00:00Your playoff losses don't feel as bad as choking a 3-0 lead in the Stanley Cup final.
00:05Oh, not even close.
00:08I think I saw it on Reddit or something.
00:10Even if the Panthers go on a revenge tour next year and win the cup,
00:14you still don't bounce back.
00:15You win a cup in six games next year.
00:17It doesn't absolve you blowing a lead like this on this stage.
00:30And welcome into the Bruins Beat.

00:46Terms apply.
00:47I am Evan Maranofsky.
00:48That is Connor Ryan.
00:49Connor, what is up?
00:51Evan, I'm doing well.
00:52How are you doing?
00:53Doing great.
00:54I'm refreshed after a week away.
00:56Nice vacation in the Cape.
00:58Just right down.
00:59Just in through the nose, out through the mouth.
01:02You go to Pirate's Cove in Yameth?
01:05I did not.
01:05I did not.
01:06So we stay at like a...
01:08It's a family vacation.
01:09We rent a place that's like on the ocean.
01:13And so we don't really leave ever.
01:15Like I got my car twice.
01:16You go to Wellfleet?
01:17You go to the drive-in?
01:18What do you...
01:19It's Mayflower.
01:20It's Mayflower and Chapin.
01:22We're like in between.
01:24So it's nice.
01:26Tide goes out like half a mile.
01:28So you know when the tide goes out,
01:29you got to get the steps in,
01:31go all the way to the water.
01:32But it's fun.
01:33I'm actually...
01:34I don't know what it is about the beach
01:37but I can crank out books at the beach.
01:40Just destroy it because there's nothing else to do.
01:42Like I can't just sit and stare at the water all day.
01:45There's only so much you can do.
01:47I'm not really a huge beach guy.
01:48And that's kind of the reason why is that I'll go for like 40 minutes
01:52and then I'm like,
01:53I'm ready to go inside and I'm ready for some AC.
01:55I'm ready for some AC and mingling and having a few beers inside
01:58somewhere where it's climate controlled.
02:01That's that.
02:01I respect that.
02:03It's probably a rough take.
02:04It's probably a rough look for me.
02:06It means I just don't have enough patience to soak in the moment.
02:09But I already fry like a lobster anyway.
02:12So.
02:13So do I.
02:13It's only so much I can do.
02:14So do I.
02:15Yeah.
02:15I have some bad sunburns under the shirt.
02:18But I'm going to keep the shirt on on this episode.
02:20I'm not going to take the shirt off quite yet.
02:22We're not there yet.
02:23When the Bruins trade for dry saddle, then we'll change some things around.
02:27And then it's all going to go off the rails.
02:28But this shirt's come off.
02:30Yeah, it's going to magically come off.
02:33We're going to be blasted LMFAO the entire time.
02:36You can't even hear us talking.
02:37It's just Party Rock Anthem just playing on a loop the entire time.
02:41I think that would be great.
02:43I know that would work.
02:44I think people would love that.
02:47No, I think people would love that.
02:49But it was good.
02:50I actually am almost done with Ken Dryden's The Game,
02:54which I had a parent come up to me this winter and say,
02:58have you read that book?
02:59And I said, no.
02:59And he goes, you've got to read it.
03:00I remember being like, nah, that's just some old guy telling the young generation to do it.
03:05Actually, really good book.
03:06I highly recommend it.
03:07It's been a great read if you're interested in that.
03:10You had quite the end of the week last week.
03:12You were on a duck boat.
03:14How was that?
03:14I was shocked when I opened Twitter and your Instagram story and saw the duck boat.
03:20And I was just fascinated by it.
03:22I will say, I'll preface, it was not a duck boat.
03:25It was a modified Ford F-150 with the open...
03:27Even better.
03:29Yeah.
03:29Even better.
03:30So they didn't put us on a duck boat.
03:31But yes, I was very fortunate to be on one of the media trucks where they pretty much just put you
03:37in the back, they strap you in, and you're able to take in the crowd, get some video.
03:41I got some awesome video, the whole thing.
03:44Check something off the bucket list.
03:45Unreal.
03:45The crowd was awesome.
03:47I think they said there's about a million people in town that day.
03:50It was great too.
03:51I was kind of worried.
03:52And it was a few times really early on where we'd turn and we'd go down Cambridge Street,
03:57and people would be like, woo!
03:58And they'd see me like, who the fuck is this?
04:01But then it quickly dissipated.
04:03Yeah.
04:03I think enough people were already, I think, had ingested enough libations at that point
04:10that it didn't matter if it was a stuffed moose on that boat, on that car.
04:16People would be losing their minds.
04:18Got a lot of great video.
04:20Crowd was into it.
04:22It doesn't get old.
04:23I think that's the most important thing, right?
04:24Is your 13th title this century.
04:30It just shows that as much as we've, I think, gotten maybe used to it, it still feels great.
04:36It's still awesome.
04:36Great to see that team kind of get over the hump, win.
04:39Doesn't matter.
04:40I know this is a Bruins podcast, but we all love Boston sports.
04:43And I think to see that group finally win, see the city celebrate again, feels good.
04:48Feels back to normal.
04:49Feels like things are as they should be in this city, right?
04:53What was it?
04:53Five and a half years?
04:54Yeah.
04:55A long drought.
04:56That was a drought.
04:57It was drought.
04:58It's over now.
04:59So now the clock can restart.
05:03Yeah.
05:03I mean, it was awesome to see them win.
05:04It was so funny to see.
05:05So did anybody throw anything at you?
05:07Did anybody recognize you?
05:08There was one.
05:10I was tagged in a few Instagram stories of people I know growing up would be like, what?
05:16Holy shit.
05:17What the fuck is he doing on that thing?
05:18What are you doing out there?
05:20Yeah, exactly.
05:21So there's that.
05:22Someone did throw a thing of Dr.
05:24McGillicuddy's.
05:25That was the one thing we got.
05:26There wasn't a no Miller Lite cans.
05:30Nothing hit us.
05:32Shout out Amit from CLNS.
05:34He was on the same one as me.
05:35He had his hot hat on from the Garden Report.
05:38And I know that he has one on anyway, because it's part of the...
05:41I know they've got those hot hats for their podcast anyway.
05:46But you're well equipped.
05:47If there's a Keystone Lite flying at your head, you're all set.
05:50If it's me, I had nothing on.
05:52So just hitting your noggin.
05:54Yeah, exactly.
05:55Would you guys take the McGillicuddy shots?
05:58No, absolutely not.
05:59No.
06:01One, I don't even like Dr. McGillicuddy's.
06:04And two, you can have me just ripping my Boston rowback polo, just ripping Dr.
06:10McGillicuddy's on the thing.
06:11I had to get that content, Evan.
06:12I had to get all that 4K.
06:14Dude, I got about 45 minutes of footage on my phone through like...
06:19I did the 4K setting.
06:22My phone...
06:22You know that GIF of the orangutan who's hooked up to the ventilator and he's like...
06:28That was my iPhone.
06:29My iPhone was screaming into the abyss to Tim Cook to save him,
06:33because he was going through hell recording 4K video for 45 minutes.
06:38It was like that along the lines of monkeys.
06:42It was like that picture of the dude with the hand on the monkey's back,
06:45as he throws up all over the wall.
06:47That was your phone.
06:48It was just spent.
06:49It was done.
06:50It was done.
06:50Yes.
06:51But he trucked through.
06:52He's a good soldier.
06:54Good for him.
06:54He's still intact, so we're good.
06:56That's awesome.
06:57Boy, that looked really fun.
06:58It looked fun.
06:59That'd be funny if I looked at the phone and it was just like,
07:01oh, Mark has been traded.
07:02It was something like that.
07:03We're waiting for one of those days.
07:04We had that last year, Evan, with...
07:06People are probably like, wow, Evan's disengaged from what Connor is saying.
07:10But I'm looking at my phone, just kind of refreshing,
07:13because I got the new post notification, like Chris Johnston and Frank Cerebelli.
07:17Oh, oh, oh, Zach Hyman.
07:20Yeah.
07:20Yeah.
07:20It's a Zach Hyman quote about Game 7, which is Monday night.
07:24You'll probably hear this Tuesday.
07:27We can get in a cup talking a little bit.
07:29I want to talk mainly Omar in this episode, obviously.
07:32Just one last thought on the McGillicuddy nips.
07:34It would have been hilarious if you did take one.
07:36Like the Lone Bruins reporter that you're like,
07:38I'm never really covering the Celtics.
07:40I don't really care.
07:41Down the hatch.
07:42That would have been great.
07:43That would have been great.
07:44It would have set the tone.
07:46Video of Sam Houser puking in his...
07:49I think I saw that in his duck boat.
07:50He immediately pukes and goes up and goes...
07:55He's good.
07:56He's trucking through.
07:57He's a Wisconsin guy, so...
07:59Yeah, that goes down easy.
08:01It's part of the deal.
08:03Anyways, the Lena Solmark stuff.
08:06It's getting hot.
08:07The stove is hot.
08:08The Senators seem like the team.
08:10Lots of reporting out there about that.
08:15David Pagnotta from The Fourth Period had a story on Monday.
08:18Says, quote, lots of eyes are on the Senators this week.
08:21They've been very active on several fronts,
08:23including trying to land Lena Solmark from the Bruins.
08:25As I reported a few days ago,
08:27Omar is willing to waive his no trade clause for the Senators.
08:31They're currently on his 14 team no trade list.
08:34And if the two sides can reach an agreement on a contract extension,
08:37which he cannot officially sign until July 1,
08:39they should get to the finish line this week.
08:42So the Senators seem like the team,
08:43but there's also reporting that the Red Wings are interested.
08:46The Vegas Golden Knights are another team that is interested.
08:49Because of course they are.
08:50They can't fucking help themselves.
08:51They're in everybody.
08:52They're in everything.
08:53And the Maple Leafs are not.
08:55Omar would not go to the Maple Leafs,
08:57which I find hilarious.
08:58Of course.
09:00But where are you at with the Lena Solmark stuff?
09:03What are sort of your takeaways and thoughts at this time?
09:06I mean, it sure feels like someone's got to give, right?
09:08And I mean, it does seem like the general consensus,
09:12because I know David Pagnotta mentioned it.
09:15I know Dominic Tejano, who's fantastic at everything he does.
09:20He's mentioned that Omar has indicated that he'd be fine with a deal with Ottawa,
09:25which I think is probably the most surprising thing.
09:27Because I think when we talked about this the last couple of weeks,
09:30especially before the Devils made their moves,
09:32we're like, all right, Ottawa makes sense.
09:34We understand why they would want to get out of Lena Solmark.
09:37But does Lena Solmark want to go to Ottawa?
09:39It does seem like he's willing to not use that no trade protection for it.
09:45And again, I might come down to something else we've talked about,
09:48where again, is it the ideal spot?
09:50No.
09:51But if you're Lena Solmark,
09:52and you also have to look at that next contract,
09:55and a team like Ottawa is like,
09:57we'll sign you for seven years.
09:58We'll give you a pay bump because we desperately need you.
10:01I think maybe that's where you kind of see the forest over the trees,
10:04right, if you're Omar.
10:06If you're looking for security, financial security, especially,
10:10and as a team that, one, desperately needs a goal,
10:13and is willing to pay you,
10:14and seems like they're committed to getting better,
10:17at least, I don't think they're as stable of an organization as
10:21some of these other teams have been rumored to be in the mix for Omar.
10:24But if he's willing to waive that no trade clause
10:28and sign a long term deal,
10:31Ottawa probably gets you the best return, I would say,
10:34in terms of like if the Bruins are putting a premium on Omar,
10:38which they should, right?
10:39Like he's younger than Markstrom.
10:41He's better goalie than Markstrom.
10:44He's got an affordable cap at this year.
10:46And then you ideally, whoever gets him,
10:48gets rights to sign him long term moving forward.
10:52You should get a good return.
10:53And you look at what Ottawa can offer,
10:56whether that's players, whether that's picks in the first round,
11:00just seems like it's more of what the Bruins need right now.
11:03Like Vegas, I don't know what the hell they're doing.
11:08If you're looking for actual players,
11:10then maybe Vegas makes more sense.
11:13I couldn't even remotely guess.
11:14You can never guess with Vegas
11:15because they just trade guys on a whim, right?
11:18But what would they be offering?
11:20Are you looking at Shea Theodore,
11:24who I don't know if they're going to be able to afford him on his next contract?
11:27Are you looking at William Carlson?
11:29Are you looking at Thomas Hertel?
11:31Are they going to trade Thomas Hertel immediately after trading for him?
11:34That would be hilarious.
11:36They have guys that you'd probably covet,
11:39but I just don't know how feasible that is.
11:42And again, those are dangerous things to say about Vegas
11:45in terms of I don't know how feasible that is,
11:46because they'll do it anyway.
11:48But if Ottawa is the team that is willing to step up to the plate,
11:51and most importantly, Allmark is willing to waive that no trade clause,
11:56you can open the door to a lot of different things that help the Bruins.
11:59Let's face it, if they move Allmark and free up the cap space
12:03and put him in a spot where he can thrive as a number one
12:06and you carve out space for Swayman, you're in a good spot.
12:09You've got 5 million to work with.
12:10If you're able to then add a first round pick
12:14or an impact player or two on top of that,
12:16then you're rolling with house money, right?
12:17And it does seem like Ottawa,
12:19based on the fact that they have multiple first round picks,
12:21they've got guys like Chick Coren
12:23or maybe a younger forward or something like that,
12:25they have a lot of different ways to help out the Bruins
12:28and make the most out of moving an asset that maybe is expendable,
12:32but it doesn't mean the Bruins should be like,
12:33all right, here you go.
12:34Move on with this guy.
12:35This guy still has a lot of value in terms of
12:37what he can bring to a lot of different teams.
12:39Well, I think this is why they're driving the price up so much with the Senators.
12:42The Senators are an in-division team.
12:44And we mentioned this with the Maple Leafs.
12:47If you traded Allmark to Toronto, you are making them better,
12:50really good and a better shot at beating you in the playoffs.
12:54Now, Ottawa is not on the Leafs level.
12:57They're not really even close.
12:59But you give that team competent goaltending now,
13:02they're a bigger threat.
13:04Like, I think there will be, you know,
13:05if and when they do get Allmark,
13:07which it feels like it's only inevitable at this point,
13:09I think it is going to happen.
13:12They're a team that is in the mix,
13:14not to say that they are cup contenders or anything like that,
13:16but they're in the mix for a lot of points in the Atlantic
13:19and maybe a wildcard spot.
13:20And like, I think that improves them.
13:22I mean, their goaltending sucked last year.
13:26Horrible, horrible.
13:28So whether their defense is good in front of Lena Solmark or not,
13:31you're getting a severe upgrade, a good upgrade in net,
13:35and they're going to be better.
13:36And so I think the Bruins have that on their hand
13:38in terms of, you know, art of the deal type stuff of,
13:42hey, let's, you know, we're making you better,
13:44a divisional opponent.
13:46You got to cough some stuff up for this.
13:47And I think the Senators are desperate enough to do it.
13:50I always say, never count out how desperate a team can be
13:53when they need something.
13:56And you see it all the time.
13:57And I think, you know,
13:58the Senators are kind of falling in line with needing a goalie.
14:01And Lena Solmark is a fit and he would get a big payday,
14:04which I think is a big thing of what he wants.
14:06And as I say, Connor, go where you're wanted.
14:08And in Ottawa, I mean, he would be,
14:11I see Ottawa Senators fans all over Twitter being like,
14:13Steve Sayos, please get this done.
14:15Please do this because it would provide a legit,
14:18it would fill a need.
14:19In terms of packages in return,
14:21what we're looking for the Bruins to get,
14:24I want to get to that in a second.
14:26But first, a quick word for our friends over at PrizePix.

15:25How about that Jaron Duran, Rafi Devers,
15:28Tyler O'Neal looks like the real deal too.
15:30And I was a big PrizePix fan
15:32during the Celtics run to the NBA finals
15:34and not to brag, but I was a winner.
15:37Download the PrizePix app today

15:48Pick more, pick less, it's that easy.
15:51So in terms of a return, about a month ago,
15:54the Ottawa Sun had reported that an NHL executive
15:56had said that a return for Ol' Mark
15:58would be like Chikrin, their top first round pick.
16:02And then like another pick or a top prospect.
16:04And we kind of were like, oh my God,
16:06like if that's what it is, then you gotta do,
16:08you know, there's no way that could ever be it.
16:11Starting to feel like that actually might be it.
16:13And if the Bruins can somehow
16:15like in a trade package, get that.
16:16Chikrin, a top 10 pick in the NHL draft
16:20and, you know, a future pick or a second rounder
16:23or a top prospect.
16:24Like if that's the return, holy crap.
16:28Like that is satisfying a need now
16:32and that's satisfying future needs too.
16:34The question is, is that what it is?
16:36To me, I feel like it's gonna be a variation of that.
16:39I think it's gonna be, you know,
16:42what I've seen and what's been reported.
16:44It feels like it might come in a little less than that.
16:46You know, maybe a first and a prospect,
16:49maybe Chikrin and a future pick,
16:52but I don't know, maybe it is more than that.
16:53What do you think?
16:55Yeah, it's so tough to gauge, right?
16:56I mean, I don't think the Bruins
16:58are getting the number seven pick.
16:59Like unless like something has gone.
17:01Yeah, I don't see that as being again,
17:04like if you come away with players and the number 25
17:08and you get a first round pick
17:09and you're able to, you know,
17:10add to your prospect pool there, that'd be great.
17:13Like who knows, maybe it's concession.
17:14Would you want the number seven pick?
17:16Would you want 25 and player, right?
17:19Like that's maybe something you weigh there.
17:22But it does seem like if the Bruins are, you know,
17:25putting a high price out there for Omar,
17:28it does seem like a team that's desperate,
17:29like Ottawa is willing to pay for it.
17:32So if you're able to get like number 25,
17:35a guy like Chikrin and like another pick
17:37or like a prospect, like, you know,
17:40there's that forward Zach Ostabchuk,
17:43I think is how you say his name.
17:45Again, I don't think he's more of like a bottom six guy,
17:47but six, three hits, everything that moves a guy
17:51that ideally could, you know,
17:53fill out and be a key piece of your bottom six moving forward.
17:55Like maybe a player like that.
17:59That could be someone that if you're able to get a player,
18:01like Chikrin, a prospect or someone like that,
18:04that can fill in a need probably sooner rather than later.
18:08And like the number 25 pick,
18:09I think you're doing backflips for the Bruins.
18:12Oh, yeah.
18:13Yeah, I mean, you could make the case that
18:17even if the return is less than that,
18:18and like you take one of those things out of the equation,
18:21you're still coming away with house money,
18:22whether it's a first round pick, Chikrin,
18:26like again, like we talk about Chikrin,
18:27I think we've talked about him so much over the years
18:29that we kind of know what to expect from him.
18:31But as much as, you know, we've talked about the fact
18:34that Bruins need kind of a Brendan Dillon
18:37or, you know, Alec Martino, someone like that,
18:39like Chikrin would make your team better, man.
18:42You've got a top floor with Chikrin,
18:44with Chikrin, Lindholm, McAvoy, Kahlo,
18:47Laurie and Peake are your third pair.
18:49And like, again, we talk about cutting into Laurie's minutes,
18:53but it allows you to ease into Laurie's,
18:55you know, reps early on.
18:57Chikrin adds a lot of offense from the blue line,
19:00has a great shot.
19:00So I just think that, you know, if it's a guy like Chikrin,
19:05yes, is it a top six forward?
19:07Is it a top six center?
19:09No, but like, man, your decor gets a lot better.
19:12It helps out a guy like McAvoy if he's paired with him.
19:15It allows both McAvoy and even Lindholm
19:17to not really be that go-to offensive,
19:20you know, kind of conduit out there,
19:22which helps you out quite a bit.
19:24I think it just makes everyone better
19:25if you're able to get a guy like him.
19:27Like what I think the best case scenario,
19:30which I don't think is going to happen,
19:31is like, if you're able to get like Shane Pinto,
19:34I would give up, I would say like,
19:36I don't even need the first round pick.
19:37I don't need the other prospect.
19:38If you get like Shane Pinto or someone like that,
19:40that is like the home run of like a guy that again-
19:43Didn't the senators say they weren't going to do that though?
19:45Yes.
19:46Yeah, so that's the thing is like,
19:47if you're looking at what player
19:48that would be around that range,
19:51it's like Chikrin's a really good player.
19:53Like, and I understand why maybe they think he's expendable.
19:55If you're able to get like a centerman out of that,
19:57a guy like Pinto, who again, like,
19:59is he a future 70 point guy?
20:02I don't know, but he's a 60 point guy.
20:05A guy who's really good in his own zone.
20:07That would be the ideal get,
20:08but let me tell you, if it's a first round pick,
20:11a top four defenseman in Chikrin,
20:13and then another second or third round pick,
20:16a prospect, a guy that, you know,
20:18can be a plug and play guy pretty early on,
20:21you are thrilled if you're the pros,
20:22and that's what it is.
20:23And again, like we've talked about this too, Evan.
20:26We were going into this offseason being like,
20:28oh, if it's two seconds, you know, it's whatever.
20:30Now we're like, well, if it's not Chikrin
20:31and a first round pick and a prospect,
20:34like, you know, maybe they should just keep them.
20:37Well, that's the thing.
20:38And I think, you know, we've seen the price rise,
20:40credit to Sweeney and the Bruins
20:42for sticking hopefully to a high price.
20:45And the Markstrom trade happening,
20:47that was, you know, a first in 2025.
20:51I also think there's another scenario where like,
20:54let's say it's just a first,
20:57let's say it's the 25th overall pick and a prospect,
21:00or the 25th overall pick and a future second,
21:03or a second this year, whatever.
21:05And there's no Chikrin.
21:07I still think with the cap savings of Olmark,
21:10that's another player in free agency.
21:12So you can chalk up, you know,
21:16if it is Olmark for the 25th pick and a prospect
21:18or something like that,
21:19and they don't get a player back,
21:20the player that they get back really
21:22will be an added wing in free agency.
21:25To Foley, Duclair, you don't find one of those guys, yeah.
21:29Yeah, or turning around and making another trade
21:32with that extra cap space.
21:34That's the point of the cap space.
21:35Now, if it's Chikrin, that's awesome.
21:37I mean, again, as you said, Chikrin, the 25th pick
21:40and a prospect or future draft pick, whatever it is,
21:45that would be as good as it gets
21:46because you're automatically now
21:50definitely one of the best defenses in the league,
21:52if not the best,
21:53not to mention you're now kind of fortifying things
21:55in front of Jeremy Swayman.
21:57So you have a better top four,
21:59you can ease low right into it.
22:00So I think that's the best case scenario.
22:01But even if that does not happen,
22:04and it's a first and a prospect,
22:05I think you're still chilling
22:06because that's just extra offense you can add.
22:10And I think that also changes the identity of your team
22:14because if you add Chikrin,
22:15you're going to be stronger in back,
22:16but you might be a little bit less up front.
22:19Whereas if you don't get Chikrin,
22:21you're not going to be as strong in back,
22:22but you probably,
22:23if we assume they're going to spend their money
22:25how we assume they're going to,
22:27you're going to be better up front.
22:29So to me,
22:30with the way the winds are blowing,
22:33this looks like a really good trade for the Bruins
22:34when it happens.
22:36Now, again, who knows what happens this week?
22:38Yes.
22:38We could get to minute 29 of this podcast
22:41and be like, oh, breaking news,
22:42Lena Solmark to the Detroit Red Wings
22:44for Lord knows what,
22:46and we got to scramble
22:47and who are these people, doesn't that?
22:49But if it is the Senators,
22:50which it feels like it's going to be,
22:53as you said,
22:54I think the Senators kind of have the most to deal,
22:57um, lots of that stuff.
22:58There's another element to this though,
23:00and I mentioned it a little bit earlier,
23:01in division,
23:02trading in the division,
23:04bolstering a divisional opponent.
23:06Does that, would this concern you?
23:08I want to get into that,
23:09but first a quick word from our friends

24:55Now, back to the show.
24:58So again, Lena Solmark,
24:59if he is to go to Ottawa,
25:02they're better, no doubt.
25:04I still don't feel like they're
25:06in the same class as you.
25:08They're not quite there.
25:11You know, a lot of young talent for sure.
25:13And we've been kind of waiting
25:14for a team like the Senators
25:15to emerge over the last couple of years,
25:17along with the Sabres and the Red Wings.
25:20Honestly, the Sabres would be a team
25:21that would be interesting
25:22for Omar to go back to.
25:24I know he does not want to go there.
25:25He will not go to Buffalo.
25:28He will not go back to Buffalo, no.
25:29But it is funny when you think...
25:30Evidently clear.
25:32But if that had never happened,
25:34let's take all that stuff out of it.
25:36It would make sense,
25:37just in terms of they have the 11th pick.
25:39They're probably going to trade it.
25:41They do need a goaltender.
25:43So that would work.
25:43But again, there's history there
25:45that's not exactly great.
25:46Are you worried?
25:47Would you be worried about him
25:48going to the Senators
25:49and bolstering a divisional opponent?
25:52I mean, probably not.
25:55One, considering,
25:55I think just if they're going to pay
25:57such a high premium,
25:58it's probably going to make it worth it for you.
26:00And I think your team is still better
26:01than what they provide.
26:02Like, again, like Eho Omar
26:05does well in a new spot,
26:06but you look at like that decor,
26:08especially if they're taking away
26:09a guy like Chikorin,
26:10not to say that he's this,
26:11you know, defensive anchor out there.
26:14He's got these unreal underlying numbers,
26:16but still a good top four guy
26:18that eats up 20 plus minutes a night.
26:20Like, I don't know,
26:21like they've got good pieces,
26:22but they're kind of like
26:23how Detroit has been
26:24the last couple of years.
26:24Like, yeah, you look at their lineup
26:26and you see like five or six guys like,
26:28all right, that guy's a good player.
26:29And then it just doesn't all come together,
26:30whether the defense is disjointed,
26:33you know, like you've got forwards up front
26:36who are good players,
26:37but like they're lacking in a pretty,
26:38like, you know, Tim Stutzler's
26:40great offensive player,
26:41black hole defensively, right?
26:43Like you've got like these guys,
26:44you know, maybe it's,
26:45maybe that's also just maturity
26:47of just a few more years developing.
26:48And, you know, what the,
26:50what a difference a goalie can make.
26:52So like, I think they'll be better.
26:54They'd be on probably on the doorstep,
26:55but I think you look at
26:57what the Bruins have,
26:59you know, what they were this past year
27:02with Jeremy Swayman,
27:03who's still getting better and better
27:05with all these franchise guys locked up
27:08with the fact that you either have
27:09like a guy like Chikorin
27:10or other, you know,
27:11potential impact player added to a team.
27:14And that's not counting the fact that
27:15who knows who else you add,
27:16you know, is it Elias Lindholm?
27:18Is it a Toffoli?
27:19Is it a player like that?
27:22Is it, you know, is DeBrusque back?
27:23Like you're going to be
27:24probably a better team
27:25than you were last year.
27:27And you're a pretty damn good team.
27:28Your team that gave the Florida Panthers
27:30a pretty tough series.
27:31And again, they have their own shit
27:33to deal with right now, but.
27:36Why, what happened?
27:38I have been keeping tabs.
27:40But I don't know, like,
27:42yes, Ottawa does get better,
27:43but I think you look at
27:44where the Bruins are
27:45and how they should get better.
27:47And they're already in a pretty
27:48damn good spot right now.
27:50You know, it's like
27:51you make the division better,
27:52but I don't think
27:53it's threatening your spot.
27:55Now, we'll talk about this
27:56if we're recording in April next year
27:59and the Bruins somehow
28:00miss a wildcard spot
28:01and the Ottawa Senators surge ahead,
28:03then we'll look really dumb.
28:04But.
28:05Or Bruins Senators in round one.
28:07Yeah, but I personally
28:09don't see that happening.
28:11So the Ottawa gets better,
28:11but I don't think
28:12it's a direct threat to you.
28:14If you're a team, maybe like
28:16Tampa Bay or someone like that,
28:18maybe you're like,
28:19I don't like those guys getting better.
28:20Or a team like Detroit,
28:21where you're all kind of
28:23trying to claw for that wildcard spot
28:25in a really tough Atlantic,
28:26then you're probably like, damn.
28:28But I don't know if it's really
28:29threatening the Bruins
28:30of where they are
28:31or where they should be
28:32in the next couple of years,
28:33because they should still be
28:34in the mix for a division
28:36next couple of years
28:37the way they're built.
28:38If a trade makes you better,
28:41it doesn't matter
28:42who you're doing it with.
28:43To me, the Bruins
28:45are a different class,
28:46especially if it is Chikrin
28:48and your defense is stacked
28:50or you get a first rounder
28:52and you either make that pick
28:53or you trade it
28:54or I hope they make it.
28:57And then suddenly
28:58your prospect pool is better.
29:00You're better.
29:00And then you're adding guys
29:01in free agency.
29:02The Bruins are gonna be
29:02a better team than they were
29:04this past year, next year.
29:06So I'm fine with it.
29:08Again, if he was going to Toronto,
29:10it would be different
29:11than that package
29:12would have to be massive
29:13for Lena Solmark
29:14because you're the one thing
29:15the Leafs have just never
29:16been able to have as a goalie.
29:17That's what they've been waiting
29:19for to get over the hump.
29:21So again, I'm not worried
29:23about Ottawa.
29:24But again, those words
29:26could come back to bite us
29:27in a year.
29:28I still am okay with it though.
29:29And I think, you know,
29:30even if Ottawa gets
29:31a lot better next year,
29:33I expect the Bruins
29:34to also get a lot better next year.
29:35So I'm not particularly worried
29:38about that.
29:39Keeping things in the Atlantic division.
29:40So we're recording this
29:41Monday game seven.
29:42It was Monday night.
29:44We're recording prior to it.
29:45Who knows?
29:46Maybe Lena Solmark news will drop.
29:47We have to scrap this whole episode
29:49and we'll record Tuesday
29:50or something like the director's cut.
29:53Yeah, exactly.
29:55Like it happens with trade deadlines.
29:58Game seven.
29:59Panthers Oilers.
30:02This series has been wild.
30:03Looked like the series was done.
30:05Panthers up three.
30:06Oh, it was like, all right.
30:06Well, it's inevitable.
30:08Kind of a shitty cup final.
30:09Just whatever.
30:10Has not been the case.
30:11The Oilers have gone sicko mode.
30:14I think I saw a stat somewhere
30:15that like the Oilers
30:16after they lost three games
30:17throughout the year,
30:17they would always win
30:18three games in a row.
30:19Like they're very up and down.
30:23If this, if the Oilers win
30:26and complete the comeback,
30:27which would be the first time
30:28since 1942,
30:30I remember those years fondly.
30:34What changes to the board?
30:35Oh, those great time.
30:36The McGillicuddy nips
30:37were flowing back in the 40s.
30:39I mean, my God,
30:39it was just a little bit
30:41of hottest stuff back then.
30:43Yeah.
30:43Well, whenever I think
30:44of like the old times,
30:45this sounds weird.
30:46Remember, Dave Chappelle
30:47did that bit.
30:48I forget where about
30:50people dancing back then.
30:52Did you like that?
30:52Yes.
30:54Whenever I think of the 40s
30:55and like the 30s,
30:56that's what I think of,
30:56like those stupid dances.
30:59So yeah, we're doing the dances
31:00as the pant is the I don't know.
31:02I forget what cup it was.
31:03We're so busy dancing.
31:04I don't remember
31:05who the cup was in 1942.
31:07Do the what kind of changes
31:10the Panthers make?
31:10I mean, they have a lot of guys
31:11coming up free agency.
31:15Like does Maurice get fired
31:16if they lose?
31:18I don't think he does.
31:19Like I think he's got them
31:21to that point.
31:22But like, do they go scorched earth?
31:24I don't know.
31:25I mean, I don't really know
31:27what you do.
31:28I don't know how you really
31:28come back from that, right?
31:30Like, and I say,
31:31how do you come back from that?
31:32Not meaning like they're going
31:33to go scorched earth
31:34and and rip things up.
31:36Like that's going to linger
31:38with you for a long time.
31:39Tell you what?
31:39Bruins fans rooting
31:40probably for the Panthers
31:41to lose considering
31:42their playoff history.
31:43But also, man, your first
31:45run exit does not feel
31:46remotely as bad.
31:47And I'm sure the Timberlake
31:48Lightning feel the same way.
31:49Your playoff losses don't feel
31:51as bad as choking a 3-0 lead
31:54in the Stanley Cup final.
31:55Oh, not even close.
31:57And like, even if I think
31:58I started on like Reddit
32:00or something, even if like
32:01the Panthers go on a revenge
32:02tour next year and win the cup,
32:04you still don't bounce back.
32:05You win a cup in six games next year.
32:07It doesn't absolve you
32:08blowing a lead like this
32:10on this stage.
32:12So like if they lose,
32:14I don't know.
32:14I don't really know what you do.
32:16Like you've got a great team.
32:17They're not going to be
32:18as good next year
32:19because you've got
32:20these cap issues coming up.
32:22You've got to.
32:22You're not going to be able
32:23to resign all these players.
32:25Like you have to imagine
32:26Brendan Montour is gone,
32:27but she's already kind of
32:29falling out of the equation.
32:31If you replace him
32:33with Ekman Larson
32:34on those sites again,
32:35like how sustainable that is.
32:39Like, I don't know, man,
32:40you just look at the way
32:41that team is built.
32:42Like Sam Reinhardt,
32:43you are you going to lose
32:45in this fashion?
32:46And then you're like, well,
32:47now we're going to give
32:48Sam Reinhardt 10 and a half million.
32:49And he's a good player.
32:50He scored 57 frigging goals like that.
32:53But you have to weigh these things
32:55and all these all these cap headaches,
32:57all these tough decisions
32:58would feel so much better
33:00if you had a ring and a Stanley Cup
33:02to validate it all.
33:03If you don't have that
33:04after two back to back years
33:06of coming up short
33:07and losing in this fashion,
33:09you're in a rough spot,
33:10which if it happens
33:12to a Florida Panthers team
33:13that I don't think
33:13anyone in the NHL likes.
33:15Great team when they're playing well.
33:17But man, you look at all they've done
33:19the last couple of months,
33:20the respective fan bases
33:22they've pissed off between
33:23the Bruins and the Rangers
33:25and the Tampa Bay Lightning
33:27and a whole bunch of other teams.
33:28I think even impartial fans
33:29are watching and being like,
33:31we're rooting for the Bruins
33:32and the Rangers.
33:33Something's gone haywire here.
33:36Be really rough.
33:37I'm just saying it would be
33:38really rough to see a team
33:39like that come up short.
33:41After all that's gone
33:42on the last couple of months.
33:43So we'll see.
33:44Real shame.
33:44Real shame.
33:45Again, maybe they won.
33:47You're hearing this part.
33:48They could win.
33:49Yeah, they could win.
33:52Epic collapse.
33:54If they lose, though,
33:54I mean, I think that's
33:55the biggest thing.
33:56And you look at the Oilers
33:58on the other side,
33:59similar story-ish
34:01to the 2019 Blues
34:02down and out
34:03at the beginning of the year.
34:04They changed coaches.
34:06And ever since,
34:06it's just been terrific.
34:09And, you know, down 3-0
34:12to stage the comeback they have.
34:13McDavid has just been
34:15on a completely different level.
34:19Like, there's not much you can say.
34:20I mean, I saw the Athletic
34:21did like a ranking
34:22of Stanley Cup finals
34:23since the lockout in 05.
34:25And they have this one
34:26number one already.
34:28I don't know if I'd put this one
34:31but it's in the top three.
34:34I mean, impartial,
34:35but 2011 was unreal theater.
34:37But like, again,
34:38if Oilers come back and win,
34:40I don't really know
34:40how you argue with that one.
34:41I saw people saying, like,
34:42this is the greatest comeback ever.
34:44And I'm like,
34:45I still put 04 Red Sox, Yankees
34:47in terms of how dramatic
34:48those games were, the history.
34:50Like, again, the Florida Panthers.
34:53It's not the New York Yankees,
34:54the Red Sox, the Florida Panthers.
34:56So this is my thing.
34:57And this is why I don't think
34:58it's the number one
34:59Stanley Cup final ever.
35:00And again, maybe tonight,
35:01game seven is a thriller.
35:02And we're like, you know,
35:03it's like, all right, never mind.
35:04Yeah, yeah.
35:05Like, this is way better,
35:06which honestly would rock
35:07because after this ends,
35:08it falls off a cliff
35:09in terms of sports to watch.
35:12So I wouldn't mind
35:13like a quadruple overtime
35:14like ends at three
35:15in the morning game.
35:18However, it's the Panthers.
35:21Like, that's really what's,
35:22I think, holding this back
35:23in terms of like, yeah,
35:24that's their hateable team.
35:26But like, it's Florida, you know?
35:28And I know that
35:29they've built themselves up
35:30and that's terrific.
35:31But if it's Oilers and Bruins
35:34or Oilers and Rangers,
35:36I think it's a different,
35:37there's a different vibe,
35:38there's a different feel.
35:39The history is there.
35:42Whereas with this Panthers team,
35:43you don't have that.
35:44And I think that's sort of
35:45what's holding this back
35:46from being number one.
35:47I did see a tweet last week
35:49about, oh, if they came back,
35:50this would be more impressive,
35:51as you said, than the 04 Red Sox
35:53and the 28 to three
35:54in the Super Bowl.
35:56I actually wouldn't put
35:57either of those above those.
35:59And I know I'm a Boston fan.
36:01So like, you know,
36:02I guess I'm biased.
36:03But like, the Yankees
36:05had the Red Sox number
36:07for like decades, decades,
36:08forever, forever,
36:11since Babe Ruth was traded.
36:12Like, these teams
36:13have no real history.
36:16And again, I'm not trying
36:17to diminish what the Oilers
36:18are doing.
36:19But like what the Red Sox did
36:21was, and that was Red Sox,
36:22Yankees, the height of the rivalry.
36:24Oilers, Panthers is not
36:26this great rivalry, you know?
36:28Like you had such as Red Sox,
36:30Yankees 04 was on a
36:31completely different level
36:32and 28 to three.
36:33It's hard to compare
36:34a game to a series.
36:35But like, but just run
36:36one freaking ball.
36:40And they didn't,
36:41and they completely messed it up.
36:42So again, I put those
36:43two higher than this.
36:44If the Oilers pull it off again,
36:46not diminishing
36:47what the Oilers have done,
36:48because holy crap,
36:49if they do pull it off,
36:50it would be sensational.
36:52Do you want to make a prediction?
36:54I have Oilers
36:55that Florida team looks
36:57fucking rattled.
36:59So that those shots
37:00on the bench of that again,
37:02like it's hockey you get.
37:04I'll say this in Florida
37:05when three one
37:06they'll be locked in early on
37:08and that will happen
37:09to this hockey.
37:09But like, man,
37:11you even look at like
37:12how the Bruins last year
37:13were going to that game seven.
37:14I think it was Kachuk being like,
37:16oh, all the pressures
37:16on the Boston now.
37:17We're playing with house money.
37:18We're not feeling nervous.
37:19Oh, I should be nervous.
37:20We're coming in there
37:21like they're the ones
37:21who got all the pressure on them.
37:23Like sure feels like the
37:25the narrative has shifted now.
37:27Florida's feeling that way, right?
37:29Your second Stanley Cup final
37:30on the brink of getting bounced again.
37:32How good you were,
37:33how much how much you've
37:34carved a path through
37:35all these teams
37:36and it would end like that.
37:38It's a lot of pressure.
37:40I don't know how they get on the ice.
37:41So no, I don't know
37:43how they get back there immediately.
37:45You know, maybe in a year or two
37:46or maybe in two years,
37:47but three straight years is hard
37:50and finally winning it.
37:51You know, that's a difficult thing.
37:53I want the Oilers,
37:55but I think the Panthers pull it out.
37:57I do, and I don't know.
37:59I always feel let down in these big games.
38:01Like they're either not close
38:03or what I want to happen doesn't happen.
38:06It gets so overhyped.
38:10And I also feel like the Oilers
38:12peaked a little bit in game six.
38:14Like it was such a fever pitch
38:16of holy crap, they're doing this
38:18and then go, you know,
38:19and I completely agree.
38:21The pressure is fully on Florida.
38:23Like I'm not saying
38:24it's not on the Oilers, it isn't.
38:27But I just feel like the Oilers
38:29might have peaked a little bit
38:31and I just have this bad feeling
38:34the Panthers are going to pull it out.
38:35And that's how I feel.
38:37And I just, the way a series goes,
38:41I don't, it doesn't really
38:42matter that they're at home.
38:43I just think like they've been
38:44so humiliated that the only way is up.
38:47And I just think that
38:48that's what's going to happen.
38:49But hopefully I'm wrong.
38:51Hopefully I'm wrong
38:52because boy, would it be funny
38:54if the Panthers blew a 3-0 lead
38:56and it just blew up in their face
38:58and it continued on.
39:00But we'll see what happens.
39:02Should be hell of a game to watch.
39:05Again, we've already,
39:06people have already seen it,
39:07but I guess we're already discussing
39:08things that have happened.
39:10Connor, what can the viewer
39:11look forward to from you
39:12over at the Globe and Boston.com?
39:14Yeah, we've covered every step
39:16related to this offseason,

39:18trades, the draft,
39:19maybe if we have to do a first round
39:23mock draft or something like that
39:25on the fly, which would be
39:26a good problem to have.
39:27Good rock.
39:28But we'll have you covered
