00:00 While the eyes are an important sensory organ,
00:02 many people do not see eye care as an important part of their healthcare regimen.
00:06 Caring for your eyes includes keeping your glasses or contact lenses in good working condition,
00:12 and of course, going for eye examinations regularly.
00:16 Eye exams are important because sometimes we are able to detect certain diseases earlier.
00:21 When we diagnose them early, we can intervene earlier.
00:24 Early intervention is always the best.
00:27 It is recommended that those above age 50 have their eyes examined at least once a year,
00:32 while those below age 50 should have their eyes checked once every two years.
00:36 Eye examinations help ophthalmologists identify the underlying issues to blurred vision or eye
00:43 pain so early treatment can be administered.
00:45 Among the common eye diseases in Malaysia are age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma.
00:53 Age-related macular degeneration is the gradual breakdown of light-sensitive tissue in the eye.
00:58 Meanwhile, glaucoma is defined as a group of diseases that damages the optic nerve.
01:04 But did you know that eye examinations can also reveal other health issues that you may be suffering from?
01:11 The eye, they say, is the window to many diseases.
01:14 So we can detect uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes mellitus.
01:20 We can also detect heart diseases because then we can look at thinning of the optic nerve,
01:25 which indicates poor control of the heart function.
01:28 We can also sometimes detect sleep apnea when we look at thinning of the optic nerve.
01:34 Sometimes we have detected autoimmune diseases because it also affects the eye.
01:39 So when it affects the eye, then we do further investigations and we find that this patient
01:44 actually has an autoimmune condition such as lupus, I mean, or thyroid disease, you know.
01:49 We have also detected cancers through eye examinations because they come for blurring of vision,
01:54 thinking it's something in the eye, but in the end it is cancer or leukemia.
01:58 Although vision problems tend to develop as a person ages,
02:02 children must also have their eyes checked to ensure good eye health.
02:05 And we have seen patients who delay seeking treatment and once their vision becomes impaired,
02:11 then they are not independent anymore to go out and meet their friends or to do
02:16 what they like to do, like driving themselves,
02:19 to do simple things like the groceries or getting food. That leads to depression, isolation.
