00:00The Liverpool Beatles Museum has unveiled a brand new display featuring
00:04items from the oldest record shop in the city.
00:07Wonderful, I mean they've done a fantastic job, looks great, yeah really good, really pleased.
00:13The musical box has sold records since Jack Lewis started the business back in 1947.
00:19His sister Dorothy bought the shop in 1951 and it's now a fourth generation family-run business.
00:26So we used to sell toys, stinky toys, corky toys, trains, Tommy 00 train sets,
00:31but as we hit the 60s and music took off, especially Merseybeat,
00:37the toys took a back seat and records became the thing we sold most of.
00:42During renovation works in 2023, 24 record sales logs were discovered dating back as far as 1958.
00:51The four log books on display at the museum serve to demonstrate how,
00:54especially in their hometown, the Beatles' sales were outperforming everything else.
00:59I think it's important for the family as well and to share because this has been the family's
01:03life, dedicating his nan, he's dedicated a life and his mum and even Tony, you know,
01:09Tony's been working at the shop since he was about 18.
01:12You started to serve when you were about 14, didn't you, your dinner time.
01:17So it's lovely to celebrate, you know, the family's
01:21achievement and I find it quite emotional to see how far they've come, to be honest.
01:26These aren't the only treasures that the family have come across.
01:29When they were trying to keep their grandmother busy to keep her mind
01:32off things after the death of her husband, they made an interesting discovery.
01:36So they had this cupboard in the back room, they said, well, we'll clear out that cupboard
01:41and when they opened it, there were two boxes of the Magical Mystery Tour,
01:4420 copies mono, 20 copies stereo, unopened.
01:48My nan had hidden them from my grandad because he used to say,
01:50stop buying them Beatles, they'll never last. So they've been there since about 1967.
01:55The musical box and the rest of the logs can be found on West Derby Road in Shoebrook.
