Articulate charity is asking the Scottish Government to change the law to ensure all care experienced young people have access to arts and culture.
Transcript
00:00 Articulate is a charity that I set up seven years ago to help use arts, creativity and culture
00:06 and make that accessible so that young people who are on the margins, especially care experienced
00:11 young people, can tap into their own innate creativity to get where they want to go.
00:15 So we put the arts in our cultural landscape at their fingertips and they explore and experiment
00:20 their own cities and regions in order to fully understand their place in the world.
00:25 One of the things we're particularly proud of just now is our creative change makers.
00:30 They are eight care experienced young emerging artists who want to use their ability to
00:37 shape narrative around things that they want to see improved in society.
00:43 So they use a concept that we call artivism and they currently are wanting much fairer access
00:50 to the arts, creativity and culture for all care experienced young people, so all 15,000.
00:55 And the one way that they think that that's possible is to ask people in power to write
01:00 at this moment where the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child are being embedded in Scots
01:05 law and Article 31 is the one that specifically deals with the arts and so their ask, which I'm
01:12 voicing today, is that politicians, decision makers, budget holders think about putting Article 31 into
01:20 every Scottish child's plan and they're doing that really creatively by releasing 10 different
01:28 bits of a campaign between March and November. And the billboards project is one of those items
01:34 that they've released as part of the first step of their campaign.
01:38 For care experienced young people, the arts is a really brilliant way to
01:41 express yourself and to explore things that have happened in the past but also to
01:46 acknowledge them in the present in a way that's sometimes really thought-provoking or memorable or
01:51 beautiful or sometimes makes you a bit sad but it helps you reflect also,
01:56 think forward about how you were using this moment in time.
