00:00 This is Victoria Stewart. She was a mother of five children, but last year she was killed
00:06 by a man she knew. Now, Clifford Arthur Newman has pleaded guilty to murdering her. Police
00:12 were called to a property one Sunday evening in November after a report that there was
00:16 an unresponsive person inside. They found Miss Stewart dead. Newman will be given a
00:21 mandatory life sentence for murder but could get a discount on his non-parole period for
00:26 the early guilty plea. 39-year-old Miss Stewart was one of four South Australian women killed
00:31 in one week last November, allegedly at the hands of men they knew. South Australian police
00:37 say domestic violence contributed to an almost 70 per cent spike in murders last year. The
00:43 latest statistics show 22 murders were reported in the year to March, up from 13 the year
00:48 before. The increase in deaths led to public outrage late last year and pressured the state
00:53 government to establish a Royal Commission into Gendered Violence. That is due to begin
00:58 in July.
