92- Ruling on the green dome on the grave of the Prophet (ﷺ) (1)
Q: We learnt from Shaykh Abdul-'Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz that domes and other buildings on graves are impermissible. So, what is the ruling on the green dome found on the grave of the Noble Messenger (ﷺ) in Al-Madināh Al-Munawwarah?
A: There is no doubt that the Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited building on graves and cursed the Jews and the Christians for taking the graves as places of worship. He (peace be upon him) said: May Allāh curse the Jews and the Christians as they took the graves of their prophets as places of worship) The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said in a Hadith that was related by Muslim in his Sahih on the authority of Jabir (may Allāh be pleased with him) that he prohibited plastering graves as well as sitting and building on them. In another version narrated by Al-Tirmidhy and others, the Prophet (ﷺ) also prohibited writing on the graves. It is prohibited to build on graves and take them as places of worship. The Prophet (ﷺ) warned us against that. His command was accepted by the scholars and they forbade people from doing that in implementation of the pure Sunnah (whatever reported from the Prophet). Nevertheless, we find people in many countries building on graves, taking them as places of worship and building domes on them as well. All this contradicts the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him) and is counted among the gravest means that lead to Shirk (associating others with Allāh in His Divinity or worship) and exceeding proper limits with regard to the dead. Hence, no Muslim should be deceived and imitate such people in what they do because people's acts are judged by the Qur`an and the Sunnah; whatever agrees with them or one of them will be accepted, otherwise, it will be rejected. Allāh (Exalted be He) says: And in whatsoever you differ, the decision thereof is with Allāh (He is the ruling Judge).) Allāh (Glorified and Exalted be He) says as well: (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allāh and His Messenger ﷻ. As regards the green dome found on the grave of the Prophet (ﷺ), it is something that was newly introduced by some of the rulers in Al-Madināh Al-Munawwarah in the late ninth century. Undoubtedly, they were mistaken and what they did indicates their ignorance. This was not done, however, during the lifetime of the Prophet (ﷺ) or during the era of his Companions and their two successive generations. Rather, it took place in later centuries when ignorance was rampant, knowledge was scarce and Bid`ah (innovation in religion) was widespread. Hence, Muslims should not be deceived by this and should not take it as an example to follow. Probably those who ruled Al-Madināh and the Muslims left it that way for fear of Fitnah (temptation, trial, sedition) that might be aroused by some of the common people. 00:00What is the meaning of the Qibla?
00:04As for the listeners of Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, they say,
00:08after the long life of Shaykh Abdul Aziz has been requested,
00:15and that this life should be full of obedience to Allah and the benefit of Muslims in general,
00:20they say, we have learned from the words of Shaykh Abdul Aziz Ibn Baiz,
00:24that the building and the Qibla on the graves are not allowed.
00:27What is the ruling of the Qibla on the grave of the Prophet, peace be upon him, in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah?
00:34In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
00:36All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah,
00:39and upon his family, his companions, and those who follow his guidance.
00:42As for the following, there is no doubt that the Prophet, peace be upon him,
00:47forbade the building of graves, and cursed the Jews and the Christians for setting up mosques on them.
00:57He, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
00:59Allah will curse the Jews and the Christians for setting up mosques on the graves of His Prophets.
01:03He, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
01:05as narrated by Muslim al-Sahih al-Jabir,
01:08that he forbade the setting up of graves and the building on them.
01:16There is a narration in the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
01:22that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
01:24forbade the setting up of graves and the setting up of mosques on them.
01:28This is one of the prohibitions that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
01:33warned against.
01:35The people of knowledge received what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said about this.
01:42The people of knowledge have forbidden the setting up of graves and the setting up of mosques on them.
01:46This is an implementation of the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
01:51Nevertheless, in many countries and countries,
02:00the setting up of graves and the setting up of mosques on them has been found.
02:07All of this is contrary to the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
02:12It is one of the greatest means of setting up polytheism and adultery in the graves.
02:19It is not appropriate for a rational person,
02:24nor for any Muslim,
02:26to incite such people
02:28and to be affected by what they have done.
02:32Because the deeds of people are presented in the Book and in the Sunnah.
02:39Whoever agrees with the Book and the Sunnah,
02:43or agrees with one of them,
02:45accept it.
02:46Otherwise, respond to what has happened.
02:49As Allah, the Exalted, said,
02:53Allah, the Exalted, said,
03:01As for the issue of the Green Dome,
03:05which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
03:08this is something that happened to some princes in Medina
03:12in the later periods,
03:14in the 9th century or around it.
03:16There is no doubt that it is wrong and ignorant of it.
03:22This did not happen in the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
03:26nor in the time of his companions,
03:28nor in the time of his favorite generations.
03:30Rather, it happened in the later periods,
03:32in which there was a lot of ignorance and a lack of knowledge.
03:35And there was a lot of creativity.
03:37So, one should not be influenced by this,
03:40nor should one be influenced by this.
03:43And perhaps whoever took over Medina
03:46from the kings and the princes,
03:50the emirs and the Muslims,
03:53they left that out of fear of sedition from the general public.
03:57They left that out,
03:59and they were satisfied with that for the duration of the sedition.
04:03Because some people are not very perceptive.
04:06They might say,
04:08they changed and did this and that before the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
04:12So, they were seduced.
04:14There is no need for their sedition,
04:16and it may harm their sedition.
04:18So, they left that out of fear of sedition from the general public.
04:21They left that out of fear of sedition from the general public.
04:24They left that out of fear of sedition from the general public.
04:27They left that out of fear of sedition from the general public.
04:30They left that out of fear of sedition from the general public.
04:33They left that out of fear of sedition from the general public.
04:36They left that out of fear of sedition from the general public.
04:39They left that out of fear of sedition from the general public.
04:42They left that out of fear of sedition from the general public.
04:45The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
04:48was seduced with all kinds of excuses.
04:51They accused him of seducing the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
04:54or that he seduced the saints,
04:56or that he did not see his mercy,
04:58or something like that.
05:00This is falsehood.
05:02Otherwise, there is no doubt that the one who did it was wrong.
05:05Otherwise, there is no doubt that the one who did it was wrong.
05:08The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
05:11was given permission to build graves and to build mosques.
05:14He was buried in the house of Aisha.
05:17He was buried in the house of Aisha.
05:20The Companions, peace and blessings be upon them,
05:23were afraid that he would be buried in Al-Baqiyah because of sedition.
05:26So, they buried him in the house of Aisha.
05:29Then, his two companions, Siddiq and Omar, peace and blessings be upon them,
05:32were buried in the house of Aisha.
05:35Then, his two companions, Siddiq and Omar, peace and blessings be upon them,
05:38were buried in the house of Aisha.
05:41Then, when the mosque was expanded in the time of Ibn Malik,
05:44at the end of the first century,
05:47the mosques were expanded.
05:50Some people, who do not know,
05:53think that the Prophet was buried in the mosque.
05:56This is not the case.
05:59He, peace and blessings be upon him,
06:02was buried in the house of Aisha, outside the mosque.
06:05He was buried in the house of Aisha, outside the mosque.
06:08No mosque should be built on a grave.
06:11The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
06:14was afraid of this.
06:17So, he cursed the Jews and the Christians
06:20because they were buried in the mosques.
06:23He was buried in the house of Aisha, outside the mosque.
06:26He was buried in the house of Aisha, outside the mosque.
06:29He was buried in the house of Aisha, outside the mosque.
06:32The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
06:35said,
06:38Allah has taken me as a friend,
06:41as he took Ibrahim as a friend.
06:44If you had taken a friend from my nation,
06:47you would have taken your forefathers as friends.
06:50Those who were before you,
06:53used to take mosques from the graves of their prophets.
06:56Do not take mosques.
07:00So, he cursed those who took mosques from the graves of their prophets.
07:03So, he cursed those who took mosques from the graves of their prophets.
07:06He forbade them to do so in two ways.
07:09First, he said, do not take mosques.
07:12Second, he said, I forbid you to do so.
07:15This is an exaggeration in prohibition and determination
07:18from him, peace and blessings be upon him,
07:21in three ways.
07:24First, he cursed those who took mosques from the graves of their prophets.
07:28Second, he said, do not take mosques.
07:31Third, he said,
07:34I forbid you to do so.
07:37This is an exaggeration in prohibition and determination.
07:40In the hadith of Aisha, he said,
07:43Allah has cursed the Jews and the Christians
07:46who took mosques from the graves of their prophets.
07:49This is a warning for us and for every Muslim
07:52and for everyone who understands
07:55that taking mosques from the graves of their prophets
07:58is against the Shariah of Allah,
08:01which his prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, brought.
08:04And that it is unlawful.
08:07And that it is a violation of religion.
08:10And that it is one of the ways of polytheism.
08:13Therefore, when the public and the ignorant
08:16saw that the graves of the prophets were glorified
08:19with mosques, Qifab, Dinar and Qurush,
08:22and that it was a way of healing the sick,
08:25they called upon it and asked for its forgiveness.
08:28And they did not go to it, and they fell into polytheism because of this.
08:31So, it is obligatory on the people of knowledge and faith,
08:34wherever they are,
08:37to warn people of these evils.
08:40And to show them that building on the graves
08:43is a bad invention.
08:46And so Qifab and the mosques were built
08:49on the graves of the prophets.
08:52And that it is one of the ways of polytheism.
08:55So that the public and the ignorant
08:58would know that these things happened
09:01after the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
09:04and after his companions, may Allah be pleased with them,
09:07and after the favorite generations.
09:10So that they would beware of it.
09:13And so that they would stay away from it.
09:16And to visit the graves of the prophets
09:19is to visit them for their peace.
09:22And to pray for them and to have mercy on them.
09:25Not to pray for them and to ask them to fulfill their needs.
09:28And to say to them,
09:31this is polytheism with Allah.
09:34And it is obligatory with Allah.
09:37But the ignorant and the polytheists
09:40changed visiting the graves of the prophets
09:43from visiting the graves of the prophets
09:46to visiting the graves of the polytheists.
09:49And one of the reasons for this change
09:52and for this polytheism and innovation
09:55is the existence of these buildings,
09:58the Qifab, the mosques, and the graves.
10:01And one of the reasons for this is the silence
10:04of the scholars about this.
10:07Either it is guided by the Shariah
10:10or it is guided by the public.
10:13And there is no need for them to talk about it
10:16unless they see that it is their right to do so.
10:19And to deny those who deny them.
10:22Or for other reasons.
10:25So it is obligatory for the scholars
10:28to explain to the people
10:31what Allah has forbidden them.
10:34And to explain to them what Allah has given them.
10:37And to explain to them what Allah has given them.
10:40And to prevent them from polytheism
10:43and its causes and means.
10:46For the public is in their wrongdoing
10:49and Allah has given them the message and the statement
10:52and has forbidden them the Qifab.
10:55Yes.
10:56Yes.
10:57The monotheistic monotheism
11:00mentioned in the Quran.
11:03The monotheistic monotheism
11:06is the monotheistic monotheism.
