00:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:08 We're now stepping into what is a very special area of the
00:13 Peterson Museum called The Vault.
00:16 I'm in Hog Heaven.
00:17 I'm a massive Metallica fan.
00:19 And these cars here are some of the custom collection of
00:22 James Hetfield, the lead singer and
00:23 guitarist of Metallica.
00:26 Lots of Rick Dore, who's a renowned hot dog builder, hot
00:30 rod builder.
00:32 And look at this, Iron Fist, which is one of my personal
00:35 favorites of the James Hetfield cars, finished in
00:38 bare metal.
00:39 And the level of skill required to do that, because
00:42 you can't cover things up with filler, Bondo, paint, et
00:46 cetera, is incredible.
00:48 Walk with me, Dennis.
00:50 We're going to come down here.
00:51 We've got Crimson Ghost.
00:53 I've actually seen Crimson Ghost before, I think, at
00:55 Festival of Speed, a special exhibition they did there many
00:58 moons ago.
00:59 1937 Ford Coupe, absolutely astounding looking car,
01:04 another Rick Dore car.
01:06 Once again, a Rick Dore car here.
01:08 Voodoo Priest, a 1937 Lincoln Zephyr.
01:13 Just amazing design and amazing execution.
01:17 We're going to walk backwards now and look at
01:21 this astounding truck.
01:23 This is called Straight Edge, 1956 Ford F100.
01:27 This is from Scott Mugford, Blue Collar Customs.
01:31 Just an incredible looking car.
01:33 455 cubic inch Oldsmobile V8 in this.
01:37 And that paint job, oh my lord.
01:42 We are under an air conditioner in the vault here.
01:45 It's very noisy, so apologies for that.
01:47 But I'm just so excited.
01:49 Couple more there.
01:51 Right, follow me round, Dennis.
01:56 This one here is called Skyscraper, another Rick Dore
01:59 car, 1953 Buick Skylark, 350 cubic inch V8 Chevy in that
02:05 one.
02:06 And then if we turn around, we've got Slow Burn.
02:09 That's the one I saw at Goodwood Festival of Speed,
02:12 1936 Auburn 852 Boat Tail Speedster, a 350 cubic inch V8
02:19 Chevy again in that one, and the Dead Kennedy, which is
02:22 absolutely awesome.
02:24 This one James Hetfield actually built himself.
02:27 It's a 430 cubic inch Lincoln V8 in this one.
02:32 And just an incredible example of a Lincoln Continental.
02:36 Slightly satin finish to it.
02:38 Obviously, that grill's all very custom.
02:41 Oh, what a thing.
02:42 Sits so low to the ground, obviously on air ride.
02:45 Amazing looking car and an amazing collection.
02:48 And he's my hero.
02:51 This is another James Hetfield, Rick Dore collaboration.
02:54 This one's called Aquarius.
02:56 And many people regard this to be
02:59 one of the most special cars in the collection.
03:03 As you can see, it's an epic piece of design,
03:06 very much inspired by the Art Deco movement.
03:17 I'm sure you'll agree that's quite a special and quite
03:21 a unique thing.
03:22 Now, music fans will probably recognize this,
03:25 despite the fact it's under wraps.
03:27 It's a 1948 Cadillac Sedanette.
03:31 And it's commissioned by Billy Gibbons
03:33 from the rock band ZZ Top, conceived by designer Larry
03:36 Erickson and built by Boyd Coddington.
03:39 This was constructed in just 180 days,
03:41 despite being hand built. It's got a massive 500 cubic inch
03:45 Cadillac V8 engine, and it's appeared
03:47 on the covers of numerous magazines and ZZ Top albums.
03:52 There it is, folks, Cadzilla.
03:54 I have seen this once before at Festival of Speed.
03:57 And I didn't think I'd see it again.
04:04 What a thing, what an iconic car.
04:07 Got a 1982 Decard sedan here from Blade Runner.
04:12 Here's a car you don't see every day.
04:14 It's from the collection of His Majesty Muhammad VI,
04:17 the King of Morocco, on loan from Leraki, I think it is.
04:21 It's called a Leraki Sahara.
04:23 0-60 in under 3 and 1/2 seconds, 1,550 horsepower,
04:28 7-liter Chevy V8 with a turbocharger on it,
04:31 1,550 horsepower.
04:34 Wow.
04:37 This is quite an important car for hot rod historians.
04:40 This was the first car from Ed "Big Daddy" Roth,
04:45 who basically was a massive part of the hot rod craze
04:49 in the '50s.
04:50 1959, this was 331 cubic inch V8 Cadillac, 133 horsepower.
04:55 And then from hot rods of old
04:59 and important people in that world, check this one out.
05:02 This is the Fuss Deuce 1932 Ford Roadster 0032
05:08 by Chip Fuss.
05:10 And that is a gorgeous thing.
05:14 Very sleek lines, amazing paint job,
05:17 and a very cool custom interior.
05:21 What a thing.
05:22 This has to be one of the most interesting cars in the vault.
05:27 It's a Mercedes 600, long juley.
05:32 And as you can see, it's got a bit of a stretch,
05:34 and you'll see it's got some running boards
05:37 on the outside, possibly to position your guards.
05:41 Now, the interesting thing with this car
05:43 is it once belonged to Saddam Hussein.
05:45 Apparently it arrived here,
05:47 and they then found some documents
05:50 and realized that one of the former owners
05:52 was Saddam himself.
05:55 Ooh.
05:58 If you're aware of the movie "Little Miss Sunshine,"
06:03 this is the VW bus, or type two transporter
06:06 from that 75 mile an hour top speed, 68 horsepower,
06:11 and price when new was just under $8,000 on one of these.
06:16 This car here is a 1965 Ford Zebra Mustang
06:21 by George Barris, driven by Nancy Sinatra
06:24 in 1965's "Marriage on the Rocks."
06:27 And this must be another George Barris car over here,
06:31 'cause it's absolutely mental.
06:34 (car door slams)
06:36 Now, this car here may have been viewed
06:39 by more people than any in the whole Peterson Museum.
06:44 This was Pope John Paul II's "Pope Nabil."
06:48 As you can see, it's a very stretched Cadillac.
07:00 And that's where the man himself sat and waved.
07:04 Couple of interesting cars here.
07:08 This one was owned by Howard Hughes,
07:10 a 1951 Chrysler camera car owned by RKO Pictures,
07:15 which was bought by Howard Hughes.
07:17 Basically, one of the first camera cars that appeared
07:22 when they were making movies,
07:23 someone decided it was difficult
07:25 to get moving shots, et cetera,
07:28 and these things were all rigged.
07:30 We've also got a 1971 DiTomaso Pantera,
07:33 I think one of the best-looking cars of its era.
07:36 Interesting thing with this one is it belonged to Elvis,
07:39 and Elvis went out to start it one day,
07:43 and it wouldn't start, and he was so furious,
07:46 he shot it three times,
07:47 and the bullet holes are still in it.
07:49 Unfortunately, from the angle here,
07:51 we're not allowed to walk in between the cars or anything.
07:54 I can't show you those bullet holes.
07:56 We've got a couple under wraps here,
07:59 but this car is the car from "The Green Hornet,"
08:03 and this one here, if you watch Netflix
08:07 and you're aware of "Gotham Garage,"
08:10 this is one that they built.
08:11 It's the Exner, and they built that
08:14 and donated it to the Petersen Museum.
08:17 It's a 1960 Plymouth Exner replica.
08:20 Virgil Exner produced one of these back in the day,
08:24 a bit of a one-off vehicle,
08:26 and it was their sort of tip of the hat
08:28 to what they thought was an exceptional piece of design.
08:31 This one's under wrapped,
08:33 but it's an absolutely bananas car
08:36 called "Grease Lightning."
08:38 John Travolta's, by the looks of it.
08:40 Here's a very strange one,
08:43 a 1969 Citroen Meharry Transparante,
08:48 602cc, flat two, 62 mile an hour, 29 horsepower.
08:53 As you can see, it's got transparent plastic bodywork.
08:58 A very strange concept.
09:00 There's just so much here, folks.
09:03 They're just cars for days.
09:05 The vault is very, very special.
09:06 And if you're coming to the Petersen Museum,
09:12 I strongly suggest you pay the extra couple of quid
09:16 and come down to the vault
09:17 because it's constantly changing,
09:22 but I think it's always gonna be fairly breathtaking.
09:25 Just look at all these bikes.
09:27 So here's one for the F1 cars.
09:30 We've got 1995 McLaren MP4/10,
09:33 three liter Mercedes-Benz V10, 699 horsepower,
09:38 Micah Hackenham, Mark Blundell,
09:40 Nigel Mantle, Jan Magnussen.
09:43 This one had no wins, two podiums, 17 races.
09:48 We've then got a 2.9 liter V10, 1999 McLaren MP4/14.
09:54 This car would have been driven by Micah Hackenham,
09:56 David Coulthard, seven wins, 15 podiums, and 16 races.
10:00 We've got 2009 MP4/24.
10:03 This was Lewis Hamilton, Heikki Kovalainen.
10:06 And over there, we have a 2005 MP4/20,
10:11 which was driven by the likes of Juan Pablo Montoya
10:16 and Kimi Räikkönen.
10:18 Oh, this is an iconic one,
10:19 back from my Scalextrics days as a boy.
10:22 A 1987 Lotus Type 99T,
10:25 Ayrton Senna and Satoru Nakajima driven that one.
10:29 That is Senna's car signed there, as you can see as well.
10:33 Looks like that might be signed by Bruno rather than Ayrton,
10:35 but I wouldn't put my life on that.
10:38 And of course, the Rothmans Williams driven by Senna.
10:42 Obviously lost his life in one of these, tragically.
10:45 And Damon Hill.
10:47 We've then got 2011 McLaren MP4/26.
10:50 That's 2.4 liter V8 driven by Jenson Button,
10:53 Lewis Hamilton.
10:55 And then obviously we've got a more modern day McLaren
10:58 over here, very cool.
11:00 Then got some classic open wheelers
11:03 and some absolutely bonkers drag cars
11:09 and some big sports cars.
11:11 These two here driven by none other than Juan Fangio.
11:18 (upbeat music)
11:20 (upbeat music)
11:23 (upbeat music)
11:25 (upbeat music)
