00:00 The role of nursing has increased tremendously over the last 10 years or so.
00:06 It's a very diverse career. You can be a specialist nurses like the chemotherapy nurses behind us.
00:11 You can be running endoscopy units. They've taken over many of the roles of doctors.
00:16 They can go into management or patient care.
00:25 Despite nursing being such a fulfilling career, we've often had to recruit more nurses from elsewhere around the world,
00:34 particularly the Philippines, which have brought in an enormous breadth of culture and expertise, which we're very grateful for.
00:43 Hi, my name is Yvonne Jeffs. I'm the lead nurse for cancer and palliative care at Bedford Hospital.
00:52 I've been nursing since 1989 and I've had a very varied career with many opportunities which I think nursing provides.
01:00 This can include from working on the wards, coordinating the patient's care,
01:05 very strongly being an advocate for patients and ensuring they have the best care possible.
01:10 I would recommend nursing as a career as it has evolved from Florence Nightingale when we were being handmaidens to the consultants
01:19 and providing basic care for the patients.
01:23 Now within nursing there are so many specialities you can specialise in, for example oncology, which is where my speciality lies.
01:31 lies.
