00:00:00Jim, three weeks ago in Foxboro, Patriots pulled off a shocker. They dominated the Colts today.
00:00:06It's the rematch. We join you from the RCA Dome. Welcome everybody. Ian Eagle along with Solomon Wilcox.
00:00:11After two games, Indianapolis looked unstoppable. Last two games, completely different story. What's going on there?
00:00:17Well, when you talk to the coaches about Manning's five interceptions over the last two games,
00:00:21well, they'll just come out and tell you that it's really been due to the miscues and misreads by the wide receivers.
00:00:26Today, they'll scale down the no-huddle offense, try to give them more time to digest the play before they get to the line of scrimmage.
00:00:32New England is trying to build on their overtime win last week against San Diego. They'll have to do it without this man.
00:00:38Terry Glenn sitting this one out with a hamstring injury. Patriots and Colts from Indy. That's coming up.
00:00:44Three weeks ago, one team was undefeated and one team was winless. Led by a new young quarterback, the Patriots embarrassed the Colts,
00:01:00leaving the veteran with no answers. Last week, Brady engineered New England's upset victory, while Manning saw Indy lose again.
00:01:14Today, two teams heading in different directions collide. The Patriots and the Colts. The kickoff is next.
00:01:23Back at Indy, Bill Belichick, head coach of the Patriots, told us yesterday they will be more balanced here today than they were last week in the win over San Diego.
00:01:36Tom Brady, 54 pass attempts in that victory. Expect them to run the football here.
00:01:41Jim Mora, one strong comment he made. He felt people outside of the organization may have overrated his team after their lopsided victories in the first two weeks of the year.
00:01:52Colts have won the toss. They'll receive it. Adam Vinatieri kicks it off for New England as the Patriots attempt to sweep the Colts here in 2001.
00:02:03Dominique Rhodes on the return, and Rhodes is tripped up as he moves it ahead to the 24-yard line.
00:02:10An injury to Terrence Wilkins, and that's why we'll see more of Rhodes on special teams.
00:02:14Peyton Manning. These are not numbers he's accustomed to, Solomon.
00:02:18Yeah, the nine interception is something that's more of something we're not accustomed to see from Peyton Manning.
00:02:24But you know what? He plans on getting back on track today. Says that the offense needs to improve on their execution, and he needs to improve on the communication with his wide receiver.
00:02:32And he told us the lack of execution he feels is on their offense, not for what the other team is doing defensively.
00:02:40First and ten at the 24 to open up in a two-tied end set, Dilger and Pollock.
00:02:44Adrian James had his problems against New England three weeks ago, and cannot find space on the opening play.
00:02:51Otis Smith combining with Anthony Pleasant to make the stop.
00:02:54Indianapolis on offense. Big change. Right tackle spot. Adam Meadows, a durable figure, not part of the action today because of a hamstring injury.
00:03:03The rookie Ryan Dean gets the start out of Northern Illinois.
00:03:06Backs and receivers. James, he's gone over 100 yards in three of the four games this year.
00:03:12The one game, New England. They held him under 100.
00:03:16Also a change with Jerome Peyton, out with an injury. Reggie Wayne gets the start of the receiver.
00:03:22Marvin Harrison getting involved. Out across the 25 for a gain of four on the pass for Manning.
00:03:27Mike Grable making the stop. It'll be third down.
00:03:30New England defensively, and what a job they did against this Indianapolis offense three weeks ago in Foxboro.
00:03:36Front four. Pfeiffer, as we know, not your typical defensive end.
00:03:40Linebackers, Ted Johnson getting the start, but Teddy Brewski is back and available for Bill Belichick.
00:03:45And in the secondary, both Law and Smith had touchdown returns off of interceptions in the first meeting of the season against Indy.
00:03:53Coats come out, and they do use the huddle, so they're trying to slow down their pace and make sure that they improve on execution.
00:03:59We'll call it a third and seven. Out of the shotgun, and a flag comes down.
00:04:05The game clock is not working inside the RCA dome, so the clock you're seeing on our screen is unofficial.
00:04:11The only person that has the official time is Tom White, our referee here today.
00:04:16And we assume that periodically he'll fill us in.
00:04:19Defense, number 45, playing game, attempting to cause a false start on the offense.
00:04:25It's a five-yard penalty. Remains third down.
00:04:29So now a third and two.
00:04:31And Peyton Manning told us, he says, we're going to come out and use the huddle and try to give our receivers more information in the huddle
00:04:37in terms of what they could expect for the hot read.
00:04:40And he says also, it gives this receiver a little bit more time to digest the information.
00:04:44And that's been the criticism here at Indy throughout the week, that they've gone with that no huddle too much.
00:04:51After excelling with it the first two weeks.
00:04:55Manning makes the connection to Reggie Wayne over the middle for a first down.
00:04:58It's a seven-yard gain.
00:05:00And Reggie Wayne, what an interesting story this young man is.
00:05:04Coming out of Miami, Santana Moss really was the guy that everybody focused in on there.
00:05:09But Indianapolis was high on him. They didn't even talk to him before the draft.
00:05:12They picked him anyway. He was shot.
00:05:14Well, Manning had known Reggie Wayne. They both grew up in New Orleans.
00:05:17Had worked out together over the summers.
00:05:19And what Manning likes about him, he says, he's a hands catcher and not a body catcher.
00:05:23I call him very polished for a first-year pro.
00:05:25He's dealt with some injuries.
00:05:27And making a second start because of the injury to Payton.
00:05:29Over the middle. And Dilligan.
00:05:32Off play action. It turns into a big play.
00:05:35Lawyer Malone making the stop.
00:05:37And that's 24 yards into New England territory and down to the 36-yard line.
00:05:43And a little bit scaling down the no huddle.
00:05:45Manning says they're going to come out and continue to be aggressive in attacking the defense with their passing attack.
00:05:50This is right up the middle.
00:05:52Anytime you see them throwing the ball up the middle, it's going to come off play action.
00:05:55Trying to get the linebackers to bite at work on that play.
00:05:57Hurry to the line. It's Grimmidge. James cuts it up field.
00:06:00Trying to carry tacklers and he can't.
00:06:03Forward progress will get him to the 35 for a gain of one.
00:06:06Pfeiffer and Pleasant collaborating to make that stop.
00:06:10That's something that Bill Belichick discussed at great length.
00:06:14Edgerin James, he'll hurt you inside.
00:06:16But he told us he will absolutely kill you on the outsides.
00:06:19That's where they'll contain him.
00:06:21They want to contain Edgerin James on the edges.
00:06:23Don't let him get outside.
00:06:24And they also want to take away the cutback plays and get every man in a gap to shut him down today.
00:06:29On a second and nine, Manning.
00:06:31Throw.
00:06:32On a slack from Gilded.
00:06:35And a tight end releasing to make the catch.
00:06:38Brought down by veteran Brian Cox.
00:06:40But a gain of seven as they inch closer to a first down.
00:06:44And the key for the Patriots defense, even Peyton Manning told us, he said,
00:06:47we have to get yards after the catch.
00:06:49He said, we're going to get the completions,
00:06:51but we need to be able to pick up yards after the catch in order to move the chains.
00:06:55So the Patriots are going to have to tackle well after the catch is made.
00:06:58That time, they were able to do so when Dilger made the reception.
00:07:01Manning is hooking so far.
00:07:03Four of four, 43 yards, throwing the football.
00:07:06This is a third and two.
00:07:07Tony Simmons, the former Patriot, has checked in.
00:07:10Manning throws.
00:07:11Into traffic at incomplete.
00:07:13Wayne took a smack from Brian Cox.
00:07:16And getting physical is something that the defense of New England has talked about
00:07:20all throughout the week, and they did it three weeks ago.
00:07:23Yeah, and Brian Cox has a good read on the quarterback.
00:07:25He's just reading the eyes of Peyton Manning.
00:07:27He knows there's going to be a crosser coming over the middle,
00:07:30and he's ready to deliver a blow.
00:07:31Something he did in week three in their first game
00:07:33when he delivered a hit on Jerome Payton.
00:07:36It really sent a message for the rest of the day.
00:07:38They were very physical in that football game.
00:07:40That hit on Payton, first play from scrimmage.
00:07:43You're right, it did set the tone.
00:07:4546-yard attempt for Mike Vanderjagt.
00:07:48Vanderjagt has been one of the best in the business on the block.
00:07:51Block kick, down the sideline.
00:07:54Winner, Mines.
00:07:56And New England, off the block from Brandon Mitchell.
00:08:02With tremendous field position to start out on their first offensive series.
00:08:08A 35-yard return off of this block.
00:08:14They just do a good job of getting penetration coming right off the corner.
00:08:19You can see Myers is just in position to pick it up in good heads-up play.
00:08:24Have to give Gerdakis credit, or I should say Hunter Smith,
00:08:27did a good job of coming down and pursuing and making the tackle.
00:08:32A double tight end set for New England.
00:08:35First drive of the day opens up at the Indy 29.
00:08:39Brady and some razzle-dazzle on the reverse.
00:08:42David Patton cutting the off-field.
00:08:44Patton to the end zone.
00:08:46Touchdown, Patriots.
00:08:52It all started with the big play on special teams,
00:08:55and now the Patriots' first play from scrimmage on offense.
00:08:59Wonderful play.
00:09:00It's just, they come out with multiple formations,
00:09:03and we talked about this with the coach, their defense.
00:09:05Very difficult to read the multiple formations by this Patriots' offense.
00:09:10Patton just takes it, and they're in man-to-man coverage,
00:09:12so they catch the backside, not really paying attention.
00:09:15They're able to use the speed of David Patton to outrun the defense on the other side.
00:09:19Adam Vinatieri on for the extra point.
00:09:22How about that for a sequence?
00:09:26Vinatieri bangs it home.
00:09:29A blocked field goal attempt, 35-yard return,
00:09:33and on the very next play, David Patton with a rushing touchdown.
00:09:37It's 7-0 New England.
00:09:4229-yard rushing touchdown for David Patton,
00:09:45the first rushing touchdown of his NFL career.
00:09:487-0 New England in front.
00:09:51And Vinatieri kicks it off with Rhodes waiting.
00:09:54Rhodes angles over from the goal line.
00:09:58Rhodes looking for a block.
00:10:00Down the side with Patton.
00:10:02Stumbles forward to the 27-yard line.
00:10:05Matt Chatham got him down low for a 27-yard return.
00:10:08Manning back on the field for Indian when we come back.
00:10:16Now here's the touchdown by David Patton,
00:10:18but watch the quarterback, Tom Brady, who will pull,
00:10:20and the center, Damian Woody.
00:10:22They'll seal just creating a lane for David Patton.
00:10:25You see many centers like Damian Woody being able to get out in front,
00:10:29but they both get excellent blocks,
00:10:31and Patton just uses his speed to race up the field
00:10:34into the end zone for the touchdown.
00:10:36Indianapolis takes over from the 28-yard line out of the shotgun.
00:10:40Takes the handoff. Manning over the middle and finds Marcus Pollard.
00:10:46Pollard, a physical presence, gets himself across the 45-yard line
00:10:50for an 18-yard pass and catch.
00:10:53Big picture, Solomon.
00:10:54Think about how big that block is on the field goal attempt.
00:10:58How bad was New England on special teams a week ago?
00:11:01Bill Belichick worked out throughout the week.
00:11:03He said excellent. He said we have to come out
00:11:05and we have to be really good on special teams
00:11:07because we need good field position
00:11:09because he's afraid of Matt Vanderjet,
00:11:11who's a really good kicker,
00:11:13and he can kick them from a long ways out 45 yards a minute.
00:11:16Call for entering James and gets tripped up as he comes across midfield.
00:11:20James could have had more than that 5-yard gain.
00:11:22He got a strong block from Pollard.
00:11:27Of course, a lot of the big plays over the middle
00:11:29are now coming off the play action,
00:11:31and the Patriots came out and said,
00:11:33we want to be very physical with the Colts.
00:11:35We believe that the Colts are a finesse offense.
00:11:38That's what Ty Law told us.
00:11:40He said we have to be very physical with them,
00:11:42but he says we have to play smart,
00:11:44not give up the big plays and play action.
00:11:46Second and five. Ball is spotted at the 49 of New England.
00:11:49James gets the call again.
00:11:51James, juke move.
00:11:54And gets it out to the 45 for a gain of four.
00:11:57Looks to be about a yard short of a first down.
00:12:00Let's go to New York right now.
00:12:01Jim Nance with an NFL Today update.
00:12:03Thank you, Ian.
00:12:04You remember last week how the Ravens were just throttled by Green Bay.
00:12:08Well, right off the opening kick, a big return,
00:12:10and James Jackson runs it in.
00:12:127-0 Browns at the start over the Ravens.
00:12:15Let's go back to Ian and Solomon.
00:12:18Well, one thing we do know, Jim,
00:12:19that division, things have changed immensely.
00:12:21Cleveland has credibility, Cincinnati,
00:12:23Pittsburgh is leading the division.
00:12:25Go figure that.
00:12:27Short-yardage situation.
00:12:29It's a first down for Indianapolis.
00:12:31Edrin James, low to the ground,
00:12:34but maintained his footing for a three-yard gain.
00:12:37And a new set of downs for Indy to work with.
00:12:42Edrin James, last week, 116 yards on the ground,
00:12:46and he was held to 55 yards on 17 carries
00:12:49in the last meeting against New England.
00:12:51And I think the Colts have to come out
00:12:53and establish more physical presence in their running game
00:12:55and attack the middle of the Patriots' defense,
00:12:57much like the Miami Dolphins were able to do two weeks ago.
00:13:00Teddy Bruschi has come onto the field to replace Ted Johnson.
00:13:04And here's Manning checking off.
00:13:07Line of scrimmage is the 43.
00:13:09James running inside.
00:13:12He squeezes out about five yards on that carry.
00:13:16Teddy Bruschi brings him down.
00:13:18Giving up the big play, Solomon,
00:13:20that's something that Bill Belichick
00:13:22and the rest of the New England defenders
00:13:24that we spoke to focused in on.
00:13:26They'll give up the dink and dunk,
00:13:28the four-yard run, the three-yard run.
00:13:30They don't want to get hurt by Manning to Harrison 50 yards.
00:13:33Ty Law told us it's imperative that they don't give up the big play.
00:13:36He believes that this offense for the Indianapolis Colts
00:13:39become a little bit impatient when they can't get the big plays,
00:13:42and that's when they tend to make mistakes.
00:13:44Last week, New England's defense held the Ladanian Tomlinson
00:13:47to 74 yards rushing.
00:13:49He came in as the NFL's leading rusher.
00:13:51On the dump off for James.
00:13:53And James has a first down for Indy at the 30-yard line.
00:13:56Eight-yard pass play.
00:13:58Cox and Malloy make the tackle.
00:14:01And all week, you know, in the local papers here,
00:14:04people have talked about as to whether or not
00:14:06this offense needs to change its strategy.
00:14:08But they've put up some big numbers over the years
00:14:10since Peyton Manning has come over in 1998.
00:14:13So I think when you talk to the offensive coordinator Tom Moore,
00:14:16he says, we're just going to keep doing what we've done
00:14:19for the last three years.
00:14:20He says it's proven, and the system will allow us
00:14:22to be able to move the chains.
00:14:24And so far, they're doing it here today.
00:14:26On a first and ten from the 30, here's James.
00:14:28There's a hole.
00:14:29Bouncing off the tackle and down at the 25.
00:14:32It's a game of five.
00:14:33Working that right side in the running game.
00:14:39They're starting to get Andrew and James going.
00:14:41It's very important that they have some semblance of a running game.
00:14:44And they're just coming in.
00:14:45Ted Johnson misses the tackle.
00:14:47And James is very quick at getting to the corner,
00:14:49getting up in the hole.
00:14:51Very effective.
00:14:52100 yards in three of his four games so far this season.
00:14:56He's going to need a big game here today
00:14:57in order for his team to be successful on offense.
00:15:00Indianapolis showing some confidence in right tackle Ryan Dean,
00:15:04the rookie making his first NFL start.
00:15:06They've gone to the right side a number of times.
00:15:08Out of the shotgun.
00:15:09Manning has the protection.
00:15:11Sails it to the outside and incomplete.
00:15:13Tony Simmons was in the area, the former Patriot.
00:15:17And Manning is trying to tell Simmons,
00:15:19Hey, here's how you got to run that route.
00:15:21We don't have, he told us in our meeting, he said,
00:15:23We don't have any routes where our receivers sit down over the middle.
00:15:26You have to continue the route, continue running through the zone.
00:15:29We don't want you to sit down.
00:15:31So you can see Manning doing a little coaching down there on the football field.
00:15:34It's funny you would bring up coaching.
00:15:35One of the great quotes we got from Manning, the chess match.
00:15:38He matches up in his mind against the opposing defensive coordinator.
00:15:42Not a free safety, not a cornerback.
00:15:44And he visualizes the matchup.
00:15:46So he knows he's going against the Bill Belichick defensive mindset.
00:15:51That's quite a chess match.
00:15:52Shotgun.
00:15:53Manning on a third and five.
00:15:55Float.
00:15:56Too low for Pollard to handle.
00:15:58And once again, the drive stalls.
00:16:01Just about in the same area as their last possession.
00:16:04And the Patriots do a good job.
00:16:06They've been only rushing three men, but now they bring a number of guys,
00:16:10five players, and Roman Pfeiffer gets a hand up and tips the ball.
00:16:13That's why it's not able to make it to the intended receiver.
00:16:16Good job by the Patriots mixing up the defense.
00:16:18Mike Vanderjack on his first attempt of the day had it blocked.
00:16:22Third time it's happened in his NFL career, now in his fourth year.
00:16:27Wow.
00:16:29This will be a 43-yard attempt with Indianapolis looking to get on the board.
00:16:33Vanderjack gets it away cleanly and splits the uprights.
00:16:40Indianapolis cuts into the New England lead.
00:16:43Patriots have had one play on offense, but they lead 7-3 in the first.
00:16:51New England with a 7-3 lead, 5.42 to go here in the first quarter.
00:16:55And after the 43-yard field goal from Mike Vanderjack,
00:16:58Hunter Smith will kick it off for Indianapolis.
00:17:01Kevin Falk is waiting again.
00:17:05Here's Falk.
00:17:07From the 8.
00:17:09Middle of the field, now angling towards the sideline.
00:17:11Here's Falk, breaking attack.
00:17:14Trying to double back the other way, and he's brought down, bottled up.
00:17:18At the 34-yard line, a 25-yard return.
00:17:237-3, New England. Tom Brady operates his Patriots offense in a moment.
00:17:32At the RCA Dome, 7-3, New England leading Indianapolis.
00:17:35Tom Brady, AFC Offensive Player of the Week, following his 364-yard,
00:17:40two-touchdown performance against San Diego.
00:17:43And flags come raining down.
00:17:46Matt Leiter has had a couple of tough weeks at left tackle.
00:17:50Going against Ray Lee Johnson last week, and Jason Taylor prior to that.
00:17:55Like the rookie out of Purdue.
00:17:57Number 72 offense.
00:17:59Five-yard penalty. Remains first down.
00:18:03So it is called on Matt Leiter.
00:18:06Tom Brady.
00:18:08Maybe the numbers don't even tell you.
00:18:11He had a huge audible in overtime last week against San Diego.
00:18:15Just showing you the poise and the sound.
00:18:17That's the key. No interceptions.
00:18:19Over 110 pass attempts, but no interceptions.
00:18:22He's been perfect.
00:18:23Spreading the field.
00:18:24Underneath, Troy Brown bouncing around like a pinball
00:18:27as he gets across the 30-yard line for a gain of five off the pass.
00:18:31And Mike Peterson with a tackle.
00:18:33We'll show you what this New England offense looks like on the offensive line.
00:18:36Leite, Compton, Woody, Andrewsie, and Robinson-Randall.
00:18:40Backs and receivers.
00:18:42Talked about Terry Glenn, the hamstring injury.
00:18:44Suffered it Thursday in practice.
00:18:48He wouldn't have started anyway.
00:18:49Brown and Patton get the start,
00:18:51but Glenn really allowed Brown to flourish last week looking at single coverage.
00:18:57A handoff.
00:18:58Antoine Smith.
00:18:59Indianapolis was prepared defensively after the gain of three.
00:19:02Rob Morris, first man there.
00:19:04Let's take a look at the Colts' defense.
00:19:06They feel like they're improving.
00:19:08They did make some changes during the offseason.
00:19:10Scioli, Williams, Johnson, and Bratzki.
00:19:14It'll be a dime package for Indy.
00:19:19These officials will have a little chat before this play takes place.
00:19:23Line of scrimmage is the 35.
00:19:25And the Patriots come out in so many formations.
00:19:27They know they're going to get some guys open early.
00:19:30And talking to Bill Belichick, he said it's important for his quarterback, Tom Brady,
00:19:34to be accurate early in the ballgame because he's going to have some opportunities.
00:19:37Here he's facing a third-down situation.
00:19:41Four minutes, 20 seconds remaining in the first.
00:19:44You may ask, why is Tom White telling us that?
00:19:47Well, the clock doesn't work here at the RCA, Bill.
00:19:51They'll try to update you and stay as close as possible,
00:19:55but that's unofficial time more often than not that we'll have on your screen.
00:19:58On a third and seven, Brady steps up and fires.
00:20:01High throw and a great individual effort by Charles Johnson just to haul it in.
00:20:06But it's short of a first down.
00:20:08Thomas Smith had the coverage in that dime package.
00:20:12Not only does Charles Johnson do an excellent job of hauling in this pass,
00:20:17it's a bullet.
00:20:18It's a little high, but he goes up.
00:20:19Look at that.
00:20:20One-hand stab.
00:20:21He grabs that ball, and if that ball is tipped up,
00:20:23it's almost surely intercepted by one of the coach's defenders.
00:20:26We talked about being a hands catcher earlier in the game.
00:20:29You had to be a hands catcher on that play.
00:20:31It's nowhere near the body.
00:20:32When Charles Johnson comes over from the Philadelphia Eagles, he's more than capable.
00:20:36He may get some considerable action here today.
00:20:38Lee Johnson released this week.
00:20:40Ken Walter was signed earlier in the week to take over the punting duties
00:20:45and a 42-yarder to get his Patriot career started.
00:20:497-3 New England, leading Indy in the first.
00:20:54This impressive Indianapolis offense has been working without a weapon
00:21:06the last two weeks.
00:21:07Jerome Payton out with a foot injury,
00:21:09and Payton was having a breakout season before this injury bug hit him.
00:21:13In his fourth year, he's really began to become a major part of this offense,
00:21:17another weapon for Peyton Manning.
00:21:19It means that a little more pressure is put on the tight ends,
00:21:21including Marcus Pollard, who sets up in the slot.
00:21:24On a first and ten from the 19-yard line.
00:21:27Hand off.
00:21:28He's got away, and James has a first down.
00:21:3211-yard carry.
00:21:34Tariq Glenn and Jeff Saturday creating some holes for James to work through.
00:21:40Both Manning and, of course, his running back, Andrew James,
00:21:43do a good job on this play.
00:21:45This is a play that they'll use to play action off this,
00:21:48and Manning will turn his back to the defense,
00:21:50so you can't really tell who has the ball,
00:21:52and Edrin does a good job of disguising as to whether or not he has the ball.
00:21:55He's hitting the hole full speed, whether it's a play action or a run,
00:21:59as we saw in that play.
00:22:00Eight carries, 32 yards now for James.
00:22:03He's got 22 100-yard-plus games in his NFL career.
00:22:06That's 36 games, 22 of them, 100.
00:22:09Manning, long ball, separation.
00:22:12Marvin Harrison down the sideline,
00:22:14and dragged down inside the five by Tabaki Jones.
00:22:18The big play that New England was trying to prevent,
00:22:21it just happened for the Indy offense.
00:22:24And Manning really does a good job of selling this play.
00:22:27First, you get the play action,
00:22:28and then he does a good job of looking off the safety, Tabaki Jones,
00:22:32because he's got his tight end going right down the middle of the field.
00:22:36Marcus Pollard, look at Marcus Pollard,
00:22:39and then he goes back to the backside, going to the receiver, Marvin Harrison.
00:22:43Excellent play, getting on top.
00:22:45Good throw, you see, to Tabaki Jones.
00:22:47Comes into your screen late, but he gets over late,
00:22:50and Harrison nearly gets the touch now.
00:22:51Good sell by the quarterback, Peyton Manning.
00:22:5368 yards through the air, and now a first and goal.
00:22:56Looking for the lead, Edrin James running into a crowd.
00:23:00And nothing there.
00:23:02Maybe a yard as he tried to accelerate.
00:23:05It'll be second and goal with time winding down here in the first.
00:23:12We talk about Manning saying he likes to match wits with the defensive coordinator.
00:23:17In this case, Bill Belichick.
00:23:19And Belichick says, hey, we can't give them the big plays,
00:23:22and that's exactly what the Patriots defense gives them there.
00:23:25They want to make them snap the ball a considerable number of times.
00:23:29And look at the consistency when they get into the goal situations.
00:23:33All touchdowns.
00:23:34Manning, play fake.
00:23:36Manning to the end zone.
00:23:38Knocked away.
00:23:39He was looking for Ken Dilger.
00:23:43And Roman Pfeiffer just got a piece of it.
00:23:46It'll be third and goal.
00:23:48The second time Roman Pfeiffer's been able to get his hands on a Peyton Manning pass.
00:23:52Manning gets a little anxious.
00:23:53He's being forced to hold the ball here.
00:23:57He's trying to get it over to Ken Dilger,
00:23:59but Manning, if you force him to hold the ball,
00:24:02he can get a little impatient,
00:24:04and that's how you force him to make some mistakes.
00:24:07Third and goal.
00:24:09To Indianapolis.
00:24:13On a roll-up.
00:24:14Manning.
00:24:15Stops.
00:24:16Manning.
00:24:17Set.
00:24:18New England read it perfectly,
00:24:20and Mike Vrabel was able to contain Peyton Manning.
00:24:25It's a loss of six, and Indy will have to settle for a field goal attempt.
00:24:29You know, Peyton has a very high motor.
00:24:31He likes to play a fast game,
00:24:32but right now he can buy just a little bit more time,
00:24:35and he stayed underneath his blocker.
00:24:37That was Larry Moore pulling out in front.
00:24:39Had he just stayed behind his pulling guard, Larry Moore,
00:24:42he could have bought maybe a little bit more time to try to get a receiver open on that play.
00:24:46Mike Vrabel, the former Steeler,
00:24:48was never a starter in Pittsburgh,
00:24:50but Bill Belichick made him a starter here in New England,
00:24:53replacing Chris Slade.
00:24:56Field goal, 25 yards,
00:24:57and then Jack has it blocked again.
00:25:00New England's special teams looking like a different unit here today
00:25:04than the one we saw a week ago.
00:25:06And again, they have leakage on the left side.
00:25:09Patriots just come pouring in.
00:25:12Belichick must have been trying to tell us something.
00:25:14He says, hey, we have to make plays on special teams,
00:25:17and so far they've done it,
00:25:18blocking two kicks so far here in the first quarter.
00:25:20Brad Seeley, special teams coach,
00:25:22could have been Tabucky Jones or Brandon Mitchell.
00:25:24We're not quite certain.
00:25:25We'll look on replay.
00:25:26Tabucky Jones comes right in,
00:25:28and he's able to get a hand on it,
00:25:30coming off that right side,
00:25:32the left side of the Indianapolis coach's feet.
00:25:35It's the same side where they came off on the first block kick.
00:25:39You know, one thing Jim Mora hasn't had to worry about the last few years
00:25:42is his kicking game with Mike Vanderjet.
00:25:45Second block of the day
00:25:48for this New England special teams unit on field goal.
00:25:52But you have to block.
00:25:53You know, Vanderjet's got to make the kick,
00:25:55but you have to block,
00:25:56and as we see the special teams coach for the New England Patriots,
00:26:00Brad Seeley, doing a good job.
00:26:02They've been able to pick up something on film,
00:26:04knowing that they can get some leakage over on that side
00:26:07and come through to block the kick.
00:26:08And special teams play wasn't just shaky a week ago.
00:26:11Special teams play has been shaky throughout the year.
00:26:14Bill Belichick told us,
00:26:15Touched the on-line scrimmage first by the kicking team,
00:26:19subsequently recovered by the receiving team farther down the field.
00:26:23By rule, the ball belongs to the receiving team
00:26:26at the spot of the illegal touch by the kicking team.
00:26:28First down.
00:26:30Bill Belichick told us they actually scaled back
00:26:34their offensive and defensive practices this week over in Foxboro
00:26:38just to address the special teams need.
00:26:40That's how much of an important aspect it became for Belichick and his coaching staff.
00:26:45And how big was that block by Tabucky Jones?
00:26:48Remember, it was Tabucky Jones who gave up the big play to Marvin Harrison
00:26:51and then raced over to make the tackle at the two-yard line,
00:26:55giving himself a chance.
00:26:56So it's just a huge play because they dodged a bullet,
00:26:59giving them no points in that situation.
00:27:01Yeah, let's not forget what the New England defense did in a first-and-goal situation.
00:27:06And then the special teams able to clean it up.
00:27:11No points to show for that drive.
00:27:15Vanderjagt, a hundred career kicks.
00:27:20Two blocks before today.
00:27:25Two of them have come today.
00:27:27Four on his career.
00:27:30Log on to NFL.com.
00:27:32Read what Michael Vick, Steve McNair, Jeff Garcia, Junior Seau,
00:27:35and other NFL stars have to say in their own words.
00:27:38It's only at NFL.com.
00:27:40AOL keyword, NFL.com.
00:27:47First and ten for this New England offense from the five.
00:27:50And a handoff for Antoine Smith.
00:27:52And he picks up three yards working the right side with Rob Morris,
00:27:56the middle linebacker, making the tackle.
00:27:59You know, sometimes the team just has the other team's number.
00:28:02The Patriots have won nine of their last 11 games with the Indianapolis Coats.
00:28:07And really their best rushing day came in week three against the Coats
00:28:10when Antoine Smith had 94 yards rushing in that ballgame.
00:28:14He hasn't come close since.
00:28:15So he's looking to have a big game here today.
00:28:17Last week he talked about how many times they threw the ball.
00:28:20Bill Belichick says he wants more balance in this offense here today.
00:28:23As a team, they had 177 yards on the ground against this Indy defense
00:28:28in a 44-13 win September 30th.
00:28:31And to the first, New England 7, Indy 3.
00:28:35You're watching the NFL on CBS.
00:28:43Back to you from the RCA Dome.
00:28:45The start of the second quarter and a second and seven for New England.
00:28:48Brady throwing to Troy Brown.
00:28:50And Brown accelerates to the 20-yard line.
00:28:53New set of downs for New England to work with as Chad Cota makes the tackle.
00:28:57That's a gain of 11.
00:28:58And the coaches have been really impressed with Tom Brady's cool
00:29:02and poise in the pocket under pressure.
00:29:04He comes out in the game completing passes early.
00:29:07That's something coaches say they want to see him do.
00:29:09Completed passes to nine different receivers last week shows he has great command
00:29:12of the offense, knows where everyone is on the football field.
00:29:15There was some speculation this week that Drew Bledsoe might be in uniform
00:29:19as the emergency quarterback.
00:29:20Not the case.
00:29:21He's not even close to being one.
00:29:23Brady throwing again over the middle to Troy Brown.
00:29:26And Brown is quickly withheld.
00:29:28Tom Brady's favorite receiver, David Macklin, on the coverage.
00:29:32That's a 12-yard gain through the air.
00:29:35You see Brady's numbers.
00:29:37He's just gotten better and better each week.
00:29:39He had a little hiccup in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins,
00:29:42but then again in Week 5 against a very good San Diego Chargers defense.
00:29:46He just caught fire completing 33 passes,
00:29:49had the best passing day in terms of yards of any quarterback in the league last year.
00:29:53We're going to get in as many Brady Bunch references as possible.
00:29:56We can get Johnny Bravo in.
00:29:57You know that's a major step.
00:29:59On a sweep for Antoine Smith, Rob Morris got him down low.
00:30:03It's a gain of five for Smith.
00:30:05Trying to cut it to the outside.
00:30:08There's no pressure on Brady.
00:30:09We saw last week with the San Diego Chargers.
00:30:12You don't get pressure on this young man.
00:30:14He'll just grow in confidence as the game goes on.
00:30:17And he can get hot.
00:30:18He has a very strong arm and quite mobile for a very big guy.
00:30:22Very impressed with his mobility, but certainly impressed with the strength of his arm.
00:30:26118 passes now in his NFL career.
00:30:28Has not thrown a pick on a handoff.
00:30:31Smith into a crowd and could not emerge from that hole.
00:30:36Brad Scioli involved in the stop.
00:30:38It's a gain of three.
00:30:40It'll be third down for New England.
00:30:43You know, with Brady, we talked to him and asked him,
00:30:45being down 10 points, inexperienced player, late in the game against San Diego,
00:30:50he said, you know what, I thought back to my college days.
00:30:53My first start against Notre Dame, Michigan was down 10,
00:30:56and he allowed himself to think that they couldn't come back.
00:30:59They ended up losing the game.
00:31:00He said he would never think that way again.
00:31:02He tried to give him the script in his mind,
00:31:04the way that they could come back and beat the Chargers,
00:31:06and it happened just the way he had imagined it in his mind.
00:31:09Motion man Rutledge.
00:31:12J.R. Redman back from injury, but can't get the first down.
00:31:15A flag on the play.
00:31:17Rob Morris, good pursuit.
00:31:20No gain for Redman on the carry.
00:31:25Very young linebackers for the Colts.
00:31:28They have made some mistakes.
00:31:33They've continued to improve as the season has come on.
00:31:36Talking to the coaches, they say we can make the perfect call in the huddle,
00:31:40but it's the execution amongst our young linebackers that we're looking for.
00:31:43That time Rob Morris was able to make the play.
00:31:45Illegal motion, number 83 offense.
00:31:47That penalty has been flying.
00:31:49Fourth down.
00:31:52Illegal motion called on Rutledge, the tight end.
00:31:55Keep your eye on number 94, Morris.
00:31:57Going right to the ball.
00:31:58Flowing hard inside out.
00:32:00Makes the excellent tackle on Redman.
00:32:03Just good, clean recognition.
00:32:04He's able to read the play and then pursue and execute.
00:32:07Ken Walter, the former Carolina Panther, left-footed putter.
00:32:12Moving forward to bring it in, Trevor Inslee.
00:32:15And he catches cleanly at the 24-yard line.
00:32:1835-yard putt.
00:32:20Seven to three.
00:32:21The Pats with the advantage.
00:32:26Indianapolis, the top-ranked offense of the NFL,
00:32:28averaging more than 400 yards per game.
00:32:31The points have been hard to come by so far today.
00:32:33Two-block field goal attempts.
00:32:35And a goal-line stand from the New England defense.
00:32:38It's 7-3 Patriots.
00:32:39Hand-off from Edrin James.
00:32:41Turning it upfield and turning it into a good gainer on first down to the 30-yard line.
00:32:47Picks up five.
00:32:48Ty Love making the tackle.
00:32:50And right now the coach's off.
00:32:52He's showing, I think, a great deal of patience there.
00:32:54Looking to come out and try to run the ball with Edrin James.
00:32:57And right now they've run the ball 10 times as opposed to 12 passes.
00:33:01So they have, I think, some really good balance.
00:33:04And they're content to just really, I think, stay balanced
00:33:06and try to move down the field as patiently as they possibly can.
00:33:10You look at the Indy schedule.
00:33:11They do have winnable games coming up against Kansas City and Buffalo.
00:33:15And again, James again.
00:33:17And this time forced to the sideline.
00:33:19Late hit.
00:33:20Flag comes down.
00:33:24Otis Smith hit him first, and then Stevens came flying in.
00:33:28Otis Smith hit him so hard he knocked Edrin James out of one of his shoes.
00:33:33The late hit.
00:33:34Out of bounds.
00:33:35That's what drew the flag.
00:33:39Belichick asking his defense, stay disciplined against this offense.
00:33:43Don't give them extra yardage.
00:33:46And a face mask is called.
00:33:53It's really good pursued by, I think, the New England Patriots' defense.
00:33:57They're getting guys at the point of attack, getting some penetration.
00:34:01Hurstner foul.
00:34:03Face mask on a tackle.
00:34:05It's a 15-yard penalty.
00:34:07The attack on the end of the play.
00:34:09The first down.
00:34:10This is Norman Pfeiffer.
00:34:12He inadvertently, I think by accident, grabs the face mask of Edrin James.
00:34:16Nevertheless, you have to call it.
00:34:17But you can see he was also hit well after he was out of bounds.
00:34:21Well, my mistake.
00:34:22I thought the call would clearly be on Matt Stevens as James was angling out of bounds.
00:34:27One foot was already out.
00:34:29But it is the face mask penalty.
00:34:31I think they could have called either one.
00:34:33It's all first and ten for this Indy offense.
00:34:37Now at the 47-yard line.
00:34:41Off the pump fake finds James releasing out of the backfield.
00:34:44Gorgeous juke move as he took it to the outside.
00:34:48He made Mike Vrabel miss, and he turned it into extra yardage.
00:34:51Nine or ten, depending upon where they spot it.
00:34:54And Peyton Manning does an excellent job of, I think, selling plays
00:34:57because he's going to look over to his left.
00:34:59He's just buying time, and then he pumped fake long to find Edrin James.
00:35:02But this is what Peyton wants from his receivers.
00:35:04Yards after the catch.
00:35:06Edrin James makes the catch.
00:35:07He's able to elude the would-be tackler, Mike Vrabel.
00:35:10And get outside for additional yards.
00:35:11They'll measure it to see if James did get enough for the first out.
00:35:17As they extend the chain, it'll be a little bit short.
00:35:20So give them a nine-yard gain on the reception.
00:35:23And it will be second and inches for this Indianapolis offense.
00:35:27They are in New England territory now.
00:35:29Ball is at the 43-yard line.
00:35:33Indianapolis has been able to move the football.
00:35:35It's just cashing in points, which has been the problem.
00:35:38They have to make plays in the red zone.
00:35:40They've been able to get down there, but they've had two kicks blocked.
00:35:43But they had a first and goal on the two-yard line.
00:35:46Just moved backwards from there.
00:35:47Was not able to execute and get into the end zone.
00:35:49Forced to try to kick a field goal and had it blocked.
00:35:52Colts have had a lot of success here at the RCA Dome in recent years.
00:35:56They are 14-4 at home since the start of the 99 season.
00:36:00Patriots have not been able to win consistently on the road last couple of years.
00:36:04James' second effort.
00:36:06And he's got a first down for Indy.
00:36:08Straight up the gut for a gain of three.
00:36:11And that's what the Colts have to do.
00:36:12I think they have to try to establish some physical presence in the running game.
00:36:16Not just running outside on the edges, but right up the middle.
00:36:19Nice hit by middle linebacker Brian Cox.
00:36:22But Edwin James gives it a second effort.
00:36:24Maybe get the extra yards and pick up the first down.
00:36:26Brian Cox told us, we don't want James running north and south.
00:36:32He can just find those holes and shoot through them.
00:36:36Play action. Manning in trouble.
00:36:38Manning is sacked.
00:36:39Back at midfield, Bobby Hamilton getting a paw on him.
00:36:45Bobby Hamilton working against the rookie, Ryan Dean.
00:36:48He just shot out of a gun.
00:36:50He's coming full tilt right there as you see him.
00:36:53He's able to beat the tackle, the rookie, and get to the quarterback.
00:36:57Peyton Manning is one of the least sacked quarterbacks in the National Football League.
00:37:00Bill Belichick says he's much like a Dan Marino in his ability to redefense.
00:37:06Very quickly, but that time, Bobby Hamilton didn't give Peyton any time to make a decision.
00:37:12Third sack of the season for Hamilton.
00:37:14It's a loss of eight.
00:37:15Second and 18.
00:37:16Second New England sack of the day.
00:37:18Manning steps up. Protection is there.
00:37:20Knockdown.
00:37:21Brandon Mitchell.
00:37:22Live football.
00:37:24And Steve McKinney, the left guard, able to bring it in.
00:37:28So what should have been third and 18 turns into a six-yard gain.
00:37:32It'll be third and 12.
00:37:34This is the third pass that Peyton Manning has had tipped and knocked down.
00:37:38Doesn't it for him.
00:37:39It comes in.
00:37:40Falls right into the hands of an Indianapolis coach.
00:37:43And you can see the ball is knocked down right there.
00:37:47And the coach very fortunate.
00:37:49Many of his interceptions have come off tip passes just like that.
00:37:52Now we saw Brian Cox catch a pass last week for New England.
00:37:55Why not?
00:37:56Steve McKinney getting involved for Indianapolis.
00:37:58Right place, right time.
00:38:00Shotgun on a third and 12.
00:38:02New England crowding the line.
00:38:05Manning steps up.
00:38:06Manning with some heat.
00:38:07And a slap.
00:38:08Knocked away.
00:38:10Good defensive play by Terrell Buckley.
00:38:14Roman Pfeiffer applied some pressure on Manning who had to get rid of it.
00:38:18That time the Patriots had a delayed blitz.
00:38:21That time forcing Manning to get rid of the ball.
00:38:23But excellent coverage in the secondary.
00:38:26You can see here, coming right there late.
00:38:29That would be Roman Pfeiffer forcing him to get rid of the football
00:38:32a little bit before Peyton Manning was ready.
00:38:35Reggie Wayne the intended receiver.
00:38:37And this defensive unit for New England has been spirited so far.
00:38:42Troy Brown waiting.
00:38:43The Hunter Smith punt.
00:38:47High in the air.
00:38:49Brown fair catch.
00:38:51And brings it in at the 8.
00:38:54That's where New England will take over offensively after the 35-yard punt.
00:38:58It's the Patriots in front.
00:38:597-3 over the Colts.
00:39:04An excited young man.
00:39:06The Indy 500 Speedway Museum.
00:39:10Coming to you from the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
00:39:127-3 New England with the lead.
00:39:159-15 to go until halftime.
00:39:17And a first and 10 from the 8.
00:39:20Brady looking to throw it.
00:39:21Airing it out.
00:39:22Brady.
00:39:24Coming back for the football.
00:39:25David Patton.
00:39:26He couldn't take it the distance.
00:39:28Patton.
00:39:29Streaks in.
00:39:3091-yard touchdown.
00:39:36And yesterday I asked many of the receivers, I said,
00:39:39has Tom Brady underthrown any of the streaky wide receivers on this football team?
00:39:43He said it's impossible.
00:39:44You just saw the power and strength of the arm of Tom Brady.
00:39:48Excellent throw.
00:39:49Well timed as well.
00:39:51David Macklin was beat on the play.
00:39:53The second-year corner out of Penn State.
00:39:57And this is just a simple go route.
00:39:59This is just the speed of David Patton versus Macklin.
00:40:02And Patton wins going away.
00:40:05They don't even close in after he makes the reception.
00:40:07Just a wonderful throw.
00:40:08Well timed pass route.
00:40:10Excellent throw by Tom Brady.
00:40:12And what a day that David Patton is having here in the first half.
00:40:15A 29-yard rushing touchdown.
00:40:18As Vinatieri adds the extra point.
00:40:21And Patton with a 91-yard reception for a score.
00:40:27Tom Brady's got the look of a leader.
00:40:30His team's in front.
00:40:34Longest pass play in New England Patriots history.
00:40:38Topping the mark of 90 yards.
00:40:40Tony Eason to Craig James, our CBS colleague back in 1985.
00:40:44Now it's Brady to Patton in the Patriot record book.
00:40:48Dominique Rhodes on the return.
00:40:50Off the kick from Vinatieri.
00:40:52Rhodes to the outside.
00:40:54And wrapped up out of bounds, shy of the 25.
00:40:58David Patton will do a good job on the play.
00:41:00Simply because he gets Macklin to turn his back to the quarterback.
00:41:05And once he turns his hip, he'll just race right inside.
00:41:08And then it's just speed from there.
00:41:10And Tom Brady, he puts it out in front.
00:41:12You'll see, Patton doesn't even break stride.
00:41:15He's continuing with his speed.
00:41:17He's able to outrun the quarterback, Macklin, as well as the free safety, Idrees Bashir.
00:41:22That's just a speed route there.
00:41:24Trusting the speed of Patton to outrun the entire defense.
00:41:27This is assistant coach Pepper Johnson giving it a little love.
00:41:29He's like, come on, get to the end zone.
00:41:33I have to say, that's about a 12-inch vertical leap.
00:41:35Yeah, but the thunder we heard when he hit the ground, that's the thing.
00:41:40Play action.
00:41:41Manning, under heat again and caught from behind by Bobby Hamilton.
00:41:48Hamilton, the former Jet, signed as a free agent by Bill Belichick last year.
00:41:54And third New England sack of the day.
00:41:56And Hamilton, he knows he's working against a rookie.
00:41:58And that's why he's just bringing it.
00:42:00He understands he's going against the rookie, Ryan Deem.
00:42:03And he's coming after the quarterback.
00:42:04But right now, the Coats are in a known situation.
00:42:07They're down 14-3.
00:42:08And so, they know that the Coats have to pass the football.
00:42:11They're pinning their ears back.
00:42:12I think the Coats are going to have to stay patient.
00:42:14This game is still early.
00:42:15Plenty of time.
00:42:16It's been aggressive from Romeo Crinnell.
00:42:18And we talked about the physical nature.
00:42:20New England knew they were going to make it a physical game, not a finesse game.
00:42:23Manning on a scramble.
00:42:25Manning on a pump fake.
00:42:26And he'll take a smack once again from Roman Pfeiffer.
00:42:30It'll be a one-yard gain for Manning.
00:42:34Who's now trying to get on the same page as his skill position.
00:42:37There's some frustration starting to set in, right?
00:42:40You see a cover-two zone.
00:42:42That's with the two safeties over the top.
00:42:44And the corners is just sitting with the two middle linebackers.
00:42:47He's trying to get the receivers to just come across the middle
00:42:50and find an open area where Manning can get them the ball.
00:42:54Right now, none of the receivers seem to be on the same page
00:42:57with their quarterback, Peyton Manning.
00:43:01Frustrating day so far for Peyton Manning.
00:43:04Got off to a good start, but New England has neutralized him since.
00:43:08Manning again under pressure and forced to throw it away.
00:43:12It was in the direction of Edrin James.
00:43:14Willie McGinnis applied that pressure and a flag down.
00:43:18And with McGinnis applying the pressure,
00:43:20didn't give Edrin James to come off his block
00:43:22with the defensive end Roman Pfeiffer
00:43:24and get open for the potential screen play.
00:43:28The sequence there.
00:43:30First, second, and third down.
00:43:31Manning had no time to work with.
00:43:34They're getting pressure on Manning.
00:43:36We talked to Belichick.
00:43:37He says, you know what?
00:43:38We can just force him to hold the ball.
00:43:40I think they're doing a good job of mixing it up.
00:43:42They're not blitzing.
00:43:43They're forcing him to hold it and make decisions.
00:43:45And then they're bringing the blitzer late
00:43:47and forcing him to get rid of the ball when he's uncomfortable.
00:43:51Penalty against Indy.
00:43:54You know, it's the linemen.
00:43:55Downfield, on the offense, number 50.
00:43:59The penalty is declined.
00:44:00We'll take the result of the play.
00:44:02Fourth down.
00:44:03Called on Larry Moore, but of course New England
00:44:06declines the penalty and they're forcing Indy to punt it.
00:44:08McGinnis is coming off the top.
00:44:10You see Pfeiffer holding up James,
00:44:12and Edgerton's trying to get out into a route,
00:44:14but Manning's forced to throw the ball much sooner than what he wanted,
00:44:17certainly much sooner than Edgerton James had expected.
00:44:20Hunter Smith pinned back.
00:44:21He'll accept his snap at his own two.
00:44:25Troy Brown winning at his own 38.
00:44:29High punt, indoors here at the RCA Dome,
00:44:31and Brown's got some room to work with.
00:44:33From the 31, Brown,
00:44:35cutting it upfield like a locomotive to the 40.
00:44:38Justin Snow, the snapper, made the stop on special teams
00:44:42after the 52-yard punt.
00:44:44New England, 14-3 over Indy, looking for the sweep.
00:44:53Tom Brady today, a perfect 5-of-5,
00:44:56throwing the football 123 yards in the long 91-yard touchdown
00:45:00to David Patton.
00:45:02New England, 14, Indianapolis, 3,
00:45:05and the Patriots once again have excellent field position to start out
00:45:08with their own 4.
00:45:10Motion man is Patton.
00:45:12Brady, underneath, more razzle-dazzle,
00:45:15Patton looking deep, down the field,
00:45:17Troy Brown, touchdown!
00:45:20Who are these guys?
00:45:24Wow.
00:45:25The New England offense has exploded in Indy.
00:45:30And we said that the Patriots will come out in multiple formations,
00:45:34looking to do a number of different things.
00:45:36Last week, against the Chargers,
00:45:38they sneak in Brian Cox, that fullback,
00:45:40and sneak him out to the flat.
00:45:42He catches a pass, and now they come out
00:45:44with a lot of razzle-dazzle,
00:45:46and really catching this coach defense off guard.
00:45:48We talked about the coach defense having very young linebackers
00:45:51and guys who are learning on the job.
00:45:53They're going through some growing pains right now.
00:45:55Is that David Patton, or is it Jim Thorpe?
00:45:58He's thrown for a touchdown.
00:45:59He's run for a touchdown.
00:46:01And he's been on the receiving end of a touchdown.
00:46:04Adam Vinatieri, the extra point.
00:46:08Smile on the face of Drew Bledsoe.
00:46:11And the Patriots, 21-3 over Indianapolis.
00:46:16And Don Brady starts it off, just getting it to Patton.
00:46:18But Patton is poised, and he throws it perfect.
00:46:21He doesn't break stride on this.
00:46:23Troy Brown just runs right underneath,
00:46:25doesn't give time for any of the cornerbacks to make a play.
00:46:29They're just, David Macklin, he gets beat again.
00:46:32He's got to run and get on top of this.
00:46:35We think he's expecting help, but he was at man-to-man coverage.
00:46:38Troy Brown just races right by him,
00:46:40right into the end zone for the touchdown.
00:46:41Hey, remember Patton's professional roots, the Arena League.
00:46:46And he's been involved in some Arena League-like plays today.
00:46:49He's done some things, more than just running pass routes
00:46:52when you get into those kind of leagues
00:46:54where you're expected to do a number of different things,
00:46:56even play a little defense.
00:46:57Well, there you go.
00:46:59He can do it all, apparently.
00:47:01You have to give Charlie Weiss some credit.
00:47:03He knows what kind of players he has.
00:47:04He knows he doesn't have his most potent weapon in wide receiver Terry Glenn today.
00:47:08And coming up with other ways to manufacture big plays
00:47:11and create some opportunities for this offense to get the ball into the end zone.
00:47:15Now focus on the other side, though.
00:47:17This crowd is stunned.
00:47:19Indianapolis, offensively, we have seen Peyton Manning
00:47:23actually confused out there and befuddled at times.
00:47:26And defensively, clearly New England has now set the tempo
00:47:29with what they want to do on offense, and they've got the Colts back on their heels.
00:47:32And don't forget the way the Patriots have played on special teams,
00:47:35blocking two Mike VanderJagt kicks so far here in the ballgame.
00:47:39And Dominique Rhodes lost the football for a moment.
00:47:42And Rhodes is trying to run sideline, which was the wrong move.
00:47:46He's got to go forward.
00:47:47Another special teams faux pas by the Indianapolis Colts
00:47:51Jim Morris taking notes and keeping names here.
00:47:54It's going to be a long list.
00:47:55When you drop this ball, when you pick it up, you have to get going forward.
00:47:58Once you begin running laterally toward the sideline,
00:48:01you're allowing the pursuit to get on top of you.
00:48:04Right now, you're not gaining yards.
00:48:06All you're doing is saying, hey, guys, come and get me.
00:48:08And that's exactly what happens.
00:48:11Patrick Pass comes over to make sure he was down inside the 5.
00:48:16New England Patriots, two plays, 151 yards,
00:48:20taking up 22 seconds and two touchdowns.
00:48:23That's a quick strike.
00:48:24But you see they only took 22 seconds to do that.
00:48:27So it's a lot of football to be played.
00:48:29Didn't take much time.
00:48:30So you have to still maintain a high level of concentration
00:48:33to continue to make plays.
00:48:34Still have nearly seven minutes to go until halftime.
00:48:36James puts the helmet down and surges forward.
00:48:39Brian Cox meets him there for a gain of three.
00:48:42And he gets it out to the 5-yard line.
00:48:44I talked to Peyton Manning.
00:48:45I said, what happened in week three when you guys just got drilled by the Patriots?
00:48:50He said, you know what?
00:48:51They got out on top of us really quick from there.
00:48:53We were battling back.
00:48:54It's really tough to run your offense when you're down by more than 10 points
00:48:58and 14 points and today right now down by 17.
00:49:02So you can see they're having some problems.
00:49:0418, excuse me.
00:49:05Numbers on Manning, 9 and 15.
00:49:08Points are happening pretty quickly, Simon.
00:49:10Don't worry about it.
00:49:12Underneath.
00:49:13Curling it inside and Marvin Harrison,
00:49:15that's his first touch since the big pass play in the first quarter.
00:49:19And Harrison's got a 13-yard gain.
00:49:21That's a first down.
00:49:23Harrison's getting up a little slow.
00:49:25I think he was a little dinged up on the long pass reception in the first quarter.
00:49:30So they're going to have to get Marvin Harrison going.
00:49:33They're going to have to get the rookie, Reggie Wayne,
00:49:34and there's going to be a number of players if the Colts are going to get back
00:49:37into this football game.
00:49:38He's going to have to make some plays for Peyton Manning.
00:49:42First and 10 now.
00:49:43Ball is spotted at the 18-yard line.
00:49:47In motion, Dilger.
00:49:49And a handoff.
00:49:51Edrin James is met by Ted Johnson and driven back.
00:49:55Johnson, who was very active last week,
00:49:58the most active that he's been defensively so far this season because of injuries,
00:50:02getting involved in that play and meeting Edrin James head on.
00:50:05And there you see Ted Johnson.
00:50:07Look at the speed.
00:50:08He's getting out in front of the line and is able to get into the hole,
00:50:11head up on Edrin James.
00:50:13I can't tell you, that's just speed of a linebacker.
00:50:16Defeating blocks and getting in the hole,
00:50:18putting his hand on the ball carrier and making the tackle.
00:50:20Ted Johnson is a wonderful player.
00:50:22Seventh year out of Colorado.
00:50:24He's been a high-performing player when he's been healthy.
00:50:28On second and 12, underneath.
00:50:31James breaking a tackle, struggling the sideline
00:50:33and spinning his way across the 40-yard line.
00:50:36So Edrin James, in what could have been a modest play,
00:50:39or maybe even a loss, turned it into a five-yard gain and a great catch to boot.
00:50:44We talk about players needing to make some plays for Peyton Manning.
00:50:46This is a poorly thrown ball, and Edrin has to come all the way back.
00:50:50He's able to get it with one hand and then able to elude would-be tacklers.
00:50:54Gloria Malloy and Roman Pfeiffer are able to create an additional gain on the play.
00:51:00Call a third and seven, 21-yard line, the line of scrimmage.
00:51:04We're down to 427 and counting left until halftime.
00:51:08On a three-receiver set.
00:51:11Manning out of the shotgun, Harrison in motion.
00:51:14Pumphrey, Manning, still looking.
00:51:17Manning, he gets one, gets rid of a football, and has a first down.
00:51:22He found the safety valve there, James,
00:51:24but Peyton Manning just got crushed from both sides.
00:51:28Anthony Pleasant and Willie McGinnis.
00:51:31And the pressure has been there all day on Manning.
00:51:33He hasn't had much time to throw the ball, and they're starting to get some hits on him.
00:51:38Pleasant here to be holding his knee.
00:51:41He hit Manning pretty hard.
00:51:43Manning's coming over to the sideline.
00:51:45He's a little dazed as well.
00:51:47They're hitting from the blind side.
00:51:49Good hit on Manning, but Manning's doing a good job of hanging in there,
00:51:52holding in the pocket, waiting for someone to get open,
00:51:55but they're coming with a delayed rush.
00:51:58Pleasant, Roman Pfeiffer coming in, just closing right in on the quarterback.
00:52:02You'll see the hit right in the back.
00:52:04And then bang.
00:52:05And then bang right in the front.
00:52:06Pleasant, his knee just buckles as he comes in from the front side.
00:52:09Willie McGinnis coming in from the back side.
00:52:11I tell you what, Solomon, that might be as hard a hit as Peyton Manning has taken at this level
00:52:16because Indianapolis, since they drafted him, focused on getting Peyton protectors up front.
00:52:22In 97, the Colts gave up the most sacks in the National Football League,
00:52:2662 sacks.
00:52:27Ever since then, they've given up the fewest sacks for every year
00:52:30Peyton Manning has been in the National Football League.
00:52:33I think it's largely in part due to his ability to recognize the defense
00:52:37and get rid of the ball very quickly.
00:52:39Well, similar to the comparison you made to Marino earlier,
00:52:42I don't know if the Miami offensive line during those days was the best in the NFL,
00:52:46but they always had consistently great numbers because Marino got rid of the football quickly.
00:52:51You have a quarterback who can recognize defenses,
00:52:53and he knows where his hot read is going to be.
00:52:55He's able to, I think, process the information fairly quickly and get rid of the ball.
00:53:00You're going to make your offensive line that much better.
00:53:02That's what Peyton Manning has given this Colts offense.
00:53:04Now I think he needs his skill position players to play up to that same level
00:53:08and read what he's reading when they're looking at the defense
00:53:11and be able to get open and be ready to make receptions.
00:53:13Remember the durability of Manning, James, Harrison.
00:53:17They don't miss football games.
00:53:19That's the bottom line.
00:53:21Peyton took the hit.
00:53:22He's back out on the field on a pitch.
00:53:24Edron James loses the football.
00:53:27New England recovers.
00:53:28Teddy Brewski.
00:53:31What more can go wrong for Indianapolis today?
00:53:35Ted Johnson knocked it loose.
00:53:39One thing after another has gone wrong for the Indianapolis Colts,
00:53:43and you have to be able to trust your primetime player, Edron James, with the football.
00:53:49But Ted Johnson, once again, he's a missile.
00:53:51Just come in and knocks the ball loose.
00:53:54Teddy Brewski comes in and recovers the fumble.
00:53:57Patriots have a huge opportunity, but watch Ted Johnson, number 52,
00:54:01comes over, gets his left hand on the football, knocks it out.
00:54:04Brewski's just hustling for the football, I think,
00:54:06with a little bit more effort than Edron James.
00:54:09New England takes over on a first down and rumbling up the middle, Mark Edwards.
00:54:15Ten-yard gain for Edwards up the gut.
00:54:19This was in week three when the Colts visit the Patriots,
00:54:22but you see Edron James will take the catch and he'll fumble the ball once again right here.
00:54:27Turned out to be a costly turnover.
00:54:29Once again, Ted Johnson involved in the recovery.
00:54:33Edron James doesn't fumble the ball much,
00:54:35but so far in two games against the Patriots he's coughed the ball up,
00:54:39giving the Patriots a huge opportunity here.
00:54:42On first down, Antoine Smith, Indianapolis, came over to pursue him.
00:54:46And Smith, with that second effort, remained on his feet.
00:54:49Josh Williams, first man there.
00:54:51Solomon, the word that comes to mind, though,
00:54:53and it's a word that was talked about by Ellis Johnson.
00:54:57We asked him what happened back in week three.
00:54:59What did he tell us?
00:55:00He said, we were thrashed.
00:55:02How many times did he use that word?
00:55:03That word came up quite often.
00:55:04Double digits.
00:55:05That's right.
00:55:06Ten or eleven times he said, we were thrashed.
00:55:09Ellis Johnson, he said, it was a matter of pride.
00:55:11He said, our pride was really insulted.
00:55:14They had planned on coming out today and seeking some revenge.
00:55:17So far today it hasn't been the case because they're getting thrashed again.
00:55:20Absolutely.
00:55:21The word is operative once again.
00:55:22Second and eleven after the loss of one.
00:55:25And again for Smith.
00:55:27And Smith, again remaining on his feet.
00:55:30Antoine Smith, who had a terrific second effort in his touchdown run last week
00:55:34against San Diego.
00:55:35He picks up four yards with Marcus Washington,
00:55:37the second-year pro out of Auburn, making that tackle.
00:55:40Time trickling away here.
00:55:4221-3, New England leading Indianapolis.
00:55:45And this is where the coach defense has to make a play.
00:55:48You've seen the Patriots defense have made a number of plays,
00:55:51but so have their special teams.
00:55:53I think the coach defense is going to have to do something to come up big.
00:55:56We've hit the two-minute warning here in Indy.
00:55:59It's been dominant just like three weeks ago.
00:56:02New England, 21-3.
00:56:06Coming up, Nexdell Halftime Report.
00:56:09Jim, Mike, Randy, and Jerry will have all the scores and highlights
00:56:12in the latest NFL News Plus CBS News update.
00:56:15America on guard.
00:56:16That's coming up.
00:56:17The Nexdell Halftime Report.
00:56:19This Colts football team has just been stunned.
00:56:23Everyone's trying to figure out what's going on.
00:56:26They appear to be unraveling on all phases of the football game.
00:56:30Offense making mistakes on special teams as well as defense.
00:56:34J.R. Redman is now in the game on a 3rd and 8th.
00:56:38Brady straight back.
00:56:39Brady throws it to the sideline.
00:56:41First down throw inside the 5, Detroit Brown.
00:56:45They'll have it first and goal.
00:56:48And a chance to add to their lead.
00:56:52Tom Brady has just been doing everything right on offense
00:56:56and leading his team at the quarterback position.
00:56:59Many people fear that with the injury to Drew Bledsoe
00:57:02that this offense and this football team would pretty much come apart.
00:57:05Drew Bledsoe having thrown for over 3,000 yards for 7 consecutive seasons.
00:57:10So he's contributed so much to this offense.
00:57:12But you can see Tom Brady's just been red hot.
00:57:146 for 6, 132 yards.
00:57:16The key for a young quarterback.
00:57:18No interceptions.
00:57:19Making really good decisions from that position.
00:57:22And you know what, Solomon?
00:57:23No pressure on it.
00:57:25Indianapolis has not applied pressure in the pocket.
00:57:29Play clock is inoperative.
00:57:32This will also be kept on the field.
00:57:35So we've now lost the play clock in addition to the game clock.
00:57:39We didn't have the game clock from the start,
00:57:40but the play clock was working earlier.
00:57:42Both are now dark.
00:57:45And we'll try to keep you abreast as best we can.
00:57:50It just popped on.
00:57:52But they took care of that.
00:57:56It'll be a first and goal inside the 5.
00:58:00Remember, Brian Cox checked in last week as a fullback.
00:58:07And Brian Cox is on the field once again.
00:58:11Once again, offensive coordinator Charlie Weiss drawing it up.
00:58:14Trying to keep this defense off balance.
00:58:17And right now someone in the coach's defensive huddle has got to be saying,
00:58:21hey, recognition.
00:58:22You have to see Cox is in the game.
00:58:24He did catch a pass last week.
00:58:25But you can't just go running over to number 51,
00:58:27allow someone else to come over.
00:58:29It works as a perfect decoy possibility as well.
00:58:32Now they have to at least respect it.
00:58:34It keeps the defense honest after he caught a pass last week
00:58:37in the win over San Diego.
00:58:39And the good offensive coordinators in the National Football League
00:58:41has a way of keeping defenses off balance.
00:58:44You can create some mode of doubt in the mind of a defense
00:58:48if your chance to make a play.
00:58:50Up the middle.
00:58:51Leaping forward Antoine Smith.
00:58:54But well short of the goal line.
00:58:55A gain of one.
00:58:58Here's Brian Cox.
00:58:59He's going to hit it up in there.
00:59:00You know he can do it because he's a linebacker.
00:59:03He loves hitting people.
00:59:04And here he just comes right up.
00:59:05Doesn't move the foul too much,
00:59:07but certainly creates some room for the runner.
00:59:10Brian Cox gets knocked back the other way.
00:59:13When he met us for our meetings yesterday,
00:59:15I didn't want to shake his hand too hard.
00:59:16He's got the sensitive hands now of a fullback.
00:59:19He's a receiver now.
00:59:20He's a receiver.
00:59:21He can catch the ball.
00:59:23And a second and goal.
00:59:24Play action.
00:59:25Brady throwing.
00:59:26To the end zone.
00:59:27Touchdown, Jermaine Wiggins.
00:59:30Deja vu.
00:59:31Wiggins had a three-yard touchdown last week
00:59:34to force the game into overtime.
00:59:36He's got himself a touchdown here today,
00:59:38and this is a lopsided first half.
00:59:41New England in front.
00:59:42And again, Cox was out in the flat as the decoy,
00:59:45Rob Morris, forced to come up to defend against Cox.
00:59:49Tom Brady very poised.
00:59:52You see Cox is out in front.
00:59:54Rob Morris allows Wiggins to get open in the back of the end zone,
00:59:58but very good poise by the young quarterback on the touchdown.
01:00:02Extra point.
01:00:03Adam Vinatieri to off of the edge when James fumbled.
01:00:07The recovery from Bruschi,
01:00:09and then the New England offense turns it into seven.
01:00:12Tom Brady and the Pats lead it 28-3.
01:00:1828-3.
01:00:20New England leading Indianapolis with a minute 15 to go until halftime.
01:00:24And don't forget, the Nextel Halftime Report is coming up.
01:00:27Jim, Mike, Randy, and Jerry will have all the scores and highlights
01:00:30in the latest NFL news plus a CBS News update.
01:00:33America on guard.
01:00:34That's coming up on the Nextel Halftime Report.
01:00:37Tom Brady is 7-of-7, throwing the football 134 yards.
01:00:42Two touchdowns.
01:00:44Who was your star in the first half?
01:00:46You can pick any one of a number of players.
01:00:48Patton has been incredible.
01:00:50A rush for a touchdown, 29 yards.
01:00:52A catch for a touchdown, 91 yards.
01:00:55And a throw for a touchdown to Troy Brown.
01:00:59Dominique Rhodes will take a knee off the kickoff.
01:01:05And they'll take it out to the 20.
01:01:07Coming up tonight.
