Michael Plant gives his verdict as Manchester City crash out of the Champions League on penalties to Real Madrid.
Transcript
00:00 It's full time here at the Etihad Stadium and it's Manchester City who have crashed
00:04 out of the Champions League after a really disappointing night against Real Madrid.
00:07 It took 120 minutes and still the teams couldn't be separated so penalties were required and
00:13 it was ultimately City who missed the decisive penalties.
00:17 Kovacic and Bernardo Silva failing to convert from the spot.
00:20 Luka Modric also missed from Madrid but it was Antonio Rudiger, a player who has been
00:25 the downfall of Manchester City before in the Champions League who ultimately scored
00:28 the final decisive penalty to see Madrid, the 14 time champions, move on to the semi-final
00:34 of the competition and City crash out.
00:36 But it was a game that really went perfectly to plan for Madrid in certain ways.
00:42 They scored the early goal through Rodrigo, a really nice move involving all four of Madrid's
00:47 attacking players.
00:48 It was finished by Rodrigo.
00:49 Madrid's first shot was saved by Ederson and he scored from the rebound.
00:54 It provided Madrid a platform to sit back defensively, sit pretty deep, make it really
00:59 difficult for City to break them down and to be compact.
01:02 City really just couldn't find any gaps or spaces to exploit.
01:06 Erling Haaland couldn't get on the ball.
01:08 Phil Foden found it difficult to make things happen.
01:10 Kevin Bruyne actually was frustrated for long periods but City just kept going and eventually
01:15 they did get the goal through to Bruyne in the 70th minute.
01:19 Actually a rare mistake from the Madrid back line.
01:21 Rudiger feeling the deep of the cross into the front post.
01:24 He kind of scuffed the clearance, fell to the Bruyne who converted.
01:28 From there you kind of wonder whether City were going to go on and win it.
01:31 The Bruyne had a fantastic chance, I think it was in the 82nd minute to win it.
01:35 He failed to convert from the cross.
01:39 Sky the straddle over, I really think he should have scored that.
01:41 That would be a moment that City would look back on and really regret.
01:44 When in the extra time, both teams were absolutely knackered.
01:47 Just dead on their feet really.
01:48 Particularly Madrid, who just sat really deep.
01:50 11 men behind the ball.
01:51 Once or twice all 11 players from Madrid were inside their own half.
01:54 City just couldn't find a way to get through.
01:57 There weren't many chances in extra time.
01:59 Went to penalties and as I say it was Madrid who got through.
02:02 But City, I think there was lots of time.
02:07 I'm being ushered out when I'm showing my media pass.
02:10 City as I say, disappointing on the night.
02:12 I think Pep will be pleased with the performance.
02:14 We know it was just so difficult.
02:16 The famous Real Madrid came here, got 11 men behind the ball.
02:19 Made it really difficult.
02:20 I think that in an odd sense is a badge of honour for City.
02:23 Just that inability in the big moment to provide that winning goal.
02:28 That winning goal has cost them.
02:30 It means the Champions of Europe, they're not going to hold on to the crown this year.
02:33 They're out in the quarter-final stage.
02:35 Should hopefully ease up the fixture schedule is the one plus point.
02:38 But actually plenty of injury issues as well for City to be concerned about.
02:43 Haaland and De Bruyne came off limping.
02:44 Ancelotti and Guardiola as well had an issue at the end.
02:47 So yeah, lots of concerns going into that Brighton game at the weekend.
02:49 But for now the big disappointment is for Manchester City, the Champions of Europe,
02:52 they're out of the competition.
