00:00Leaders struck a deal late on Thursday evening, endorsing Germany's Ursula von der Leyen
00:04for a second five-year term as the head of the European Commission.
00:08The agreement also nominated Caja Callas, the Prime Minister of Estonia, as the bloc's
00:13next top diplomat, and Tad Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa to head the European
00:18Council.
00:19All three nominees hail from the centrist alliance that dominated the EU Parliament
00:23following elections this month.
00:26Dave Keating reports from Brussels on what happens next.
00:30One of those jobs takes effect immediately.
00:34That is Antonio Costa, who will chair the summits of the 27 prime ministers and presidents.
00:40Then the job for Caja Callas, who will represent the EU's foreign policy positions, that's
00:45subject to confirmation hearings in the autumn by the European Parliament.
00:49And the reappointment of President von der Leyen is also subject to a confirmation vote
00:54by the European Parliament.
00:55She'll need a majority in a vote on the 17th of July in Strasbourg.
01:00The three centrist groups should give her enough in order to be confirmed.
01:04However, that's a secret ballot, and there's some concern that some members of those three
01:08centrist groups might secretly defect.
01:11So she may go to other groups for support, most likely the Greens, to try to make sure
01:16there's no risk that she doesn't survive that majority vote.
01:19Then following that, the European countries will nominate people to serve as commissioners
01:24in her cabinet.
01:25They will go through confirmation hearings in the autumn and will get a final vote on
01:29the whole Commission College at the end of the year.
01:31And then the new term of lawmaking will start.
01:34Now, last night did not go off without a hitch.
01:36Far-right Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Maloney, voted against Costa and Callas and
01:42abstained in the vote on von der Leyen.
01:45She's upset that her far-right ECR group, which came third in the European Parliament
01:50election earlier this month, becoming the third largest group in the Parliament, not
01:54only was not given any top job, but also she herself was excluded from the early negotiations
02:00negotiating this package.
02:02So she made her displeasure quite clear last night.
