00:26few would describe Deadpool as a villain nowadays.
00:29When the character first appeared in The New Mutants number 98,
00:32he was more anti than hero.
00:34In that particular issue,
00:36the mysterious Mr. Tolliver,
00:38who turns out to be Tyler Dayspring,
00:40sends Deadpool to collect a bounty on Cable's head.
00:43Give me back my skee-ball token.
00:48Deadpool clashes with the New Mutants
00:50until Domino gets a few lucky shots in his back.
00:52This also marked Domino's debut,
00:54although technically it was copycat in disguise.
00:57Of course, this wouldn't be the last we saw of Deadpool,
01:00but he'd evolved from an antagonist
01:02to somebody we could root for.
01:04You know, historically, mischief has been my mistress,
01:07so I understand.
01:09But I like to think that...
01:11you guys have really rubbed off on me.
01:14That's not to say his villainous side completely went away,
01:17as demonstrated in stories like
01:19Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe.
01:21Number 19.
01:23He wasn't the first Marvel character
01:25to regularly break the fourth wall.
01:27A handful of Marvel characters
01:29are aware of the audience's existence,
01:31including Uatu the Watcher.
01:45If anyone could contend with Wade Wilson
01:47as the most self-aware Marvel character,
01:49it's Jennifer Walters, a.k.a. She-Hulk.
01:52Smashing onto the comic pages in 1979,
01:55She-Hulk made fourth wall breaks one of her staples
01:57long before Deadpool would.
01:59Um, it's true. I am a Hulk.
02:01Uh, and I'm guessing you're not gonna be able to focus
02:03on this fun lawyer show until you know all about that,
02:06so let me get you up to speed.
02:08In the comics, She-Hulk has fought against Deadpool
02:11while also serving as his attorney.
02:13Despite having a quirky power in common,
02:16they've yet to engage with the audience together.
02:18The closest instance is on the variant cover
02:21of She-Hulk number nine,
02:23where she introduces Deadpool.
02:25Also, if She-Hulk beats Deadpool
02:27in Marvel vs. Capcom 3,
02:29he'll note that this fight might have played out differently
02:32if the game came out in 1991.
02:38Deadpool has gone up against his fair share
02:40of bizarre opponents, but it's hard to top
02:42all of the dearly departed ex-presidents
02:44in zombie form.
02:52And now, the zombie apocalypse!
02:55Coinciding with the 2012 U.S. presidential election,
02:58Deadpool took center stage in a Marvel Now comic arc
03:01aptly titled Dead Presidents.
03:03The story sees ex-SHIELD agent Michael Hawthorne
03:05resurrect every president,
03:07from Washington to Reagan.
03:09This backfires as the commanders-in-chief
03:11seek to dismantle the country.
03:13A hero like Captain America can't put the presidents
03:16back in the ground for obvious reasons.
03:18Thus, Deadpool answers the call,
03:20not being afraid to get his hands dirty.
03:22Plus, he's Canadian.
03:28It's Deadpool meets The Walking Dead,
03:30even sharing a co-creator,
03:32Tony Moore.
03:42You might have heard that Thanos has a romantic history
03:44with Lady Death,
03:46a detail from the comics that didn't make it
03:48into Avengers Infinity War.
03:50How could this relationship possibly get any stranger?
03:53By having Deadpool turn it into a love triangle.
03:56Despite essentially being immortal,
03:58Deadpool has had his fair share of brushes with Death.
04:01He was bound to flirt with Lady Death eventually.
04:04It tracks that Deadpool would be drawn to a woman
04:06who represents something he can't fully experience.

04:16Lady Death seemingly returns Deadpool's affection,
04:19much to Thanos' dismay.
04:21To prevent the two from being together
04:23in the funeral for a freak story arc,
04:25Thanos curses Deadpool with what he deems
04:27a fate worse than death,
04:29never being able to die.
04:36Spider-Man and Wolverine inspired Rob Liefeld
04:38when he co-created Deadpool.
04:40Liefeld also looked to G.I. Joe,
04:42specifically the character of Snake Eyes.
04:45I'm a very big fan.
04:46I love the black.
04:47It's very Johnny Cash.
04:49We can see a resemblance,
04:50with both hiding behind masks
04:52and proving skillful with swords.
04:54Yet it's ironic that these two would share a connection
04:57since Snake Eyes is the silent-but-deadly type,
04:59while Deadpool is constantly cracking one-liners.

05:04Adding to the irony,
05:05Hollywood would get these characters totally backward.
05:08In Snake Eyes G.I. Joe Origins,
05:10the usually silent character
05:12bombards the audience with dialogue.

05:19In X-Men Origins Wolverine,
05:21Wade has his mouth sewn shut,
05:23taking away his ability to speak.
05:25Oh, and in both films,
05:27the characters frequently show their faces.
05:29It's almost as if Hollywood doesn't understand fan bases.

05:35Oh, I wouldn't do that if I were you.
05:43Given his foul-mouthed reputation,
05:45you'd think there'd be no place for Deadpool on Saturday morning.
05:48No, I am not X-Men material at all.
05:52First off, I'm not even a virgin.
05:55It might surprise you to learn
05:57that he made a few cameos on X-Men The Animated Series.
06:00Well, to a certain degree.
06:02His most prominent appearance was in the Season 2 episode
06:05Whatever It Takes, as Wolverine clashes with Morph.
06:08The shape-shifting mutant takes on the form of several others,
06:11including Deadpool.
06:13But when I'm through with you,
06:15your mind will never recover.
06:19I'll risk it.
06:20That said, this isn't the real Wade Wilson.
06:23Another episode, Deadly Reunions,
06:25features a non-speaking Deadpool in a vision.
06:28He also briefly appears as an illusion during the Phoenix Saga.
06:32While Deadpool himself doesn't interact with any of the characters,
06:35it's safe to assume he exists in this continuity,
06:38with Wolverine and Sabretooth remembering him.

06:49Deadpool and Captain America aren't the last Marvel characters
06:52we'd expect to get along,
06:54but they still don't strike us as compatible.

10:37The God of Mischief cursed him.
10:39Deadpool is quite the trickster,
10:41and at times, even godlike.
10:43So the idea of him being Loki's son isn't the biggest stretch.
10:47The God of Mischief once convinced Deadpool
10:49that they were flesh and blood,
10:51but this was merely a scheme to steal Thor's hammer.
10:54When the plan goes awry,
10:55Loki curses his fake son with a new face.
11:03You'd think that would be a blessing
11:05given what's hiding behind Wade's mask.

11:29The Donald Glover animated series that never was.
11:32It's no secret that Donald Glover
11:34was an inspiration for Miles Morales.
11:36Childish Gambino also nearly played
11:38a major role in Deadpool's legacy.

11:47Along with his brother Steven,
11:49he started development on a Deadpool animated series
11:51that would have aired on FXX.
11:53An initial 10 episodes were planned
11:55with a 2018 premiere date,
11:57but the series was ultimately scrapped

12:02some early animation was finished.
12:04Glover also released a 15-page script

12:44In a 1998 comic,
12:46Deadpool opens up to Death
12:47about how he joined the WeaponX program
12:49in hopes of treating his cancer.
12:51Subjected to cruel experiments,
12:53Wade's condition worsened
12:54to the point that he could see Lady Death,
12:56making him want to die faster.
12:58Once Wade's heart is torn out,
13:00only to regrow,
13:01it becomes apparent
13:02that Death won't come to him so easily.
13:04In a way,
13:05Wade Wilson does die that day.
13:07He endures a mental breakdown,
13:09adopting a new name.
13:11The others had been placing bets
13:12on which prisoner would die first,
13:14inspiring him to go by Deadpool.
13:16Lady Death's presence aside,
13:18the 2016 film remains
13:20mostly faithful to this backstory.

13:29A pansexual hero.

13:35While most of Deadpool's love interests
13:38have been female,
13:39his heart is open to all.

13:44described Deadpool as omnisexual,
13:46or pansexual.

13:49didn't put a label on him,

15:36The basis for this joke can be traced back to 1990,

15:42Fabian Nicieza and the late Mark Gruenwald
15:44were fans of an SNL sketch featuring Jimmy Smits

16:44a striking resemblance to Deathstroke.

16:53Since one is from Marvel and the other from DC,

17:08Liefeld firmly argued that Deadpool

17:22Death Mask is secretly DC's answer to Deadpool.
17:29Ryan Reynolds was meant to play Deadpool.
17:31And please don't make the super suit green.

17:36So much so that Deadpool referenced the actor
17:38before he was even cast.
17:40Back when Reynolds starred in Blade Trinity,
17:42an executive told him that he'd be an ideal choice
17:44if they ever made a Deadpool movie.
17:46To familiarize him with the character,
17:48the exec sent Reynolds a stack of comics.
17:50The first one Reynolds picked up
17:52was Cable and Deadpool No. 2,
17:54published in 2004.
17:56In the comic, Deadpool says that he looks like
17:58a cross between the Sharpay dog breed
18:00and Ryan Reynolds.
18:02Granted, they spell his name without the Y,
18:04but Reynolds knew it was destiny.
18:06Five years later, Reynolds got to play Wade Wilson.
18:08And another seven years later,
18:10he'd get to do it right.
18:12You know, for a second there, it felt like we were
18:14three mini-Lion robots coming together to form one
18:16super robot.
18:18This is stupid.
18:20Number 2. Fans kept Deadpool alive
18:22and immortal.
18:24Upon hitting the scene, Deadpool was
18:26merely a side character.
18:28Marvel didn't expect him to have much staying power,
18:30let alone one day headline a series.
18:32The character was immediately
18:34well-received by readers, however.
18:36I don't know how to thank you,
18:38but I do know how to hug you.
18:40According to Fabian Nicieza,
18:42the fan mail for The New Mutants
18:44No. 98 rose, quote,
18:46with, quote,
18:52Marvel answered their demands with Deadpool
18:54popping up in multiple comics before becoming
18:56the star of a 1993 miniseries.
18:58By 1997,
19:00there'd be an ongoing Deadpool comic.
19:02Marvel finally realized what they had.
19:04Although, it'd be a while until Hollywood
19:06recognized Deadpool's true potential.
19:08Thankfully, the fan response
19:10to the leaked test footage ensured
19:12Deadpool's immortality on the silver screen.

20:10bump into Bullseye, who asks him
20:12how long it's been since they last saw each other.
20:14Deadpool nonchalantly replies,
20:16quote, issue 16,
20:18Greece. Writer Joe Kelly is
20:20often credited for introducing Deadpool's
20:22meta nature, although he'd leave
20:24the series after issue number 33.
20:26Christopher Priest continued to run with the
20:28idea though, making fourth wall breaks
20:30a regular occurrence.
20:32Fourth wall break inside a fourth wall break.
