00:00Ferrari, just the name wings with history.
00:13Whether it's Michael Schumacher winning another race, or childhood memories of a poster on
00:18your wall.
00:21But even Ferrari dreamers have to grow up one day, and maybe when they do, they dream
00:28about a grown-up Ferrari.
00:31The 456 was first introduced in 1992, and was Ferrari's first car, designed for the
00:3721st century. A modern interpretation of the traditional 2 plus 2, the 456 was also the
00:43first modern Ferrari to revert to a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive configuration. And that,
00:49importantly, is what makes it grown-up. It allows extra space for passengers and their
00:53luggage.
00:56So you might say that this is Danny's Ferrari. All good. Who's the Danny?
01:03Thing is, I've never actually been sure about the 456, either the looks or the idea of it.
01:10And then I drove it, and it all changed. So if you, like me, are a doubter, let's just
01:18see if this experience changes your mind.
01:28I'll tell you one thing for a start. Nothing is more modern than Ferrari.
01:47Nothing I have ever driven has the instant sense of occasion that hits you when you climb
01:52on board this thing. And you do climb on board.
02:04Now, just because this is the grown-up Ferrari, don't let that fool you into thinking it's
02:09sedate. Because it's not. Not by a long way. That is a Ferrari 5.5 litre V12 up front there,
02:16pushing out 442 brake horsepower, which means 0-60 is achieved in just over five seconds,
02:23and the top speed, 187 miles an hour. Yeah! Thank you!
02:33It's really difficult to explain in absolute terms when you get to this level of stratospherically
02:39expensive car, just why it's worth it. It is worth it. I know it's worth it. I just
02:45can't see exactly why. And boy, this is a very, very expensive motor. Over £170,000,
02:55it is the most expensive Ferrari you can buy. Mind you, there's a couple of good reasons
03:01why you might pay a bit more. And it's these two extra seats in the back. I'm in the back
03:08seat of a Ferrari. Look at that, my mate's here. That's incredible.
03:18Of course there are those who'll sit there saying, well, you see, front engine, rear
03:22wheel drive, it's nothing to a mid-engine layout. Really? I'd like to see you test
03:27the limits of this thing. Oh yeah, it is incredible. It's just an amazing driving experience. Again,
03:35I can't tell you why it's worth the money, but somehow it is. It's impossibly direct.
03:41Immediate response from every input through the steering wheel without being twitchy.
03:46It feels purposeful. It's absolutely really comfortable. There's a gentle amount of body
03:50roll, which I didn't expect to find, but it is so perfectly controlled. I have absolute
03:55confidence in this machine. There is an amazingly sophisticated traction control system, and
04:01there's an off button, and I'm going to leave it alone. Very expensive car.
04:10Most 456s are sold in automatic form, and before you gasp, it's not actually that surprising.
04:15This is, after all, a four-seater, a practical Ferrari. This, though, is a manual version,
04:20six-speed, with, of course, the traditional Ferrari gate. You hear that clack, clack between
04:25gear changes. It's gorgeous. I want to marry it.
04:29Now, let's face it. No matter how many nice things I say about this car, Ferrari aren't
04:33going to let me keep it. I've got to find something to criticise. Find a fault. Find
04:39a fault. Something to criticise. Well, if there was going to be one criticism, it's
04:44more a criticism of me, if I'm honest. It's the fact that it doesn't scream Ferrari. So
04:48I've blown 170 odd Gs on the car, and it's discreet. I want louder brass. I'm just too
04:55vulgar for this car. And that's Michael, not the cars.
04:59There are those fanatical purists who dislike the new breed of well-behaved supercars, but
05:04let's face it. Few of us have the ability of Michael Schumacher. The 456's pure usability
05:10means you can look forward to driving the car and enjoy it, instead of frightening the
05:14living daylights out of yourself.
05:17In my years as a motoring journalist, I have never changed my mind so completely about
05:22a car. The 456 is my new fave Fezzer. Hooray! Ferrari will be chuffed.
05:32Oh boy. Just imagine, what a day. I mean, you're actually going to buy a Ferrari. I
05:37mean, love them or hate them, they're still the ultimate, the pinnacle of motoring desire.
05:42The ultimate, the pinnacle of motoring desire. And you'd be walking in here, and bah, oh
05:47hello. Oh boy, this is fantastic. Jason.
05:51Hi Richard.
05:52Very well indeed. A lot better for coming in here. I mean, who does come in here then
05:56and actually buy a real Ferrari?
05:59We get a big, big broad spectrum of customers. 95% of them have been working class people
06:05who've built the businesses up.
06:07They've made their own money?
06:08Of course they have, yeah, yeah. And then the reward being, like every child's dream,
06:11they've decided to go for the Ferrari.
06:13Well that's exactly it. It is still the dream car. But when they come in, what are they
06:18like? Are they really cool and relaxed and chill and blase about it? What are they like?
06:21I would faint. I wouldn't get through the door. I'd be too excited.
06:24If it's one of my repeat customers, then some of the times, you know, obviously they're
06:28a bit more laid back because they know us, we make a friend of them, etc. If it's the
06:32first time, then they're a bit reserved, but they're really excited.
06:35Can you tell they're still...
06:37And even customers who've had 2, 3, 20 or 30 cars always, always get excited.
06:42You're around these things all day, every day.
06:45Very lucky man.
06:46You lucky man. But what are people buying into when they buy a Ferrari? What is it?
06:50What is the whole Ferrari thing about when they spend a lot of money, and it is an awful
06:54lot of money?
06:55Well, there's no logic to putting £100,000 into a car, but a lot of the time it's a lifestyle.
07:00So, I mean, our biggest competitor, believe it or not, isn't other manufactured cars,
07:05it's actually big boats and helicopters.
07:10Serious toys.
07:11Yeah, but the easiest way to find out is let me take you out in one, and I'll show you
07:14what it's all about.
07:15Really? I'm not going to argue with that.
07:19Right, so you've picked a 550 Maranello.
07:21550 Maranello, fantastic car.
07:22These are a big seller for you, are they?
07:24Yeah, fantastic seller. Here we sell more cars for the 550 than anywhere else in Europe.
07:29How much is this worth?
07:31This listed out near £158,000.
07:34Right, I'd better be very careful then, hey?
07:38Okay, key in ignition, round to light, press button.
07:43I believe that's button pressed, is it?
07:44Yep.
07:50And off we go.
08:05What am I looking forward to experience when I'm experiencing a Ferrari,
08:08if I've come to you for the first time as a novice buyer?
08:11Obviously, the sense of speed, which is difficult to do on the British open roads,
08:20but you know, you can feel it in first and second on a car like this.
08:23You know, people talk about 0-60s on these cars, and yeah, they'll do 0-60 in around
08:27the fourth or second mark, but we actually talk about 0-60 in first and second.
08:310-60 in around the fourth or second mark, but we actually talk 0-60, 60-120,
08:36and 120-180 is about the same time difference.
08:40The car will do a metric mile in less than 23 seconds, and it just is unforgiving.
08:45It's just pure, unforgiving power.
08:48Just while we're sitting here at the lights, because even in a Ferrari,
08:51you get stuck at the lights, just as a place to be.
08:54I mean, it's such a tactile experience, isn't it?
08:57Yeah, the driving experience of it is just superb.
09:00Obviously, the showmanship of the vehicle, you know, it's like a piece of art
09:06riding down the road, and people will look, you know,
09:09and you get that feel-good factor in the car, not because you're pausing in the car,
09:13but you can't, no, and people don't buy them for the ego boost,
09:19but, you know, it's nice to see people smile and point and say,
09:23oh, look, a Ferrari, because really, you never see them.
09:26Jason, what do people say when they're coming to buy one, and you say,
09:28right, okay, well, let's go and take a spin in this, see if it's the one for you.
09:31That is the route that I normally take them.
09:33I try and ask them what they're going to be using them for.
09:35The average Ferrari tends to be the fourth car, but it doesn't have to be.
09:39It is a car that you can drive every day, but from a business point of view,
09:42from a practicality point of view, it might not be the most practical car for you to use,
09:46whether it be in business or for leisure.
09:49If you've got children, obviously, you can see there's only two seats in this car.
09:53So we try and take them down the line of what you really want from the car.
09:58Is it something for a Saturday afternoon, a Sunday dinner time?
10:02Is it something that you just want to go out country lanes and just get that feel?
10:06The myth that goes with Ferrari, I can't put my name on it, and nobody else can.
10:10It's just there, and there's something about it.
10:12Have you ever had anybody get in and just say, yeah, that's not what I want?
10:15Well, I work on the basis, like I said to you, Richard, you know, it's a fantastic car.
10:20If you bump it, bang it, or scratch it, you own it.
10:23So, you know, if you want to do that, it's a nice sale for me.
10:27Do you ever find yourself sitting there going...
10:29I've had some experiences, but I won't comment.
10:31Anyone knows, but...
10:33No, I have had some area experiences.
10:35Really? People getting a bit carried away?
10:37If somebody gets in a car and doesn't know how to drive a car,
10:40and I mean really doesn't know how to drive a car, but thinks they do,
10:43I'll normally make a comment.
10:45But you've got to break that one rather gently,
10:47because, I mean, you said £60,000 car.
10:50Yeah, I will.
10:51If I'm not buying it, it would be a bit of a disappointment.
10:53Well, I normally break the comment without actually swearing,
10:56so I suppose I am breaking it gently.
10:58As gently as you can.
10:59Yeah, you've got to do it.
11:01What should we look for if we're buying a Ferrari,
11:04which, I've got to say I'm not, but if I was,
11:07are there any rules? Is it as simple as that?
11:10It's unlike anything else, isn't it?
11:12It is unlike anything else,
11:13and that's what's so unique about buying a Ferrari, if you like.
11:17So, what do you look for?
11:20Try and stay away from the imports,
11:22only because you've then got the British service history,
11:24the usual stuff, really, with a lot of manufactured cars.
11:27The other thing, a lot of people sometimes comment on left-hand drive vehicles,
11:31but these cars are capable of 200 miles an hour,
11:34and believe me, when you're overtaking a wagon
11:36and you're on the wrong side of the car,
11:38I wouldn't like to be the passenger in a left-hand drive car.
11:41So, have you ever had anybody?
11:43Well, you said when people come to buy these things,
11:45you can still tell there's a little bit of excitement there.
11:48It is a Ferrari, after all.
11:50When it comes to driving it and testing it,
11:52have you ever had anybody who seems really sensible,
11:54but then, it's a Ferrari?
11:56Yeah, they do. They do, innit?
11:59And, you know, the cameras will come out with some customers
12:03and they'll videotape it,
12:05and it's great because when I deliver the cars,
12:07which I sell all over the country,
12:09and we deliver it by a covered wagon,
12:11and when the cars coming off the transport are all gleaming,
12:14and, you know, you can just see it,
12:16and they just can't wait to get in the car.
12:19They'll always take it easy
12:21because it's the pride and joy, all of a sudden,
12:25and they'll take it easy,
12:26but sometimes you just think,
12:28it's just a bit too peak to get in that car.
12:30Because we want to hear from you
12:32that when people buy a £158,000 car,
12:36they're still excited.
12:37We need to hear that.
12:38They are.
12:39And, I mean, you're driving this car at the moment,
12:41and it's just a dream car,
12:43that, you know, you want to get in the car
12:46and drive it all the time.
12:48I mean, I sell them and drive them all day long,
12:50and I'm very, very lucky like that,
12:51but I never, never, never get in a car
12:54and not be excited.
12:55It's just a phenomenal feeling to drive one.
12:58One thing we haven't mentioned.
12:59This is really important.
13:00Ferrari, girls.
13:01Girls, Ferrari.
13:03I'm not commenting.
13:04Right.
13:05So, if I drive, like, really slowly through town now,
13:07put my skinny little elbow out the window.
13:09I'd like to think they were looking at the car
13:11and not you, Richard.
13:17When you're buying one of these things,
13:18and there's an element of investment
13:19that don't depreciate as much as an ordinary car,
13:22and there is that prancing horse,
13:24how much of it is the badge,
13:25and how much of it is reality,
13:26is what the thing can actually do to these?
13:28I really believe, you know,
13:31with regards to the badge and the car,
13:34I really believe with this car
13:35you are getting £150,000 worth of car.
13:39You know, it's a select model.
13:40Granted, they're all one-offs.
13:42They're all individually built.
13:47The car itself, everything about it,
13:50to me, is that showmanship,
13:52that one-off about it.
13:55Do you know if they're going to take it?
13:57Thanks very much.
13:58How long can I pay it off?
14:00I'm thinking like...
14:01We do do finance on these vehicles as well.
14:03How many hundreds of years?
14:05You know, we take them over four and five years.
14:08Right.
14:09You wouldn't have liked 200, something like that.
14:16OK, so let's get down to the nitty-gritty.
14:18Just how much is the car of your dreams
14:21actually going to cost you?
14:23Well, the entry-level 360
14:26is going to set you back a cool £103,000,
14:30while a 456 is yours at £170,000.
14:34And if you thought you could find a bargain
14:36down at the local car supermarket,
14:38think again,
14:39because with an unmatchable image,
14:41a second-hand 355 is still going to cost you
14:44the better part of £45,000.
14:48OK, let's be honest here.
14:50For most of us, the prospect of owning and driving a Ferrari
14:53is likely to remain forever the automotive equivalent
14:56of a cosy night in with Natalie Imbruglia, Kylie Minogue,
14:58Meg Ryan and a bat of custard.
15:00Nice thought, but not likely to actually happen.
15:04But it is strangely a little bit comforting
15:06to know that the lucky devils
15:08who are able to afford to walk into a place like this,
15:11pay the money and drive out in a Ferrari,
15:13still feel just a fraction of the excitement
15:16that would have you and I frothing at the trousers.
15:19OK, we could try and make out
15:21a rational, reasoned case for having a Ferrari.
15:23They don't depreciate like ordinary cars.
15:25In fact, if you can get a 360 Spyder at the right price,
15:27you might even make money on it.
15:29But that's not what they're about.
15:30Ferraris are not, never have been, never will be practical.
15:33Can you see an estate? I don't think so.
15:35They are very expensive toys for very rich boys and girls.
15:39And that's what makes them Ferrari.
15:42In 1999, at the Geneva Motor Show,
15:44Ferrari unveiled the replacement for the much-loved
15:47and much-heralded 355,
15:49a car that was to be one of the most significant in its history,
15:52the 360 Modena.
15:54Designed by the now-legendary Pininfarina,
15:57inspiration for the 360 came from the classic Ferraris of old,
16:01like the 269 and Dino.
16:03Somehow the beautiful, curvaceous body
16:05manages to disguise the car's huge dimensions.
16:08But the car isn't just about style,
16:10because along with the use of aluminium throughout,
16:13it features radical new technology
16:15that would make the 360 one of the most advanced of all time.
16:18Now, the task of creating a brand-new sports car
16:21is, of course, a huge one.
16:23Gone are the days when you can lump a huge engine in a car
16:26and make it go fast in a straight line.
16:28No, these days it has to corner like it's on rails,
16:31which is where these come into play.
16:34Without getting too technical, because I'll get confused,
16:37these two huge rear air intakes
16:39channel air through to the diffusers and down to the ground,
16:42creating downforce.
16:44Not very noticeable at low speed,
16:46but the greater the speed, the greater the downforce.
16:49Now, according to Ferrari,
16:51somewhere near top speed, 180 mph,
16:53that will be creating about 180 kg of downforce.
16:59Let's see how much we create at 38 mph.
17:06Now, for me, this 360 is an everyday car.
17:09It used to be a criticism of certainly the 355
17:12when it was competing with the 911
17:14that you needed to warm it up, you needed to warm it down,
17:17the gearbox needed warming up, etc.
17:19This 360, no problem, you can just get in and go.
17:23The brakes are, well, just amazing.
17:26On the rear fat wheels, you've got twin calipers
17:29and it stops the car in no time at all,
17:32but I guess that's what you need in a car that does 180 mph.
17:36Cornering, well, it's the complete experience.
17:45Now, no one is saying that this Ferrari is the best
17:48or even the most beautiful ever,
17:50although it is obviously rather nice,
17:52but it does represent Ferrari's ability
17:54to constantly push the technological barriers forward
17:57and create a sports car experience
18:00that very few car manufacturers, if any, can match.
18:03So, if you've been tempted
18:05and you've got pots of cash sitting around
18:07and you think you might like one of these,
18:09here's Ian Royal with a few tips.
18:12Now, in the past, Ferrari have been accused
18:14of having reliability issues.
18:16It used to go that if you used them too much,
18:18they tended to break, but the reverse is also true.
18:21By leaving the car locked away in a garage,
18:24everything from the hydraulics to the gaskets
18:26can deteriorate and perish,
18:28leaving you with a nasty repair bill.
18:30The best Ferraris to buy
18:32are ones that have received moderate use
18:34and have been regularly serviced.
18:36If you are unlucky
18:38and your prancing horse becomes lame at the side of the road,
18:41here's what it will take to get you moving again.
18:44A new clutch kit will set you back in the region
18:46of £486,
18:49while a water pump will cost you £130.
18:52If by some strange twist of fate
18:55you find yourself without an ashtray,
18:57a replacement will cost you a cool £140.
19:03There is no doubt that this company
19:05is the most famous sports car manufacturer in the world.
19:09So why don't we stop this charade?
19:11You can see it's Ferrari.
19:12I'm going to close my fat Mancunian mouth
19:14while you take a look at these.
19:17Ferrari were established in 1929
19:20by the now legendary Enzo Ferrari.
19:22His aim at the start was simple.
19:24Arrange races and support the Alfa Romeo racing team.
19:27Surprising to many, however,
19:29is that he didn't produce his first car
19:31until 1947, the 125.
19:34Sometimes life can be a strange thing, eh?
19:36One minute in the middle of the night
19:37you're wiping the baby sick from your pillow,
19:39the next you're getting to mess around
19:41with a whole bunch of Ferraris.
19:43Absolutely fantastic.
19:45The 246 Dino is one of the most famous
19:48and distinctive cars in the world, ever.
19:50Period.
19:51Even with its somewhat dubious styling,
19:53by modern standards at least.
19:55For a start, just look at the front of the car.
19:57Looks like a frog.
19:59Albeit a very powerful and cute frog.
20:01As we move around, the back of the car
20:03somehow manages to incorporate sexy curves
20:05around the wheel arches
20:07and sharp, aggressive lines leading up the roof.
20:10It's a strange mix that somehow works
20:12to create a car that can still be called
20:14sexy yet look so industrious.
20:18Now if you're like me,
20:19the prospect of looking at a car's engine
20:21is as dull as dishwater,
20:23and that's whilst watching Pop Idol.
20:25And visually, this engine isn't much to look at
20:27by modern standards.
20:28Its significance is historic.
20:30It's a beautifully clean, as you can see,
20:322.5 litre V6 mid-mounted transverse engine.
20:35Sitting just in front of the back wheels,
20:37it gives the car perfect balance.
20:39Power, well that was impressive too,
20:41as you can imagine.
20:42Only 195 brake horsepower,
20:44but it peaked at 7,500 revs,
20:46giving the car a top speed of 152 miles per hour.
20:50It makes a beautiful high-pitched note.
20:53Now the moment I've all been waiting for.
20:55Ever since I became aware of cars,
20:57probably 25 years ago,
20:58I've always wanted to drive the Ferrari Dino.
21:02God bless him.
21:08Ferrari Dino
21:24One of the first things you realise
21:25when you get into this car
21:26is that it is very old.
21:28The brakes aren't up to much,
21:29the steering is, whilst good at speed,
21:32wallowy, I would say.
21:34And the gearbox is, well, it needs work.
21:36You need to be really aware of what gear it's in,
21:39even though there's nothing wrong with it.
21:40And I'm sure in its day it was great
21:42compared to the experience,
21:43obviously, of driving modern Ferraris.
21:45It can be hard work.
21:48Now the emergence of the Dino
21:49was emotionally a mixed affair
21:51because, even though they'd produced
21:53a beautiful, stunning sports car,
21:56it was tinged with tragedy too
21:57because Enzo Ferrari's son, Dino,
22:00lost his battle with cancer in his early 20s.
22:03And after that, the 246 simply became known as Dino.
22:14Acceleration on this car, for its age,
22:16is really phenomenal.
22:17You have to work hard at it.
22:19But this is a dream fulfilled.
22:21I feel like Tony Curtis in The Persuaders.
22:24Anyone remember that title sequence
22:26chasing Roger Moore in the Aston Martin DBS?
22:29Nobody?
22:31Go and watch Pop Idol, a lot of you.
22:40There are very few things, or indeed people,
22:43as iconic as a Ferrari Dino.
22:45Growing up in the late 70s, early 80s,
22:47pictures on the wall alongside Charlie's Angels
22:50and the Wombles, a picture of a Dino.
22:52All right, it made for some very interesting dreams
22:54involving Uncle Bulgaria and Farah Fawcett,
22:56but that's a different matter.
22:57No, this Dino is the stuff that dreams are made of.
23:02We're going to jump ahead just a little now,
23:03because over the next 10, 15 years,
23:05Ferrari continued to produce highly desirable,
23:08exotica cars like the Testarossa, the GTO, the 308,
23:12until in 1985, they launched this, the 328.
23:17Unveiled at the Frankfurt show,
23:18the 328 wasn't so much a completely new design,
23:21more of a significant facelift of the 10-year-old 308.
23:25Visually, the biggest changes to the Pininfarina design
23:28were around the lower half of the car.
23:30The prominent changes were to the front,
23:32while on the inside, the changes were much more noticeable,
23:35as it benefited from a complete makeover.
23:41Powering the car as you can possibly work out
23:43from the name, 328, was a 3.2-litre V8 unit.
23:47Performance, well, that was more than respectable.
23:50164 miles per hour, a not-so-bad performance,
23:53164 miles per hour, a 0-60 in about 5.4.
23:59It'd be rude not to.
24:08People often mistake this Ferrari for the one that Magnum drove
24:11in his eponymous titled series, Magnum.
24:14But it isn't. That was the 308.
24:16This is the altogether more refined 328.
24:19And actually, once you get to the car,
24:21you do wonder how Magnum, Tom Selleck,
24:23would have got his moustache in here,
24:25let alone his huge frame.
24:32But it really isn't very practical.
24:34The gearbox has to warm up.
24:36You have to look where you're putting the lever
24:38as you're changing gear.
24:40And as for three-point turns and manoeuvring,
24:42well, forget it.
24:44But, hey, I ain't grumbling.
24:52Once I put my oiled frame into the seat as well,
24:56there is a lack of steering room around my legs.
24:59And the dash is annoyingly close to the steering wheel.
25:02So as you are doing quick steering manoeuvres,
25:04you sometimes get your hands caught on the dash.
25:07Slightly irritating.
25:09And also, once I've reclined my seat fully
25:12so I can get my head in, and you can see there's no room there,
25:15it means that the gear lever is just out of reach.
25:18And in second and fourth gears,
25:20I really have to sort of lean into it.
25:22But it's not that much of a problem.
25:25I'll just grow my arms,
25:27carry some heavy shopping, be all right.
25:43During its four-year life,
25:45over 7,500 328s were built.
25:48And the GTS version became one of the most popular Ferraris of all time.
25:52And even at the end of production,
25:54the styling cues continued in cars like the 348 and the 355.
25:57But that popularity means that residual values are still high.
26:01This week, Andy's going to be looking at buying a used supercar.
26:05Today, I'm going to talk you through a few points
26:07which are relevant to buying one of these beasts.
26:10Today, I have a Ferrari 360 here.
26:12But all the points I'm going to be talking about
26:14are all relevant to buying one of these cars.
26:17First of all, when you're buying a supercar,
26:19what you will find is that most of the time,
26:21the front is what we call peppered.
26:23There's lots of stone chips, been used on a track,
26:25it's been driven fastly.
26:27Don't let that put you off too much.
26:29Most of the dealers that you buy these cars off
26:31will have the front painted.
26:32Once again, that's not a bad thing,
26:34but just check it's a good paint job,
26:36there's no blistering on the paint,
26:38and the paint matches the colour of the rest of the car.
26:41Also look for the panels on the vehicle,
26:44make sure they match up on either side
26:46to show that they're not badly fitted.
26:49Check on the doors as well,
26:51that the doors actually match,
26:54and the gap between the doors and the rest of the body
26:57is the same on the other side.
26:59Inside the car, you'll find,
27:01depending on the year of the vehicle,
27:03the condition of the leather.
27:05It can be repaired if it looks old.
27:08It can cost you up to £250
27:10for a service which dealers offer called conolising,
27:13where they actually repaint the leather.
27:15Always drive the vehicle when you're spending this level of money.
27:18Check the clutch operation,
27:20and all important is the service history of the vehicle.
27:24Check the service history yourself.
27:26It might be advisable to actually ring the dealers,
27:28which are actually in the book,
27:30which has been stamped,
27:31and check that the service is carried out.
27:33Every three years, Ferraris do need a big service
27:35called a cam belt service,
27:37which can cost up to £2,000 to £3,000,
27:40depending on the service.
27:41Make sure that is done.
27:42It's all important.
27:44If you're buying a soft-top Ferrari,
27:46the hood operation is very important.
27:49Check the hood for wear and tear.
27:51Make sure there's no rips,
27:52because it can cost you up to £5,000
27:54to have these hoods replaced.
27:56With the engine bay as well,
27:58have a look in the engine bay.
27:59Unless you're a Ferrari technician,
28:01it's not going to make a lot of sense,
28:02but just check to see if there's any obvious sign of misuse
28:05or anything actually being replaced.
28:09Next week, I'll be here again,
28:11talking about another used car deal.
28:13Despite being a good car,
28:14the Mondial isn't as desirable as some other models,
28:17which is great news if you're buying second-hand.
28:20We found a 1984 Mondial QV V8 for a bargain,
28:24£11,000,
28:26while a 1990 3.4T convertible
28:29would set you back just under £25,000.
28:32The car is 1985.
28:34It's nearly 18 years old.
28:37Italian metal wasn't the best of metal at that period,
28:42so you have to keep on top of the metal work in the Ferrari.
28:45Mechanically, no, there's no problems.
28:49They're very well built, very well put together.
28:53Although the Mondial is over 20 years old in some cases,
28:56parts aren't that expensive when compared to modern Ferraris.
29:00A new clutch kit will cost around £250,
29:03an ignition coil could be yours for £230,
29:07while an exhaust tip is a snip at £26.
29:11Of course, it's insured on a limited mileage insurance,
29:15which allows me 3,000 miles a year,
29:18which is ample for the motor I'm going to do anyway.
29:21Running costs are no dearer.
29:24I run a BMW, no dearer than the BMW.
29:27One of the reasons I bought this model,
29:30the cam belts can be changed on this car
29:32without the engine coming out of the car.
29:34Most Ferraris, the engine has to come out
29:37until the cam belt's changed.
29:39That's expensive.
29:41If you are considering buying a Mondial,
29:43you have to realise that because they are
29:45one of the more affordable Ferraris,
29:47they're also more likely to have been abused.
29:49Make sure that you check out a car's past,
29:52look at the service history carefully
29:54and what has actually been replaced
29:56and find yourself a qualified independent mechanic
29:59to check out the car thoroughly.
30:03Anyone ever come up to you and say
30:05the nicest things come in the smallest packages?
30:08Absolute rubbish.
30:12My old teacher used to say,
30:14Brendan, empty vessels make most sound.
30:16Well, listen.
30:18That's both full and intelligent.
30:22And my favourite saying,
30:24if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
30:26Well, this wasn't broken,
30:28but they fixed it.
30:31This is the new £163,000 Ferrari 575M Fiorano.
30:38And it's my job to tell you
30:40that beggars can be choosers.
30:44The daddy of all supercars,
30:46the Ferrari 550 has been given a bit of a workout.
30:49It's been given more power like it needed it.
30:52And with the Fiorano handling pack that's on this car,
30:54it's got a whole new attitude.
30:57What comes with the Fiorano handling pack?
31:00Lower and stiffer springs all round,
31:02a new ECU to lessen the assisted steering,
31:05adjusting damper rates on the suspension,
31:07higher performance brake pads with red calipers
31:10and most importantly for me, a stiffer rear anti-roll bar.
31:13Now, anything that increases stiffness,
31:15along with Viagra in my book, is a good thing.
31:19This is a car that was already very good,
31:21but it's been to the gym.
31:22It's pumped up, looking good, feeling fine.
31:24And it's a car that suffers from a superiority complex.
31:27It's got very high self-esteem,
31:29but not smugly, you understand,
31:31just quietly and confidently exuding the knowledge
31:34that it's the very best money can buy.
31:37Visually, the 575 is pretty much identical to the 550,
31:41carrying over all of the classic and understated lines.
31:45All the major changes are under the skin.
31:47Apart from the increase in the car's power,
31:50Ferrari have also been focusing on the car's handling.
31:53And underneath this gorgeous exterior,
31:55they've made a whole host of revisions to the old 550.
31:58Now, unless I've developed x-ray vision,
32:00and I haven't, and if I did, I wouldn't still be here,
32:02the only way I'm going to see those
32:03is by taking the car on the open road.
32:09As soon as you get in, one of the first things you notice,
32:12like meeting a woman that wears a brace,
32:14is this Formula 1 paddle shift semi-automatic system.
32:18And like the woman who wears the brace,
32:20you can't take your mind off it, it's always there.
32:22It's somehow, I don't know,
32:24it feels like technology for the sake of technology.
32:27It's depriving the driver of some of the experience,
32:30the thrill of driving a Ferrari.
32:32I can't help thinking that in 20 years' time,
32:34we're going to be asking the question,
32:35what, you had paddles on the side of the steering wheel?
32:39How much of the firmness of ride
32:41is down to the Fiorano ride handling pack?
32:43I don't know, I've not driven the 575 without it.
32:46But one witty scribe decided
32:48that it ought to be standard rather than the regular ride,
32:51and that old people or retired people
32:54could order it without the handling pack,
32:56call it the Florida option.
32:58A lack of an extra, if you like.
33:00It's absolutely frightening to think what this car can do.
33:03I'm driving it probably 50% of its power,
33:06and it really is awesome.
33:08It's far too wet,
33:09and I'm too inexperienced to drive it anywhere near its limit.
33:13But I'm enjoying
33:15just about the amount of performance I'm getting.
33:18I'd have to be on a track or seriously loop it
33:21to go anywhere near its limits.
33:28Now, obviously, this car isn't just amongst the best,
33:30it is the best, the ultimate in sports car exotica.
33:34But as such, you pay top dollar, 163 grand.
33:37Just imagine what you could get with that kind of money.
33:40I've also got a problem with the fuel economy.
33:4210 miles per gallon, not just the cost.
33:44Obviously, if you've got this car, you don't care.
33:46I mean the environment.
33:47I'd have to subscribe to Friends of the Earth,
33:49and in this car, that wouldn't work.
33:51Anyway, if you've had your fancy tickled,
33:53here's Ian Royal with a guide
33:54on how to get your hands on a Maranello.
33:57If you get...
33:58I'll just...
33:59Couple of minutes in there, see you.
34:04And here he is, the luckiest man in the world.
34:06He's known as Shiraz Sheikh, or Sheikh to his mates,
34:09and he's a Ferrari nut.
34:11He's already got two, now we're looking for another.
34:13Boy, have we got a treat in store for him.
34:16Sheikh, welcome to the programme.
34:18Thank you.
34:19Thanks for coming on, not just because it's nice to see you,
34:21but also because you're a great excuse
34:23to have these gorgeous cars.
34:24It's my pleasure.
34:25So we've got three Ferraris to play with.
34:27Can have a go in all of them.
34:28Oh, good.
34:29And have a good test of them.
34:30But first up, this, 550 Maranello.
34:31Now, of course, you're going to be familiar with this
34:33because you love all Ferraris.
34:34What do you think of it?
34:35It's a 12-cylinder front engine.
34:37Gorgeous looks, stunning, a bit big.
34:40It's very big, indeed.
34:42I mean, to my mind, this is, I think,
34:44one of the most beautiful cars there is on the market today.
34:47It's stunning.
34:48But it is, of course, very different to your own Ferraris.
34:51328, 308, they're mid-engine, two-seaters.
34:54So we've got this, which is kind of the modern equivalent,
34:57the 360 Modena.
34:59Replace the 355, of course.
35:00What do you reckon to it?
35:01I think this is the one.
35:02This has got the looks, the colour,
35:05the engine in the back, the noise, everything.
35:08It's a classic Ferrari, isn't it?
35:09This is what Ferraris are.
35:10It's the schoolboy bright red Ferrari.
35:13You can just see it.
35:15It's got the stunning looks and everything.
35:16It moves even when it's stationary, if you know what I mean.
35:18But we thought we'd do something a bit different as well.
35:21Not just that.
35:22We've got this.
35:23From a two-seater to a four-seater, a 456,
35:26this is the grown-up Ferrari, if you like.
35:28A bit too grown-up for me, really.
35:30It's four seats, engine in the front.
35:33You're complaining.
35:34I'm not complaining.
35:35You're complaining about a Ferrari.
35:37It's still a Ferrari.
35:38Get it and give it a drive.
35:40It's going to find fault with this.
35:42I'm going to have a drive and see what I can...
35:44Yeah, we'll have a go, mate.
36:00So, first up, Shake, the 456, generally,
36:02is this the first time you've driven one of these?
36:04Because you've driven a few Ferraris, haven't you?
36:06Yeah, it's the first time I've driven a four-seater Ferrari.
36:09Yeah.
36:10And the first time for a 456 as well.
36:12OK.
36:13So, initial thoughts, what do you think as you come to drive it?
36:17It's quite big and roomy, I'm surprised.
36:21Because, I mean, mine's just two seats,
36:23and that's it, there's nothing else.
36:25But there seems to be a lot of room.
36:33It's a four-seater.
36:34I'm not quite ready for a four-seater yet,
36:36but I think I would like to try this on the track.
36:40Because I think it's got the power for the track as well.
36:43You're not ready for a four-seater.
36:45It's a Ferrari, Shake.
36:46It's not exactly a Volvo.
36:48Yeah, but I'm still in the two-seater thing yet.
36:52It's no pleasing to some people.
37:02Well, thank you, Aidan.
37:28Nice suggestion and a very nice car, I'm sure.
37:31But somehow, I think we've already found Shake's dream car
37:34here in the delightful form of the 360 Modena.
37:37Because you've gone all smiley on us already.
37:39You like this.
37:40I think you've sold me it already without even trying.
37:42You haven't even driven it.
37:43Well, we've got to have a go, most definitely.
37:45So let's get in.
37:46Oh, I think so.
38:01So this is much more familiar to me.
38:13This is more like it.
38:17The symphonies behind you.
38:22Oh, yes, you can feel the vibrations in your spine.
38:27You have spent all day being a classic Yorkshireman
38:30Just a few words, only when appropriate.
38:33All of a sudden now, you're jabbering like a big girlie.
38:37As soon as you get your hands on this, that's it.
38:40The most talkative man in the world.
38:42Oh, that's such a nice thing.
38:49I mean, it is much more basic in here.
38:51It's nothing like the luxury.
38:53You don't want luxury.
38:55You want the performance and the thrills and spills.
39:02The ride is incredible.
39:03You can feel everything that's happening, can't you?
39:05It's not intrusive.
39:06It's not uncomfortable.
39:07You could be in this all day.
39:08But equally, you know you're not in a grand tour at this time.
39:12No, this is more...
39:15I think they say it's designed for the track, where you'd feel at home on the road or on the track.
39:45Thank you, Simon.
40:00And there'll be more from the Car Doctor next week on Used Car Heaven.
40:03Right now, though, it's time for Shay and I to sample the second in our trio of fabulous Ferraris with a 550 Maranello.
40:10Hurrah.
40:11Looking forward to this one?
40:12I've been looking forward to it all day.
40:13Again, you're familiar with the car.
40:14You know a bit about it.
40:15Yeah, the 12 cylinders in the front.
40:17Chance to have a good go in it.
40:18There's the key.
40:19Take it away.
40:20I'm coming with you, though.
40:23Oh, boy.
40:44So it is very much the sort of traditional...
40:46Oh.
40:47...hobonnet.
40:48That's the one.
40:49And how are you finding the driving experience?
40:51This is more thrilling.
40:52Yeah.
40:53Why?
40:54It just seems a truer Ferrari, the whole power in.
40:59I think this is meant for racing.
41:01This is meant for putting your foot down.
41:03Whereas the other one was more the grand tourer as you put it.
41:08Whereas this is...
41:10That's what this is.
41:13What do you reckon to the interior on this one?
41:15Because it's still very plush, certainly, compared to yours.
41:18I'm not being rude about yours at all.
41:20It's a beautiful car.
41:21Yeah.
41:22But this is very plush, isn't it?
41:24Yeah, this is...
41:27Still got the gear gate, the aluminium one, which is one of my favourites.
41:35And it's...
41:36Again, it's the same maroon to go with the silver.
41:40Yeah, it's quite a nice colour combination, I must say.
41:42Yeah.
41:43Now, I'm a traditional red and cream Ferrari owner,
41:47but I think this is growing on me, this maroon and silver.
41:52Got burgundy and silver.
41:54You could be persuaded.
41:55I could.
41:56I think I could learn to live without the red and cream.
42:00I could live without the red and cream.
42:02I could live with this.
42:32Some years ago, I wrote a large book on culture and classical music and architecture.
42:49It covered 900 years.
42:51And although it was a large task, it was fascinating because it gave an overview.
42:56At the end, what one realised was not only was the history rich texture,
43:02but the important designs and the important themes reoccurred.
43:06Whenever something significant was wanted,
43:09people reverted to that which was comfortable, that which was understood.
43:14Even at the end of the last century,
43:16where they were fundraising for the individual railways,
43:19the railway stations of the time were built like palaces,
43:23simply because that way they looked substantial and would persuade investors to put money in.
43:28We need our design signals.
43:30And this is the case too with the automotive industry.
43:33And nobody, absolutely nobody is better than Pininfarina and the combination with Ferrari
43:40when it comes to picking and using the themes.
43:43Beside me, I have two absolute classics.
43:49One has borrowed from the other and both represent the same high standard.
43:55Let's look.
44:02This car follows in the footsteps of the famous short wheelbase 250 GT.
44:09It had virtually the same wheelbase and the same V12 Colombo engine,
44:13along with many, many racing lessons learnt from the fabulous P275.
44:18The gearbox, the independent rear suspension,
44:21they came from the Le Mans winning 250 LM,
44:24which anyone who's been to Coes will see and will relish.
44:28There are also family ties to classics like the great GTO and the fabulous P3s and P4s,
44:34which certainly are on my wall.
44:38All this and the Daytona as its offspring makes this everything that is sacred.
44:46With the new E-Type on the market and the upstart Lamborghinis threatening Ferrari,
44:51it was critical that they shone with their new car.
44:55Ferrari's answer was at the 1965 Paris show with this V12 engine,
45:00which was opened up from three to 3.3 litres,
45:03and the Pininfarina design, which is this 275.
45:07It had all the classic looks.
45:09It had the drooped nose. It had the hunched good looks here.
45:12It was the wraparound window. It had the cut spoiler.
45:15And above all, it had this wonderful, powerful, tolerant engine,
45:19which in its initial form was 290 brake horse at about 7,500 revs.
45:26The standard car used three twin-choke wafers,
45:29and there was an option of six smaller ones.
45:33This Ferrari was the first that had a five-speed road-going gearbox,
45:37because before that they'd used overdrives,
45:40and it was placed aft in order to copy the current fashion from Alfa and Porsche.
45:45There were oval chassis struts, which were tricky to restore
45:48and weren't always as stiffer as one would have hoped,
45:51particularly in the competition or the Spyder versions.
45:54Early cars would reach about 160,
45:57but the poor disc brakes and the initial aerodynamic troubles with the nose lifting
46:02resulted in the 1966 long-nosed Mk2,
46:06which had a larger rear window, and it had exposed hinges,
46:10and it had split fuel tanks.
46:13Then, in between 66 and 68,
46:17just 360 glorious GTB4s were built.
46:22They were based on the Mk2, and they used a 300-horsepower engine and four cams.
46:28This was a peak of engineering,
46:30and with 8,000 revs and nearly 170 miles an hour,
46:34it was designed for race, but it was wonderful on the road.
46:38Needless to say, inside a classic like this, you have all the period features.
46:43You have plenty of chrome, plenty of leather, plenty of period feel.
46:48It is truly a pure driving machine.
46:52Even the name GTB is GT for Grand Touring and Berlinetta for the body.
46:57The 275, as was Ferrari's won't,
47:00was actually the size of each cylinder capacity,
47:04and the four, of course, was the four cams.
47:07This same wooden steering wheel was used on the race cars.
47:11There was nothing different.
47:13The steering is wonderfully light. It's responsive.
47:16You can throw it around, and it tells you exactly what it's doing.
47:20The rear gearbox also helps, because the balance obviously is there,
47:24but really, as a drive car, the low idle,
47:27the fact that 2,500 revs, you've got action, made it glorious.
47:32The gears are tricky.
47:34They're on the other side. It's one of those gates.
47:37However, it is a sustained rhythm, if you can get it.
47:40They're close ratios, and the instant shutdown with these four cams
47:44means that if you get it wrong, it doesn't feel at all sweet.
47:47If you get it right, you feel the most wonderful driver on the roads.
48:14This is the brand-new Ferrari flagship.
48:19It replaces the Testarossa 512,
48:22the huge, powerful, old mid-engine V12.
48:26They've reverted now to the classic V12 front engine,
48:29as they had in the 275's days,
48:32and deserted what they started as a family with the Boxer.
48:36This, as a result, is more practical, it is more comfortable,
48:40it has more luggage space, and it is much faster.
48:44The aluminium body is set over a tubular steel frame,
48:48sandwiched by a composite material,
48:51which permits welding between different metals.
48:54The bumpers and the wheel arches are also composites,
48:57which is a wise move on a bodywork this expensive.
49:01The skillful Pininfarina styling has side vents from the old GTO,
49:06classic small roof, the hunches,
49:09everything about the long bonnet, the cut-off tail,
49:12is reminiscent of the 275.
49:15It is all part of the tradition.
49:18It is taller and more practical as a body.
49:21The styling is rather more modern than the Testarossa was,
49:26but little things like the windows that drop,
49:31and then go up, just as they do on some of the modern saloons,
49:35ensure a tight seal and a quieter machinery.
49:39It has a 485 brake horse, 5.5 litre engine.
49:45It's a development of the 2 Plus 2 456 GT.
49:49It is tilted, and the V12 has four valves,
49:53and it has four overhead cams, just as the 275 did.
49:58They wind tunnel tested this car for 4,800 hours,
50:03and as a result, the underside is virtually fully flared in.
50:07The whole thing is slipstreamed even underneath.
50:11It has electrically controlled seating.
50:14It has 6 CD auto changer, full air con, power steering.
50:19There are various speeds and clever tricks all over the place.
50:23The seating, everything about it is comfort,
50:26but it's very, very fast.
50:29This car will do 200 miles an hour,
50:32and it will do it in a delightful way.
50:34You won't know the speeds you're doing.
50:36You just know you are driving the Ferrari flagship.
50:40The interior, as you would expect, is beautifully trimmed.
50:44There is luggage space, complete with luggage straps behind you.
50:47There is the classic Ferrari open gate,
50:51but underneath it all, there is a sense of confidence.
50:54There are huge, huge brakes that are ventilated and drilled,
50:59and won't fade on you.
51:01There is a suspension that can be flicked from sports to regular road work
51:06so that whatever speed you're doing, you feel safe.
51:09It is a well-balanced car.
51:11It is everything you'd expect at the top end.
51:14It is, of course, the 550 Maranello.
51:32So, here we are.
51:34Two beautiful cars.
51:37On the one side, we have the period classic V12,
51:41and on the other, we have the brand-new, modern front-engine V12.
51:48I don't know which one.
51:50They're just works of art.
51:52I think maybe I'll just watch.
51:54F is for fast.
51:56E is for exciting and exotic.
51:59R is for red.
52:01And R, again, is for racing.
52:03Are you getting it yet?
52:05A is for amazing aerodynamics and acceleration.
52:10And R, again, is for Rosso.
52:12And then, finally, I is for Italian.
52:15And finally, I is for Italian.
52:19If you haven't got it yet, you're definitely a sad case.
52:22I'm here today at Gorsworth Hall to peruse two wonderful Ferraris.
52:27Just look and listen to these.
52:30The 1962 250 GTO and the F355.
52:35Are they cars that live up to the legend?
52:39So, guys, thanks very much for bringing these two wonderful cars along today.
52:43David, this is the Ferrari 355,
52:45commonly acknowledged to be one of the best Ferraris that's been built for some time.
52:48Is that justified?
52:49I think so, yes.
52:50It's a lot better than its predecessor,
52:52and it marks a return to the values that we were used to in Ferraris in days gone by.
52:56It's using the five-valve cylinder head,
52:58and it's using the four-valve cylinder head,
53:00and it's using the four-valve cylinder head,
53:02and it's using the four-valve cylinder head,
53:04and it's using the four-valve cylinder head,
53:06It's using the five valve cylinder heads that they used in Formula One
53:09until the middle of last season.
53:11We've also got six gears to make the best use of the power.
53:13So, there's only one thing for it, you'd better give me the keys and let me have a go.
53:16Enjoy yourself.
53:17Thanks very much. I've always wanted a set of Ferrari keys.
53:20The 355 may not be the classic that the GTO is,
53:24but it's a tremendous racing pedigree.
53:26The one thing that really tells you that it's a Ferrari
53:29is the engine behind me.
53:31The 3.5 later V8, pushing out some 390 horsepower,
53:35It doesn't really have any visors, particularly mid-corner, which a lot of cars in its class
53:39seem to suffer with one or two problems.
53:41But if there's one thing I don't like, though, it's the interior finish.
53:45Whilst the leather's quite nice, I hate the colour.
53:49But like all Ferraris, you really have to rev it.
53:51You really have to use it on the open road.
53:54It's not a shopping car, that's for sure.
53:57So, Stephen, with cars like this, why on earth do you want to own a Ferrari built in 1962?
54:04Simply this.
54:05It's the finest old 1962 12-cylinder motor car that's ever been made by Ferrari.
54:11It won more races than anything you can imagine.
54:14And really, the whole heritage of Ferraris comes from the 250 GT, and this is a 250 GTO.
54:19The engine is unbreakable at 8,000 revs per minute.
54:22I think we'd better look at this engine.
54:25It's a 300-horsepower V12 dry-sump engine.
54:29The centre of gravity is below the height of your knees, which gives it exceptional stability.
54:34I must say that every time I get in the car, it makes me feel 30 years younger.
54:38Well, I fancy trying a bit of that myself, so we'd better have a little drive.
54:45The first thing that strikes you about this car is its complete lack of creature comfort.
54:50But that's not surprising, considering the car is as old as it is, built in the 1960s.
54:56Having said that, it's got all that wonderful feel that a race-bred car, road car, should have.
55:04You feel every bump in the road.
55:06The one problem, really, is the question of conversation.
55:11You can't have a lot of it in this car, because as you can hear,
55:18it really is quite noisy.
55:21But there's one phrase to sum it all up.
55:25Bella macchina.
55:27A beautiful, beautiful car.
55:30It took all my skill as a smooth-talking racing driver to persuade these guys
55:34to let me take their cars off the road and onto the racetrack,
55:37where hopefully there are no milk floats.
55:41As on the road, you really have to work this engine hard.
55:44But round here, it's a real joy, as you never get below that dreaded 4,000 revs.
55:49On the track, its age begins to slip away.
55:51So you can try to use the car to its proper limit,
55:54although you'll never reach the top speed of 170 miles an hour on a circuit like this.
55:58But who cares? This is absolutely brilliant.
56:02This is one of only 32 cars ever built.
56:05In its heyday in the 60s, this car was a Cobra and an E-Type E-Turn.
56:08It had some great battles.
56:10In fact, it ended its career rather ingloriously when it was taken out by a milk float
56:14between stages on the Tour de France in 1964.
56:19This car is an absolute masterpiece.
56:21It's a work of art.
56:23It was built by Scalietti, who must have been a pupil of somebody like Michelangelo.
56:27Just look at that bonnet as it falls away from you,
56:30and you can see those wonderful bulges,
56:32hiding, of course, the pièce de résistance, the V12 engine.
56:36And it just shows the racing pedigree of this car, which is now some 32 years old.
56:41If you can stand the high-pitched scream, it will actually rev to 8,500 revs.
56:46And the V12, even of this vintage, sounds absolutely wonderful.
56:50It's exactly as a race car should be.
56:53So much for the GTO.
56:54Let's take a time warp and see what Ferrari have pulled out of the hat for 1995.
57:00This car is really beginning to show its racing pedigree.
57:02It's an excellent chassis.
57:04One penalty of the traditional Ferrari gearbox is that it can be a little bit slow,
57:10and at times you can miss shift, so you have to take great care.
57:15The 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds is fairly impressive,
57:18and the top speed of 183 mph is something we certainly won't reach today at Oldham Park.
57:25There's just one question you'd probably like to ask,
57:27is how much these cars are worth.
57:29The 355 is worth about £84,000,
57:32but the GTO, this car, is worth something in the order of a cool £10 billion.
57:38That's £4 million to you.
57:39I mean, it is a classic after all, like an old master painting, for example.
57:45But unlike a painting, you can actually drive this car and enjoy it.
57:47But the trouble is, there might be a milk float round the corner.
