Don Bradman came heartbreakingly close to scoring his second triple-century in the 4th Australia South Africa test at Adelaide in 1932. With just two runs needed to reach the milestone, he was left batting with Pud Thurlow, the number 11, who was yet to score. On the last ball of the 138th over, Bradman played a stroke to the leg side, sprinted for one, and turned for a second – but Thurlow, already charging down, could not make it back in time. He was run out, leaving Bradman stranded on 299 not out. To this day, Bradman remains the only cricketer to score 299 not out.
