Would you believe me if I told you that a Player of the Match was given to a player who didn't score a run, take a wicket or a catch? In the opening game of the Coca-Cola Cup at Harare in 2001, West Indies scored 266/5 against Zimbabwe, helped by half-centuries of Darren Ganga, Chris Gayle, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
The West Indies bowlers did a decent job, picking wickets at regular intervals and not allowing any significant partnership to blossom. However, they were a bit expensive, considering that particular match. It was Cameron Cuffy, who tied the hands of the batters, giving away just 20 runs in his quota of 10 overs, and bowling 2 maidens. Although he did not pick any wickets, Cuffy’s spell swung the game in favour of the Caribbeans, giving them a victory by 27 runs.
