00:00In Buffalo, the Bills and the Cowboys forgot to bring their defenses.
00:04Last Sunday saw Dallas allow more points than they gave up during the last five games of 1970.
00:10Incredibly, they still won.
00:12Undefeated in preseason, the Dallas Cowboys came to Buffalo stuffed with talent at every position.
00:19The Super Bowl finalists attacked the Bills early with their methodical and brutal ground game.
00:24♪♪
00:33Calvin Hill, number 35, swept to his first touchdown of the infant season,
00:37and Buffalo looked like easy pickings to the confident Cowboys.
00:43But second-year quarterback Dennis Shaw and receiver Haven Moses
00:46took advantage of a collision in the Dallas secondary,
00:49and 73 yards later the score was tied at seven.
00:52♪♪
01:11Recent drafts have turned the Bills' once lethargic offense into a young point-a-minute machine.
01:17Coach Harvey Johnson has reinstated the I-formation,
01:20and nobody in football runs better from it than O.J. Simpson, number 32.
01:24♪♪
01:35Trailing the brash Bills 14-7, Dallas evened the score
01:38when quarterback Craig Morton's deft play-action fake froze the Bills' secondary,
01:43and Bob Hayes galloped unmolested to a 76-yard score.
01:47♪♪
01:53Dallas' doomsday defense has always depended on their linebackers' ability
01:57to retreat quickly into the passing lane.
02:00All-pro Chuck Howley, number 54, made a precise drop to the sideline
02:04and almost turned this interception into a touchdown.
02:07♪♪
02:21Behind pulling guard John Nyland, number 76,
02:24Walt Garrison cut back to daylight and another Dallas score.
02:28♪♪
02:34The plucky Bills gained a 30-28 lead in the third quarter
02:37when Shaw and Marlon Briscoe converted a routine turn-in pattern
02:41into a 77-yard foot race.
02:43♪♪
02:46Aided by Haven Moses' perfect block on Cornell Green, number 34, Briscoe scored.
02:51♪♪
02:56Although Shaw passed for over 300 yards and four touchdowns,
02:59the Bills lost because they could not contain 240-pound Calvin Hill,
03:03who physically punished Bills' tacklers and scored four touchdowns.
03:07♪♪
03:12Quarterback Craig Morton threw only 14 passes but completed 10 of them
03:16for two touchdowns as Dallas escaped with a 49-37 victory
03:21on a day both defenses took a long rest.
03:24♪♪
03:29Boy, it's hard to figure Dallas giving up all those points.
03:32Bet Tom Landry wasn't too happy.
03:34On September 19th, their path to a championship began in Buffalo.
03:39While the defense faltered, the many-splendored Cowboy offense
03:42exploded for seven touchdowns that blitzed the Bills 49-37.
03:48♪♪
03:57The next week in Philadelphia, Tom Landry saw his team trample the Eagles
04:0142-7.
04:03♪♪
04:26While the offense scored with seeming ease, the defense was simply devastating.
04:31After two weeks, the Dallas Cowboys had scored 91 points and looked unbeatable.
04:38♪♪
04:40In Philadelphia, the Cowboys ran well, passed well, and played defense well.
04:45That left next to nothing for the Eagles to do, and that's just what they did.
04:49♪♪
04:51For the second straight week, the hapless Philadelphia Eagles
04:54suffered another humiliating defeat.
04:58Against the Dallas Cowboys, the Eagles' only stick-out player
05:01was safety Bill Bradley, number 28, who intercepted two passes.
05:05♪♪
05:10Bradley is a free spirit whose abundant talent is laced with a strong dose
05:14of temper and competitive fire.
05:17♪♪
05:39The Eagles' only touchdown came when Mike Clark shanked a field goal try
05:43and Fleet Al Nelson burned a 101-yard seam across the soggy astroturf
05:48to save Philadelphia from a shutout.
05:51♪♪
06:02Except for Nelson's score, the Dallas Cowboys played flawless football.
06:06The specialty teams, led by number 43, Cliff Harris,
06:10gave the offense perfect position to launch a varied arsenal
06:13that has scored an incredible 91 points in just two games.
06:17♪♪
06:32One man who can always be counted on to generate some scorching offense
06:36is number 22, Bob Hayes.
06:39♪♪
06:42At times, the Cowboys scored so easily it looked like a dummy drill
06:46on a practice field.
06:48♪♪
06:50Quarterback Craig Morton's command of Dallas' multiple offense
06:53gave setbacks like Walt Garrison, number 32, clear avenues to the end zone.
06:58♪♪
07:02But the real heroes for Dallas were the 11 men that comprised
07:05the doomsday defense.
07:07They made the Eagles pay dearly for the meager 32 yards they gained rushing.
07:12♪♪
07:14Their awesome rush rattled quarterback Pete Lisk, number 14, so much
07:18that he threw and ducked all in one embarrassing motion.
07:21♪♪
07:25This blend of unrelenting pressure forced Lisk and his sub, Rick Harrington,
07:29to throw seven interceptions, three of which were stolen by Herb Adderley,
07:33a cornerback considered washed up by Green Bay two seasons ago.
07:37The doomsday defense even scored a touchdown when end Larry Cole,
07:41number 63, rode over his blocker and jolted the ball from Pete Lisk
07:45into the eager hands of Bob Lilly, who majestically strode for six points.
07:50For the Cowboys, it was a satisfying 42-7 victory.
07:54For the Eagles, it was another depressing trip to oblivion.
07:57♪♪
08:00The season's third week saw the Cowboys' myth of invincibility shattered
08:04by the undefeated Washington Redskins, who ran away with a 20-16 victory.
08:09♪♪
08:13Monday night beckoned a huge national audience, eagerly awaiting a blistering
08:17display by this super team from Dallas.
08:20What they saw was less than awesome, as the Cowboys eked out a lackluster
08:2420-13 win over the New York Giants.
08:28♪♪
08:35...for a touchdown. Great speed. We're underway.
08:39The ball going deep to the goal line, where Thompson will take it at about the four.
08:43♪♪
08:47Thompson over the 35 to about the 37, still spinning.
08:51Fumble on the plate.
08:53Waxton Welch at the bottom of the pile.
08:56Waxton Welch, number 42, has picked off Waxton Thompson.
09:01And you'll see a lot of shifting and moving around on the part of the Giants.
09:04They're going to try and confuse a very strong Dallas defense.
09:08Now in the stacked eye. Now with motion.
09:11Rich Houston going to the left.
09:14To the middle is Coffey, and I believe another fumble.
09:19And another Cowboy recovery.
09:22At the bottom of the pile, number 63, Larry Cole.
09:27Well, gentlemen, so far your respective teams are performing a comedy of error.
09:33Danny Reeves holding at the 42-yard line.
09:37It's up.
09:40And it just clears the crossbar. The Cowboys on the scoreboard.
09:4442-yard field goal to Mike Clark.
09:48In NFL Monday Night Football, the New York Giants versus the Dallas Cowboys continues from the cotton ball.
09:53With the score, the Cowboys 3, the Giants nothing.
09:57You're looking at Dwayne Thomas now, of course, as he seeks to get in there and make the tackle.
10:03This young man is apparently fired up for a very great many reasons, many of them personal,
10:09many of them confusing and not understood by these reporters and by the American public.
10:14But he is a very great football player, and we'll watch him at every opportunity tonight.
10:20Cowboys into their own unusual formation. This will last always. In motion, left.
10:26Drawback has Hayes.
10:29Athens is there, but Hayes moves into Giant territory at the 37.
10:34Really a good move by Bobby. You watch him take Pete Athens down.
10:37He goes, tries to get up inside of him. He comes back, breaks to the outside.
10:41Hayes is also with Dallas at one time, and I'm sure he's seen Bobby run deep.
10:44It'll give him plenty of room. That ball was well thrown. Good route by Hayes.
10:48All this in an attempt to get man-on-man coverage.
10:51Stallback. He'll run, and he's a good one.
10:54Stallback for the first down at the Giants' 27-yard line.
10:58Valpeck forces Stallback out of bounds, and this crowd likes that.
11:03420 remains in the first quarter, first and 10 for the Cowboys on the Giants' 26-yard line.
11:09Billy Truex inside the Giants' 15.
11:13Carl Lockhart makes the stop, number 43.
11:17The Cowboys, from that I formation, which they run on a quick count, are on set.
11:24Once again, motion left. This is Calvin Hill.
11:27John Nyland blocking out front. What a block he made.
11:30Calvin Hill to the 4-yard line.
11:33The 76 John Nyland lay a crushing block on the Giants' cornerback.
11:40Houston comes left. Morrison, he'll go nowhere.
11:43Bob Lilly nails Morrison at the 10-yard line.
11:48He can do that. Usually they put two men on him.
11:51He's got a way of flipping around them.
11:55Second down and 10 from the 48.
11:57Calvin Hill, running hard, moves across the 50-yard line to about the 48.
12:02You can call that formation what you want. Always goes motion.
12:06It's time for Bob Hayes.
12:08Atheis is there for the tackle.
12:10Good catch by Bobby. Great catch by Bob Hayes.
12:14Looks like he got a real hard fall.
12:17Came back, hit his head on them.
12:19We'll take him. He's going out on sideline route.
12:22Making a move. This is Atheis.
12:24Bob goes up, keeps his eye on the ball.
12:27That's a heck of a catch. Watch the back of his head.
12:29Wow.
12:3010 on the Giants' 34-yard line.
12:32This is Calvin Hill with a big hole.
12:34Spinning and twisting, Douglas makes the tackle.
12:39John Douglas, number 51, coming over.
12:41Dave Manders with a fine block.
12:43As did Rayfield Wright for the Cowboys.
12:4513-yard line. McNeil left.
12:47Houston, McNeil right. Now Houston left.
12:49This is Morrison in motion.
12:51Touhon, running hard.
12:53Big Bob Lilly, number 74, was there.
12:56Just dropped him like a plane.
12:58Kicking from his own end zone.
13:02All tied, 3 apiece here at the Cotton Bowl.
13:05Low kick.
13:07Kind of can hurt.
13:12Oh!
13:14Harris is upset. 39-yard punt, 16-yard return.
13:18Cowboys moving to good field position.
13:21They'll have first and 10 on the Giants' 34-yard line.
13:25The 41-yard line.
13:27And in the end zone, Rocky Thompson.
13:34Well, you saw it bouncing off the crossbar.
13:37The supporting crossbar.
13:39Mike Clark hits on his second field goal.
13:46Come into the lineup for the Giants in the prevent defense.
13:48Second down, 25.
13:50Sawback looking.
13:52Oh, and he fires out to Bob Hazel.
13:55It's really up in it.
13:57Oh, Bobby catches him.
13:58They didn't make any pay for him tonight.
13:59He's not going to a couple of good ones.
14:01It is a great coaching aid.
14:03Cowboys, first and 10 from their own 41-yard line.
14:07Sawback.
14:10And a thru-ax.
14:12He's throwing his thru-ax.
14:14Throwing in the direction of the sideline.
14:16Cowboys, the ball.
14:18Nice 33-yard line.
14:19Sawback again, looking deep.
14:23Fires it down to the 20-yard line.
14:25And a thru-ax.
14:27Come on, Tommy Bell.
14:28Where are you?
14:29They called him out.
14:32No green.
14:33There to make the stop.
14:35Third and 10.
14:40Sawback.
14:41Now he'll scramble.
14:43Sawback moving for Yardage for the first down.
14:48Thru-ax.
14:50And a thru-ax.
14:51He's coming in tight end.
14:55Sawback getting out of bounds, which he had to do.
14:59Yep.
15:00No time-offs remaining for the Cowboys.
15:02Ralph Hicks making the stop.
15:05Third down from the four.
15:08Thru-ax.
15:09He's tight end now.
15:10Over the middle.
15:11And a thru-ax.
15:12That's it.
15:13That same pattern, only he didn't go through.
15:15He didn't go through.
15:16He didn't go through.
15:17He just turned around and stopped.
15:18Now, they're in the end zone.
15:19Ever going to make that work?
15:20Yep.
15:21Attaboy, Rodson.
15:24...fly on the left side.
15:26In motion is Rip Houston on second down and three.
15:29Morrison is hit hard and he really is hit hard
15:31by Leroy George.
15:32He fumbles the football.
15:34Dave Edwards has got it.
15:38Leroy George really topped Joe Morrison.
15:42Up came the football.
15:43the football Dave Edwards recovers I believe our seventh fumble of the
15:47evening. First and ten for the Cowboys. They're on their own 17-yard line. Dwayne Thomas.
15:53Ralph Neely out the front. Thomas moves over the 25 to the 27. And we expect that
16:00he'll be seeing action. There's Dwayne Thomas on the rerun of the play just
16:05witnessed and the balance of Dwayne Thomas not lost by the long layoff
16:10manifests itself. Look at that. Yes sir he's learned his lesson from Meredith.
16:189-6-3. Here he is again. Very close to the first down is Dwayne Thomas. On first and
16:27ten. Cowboys operating from their own 27. Danny Reed. Nye out in front 61. Nye with a big
16:33block. Reed moving over the 40 to the 47-yard line. John Douglas moving over
16:38for the tackle. You know you watch this team far and on on the ground. You know
16:44how great that offensive line is. 49-yard line. Lance Alwyn. Motion left.
16:51Mark. Looking deep for Bob Hayes. That's one reason why you want to put up in the air every now and then.
17:02That's right but only after you've laid the foundation. That's a great throw.
17:06And Craig sets back throws. And Bobby I mean that's just there's not anybody
17:11really can keep up with him. It's not a discredit to anybody on defense. You get
17:15him man-to-man. He's got four passes tonight for an even hundred yards. It sure
17:20is good to have him on your side. There's Perky Lurkey himself. Rapid
17:25Roberts. In NFL Monday Night Football the New York Giants versus the Dallas
17:29Cowboys continues from the Cotton Bowl with the score. The Cowboys 20, the Giants 6.
17:34From their own 45 the Giants put both wide receivers to the right.
17:38Duhon now comes in motion.
17:41Cockinton. Upended by Jethro Pugh. Big Jethro Pugh. All 6'6", 270 pounds of him.
17:49All right I think this is another good move by Bobby. They were trying to set up
17:52the return over to the left. Just not going to make it. He does have the speed
17:56to do something like this. A lot of times you'll see guys caught back here but
17:59he's just reversing his field totally on his own decision. Again I think it's
18:04another good decision. Bobby's not the biggest guy in the world. He knows his
18:07biggest asset at this club is stay healthy. He's trying to tightrope that thing down
18:12there. He did step out of bounds.
18:14The Cowboys 28.
18:17Duhon over the middle and open. Beating Chuck Howley.
18:26Well that's nine of them.
18:29Bob Highland is upset.
18:31They have the ball in their own 13-yard line.
18:34Craig Morton with the bootleg.
18:37This is Truax.
18:40Truax upended there by Willie Williams.
18:44Truax moving to the 34-yard line and Craig Morton really hit that football.
18:53It's all within motion. Dwayne Thomas. Watch out.
18:58Cutting back Dwayne Thomas inside giant territory to the 42.
19:02As I was saying you get the feeling they can explode at any time.
19:08On first and ten. On the giant 42.
19:10Again Dwayne Thomas very close to another first down.
19:15This time behind the blocks of Rayfield right and again Blaine Nye.
19:19Seven seconds remain. Cowboys.
19:22Some first down. Danny Reeves with the football.
19:25Again great blocking out in front of Danny Reeves.
19:27Unbelievable.
19:30Unbelievable. I don't believe it.
19:32I don't either.
19:33Well that's ten for Morton. That's why we can't say this has been a well played game.
19:38He's going to run a little bit this time. He's going to get up and start it.
19:41And he is not.
19:44I suppose that's why he has been going to the air.
19:47Larry Cole breaking through to jump Bobby Duhan.
19:54Well we'll take a look at it again. This is something that we didn't expect.
19:57Obviously Dallas did because they closed it up pretty good.
19:59That's Larry Cole 63. Dave Edwards is 52 coming in there.
20:04And they were right. They were doing what they were supposed to do.
20:06That's one thing about coordinating defenses.
20:08They don't really play the emotional side of it.
20:11And with timeout the score.
20:13The giant six. The Dallas Cowboys.
20:17He's not too happy. There's Coach Landry.
20:21He really looks excited.
20:24The final score.
20:25Dallas Cowboys 20. The New York Giants 13.
20:28And we'll return to the Cotton Bowl in just a moment.
20:48The Cowboys offense continues to be an enigma Tom.
20:51Enigma. If that's a one cell protozoic creature
20:53then it certainly describes the Dallas attack against the Saints last week.
20:58In New Orleans everyone drooled at the prospect of getting well
21:01against a Dallas team seemingly bent on self-destruction.
21:07But Archie Manning found out early that the Cowboys feast on rookie meat.
21:22While Manning felt the force of the doomsday defense
21:25receiver Dan Abramowitz number 46
21:28found out just how powerful national television is.
21:43But the young St. Tufts gave as well as they got
21:46and the Dallas Colossus began to crumble.
21:52The defense forced six Cowboy turnovers.
21:55The most spectacular coming on Dallas Howell's 60-yard return of an interception.
22:14Manning's scrambling style of generalship eroded the Cowboys ability to pursue
22:18and enabled him to combine with Tony Baker for the Saints first score.
22:36The Saints turned around the game for good in the second quarter
22:39when Al Dodd returned Mike Clark's missed field goal 77 yards.
22:48Only Dodd's sheer exhaustion spared the Cowboys.
22:52But just two plays later Archie Manning turned an apparent loss
22:55into another Saint touchdown and a 17-0 halftime lead.
23:02Manning's own goal was a one-two.
23:05Manning's own goal was a one-two.
23:08Manning's own goal was a one-two.
23:11Manning's own goal was a one-two.
23:13...to another Saint touchdown and a 17-0 halftime lead.
23:28Reserve quarterback Roger Staubach produced two second half touchdowns for Dallas.
23:37One went to Gloucester Richardson number 31.
23:40The other came on a sideline shot to Bob Hayes that narrowed the Saint lead to a
23:44mere three points, 17-14.
23:52But on this Sunday, the Plucky Saints were not to be denied. Another touchdown
23:56on a rollout by the boy wonder from Mississippi ensured New Orleans' second
24:00stunning upset of the year, 24-14. And for Dallas, it may well be the beginning of
24:06the end.
24:11After 11 years, Dallas said farewell to the Cotton Bowl and began a new era at
24:15Texas Stadium. The Cowboys record stood at 3-2, and the New England
24:20Patriots were burned at the home warming.
24:29From the sudden surges of Walt Garrison to the liquid grace of Dwayne Thomas,
24:34Dallas used a dazzling array of runners to bludgeon the Patriots.
24:52Dallas mustered a convincing 44-21 victory, and their clumsy trip to Super
24:57Bowl VI was rerouted again.
25:00We'll have more exciting action on this week in pro football right after this
25:03brief message. For the New England Patriots, the Dallas Cowboys' new
25:08pleasure palace became a house of usher, full of familiar horrors and old ghosts
25:12from their football past.
25:15And Dallas' Texas Stadium became pro football's newest home, and 65,000 Texans
25:20came to see if their Cowboys could correct their erratic path to a championship.
25:26Dallas stood two games behind the Redskins, and a loss today against the New
25:30England Patriots would drown a season that began with bright promise.
25:38On Sunday, Dallas used Walt Garrison, number 32, to chew up the soft underbelly
25:43of the Patriots' defense.
25:47Then they sent Dwayne Thomas coursing around the Patriot flanks, and he cut a
25:51jagged path to daylight.
26:05While Thomas' 56-yard touchdown provided the impetus, Roger Staubach, number 12,
26:11might have won a permanent job today, and jumped off Tom Landry's merry-go-round
26:15at quarterback.
26:21While their offense was computer precise, the defense was mountain man rough and
26:25tumble.
26:32The doomsday defense punctured Jim Plunkett's protective pocket, and in a foot
26:36race, he was no match for the mountain man.
26:40Thirteen years in the NFL have hardened linebacker Chuck Howley's body, but they
26:44have also softened his hands, and a turnover makes him run on rookie legs.
26:56A taste of running, a touch of defense, spiced with Bob Hayes, blended nicely into
27:00a homemade treat for Dallas fans.
27:05Hayes' first touchdown was a tribute to his speed.
27:09His second showcased his surprisingly soft hands, and turned the game into a
27:13laugher for the Cowboys.
27:26Dallas won the first half 34-7, but the second half was dominated by Jim Plunkett,
27:31and the splendor of his mighty right arm.
27:35The rookie general threw for two scores.
27:37The first came on a conventional bomb to Rabbit Vataha.
27:45On the second, Plunkett used just his wrist to flick a bullet to Tom Beer in the
27:49end zone.
27:57While Plunkett was the NFL's number one rookie pick, number 36 Joe Williams was
28:02Dallas' 12th selection, and his one-man show accounted for the sole Cowboy
28:06touchdown in the second half.
28:12The 44-21 victory not only was a nice initiation for Texas Stadium, but it left
28:17the Cowboys only one game off the pace in the NFC's Eastern Division.
28:25Last year, Dallas was in a similar position, Tom, yet they came back to win
28:28their division and the NFC Championship.
28:31Like last year, Landry is again calling the plays, but now he has two quarterbacks
28:35in a team which is two games out of first place and drowning in its own
28:39mistakes.
28:41In Chicago, Roger Staubach, number 12, and Craig Morton, number 14, were two
28:45quarterbacks on the merry-go-round operated by head coach Tom Landry.
28:50On Sunday, Landry called every play by shuttling in and out his revolving
28:55quarterbacks.
28:59This alien strategy worked to perfection on Dallas' first possession.
29:04Mixing in the receiving of Lance Allworth, number 19, and the rough house
29:08running of Dwayne Thomas, the Cowboys' prodigal son, Dallas took a 7-0 lead.
29:21The Bears use only one quarterback, Bobby Douglas, because everyone else is hurt.
29:27Douglas' talents are as yet undeveloped, but he is endowed with a cannon-strong
29:31arm and the body of a tight end.
29:35His nine-yard scramble for a touchdown evened the score at 7-7 in the first
29:39quarter.
29:49Maybe the quarterbacks were not in shape to run those 40 yards through the huddle
29:53on every play, but somehow the merry-go-round began to spin the wrong way.
30:03Suddenly, Cowboys' setbacks were grist for the Big Bad Bears' defensive
30:07mixmaster.
30:19Suddenly, wide-open Dallas receivers became defensive backs as four
30:23interceptions turned the game's flow back to the Bears.
30:37Trailing 13-7, Dallas' doomsday defense towed out and poured over the Bears'
30:42boy quarterback.
30:47Their pressure caused a fumble, and their presence caused a bad snap that they
30:52converted into a two-point safety.
31:10Ahead 16-12 in the last period, Douglas' pump fake froze defensive back Mel
31:16Renfrow, number 20, long enough to allow Dick Gordon an unmolested path to a
31:20touchdown.
31:24The point after proved as dramatic as the score when Douglas turned another bad
31:28exchange into an unusual extra point.
31:32Bears 23, Cowboys 12.
31:39With just over three minutes left in the game, Craig Morton found Gloucester
31:43Richardson floating free behind the secondary.
31:49And now the margin was a mere four points, 23-19.
31:53With two minutes remaining, the Cowboys forced the Bears to punt.
31:58There would be plenty of time to score again.
32:02Cliff Harris tried to find the sideline but found only Bears and he fumbled.
32:08Thunderstruck, the Cowboys had lost their third game while head coach Jim Dooley
32:12and his Cinderella Bears remained just one game behind Minnesota in the NFC
32:16Central.
32:17Week seven brought the Chicago Bears, who seemed to cash in the Cowboys' last hand
32:22in the NFC East.
32:28Chicago hit hard while Dallas did not.
32:31While Bobby Douglas, the untamed big blonde quarterback, made every big play,
32:36Dallas made none.
32:59The 23-19 loss left Dallas with a dismal 4-3 record.
33:05Roger Staubach replaced Craig Morton.
33:09Against the Cardinals, Staubach's unscheduled flights left defenders dizzy as Dallas came
33:14from behind to win, 16-13.
33:31Sovereign defense blended with a conservative offense combined to defeat the Eagles as Dallas
33:36won its second straight, 20-7.
33:46The Cinderella team.
33:57With two heavyweights, they slugged it out for 60 minutes.
34:20Both teams left each other bruised and battered, but through the stretch, it was the doomsday
34:26defense that was dominant.
34:47Finally, the war of nerves was settled by Staubach, who led the Cowboys on a furious
34:51race to glory.
35:48Douglas rams, and Dallas ran on the rookie legs of Isaac Thomas.
36:08Thomas' 89-yard touchdown provided the margin of victory as the Cowboys swept to their
36:13fourth straight win, 28-21.
36:22Gough set the tone for a fantastic flurry during the final three games.
36:28The Cowboys scored an incredible 125 points in these three games and clinched a championship.
36:54Using every weapon in their bottomless bag of tricks, the Cowboys overwhelmed the Jets.
37:02The thorough destruction of his Giants.
37:18While the Cowboys mammoth running backs Calvin Hill and Dwayne Thomas tore through the guts
37:22of the Giants defense, Roger Staubach twice unleashed a tried and true Cowboy tradition,
37:29the bomb to Bob Hayes.
37:45His final game, the Cowboys blazed to a championship on the flashing feet of Dwayne Thomas, who
37:51scored four touchdowns in the 31-12 route of St. Louis.
38:10From the chaos at midseason, the Cowboys had clawed back to win seven straight games.
38:16The spirit came from their offense, defense, and specialty teams.
38:19From kickers Mike Clark and Tony Fritch, and punter Ron Whidbey.
38:33In Minnesota, the Cowboys plundered the purple with a defense that greedily glad-handed every
38:38Viking mistake.
38:48The defense bent the Vikings will, then the offensive line caved in the purple gang and
38:54Dwayne Thomas ran through the breach.
39:07Thomas's touchdown, two Mike Clark field goals, and Staubach's scoring strike to Hayes in
39:13the clutch gave Dallas 20 big points.
39:17But in the end, it was their defense that did in the Minnesota Vikings.
39:30In the first half of the NFC championship, the Cowboy offense turned stale and was led
39:35to slaughter.
39:44There was another day for the defense, and they played flawless football.
39:57The turning point came when John Brody sought out Ken Willard, but found the looming specter
40:02of George Andre instead.
40:14Calvin Hill converted the turnover into a touchdown, and then Roger Staubach cut through
40:19the 49er defense with a series of bold strokes.
40:42The 14 to 3 triumph was the last stepping stone to their appointment with destiny in
40:55Super Bowl VI.
41:00On first down, tipped, almost intercepted by middle linebacker Leroy.
41:06He's number 55 at middle linebacker.
41:10As he dropped back into the pass coverage, gets his hand up just in time, knocked over.
41:16Zonka fumble, looks like Dallas, right, and what a, I don't want to use ironic, coincidence
41:30or what it is, but kick and Zonka fumbled only once in the regular season.
41:33Look at it.
41:34And that's 357 times handling the ball between them.
41:38Zonka did not fumble at all during the regular season.
41:41That's the first time this year he's lost the football.
41:43Chuck Howley, the recovery.
41:44Chuck Howley turns it over to the Cowboys.
41:48Hayes was wide left.
41:53Staubach gains five tough yards.
41:58It'll be third and three at the Miami 45 as Nick Buoniconti and Bob Hines made the tackle.
42:08Thomas in motion.
42:09Got away from one man.
42:10Close to a first down, nailed by Manny Fernandez near the Miami 41 or two yard line.
42:28First man through, Garrison, inside the 35 yard line of the Dolphins.
42:36Mike Colan made the tackle, but tough.
42:38Walt Garrison gets some very big yardage on first down.
42:41And he, of course, was the man who gave that Dallas offense a great lift against the San
42:46Francisco 49ers.
42:47Garrison, first down.
42:48A lot more inside the 25.
42:49Jake Scott of the secondary.
42:50Curtis Johnson, the right cornerback.
42:51Short of a first down, but a big gain to the 18 yard line where it's going to be third
43:17down and four.
43:19Bob Hayes being covered primarily by Curtis Johnson, number 46, but he lost him with that
43:23crossing move.
43:24Hayes right.
43:25Allworth left.
43:26Third and four.
43:27Inside the 10 yard line, running back Dwayne Thomas has a first and goal.
43:49The Dolphins finally held and Dallas settled for a Mike Clark chip shot and a three to
44:02nothing first quarter lead.
44:06A Miami mistake had been converted into a Dallas score.
44:10One game plan had faltered.
44:13assert itself.
44:14Greasy forced a scramble.
44:15He's down inside the 10 yard line and Bob Lilley has him.
44:16Cowboys three.
44:17The Miami Dolphins, nothing.
44:18Second down.
44:19Between five and six for the Cowboys.
44:47This is Dwayne Thomas with a screen.
44:4835 yard line.
44:49Looks like a Dallas first down.
44:50Curtis Johnson made the tackle.
44:51The main blocker, number 76, John Nyland.
44:52Thomas to the 40.
44:53And in a moment, we'll know what Tom Landry just whispered to Billy Truax.
44:54Five Cowboys, Dallas 40.
44:55This is Thomas, 40, first down, 46 yard line.
45:16First down at the Miami 33, Nick Anderson made the tackle.
45:42Second man, that's Calvin Hill.
45:43He's inside the 20 yard line for a first down.
45:44Anderson and Scott made the stop.
45:45Hill again, 15.
45:46He's down to the 12.
45:47We're going to have the officials tell our coaches that two minutes remain in the first
45:48half.
45:49He's an all worth run.
45:50To this side comes Calvin Hill.
45:51He's inside the 20 yard line for a first down.
45:52Anderson and Scott made the stop.
45:53Hill again, 15.
45:54He's down to the 12.
45:55We're going to have the officials tell our coaches that two minutes remain in the first
45:56half.
45:57He's an all worth run.
45:58To this side comes Calvin Hill.
45:59He's inside the 20 yard line for a first down.
46:00Anderson and Scott made the stop.
46:01He's inside the 20 yard line for a first down.
46:02Hill again, 15.
46:03He's down to the 12.
46:04We're going to have the officials tell our coaches that two minutes remain in the first
46:05half.
46:06He's an all worth run.
46:07To this side comes Calvin Hill.
46:08He's close to a first down.
46:09It's first and goal, I believe.
46:10It's to the left of Starbuck.
46:11Hill to the right.
46:12Touchdown, Allworth.
46:13Fantastic move by Lance Allworth.
46:14We'll be back with the Dallas kickoff in just a moment.
46:15We're going to have the officials tell our coaches that two minutes remain in the first
46:16half.
46:17He's inside the 20 yard line for a first down.
46:18Anderson and Scott made the stop.
46:19Hill again, 15.
46:20He's down to the 12.
46:21We're going to have the officials tell our coaches that two minutes remain in the first
46:22half.
46:23He's down to the 12.
46:25We're going to have the officials tell our coaches that two minutes remain in the first
46:26half.
46:27We're going to have the officials tell our coaches that two minutes remain in the first
46:28half.
46:29Fantastic move by Lance Allworth.
46:30We'll be back with the Dallas kickoff in just a moment.
46:31Third and three.
46:32And that's Calvin Hill for a first down at the 48 yard line.
46:33And Mike Colan made the tackle.
46:34Dwayne Thomas.
46:35Breaking tackle after tackle and a gain of eight.
46:36Look at it again from the viewpoint of Roger Saubach as he hands back to Dwayne Thomas.
47:01The Cowboys would tackle Rayfield Wright and Blaine Nye out in front of that sweep.
47:09And Thomas, as Ray said, breaking tackle after tackle.
47:12That's something the Cowboys will do, I think, throughout the afternoon.
47:15Left side on second and two.
47:16Here he goes again, Dwayne Thomas.
47:17He's down to the 22 yard line.
47:18To that short side again with Rayfield Wright and Blaine Nye leading and Thomas can really
47:31move.
47:32I said earlier he's bigger than the 205 he's listed at and he can fly.
47:36That play gained 20 yards.
47:37Bob Hayes to the right.
47:38To the 20, 15, 10.
47:39Five yard line.
47:40Bob Hines finally made the tackle.
47:4116 yards.
47:42And again on an end around play to Bob Hayes.
47:43Back to that short side of the field away from the roll of the Miami zone.
48:05Look at that block by Blaine Nye on quarterback Tim Fulvin.
48:10He just went right over the top and blocked it.
48:17Dwayne Thomas.
48:18Touchdown.
48:19What's this?
48:20Wanna Connie's got his back to you right there.
48:31He's number 85.
48:32Number 40.
48:33Safety man Dick Anderson also had a shot.
48:34Reeves holds.
48:35Cowboys kickoff in just a moment.
48:36Third and four.
48:37This is Howley, the linebacker.
48:3830, 20, 15, 12 yard line.
48:39Chuck Howley.
48:41Remember, he was the most valuable player in last year's Super Bowl, wasn't he?
49:02Intercepted two ball, the more coat passes, he returned that one 40 yards.
49:15Oh, it came about.
49:20On third and goal, Staubach.
49:21Touchdown.
49:22Mike Ditka.
49:23The Dolphins had a blitz going again.
49:24As Wanna Connie blew up the middle, but Staubach was able to pick up his tight end.
49:37Warfield in motion.
49:40Bumble.
49:41Dallas has it.
49:44I think Larry Cole.
49:47Right.
49:48Number 63, Larry Cole.
49:52Third and about five.
49:57Really drilled the Mike Ditka.
49:59First down of the 47 yard line.
50:01Dick Anderson made the tackle.
50:06Dwayne Thomas.
50:09To the 46 yard line of Miami.
50:12And from the secondary, it was Dick Anderson who had the mate in the tackle.
50:17At the 47 yard line.
50:19First man through, Walt Garrison.
50:23Inside the 35.
50:25All the way down to the 30 and then another yard.
50:31Mike Clark.
50:32He has one field goal to his credit.
50:34Here goes Reeves.
50:37He has the first down of the 13 yard line.
50:45With the score, the Cowboys 24 and the Dolphins 3.
50:53Let's pause for a moment.
50:55At the 18 yard line.
50:59Wide left goes the tight end, Mike Ditka.
51:03On the end around, Ditka is down to within about a yard of another Dallas score.
51:10So many others responsible for bringing in the Dallas Cowboys.
51:14Within now only five seconds of the championship of the National Football League.
51:21Winner of the Vince Lombardi trophy.
51:24And the man they say is unemotional.
51:27Tom Landry.
51:29The only coach the Cowboys have ever had.
51:34Tom Landry, a most happy man is carried off the field by his players.
51:40And of course in a moment of victory and exultation like this.
51:44We must think of Don Shula who is coming over.
51:48There's Don.
51:50We must think in terms of Don Shula.
51:53The brilliant coach of the Miami Dolphins.
51:56Who has now twice brought a team to the Super Bowl.
51:59Once the veteran Baltimore Colts.
52:02To lose to the New York Jets.
52:05And now as the coach of the young Miami Dolphins has seen his team lose.
52:09To those Cowboys who are now headed to the dressing room.
52:13And as we told you before.
52:15We all have questions about this game.
52:18Was there a turning point?
52:20Can there be in a game won by a score of 24 to 3?
52:24We think in terms of perhaps that earlier fumble, whatever.
52:28For CBS affiliated stations.
52:30In just a moment we'll tell you of that right now.
52:33We remind you that that's the end of the game.
52:35And the final score.
52:37The Dallas Cowboys 24.
52:39The Miami Dolphins 3.
52:41In New Orleans the Cowboys met the Miami Dolphins.
52:44And played what many called a perfect game.
52:47On defense they came and crushed.
52:50Hit and hounded.
52:51And never allowed Dolphin runners a slice of freedom.
52:54♪♪
53:07On offense Roger Staubach's leadership was never more evident.
53:11As he passed the Cowboys to their first score.
53:14♪♪
53:19In the first half Miami buckled.
53:21In the second half they were buried.
53:23As Staubach sent Garrison, Thomas and Hill through holes as broad as a boulevard.
53:28♪♪
53:52Dwayne Thomas scored the second touchdown.
53:54And Mike Ditka the third.
53:56As Dallas won this super slaughter 24 to 3.
54:00♪♪
54:05For Dallas 1971 was the year that the big lie died.
54:10After years of climbing they had reached the summit of their sport.
54:14But to the Cowboys it may not be a summit at all.
54:18But only a beginning.
54:20This is the measure of a world's champion.
