00:00The risk of cyberattacks means that you need to remain ever vigilant when online.
00:05But what exactly do you need to watch out for?
00:07I'm technology writer Matt Mohn-Hickson, and these are five common types of cyberattacks favoured by criminals.
00:14Phishing, with a P.
00:17A common modern scam in which cyber crooks use emails, texts, and even social media
00:23to get their victims to unwittingly hand out sensitive information such as passwords or even account numbers.
00:30They may also attempt to get their victims to download viruses onto their devices.
00:35Spoofing.
00:37In this type of cyber scam, the attacker will pose as a trusted source or famous face
00:42using the potential victim's familiarity with them in order to steal personal information, extort money, or install malware.
00:51Trojan virus.
00:53A type of malware program which gets its name from the ancient story of the Trojan horse.
00:58Attackers will create a program which looks legit, but once downloaded, can give them access to your systems and steal personal data.
01:08Ransomware.
01:09In this type of attack, which usually targets large businesses, the hackers will get into your system and encrypt your data.
01:16They will then demand a ransom in exchange for a decryption key and may also threaten to auction off the data on the dark web.
01:24Denial of service attack.
01:26In a DOS attack, the assailant will flood a network with false requests causing a website to crash or go down
01:33and thus disrupting a business or government agency.
