24:15Preston, Preston.
01:24:16You need Preston.
01:24:21Come on, old trademark.
01:24:22Time for your walk.
01:24:24What's the hurry?
01:24:25I know where we're going.
01:24:26To where your family began.
01:24:28With the same Levi's blue jeans worn by this man.
01:24:32Hey, you've come quite a ways, little registered mark.
01:24:35Now that I see these guys by the park.
01:24:40On 49 yard line.
01:24:43Joe Reed is the quarterback.
01:24:44Rick Cain and Marv Hubbard are the setbacks for Tommy Hutchman's Detroit Lions.
01:24:50Hubbard, even up.
01:24:54Joe Reed rolling.
01:24:57Diving catch.
01:24:59J.D. Hill.
01:25:00First and 10 at the 38 yard line of the Dallas Cowboys.
01:25:04Well, here in the fourth quarter, they have thrown the football.
01:25:06There's a little welcome home, Dexter.
01:25:08Of course, he played his college football at the University of Texas at Arlington.
01:25:12You know, Lindsey, I spent a real great week out in Phoenix.
01:25:15Played a little golf and met with the Fiesta Bowl people.
01:25:18Lindsey and I did the Fiesta Bowl.
01:25:19That'll be on Christmas Day right here on CBS.
01:25:24And then, of course, comes the Cotton Bowl.
01:25:27My man sitting to my left only works 17 straight Cotton Bowls.
01:25:30I hope I'm there with you again this year.
01:25:32I spent a lot of great New Year's Eve and Big Day.
01:25:35First and 10 at the 38.
01:25:37Now, Joe Reed got back there, but there was a fellow named Harvey Martin who got there before he did.
01:25:43Two more sacks today for Martin.
01:25:46Well, our producer is Rapid Robert Rowe here in Irving, Texas.
01:25:51James Sillman, a native of Texas, and our director.
01:25:54Keep up with James, you need a train.
01:25:56Lee Welb is the associate producer.
01:26:00Buck Talley, field operations engineer.
01:26:03Boyce Jones, the technical director.
01:26:06Test to greech on audio.
01:26:10That's why you sound so good.
01:26:11I hope so.
01:26:13First and 10.
01:26:14I beg your pardon.
01:26:15Second and 20.
01:26:21Reed on a draw play to Hubbard, and Hubbard moves it to the 41-yard line.
01:26:27Mike Hickman on the stop.
01:26:29Got a few back, not much, not five.
01:26:33And now a timeout for the Detroit Lions.
01:26:35It'll be third and 12.
01:26:37When players resume, as they have them all at the 41-yard line to the Cowboys.
01:26:4150 seconds left to play in the game.
01:26:43Cowboys 37, and the Detroit Lions nothing.
01:26:51Down the Columbia.
01:26:52The Willamette.
01:26:53The Siuslaw.
01:26:55From the great renewable forests, they come.
01:26:58Logs.
01:26:59Logs to build a better America.
01:27:01And home light is there.
01:27:03Home light, the king.
01:27:04Rugged is the men who run.
01:27:06Men who fell the mighty fir, and see it rise again.
01:27:11When the time in your life comes to get a chainsaw, get the king.
01:27:15Home light, the chainsaw king.
01:27:20Whose reputation for quality parts is over half a century old?
01:27:25Where can you find over a hundred thousand parts,
01:27:30many of them better than your car's original parts?
01:27:35And who also supplies those parts to over 50,000 professional mechanics?
01:27:43Now, who should you see for quality parts?
01:27:47Lions with the football, and it's Rick Kane on the handout.
01:27:51Moves to the 33-yard line.
01:27:53Cliff Harris up on the tackle.
01:27:58Rock is running with 36 seconds left to play in the game,
01:28:01and the Detroit Lions take their final timeout.
01:28:03That's the last one they have, and they take it right now.
01:28:06So we have 36 seconds left to play in the game.
01:28:08The Cowboys are leading 37 to nothing.
01:28:11And when play is resumed, it'll be fourth down and five yards to go for the Lions,
01:28:14as they have the ball at the 33-yard line of the Dallas Cowboys.
01:28:18And when play resumes next Sunday, Lindsay, it's possible, very possible,
01:28:23that the team you're watching right here, the Dallas Cowboys,
01:28:26will be the only undefeated team in professional football.
01:28:30Denver is trailing Oakland 10 to nothing second quarter.
01:28:33And it looks as if they've got this, their conference, and he's wrapped up the NFC.
01:28:41Referee Chuck Everling says he's ready.
01:28:44Cowboys are ready.
01:28:45Lions are ready.
01:28:46Joe Reed's ready.
01:28:47Greg Landry's been ready for some time.
01:28:53Well, you need time to throw the football, folks.
01:28:55Simple as that.
01:28:57And again, a great rush by that Dallas defense.
01:29:00We're having a shake-well alignment here.
01:29:04Bach will start when the ball is snapped to Reed.
01:29:08Fourth down and five yards to go.
01:29:11Reed, retreat.
01:29:12Up the middle, and it is incomplete, and the ball goes over.
01:29:18So the Dallas Cowboys get the football.
01:29:21J.D. Hill was the intended receiver.
01:29:23Up the middle, Benny Barnes was covering.
01:29:25The incompletion stopped the clock 31 seconds.
01:29:28And they'll get a shutout.
01:29:32Dallas Cowboys will get a shutout here this afternoon.
01:29:44Their last shutout in a regular season game was 10-0 over Houston,
01:29:47the 11th game of the 1974 season.
01:29:52Danny White brings them slowly up.
01:29:56The clock doesn't start until the ball is snapped.
01:30:01Brentson and Denison are the setbacks.
01:30:06Danny White retreats and hits the deck.
01:30:10Now, they can't stop that clock.
01:30:12Detroit Lions can't, and it's running.
01:30:14So I should imagine they'll just let it run.
01:30:17They've got time on their hands.
01:30:19Eighteen seconds.
01:30:20Time on my hands.
01:30:23Never knew you could sing after all these years.
01:30:26Eleven seconds, ten seconds.
01:30:28They'll let the clock run out.
01:30:31Because the Lions have used all their times out.
01:30:34Three seconds, two seconds, one second.
01:30:37Game is over.
01:30:38And Tom Landry looks out onto the field.
01:30:41Best start, the best start in Dallas history.
01:30:447-0 at the halfway point.
01:30:49Fred, you're getting married.
01:30:52You gotta look great, so stop shaving.
01:30:55It's better to get stroked in the morning.
01:30:57The Bic Shaver?
01:30:58The Bic Shaver is so responsive, it doesn't shave you, it strokes you.
01:31:02I'm gonna get stroked like this every morning.
01:31:04And the Bic Shaver's cheaper than blades, yet it's a blade and handle in one.
01:31:08Fred, marriage agrees with you.
01:31:10Well, he really got stroked this morning.
01:31:12The Bic Shaver.
01:31:13Lots of great shaves from just one Bic Shaver.
01:31:16And it's time for the next.
01:31:17So don't shave.
01:31:18Get stroked in the morning.
01:31:21I got enough to worry about.
01:31:22My hairline, my waistline.
01:31:25When it comes to my money, our money.
01:31:27We let someone else help us do the worrying.
01:31:29Our IDS representative.
01:31:31He worries about planning for our future.
01:31:33And that means not just life insurance, but investments and savings, too.
01:31:37IDS.
01:31:38Not just insurance, not just investments, but a financial plan designed especially for you.
01:31:43When it comes to your money, let us help you do the worrying.
01:31:46IDS.
01:31:47We help people manage money.
01:31:52Well, Paul Harding for the Dallas Cowboys.
01:31:54It was a day in which they achieved a shutout.
01:31:56And they are now off to the finest start they have ever had in any season since they were
01:32:00formed for the Detroit Lions, a day of considerable frustration.
01:32:03It sure was.
01:32:04Detroit did not do anything right.
01:32:06They kept their road mark intact for the year.
01:32:080-4 on the road.
01:32:10And for Dallas, they just did everything right.
01:32:12They moved the ball offensively.
01:32:14They were vicious on defense.
01:32:16Now the only thing they've got to worry about, they've got a three-game lead in their division.
01:32:19They cannot get complacent.
01:32:20They've got to go up to New York tomorrow and come out and just do their thing.
01:32:25That's all.
01:32:26And we've been watching other games around the conference.
01:32:29Of course, whatever happened down there in New Orleans, would you believe the New Orleans
01:32:32Saints, a one-point victory, 27, Los Angeles Rams, 26.
01:32:37Is that final?
01:32:38That's a final.
01:32:39Well, here the final score, of course, was 37 to nothing.
01:32:42The Dallas Cowboys are 7-0.
01:32:44This is Lindsey Nelson with Paul Horning at Texas Stadium.
01:32:48The NFL Today is a presentation of CBS Sports.
01:32:54Will a grand jury blow the lid off Wyoming's state capital?
01:32:57It's high noon in Cheyenne.
01:32:58A 60 Minutes looks at charges of corruption in state government, tonight on CBS.
