00:10 ...for mental health.
00:13 There are so many people who are amongst us who are really vying for their sanity,
00:19 doing the best that they can that they will not have a mental breakdown,
00:25 keep themselves together.
00:28 We started this series on last week, and we will do so until the first Sunday in June.
00:39 Next Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, where we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit.
00:46 I want all of you to please be in the house.
00:51 We're wearing white together in a form of unity,
00:54 believing that the Holy Spirit is going to descend on us. Amen.
00:59 2 Corinthians chapter 4, verse number 8.
01:06 On this day, it's not just Mother's Day, but on this day,
01:10 we thank God for the life and for the birth of our late apostle, Bishop Eddie Long's birthday is today.
01:18 We thank God for him.
01:22 2 Corinthians chapter 4, verse number 8.
01:27 I want to go to clause B today.
01:31 We are troubled in every side, yet not distressed.
01:36 We are perplexed, but not in despair.
01:41 I want everybody to repeat after me. We are perplexed, but we are not in despair.
01:49 You may be seated.
01:50 I want to preach the second part of this series, "You Get On My Nerves."
01:58 You get on my nerves.
02:01 Don't look at your neighbor, just look straight ahead.
02:04 I don't want there to be a fight in the parking lot.
02:08 So that they don't take it personal, but you just say out loud, "They get on my nerves."
02:14 Amen.
02:17 [Pause]
02:22 Comrades, the last time a man was ever asked to smile was in the Old Testament
02:33 when Nehemiah got word that his hometown was falling apart.
02:39 He was doing all that he could to keep his composure while working as a butler at the White House.
02:48 And the king asked him in the second chapter of that book of Nehemiah, the second verse,
02:55 "Why is your face so sad when you are not sick?"
03:01 This is nothing but sadness of heart.
03:07 From that time to this, society feels like they have the right to impose on black women
03:18 the obligation to always smile.
03:25 It wafts of misogynistic arrogance to tell women not just how they should look,
03:34 but in a matter of speaking, how they should feel.
03:40 As a child, you were always admonished, "Fix your face."
03:47 You were told, "You better not cry, or I'll give you something to cry about."
03:55 Some of y'all just had a Mother's Day flashback right there.
04:02 As an adult, strangers on the street, coworkers in your cubicle,
04:11 and even fellow congregants at your church are always telling you to smile.
04:20 I wanted to rise today to tell you people don't have the right to tell you how to feel.
04:31 America seemingly has a longstanding allergic reaction
04:37 to the negative emotions of anger, grief, and sadness.
04:44 As proof of this, did you not notice that over COVID-19,
04:50 one million people, citizens died, and the nation never had a single day for grieving?
05:00 People always want you to forgive quickly, to mourn swiftly, and to be joyful constantly.
05:12 And they don't even realize that we have become inundated with toxic positivity.
05:21 My unhappiness is making you uncomfortable because you are unwilling to address it.
05:31 So it'll make you feel better if I fake it.
05:37 Dismissing my emotions is dehumanizing of my existence.
05:43 I have the right to feel how I feel.
05:48 You don't even understand all of the issues I have.
05:52 My weighty thoughts, my multiple responsibilities, my trunks of trauma,
05:59 the demands on my time, a preoccupation with my appearance, my undiagnosed stress,
06:09 and with all of that, you got the nerve to want to make me smile?
06:15 Why? Why do I need to smile if that's not how I feel?
06:21 If that's not the stage that I'm in, if that's not the season that I am existing in?
06:28 Paul sent a letter to the church at Corinth and said to them in no uncertain terms
06:34 that you can't afford to be self-effacing.
06:38 Your faith is going to have to bolster you.
06:42 In the eighth verse, he admits we are perplexed.
06:50 Being perplexed is the inability to see something clearly,
06:56 to grasp something logically, or to decide something assuredly.
07:04 Being perplexed is nerve-wracking as it is uncomfortable.
07:12 As black Americans, you've got to have some perplexity if you have any semblance of consciousness.
07:20 You've got to be perplexed.
07:22 How Donald Trump is facing 91 felony charges, and people think he is fit to be president,
07:31 but Fannie Willis has an in-office relationship and they don't think she should be DA.
07:39 It's perplexing.
07:41 It's perplexing how the indigenous, the coal miners, those exposed to pesticides,
07:48 survivors of natural disasters, survivors of 9/11,
07:52 and even those impacted by trade agreements all get reparations.
07:58 But black people who built this economy and this country can't even get a committee hearing about it.
08:06 It's perplexing how we will shut down the internet for a whole week,
08:12 arguing about Kendrick Lamar and Drake,
08:16 but we don't use that same energy to find out about stocks and bonds and insurance
08:22 and retirement and entrepreneurship.
08:26 It's perplexing that college students participating in non-violent demonstrations are considered anti-Semitic,
08:36 but the banning of books that talk about Rosa Parks and talk about Huey P. Newton
08:42 and talk about the Underground Railroad are banned from schools in Florida,
08:48 but nobody has said it's anti-black.
08:52 It's perplexing how Kaitlyn Clark can get an eight-figure deal from Nike,
08:59 but Angel Reese can't even get a headband when she's a better basketball player.
09:07 It's perplexing.
09:09 It's perplexing how folk in church can speak in tongues but won't speak to you.
09:14 It is perplexing.
09:20 How you can run all around the church and still won't stop
09:24 if you see a single mother trying to pull herself together and raise her child.
09:30 It's perplexing how you can do all of that dancing and all of that yelling and all of that screaming
09:36 and you still ain't registered to vote.
09:38 It is perplexing.
09:42 It's perplexing how your children got a flat-screen TV in their bedroom,
09:47 got an iPhone 15 on their hip, and the little negro can't conjugate verbs,
09:52 can't reduce fractions, but they got every video game known to mankind.
09:58 It is perplexing.
10:01 It's perplexing how you're going to go up to the school and try to fight the teacher
10:06 because she's giving discipline and order when you ain't even going over homework
10:12 or making sure the little pookie is doing what they're supposed to do.
10:16 It is perplexing.
10:22 It's not knowing, not understanding, not being able to decide is nerve-wracking.
10:32 It's perplexing that after all this time, people still don't consider what black women,
10:40 all the more black mothers, have to endure.
10:44 The black mothers who are sitting on your row right now had to make a choice
10:51 about their families and their livelihood that was not always comfortable.
10:57 I'm telling you, before you judge your mother too quickly or write her off too fast,
11:04 you don't know the other side of her testimony of what she had to shield you from
11:10 just in order for you to have a household.
11:14 She was not trying to block your father.
11:17 She was trying to keep you from an abuser and an alcoholic.
11:21 Y'all ain't saying nothing to me.
11:23 She didn't know all of the right things to do, but she did the best that she could with what she had.
11:30 And you ought to be thankful under God that you didn't come out half bad.
11:35 Y'all ain't saying nothing.
11:37 You ought to thank God for a praying mother, even when she didn't have all the degrees,
11:43 didn't have the best English, didn't say everything right,
11:47 but she had a heart for your survival, and you're going to sit in here bougie
11:53 with an attitude talking about you ain't talking to her.
11:56 You must be crazy.
11:58 Get out of here and get your mama on the phone and thank her for her sacrifice.
12:09 If you don't know, if you don't know what it feels like to have the pressure of being a black woman
12:21 and all the more about being a black mother, I want you to know that I am obviously ill-equipped
12:28 to tell you what that pressure is.
12:31 I brought in today an example of somebody who can speak better for me than I can for myself.
12:38 And I believe that this black woman has gotten a bad rap.
12:42 You know her as Job's wife.
12:47 Mind you, nobody ever pays attention to the fact that Job's wife gave birth to ten children naturally
12:57 with no midwife.
13:00 Nobody talks about that Job's wife breastfed ten children.
13:06 There were no public schools. She taught all ten children how to read.
13:12 Nobody talks about how she changed the diapers of ten children and cooked dinner every night
13:19 without the assistance of a nanny.
13:22 Nobody talks about how it is that she kept a clean home and operated in integrity.
13:29 Nobody talks about how she taught ten children how to tie their shoes.
13:34 Ten children the alphabet. Ten children their numbers.
13:39 Nobody talks about how it is that she walked them every day and made sure that they were in right standing.
13:46 When it is that we find her, we just know that she's caught a stray bullet
13:53 because Satan was going up and down looking for somebody to devour.
13:59 And while he's going up and down looking for somebody to devour, watch what God does.
14:04 God nominates Job and says, "Have you considered my servant Job?"
14:12 He says, "I never thought about him because you put a hedge fence of protection around him."
14:19 I want you to hear this very carefully, that the contract that was put out by Satan only had Job's name on it.
14:28 And nobody ever took a moment over the last 2,024 years to consider how it impacted Job's wife.
14:38 Do you know, just look straight ahead, do you know the pain women have had to endure because of the man they were connected to?
14:48 It was not their decision, it was not their choice, but because they are loyal by nature
14:55 they ended up being inflicted by an attack that was supposed to be for the man.
15:01 You are surrounded by women today who supported dreams of men who never had the capacity to fulfill it.
15:10 You are surrounded by women who went to jail because they wouldn't testify against that man.
15:17 You don't even know what women around here have been loyal to somebody who was unfaithful.
15:24 You got no idea how many women got cataracts because they turned a blind eye to what their man was doing.
15:33 Their greatest liability was their loyalty.
15:37 And they went through some stuff that they should have never had to endure
15:42 because they were connected to a man that was under demonic attack.
15:47 But I speak to some woman in this room that needs to know that God wanted you to hear it today
15:54 because you were faithful over a few things.
15:58 He's going to make you ruler over many.
16:00 Y'all ain't saying nothing.
16:02 You ought to be thanking God that in spite of some bad relationships you don't hate all men.
16:09 In spite of what you've been through, you ain't bitter, you ain't angry, you ain't resentful, you ain't looking for revenge.
16:16 But you made up in your mind, "For God I'll live and for God I'll die."
16:23 And I'm thankful under God there are some women who never lost your identity being connected to a man.
16:31 You understood I am who I am with or without him.
16:37 They can come or they can go.
16:39 But in the words of hell you tell me, "Ain't I a woman?"
16:43 And as a consequence you never needed a man to affirm who you were.
16:49 You knew who you were when you got up in the morning.
16:52 That there's more to you than breasts, hips, and fingertips.
16:57 But you got a mind in your head and your mind is your secret weapon.
17:03 I need somebody to look at somebody else and say, "I was blessed in spite of who I was connected to."
17:11 God had to put his hand on my life in spite of who I was associated with.
17:19 He protected you in spite of your association, in spite of your connection.
17:31 You were patient with somebody who serially broke promises.
17:37 God I can't hear nobody. You were the only one who was praying in the house.
17:43 You were the only one who was believing God for a breakthrough.
17:47 They had no idea the nights you prayed for them when they took you for granted.
17:53 But there was something in you that God says, "I'm going to bless you anyway."
17:58 Because you were never looking for no sugar daddy.
18:02 You were looking for nobody to take care of you.
18:05 You just needed somebody who would treat you decently and love you with honor and respect and value what you brought to the table.
18:16 Satan's going up and down and the assignment was on Job.
18:22 But Job's wife has got to deal with the battering ram of what's taking place.
18:28 And the report reads that Job lost all his children.
18:34 And here's what's crazy y'all, they read it as if Job is a single father.
18:41 God help me in here.
18:44 It gives no thought to the emotional toll it took on Job's wife.
18:51 I've got to pause right here because I find it out of order that many times in the book they speak Job's name.
18:59 But they never speak her name.
19:02 And I've got some women in the room who understand I was the hardest worker.
19:07 I was the greatest producer.
19:09 I was a strong contributor.
19:12 But they never called my name.
19:14 But I'm so grateful that promotion don't come from the east or the west.
19:20 Don't you pretend like you don't know who I am.
19:23 You know I know how to make a dollar out of 15 cents.
19:27 You know I can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'.
19:31 You know that I've been making stuff work even when it was falling apart.
19:36 I need every woman in this room, would you just shout your own name out loud?
19:42 I said speak your whole name out loud.
19:46 God said your name is worthy of honor.
19:49 Your name is worthy of promotion.
19:52 Your name is worthy of an upgrade.
19:55 And you don't need a cosigner.
19:58 You don't need a letter of recommendation.
20:01 Just put your name to my name.
20:04 Because if you ask anything in my name, it shall be given to you.
20:15 They never call her name.
20:19 They never call her name and never figure out how it is that she feels.
20:24 And she loses 10 children in one day.
20:29 I'm going to say this to somebody who's in this room.
20:32 That losing a child is not always to death.
20:37 You can lose your child to drugs.
20:41 You can lose your child to parental alienation.
20:45 You can lose your child to the state.
20:48 You can lose your child to incarceration.
20:52 You can lose your child overprotective from an overprotective spouse.
20:58 You can lose your child to the streets.
21:01 You can lose your child to mental illness.
21:04 You can lose your child from poor choices.
21:08 You can lose them from being overindulgent.
21:11 But I came to tell you that if they're lost, God can still find them.
21:16 I don't know what condition your child is in.
21:20 But I feel like I need to say it to some praying mamas.
21:24 Watch what God does in the next 45 days.
21:28 He's getting ready to bring your child out of a circumstance that is too big for you to handle.
21:36 There are others on your road who are trying to act like they got a perfect family.
21:41 But those of you that need God to pull your child out of some situation,
21:47 I dare some praying mamas to go into warfare right now.
21:53 He said if you open up your mouth, watch them come back and apologize.
21:59 If you open up your mouth, watch them find the level of respect that is worthy of you.
22:07 If you open up your mouth, watch God get them out of that relationship.
22:12 It is not over until God says it's over.
22:18 Hallelujah. You may be seated.
22:22 Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
22:30 I feel glory coming now. Hallelujah.
22:35 I don't know who this is for, but I need you to just tell the mother right, your child is not lost.
22:40 Hallelujah. God getting ready to break them out of it any moment now.
22:45 I don't know why y'all trying to act cute and stuck up.
22:48 Hallelujah. But God says I'm able to keep your child from falling and to present them faultless before the throne of grace.
22:59 I dare some mother who's been burdened by what your child is in.
23:05 Would you just lift up that hand and open up your mouth and declare over to God, this battle is not mine.
23:14 This battle is yours.
23:19 Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. You ain't going to lose your child.
23:27 I said you ain't going to lose your child.
23:31 Johann Sebastian Bach, you know that great composer Johann Sebastian Bach in his first marriage lost four children.
23:40 Disease came to the land. Not only did he lose four children, watch this, he also lost his wife.
23:47 Three years later, he remarried. And from that second marriage, he had seven children.
23:54 And the pestilence was still in the air. And so he lost all seven children and lost his second wife.
24:02 It is only after losing 11 children that he started writing symphonies.
24:09 And at the top of the symphony, he would always write, Lord, help me.
24:14 But at the end of the symphony, he would always write, Lord, I give you all the glory.
24:21 Sometimes you don't find your best song until you live through some pain.
24:26 God, y'all ain't saying nothing to me. You don't find the right key till you've been through something that almost wiped you out.
24:34 You really don't have a real relationship with God while things are going well.
24:39 But I need somebody that'll be honest today that me and God really didn't get that close till I thought I was going to lose it.
24:47 Me and God really didn't get tight like that until I could barely breathe.
24:52 But I give him glory that in spite of what my family been through, I will bless the Lord at all times.
25:01 And his praise shall--he'd open it up. He'd open it up and say, Lord, help me.
25:11 That's what I want to have resound in this room is I want every person to throw your head back and shout, Lord, help me.
25:20 Help me raise these kids. Help me keep this family together.
25:25 Help me not to lose my mind. Help me to keep my faith.
25:30 But when it is that he ended the symphony, he said, Lord, I give you the glory.
25:35 I give you the honor. I came to upset the enemy today because you get ready to give God praise.
25:42 Hear me, not for nothing material. I want you to take a moment and give God praise that what you prayed for for your children is getting ready to come to pass.
25:54 Whatever is the greatness inside of them, God says, I'm getting ready to unlock it.
26:01 I want to hear the sound of worshiping mothers that know, God, this is your child.
26:07 You just loaned them to me, but I need you to touch them till they get their act together.
26:14 Touch them till they go back to school. Touch them till they get their focus.
26:21 Said Lord, touch me. And something amazing happens that I wanted you to see is that Job loses 10 children in one day.
26:34 Loses all of his house houses and loses his entire investment portfolio and goes back home and addresses his wife.
26:46 And most times this is what we know about Job's wife. And she said, why don't you curse God and die?
26:56 I mean, the Bible broke spousal privilege.
27:00 But I say it behind closed doors, that wasn't supposed to be printed.
27:05 That was just between me and him. Some of y'all ought to be thanking God that God didn't publish your text thread.
27:16 You ought to be thanking God that your DMs are not on full display.
27:21 The reason why some of us are thanking God is because we serve a God that can keep my secrets.
27:28 See, there's some people who will hate you based off of what they heard about you.
27:34 But you ought to thank God that God loves you when he knows everything about us, but still does not give up on us.
27:41 Y'all ain't saying anything. You ought to be giving him praise. Why?
27:45 Because there's some stuff I would hate for it to get out. But his grace and his mercy saw me through.
27:57 I wanted to show you something that I am afraid that we've hopscotched over, that we've paid no attention to.
28:05 It's Job's wife said to Job, curse God and die. Let this just be the end of it.
28:13 Let this just be the end of it. I'm sick of it. If this is what God is doing to you, let's just die right now.
28:22 And I don't know what happened to us that we have been engineered in our thinking to believe we can't question God when things ain't going right.
28:34 There's some people in this room that got some real questions. Hallelujah. God, you're going to have to tell me something.
28:41 Because I don't understand why you put me in this family. I don't know why you put me in this situation.
28:46 Why you put me in this circumstance. Don't you let these church people fool you. Every day you ain't blessed in highly favor.
28:54 Every day you ain't saying the joy of the Lord is my strength. Every day you ain't got a smile on your face.
29:02 But the reality is I had some good days and I had some bad days, but my good days I waited.
29:17 I came when the Holy Spirit gave me this word. I almost busted out of my own skin because I couldn't wait to give it to you today.
29:25 Because you don't even realize how hard you've been on yourself. You don't even realize that you owe yourself some grace.
29:34 I'm telling you it has been daunting and it has been nothing short of pure D-Hell.
29:41 But the reason why you got to give God glory is as bad as it is. With everything that you lost.
29:49 With what it is that they did to you. For how they mishandled you. Do you know why the devil can't stand you?
29:57 He can't stand you because as bad as it was, here's your shout, you never curse God.
30:03 You still love him. You still give him the honor. You still give him the praise.
30:11 You ought to be thanking God right now. God did you see how I still bless you? How I still love you?
30:20 How I still serve you? How I still come to church?
30:26 I never curse God. As bad as it was. You may be seated. I'm almost finished.
30:37 I never curse God. Hallelujah. I need him too much. I don't understand him.
30:43 His ways ain't my ways. His thoughts ain't my thoughts. But I ain't never curse God.
30:49 Do you want to know why I didn't curse him? I never seen a righteous forsaker or a seed begging prayer.
30:57 Why didn't you curse God? He may not come when I wanted him to come. But he's at home time.
31:07 Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
31:14 You may be seated for the last time today. The last time I ask you to be seated.
31:22 And I'm finished after this. You got to stop lying.
31:32 You got to stop lying. It ain't good. You got to stop lying.
31:37 All this time we keep perpetuating the lie that Job lost everything.
31:44 Stop lying. He lost all his houses. Lost all his children. Lost all of his wealth.
31:54 Y'all ain't saying nothing to me. Lost his entire portfolio. Lost all of his cars.
32:01 Mothers I don't know how y'all sitting there like that. But you never paid attention that with everything that he lost,
32:08 he never lost his wife. God said there's some stuff I'm going to let the enemy take.
32:14 But a woman that fears me, the devil better not think about it.
32:20 And I got some women in here that ought to be shouting, cause you lost some stuff in this life.
32:27 But in spite of what you lost, you never lost your mind. And you never lost your faith.
32:34 And you never lost your relationship with God. The Bible said after not many days, everything he lost,
32:43 God gave him double for his trouble. And I need to prophesy to some mothers.
32:50 God said with everything you lost, watch what I do for you this summer.
32:56 I'm going to give you double for your trouble. You've been through too much to not be compensated for your faithfulness.
33:08 [applause]
33:14 They only use one snapshot of what Job's wife said. And she said that out of depression.
33:26 She said that out of loss. She said that, here it is after trauma.
33:32 Why don't you curse God and die? But I am so mad with the stenographer of Job.
33:38 Because he never came back and wrote down what she said when she got double back.
33:45 Y'all ain't saying nothing to me. And because the Bible has left it empty, I wanted to fill in the blank today.
33:54 I wanted to know what it sounds like for black mothers who have been through trauma.
34:00 Black mothers who have suffered loss. Black mothers who had to go through adjustments
34:06 because of who they were connected to. God said let me hear the sound you're going to make.
34:12 If this is the year that everything you lost, I'm going to give it back to you.
34:20 Now if you don't believe it, you ain't got a shot with us.
34:25 But if you believe it's going to be pressed down, shaken together, run it over.
